These days, Liberty Ross has become more famous for her husband's cheating scandal with Kristen Stewart than for her fashion industry career. But it looks like she's looking to grab some sartorial attention with her latest getup.

To fete the launch of Kate Moss' new book, the 34-year-old joined the supermodel author along with Marc Jacobs, Florence Welch, Donna Karen and more at the London Bookmarc store on Thursday. So how did she dress to impress the fashion elite? By foregoing a top, naturally.

The British beauty showed off her figure in a slim-fitting, satin blue suit. But since the blazer featured a plunging neckline, the look was decidedly...well, topless. Maybe Liberty is still on an attention high from her epic return to the runway in Alexander Wang's Spring 2013 show. Or maybe the mother of two just liked the outfit.

And since the model has been revealing tidbits about her state of mind via her Alexander Wang confessional video and her blog on Vogue UK, we're going to leave all speculation about what this risqué ensemble says about her current mindset to the rest of the world and just take it at face value. She does look pretty great in it, after all.

Check out the photo and tell us what you think of Liberty Ross' suit-sans-top look. Would you try it?

Even though this risqué outfit remained intact, here are some instances where that wasn't the case:

Why Is Tulisa Facing Being Dropped By X Factor?

Tulisa is facing being dropped as a judge from the X Factor at the end of this series as bosses on the show think she is too distracted by her personal life.

The programme's producers are getting increasingly annoyed by Tulisa's poor timekeeping, as she is often late to meetings and rehearsals.

The controversy surrounding her latest romance with Newcastle United footballer Danny Simpson is also giving them headaches, as they are concerned that it is affecting the family image of the show.

A source at the show told the Sun: "She needs to buck up her ideas and give her performance on the show more attention."

They have already been concerned about the type of men that she has chosen to date, with former partner Shameless star Jody Latham pleading guilty in court on Friday to growing 16 cannabis plants.

Tulisa's behaviour has also been a cause for concern, as she left bosses in the lurch when she jetted off to Ibiza for a holiday the week before the start of the X Factor live shows. Her revelations about spending time in gangs as a teenager in her recent book have also worried bosses.

Two weeks ago she was so late that she completely missed seeing her act Ella Henderson rehearsing ahead of the weekend's performance.

Kim And Kourtney Pound The Pavement

Nothing like blowing out your hair and throwing on some makeup for a nice run in Miami...

Kim and Kourtney Kardashian were spotted enjoying a brisk jog yesterday afternoon (Nov. 17), with their camera crew following close behind. Kim, 32, wore a tight black tank-top, spandex and sneakers, while Kourtney, 33, opted for a loose-fitting black shirt with leggings.

Although Kim is somewhat happy with her Kardashian curves, the reality star is tagging along as Kourtney sheds the last of her baby weight.

"I'm hoping to slim down a little bit, and I'm not afraid to say it," Kim recently told Life & Style magazine, adding that she and boyfriend Kanye West like to go out to dinner every now and then. "I think everyone goes up and down in whatever that comfortable love relationship phase is where you like to eat out, but now it's time to get it together again."

Director Weighs In On Big 'Star Wars' Rumor

"The Incredibles" and "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" director Brad Bird took to Twitter to shoot down rumors that he was in talks to helm the new "Star Wars" film. Though he was on many outlets' lists (including ours), Bird will not be directing "Episode VII."

He will, however, watch the film. Bird praised writer Michael Arndt and producer Kathy Kennedy in a follow-up tweet:

Many thought Bird's mix of Pixar magic and live-action success would make him a strong fit for the new "Star Wars" movie. His interest, however, lies in finishing "1952," his project with Damon Lindelof. Others in the race for "Episode VII" director include Steven Spielberg and "300" director Zack Snyder, according to ABC News. J.J. Abrams, another fan favorite, also shot down speculation he was up for the gig. Pressure is high for whoever does take the job, as millions of "Star Wars" fans are unlikely to take a poor sequel quietly.

Here's his original tweet:

So who should direct the movie? Anyone but slide No. 11!

Alison van Diggelen: Meryl Streep Shares Her Green Inspiration

This week, Meryl Streep shared the inspiration for her green activism with Fresh Dialogues and also shared some of her wicked sense of humor in this tribute to green design guru Bill McDonough. The Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute in San Francisco hosted a gala Wednesday in honor of its cofounder, Bill McDonough and I secured an exclusive interview with the inimitable Meryl Streep.

Check out her hilarious speech and find out more about Streep's green credentials at Fresh Dialogues.

The first thing that strikes you about Meryl Streep is her grace and poise. Like a true royal, she glided into the throng of green designers and architects gathered at the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute Gala in San Francisco this week, completely unruffled by the crush of fans; the flash of cameras and smart phones; and the fierce security guards. Yet instantly, like a chameleon, Streep can switch from serene queen of the movies to cozy confidante. I found myself standing next to her and shook her hand. As you know, she's renowned for her authentic accents in every exotic role she's played, so I asked her, "Can you do a good Scottish accent?" She immediately leaned over and whispered in my ear, "I love the way they say murdererrrr!" Rolling those r's as only a lass from Scotland - or Meryl Streep - can do. Then she laughed with that infectious burst of effervescence. Now that would make even The Iron Lady melt a wee bit.

But enough trivia. The best part is, she agreed to a Fresh Dialogues interview and we had a lively conversation about her green design guru and close friend Bill McDonough; and why she's become an activist for the environment.

PHOTOS: Kate Moss' Tattoo Is Worth HOW Much?

We all knew Kate Moss' looks can garner her the big bucks, but it looks like her skin is also a marketable asset.

Not only did the supermodel dish to Vanity Fair about drugs and crying over Johnny Depp, but she also revealed a not-so-widely known tidbit: she's been inked by Lucian Freud. That's right, Kate actually has a lower back tattoo depicting two swallows courtesy of the revered German painter.

A tattooing session isn't such a highly unlikely event though. The 38-year-old Brit befriended the artist in 2002 when she said he was the person she'd most like to meet. Et voila! Freud's fashion designer daughter Bella Freud called Kate and arranged a meeting (oh, to be a world-renowned model...). The two got on so well that he even painted her portrait. As for how the tattoo came about, Kate explains it best:

''He told me about when he was in the navy, when he was 19 or something, and he used to do all of the tattoos for the sailors. And I said, 'Oh my God, that's amazing.' And he went, 'I can do you one. What would you like? Would you like creatures of the animal kingdom?' I mean, it's an original Freud. I wonder how much a collector would pay for that? A few million?"

Freud's painting of Kate alone garnered £3.9 million at auction, but we don't even want to ponder the morbidity of putting a price on her tattoo -- it's still attached to her body, after all. Ms. Moss, on the other hand, has no problem thinking about such things. "If it all goes horribly wrong I could get a skin graft and sell it! It's probably the only one on skin that's still around, because when he was in the navy he was about 19. Can you imagine?"

This isn't the mother's only tattoo though. She has quite a few, ranging from an anchor on her wrist to a heart on her palm to a star on her ankle. But since none of these are Lucian Freud creations, we suspect they aren't as lucrative as her lower back ink. If you can even put a price tag on these sort of things...

Check out Kate's $1 Lucian Freud tattoo below and tell us what you think.

LISTEN: Fiona Apple's Oscar Bid

Fiona Apple's Oscar entry has arrived. "Dull Tool," an original track the singer wrote for Judd Apatow's "This Is 40," made its way online Saturday evening, meaning fans of Apple can hear the song before she belts it out at the Academy Awards (fingers crossed?).

Of course, there's no guarantee the song will win any awards. But Universal is hoping it does -- the studio has listed "Dull Tool" among the items it's pushing for Oscar consideration. And if it does win, Apple would have a chance to best her 1997 MTV Awards speech, in which she famously denounced the cult of celebrity as a "world" of "bulls--t."

Apple is in good musical company in "This Is 40," which includes songs from Paul McCartney, Yoko Ono, Ryan Adams, Norah Jones and many more big name artists.

The film hits theaters Dec. 21. More, from our earlier reporting:

Apple has some experience with film soundtracks, though this is the first time she's added an original composition to a movie. In 1998, Apple covered The Beatles' classic "Across the Universe" for the movie "Pleasantville"; most recently, her song "Paper Bag" received prominent placement in "Bridesmaids."

WATCH: Katt Williams Pleads 'Pimp'

In addition to the real Chris Christie showing up on this Saturday's "Weekend Update," "SNL" cast member Jay Pharoah got to show off his spot-on Katt Williams impression by defending the comedian's latest run-in with police.

After allegedly pulling a gun on a fellow comedian last October, Williams was arrested for fighting in an Oakland, CA club a few days before this weekend's "SNL" broadcast. So naturally, Pharoah, who is known for his arsenal of impressions, had to sit down with Seth Meyers and offer an explanation for the comic's erratic behavior. As it turns out, Katt simply pleads "pimp."

"Look, you see, I am what is known in the industry as a 'crazy, drugged up maniac,'" Pharoah joked before going on to blame the Williams' violent streak on both drugs and being impossibly short.

Ryan Murphy To Honor TV Legend At Emmys

NEW YORK — "Glee" co-creator Ryan Murphy didn't hesitate when given a chance to pay tribute to his American idol, legendary TV producer Norman Lear, at the 40th International Emmy Awards.

Lear's sitcom "All In the Family" – and its spinoffs "Maude" and "The Jeffersons" – mixed humor with an honest examination of the key social issues of the day – racism, sexism, even abortion, rape and homosexuality. Decades later, Murphy is following the path blazed by Lear with his shows, "Glee" and "The New Normal."

Murphy and Lear are to receive honorary awards at Monday night's International Emmy Awards Gala. A total of 38 nominees from 15 countries will compete for awards in nine categories. British television productions received a leading seven nominations, including best actor and actress nods for Jason Isaacs, the villainous Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter films, in the crime mystery "Case Histories" and newcomer Joanna Vanderham in "The Runaway."

"I remember watching his shows when I was young and being moved by them," Murphy said of Lear from his production office in Los Angeles. "The way he tackled social issues so directly and opened a conversation about things no one wanted to talk about was fascinating to me.

"I try to do the same in my work, most recently with the `Obama Mama' episode of `The New Normal,' which was inspired by `All in the Family.'"

In that Sept. 25 episode of his new NBC sitcom, about a gay male couple and the surrogate hired to carry their child, there's a heated discussion at a dinner party over whether to support Barack Obama or Mitt Romney reminiscent of Archie Bunker's debates with his liberal son-in-law Mike, whom he called "Meathead." Ellen Barkin's character Jane Forrest, the surrogate's ultraconservative grandmother, is prone to making racist and homophobic remarks much like the curmudgeonly working-class Bunker.

At Monday night's ceremony, hosted by Regis Philbin at the Hilton New York Hotel, Murphy will be presenting the 40th Anniversary Special Founders Award to Lear, now 90, and "MASH" star Alan Alda. The organizers wanted to mark the milestone anniversary by honoring a producer and performer who had groundbreaking shows on the air in 1972 when the International Emmys were first presented.

"Each of them is an iconic person in the history of the television business ... who were part of that incredible vanguard of a new kind of socially relevant, often in-your-face, television programs that really did change the medium," said Bruce L. Paisner, president and CEO of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, which presents the International Emmys honoring excellence in television programming produced outside the U.S.

"'MASH' very cleverly used the Korean War as a stand in for social commentary on the Vietnam War. ... `All in the Family' – as well as everything that Norman did – was a new approach to addressing social issues on television," said Paisner.

To complete the circle, Jessica Lange, the star of Murphy's gothic contemporary TV series "American Horror Story," will present him with the honorary 2012 International Emmy Founders Award.

"In terms of being at the cutting edge of changes in our society, Ryan Murphy may be the most significant producer in the industry today. He is trying very hard to change the way people think in ways that get people to be more inclusive and tolerant," said Paisner.

"Every once in a while a producer comes along who manages because he's a great storyteller to change the terms of the national discussion for the better. Norman Lear was certainly one and Ryan Murphy is another one," added Paisner, noting the recent election in which voters in three states approved same-sex marriage.

With "Glee," Paisner noted, Murphy also created a novel format mixing music with drama/comedy, which has had an influence abroad. Singapore's "The Kitchen Musical," a music-dance-drama about a young girl fresh out of a Parisian culinary school who goes to work in her father's famous restaurant, received two nominations.

Brazil had five nominations, all for TV Globo productions, while Argentina's four nominations included acting nods for Dario Grandinetti and Cristina Banegas in the miniseries "Television por la Inclusion."

Paisner said the International Emmys have come a long way since 1972 when about 100 people gathered in a New York hotel for a modest ceremony that handed out two International Emmys for fiction and non-fiction programming.

Now, the academy presents International Emmys in 20 categories with separate ceremonies for news and current affairs, digital productions and children's television. More than 1,000 television industry representatives from around the world are expected for Monday's gala.

Monday's ceremony will also honor Kim In-kyu, president and CEO of the Korean Broadcasting System, with the honorary 2012 International Emmy Directorate Award.

Katie Holmes: 'Me In The Kitchen Is A Comedy'

$

She might be getting rave reviews for her role in Broadway's "Dead Accounts," but Katie Holmes kills it in the kitchen ... literally.

The actress, 33, reveals that she's a terrible cook in the December issue of Vogue magazine, in which she talks about her dramatic, and comical, real-life as a newly single mother.

“Like, just me in the kitchen is a comedy,” Holmes tells Vogue, adding, “But it’s heartbreaking for me going through it..."

Her "Dead Accounts" co-star, Norbert Leo Butz, who took part in the interview, laughed at her confession, admitting, “Because you’re such a bad cook?”

“Yes. But for others, they probably think it’s really funny, because all the pans are out, and I get frustrated, and suddenly it’s burning," Holmes, who finalized her divorce from Tom Cruise earlier this year, says.

“And I went to Eataly [Mario Batali's NYC market],” she laughs. “I got the stuff. And it still turned out, like -- not good!”

Holmes, who currently lives in Manhattan with her 6-year-old daughter Suri, is content with life in the Big Apple, and looks forward to starring in more plays on Broadway.

"It's exciting because there's no close-up, so a person has to use every inch of themselves," she tells Vogue of why she loves live theater. "So you're never done -- and who wants to be done? It's just another opportunity to keep growing."

Well Katie, here's hoping you're not-so-tasty cooking skills grow along with your career!

The AMAs Will Be Quite Star-Studded This Year

LOS ANGELES — Along with Rihanna, Nicki Minaj is the top nominee at Sunday's American Music Awards, but the rapper-singer isn't concerned with her four nominations.

"I don't do music for awards," the 29-year-old said in an interview. "It's so crazy because people always have to remind me that I'm nominated for an award when I go to award shows."

"I know they're going to come. I'm sitting here looking at my awards right now," she continued with a laugh. "I never stress it. I think of myself as `I'll have a career long enough to get all those different awards.'"

In the pop/rock category, Minaj is up for favorite female artist and album for "Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded." She's also nominated for favorite artist and album in the hip-hop/rap category, two awards she won last year.

Minaj isn't up for the night's top award, though. Rihanna, Maroon 5, Drake, Katy Perry and Justin Bieber will battle it out for artist of the year.

But the American Music Awards are all about performances, and Sunday's show will be no exception. Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood will perform. Justin Bieber will share the stage with Minaj. Ludacris and Chris Brown will perform with Swizz Beatz. And Stevie Wonder is set to provide the soundtrack for a tribute to the late Dick Clark.

"I'm really going there to perform `Freedom,'" Minaj said of her new single. "I'm very, very proud of the record and I'm happy that people are going to get to hear it. I'm performing a hip-hop song on the AMAs, and I think . that's just a big look for hip-hop."

Kelly Clarkson, Linkin Park, No Doubt, Usher and Carly Rae Jepsen are also among those set to sing during the three-hour program, which is to be broadcast live on ABC.

Other multiple nominees include Usher, Bieber, Drake, Maroon 5 and One Direction, who have three nods each. Perry, Underwood, Brown, Clarkson, Pitbull, fun., Gotye, J. Cole and Luke Bryan are all double nominees.

American Music Awards nominees were selected based on sales and airplay, and fans chose the winners by voting online.

The 40th anniversary show will also include the tribute to Clark, its creator.

"Dick changed the face of music back in the late `50s," producer Larry Klein said. "Dick is the one who made rock `n' roll acceptable to come into people's homes... We're paying tribute to Dick because of the legacy that he's left everybody and also the creativity of what he did on this show."

W Magazine isn't known for fluffy, crowd-pleasing covers. They've turned Jessica Biel into a steamy vixen, Kate Moss into a nun and Tom Cruise into a... well, let's just try to forget that one. Per tradition, their latest cover definitely requires a second glance.

For the December 2012 issue, the high-fashion glossy tapped Marion Cotillard to pose on the cover and in an accompanying editorial entitled "Red Hot." The French actress stuns in an avant garde getup, complete with an architectural red coat, a single red leather glove and one of the tiniest metallic belts we've ever seen. (Also, is that an Amelie-esque hairdo we spy?)

But things aren't exactly what they seem. The Tim Walker-lensed shot features the "Midnight In Paris" star with a few extra hands groping her items of clothing alongside the headline "Hands-On Fashion" -- no doubt a cheeky touch dreamed up by Walker's always-vivid imagination.

So what do you think of W Magazine's latest newsstand eye-catching technique? Check out the photo of the cover in question and tell us if you'll be picking up the mag.

Stop! It's... harem pants time?

The drop-crotch pants were back in a big way last night at the American Music Awards, if performers Justin Bieber, Psy and MC Hammer's attire was any indication. The latter two resurrected the '90s hip-hop star's trademark pants for their brilliant mashup of "Gangnam Style" and "2 Legit 2 Quit." Bieber (who swept up three awards, including Artist of the Year) didn't have an excuse, but donned the baggy-seated pants twice anyway: a black pair on the red carpet with mom Pattie Mallette, and a red leather version onstage as he sang “As Long As You Love Me."

Music's men weren't the only folks to make curious sartorial decisions last night, of course: Christina Aguilera walked onstage without a pair of pants entirely.

What do you make of the pants? Is it time to wave goodbye to this trend forever, or do these strong male figures make it hot again?

Chris Jancelewicz: An Ode To Quentin Tarantino

$
0
0

The first exposure I ever had to the work of Quentin Tarantino was during an impromptu trip to the theatre at the age of 15. Coerced by several older teens, I somehow managed to get into the R-rated movie, not even aware of what I was getting into. Sure, I'd seen commercials for Oliver Stone's Natural Born Killers, but I had no idea what I was about to witness.

Though the finished film bore little resemblance to Quentin Tarantino's original screenplay (which was presented to Stone, and then manicured to his liking), it's undeniable that Natural Born Killers has many Tarantino-esque trademarks: the violence, the swearing, the impeccable dialogue, the memorable characters. I recall staring at the screen, open-mouthed, unable to breathe. The blood! The visual stimuli! In a way, it was my cinematic awakening -- a realization that movies could tell stories on multiple levels. And despite its paranoia and unfiltered rage, underneath it all NBK is a sweet tale of romance in a world gone crazy. That, to me, was pure Tarantino, and from that day forward I knew that no other screenwriter or filmmaker on the planet could ever do what he does.

Just as young students of journalism try to emulate Hunter S. Thompson (and completely fail, every time), so too do young film students try to copy Tarantino. The particular styles of Thompson and Tarantino are so individual and so true (and so damn good), that it would be nearly impossible as an aspiring artist not to want to capture that magic. So there are attempts, even by semi-established filmmakers, to reach that pinnacle. The sad reality is, to put it bluntly, that no one can ever make movies like Tarantino. You can spot his movies a mile away, even from one scene, and you can identify traits from film to film, but no one even comes close to capturing the essence of his work.

So I became a connoisseur of his movies, circling back on Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs (remember, I was young, so I had yet to embrace these two classics), and I was totally enraptured by the weaving of the films' characters, and how taboo items like drugs, sex, swearing and violence intermingled with their daily lives. I'd grown up watching The Goonies, Stand By Me, Major League, and any number of grotesque horror films, so I was aware that there was a dark side to humanity, but it was Tarantino who illustrated that it can happen to you, or me, or to that straight-laced guy down the street. As horrific as certain elements of life are, they're all around us, often right under our noses.

As the years went by and as I grew older, Tarantino kept putting out more movies -- Jackie Brown, Kill Bill Vols. 1 & 2, the Grindhouse double feature -- and I got just as excited for each new release. They're veritable smorgasbords for the film fan, his trademarks present in every offering. His consistently strong female characters (there's no time for pandering to feminine stereotypes here -- it's the women who most often kick ass in his movies, not the men) were, and continue to be, so refreshing in a world of rom-coms and male-dominated action films. Jackie Brown don't take no shit, the various women of Kill Bill absolutely destroy, and in Grindhouse, well, Cherry Darling's leg is a machine gun. I think that says it all.

Throughout the '90s and 2000s, Tarantino was known for his trademarks. The powerful female characters, the intricate and true-to-life dialogue and his amazing choice in music for soundtracks (c'mon, how many of us owned the Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, and Kill Bill soundtracks? I know I did). With 2009's Inglourious Basterds, he was taking a step in a new direction. This wasn't his usual crime/caper/martial arts movie -- this was an entirely different animal. Hell, this was a film about killing Nazis! With an A-list star like Brad Pitt at the helm, naysayers were quick to show their disdain (recall that John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson weren't exactly A-list in the early '90s; in fact, they probably owe a great deal of their ensuing success to Tarantino). These critics were silenced when the movie received rave reviews and multiple Oscar nominations (and a win for virtual unknown Christoph Waltz). Tarantino had successfully melded his post-modern ouevre with pseudo-factual historical events, a rare feat in cinema.

Up next is Django Unchained, set for release on Christmas Day. As with Basterds, Tarantino is taking on another contentious historical issue -- in this case, slavery. Again, he has major A-listers on board for the film, but there seems to be a lot less derision this time around. I have a feeling that filmgoers are going to experience that same exhilaration when slaveowners are killed/punished as when Nazis were exterminated in Basterds. A rush, to be sure, of the kind only Tarantino can provide.

Experience Tarantino all over again with the 'Tarantino XX' blu-ray box set, available on November 20.
