Author Ann Rule Was Abused, Ripped Off By Her Sons, Cops Say

Bestselling true crime author Ann Rule was bilked out of more than $100,000 by two of her sons, one of whom demanded money while she "cowered in her wheelchair," authorities said.

Michael Rule, 51, has been charged with theft in the first degree and forgery, for allegedly writing himself $103,628 in checks from his mother's bank account, according to charging documents. Andrew Rule, 54, was accused of coercing his mother into giving him $23,327 and was charged with first-degree theft. Both are free on their own recognizance awaiting trial.

Ann Rule, 84, the author of 30 New York Times bestsellers, has been in declining health since an October 2013 fall that resulted in a broken hip, according to court documents provided to The Huffington Post by the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office in Washington state. She "is on oxygen at all times," suffers from periods of "extreme confusion" and is "vulnerable to undue influence," the documents say.

"She is unable to perform many activities of daily living without assistance," the court documents state.

Her sons began taking advantage of her weakness last year, according to prosecutors.

Authorities were alerted on March 2, when Rule's son-in-law, Glen Scorr, told the prosecutor's office he suspected his mother-in-law was being financially exploited by her two sons.

A joint investigation by the King County Sheriff's Office and the Normandy Park Police Department revealed that four of Ann Rule's children receive an estimated $25,000 monthly salary through her corporation, Rule Enterprises LLC, for "assigned responsibilities."

Michael Rule, who lives on a property adjoining his mother's Normandy Park home, allegedly pressured her into providing him with funds above his monthly salary. He forged her signature on checks from March 2014 to February 2015, authorities said.

Michael Rule's pressure on his mother included verbal abuse, authorities said. He would "yell at his mother demanding money as she cowered in her wheelchair," the court documents allege. Once, he became so angry that he "screamed at her and threw a cellphone across the room, smashing it to pieces," according to the documents.

Police said Ann Rule told investigators that "Mike often goes into rages, where he throws things across the room and sweeps a counter clean with his arm." One of Ann Rule's caregivers quit because she was "afraid of Mike and his volatile temper," the documents say.

Andrew Rule also was aggressive in his pursuit of his mother's money during 2014, authorities said.

"Andy would pester and bully Ann relentlessly for money, sometimes threatening suicide, sometimes trying to make her feel guilty, sometimes screaming obscenities at her, until she would finally give in and write him a check," the court documents allege.

Ann Rule was granted a protection order against Andrew Rule in January. He was arrested and charged with violating the order on March 27, police said.

While in police custody, Andrew Rule told officers he "has battled drug and gambling addictions for years and that he used the money provided to him by his mother on gambling and strip clubs," the court documents state.

Ann Rule declined to comment on the allegations against her children. Her books include The Stranger Beside Me, about the serial killer Ted Bundy.

Neither Michael Rule nor Andrew Rule were available for comment on Tuesday. During an interview with KIRO-TV of Seattle, Andrew Rule denied wrongdoing.

"I have never in my life, as God as my witness, stolen anything whatsoever from my mom," he told the station. "Basically I used to have a gambling problem but I don’t anymore and I have absolutely no idea why I was pulled in at the same time my brother was," Rule continued.

Dan Donohoe, a spokesman for the prosecutor's office, told HuffPost the brothers are scheduled to be arraigned on April 30.

'Inside Amy Schumer' Says Eff You To Hollywood's View On Aging In An Amazing Sketch

$

The year of Amy Schumer continues with a near-perfect sketch from the Season 3 premiere of "Inside Amy Schumer." Yes, there was a tribute to butts and a rape sketch, but a sketch saying "screw you" to the Hollywood patriarchy featured cameos from legends Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Tina Fey and Patricia Arquette, and it was an absolute winner.

Schumer stumbles upon the trio having an idyllic picnic in the woods, only to discover they're celebrating Louis-Dreyfus' "Last Fuckable Day." She explains: "In every actress' life, the media decides when you finally reach the point when you're not believably fuckable anymore." Common signs are when the poster for your movie is just a photo of the kitchen, wardrobe only has long sweaters for you and when your movies are remade with younger actresses (Selena Gomez in "Boyhood"!).

They celebrate well, though, by chugging ice cream, smoking cigars and delivering an expert critique on the way Hollywood treats actresses as they age. Bravo, Schumer.

Meryl Streep's Awesome Move To Fight Ageism In Hollywood

This week, the ever-cool Meryl Streep revealed she would help fund a screenwriting lab specifically for women over 40.

The lab will be overseen by New York Women in Film and Television, which Streep is an honorary board member of, and have the support of female celebrity mentors.

Streep herself knows the struggles of aging women in Hollywood. In 2011, she told Vogue Magazine that once she turned 40 she got offered three roles -- all to play witches. "Once women passed childbearing age they could only be seen as grotesque on some level," Streep said.

Applications for the lab will be available starting May 1 and the deadline is June 1, for the three-day intensive seminar in September. More details on how to apply can be found here.

Dear Kelly Clarkson, Thanks for Standing Up for Girls Like Me

Dear Kelly,

I've read you've been getting a lot of crap because of your weight. I know how awful it feels to be judged simply because you are not a size 4. But you are 100 percent right with your response when you say, "Screw 'em!"

When people think that your size is bigger than your talent, screw 'em. When people talk about your clothes instead of your songs, screw 'em. When people tweet negative crap about you instead of sharing your awesome, screw 'em.

Share your joy! Share your amazing music. Share your talent, your beautiful daughter and your spirit. Share your ability to show those bullies that the only thing their comments are dragging down is themselves.

I have a lot of experience in being bullied because of my weight. I let them get into my head, and it really messed me up, nearly to the point of no return. But like you, I finally realized that I am so much more than a size. I realized my size didn't make me less than worthy, and the gifts I had to offer to the world. Just by being me, I was enough. And not one of them had a thing to do with my size, except for the size of my heart. Like you, I wrote about these things that nearly broke me, and how it made me stronger. I wrote my song, "Brave" to show that you can get past that place where it seems like nothing will be ok. I sing it to all those who might need some courage, and tell them to how to Be Brave. Just like you tell others that you are invincible.

Now I am a warrior, a shooting star
Know I got this far, had a broken heart
No one hears the silent tears collecting
Cause it's being weak, but strong in the truth I found
I have courage now, gonna shout it out
Teacher, I feel the dots connecting

I love these lyrics because you are so right -- being weak, but strong in truth is a hard but important lesson. Kelly, you have so much talent, love and happiness in your life, and you are sharing that, instead of the negativity of others. You are an inspiration.

Keep singing loud and clear your message about strength, hope and love. You're saying, "Screw 'em" is validation to every girl in the world that who they are is more important than what size they wear!

In the video above, Michelle Knight responds to a scene from the new Lifetime TV movie depicting her harrowing ordeal, in which, after being freed from the Cleveland house where Ariel Castro held her prisoner and raped and abused her for more than 10 years, she comes to terms with her mom's reaction to her disappearance.

"I feel, like, sad but OK, because I know that my mom didn't care, and I'm alright with that," she tells Dr. Phil.

Actress Taryn Manning (Orange Is The New Black), who portrays Michelle in the movie, says she can relate to Michelle. "My father committed suicide when I was 14," says Taryn. "I've come through that like her." The two women became friends while filming the movie, and Taryn says Michelle's life story has had a profound impact on her. "Michelle is more than just a victim. She's a survivor," Taryn affirms. "I adore her. She changed my life."

Vanessa Hudgens Sounds Off On Being A Gay Rights Advocate: 'Love Comes First For Me'

$

Explaining why she's an advocate for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, "High School Musical" veteran Vanessa Hudgens says she "doesn't see people as gay or straight."

"People can be very close-minded and I think it's not right. I don't think it's fair," the 26-year-old singer-actress, who is currently starring in the Broadway revival of "Gigi," tells GLAAD's Claire Pires in an April 22 interview. "I think it's important for us to stand up for people and to have each other's back, and to be involved with the gay community and support the community."

She went on to note, "I'm a very open person. Love comes first for me."

The star's latest role on the New York stage seems to fit in with that aforementioned motto, too. In the musical, Hudgens plays Gigi, a young courtesan-in-training in turn-of-the-century Paris who wins the heart of a dashing playboy (Corey Cott).

The character, Hudgens says, is "a strong, independent, powerful, young woman" and "a nice lovely little reminder of how you are in control of your future and your happiness no matter what anyone else might think."

Hudgens previously discussed the gay appeal of her work in a 2011 interview with The Advocate. In addition to "High School Musical," which had a large LGBT fanbase, Hudgens worked with openly gay director Daniel Barnz on "Beastly." She also played Mimi in a 2010 staging of "Rent," helmed by Neil Patrick Harris, in Los Angeles.

That doesn't mean, however, that the sexuality of her directors or co-stars had any impact on her enthusiasm for a given film or stage role.

"When it comes to the projects I choose, I just go with my gut instinct, and hopefully people will enjoy the ride I take them on," she said at the time.

Robin Wright's House of Cards Style: A How-To Guide From Her Stylist

$

0
I am drawn to powerful women who prefer pearls to diamonds, dresses to pants and pencil skirts to mini skirts. Some of these women are real, such as Jackie Kennedy or my godmother Dominique. And some are fictional, such as Catherine Banning or Claire Underwood, who is my latest fashion obsession.

2015-04-21-1429641059-2928826-hoc_ps3_039_h.jpg

For the third season of this hit Netflix show, Robin Wright asked her personal stylist Kemal Harris to style Claire Underwood. Thus, Harris enters the picture and takes over Claire's wardrobe from Tom Broecker, who was costume designer for Season 1, and Johanna Argan who styled all characters during Season 2 and continues to style the rest of the cast in Season 3.

An evolution of Claire's style makes sense at this juncture in the story. In Season 3, Claire is in a very different headspace. During the first two seasons, she was working hard, always fighting to get to the top. Her wardrobe reflected that -- mostly black, very structured pieces, Claire was always ready for battle.

2015-04-21-1429642310-9389072-hoc_bs3_021_h.jpg

Courtesy of Netflix

In Season 3, she is at the top of the ladder -- she is in the White House. Her style illustrates this slight break in her struggle: Everything is a bit softer, a bit more feminine. Instead of her usual black armor, Claire is wearing softer colors, softer fabrics and fuller skirts. Thanks to Kemal Harris, costume designer and red carpet stylist.

Now represented by The Wall Group, Harris is from Vancouver BC. She studied fashion design there, and from the start was interested in the styling aspect of fashion. Working with photographers, she eventually made her way to New York City and Robin Wright became her client. Harris styled her for the red carpet and other events. "The red carpet is very competitive, you can't wear anything that has been worn before, the focus is on trying to get exclusive looks from designers that are right off the runway" she says. Dressing a fictional character is very different. "There is so much more to consider than if anyone ever worn this dress before... the story arc, the setting, the lighting, the time of day" Harris explains.

What if you wanted to move from fiction to reality? What are the fashion lessons we can learn from Claire Underwood in Season 3?

1. Claire's clothes fit her perfectly. Indeed, it is all about fit. Harris had a mannequin built to Wright's exact measurements so as to be able to tailor outfits to her exactly, without her having to be there for all the fittings. Harris explains: "We tailor almost every piece to her fit; not everyone can afford to do that of course, but having a great tailor makes all of the difference." Buy one less pair of shoes and instead have your pants and dresses tailored.

2. Claire is not much of a pants girl. Pencil skirts. Full skirts. Fitted dresses. More feminine, and somehow more powerful.

3. Claire is even less of a prints girl. She prefers solid colors. Harris laughs: "We did one striped blouse in Season 3. That is as far as we went. Anything beyond that is too flamboyant for Claire's character. She is so classic."

4. Claire's idea of color remains muted. Deep burgundy, hunter green, violet, light gray, oatmeal. Otherwise, her color palette is black, white and charcoal.

5. Claire is not into jewelry or accessories. If she has to choose, she chooses pearls over diamonds. A single strand of pearls as a necklace, sometimes a single strand bracelet. And of course, her Cartier watch. That has been her trademark from the start. Harris adds "the Cartier team is such a delight to work with, they let me look through their archives for inspiration."

6. Claire does not own a pair of jeans, or sweatpants. Her version of casual are pants with cuffs (when she does wear pants), and a cashmere sweater. Or a pair of black silk pajamas.

7. Claire's preferred sleeve length is three quarters. So much so that Harris often has to alter the sleeve length of the outfits to fit this rule. And oh how powerful does this look with long black leather gloves?

8. Claire only wears stilettos -- Manolos and Louboutins, specifically. You will not see her in a wedge or flats. Unless she is running of course.

9. Claire loves a statement purse. YSL Sac du Jour is her go-to, although an Hermes Kelly bag does make its appearance. As does a Ralph Lauren beaded clutch.

10. Claire likes contemporary designers. In addition to classics such as Ralph Lauren, Armani, and Burberry, she wears up and comers such as Altuzarra, Jason Wu, Derek Lam.

I ask Harris to describe Claire's style in three words: "Timeless. Decisive. Feminine."

Timeless requires no explanation.

Decisive because every look is a complete statement. There's no flip-flopping on the style direction, there is an underlying strength in the cut and fit. The message is that of a powerful woman. Nothing is superfluous, nothing is fussy. She makes bold choices like the Ralph Lauren gown for the State Dinner based on her poise and confidence.

And feminine: Not the first word that jumps to my mind when I think about Claire, yet so very accurate. Feminine, not in a "mini skirt" kind of way. More in a "my clothes fit so well you can't help but see my figure" kind of way. No one would ever mistake Claire for a man...

Robert Downey Jr. Walks Out Of Interview After Being Asked About 'Dark Periods'

Robert Downey Jr. is not down to talk about his past while promoting "Avengers: Age of Ultron." During an interview with Channel 4, Krishnan Guru-Murthy asked him about his "dark periods," bringing up his relationship with his father and past drug use. It did not go over well.

"The reason I'm asking you about the past is that you've talked in other interviews about your relationship with your father and the role of all of that in the dark periods you've been to, taking drugs and drinking and all of that," Guru-Murthy said. "I'm wondering if you're free of all of that or if that's something you..."

Downey Jr. then cut him off and said, "I'm sorry, what are we doing?" A moment later, he stood up, said goodbye and left, saying, "It's getting a little Diane Sawyer in here." Watch it all go down in the last 90 seconds of the video below.

Celebrities Attending The White House Correspondents' Dinner Can't Name A Single White House Correspondent

The annual White House Correspondents' Dinner, held this weekend in Washington, D.C., is a glitzy event where the journalists who cover the president get to rub elbows with Hollywood’s glitterati. The president also attends and speaks, which has led some media critics to call foul on the spectacle of prominent journalists being so chummy with their sources.

Over the years, the White House Corespondents' Dinner has turned into something of a red carpet event, meaning that the type of journalist who spends her time poring over documents in a dark basement has been increasingly crowded out by the likes of Kim Kardashian.

Accordingly, a particular teaser clip from Vanity Fair for the documentary "Nerd Prom" proves to be absolutely delicious. In the clip, former Politico reporter Patrick Gavin decides to ask some of the celebrities attending the dinner to name a single White House correspondent. And, of course, no one can.

Michiel Huisman Slams A Popular 'Games Of Thrones' Theory

All theories must die.

During an AOL Build interview, "Game of Thrones" actor Michiel Huisman was asked about one popular theory regarding his character, Daario Naharis. The theory goes that Daario is actually Ned Stark's brother in disguise.

Remember Benjen Stark? In the show, he accompanied Jon Snow to the Wall and then disappeared on a ranging mission. There's a variety of theories as to what happened, but one of the most popular indicates that he made his way down to Daenerys Targaryen in order to help her reach the Iron Throne.

Unlike the show, as one Redditor explains, Daario's book description makes it seem like he could be in disguise. He has blue hair, he obviously wouldn't be recognized by Dany and he doesn't necessarily act like a typical sellsword, offering his loyalty to Daenerys.

Though there's evidence for it, Daario isn't buying it. "What are those people smoking, seriously?" the actor said.

See his full response in the video above.

Lake Bell Talks Style: The Red Carpet Is Both A Business And 'The Opportunity For A Fashion Moment'

Lake Bell has become something of a fashion icon, emerging with one of the coolest wedding dresses of all time and always turning up at premieres, runways and parties looking like the very picture of Brooklyn cool.

The "Childrens Hospital" star doesn't take full credit for her look -- "I outsource that sort of creativity to a woman named Danielle Nachmani," a stylist, she said -- but the actress doesn't have to look far for fashion influence.

"My mom's really stylish. My grandma is really stylish," she told HuffPost Live's Ricky Camilleri in a Wednesday conversation. "So I'd probably ask them [for help] if I didn't have Danielle."

But Bell makes no secret that all that glossiness takes effort -- and it isn't always pretty.

"I used to really enjoy [it]," she said. "[But] red carpets are ostensibly work. It's not like I go there to have fun."

In the spirit of taking advantage of "the opportunity for a fashion moment," the "How To Make It In America" star knows how to suck it up and play the part.

"There have been times where you do the red carpet in a certain shoe, and you go into the bathroom, you take that shoe off, you put the other shoe on from your purse and then you walk around for the rest of the night," she said. "[Just] so you understand the business angle of it."

It may be time to actually sign up for Tidal.

The long-rumored Beyoncé and Jay Z joint album will reportedly be released exclusively on Tidal, according to DJ Skee. The host of Skee TV revealed last September that the couple was working on an album together. In his latest segment on Skee TV, the DJ reports that sources have told him the album is "nearing completion."

Although Bey and Jay have yet to officially confirm the rumors, producer Detail confirmed the album to Billboard in February. "When you think of Jay and Bey together, you think 'album.' You should already know," Detail told Billboard, before adding that he hopes the album will come out this year.

Earlier this month, both Bey and Jay released exclusives on Tidal, including a music video for her new song "Die with You," and a video for Jay Z's "Glory."

Reps for Beyoncé, Jay Z and Tidal were not immediately available for comment.

Lindsey Vonn May Be Dating Tiger Woods, But She's Just Not That Into Golf

Lindsey Vonn may be dating Tiger Woods, but don't go calling her a golf fan.

The Olympic skier stopped by "Late Night With Seth Meyers" on Tuesday night and gave a very unconvincing reply when pressed about her appreciation for Woods' profession.

"Do you like watching golf?" Meyers asked Vonn, who's been dating the golfer for two years. "Is that something you did before [dating Tiger Woods?]”

“I love golf," Vonn said after an elongated pause.

Sensing the sarcasm, Meyers continued his interrogation: “It seems very different, as an adrenaline junkie, it seems very different.”

“I just…I love golf,” Vonn said, before doing the math on how long a day on the green with Woods can last. "That's like, five hours."

The 30-year-old Olympian has been a frequent presence at Woods' tournaments since they began dating in March 2013, a few months after her divorce from Thomas Vonn was finalized. Earlier this month, she brought Woods' two kiddos with his ex Elin Nordegren to visit as he prepared for the Masters in Augusta, Ga.

Woods, 39, is equally supportive. In January, he cheered Vonn on in Italy as she won her record 63rd World Cup race, even though he was visibly missing a front tooth. (The golfer's agent said he'd been smacked by a cameraman during the award ceremony.)

Way to be a good sport, Tiger.

Chvrches Singer Lauren Mayberry Calls Out Rape Threats

$

Back in 2013, Chvrches singer Lauren Mayberry wrote a column for The Guardian proclaiming, "I will not accept online misogyny," and on Wednesday, she stood by that statement and posted a rape threat, which appeared in a comment on Instagram. "These people never learn that violence against women is unacceptable," she wrote in her caption. "But they also never learn that women will not be shamed and silenced and made to disappear. I am not going anywhere. So bring it on, motherfuckers. Let's see who blinks first."

She's posted screengrabs like this before, bringing attention to the hate and sexism directed at her on a regular basis. "Is the casual objectification of women so commonplace that we should all just suck it up, roll over and accept defeat?" she wrote back in 2013. "I hope not. Objectification, whatever its form, is not something anyone should have to 'just deal with.'"

At the time, she wrote that she hoped her editorial would encourage others to speak out. "My hopes are that if anything good comes out of this, it will start a conversation, or continue the conversation which is already happening, encouraging others to reject an acceptance of the status quo," she wrote. By continuing to call out the misogyny she faces, she's certainly doing so.

Rapper Scarface Emotionally Weighs In On Police Brutality: 'I Feel Like We're Being Hunted'

Rapper Brad "Scarface" Jordan, most famous for his work with the Houston rap group Geto Boys, is fed up with the state of police brutality in America. In a Wednesday interview with HuffPost Live host Marc Lamont Hill, he gave a passionate response to the prevalence of unarmed black citizens who have been killed at the hands of police officers.

"I feel like we're being hunted, you know? And yeah, I'm not cool with it. It's like the society believes what the officers say, and he's got way more of a reason to lie than we do, than I do," he said. "You killed [a] man. And he don't even get a day in court. Well, not that the judicial system is set up for us to benefit from in any fucking way. You dead on both sides, man. You are."

Jordan also countered the idea that black people willingly engage with police officers in dangerous situations.

"We see the fucking police and go the other goddamn way, Marc. And you know it. ... And watch [the police officer] get off," he said.

Jordan also had words for the bystanders of all racial backgrounds who stay quiet about police brutality.

"If these people ... don't see that it's an injustice in the system when it comes to dealing with the minority, then we're going to continue to have this fucking problem," he said. "If you see it's fucked up, say it's fucked up. If you see it's fucked up, you've got to say it. I don't give a fuck if you're white, black, green or brown. You've got to say it."
