Hilary Duff's Ex Mike Comrie Files For Joint Custody

0
0
Hilary Duff's ex has asked for joint custody of their son in response to the actress' divorce filing.

In February, Duff officially filed for divorce from Mike Comrie after a year-long separation. On April 16, Comrie filed his divorce response in a Los Angeles Superior Court, asking for joint custody of their 3-year-old son Luca, according to documents obtained by E! News. Apparently, the actress asked for primary custody in her initial filing.

The filing also stated "spousal support shall be determined pursuant to the terms of the parties' Prenuptial Agreement."

The couple dated for about three years before marrying in 2010. Earlier this month, Duff told People magazine they will be "a unit for the rest of our lives" because of their son.

In Cosmopolitan's April issue, the "Younger" star said she and Comrie were very much in love when they met and wanted to get married, but eventually they weren't "the match we used to be."

"I don't want to sound bitter because I'm definitely not, but I don't know if people are meant to be together forever," she told the magazine. "Things happen over a long relationship that you can't always fight. A marriage of 20 years, the accomplishment of that must feel really great, but there are also huge sacrifices. I just always want to fight for happiness."

A rep for Duff was not immediately available for comment.

'Mila Kunis Stole My Chicken': Alleged Childhood Friend

Mila Kunis has gone from being a "Black Swan" to an accused chicken thief.

Kristina Karo, a singer from Ukraine who claims she was a childhood friend of the actress is alleging that Kunis stole her beloved pet chicken, named "Doggie," back when they were first-graders 25 years ago.

Karo has filed a small claims suit in Los Angeles, asking Kunis for $5,000 for the emotional distress the actress allegedly caused by stealing the chicken, TMZ reports.

"[Doggie] was very smart and unique," Karo told TMZ Live, and repeatedly mixing up the gender of the alleged pet chicken. "She would bring ball back. Call him, he came. All these things you wouldn't think a chicken would know how to do." When asked about the gender, she said it "was not something she could go into."

Karo said "Doggie" went missing one day and claims Kunis confessed to the crime, saying the actress told her, "Kristina, you can have any other chicken as a pet, you have a whole chicken farm."

Karo apparently got over Doggie's disappearance. That is, until she moved to Los Angeles a few years back to attempt a singing career.

"I saw [Kunis] and these memories came rushing in," she told TMZ Live. "I wish to know if [Doggie's] alive or in chicken heaven."

Kunis hasn't actually been served with the lawsuit, but she and boyfriend Ashton Kutcher think Karo's allegations are "clucked up."

WATCH: Kunis Addresses 'Chick-Mil-A' Scandal

The couple released a video to TMZ addressing the "Chick-Mil-A" scandal, where Kunis declares herself a "chicken advocate," who "would never steal someone else's chicken."

Kutcher said he doesn't trust Karo's timeline because he says the singer has claimed to be much younger than Kunis, 31.

Karo's publicist, Zack Teperman, insists his client is the same age as Kunis, but says she has sarcastically claimed to be 19 in previous interviews.

Kunis suggests Karo may have made up the alleged chicken theft since the alleged lawsuit comes at a time when Karo is trying to promote a new song, "Give Me Green Card."

“I would like to launch a counter $5,000 lawsuit for making me watch your video shamelessly," she said in the video. "My body hurts. My eyes hurt. They’re burning. That requires money.”

Lena Dunham Writes Essay In Seventeen On Daring To Be 'Different' And Ignoring Criticism

0

Lena Dunham knows she was a "weirdo" and is proud of it. The "Girls" creator, writer, producer and star penned an essay in the May issue of Seventeen magazine about defying normalcy in high school and how she's since embraced being different.

Dunham opens her essay admitting she was a "bona fide weirdo in high school" who wore yellow clogs and brought bagels to parties, which is far from surprising for anyone who watches HBO's "Girls." Dunham writes that one day she experimented by dressing more "normal" and wearing makeup. She recounts that a "hot boy" lent her a pencil in class that day. "'Wow,' his friend whispered," Dunham writes. "'She actually looks regular.'"

But then Dunham realized what she didn't want to be, writing, "Who wants to be regular, especially if it means taking an extra 15 minutes on your hair? [...] If regular means pretending you don't have passions and style, count me out." Dunham goes on to encourage her readers to embrace being different and to not let negative criticism affect them.

Let's not forget that the writer has long been the target of criticism, for everything from her nudity on "Girls" to her sketches on "SNL" to her personal tweets. While deleting Twitter from her phone earlier this year was one response, Dunham writes in Seventeen to just "ignore" the criticism that's not constructive. "You don't need anyone telling you what your style, substance, or happiness should look like."

For the full essay, head over to Seventeen.com. The May issue is available on newsstands now.

Elizabeth Olsen looks all grown up in the latest issue of Net-a-Porter's digital magazine, The Edit.

The 26-year-old actress might just be the most stylish Olsen sister, wearing dresses by Etro and Emilio Pucci, necklaces by Isabel Marant and sandals by Valentino in the spread. Not only are there amazing fashion moments inside the magazine, but readers get a feel for the starlet's personality in her candid interview.

Olsen discussed her famous sisters Mary-Kate and Ashley, raiding the showroom of their fashion label Elizabeth and James, and getting naked on screen. Her thoughts on film nudity were inspired by watching Kate Winslet in an Australian flick from 1999.

"I love Kate Winslet and Cate Blanchett. I remember watching 'Holy Smoke' and thinking that it was so reassuring to see a young Kate doing something that was so bold in so many ways,” Olsen said. “I thought to myself, ‘OK, so it doesn’t destroy your career if you appear nude or take risks.’"

We have a feeling that this actress won't be playing it safe in Hollywood.

Laci Green On The Problem With Reclaiming The Word 'Bitch'

0
0
“Is it time for us to ditch the word ‘bitch’ or should we all just stop bitching about it?"

So begins Laci Green in a new video for her MTV YouTube series "Braless." Green dives into the controversial debate about the word "bitch" and whether it can be used to empower women or if it's just sexist.

From Jay Z’s song “99 Problems” to Meredith Brooks’ feminist anthem “Bitch” and its most recent incarnation in Rihanna's "Bitch Better Have My Money," "bitch" is tossed around casually in top 40 hits and indie darlings alike.

Even when the intention is to use "bitch" in a light-hearted manner, Green points out that the underlying message of the term is still negative and demeaning. When it comes to people calling a woman a bitch, it's usually because she's doing something that's "not properly feminine," she says. Consider these traits that commonly earn women the "bitch" moniker:

The word "bitch" is also problematic when people use it to describe men. “Bitch is a way that we shame men and women for doing their gender wrong," Green says. “Calling someone a bitch subjugates them and takes away their power.”

Green admits that people are definitely conflicted about the term. While she initially thought it was empowering to call a woman a "bad bitch" or use the phrase "I love you bitches," it wasn't until she became a domestic violence crisis counselor that she reevaluated her position on the word. Every report she read included an abuser calling a woman a bitch. “It justified violence, it was violence,” Green says.

So can we reclaim the word bitch? Green points out that when women reclaim the word, it undermines its power. "It neutralizes the sting of that word if I’m calling myself a bitch," she says. "Words aren’t just words, they’re powerful. They carry meaning and that meaning shapes our reality.”

So choose your words carefully.

Isaiah Washington Recalls Getting A 'Beatdown' After Being Mistaken For Gay During His Early Years

0
0
In an interview with HuffPost Live this week, Isaiah Washington recalled being the victim of an anti-gay attack back in the 1980s in New York.

"I had on leggings," Washington, a professional dancer at the time -- who is also straight -- recalled. "Walking around in the Bronx, you're getting a beatdown." Unfortunately, he added, "Thirty years later, we're still in that same place."

The 51-year-old actor can next be seen opposite Mo'Nique in Patrik-Ian Polk's "Blackbird," which is slated for release on April 24. The film, based on Larry Duplechan's novel of the same name, focuses on a young singer (Julian Walker) who is struggling to come to terms with his sexuality in a small Southern Baptist community.

Washington also talked about the media firestorm surrounding his 2007 "Grey's Anatomy" dismissal. The actor's contract was not renewed after he reportedly called co-star T.R. Knight, who is gay, a "faggot" during an on-set argument with actor Patrick Dempsey.

"This narrative of me being a villain has to stop," Washington, who apologized for the incident and released a PSA decrying the use of hate speech in the wake of the controversy, said. "You can't keep my feet against these coals when the narrative was wrong in the first place."

Mo'Nique Released Her 'Empire' Emails With Lee Daniels And Explains Why

0
0
Earlier this week, Mo'Nique released emails proving director Lee Daniels reached out to her regarding the role of Cookie on "Empire." On Thursday, the actress explained to HuffPost Live why she felt she had no choice but to use the emails to clear the air.

Mo'Nique -- who joined host Marc Lamont Hill, along with Isaiah Washington and Julian Walker, to discuss their film "Blackbird,"-- previously claimed she has been "blackballed" in Hollywood following her 2010 Oscar win for her role in "Precious," a film Daniels directed. It was a comment that prompted weeks-long banter between the actress and director and one that made headlines everywhere.

In effort to lay the issue to rest, Mo'Nique eventually released emails, one of which includes a response from a representative of Daniels who wrote the following about a screen test for the role of Cookie: "This is a time sensitive matter. Lee really does not want Mo’Nique to miss this opportunity."

However, her transparency regarding the emails is a move Mo'Nique had planned to make -- and one she says she forewarned Daniels about.

"Before I gave those emails to Sway, we sent Mr. Daniels an email -- because we love that brother -- to say, 'Hey brother, we don't want to blindside you. We want to let you know we're gonna have to show these because what you're doing right now is you are having my character put in question.' And we never got a response," Mo'Nique said. "So the reason why I had to do that is because I take pride in my character. I take pride in my integrity."

The actress added that she feels no animosity for Daniels, who she described as "one of the most brilliant visionaries this world has ever seen," but she simply couldn't allow anyone to think she wasn't being truthful about being offered the part.

"It's easier to go ... 'let's go past it,' but we can't just keep going past it because then things will never change," Mo'Nique told HuffPost Live. "There's some people in our history that said we can't keep going past it because it we keep going past it, we may still be drinking out of a black water fountain and a white water fountain. ... So I had to show those emails to say, 'Brother, all I'm asking you to do is clear my name.'"

Three New Alleged Bill Cosby Victims Come Forward

0
0
Three new women stepped forward Thursday accusing comedian Bill Cosby of sexually assaulting them, bringing the total number of alleged victims to 38.

In a press conference hosted by attorney Gloria Allred, three women provided detailed accounts of assaults against them by Cosby that sounded very similar to what other alleged victims have shared.

Janice Baker Kinney said Cosby assaulted her in May of 1982 while she was working as a bartender at Harrah's Hotel and Casino in Reno, Nevada, and he was a visiting performer. She said Cosby invited her to a party at a house he was staying at, but when she got there, only three people were in attendance.

She accepted two pills Cosby offered her, began losing her vision and eventually passed out during a game of backgammon. Her next memory is awaking on a couch with her jeans unzipped and blouse opened, and Cosby put his hand in her blouse. She awoke again the next morning naked in Cosby's bed, who allegedly told her, "This is between me and you."

"All this time, and for many, many years, I felt this was my fault," Kinney wrote in a statement Allred's office sent to The Huffington Post. "I took the pills from him."

She said it wasn't until recently, when she heard the stories of other women coming forward, that she realized she was a victim.

"It was like the light bulb FINALLY went on after all these years," the statement continued. "I was 24 years old and I was naïve thinking that this funny and sweet, trustworthy man would never give me something that would harm me. I was wrong and now I know that Mr. Cosby is a predator and needs to be held accountable for what he did to me."

Marcella Tate, a second alleged victim at the press conference, said Cosby assaulted her in 1975 when she was working as a model in Chicago, where she met him through mutual friends at a club. One day, she agreed to pick him up from the airport
and drop him off at the Playboy mansion, where he invited her in and offered her a glass of wine. Her next memory is waking up in bed with a naked Cosby.

"I knew that I was in a sexual situation," she wrote in a statement Allred's office sent to HuffPost. "I never intended to be in that situation...but because I was barely conscious and felt drugged, I was unable to do anything to get out of it."

A third alleged victim, Autumn Burns, said she was victimized by Cosby in 1970 when she was 20 years old working as a model and game starter at the Sahara hotel in Las Vegas. One night, she said, Cosby approached her at another hotel, gave her $500 to gamble with or spend elsewhere and invited her to his show that night. They began spending time together, she said, and he offered to help her find acting and modeling work. One night he invited her back to his room, gave her a scotch and asked her to the bedroom.

"I started feeling woozy and not in control," she wrote in a statement sent to HuffPost from Allred's office. "[...] He told me to sit on the edge of the bed. When I did he grabbed me by the back of my neck and stuck his erect penis down my throat. I remember my head was being pounded up and down and then he lifted me on top of him and had sex with me. When he was done I knew I had to leave the room and get home. I felt like everyone on the casino floor was staring at me and had known what happened."

Allred is providing the three women legal representation, as she's done for other alleged victims.

"The women who are with me today are not the last ones who will come forward," she wrote in an email to HuffPost. "I can assure him that there will be more, because women are no longer going to be intimidated by Cosby’s celebrity, money or power."

Allred is also discouraging people from buying tickets to Cosby's upcoming show in Atlanta and said she hopes the theater will be full of empty seats.

In a November Interview with the Associated Press, Cosby responded publicly to the accusations for the first time, saying, "There’s no response ... There is no comment about that. And I’ll tell you why. I don’t want to compromise your integrity, but I don’t talk about it."

He also joked about the accusations during a performance in Ontatio in January, when he told a woman in the audience, "You know, you should be careful drinking around me."

Cosby's attorney, Martin Singer, did not immediately return HuffPost's request for comment.

Netflix Responds To Allegations Of Racism On Adam Sandler Movie Set

0
0
According to the Indian Country Today Media Network, about a dozen Native Americans walked off the set of Adam Sandler's first Netflix movie, "The Ridiculous Six," on Wednesday. Netflix has responded to those allegations, essentially brushing them under the rug:

The movie has ridiculous in the title for a reason: because it is ridiculous. It is a broad satire of Western movies and the stereotypes they popularized, featuring a diverse cast that is not only part of -- but in on -- the joke.

The actors, though, told ICTMN a different story.

“I was asked a long time ago to do some work on this and I wasn't down for it," actor Loren Anthony said. "Then they told me it was going to be a comedy, but it would not be racist. So I agreed to it but on Monday things started getting weird on the set."

"We talked to the producers about our concerns," said Allison Young, another actor. "They just told us, 'If you guys are so sensitive, you should leave.' I was just standing there and got emotional and teary-eyed. I didn’t want to cry but the feeling just came over me. This is supposed to be a comedy that makes you laugh. A film like this should not make someone feel this way. Nothing has changed. We are still just Hollywood Indians."

According to the actors, the script, which was written by Sandler and Tim Herlihy, had "repeated insults" toward and "grossly misrepresented" Apache culture. Two female characters were reportedly named "Beaver's Breath" and "No Bra."

Slated for release exclusively on Netflix, "The Ridiculous Six" also stars Will Forte, Danny Trejo, David Spade, Nick Nolte and Rob Schneider.

Derek Shepherd Massive 'Grey's Anatomy' Shocker Shatters Hearts

0
0
If you have not seen "Grey's Anatomy" Season 11, Episode 21, "How to Save a Life," DO NOT continue reading. Spoilers ahead!

All the tears. All the tissues. All the heartbreak.

"Grey's Anatomy" killed off one of its stars on Thursday night: McDreamy himself, Derek Shepherd. And it was a doozy.

After he rescues and saves four people following a terrible crash, Derek gets back in his car and carelessly reaches for his phone instead of watching the road. If he had been paying attention, he would have seen the oncoming truck headed his way. He's taken to the hospital -- no, not Grey Sloan Memorial -- and although he's awake, he can't speak. We only hear the voice that's in his head, alerting us to the fact that Derek knows he's going to die. Unlike his colleagues at Grey Sloan, the doctors and surgeons who are taking care of him at the hospital he's transported to are not at the top of their game and fail to take him in for a brain scan right away. This, ultimately, is the cause of his death as he suffers brain damage. (Yes, too close to home, we know!) Finally, after what feels like forever, Meredith is brought to the hospital and makes the decision to take her husband, her soulmate, her true person, off of life support.

Patrick Dempsey, who of course played Derek for the past 11 seasons, released a statement to TVLine following the episode.

“It’s been a remarkable ride,” the actor told TVLine. “The worldwide impact has been extraordinary. It is incredible how devoted and passionate the fans are and I will forever be grateful and humbled by the experience.”

Dempsey also talks about his exit from the show in the new issue of Entertainment Weekly, hitting newsstands later this week. Sadly, one subscriber got a hold of the issue early, and was clearly not happy about the spoiler. His character's death is particularly surprising because Dempsey signed a two-year contract extension last year that would have kept him on the show through next season. "Grey's" has yet to be renewed for a 12th season.

The show's creator Shonda Rhimes released a lengthy statement following the episode, according to People:

Derek Shepherd is and will always be an incredibly important character -- for Meredith, for me and for the fans. I absolutely never imagined saying goodbye to our ‘McDreamy.’ Patrick Dempsey’s performance shaped Derek in a way that I know we both hope became a meaningful example -- happy, sad, romantic, painful and always true -- of what young women should demand from modern love. His loss will be felt by all. Now, Meredith and the entire 'Grey’s Anatomy' family are about to enter uncharted territory as we head into this new chapter of her life. The possibilities for what may come are endless. As Ellis Grey would say: the carousel never stops turning.

R.I.P., McDreamy.

The Bruce Jenner Story Is Good News

0
0
The discussion about whether Bruce Jenner is transitioning has me feeling simultaneously hopeful and deeply uncomfortable. Uncomfortable because, as a daughter of a "transparent," the tabloid tone of ridicule with which the speculation has been presented recalls the cruel words I heard behind my back growing up. It's amazing how well our muscles remember. Who would have thought that the fear and shame I once felt so viscerally in elementary school -- when someone would make fun of transgender people and I'd break out into a sweat, shallowly breathing, gnawing my fingernails until the subject changed -- could be conjured in an instant, twenty-five years later? Any psychologist on the planet, I'm sure.

Of course this tone is not new, is not specific to the speculation about Jenner's gender. He has set himself up for this; ridicule and spectacle have surrounded the Kardashian/Jenner family for years because they have placed their private lives squarely in the public eye. Once one of the best American athletes, Jenner has undergone extensive plastic surgery and made frequent appearances on the reality television show "Keeping Up With the Kardashians," leading people to jab at him for decades now. "Bruce Jenner -- one of the greatest athletes of all time -- what has that show done to him?" I said that once. I'm not proud, and I don't think I'm alone. It's only now that I have a knee-jerk reaction to the digs because I feel a personal connection. I've watched Jenner on the show for years; he and my father are similar in many ways. They are both pilots and athletes who obsessively tinker with their mechanical toys. They are focused, conservative, and introverted, traditionally masculine in many ways, and I'd imagine wouldn't care too much to be a trans advocate. I have seen my father in this man and in this discussion, and have been reminded of how she -- not famous -- has been spoken about. It's difficult to hear what people are saying and to not think they are saying it about my dad. Because aren't they?

It's perhaps unfair, immoral, and cruel to speculate about someone's gender. What's more interesting to me is the significance of the discussion surrounding the mere possibility that Jenner is transitioning.

On the possible transition, Dr. Katherine Rachlin, a psychologist and gender specialist in New York, was quoted in the New York Times as saying, "It would be great to have celebrities who are respected going through gender transitions. I don't know if this falls into that. The whole thing seems pretty tabloid to me."

Rachlin's dismissal of Jenner as a suitable face for the trans community can be understood in the context of the challenges embattled, outsider groups have always faced. She is essentially asking the transgender equivalent of, "But is it good for the Jews?" In order to be included, marginalized groups have to make people feel comfortable, so they must choose the most respectable representatives for the tribe. Laverne Cox and Janet Mock are beautiful and glamorous; they make us feel comfortable. Jeffrey Tambor's character on "Transparent" is pushing it, but we know it is Jeffrey Tambor playing this character, so it's easier to swallow. Bruce Jenner is in a whole other realm that the world doesn't seem quite ready to handle.

My father's transition was awkward to an outsider's eye. I once caught my step-brother imitating her voice, and my stomach still tightens at the memory. He exaggerated the high pitch in the same way In Touch Weekly featured Jenner's face with heightened colors of makeup. My father did not make everyone comfortable, but she's still a face in and of the trans community.

My hope is that this whole ridiculous, invasive spectacle may help expand public understanding of transgender people. I worship Laverne Cox with the best of them -- I sat in a meeting with her once and was in awe of her strength, beauty, and articulateness -- but there's a whole other plebeian trans population out there -- people who aren't young, glamorous, or traditionally feminine. Jenner is no plebeian, I realize, but he's still different than many of the images involved in the trans discussion today, and for that I am grateful. So he, or at least the conversation surrounding him, is "good for the trans."

It's great for them, really. Kim Kardashian alone has over 31 million followers on Twitter and 30 million on Instagram. This will amplify the conversation and expand awareness exponentially. Regardless of what Rachlin thinks the movement needs, the parade around Jenner puts the discussion directly in the faces of people who otherwise would not be involved.

It's time we widen our scope and take a look at all the faces in a community. As much as we try to, we cannot curate humanity.

Jim Norton Defends Making Bill Cosby Jokes: 'He Had To Be Made Fun Of'

Comedian Jim Norton generally doesn't "attack other comedians," he told HuffPost Live in a Friday conversation, "But, you know, once there's 30 rape allegations, I tend to lose the comedic bond."

For that reason, the "Louie" star feels no remorse for his material poking fun at disgraced comic, Bill Cosby.

"I'm a pervert -- I get it -- but you're a sociopath if you can do that for all those years and never catch yourself in the mirror and go, 'What the fuck is wrong with me?'" Norton said, referring to Cosby. "How do you never have that moment of clarity?"

"So yeah, he had to be made fun of," the radio host affirmed. "And it's kind of what's on everybody's mind, so I feel obligated to talk about it."

Norton, whose comedy special "Contextually Inadequate" premieres on EPIX Friday night, recalled that Cosby was always suspect, but that his alleged actions are ultimately unfathomable.

"He was always too clean-cut," he said. "[But] nobody thought he was a rapist."

According to MTV News, the group helped a Harmonizer named Tristine ask her friend, Jane, to prom. MTV reports that Tristine thought her promposal would involve a special video package from Fifth Harmony. Instead, the singers decided to show up in person where they put on a cute and quick surprise performance to convince Jane that going with Tristine to prom would be totally "Worth It."

Jane (obviously) said yes.

'Kurt & Courtney' Director Says Courtney Love Made Filmmaking Experience A 'Living Hell'

"Montage of Heck" is the latest documentary to explore the psyche of late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, but it's certainly not the most controversial. Seventeen years after he made waves with his documentary "Kurt & Courtney," director Nick Broomfield has less than fond memories of the production, he told HuffPost Live on Friday.

In fact, making the documentary, which focused on Cobain's life and suicide, was a "living hell," Broomfield remembered. That was due in large part to the efforts of Cobain's widow, Courtney Love, who tried to stop the release of the film, which explored the conspiracy theory that she may have been involved in her husband's death.

"She tried very hard to stop the film [from] being made, I remember. I mean, this was a long time ago, but I'm so pleased I'm not working on that film anymore. It was a miserable experience," he told host Ricky Camilleri.

Once Love had spoken out against the film, it wasn't long before the documentary lost its financial backing and companies started distancing themselves from the film. Broomfield explained:

It was great meeting Kurt's friends and stuff, but I remember MTV [was] involved and they stopped being involved because Courtney persuaded them to pull the funding. The BBC wanted to pull the plug on the film. Sundance accepted the film, and then two days before the festival chucked it out because Courtney had managed to [derail it]. They shared the same publicist, [Sundance chairman] Robert Redford and Courtney ... so it was a ghastly event, and I was on the jury [at Sundance] that year.

In fact, Broomfield said he was surprised the film ever made it to the big screen at all.

"It was a complete nightmare," he said. "I never thought the film was going to come out."

Despite the number of roadblocks Broomfield faced while making his film, Love has been much more supportive of the latest Cobain documentary. Broomfield shared a few words for Brett Morgen, the director behind the new film "Montage of Heck," which was authorized by both Love and her daughter, Frances Bean Cobain.

"I'm pleased that Brett Morgen caught his blessings on this, otherwise he'd be in the same boat that I [was]. But I think when you make a pact with the devil, you're somewhat compromised in what you can say," Broomfield said.

Ice Cube Reflects On 'Friday' 20 Years Later, Reveals Details About Final 'Friday' Sequel

Twenty years ago this weekend, “Friday” was released in theaters. Directed by F. Gary Gray and starring Ice Cube, Chris Tucker, Nia Long, Tommy ‘Tiny’ Lister, John Witherspoon, the film follows Craig and Smokey (played by Cube and Tucker, respectively) as the pair encounter various obstacles while attempting to pay off a $200 marijuana debt to their South Central drug dealer within 24 hours.

Produced with an estimated $3.5 million budget, the comedy opened at the box office grossing over $6.5 million and bumped Michael Bay’s action pack flick, “Bad Boys” from the #2 slot. With its release on April 26, 1995, the film became an instant classic. Co-written by Ice Cube, the script's memorable one-liners made an impression on fans and casual viewers alike.

A full two decades after the film's initial release, the resurgence of “Bye Felicia” in pop culture vernacular has revived and inspired affection for the urban cult classic.

The popular phrase is taken from a "Friday" scene where the character of Felisha (the spelling of which the 'Bye Felicia' meme appears to have taken some liberties) is dismissed by Cube's Craig. For Ice Cube, the phrase is a testament to the timelessness of "Friday's" comedy -- which still resonates with fans 20 years later.

Ice Cube talked to The Huffington Post about how Means’ role has taken on a life of its own -- producing the catchphrase he considers to be another way to tell people to “get the fuck out my face.”

“[Means] was way out of character in doing that movie. From what I understand, she was a model-comedian, and then she just went and did this role [laughs] where she was this crackhead in the neighborhood named Felisha,” the 45-year-old actor and former N.W.A. member told HuffPost in an interview this week. The character of Felisha speaks to the broader nature of the film -- to which Cube attributes "Friday's" success.

“What’s magic about the movie is it takes everyday stuff that you would normally cry about or normally be depressed about and it gives you two hours to laugh at it,” Cube told HuffPost. “And to me, that’s her figure as well. But it’s a trip that phrase has taken a life of its own. It’s a testament that the movie has stood the test of time. The movie is not just in people’s DVD players and their computers, but it’s in their hearst. And that’s the most important place.”

With writing partner D.J. Pooh, Cube went on to write and produce two sequels to "Friday": 2000's “Next Friday” and 2002's “Friday After Next,” both under his Cube Vision production banner. While both films earned critical acclaim, a staple of the original cast was noticeably absent -- and fans have longed for the return of Chris Tucker's role as "Smokey" to the franchise.

In a 2012 interview, Cube told MTV News that he was writing Tucker into the script of a fourth and final installment of the “Friday” series aptly titled, “Last Friday.” Tucker himself has also commented on the potential reprisal and whether he would commit to another appearance.

“If I do a movie like ‘Friday’ again it has to evolve,” Tucker stated during a 2014 interview on Sirius radio’s "Sway In The Morning." “I evolved from Smokey when I was that age when I did that movie -- from when I did ‘Fifth Element’ or even the first ‘Rush Hour.’ So, every character I look at now, I’m like, can I play it because where I am right now, because I pull a lot from real life. I put a lot of myself in the characters.”

While Cube told HuffPost that he’s still vying to land Tucker for “Last Friday,” he attributed the film’s ongoing delay to the business of Hollywood and acquiring the budget to retain former stars from the first three films.

“You have a lot of stars that I need to bring back. They wasn’t superstars when I first put them in the movie, but they are now,” he explained to HuffPost. “So it cost a lot more money to make that movie than it did in the past."

With the embrace of "Friday's" "Bye Felicia" catchphrase -- certainly by many too young to remember the film's release 20 years ago -- the appetite for another sequel seems to be there. The business of getting it made, Cube says, has been a process.

"It’s hard for movie companies who sometimes have a corporate ladder. It’s hard for them to wrap their heads around doing a movie like this sometimes when they look at the raw numbers. It’s hard for them to say, ‘Ok, we need to spend 25, 30 million dollars to do the new one,’ but the raw numbers don’t support that so it never makes it up the corporate ladder,” Cube said. “So that’s a tragedy, because we’re dealing with entertainment and we’re dealing with giving the people what they want. And it sucks when ‘business’ moves out the ‘show.’ It’s show business, but sometimes the business becomes ‘business show,’ instead of 'show business.'”

Happy 20th birthday, "Friday." Here's hoping you'll celebrate the next one with the newest "Friday" installment on the block.

Isaiah Washington: A Silicon Valley Hotel Racially Profiled Me 'For Being An Uppity Negro With A Cigar'

Isaiah Washington told HuffPost Live on Thursday that he was "racially profiled in Silicon Valley" on Saturday, April 18.

Washington explained to HuffPost Live's Marc Lamont Hill that he was at a "very nice hotel, just last Saturday, smoking a cigar," when a security guard approached and asked for his name. Washington said he had "fallen asleep at 1 o'clock in the morning" -- presumably in a public area of the hotel, though he did not elaborate -- but he felt he was targeted solely because of his race.

"[Security] just wanted my black behind out of the hotel for being an uppity negro with a cigar," Washington said. "He didn't like the way I looked."

After much discussion, conflict was eventually sorted out and Washington was allowed to stay.

Washington appeared on HuffPost Live along with Mo'Nique and Julian Walker to discuss "Blackbird," their film about a young African-American man coming to terms with his sexuality in the deep South.
