Who’s that girl? It’s Swift!

When J.J. Met Mrs. Hughes ...

Nerd alert! While in the UK promoting "Star Trek Into Darkness," director J.J. Abrams somehow found time to pay a visit to "Downton Abbey" ... talk about a crossover we never predicted!

Abrams' production company, Bad Robot, tweeted a time-bending photo of Abrams stealing Mrs. Patmore's (Lesley Nicol) thunder in the kitchen, much to the disapproval of a stern-looking Mrs. Hughes (Phyllis Logan).

We're not sure who we're more jealous of, Abrams for getting a sneak peek at the developments of "Downton" Season 4 before it premieres, or the "Downton" cast and crew for getting the opportunity to pick the brain of the man behind the reinvigorated "Star Wars" and "Trek" franchises. While 1966 is still a long way off in the world of "DA," maybe Baby George will grow up to be a Trekkie?

"Downton Abbey" Season 4 premieres in fall 2013 in the UK and will likely debut in January 2014 in the US. "Star Trek Into Darkness" is released in US theaters on May 17.

Match Made In Heaven?

Jenny McCarthy stopped by HuffPost Live on Wednesday, and talk inevitably turned to her dating life.

Host Marc Lamont Hill asked the model about comedian Louis C.K., whom Howard Stern had tried to set her up with in early April.

"After I saw that Howard was trying to set me up with him I did go online and take a look and I thought he was a very funny comedian," she said. The only problem? "He seems like he's very busy, which comics are because they tour the country so much."

Nevertheless, McCarthy said that "he's not a pass, he's a question mark," calling him a "likable guy" and "good looking."

McCarthy, who famously dated Jim Carrey, was married to actor John Asher from 1999 to 2005, with whom she has a son.

Fellow divorcé Louie C.K. has two daughters with artist Alix Bailey, whom he divorced in 2008.

What do you think -- could it be a match made in divorcé heaven? Watch the video above for more on McCarthy, then click through the slideshow to see what Louis C.K and other stars said about dating post-split.

How Leah Remini's Mom Convinced Her To Join 'Family Tools'

$

LOS ANGELES — Leah Remini had good reason to join the new ABC sitcom "Family Tools."

The former "The King of Queens" star has a development deal with the network, and ABC Entertainment Group President Paul Lee asked her to be part of the comedy debuting 8:30 p.m. EDT on Wednesday.

Then Remini's mother weighed in.

"She said, `Who's in it?'" the actress recalled. After hearing the cast included J.K. Simmons ("Juno," "The Closer"), Remini's mom replied, "He's a real actor, Leah. You should do it."

"As opposed to me," Remini said, wryly. "He's real, he does drama."

Remini has made her career largely in comedy but her mom still can brag on her. Besides the 1998-2007 run opposite Kevin James in CBS' "King of Queens," Remini has worked steadily in a string of sitcoms including "Cheers" and "In the Motherhood." She was a co-host on "The Talk" for a year and is venturing into reality TV production with her husband, actor Angelo Pagan.

(All Remini will say of her experience with "The Talk" is that "a real friendship was born out of that" with Holly Robinson Peete, another host who was released from the CBS show after the first season.)

In "Family Tools," Remini plays Terry, sister to Tony (Simmons). When the irascible Tony faces a health crisis, Terry forces him to bring in his flighty son Jack (Kyle Bornheimer) to help run Tony's handyman business.

Edi Gathegi, Johnny Pemberton and Danielle Nicolet co-star in the sitcom based on the British comedy "White Van Man."

Remini said she and Simmons represent "the grandpa and grandma of the show," the seasoned actors.

"Kyle and Edi and everyone are going over their lines, rehearsing scenes with each other, very actorlike. And J.K. and I are ... `What did you do last night?'" she said.

"Family Tools" does have its challenges: It's a single-camera comedy filmed without a studio audience, a change from the three-camera sitcoms Remini is used to taping in front of a responsive crowd.

"You get an honest reaction from an audience. They're going to laugh if they think it's funny," she said. But on a single-camera show, even the crew has to remain silent.

"I found myself going up to the lighting guys and saying, `Is that funny?'" the 42-year-old actress said. "I'm so used to that immediate gratification."

PHOTOS: Lea Michele's Home Gets A Cozy Makeover

When "Glee" star Lea Michele handed her California home over to Domaine's editor-at-large Estee Stanley (who also happens to be her stylist) for a makeover, she had only two rules: The space had to be cozy and her Barbra Streisand photo collection was off-limits.

With those two directions leading the way, Stanley and her team filled the starlet's home with pieces like a Brenda Antin couch upholstered in French linen and an English library cabinet from Nathan Turner to add warmth. She also used the actress' own artwork and books to personalize the space.

The whole thing took four hours and the end results were just to Lea Michele's liking. “She squealed and sort of almost cried,” Stanley said. “I think she was shocked that she loved it.”

Click through our slideshow to see some photos of the home. And be sure to head over to the newly-launched Domaine for more information.

Lauren Graham Has Mae Whitman's Next Role Lined Up

$

0

NEW YORK — Lauren Graham has a day job as Sarah Braverman on the NBC drama "Parenthood," but she decided to fill up her free time by writing a novel.

"I don't know why I don't pick up knitting or watercolors," the 46-year-old actress joked in a recent interview, "but I wanted to write a book. There were times and days when it was fun and exhilarating and a lot of days where it was really hard."

"Someday, Someday, Maybe," published by Ballantine Books and now in stores, follows a 20-something aspiring actress named Franny Banks who is living in New York City in the 1990s.

The story isn't autobiographical, but obviously Graham could relate to Franny's struggle to break into show biz.

"I was more interested in (the) waiting, auditioning ... and that feeling when you're on the outside of something looking in. So many people in general and young actors specifically spend so much time there, and many people never get beyond that, I just thought that's what I wanted to focus on."

Graham illustrates parts of the book with pages of a calendar showing Franny's erratic schedule with multiple auditions one day and, for some weeks at a time, none at all.

"In the `90s, the way you kept your calendar was to write it down, and I well remember at the end of a year you could look back and see literally, physically your year. ... So much of being an actor at any level is waiting. Especially when you're starting out, the waves are even more dramatic of nothing versus something."

Graham's publisher has already asked her for a second book. She thinks Franny's story will continue in Los Angeles.

"I never want to do necessarily the world of superfame and glamour and parties and clubs. A, because I don't know that world and B, it's not interesting to me. But I would like to see this character do her first series. ... I think you could have a lot of fun in Los Angeles. ... L.A. is easier to make fun of and I would really like the opportunity to do that," she laughed.

Once again, Graham will have to fit in writing with her "Parenthood" schedule. The series has been picked up for a fifth season and this time for 22 episodes. The show hasn't had a full season order since year two.

"Given everything else that's going on (at NBC), we sort of emerged as slow and steady and you just don't know. It's year to year."

Could Franny's story be adapted for film or television?

"To me it would be a compelling TV show because it lends itself to that serialization ... and Mae Whitman will star as Franny Banks ... after she's done playing my daughter on `Parenthood,'" joked Graham.

Fans of Graham's previous series "Gilmore Girls" have renewed enthusiasm and hope for a possible film, thanks to Rob Thomas' wildly successful use of the Kickstarter website to finance a movie of the defunct TV series "Veronica Mars."

Graham says it's not her decision.

"The difference with `Veronica Mars' is they had a script already and the star and the creator had a united vision in terms of doing it. I had talked to ("Gilmore Girls" creator) Amy (Sherman-Palladino)... years ago about a movie.

"It's not up to me, I can't make it happen on paper, but I understand, and it is a funny world now where like fans made a `Veronica Mars' movie happen, and I'm sure people are like, `Well, hold on. I want my favorite thing to be a movie,' and I totally get it and I wish I had a more satisfying answer."

Melo's Wife Fires Back Over Taunt

One day after talking trash to Carmelo Anthony at Madison Square Garden, Celtics reserve guard Jordan Crawford was on the receiving end of some harsh remarks on Twitter. Anthony's wife, La La, fired back at Crawford on Thursday.

After not playing a single minute in the Celtics' Game 5 win over the Knicks on Wednesday night, Crawford engaged in a shouting match with Carmelo and Knicks point guard Raymond Felton. As the New York Daily News reported, "amateur lip-readers across the Internet suggested that it appeared that Crawford made a vulgar comment about Anthony’s wife" during the heated exchange. The editors at the News felt confident enough in that appraisal of the content of the conversation that they referenced it on the back page on Thursday.

daily news crawford

Several hours after that paper hit the newstands, La La hit back at Crawford on Twitter. La La's tweet was accompanied by a link to an image from her Instagram account that read "Strong Women Only Intimidate Weak Men."

Perhaps in response to La La's tweet or just to the rampantspeculation over what he shouted (which was often accompanied by this Vine), Crawford denied he said anything about Anthony's wife.

For his part, Anthony downplayed the incident when he spoke with reporters after the game.

"I ain't thinking about no Jordan Crawford. I don't think he deserves for you to be typing right now," Carmelo said, via Bill Reiter of FOXSports.com.

Apparently, La La felt that a bit of typing was in order.

LOS ANGELES — Ashton Kutcher's production company has settled a lawsuit against the California Department of Motor Vehicles over a planned reality series focusing on the agency's offices.

Court records in Los Angeles show Kutcher's production company Katalyst Media Inc. has settled its case for undisclosed terms. The company sued the DMV in June claiming it reneged on a reality show deal worth at least $1.4 million.

The lawsuit stated the DMV backed out of the reality show on claims it was no longer in the agency's best interests, but it had already been promised to the TruTV channel.

Katalyst's attorney Michael E. Weinstein declined to comment in an email message.

The DMV wrote in a statement that the case was amicably resolved and no further comments would be issued.

WATCH: Reese Witherspoon Freaks Out In Arrest Video

The video of Reese Witherspoon's run-in with the cops has finally leaked--and it's a doozy. (Watch above.)

In the short clip, which was put out by TMZ, the 37-year-old "Legally Blonde" star drunkenly argues with an Atlanta police officer, and implies that her celebrity status will bring him problems.

Witherspoon was arrested for disorderly conduct on April 19 after her husband, Jim Toth, was pulled over for drunk driving (he was also arrested).

As the video begins, Witherspoon gets out of her car and confronts the officer, who asks her, "Ma'am, what'd I just tell you to do?"

"I'd like to know what's going on," she says. "I'm a U.S. citizen. I'm allowed to stand on American ground and ask any question I want to ask."

At that point, the officer handcuffs her. "This is harassment," Witherspoon continues. "You're harassing me as an American citizen. I have done nothing against the law."

"Do you know my name?" she later asks. When he says he does not need to know, she says "you're about to find out who I am."

As the video ends, Witherspoon is escorted into a police car, and her husband apologizes. "I'm sorry," he tells the cop. "I had nothing to do with that."

Days after the incident, Witherspoon released a statement saying that she was "deeply embarrassed" about her behavior.

On Tuesday, she offered another mea culpa to George Stephanopoulos, saying of her attitude toward the cop, "I was so disrespectful to him. I have police officers in my family. I work with police officers every day. I know better. It's just unacceptable."

Meet Your 'American Idol' Top 3

The "Idol" results are in and Amber Holcomb is out.

It was déjà vu during this week's "Idol" results show as the women of the Top 4 held hands while host Ryan Seacrest announced who was in and who was out. Angie Miller was the first to enter the Top 3, where she'll be doing home visits along with Candice Glover and Kree Harrison.

Because no one was eliminated last week, this week's "Idol" results were determined by combining the votes from last week and this week and unfortunately for Amber, she had the lowest total.

It was a "Great Gatsby" promotional themed evening and the Top 4 kicked things off with their rendition of "Crazy In Love" a la the film's soundtrack. "Idol" Season 7 alum David Cook returned to perform his new single "Laying Me Low," while Will.i.am. stopped by the "Idol" results show to sing his "Great Gatsby" hit "Bang Bang" (complete with a black and white filter).

Before the results for this week's "Idol" were announced, guest mentor Harry Connick Jr. debuted his new single "Every Man Should Know" and said that he and Randy Jackson kissed and made up over dinner after their argument during Wednesday's performance show.

Do you agree with this week's "Idol" results? Who do you hope wins it all? Sound off in the comments!

"American Idol" airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.

Slayer Guitarist Dies At Age 49

LOS ANGELES — Jeff Hanneman, a founding member of Slayer whose career was irrevocably changed after a spider bite, has died. He was 49.

Slayer spokeswoman Heidi Robinson-Fitzgerald said Hanneman died Thursday morning of liver failure at a Los Angeles hospital with his wife, Kathy, by his side.

The guitarist had recently begun writing songs with the band in anticipation of recording a new album later this year. He had been slowly recovering from what was believed to be a spider bite that nearly cost him his arm after he failed to seek immediate treatment.

"The music industry has lost a true trailblazer, and our deepest sympathies go out to his family, his bandmates and fans around the world who mourn his untimely passing," said Neil Portnow, president and CEO of the Recording Academy, in a statement.

Robinson-Fitzgerald said it's believed the spider bite contributed to the failure of Hanneman's liver, but it is unclear whether an autopsy will be scheduled. No funeral arrangements have been made.

"Jeff Hanneman will always be a metal god," rocker Andrew W.K. posted on Twitter.

Hanneman co-founded the thrash metal pioneers in Huntington Beach, Calif., in 1982.

This week's best-dressed list is brought to you by the White House Correspondants' Dinner. Celebrities attended wearing gowns that were sophisticated and stylish, to the point where stars like Amy Poehler, Kerry Washington and Sofia Vergara almost stole the spotlight from FLOTUS (though we think Barack's bangs were the real show-stopper that night).

Katy Perry has been spotted out and about quite a bit lately, and each time she looks better than the last. We are loving her understated, elegant look these days, though an oscillating bra is always entertaining, too.

There was also a healthy dose of black and white patterns on the red carpet this week. From Gwyneth Paltrow to Krysten Ritter to Christina Ricci, ladies gave the graphic color combination a new boost of energy.

The Spy Who Slapped Me: 'The Americans' Cast Spills Secrets (VIDEO)

$

0

The cast and executive producers of "The Americans" sat down on April 26 for a panel discussion of the FX drama at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles, and we've got the entire hour on video for you.

If you're a fan of the show, you may want to watch the whole thing. But be aware, developments that occurred late in Season 1 and in the season finale are discussed by panelists Joe Weisberg (executive producer/creator), Joel Fields (executive producer), Matthew Rhys (who plays Russian spy Philip Jennings), Noah Emmerich (who plays FBI agent Stan Beeman), Margo Martindale (Claudia) and Annet Mahendru (Nina). You'll also want to check out our recent interviews with Rhys, Martindale and Emmerich, and a post-finale chat with Fields and Weisberg.

If you don't have time to watch the whole hour, we've provided the approximate time stamps of different topics of discussion, which include: Keri Russell's propensity for slapping Rhys just before the director shouts "Action;" wigs; the effect of clandestine work on family life; and Stan's complicated love life.

By the way, the panel was moderated by yours truly, and I must confess -- if I had known the camera would be on me that much (or at all), I would have gotten a better wig.

Time stamps for "The Americans" panel discussion:

  • 0:00 Opening remarks
  • 4:00 Introduction of the cast (including the audio of a greeting from Keri Russell, who could not make it due to a film commitment).
  • 6:00 The producers talk about the scene that ended the second season. Rhys jokes about about how laundry loomed so large in the story of the Jennings family. So much folding, so much knitwear!
  • 7:25 Rhys talks about the advanced Soviet wig technology and his various be-wigged identities (and this is where I got the idea to ask him about Fernando, Gordo and his other undercover personas).
  • 8:55 Martindale talks about the scene in which Elizabeth beat up Claudia, Martindale's desire to come back and do more Claudia-Elizabeth scenes, and Claudia's relationship with the Jennings. "I always thought it was a love triangle," Rhys opines.
  • 11:02 Emmerich talks about the love triangle in Stan's life and Mahendru talks about the feelings Nina has for Stan.
  • 13:12 Rhys discusses Clark and his deception of Martha.
  • 14:51 The actors talk about how much their characters are driven by ideology and how much they're motivated by personal agendas.
  • 17:50 The producers share possible time frames for the second season: Ho much time will have passed when Season 2 begins, and what the future may hold for the Russian characters (keeping in mind that Brezhnev dies in 1982).
  • 18:48 Rhys talks about Philip's priorities for the future, and there's talk about the fashions of the early '80s.
  • 20:30 The actors talk stunts, bruises and action scenes. Rhys talks about the thrill of driving the kinds of cars that he saw in his favorite American TV shows of the '80s.
  • 22:30 Does Stan have real feelings for Nina? Could he have done committed the brutal thing we saw him do if he had not seen for himself what the Soviets were capable of? I found Emmerich's response to this question surprising and illuminating (he said, in his view, Stan's murderous act was a matter of strategy and it wasn't a vengeance-driven act). Emmerich also talks about his suspicions (or lack thereof) of his neighbors and he and Rhys pitch an episode in which Philip and Stan go on a fishing trip.
  • 27:48 Martindale talks about the finale scene in which she killed a man, and about the scariness of working with a 1980s Taser, which doesn't sound easy to use.
  • 29:10 Mahendru talks about whether Nina would kill for Russia.
  • 31:05 First audience question: What's the response been from U.S. and Russian authorities? Weisberg talks about the feedback he's gotten from his former colleagues in the CIA.
  • 34:08 Rhys (who is Welsh) talks about maintaining his American accent.
  • 36:28 Rhys responds to a question about whether he prefers the spycraft scenes or emotional moments, and then he talks about how Russell (building on something that happened the first time they read through a scene together) slaps him before cameras roll.
  • 39:35 The producers and Rhys address whether Clark's name is a reference to Clark Kent and Superman.
  • 40:50 Weisberg discusses the fact that, decades ago, the KGB did have agents marry women like Martha (especially in Europe). "Regardless of the outcome, they had fantastic sex lives," Rhys says. "I've been told."
  • 42:35 The actors talk about the research they did for their roles.
  • 46:30 Rhys and the producers talk about how CIA agents tell their kids (when they're old enough) about their real jobs.
  • 48:53 The producers talk about how the focus of the show will remain the Jennings' relationship.
  • 50:08 I ask Rhys whether the chemistry that he and Russell share on screen was apparent in their first meeting. Please note: At about 50:30, there's a glitch in the recording. Move your cursor past that point to about 51 or so -- you won't have missed much. Rhys talks about how he was nervous going into the "chemistry read" meeting with Russell, but he notes that they had an excellent rapport right away.
  • 52:11 Weisberg talks about the premise and origins of the show, and he and Fields talk about their overall goals for "The Americans."
  • 54:03 The producers talk about real-life events affecting their characters (as happened in the episode in which there was an attempt on Reagan's life).
  • 55:38 Rhys talks about Clark's cover story with Martha.
  • 57:06 A question about possible foreign missions from the audience from an American man who grew up in Berlin during the Cold War (the man's father was a journalist -- or was he?).

'Parks & Rec' Finale: Somebody's Pregnant!

Burt Macklin returned in the season finale of "Parks & Recreation," on the case of the positive pregnancy test. He found the test at Ron's cabin while the whole gang was there together, leading him to start an investigation into all of the women around the office, as well as Tom's crazy girlfriend.

He made his way through the office, interrogating everyone -- poor Ann was frustrated that someone else was pregnant as she was trying to get pregnant. But there was one person he didn't anticipate. In fact, he ultimately concluded that it must be his own wife who was pregnant, and got excited at the prospect of being a dad. But it wasn't April.

In fact, it wasn't any of the women from the office, or Tom's crazy girlfriend. It was someone else who had access to the cabin, but who wasn't there that weekend. Andy happened to be in Ron's office when Diane walked in.

"Can we talk? Maybe in private?" she asked Ron, and Andy figured it out. He didn't need Burt Macklin after all.

Executive producer Michael Schur confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that Diane was pregnant, but the focus of her pregnancy next season will be on how it impacts Ron. "He’s going to go through a significant transformation as he prepares to do this gigantic thing, which is to become a biological father," said Schur. "That’s obviously going to be a big part of the year for his character, and it won’t only be in the ‘I have to read some baby books and figure out how to change diapers’ kind of way."

"I literally could not be more excited about the idea of Ron Swanson changing diapers, dealing with lack of sleep and getting a brand-new human life to mold," wrote HitFix of the revelation. "I can already picture the nursery furniture in my head, and all of it is much better-crafted than anything my kids slept in."

While "Parks & Recreation" has not yet been been picked up for a sixth season, it is widely expected to get it. NBC will announce its new fall schedule on Monday, May 13.

'The Office': Dwight Finally Achieves His Dream

Dwight was more humble and decent in the latest episode of "The Office." He had genuinely kind words about Pam, and acknowledged that he had perhaps blown his chance at ever assuming the manager position he'd been coveting so long. But never say never.

David Wallace showed up to give Andy the boot, but he didn't have to. Andy had impulsively decided it was time to stop giving himself excuses to not pursue his dreams of stardom, and so he quit -- and then un-quit, and then quit again, and then made sure he burned his bridges at Dunder-Mifflin by groping Toby and defecating on David's car. Yes, it was gross.

All the while Andy was having a mini-freakout, David was considering Dwight to assume his position. He checked in with Jim, who sincerely said that it was absolutely the right choice. And so Dwight had a banner day, achieving his black belt and assuming the crown of leadership he'd wanted for so long. With just two episodes left to go, The AV Club thought this was a big payoff for fans.

In a nice nod to earlier continuity, Jim insisted on the position of Assistant to the Regional Manager, rather than simply Assistant Regional Manager. Angela, meanwhile, has hit rock bottom. Her cats were taken away and she got evicted from her studio apartment, reluctantly agreeing to move in with Oscar in the closing moments. With him, she declared her love for Dwight.

Will those two come together in the end? There are only two weeks left of "The Office," at 9 p.m. ET on NBC Thursdays, to find out.

'The Big Bang Theory': Bob Newhart Creeped Out By Sheldon

$

Comedy legend Bob Newhart brought his signature stammer and dry wit to "The Big Bang Theory" as one-time children's entertainer, Professor Proton. Both Leonard and Sheldon had grown up glued to his show, which they said was a big reason they got into science in the first place. So when they found out he was available for parties now, they quickly hired him.

Unfortunately, the good professor was under the impression that he was going to be doing his act for kids, as opposed to grown men who were already respected scientists. And nobody can be prepared enough for dealing with Sheldon.

When they met him -- in the stairwell as they'd neglected to tell the 83-year old that the elevator didn't work -- Sheldon was as excited and creepy as expected. He leaned in real close at one point and said, "I can get as close to you as I want without my mom saying it’s going to ruin my eyes."

The professor understandably asked if Sheldon was dangerous. "He's a genius," Leonard responded, but that didn't answer the question.

In the end, trouble with his pacemaker sent the professor to the hospital, with Sheldon not far behind. At his bedside, Sheldon was asked to take over for Professor Proton's next party -- he could be Professor Proton, Jr.

Newart told The Hollywood Reporter that it took a while for him and "Bang" creator Chuck Lorre to work out the details of this gig, but one of his stipulations was that it be a recurring opportunity.

After proving he's as funny now as he's ever been, fans new and old will probably be more than happy to welcome Professor Proton back to the "Big Bang" universe any time. There are only two episodes left of "The Big Bang Theory" this season, Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
