Martha Stewart Weighs In On Her Friendship With Blake Lively

$

Blake Lively gushes about her "idol" Martha Stewart in the August issue of Vogue, saying, "I’ve only ever found her to be completely generous and kind. She’s one of those people who connect people with each other. She’s there for you.”

Like when Lively's wedding to Ryan Reynolds was turning into a disaster. The chef and businesswoman "sent her team down to save us," Lively explains, adding, "She called her friends who have a home in South Carolina and set us up at the most amazing getaway. This is the day of our wedding!”

So, how did Lively, 26, and Stewart, 72, become such close pals? "She moved into my neighborhood a couple of years ago with Ryan -- before they got married they bought a house right around the corner from my house. And they started to come over, not to borrow sugar, but just as friends," Stewart told HuffPost Entertainment during the Atlantic City Food and Wine Festival in New Jersey at Caesars Hotel and Casino on July 26. As the lifestyle icon explained, the couple eventually moved to "another place which is more private," but still nearby.

"They're very friendly, very nice people," she added. "In a way, kind of shy -- not shy on the screen, at all, if you've seen any of Blake's movies -- but very shy in person. But she's a baker and a homemaker and now she's starting her own blog [Preserve] ... I haven't seen it yet."

As for what Stewart thinks about Lively becoming "the next Martha Stewart," the mother-of-all-how-to's said, matter of factly, "Let her try."

"I don't mean that facetiously!" she continued, laughing off the comment. "I mean, it's stupid, she could be an actress! Why would you want to be me if you could be an actress? I just did a movie yesterday, though -- I can't even tell you about it -- but I want to be Blake Lively," she joked.

And just like Lively, Stewart has a thing for the one-and-only, Beyonce.

"Every day I get starstruck by somebody or something," she said. "It's fun to admire and to learn from people who are better at everything than you are, so I have many heroes I worship, like Derek Jeter -- I can't play baseball like Derek Jeter! And Beyonce -- I certainly can't dance and sing like Beyonce!"

Nicki Minaj 'Anaconda' Memes Are The Best Things On The Internet Right Now

When Nicki Minaj released the racy cover art for her upcoming single "Anaconda," she probably had no clue that it would spark an onslaught of hilarious memes. But it did, and Minaj clearly isn't mad about it, as she posted the following Photoshop masterpieces to her Instagram account:

The "I'm Feeling Lucky"

The Marge Minaj

The "In This Rando's Dreams"

The "Statue Of Nicki"

The "Nick(i)toons Will Never Be The Same"

The "Work Of Art"

The "Simba Minaj"

Twitter also had a field day photoshopping different heads on Minaj's body, but there's one clear winner here:

The "AnaconDrake"

As MTV helpfully pointed out, there's also already a ton of merchandise featuring the "Anaconda" cover art, including a t-shirt, duvet cover and shower curtain. Yep, a shower curtain.

But hey, any publicity's good publicity, right Nicki?

This All-Male A Cappella Group's Hips Don't Lie, And Shakira Loves Them For It

Out Of The Blue, an all-male student a cappella group, chose to harmonize -- and swish their hips -- to a medley of Shakira songs for their latest video and charity single. Clad in Oxford University blue, their talent is on full display as they cycle through "Hips Don't Lie," "Whenever, Wherever," and "Waka Waka (This Time For Africa)."

Despite their "macho exterior," the guys confess on their website to having "a soft spot for giving [their] hips a little exercise." Members not-so-secretly harbor love for Zumba and belly dancing.

And, as luck would have it, their passion for physical and vocal performance paid off. Even Shakira's a fan.

"Hey @ootboxford, we LOVE your a capella Shak medley!" she tweeted Wednesday.
That's a pretty powerful commendation coming from the singer herself.

To top it all off, proceeds from the sale of the medley will benefit the Helen and Douglas House, an Oxford children's hospice currently undergoing a costly renovation.

Which means we get a guilt-free pass to humming this under our breath for the rest of the day.

Teens Are Totally Weirded Out By 'Weird Al' Yankovic

If you've ever enjoyed a parody video on YouTube, you may owe 'Weird Al' Yankovic a thank you.

The musician was one of the first artists to ever make a career out of parodying other musicians' work. Years later, the trend of parody videos caught on thanks to YouTube and other video content channels, but 'Weird Al' deserves some credit for kicking things off.

In the most recent installment of The Fine Bros "teens react" series, a group of teenagers watched 'Weird Al' Yankovic videos, both old and new.

"Can we replace Iggy Azalea with 'Weird Al'?" One asked upon seeing Yankovic's parody of "Fancy."

But some kids were totally baffled by the star's take on today's pop hits.

"I have no idea who he is," one teen said.

Hilariously, the group was only reacting to some of 'Weird Al''s most recent work. You would probably be even more confused (and weirded out) if you came across some of his classic earlier videos, which you can check out here.

Just when you thought your Monday couldn't get worse, we give you this creepy photo of Justin Bieber's attempt at facial hair.

The 20-year-old and his barely-there mustache attended the Young Hollywood Awards in Los Angeles on July 27:

But Bieber isn't all bad. Though his facial hair didn't do him any favors, his adorable date for the night certainly evened the score. As the Champ of Charity award recipient for his work with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Bieber invited Make-A-Wish participant Grace Kesablak on stage to accept the award with him. He and the little girl also snapped some photos on the red carpet together:

There Are Lap Dances At Gathering Of The Juggalos

The days are long, the sun is scorching and that means ...

It's time for the Gathering of the Juggalos!

For some, that means hearing some of their favorite bands. For others, it's a quick and painless way to be labeled a gang member by the FBI for some reason. For this guy, it means getting a big ol' lap dance.

"THE IMAGE BELOW IS OF A CLOTHED LAP DANCE, CLICK TO REVEAL"

TMZ spotted this Instagram post from Three 6 Mafia's DJ Paul showing just one of the many noteworthy and thrilling things that takes place during this meeting of Insane Clown Posse fans.

For more on exactly what is going on here, let's go to the Riverfront Times:

The man's name is Big LA. He is here at the Gathering of the Juggalos with Mike Busey (and the "Busey Beauties"), an Orlando-based full-service party organization headed up by the nephew of celebrated actor and legendary madman Gary Busey. Together, Busey, Big LA and their beauties have been operating something of an outdoor strip club here on the grounds.

You get a free clothed lap dance with every T-shirt.

But, very importantly, these are not the only lap dances to go down at the G o' G's.

Last year, the Village Voice covered the story of a teen from the Make a Wish Foundation who got a lap dance at the Illinois festival.

Here's the whole clip from DJ Paul

Freddie Prinze Jr. Calls Kiefer Sutherland 'Most Unprofessional Dude In The World'

$

Bad-boy extraordinaire Kiefer Sutherland suffered another blow to his reputation this weekend when Freddie Prinze Jr., who starred in Season 8 of "24," did not use the kindest words to describe the actor.

"I did '24,' it was terrible. I hated every moment of it," Prinze told ABC News, while promoting the new Disney XD series "Star Wars Rebels" at Comic Con. "Kiefer was the most unprofessional dude in the world. That's not me talking trash. I'd say it to his face. I think everyone that's worked with him has said that. I just wanted to quit the business after that. So, I just sort of stopped."

Prinze's "24" stint in 2010 was his last credit until the 2012 TV movie "Happy Valley," save for a single episode of "Psych."

"I went and worked for Vince McMahon at the WWE, for Christ's sake, and it was a crazier job than working with Kiefer," he said.

The Prinze-Sutherland beef didn't end with Comic Con. TMZ reports that sources close to Prinze say Sutherland's temperamental behavior stemmed from alcohol consumption that resulted in Sutherland arriving to set drunk and forcing everyone to wait for hours until he was ready. One source reportedly said Prinze was in the wings to take over the series but became fed up when producers would "keep rewarding" Sutherland despite his antics.

"Kiefer worked with Freddie Prinze Jr. more than five years ago, and this is the first he has heard of Freddie’s grievances," Sutherland's rep told HuffPost Entertainment in a statement. "Kiefer enjoyed working with Freddie and wishes him the best.”

Prinze, of course, is not the first of Sutherland's "24" co-stars to criticize his professionalism. During a June 2013 appearance on "Fox & Friends," Shohreh Aghdashloo hinted that Sutherland may have had a hand in (spoiler alert) her character being killed off the series due to their on-set clashes.

"I’m afraid working with him proved to be hard. That young man was pretty angry," she said. "At the end of the day, I thought he was angry with himself. The plot changed. I have a feeling that he did [have a role in my departure]."

For more from Prinze, including an anecdote about how "24" dealt with his height disparity with Sutherland, head to ABC News.

Why Everybody Hates Blake Lively's New Website

$
0
0

Blake Lively's new lifestyle website, Preserve, has been mercilessly mocked with fiendish, snarky glee since it debuted last Monday. And honestly, it's hard not to get behind the haters. The site -- with its skinny-girls-only ethos (one skirt Lively peddles comes in extra-small only), painfully over-the-top writing ("At once structured and chaotic, the great American BBQ is, indubitably, a rollicking repast") and ridiculously overpriced products ($18 jar of pickles, $400 travel bag) -- is an exercise in A-list pretension nearly as obnoxious as Gwynnie's notorious Goop.

Putting cynicism aside (for a brief moment), Lively does devote a whole section of Preserve to her philanthropic cause, The Covenant House, an organization fighting trafficking, youth abuse and homelessness. Splurge on, say, a wooden cutting board -- just $55! -- and a percentage will be donated to the cause. So there's that.

Still, there's something about the enterprise that makes us non-extra-small-wearing, not-filthy-rich peons cringe. Lively isn't the only one causing annoyance -- Gwyneth Paltrow and now Reese Witherspoon are also pitching themselves as the lifestyle gurus we never knew we needed. On some level, this makes sense. After all, we do idolize celebrities and trust them as arbiters of all things amazing. Hence, we flip through the pages of People to coo over their red carpet fashion, and tremble at the idea of (gasp!) meeting them in person.

But there's an implicit arrangement that sustains this dysfunctional relationship: We can treat celebrities like demi-gods, but they can't tell us they're demi-gods. Perhaps it's tied up in self-loathing; on some level, we hate ourselves for coveting the lives of people we don't even know, so this precarious dynamic only works if said stars allow us to preserve some modicum of self-respect, i.e. the adoration has to be on our terms. The moment they openly admit they're superior to us -- and ask us to pay homage by supporting their lifestyle -- the power imbalance becomes too explicit.

Psychologically speaking, envy is dangerously connected to low self-esteem; knocking those we envy down is a mechanism to protect ourselves from debilitating feelings of comparative inadequacy. Clinical Psychologist Mary C. Lamia, Psychology Today:

Fearing any eruption of inadequacy or disappointment in your self can motivate you to protect yourself by diminishing the importance of the envied other by devaluing them. You are engaged in devaluing when you have belittling thoughts about another person, such as petty criticisms.

Hence, we are quick to bash Lively and her highfalutin site, which seems designed solely to "preserve" her envied image as a gorgeous, rich, charming star with a Sexiest Man Alive husband and a fabulous manse in the countryside. Then again, damn she's beautiful, rich and charming.

I'd be lying if I said I won't be back to her site soon.

Drag Race Star Alaska: Sharon Needles Breakup Still Leads to Awkward Moments

Call Alaska Thunderfuck a drag queen, musician or reality-television sensation. After her upcoming appearance in the San Francisco-based production Sex and the City: Live -- which opened July 24 -- you can even call her an actress. But the performer scoffs at the idea that RuPaul's Drag Race made her a "superstar."

"It's not legitimate superstardom, because if it was that, I'd have paparazzi outside my house," joked Thunderfuck during a recent telephone interview. "I'm just happy to be popular and have a job."

2014-07-25-Alaska.jpeg

While the appropriateness of the "superstar" label is apparently open to debate, simply calling her "popular" is an understatement. Since placing in the top three on the fifth season of LOGO's hugely successful reality-TV competition for the title of "America's Next Top Drag Superstar," this affable queen has become one of the series' go-to performers.

Whether it's nightclub engagements around the world or performing at regional Pride festivities (including her first trip to Alaska for Anchorage Pride), Thunderfuck is working nonstop. Her recent music video, "Your Make Up Looks Terrible" -- a memorable quotation coined when she was competing on Drag Race -- is pushing toward half a million YouTube views, and she promises a new song soon. (It's called "Nails." You heard it here first!)

In her latest adventure, Thunderfuck joins Bay Area standouts Heklina (Carrie Bradshaw), D'Arcy Drollinger (Samantha) and Lady Bear (Miranda) for a laugh-out-loud funny staging of Sex and the City. The show has a limited 12-performance run.

"I'm so excited to be, like, acting in a theater again," said Thunderfuck, who plays the somewhat mousy, maternal Charlotte, a character made famous by actress Kristin Davis. "I love it."

"I'm such a theater person, so I feel really at home when I'm in rehearsals and in a regular production, like, onstage," she confided. "That's the most exciting part to me."

Equally exciting, Thunderfuck shared, is playing against her type. "I get to be brunette," she deadpans, "so I don't know how it's going to go!"

Being blond isn't the only thing the gender bender is known for, of course. Underlying the joke is recognition that fans around the world know mostly what they've seen on Drag Race -- and where Thunderfuck is concerned, that's quite a bit!

After she auditioned for multiple seasons, fans rallied behind the unique, zany star's efforts. That kicked into high gear after her then-partner, Sharon Needles, not only made it onto the show but won Season 4.

Throughout Needles' ascent and Alaska's eventual casting, Drag Race heavily focused on the couple's "kai kai" relationship (gay translation: "partnered drag queens"). After two full seasons of exposure, they were considered by most a gay "power couple." Fans and LGBT press alike were hanging on their every move, declaring the misfits beacons of hope and true love. Such intense fan investment in her personal life was great when times were good, Thunderfuck said, but that eventually changed.

At some point the relationship became rocky, and the dynamic duo decided to go their separate ways. While Thunderfuck said that those close to the couple knew this well in advance, they made their late-2013 breakup as public as the relationship itself, issuing a media statement about it.

2014-07-25-SexInTheCity.jpg

"A lot of people didn't see the press release," Thunderfuck admitted. "It's weird having people know all your business, but the weirder thing is a lot of people don't know. They just know the stuff they know from Drag Race."

Their relationship is more than six months in the past, Thunderfuck stated. Still, new viewers are continually introduced to the relationship as Seasons 4 and 5 live on in global reruns. This has led to some uncomfortable situations for the star.

"Every day I get tweets and messages that are like, 'You and Sharon are such an inspiration,' or, 'You're such a beautiful couple, and I love you both!'" Thunderfuck confessed. "Or I'll be out at a gig and people will be like, 'So how's Sharon?'"

While it can be awkward at times, Thunderfuck wouldn't change anything about her Drag Race experience. After all, she said, letting viewers into her life "was what we signed up for" when she auditioned.

"It's weird that everybody knows things about my life, but it's kind of what we were asking for," she told me with a laugh. "So I'm kind of happy about it -- I guess."

Yup. Sounds like the problems of a "legitimate superstar" to me!

Sex and the City: Live runs through Aug. 10 at the Victoria Theatre. Showings occur Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 7 p.m. For more information visit trannyshack.com.

On 'The Bachelorette' Finale, We Learned That Sex Happens -- Even On Reality TV

$

"Let's talk about sex, baby." --contestants on "The Bachelorette," last night.

During the season 10 finale of "The Bachelorette," Andi Dorfman's heartbroken runner-up, Nick Viall, made a so-called "shocking" statement. On the July 28 live "After the Final Rose" special, he called out Dorfman for sleeping with him in the fantasy suite and then sending him home.

"Knowing how in love with you I was, if you weren't in love with me, I'm just not sure why you made love with me?" he asked.

"That's kind of below the belt, and I think that's something that should be kept private," Dorfman replied, proceeding to calmly explain that her respect for him and their relationship is what prompted her to end things before he even picked out a Neil Lane diamond.

Predictable headlines ensued: "Andi's shocking sex secret revealed," Fox News declared. But what is actually so surprising about the fact that a single woman slept with a man she was dating, and then decided it woudn't work out? Absolutely nothing.

Here are a few nuggets of truth:

1. Sex happens -- even on "The Bachelor" and "The Bachelorette." And yes, relationships where sex occurred can end a few weeks later.

2. There's nothing surprising or upsetting (and there shouldn't be) about consenting adults having sex when they're given a private hotel suite after dating for nearly two months.

3. A man is allowed to feel emotionally distraught over a sexual encounter that does not develop into the relationship he wanted.

4. Andi -- or any woman, reality star or not -- has no obligation to marry every man she has sex with. And not wanting to commit her entire life to someone just because she slept with him does not make her a "cavalier" person.

This isn't the first time "Bachelor" and "Bachelorette" contestants have alluded to sex on the show, or admitted that it happened after the fact. It's simply the first time it's been spoken about directly -- a testament to the fact that the franchise has a whole bunch of "weird sex issues," as Slate's Willa Paskin termed them back in February.

"'The Bachelor' plays the prude, only ever speaking of sex in the most coded, vague terms, like a pimp who blushes at the word 'vagina' and claims his clientele are just playing cards," Paskin wrote.

For shows that never ever explicitly talk about sex, "The Bachelor" and "The Bachelorette" are obsessed with dancing around the subject.

Season 16 "Bachelor" winner, Courtney Robertson, went sexy skinny dipping with Ben Flajnik, and recently confessed that, "Yes. Ben and I did have sex in the ocean. On-camera," in her book I Didn't Come Here to Make Friends: Confessions of a Reality Show Villain. (She also alleged that the producers didn't provide condoms to contestants in the Fantasy Suites, which opens a whole other can of highly problematic, sex-negative worms.)

Clare Crawley had a similarly steamy ocean encounter with Juan Pablo on season 18, after which she was essentially slut-shamed, despite never actually admitting that sex occurred.

And Sean Lowe and Catherine Giudici's sexless premarital relationship got so much attention that there was literally a camera focused on their presumably soon-to-be-utilized honeymoon suite during the entirety of their 2+ hour TV wedding.

There are certainly far better venues than national television, (like, probably anywhere else), to hash out one's heartbreak over a sexual encounter. But given that "The Bachelorette" is a show that at least purports to be about love -- true, long-lasting love, of which sex is nearly always an integral part -- the fact that it came up during a closure conversation shouldn't be "shocking."

For Andi and Nick, last night's sexy "bombshell" was an embarassing public moment that would have seemed quite mundane in private -- an incident bound to create overblown headlines and aghast looks from live audience members, possibly (probably) manipulated by the producers. But for those watching, it was revealing.

Dating and romance and love and lust and heartbreak... and sex... are often a package deal. It's about time we -- and our TV franchises -- got on board, no shame involved.

Leigh Blickley contributed reporting to this piece.

And The Final, Final Rose Goes To...
Josh "Former Baseball Bro" Murray. May they live happily ever after in perhaps-one-day-wedded, Atlanta-based bliss. Here's hoping those crazy kids make it work now that the cameras have stopped rolling.

Sarah McLachlan on Music and the Industry

These questions originally appeared on Quora.

Answers by Sarah McLachlan, Singer/Songwriter

What does music mean to you?

Music is a gift, it is a universal emotional language that allows us to feel, it brings us closer to ourselves and others in that it creates an avenue for empathy and understanding. It can often communicate something that cannot be put into words, a resonance of the spirit and a recognition that another feels what you feel and understands.

What's it like, as a musician, to know that you've had a significant positive emotional impact on the lives of others?

I think the greatest validation for me as a musician is having people I don't know come up to me and tell me that something I've created has come into their lives and impacted them in a positive way. It's wonderful because songwriting is a lonely isolating process so to put it out there when you are done and have that kind of response is amazing.

What distinguishes "an artist" from just a musician?

I think any musician who can take a piece of music and not just play it but can put themselves and all their passion into it becomes an artist even if it's only them hearing it. The artistry is in creating something new and communicating a deeper level of understanding. Three people can tell you the same story but the one who puts their passion into it is the one you remember an feel.

How similar are songwriting and poetry writing?

I think they are two different things although I know some would argue. A lyric typically needs the music and melody to lift it and bring it to life, they need and support each other.

What song on your new album, Shine On, was the hardest to write? Which was the easiest?

"Flesh and Blood" lyrically was the hardest to finish. I recorded the vocal on the last days of mixing and I think Monsters was the easiest.

Grammy Awards: What is it like to receive a Grammy Nomination?

It's flattering and I do enjoy winning in the moment but it does not define success to me.

What do you think the future of the music industry will look like?

That's the big question, I doubt there will be record labels as I don't know how they can make money anymore, streaming is the way music is being heard these days, immediate access to whatever and whenever you want. People will always want new music so I know it will continue to be created, but the old model is dying on the vine.

Ariana Grande Talks Relationship With Her Father And 'The Hardest Thing' She's Had To Overcome

With a just-leaked, ridiculously catchy single featuring Jessie J and Nicki Minaj and a new album set to drop at the end of August, it's safe to say that Ariana Grande is having a good summer.

But the "Problem" singer proves that even the most successful pop stars aren't exempt from personal struggles. As Seventeen's newest cover girl, Ariana opened up to the magazine about her relationship with her father and the recent passing of her grandfather, which occurred after her interview.

In a statement made to Seventeen, the singer said:

This interview took place before I lost my grandfather. Reading it back now is, of course, very hard but I'm so grateful that I spoke briefly about some of the wisdom he shared with me in this interview. I hope the Seventeen readers find it helpful and can relate.

Scroll down for highlights from the interview -- including lessons learned and getting over insecurities -- and head over to Seventeen.com to read more. Pick up this month's issue of Seventeen, which hits stands on August 5.

On putting herself out there and being totally exposed...
“It’s tough to spend some of the most important years of your life in front of so many strangers who want to pick you apart. Insecurity has been the hardest thing I’ve had to overcome. I think everyone my age struggles with that because everyone strives for approval and wants to feel loved.”

On how she gets over her insecurities...
“I focus on what’s important. My grandpa is sick, so I focus on him every day. I’m having the biggest song of my career so far, and all I can think about is my grandpa, because that’s what’s important to me.”

On the biggest lesson she’s learned in the past few years...
“Being okay with not having the answers to everything. I feel like for the first time in my life, I’m really okay. I used to freak out about everything all the time. I used to be like, ‘Oh my God, somebody said this!’ Everything used to be such a big deal! But now, I feel I can handle everything that comes my way with a calm energy.”

On the toughest thing she has ever had to deal with...
“Falling out of touch with my dad. It’s private, but it happened last year. It took me so long to be okay with it. The thing that got me there was embracing the fact that that I am made up of half my dad, and a lot of my traits come from him. So much of me comes from my father, and for so long, I didn’t like that about myself. I had to accept that it’s okay not to get along with somebody and still love them.”

OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder Will Leave His Mark On 'The Giver'

$

The film adaptation of Lois Lowry's iconic dystopian novel "The Giver" arrives in a few short weeks. Among the many fans of the book awaiting the release on the big screen is OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder, whose band penned a song for the movie's soundtrack.

During a visit to New York City, Tedder sat down with The Huffington Post at the Bowery Hotel to discuss the song, called "Ordinary Human," featured in the film and a promotional trailer.

ryan tedder huffpost

For Tedder, the band's involvement with "The Giver" came as a pleasant surprise; hand-picked by The Weinstein Company, Tedder didn't believe it at first.

"I'm very cynical about most things, and we're not -- I'm not -- a cultural darling," Tedder said. "We don't float across the covers of Us Weekly. People don't follow me shopping. So, when we get hand-picked for things, I always think, did somebody pass and we're the second choice, or did they really want us? But they did."

Once he viewed the film, though, the inspiration for the track came naturally.

"I saw the movie and it was incredible," Tedder said. "I told the producers I knew exactly what to do, and started writing 'Ordinary Human' that day."

In writing the track, Tedder strived for universal appeal and resonance, with equal consideration for the film's narrative.

"The idea [behind the song] is that I'm an ordinary human with ordinary ways -- but sometimes, I medicate," Tedder said. "And that's everybody. I was thinking about the days where you think, 'God, I feel like shit today, like a nobody -- I'm three drinks in and it's 3 p.m.' There are millions who relate to that. Medication can come in many, many forms."

There's another reason this project is special to Tedder: the book, "The Giver," holds a place in his heart. Ever since he was a child, Tedder has been an avid reader.

"At around 7 or 8, I started reading ferociously," he said. "I would always get those Scholastic newsletters, and I would go through and checkmark the books I wanted; 'The Giver' happened to be one. At that point, I'd read George Orwell's '1984' -- the quintessential dystopian book -- and 'The Giver' reminded me of that."
