Here's Who Ben Mendelsohn Wants To Play In 'Star Wars' If Those Rumors Are True

$

0
Ben Mendelsohn is having quite the moment, and if those "Star Wars" rumors end up being true, he's bound to become a household name in Hollywood.

The Australian actor has been well-known back home since he was a teenager, but you've likely seen him more and more recently in American films and TV shows. He was killed by Bane in "The Dark Knight Rises," played Jessa's father in HBO's "Girls," and appeared alongside Brad Pitt in "Killing Them Softly."

This year alone, Mendelsohn's credits include Netflix's "Bloodline," Ryan Gosling's directorial debut "Lost River," gambler film "Mississippi Grind " and indie Western "Slow West." Let's also not forget that he might star alongside Felicity Jones in "Star Wars: Rogue One."

In John Maclean's feature film debut, "Slow West," Michael Fassbender (who previously worked with Maclean on two short films), plays Silas, a mysterious traveler headed west in 16th-century Colorado. Silas helps 16-year-old Scottish boy Jay Cavendish (Kodi Smit-McPhee) on his journey to find the girl he loves until they run into Mendelsohn's Payne, a villainous leader of a gang of bounty hunters.

The Huffington Post sat down with Mendelsohn at the Tribeca Film Festival last month to discuss the wardrobe he took home from "Slow West," who he'd like to play in the "Star Wars" universe, and his bizarre dance in "Lost River."

slow west mendelsohn

I loved "Slow West." It’s so beautifully made.
Yeah, [Maclean] did really well, didn’t he? It’s beautifully shot. He’s got something, that guy. And Fassbender found him, or they found each other. So I just got asked on board when it was all in its shape and I have a little turn in it.

You don’t show up in too many scenes, but when Payne is on screen he definitely makes an impression.
This, I like this. And that coat [points to the film poster].

Payne's coat is amazing! Did you get to keep it?
I have that coat. I have it sitting on a mannequin at home. I don’t have memorabilia, but try to take a bit of wardrobe, usually because they dress me better than I dress myself. But that coat, that’s a thing of beauty. I’m very proud of it.

Are you going to wear it around?
Yeah, I suppose I might bust it out in moments of great bravery or just deep cold. I did wear it for the premiere in Sundance.

What was it like working with Fassbender?
Michael had a lot of stuff to do. It was all drunk hoo-ha and boy, he did some incredibly dangerous things around a fire, which aren’t in the [final] cut. There was some falling, some drunken shenanigans near fires and rocks, sh*t that I was going, “Oh, f**k.” But there’s a fearlessness to the way he works that is pretty admirable. And Kodi [Smit-McPhee], there’s such a delicateness to him. When he starts acting, he feels like gossamer. It was a good couple of days.

You’ve been so well-known in Australia, but now you’re finally having a breakthrough in the U.S. What’s that feel like?
It’s cool. It’s been a great several years. I came here for a very, very long time and just couldn’t get any sort of traction going. There were a couple of people who liked me, but it didn’t translate into anything that was employment based. I like to think that what really helped it was the one-two punch of "Animal Kingdom" and either “Place Beyond the Pines” or “Killing Them Softly.” Those combined really seemed to set some wind in the sails. It’s been a dreamy couple of years.

I bet. And now there’s those “Star Wars” rumors ...
Yeah, there are those rumors.

So, are they just rumors?
They -- I can definitively and honestly say to you that I have no job yet that I know of to go to. That may change. I would be very happy if that came to pass, but at this stage it’s just chatter.

Ideally, if you were in it, what character would you want to play?
It would depend. I think that the Empire has such room. We only know of a few people on the Empire side of the fence. “Star Wars” is populated by so many great types, who wouldn’t want to be a Han Solo kind of dude? And then you’ve got the whole Luke strain. I don’t think that they’re likely to -- I’d be thrilled, actually, if they were looking at me for a Skywalkery-type of a number. But yeah, there’s a lot.

You also worked with Gosling again in “Lost River,” where you have singing and dancing scenes. Had you ever done something like that before?
No, I’ve never sung before. That’s me doing my Frankie Laine impersonation. There’s a little film I did where I sing a bit, but nothing like that. And the dance was something we just figured out very last minute just before we were going to shoot the scene. We knew we had it coming up and I went down there and we put on a A$AP Rocky track and just danced off.

That’s even more bizarre because that’s totally different from the song playing in the scene.
That’s right, it’s not [the same]. But if you ever want to hear what it was that I was dancing to, it is “F**king Problems.”

Did you know the song before that?
Yeah, I was familiar with the opus. I’m a reasonably -- I have my phases -- but I really like music.

"Slow West" is now playing in select theaters.

Julianne Hough Was An Extra In 'Harry Potter,' But We Actually Already Knew That

Julianne Hough took part in Us Weekly's "25 Things You Don't Know About Me" feature, in which the magazine asks celebrities to list 25 interesting or random facts about themselves that the public probably doesn't know about them. But Hough's list comes up short, because there's at least one fact we definitely already knew:

11. I was a Gryffindor in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone," but don’t blink or you’ll miss me!

While this isn't news to us, maybe it's news to you. And there really isn't a bad time to revisit a moment in Harry Potter history. Hough's role as a Hogwarts student was blink and you'll miss it, indeed. She can be seen sitting near Hermoine (Emma Watson) and Ron (Rupert Grint) while they cheer on Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) at a Quidditch match.

juliannehoughharrypotter

Hough has actually spoken about her appearance in the beloved 2001 children's movie on more than one occasion.

“Oh, yes. I remember it like it was yesterday. I’m still such a big fan. I always go and watch the midnight showing, so I’m excited to see it," she told Parade magazine in 2011 when asked if the ending of the film series felt bittersweet.

She added, “I might get in trouble for this, but I actually stole the Gryffindor scarf that I had as a memento. I was like, ‘I have to keep this scarf!’”

Then in 2012, during an appearance on "Live With Kelly," Hough brought up the scarf story again and admitted that while filming the movie as an 11-year-old she fell hard for Harry Potter himself.

"I was kind of in love, especially with Daniel Radcliffe. I wrote him a love note. It was Valentine's Day and I got him the Valentino Beanie Baby. I never heard back," she said.

If people weren't aware she had an uncredited role in the first "Harry Potter" movie, well they are now.

After Swift was announced as the winner of the Top Billboard 200 Album for "1989" at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night, she went in for a celebratory hug from Harris and got a rather passionate embrace, as well as a quick kiss:

Mariah Carey took a break from her new Las Vegas residency at The Colosseum to take the stage at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday.

The 45-year-old looked absolutely gorgeous in a glittering gown and sang her 1990 hit, "Vision of Love," before switching over to her new heartbreak ballad, "Infinity," which the singer dropped in late April.

On Wednesday, Carey was forced to cancel her Vegas show, "Mariah #1 to Infinity," due to illness. She explained that she was battling bronchitis in an Instagram post to her fans:

The following evening, the "Vision of Love" singer reassured fans she was on the mend with a photo of herself rehearsing for the Billboard Music Awards:

Wow, wow, wow.

Celine Dion looked amazing as she walked the red carpet at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas on Sunday night. The 47-year-old stunned in a green leather dress, which featured a higher-than-usual thigh-high slit.

Dion later took the stage to present Top Male Artist to Sam Smith, and accepted the award on his behalf, as he's recovering from vocal cord surgery in New York.

Wiz Khalifa And Charlie Puth Perform 'See You Again' At Billboard Music Awards

Things got emotional at the Billboard Music Awards Sunday night.

Wiz Khalifa performed his No. 1 song "See You Again" alongside Charlie Puth and violinist Lindsey Stirling at the award show. The song, which has dominated the Hot 100 Billboard chart for the past five weeks, was featured on the "Furious 7" soundtrack.

Khalifa's song plays in the final moments of the film as a moving tribute to Paul Walker and his character Brian O'Connor. Director James Wan has said that he's cried every time he watched the ending with the song.

Clad in a maroon suit, Puth took to the piano and crooned out the hook to the moving ballad. A passionate Khalifa bounced energetically around the stage in between rapping his verses, while Stirling played the violin in a glittering gold gown.

"Empire" Season 1 may have ended months ago, but its stars, Jussie Smollett (Jamal) and Bryshere “Yazz” Gray (Hakeem), reunited at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday to perform “Conqueror,” featuring Estelle, and “You’re So Beautiful." Taraji P. Henson, who plays Cookie, introduced her co-stars with, "Prepare to celebrate the music of 'Empire!'"

There’s no way I could possibly love music more than I already do,” Smollett told Billboard before the show. “The Billboard Music Awards has been the epitome of celebrating some of the best of the best in music. To be included as a performer on this year’s celebration is a huge honor.”

"I'm still living in a dream -- the success of Empire and now getting the honor to perform at the Billboard Music Awards. It's truly a blessing," Yazz told Billboard.

Ultimate girl crush Faith Hill took to the stage with Little Big Town to perform their hit song "Girl Crush" at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday.

The group belted out the tune together before Hill joined them on stage to bring it home. (Taylor Swift was clearly a fan of the performance.)

Initially, "Girl Crush" wasn't getting a lot of support from country radio because of its presumed "lesbian theme," but since that controversy was thrown out the window, the track is currently No. 1 on both the Hot Country Songs and the Country Digital Songs charts, and landed at No. 25 on the Hot 100.

Simple Minds Celebrates The 30th Anniversary Of 'The Breakfast Club' At Billboard Music Awards

Thirty years ago, while cooped up in Saturday morning detention, a group of teens learned that people categorize one another in certain ways, and discovered that each one of them is a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess and a criminal.

Earlier this year "The Breakfast Club" celebrated its 30th anniversary and at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night, the film's star Molly Ringwald introduced the band Simple Minds to perform their 1985 hit song "Don't You (Forget About Me)," which plays in both the opening credits and final scene of the movie.

The band got the crowd singing along to the 80s hit and it looked like Ringwald, who joked about wanting to be in Taylor Swift's club, got her wish:

They're just so pretty!

Britney Spears and Iggy Azalea took to the stage at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday for the live debut of their new collaboration, "Pretty Girls." With a small army of backup dancers behind her, Spears danced around stage in a black catsuit complete with cut-outs, and Azalea delivered her cheeky rap verse clad in a silver crop top and matching miniskirt.

Azalea, 24, is nominated for 12 Billboard awards this year, including Top New Artist, Top Female Artist and Top Rap Artist.

The pop princess and the Australian rapper released the colorful, '80s-themed video for the track last week.

Earlier this month, Spears spoke to New York radio station z100 about the concept behind "Pretty Girls."

"I wanted to do a girl anthem. Something that was very girl empowering and that was kinda funny. I thought a whole take on valley girls and just kind of making fun of that would be fun for us to do," she said.

Everyone looked like they were in need of a tissue on Sunday night after Imagine Dragons' tribute to the late Ben E. King at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

It was a hometown show for the band, who definitely managed to get tears flowing with their cover of Kings' "Stand By Me," despite the song's promise not to shed a tear.

King died on April 30 at the age of 76 and the band had previously covered his 1961 hit during a visit to SiriusXM Studios in February.

If there is one thing we know to be true, it's that Kelly Clarkson can sing. And she did just that at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night in Las Vegas.

The 33-year-old pop star performed "Invincible" off her latest album "Piece by Piece," which she released in February. The uptempo track, written by Sia, showcases Clarkson's powerful vocals, and is her second single off the album.

It's good to see Clarkson return to the stage after she spent most of the 2015 Grammy awards live-tweeting the show from her couch.

After a brief introduction by Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Kanye West performed at the Billboard Music Awards for the first time on Sunday. Barely visable behind a crazy amount of pyrotechnics, the 37-year-old rapped a heavily censored version of his song, "All Day," before launching into an impassioned performance of "Black Skinhead." It was intense, in true Kanye West fashion.

His set was part of the build-up to his forthcoming album, "Swish." The album doesn't yet have a release date, but West has already debuted singles from it, including "FourFiveSeconds," "All Day" and "Only One."

Iggy Azalea Wins Top Rap Artist At The Billboard Music Awards

Iggy Azalea is officially the No. 1 rapper, at least according to the Billboard Music Awards.

The "Fancy" hit maker won the award for Top Rap Artist on Sunday night, but you probably didn't know that since her win wasn't televised during the awards show. Azalea bested 2013 winner Nicki Minaj, as well as Drake, J. Cole and Rae Sremmurd. Some may be left pondering one question, though: I-G-G-WHY?

Azalea's win shouldn't be much of a surprise, since she made Billboard history last year as the female rapper with the longest run on the Hot 100 chart. The rapper's hit "Fancy" with Charlie XCX spent seven consecutive weeks at No. 1 and was named Billboard's Song of the Summer last year.

In addition to "Fancy," Azalea's "Problem" featuring Ariana Grande became the rapper's second biggest single in the U.S. and remained in the top 10 of the Hot 100 for sixteen weeks. When "Problem" peaked at the No. 2 spot, Azalea made even more history, matching with The Beatles as the second act ever to appear in the top two spots of the Hot 100 with their first two Billboard Hot 100 hits in the U.S. The rapper was also only the third woman to have the top two spots on the chart, alongside Mariah Carey and Ashanti.

This is Azalea's third Billboard Music Award. She also won Top Rap Song for "Fancy" and Top Streaming Artist. Azalea was also nominated for Top New Artist, Top Female Artist, Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Digital Songs Artist, Top Rap Album for "The New Classic," Top Hot 100 Song for "Fancy," Top Streaming Song (Audio) for "Fancy," the fan-voted Billboard Chart Achievement Award, and again in the Top Rap Song category for "Black Widow."

Azalea also performed alongside Britney Spears at the award show, belting out their new single "Pretty Girls."

Sam Smith was named top male artist at the Billboard Music Awards Sunday night, but the singer wasn’t able to attend the ceremony to receive his award in person. Instead, the four-time Grammy winner accepted the honor with an adorable “Love Actually”-inspired video.

Smith is recovering from vocal surgery. Unable to speak, he filmed himself delivering his acceptance speech with the help of a few cue cards.

In his speech, the “Lay Me Down” crooner thanked his fans for their support.

Salma Hayek On The Simple First Step Toward Ending Hollywood's Woman Problem

Salma Hayek has some awesome ideas about how to break down Hollywood sexism.

In a May 17 interview for The Hollywood Reporter's Women In Motion talks, Salma Hayek and co-speaker Matthias Schoenaerts discussed sexism in Hollywood, and the many different ways women are chipping away at it.

The Hollywood Reporter's Janice Minn kicked off the discussion by asking how Hollywood can get men involved in creating more spaces for women in the film industry.

Hayek had one suggestion: “There’s a very simple answer and really a very simple solution," she said. "You get [men] involved the same way that you get men involved in anything and the only way you can inspire them: money.”

The 48-year-old actress told the story of when she was trying to get "Ugly Betty" on air and everyone rejected her pitch. As the executive producer of the TV show, Hayek realized the only way to get the show on-air was to "try to prove our power as a consumer."

"I was trying to do a telenovela where the leading role was a girl that was not pretty... that had a new visual proposition," Hayek said. Knowing the networks were underestimating the value of a one-hour comedy about a Latina woman, Hayek pointed advertisers and producers to statistics on how large the Latino population is in the U.S. -- and their proportion of television audiences. "Ugly Betty" was on the air in no time.

“Every time you try to bring something new, they run for their lives," Hayek said. "But once they saw the money, we got on the air immediately!”

The actress also described how demonstrating the power of female consumers can be an effective approach to promoting equality, telling Minn, "We look at the statistics as victims… We have to come in a position of power. It’s not like, ‘Oh you haven’t noticed us!’ No, it’s like, ‘You don’t know what you’re missing.’ And when they know that what they’re missing is money, they’ll jump in that boat at speed light.”

“They are forgetting that there is this X generation of smart women that have a huge power of economical power," she said. "We are successful, we work, we make our own money and we are a very strong consumer.”

Hayek pointed out another sexist dilemma many women have to deal with on set: that leading actors often have a say in who gets cast in the leading female role. “Already they don’t pay us the same!” she said. “It should be the director’s choice, not the actor’s choice. The fact that he has a say who he gets to kiss or not -- I find that very sexist." Preach.

Schoenaerts weighed in later, telling Minn that stories about women have great potential to inspire and also -- to make money. "Within the industry we don’t seem to see [the value of women] and we don’t seem to translate it onto the stories we tell, he said. "And there’s an enormous beauty and depth to what the female represents and what she embodies in all her dimensions. I think there’s an enormous potential for beautiful stories that eventually might make money."

Jaden Smith enthusiasts will remember that he also wore a Batman costume to the Kimye wedding last year, so this year's prom was pretty on #brand.

Jennifer Lopez didn't seem super enthralled by Mariah Carey's performance at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night.

A video clip caught the "Booty" singer texting and scrolling through her phone while Carey sang "Infinity," which TMZ is interpreting as a "diss."

Lopez has denied that there is any feud between her and Carey and has insisted that she's a fan of the singer. And while that might be true, Sunday night, she just seemed to be a bigger fan of her phone. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
