Hilary Swank Says Transgender Acceptance Has 'A Long Way To Go'

This was a different kind of acceptance speech.

Hilary Swank, who won an Oscar for portraying a murdered transgender teen in 1999's "Boys Don't Cry," says acceptance of transgender people has progressed somewhat.

"I think we've taken strides since that movie," she said Thursday on "The Meredith Vieira Show." "We have a long way to go."

"It's astonishing to me that we are here in 2015 and there are so many issues that need to be looked at and handled and we shouldn't dictate who people should love," Swank elaborated. "Let people love people."

The issue of transphobia has emerged in the headlines lately. Transgender teen Taylor Alesena died by suicide after allegedly being bullied by classmates.

On the White House website Wednesday, senior adviser Valerie Jarrett wrote a post calling for a ban on conversion therapy, ABC News noted. The letter was in response to a transgender youth who died by suicide in December after being forced into the practice.

Bobby Brown made his first public appearance since the hospitalization of his daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown in January.

In between performances at the Soul Food Festival in Los Angeles on Saturday, Bobby Brown thanked the crowd for their support.

"I wanna thank all of y'all for coming out tonight, for supporting me and my family," he said. "Rough times are rough times. Hard times are hard times. I don't know what the hell I'm going through right now, but I'm giving it to God."

Bobbi Kristina, 22, was hospitalized on Jan. 31 after her longtime boyfriend, Nick Gordon, and friend Max Lomas found her unresponsive in a bathtub at the couple's home in Roswell, Georgia. She remains hospitalized in Atlanta.

Bobbi Kristina is the fifth child of Bobby Brown, and the only child of Whitney Houston, who died on Feb. 11, 2012.

'SNL' Introduces A New 'Game Of Thrones' Kingdom With 'Boyz N The Hood' Spoof

"Game of Thrones" is about to introduce us to a new region of Westeros, but we're not talking about Dorne. We're heading to South Centros.

"Saturday Night Live" imagined what a crossover between "Game of Thrones" and John Singleton's "Boyz n the Hood" would look like, resulting in an eighth kingdom.

The "SNL" parody features Ice Cube (Kenan Thompson) decked out in Jon Snow-like attire, Leslie Jones spoofing Brienne, and host Taraji P. Henson getting emotional over the Red Wedding.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, the Kingslayer himself, also shows up with a message for the haters. This probably isn't the movie spinoff George R.R. Martin had in mind.

"Game of Thrones" returns Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.

'Furious 7' Breaks More Records, Tops The Box Office Again

NEW YORK (AP) — The high-octane thriller "Furious 7" maintained speed in its second week, racing away with $60.6 million at North American theaters and bringing its box-office total to a robust $252.5 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Universal's "Furious 7" more than lapped the competition. The only new wide release of the weekend, the rodeo romance "The Longest Ride," opened with $13.5 million. That was good enough for third place for the Fox release, which stars Clint Eastwood's son, Scott Eastwood. In second was the DreamWorks animated alien adventure "Home," which pulled in $19 million in its third week of release.

But "Furious 7" continued to dominate the marketplace, dropping only 59 percent from its remarkable $147.2 million debut last weekend. Globally, it has already crossed $800 million in its first two weeks of release, according to Universal.

The weekend international total — an eye-popping $195 million — was boosted by the film premiering in China on Sunday, where it earned an estimated $68.6 million in just one day.

Over 10 days, "Furious 7," which prominently features a tribute to the late actor Paul Walker, has already out-grossed all previous installments of the 14-year-old franchise.

At its current pace, "Furious 7" will likely become the highest grossing film in Universal's history. The studio's "Jurassic Park," from 1993, holds Universal's mark with $1.02 billion worldwide.

It's a summer blockbuster-sized result for "Furious 7," but by opening in April, it has little competition in its way. On a much smaller scale, the critically acclaimed sci-fi film "Ex Machina" drew the year's largest theater average of $62,489 in four theaters.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Rentrak. Where available, the latest international numbers for Friday through Sunday are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "Furious 7," $60.6 million ($195 million international).

2. "Home," $19 million ($15.2 million international).

3. "The Longest Ride," $13.5 million ($3 million international).

4. "Get Hard," $8.6 million ($1.4 million international).

5. "Cinderella," $7.2 million ($12.6 million international).

6. "The Divergent Series: Insurgent," $6.9 million ($7.9 million international).

7. "Woman in Gold," $5.9 million.

8. "It Follows," $2 million.

9. "Danny Collins," $1.6 million.

10. "While We're Young," $1.4 million.

What could we need more than yet another award show? How about an award show featuring nominated performances and moments from movies that have a 23 percent ("The Other Woman"), 29 percent ("Annabelle") and 35 percent ("Horrible Bosses 2") rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

But this is the 2015 MTV Movie Awards, which is not to be confused with those other award shows where the average voter is a 63-year-old white man. Nope, these are cool, hip and so very edgy awards. Just ask MTV.

Comedian Amy Schumer hosted the 24th annual celebration of box office hits and YA adaptations, and anticipated that people would be "mad" when it's all said and done -- so we knew things were off to a great start.

While prestige award-winners "Boyhood" and "Birdman" were thrown a bone with a couple nominations, "The Fault In Our Stars" won Movie of the Year, and Shailene Woodley won Best Female Performance and MTV's Trailblazer Award.

Below, a full list of MTV Movie Awards winners for 2015:

'Game Of Thrones' Season 5 Returns With A Flashback, Funeral And New Nemesis

$

0
Finally, "Game of Thrones" returned on Sunday night, and the Season 5 premiere definitely lived up to all the hype. The first episode of the new season had murder, a funeral and dragons, aka everything you'd want and expect from "Game of Thrones." Beyond that, the premiere caught us up with every major character except Arya (don't worry, we'll see her next week), setting up the unquestionably crazy season to come.

Spoiler alert for Season 5, Episode 1, "The Wars to Come"

Here's what happened:

The first-ever flashback
Although showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff made a rule that they would avoid flashbacks in the series, they broke that rule this season. The episode opened with a flashback to Cersei's childhood when she visited a fortune teller known as Maggy the Frog. The woman answered two questions, telling young Cersei things we've already seen: she'll become Queen and have three children.

Tywin's funeral
Charles Dance wasn't gone for good after the Season 4 finale. The actor returned for one final scene: Tywin's funeral.

Tyrion and Varys arrive in Pentos
Varys finally let Tyrion out of the wooden crate he was locked up in while traveling across the sea. The two arrived in Illyrio's palace in Pentos and Varys explained his mission to Tyrion: to unite him with Daenerys to assist her in taking over the Seven Kingdoms. Will the two finally meet this season? (Spoiler: according to these leaked set photos, yep!)

tyrion crate

Wait, is that Lancel Lannister?!
After Tywin's funeral, a young man with a buzz cut approaches Cersei whom she calls cousin Lancel. Remember him? Lancel used to be awkward and skinny with long blond hair. He was the one responsible for feeding Robert Baratheon so much wine before the King was killed by a boar and who had a secret affair with Cersei. We last saw Lancel in Season 2, but now he's back, looking much more grown up as a devout follower of the Faith of the Seven religion. After his conversation with Cersei, it's clear Lancel will become a major nemesis to her this season.

lancel

Chaos reins in Meereen
The first death of the season comes in a completely unexpected moment. An Unsullied visits a brothel (just to cuddle!) when suddenly one of the Sons of the Harpy, a group of Meereenese noblemen rebelling against Dany, cuts his throat.

R.I.P. Mance Rayder
Mance Rayder is a man of dignity and will take a knee for no man. Jon Snow tries to talk the leader of the Free Folk into pledging allegiance to Stannis as he marches South to defeat Roose Bolton. When he refuses, Stannis has Mance burned to death until Jon shows mercy and shoots him with an arrow.

Sansa and Littlefinger leave the Vale
After watching Robin's pathetic sword fighting, Sansa and Littlefinger depart from the Vale to head elsewhere. But where are they going? Wherever it is, it looks super close to where Brienne and Podrick are.

Pissed off dragons
Dany checks on two of her dragons, Rhaegal and Viserion, who are chained up underground. To put it simply, they are pretty pissed and breathe a bunch of fire at her. The kids are not happy.

MTV's 'Scream' Trailer Features A Severed Head In A Hot Tub

$

MTV debuted the trailer for "Scream," the TV show based on Wes Craven's horror franchise, at the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday. Featuring Willa Fitzgerald, Bex Taylor-Klaus, John Karna, Carlson Young, Amadeus Serafini and Bella Thorne, the first look at "Scream" features a lot of dead bodies, teenagers hooking up and a garage scene. (No word if that character will have the same demise as Rose McGowan's, though.) Bella Thorne's character also hangs out in a hot tub with a severed head.

These kids definitely don't know the rules to surviving a horror movie. "Scream" debuts on MTV on June 30.

Here's the synopsis of the show, per MTV:

After a cyber-bullying incident results in a brutal murder, the shocking violence stirs up memories of a killing spree from the past that has haunted some, intrigued others and maybe just inspired a new killer. A group of teens - with two old friends struggling to reconnect at its heart - become lovers, enemies, suspects, targets and victims of a killer who’s out for blood.

'Game Of Thrones' Season 5 Has Its First Unexpected Plot Twist

$
0
0
For the first (major) time in five years, "Game of Thrones" book readers no longer have the upper hand. Fans were warned that the new season of "GoT" would deviate heavily from George R.R. Martin's books with unexpected deaths and altered storylines -- and the premiere brought both of those things. We're all going into these upcoming episodes as blind as Maester Aemon, and as Richard Lawson's Vanity Fair review contends, Season 5 is better than ever because of it.

Spoiler alert for Season 5, Episode 1 "The Wars to Come"

Sunday night's premiere kicked off with the first unexpected death of the season. In the episode's final moments, we saw Jon Snow try to persuade Mance Rayder, the King Beyond the Wall, to swear allegiance to Stannis as he attempts to take back the North. But the prideful Mance refused, and thus burned at the stake until Jon shot him dead with an arrow.

It was a huge surprise to fans of the books since (spoiler alert) in Book 5, A Dance With Dragons, Mance doesn't actually die. Instead, Melisandre uses her magic to swap the appearances of Mance and Rattleshirt (aka Lord of Bones), so while everyone, including Jon Snow, thinks they saw him die, Mance actually lives in disguise until Melisandre reveals his true identity.

But does this mean Mance will return to the series? Ciaran Hinds, who plays Mance, gave Entertainment Weekly an ambiguous answer. "I imagine that if Mance were to come back, like in the books, he’d come back in a different guise, as a different person," Hinds said. "It wouldn’t involve me, probably."

Since we didn't see Melisandre do any switcheroo magic, and since we haven't seen Rattleshirt since Season 3, it seems unlikely that the show will follow Mance's storyline from the books. But perhaps Rattleshirt (who has been recast and is expected to appear later this season), will take over Mance's role when he heads to Winterfell for a wedding. Then again, will that wedding happen the same way as it does in the books or can we expect that crazy Sansa theory to become a reality?

"Game of Thrones" airs on Sundays at 9:00 p.m. ET on HBO.

Suge Knight Witness Balks On Stand In Murder Case Against Rap Mogul

By Daina Beth Solomon
LOS ANGELES, April 13 (Reuters) - A key witness in the hit-and-run murder case against Marion "Suge" Knight told a Los Angeles judge on Monday he was reluctant to testify against the one-time rap music mogul, declining even to positively identify him in open court.
Cle "Boan" Sloan, one of two men Knight is accused of deliberately running over in his pickup truck at a hamburger stand in the Los Angeles suburb of Compton, took the witness stand at a preliminary hearing in the case.
Prosecutors say Knight traded punches with Sloan through the window of his vehicle before putting the truck into reverse, knocking Sloan and another man, Terry Carter, to the ground. They say he then pulled forward to run over both men.
Carter, 55, later died. Sloan, 51, suffered a badly mangled left foot and head injuries.
Knight, 49, is charged with murder, attempted murder and two counts of felony hit-and-run in the Jan. 29 fracas, which followed an argument on the set of a commercial for the film "Straight Outta Compton."
On the witness stand at the start of the hearing, Sloan, who described himself as a "non-active gang member," balked at giving testimony that would incriminate the defendant.
"I will not be used to send Suge Knight to prison," he said.
Asked by Deputy District Attorney Cynthia Barnes if he could identify Knight as she pointed to him in the courtroom, Sloan said, "That doesn't look like Mr. Knight."
Wearing an orange jail uniform and handcuffs for Monday's proceeding, Knight appeared slightly thinner since his last court hearing, with a touch of gray in his beard.
If found guilty of murder, the co-founder of the influential hip-hop label Death Row Records would face a mandatory sentence of 25 years to life in prison under California's three-strikes rule. He is being held on $25 million bail.
Prosecutors also have alleged Knight was part of an extortion scheme in which new rappers arriving in Los Angeles and Las Vegas were required to pay him a "tax."
Knight has pleaded not guilty to the charges. His attorney has said Knight accidentally ran into the two men as he tried to speed away from the scene of what he thought was an ambush attempt.

Man Accuses Girlfriend Of Sleeping With 'The Entire Wu-Tang Clan' On 'Divorce Court'

What do you do if you think your girlfriend cheated on you with a bunch of rappers? Take her to court, obviously.

In an episode of "Divorce Court" from February, Nathan Sellers accused his girlfriend at the time, Lia Palmquist, of cheating on him with "the entire Wu-Tang Clan." In a clip from the episode recently posted to YouTube, Palmquist explains that she went backstage at a Wu-Tang concert to meet the rap group and was just having a good time. But Sellers wasn't too pleased, cutting her off to say, "She gave the Wu some tang."

The clip ends with Judge Lynn Toler learning the definition of "bustdown behavior," but if you're craving more relationship drama you can watch the full episode online.

Amy Schumer's Booty Parody Video Is, Um, Accurate

Last year, Vogue was super late to the party when they declared that we're living in the era of the big booty, but our pop culture obsession with the derrière hasn't quit.

Enter Amy Schumer with “Milk Milk Lemonade," an LOL-worthy parody of all those butt-loving songs as a promo for the third season of "Inside Amy Schumer." With plenty of celebrity cameos, including one from her new BFF Amber Rose (because obviously), it's enough to keep you satisfied until Season 3 premieres on April 21.

Also, maybe this is why Schumer thinks people are confusing her with Meghan Trainor?
