The glazed-eyed look of a person seeing a celebrity he or she has long adored is something like an advanced state of starvation mixed with a building orgasm. The ravenous yearning, the unbridled excitement, the need, oh my God the need, to interact.

When It Comes To Feminism And Reproductive Rights, Survey Says Labels Don't Work

New research from Vox revealed that while a very small percentage of Americans identify as feminists, the majority still believe in gender equality.

The survey included 1,067 participants from across the U.S. and covered topics including gender equality, LGBT issues and abortion. Twenty-one percent of participants were between 18 and 29 years old, 25 percent were between 30 and 44 years old, 27 percent were between 45 and 59 years old and 27 percent were over 60 years old. About half the participants identified as female and half as male.

Vox found that only 18 percent of Americans consider themselves feminists. Fifty-two percent of survey participants said that they didn't consider themselves feminists, 26 percent were "unsure" and 4 percent refused to answer the question.

With so few people identifying as feminists, you'd think most Americans wouldn't support gender equality. Wrong. Vox found that a whopping 85 percent of participants responded that they do "believe in equality for women." And 76 percent of participants believe there is still work to be done when it comes to "equality for women in work, life and politics."

While the majority of Americans don't choose to identify as feminists, they support the ideals of feminism. In the great words of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: "Feminism is the social, political and economic equality of the sexes." It's really that simple.

The survey found that Americans are equally as confused about where they stand on abortion as feminism. When asked about abortion, only 28 percent of participants agreed with the statement: "Abortion should be legal in almost all cases."

However, when the survey question incorporated women, the results changed. When people were asked if "women should have a legal right to safe and accessible abortion in almost all cases," 37 percent said yes.

"That's a jump of nine percentage points in who thinks abortion ought to be generally legal, just by highlighting the fact that a woman is involved in the situation," Vox's Sarah Kliff wrote.

These results indicate just how complicated Americans' feelings about reproductive rights are. "The public has diverse views on abortion. But it's rarely a split between 'abortion is right' and 'abortion is wrong,'" Kliff wrote. "Instead, there is a nuance that the public conversation typically misses: a factoring in of personal circumstances and beliefs that manifest themselves in deeply held individual views."

While many people shy away from labels when it comes to women's issues, it seems that most agree with the idea behind them: Women should have the same social, political and economic rights as men.

Head over to Vox to read the rest of the research.

'Game Of Thrones' Star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Teases Jon Snow's True Lineage

Warning: possible spoilers ahead.

Who are Jon Snow’s parents?

It’s a question that’s been as torturesome for “Game of Thrones” fans as Theon Greyjoy’s actual on-screen torture, but Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, aka Jaime Lannister, may have just brought us one step closer to the answer.

R+L=J. That’s a theory,” Coster-Waldau teased in a conversation with HuffPost Live's Caitlyn Becker on Friday.

The popular fan theory claiming that Ned Stark is not Jon Snow’s father has been gaining momentum on the Internet for a while now, though it has yet to be confirmed. While Coster-Waldau remains as tight-lipped as Lannisters tend to be, we can be sure there are at least three people on the planet who do know who Jon Snow's parents really are. When the show's creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff pitched the series to "Game of Thrones" author George R.R. Martin, the mastermind behind it all reportedly asked them one question: who do you think is Jon Snow’s mother and father?

“And they answered the question correctly, apparently, so they got the job,” Coster-Waldau recalled.

With Season 5 premiering this Sunday, winter is coming. And, hopefully, so are some answers.

Freida Pinto On The 'Extreme Ecstasy' Of Her Politically-Charged Dance Film

Some life stories seem fated for Hollywood.

"Desert Dancer" tells the extraordinary tale of Iran's most famous living dancer, Afshin Ghaffarian, who fled his country during the Arab Spring to freely practice his art in Europe. The semi-biographical movie stars Reece Ritchie as Ghaffarian, and opens in select U.S. theaters today.

The movie also stars Freida Pinto as the fictional Elaheh, a talented, mysterious and troubled dancer who inspires Ghaffarian to revolt. Filming took place in part in London and Jordan. (Life seemed to imitate art when Ghaffarian, originally slated to be filmed in a dance promoting the movie, was barred entry to Jordan because the country's government presumed him to be gay.)

As with so many new exiles from Iran, Ghaffarian's story links closely to the heated Iranian elections of 2008. He became a target of the government that year, not only for openly supporting opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi, but because of his profession. The field of dance has been a special target since Ayatollah Khomeini banned all forms of it in 1976.

One faithful-to-life scene in "Desert Dancer" shows a pair of government goons threatening to beat Ghaffarian "artistically," after discovering an identity card on his person doctored to label him an "artist" (to be a "dancer" would be worse). Ghaffarian eventually fled to Europe, where a remarkable on-stage demonstration led to the French government granting him asylum.

Pinto and the rest of the cast performed all of their own dance moves in the film, which come to a head in a depiction of one of the desert shows Ghaffarian staged outside of Tehran as an underground series, hoping to avoid capture. Some of the movie's most memorable scenes are these sequences, featuring blue and gold swathes of Jordan's Wadi Rum desert and the beautifully stripped-down choreography of Akram Khan, who previously worked on the 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony in London.

Pinto trained for a year to prepare for the part, which was so taxing she ended up concussed after one dance-related injury. In an email exchange with The Huffington Post, she discussed the formidable role, and her hopes for the movie.

It's rare for actors and actresses from India to cross into the global film industry. Do you have role models or mentors who have helped you chart your unusual path?
Art is one of the most universal and globally understood mediums so I don't look at my experience as being rare, just very fortunate.

What inspired you to take a part in a movie by a first-time director?
I was really drawn to the complexity of the character. She is very unpredictable and her mystery is boundless. Elaheh comes with beauty and pain which is what intrigues me about people in general and how it manifests itself in people's lives.

When Richard Raymond, the director of the film, approached me, I was immediately intrigued by the story and excited for the opportunity to train for the role. I am proud of the film and while I can't truly know what people think about it I just hope it starts a conversation.

Some of the movie's most striking scenes are the choreographed sequences. Do you have any formal dance background?
I am not trained in dance but always believed I had a dancer's soul.

Your character is full of contradictions. She's committed to dance, but her addictions get in the way. She's instinctively passionate in her approach to life, but because of her past, she's also deeply cynical about the future. How did you get into what must have been a tricky mentality to enter?
Playing this role required me to expose myself to every emotion that is out there, ranging from the deepest pain to extreme ecstasy. It was a very daunting task but I do believe dance helped me to access spaces within myself I was unaware existed.

In a short time, you've worked with a long list of legends, from Danny Boyle to Woody Allen. What are some lessons you've learned along the way?
The one thing that every director has inspired me to do is approach every project as if it were my first. While the experience counts and is very useful, the rawness can never be lost and it's what keeps things exciting.

This interview has been edited and condensed.

Isaiah Washington: Chris Rock's Tweets About Getting Pulled Over Are Like Shouting 'Fire In The Theater'

Isaiah Washington thinks Chris Rock owes his social media followers a more in-depth explanation of the selfie he posted when he was pulled over by the police for the third time in less than seven weeks.

After Rock's photo went viral, Washington spoke out on Twitter by saying Rock should "adapt," apparently by following in the footsteps of Washington, who wrote that he traded in his Mercedes for three Toyota Priuses because he "got tired of being pulled over by police." Washington told "The HuffPost Show" on Friday that his tweets were "tongue-in-cheek in a way" with a hint of "truth in jest," but he was met with outrage online.

"Black Twitter went crazy because in the real life, how can you adapt to racial profiling?" Washington said.

But the "Blackbird" actor told hosts Roy Sekoff and Marc Lamont Hill that he'd like to hear what happened when Rock actually spoke to the cops who pulled him over. Washington said:

He never responded. To this day, we don't know what happened on that third [stop] in seven weeks. We still don't know from Chris Rock to this day what happened. You can't have 3 million followers and come out there and press the button -- that's like saying right now ... "There's a bomb on a plane or a fire in the theater," and then say, "Hey, I've been stopped three times," and then you don't give us the update on how you got out of it.

Jimmy Fallon has added George R.R. Martin to his list of things to be thankful for.

In his "Thank You Notes" segment Friday night, the comedian thanked the Game of Thrones author for developing his new HBO series, "Captain Cosmos." Viewers at home are also pretty psyched for the series, but Fallon's reasoning is a little bit different.

"Thank you, George R.R. Martin, for developing a new HBO series called 'Captain Cosmos,'" Fallon said in the segment. "Which incidentally is also my nickname when I go out for drinks with the gals."

Fallon also expressed his thanks for Tax Day, the U.S. Postal Service and Washington, D.C.

While Zoe Saldana received plaudits for her red carpet form after the birth of her twin boys, the actress revealed that getting there has been brutal. And it isn't over.

Plagued by low energy, with a body "bent out of shape" after she gave birth in November, Saldana took to Facebook on Friday to describe her post-pregnancy difficulties -- and vowed to overcome them.

"Bouncing back feels impossible, but I know it is important as a woman, and now a mommy, to not give up," she wrote. "I am determined to get my energy back and find balance for my body before these little guys start walking, and before I go back to work. .... my clock is ticking!"

The 36-year-old star of "Avatar" and "Guardians of the Galaxy," who had previously welcomed social media dialogue on breastfeeding issues, this time invited other new parents to talk with her for the next two months as she continues working with a personal trainer and shares exercise and dietary tips. Who's in?

Hi everyone, As you all know, we welcomed twin boys last November. Yes, by far, the most amazing experience of my life,...

One Thing You Didn't Notice About Bane In 'The Dark Knight Rises'

As far as bad guys in franchises go, they don't get much better than Bane. The "Dark Knight Rises" villain is a former member of the League of Shadows; his iconic mask and garbled voice have inspired cat videos all across the Internet; and, of course, he has an affinity for hanging out in darkness. But is that all he's about?

Not so fast.

Though Tom Hardy made Bane one of the most popular villains in recent memory, there's one major thing the character does that fans may have missed, and it could change the entire way you look at the movie:

Bane is knitting.

tv show gifs
Image: YouTube

That's right, Gotham. Just like your grandmother and people who make their own clothes, Bane enjoys the fine art of string work. He probably even has a Pinterest account to get ideas for new projects. How fun, right? It's easy to miss when it happens, but you can clearly see him playing with rope or string during the movie, perhaps knitting or crocheting.

An example of Bane's skills can be seen on display during the courtroom scene:

Fan forums also circulate this image, which can be seen in a Warner Bros. "Dark Knight Rises" featurette:

Image: Imgur

Shocked? So were the people who noted the peculiar finding on Reddit:

Granted, everybody needs a little "me time" now and again, but it seems pretty out of place for someone set on destroying a city to all of a sudden have a penchant for arts and crafts.

There's actually a major reason why this is in the movie, which Warner Bros. confirmed to HuffPost Entertainment, and a little background on the film finally reveals the truth.

The Dark Knit Rises: The Major Reason Behind Bane's Knitting

As director Chris Nolan has said, when he did his draft on the script for "The Dark Knight Rises," it was "all about" Charles Dickens' novel A Tale of Two Cities. This inspiration is illustrated by Commissioner Gordon's eulogy for Bruce Wayne at the end of the film, which is taken directly from the book:

When you consider that info, it's apparent that Bane's knitting is actually an Easter egg in the story. As one Tumblr user points out, it's easy to see Bane as a representative for Madame Defarge. She's a villain from A Tale of Two Cities who has a passion for two things in particular -- killing and knitting, as seen in this excerpt:

“Eh well! How then?” demanded madame, tying another knot, as if there were another enemy strangled.

It can be argued that Defarge's knitting represents a couple of different things. In the story, she literally knits a list of condemned names into her work, but some say it's also meant to symbolize the callousness with which she carries out her treachery. Defarge performs her seemingly innocuous activity while sentencing people to death, which is exactly what Bane is doing in the courtroom.

The similarities between the characters don't stop there. Defarge has had terrible wrongs committed against her and her family in the past and believes innocents should die for their families' crimes. Sound familiar?

Madame Defarge ... or should we say Mama Bane? (Getty)

Warner Bros. confirmed the Easter egg to HuffPost, saying suspicions that Bane's apparent knitting is a reference to Defarge are "accurate." The company chose not to elaborate further.

So there you have it. And for anyone who questions his unusual hobby, just think who's going to be laughing when you're freezing to death in Gotham's nuclear winter and Bane is nice and toasty in a brand-new, handmade pair of mittens.

In what comes as a surprise to no one, Hillary Clinton is expected to announce on Sunday that she is running for president in 2016. She's been an assumed candidate for months, so an official declaration doesn't change much, but it does open Clinton up to a new level of scrutiny that she's been able to avoid since her last campaign in 2008. On Friday's episode of "The HuffPost Show," hosts Roy Sekoff and Marc Lamont Hill discussed with panelists Bob Saget and Isaiah Washington how Hillary can keep things exciting this time around, and Washington had a novel idea for her running mate.

Peter Dinklage's Favorite 'Game Of Thrones' Scene May Have A Secret Meaning

$
0
0
A big revelation is coming.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Peter Dinklage revealed his favorite scene in "Game of Thrones" is in Season 4 when Jaime Lannister visits Tyrion in his cell and the two discuss their cousin Orson:

I loved the lines about their cousin, who’s a bit thick and smashing the beetles. Because it was about something from their past. It’s like Tyrion’s in shock, or something. He doesn’t know why he’s telling that story and he just wants to know what it was about, and what life is about, and it had such an abstract non-f*****g King’s Landing feel to it.

What the actor didn't say is that there may be a big reason the scene had a “non-f*****g King’s Landing feel to it”: it’s possibly a major diss in disguise.

Image: Alfa.Gifs-Planet

In the scene, Jaime and Tyrion talk about their cousin, described as a "moron," who would mindlessly smash beetles for no apparent reason. The moment doesn't happen in the books and seems a bit out of place until you examine one major detail: The cousin's name is Orson.

Ender's Game author Orson Scott Card has been critical of the "Game of Thrones" show in the past, as seen in an unflattering review appearing on HatRack.com, one of the author's authorized websites. The theory online is that the beetle scene is a blatant dig at Card.

In addition to naming the cousin Orson, the story Tyrion and Jaime talk about seems to take a massive shot at Ender's Game, as one Redditor explains:

It makes fun of the entire sad premise behind Ender's Game, a story about a child (children really), who are crushing bugs in a hypothetical future for absolutely no known purpose - other than because the bugs 'started it first'.

So is this scene really slamming the Ender's Game author? The scene could obviously have many meanings. It could be meant for a brotherly moment, a look at the injustice in the world or even a foreshadowing of the results of Tyrion's trial by combat. Or perhaps, it could just be one of the most cleverly disguised disses ever.

Watch for yourself, and you decide.

This is why when it comes to zombies, you always need to go for the double tap.

The "Walking Dead" Season 5 finale is still fresh in our minds, but the cast and producers are already talking what's coming in Season 6. Though showrunner Scott Gimple is keeping secrets tightly locked away for now, actor Norman Reedus says he thinks the season is "going to be total chaos."

When we last saw the survivors, things were getting crazy. A number of them had near run-ins with death, and the new and improved Morgan made a triumphant return only to discover Rick Grimes blowing someone's brains out.

So where does the show go from there? For now, a lot remains a mystery, but as actor Andrew Lincoln says, "There's always gonna be blood."

"Saturday Night Live" kicked off its Taraji P. Henson-hosted episode with a sketch imagining how Hillary Clinton is getting ready to announce her presidential bid.

Clinton is expected to formally say on Sunday that she is jumping into the 2016 race. "SNL"'s skit showed the former secretary of state -- played by Kate McKinnon -- preparing to reveal the big news.

With the help of an assistant (Vanessa Bayer), Clinton attempted to seem relatable and humble in a video message to be posted on social media. "Personal and intimate? Yes, I better take off this jacket then," Clinton said as she stripped off a suit jacket, only to reveal an identical one underneath. "SNL" fans also got a nice surprise when Darrell Hammond appeared in the sketch to reprise his Bill Clinton impression.
