While orbiting around Earth on the International Space Station, American astronaut Terry Virts took a minute to pay fitting tribute to Leonard Nimoy, who died on Friday at 83. The late actor's home state of Massachusetts can be seen just to the right of Virts' Vulcan salute.

Nimoy, of course, will forever be known as Mr. Spock from the original "Star Trek" series. On Friday, NASA acknowledged how influential that show had been for generations of astronauts:

If we're going to keep it real, let's take it way back to when bedhead hair was simply referred to as "just had sex" hair. You know, that perfectly tousled look where your strands have just the right amount of volume and texture. That's exactly what Rosie Huntington-Whiteley had going on at the 2015 Vanity Fair Oscar Party.

The 27-year-old model/actress sizzled on the red carpet with her slightly disheveled, shoulder-length locks. It perfectly balanced out her glamorous green sequined dress.

Check out Rosie Huntington-Whiteley's messy hair below, and find out which other celebrity beauty looks we loved this week.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

What else can we say about Huntington-Whiteley's sexy party hair? We will point out that her winged eyeliner, bronzed cheeks and nude lipstick (hello, pillow soft pout!) add the finishing touch.

Solange Knowles

Before hopping on the 1s and 2s as the special guest DJ at the official Governors Ball After Party, Solange posed on the Oscars red carpet with her full-bodied curls, boyish brows, heavily lined eyes and bright red matte lipstick. She's doing Ms. Diana Ross proud, don't you think?

Lily Collins

Here's another party-perfect look modeled by Collins. Dressed in a menswear-inspired outfit, her piecey pixie haircut and smokey eye makeup is edgy yet soft.

Jada Pinkett Smith

Yes, Nick Jonas made our beauty list this week and for three obvious reasons: his hair is slicked-back to a T, his skin is moisturized like nobody's business and his five o'clock shadow gives us chills.

Melanie Griffith And Don Johnson Reunite For Dakota Johnson's 'SNL' Monologue

Dakota Johnson's stint as host on "Saturday Night Live" this week was the occasion for a little family reunion.

During her opening monologue, Johnson revealed that her father, Don Johnson, proposed (for the second time) to her mother, Melanie Griffith, after Griffith hosted "SNL" in 1988. Dakota, who was born nine months later, joked that she "must have been conceived that night after the show, or maybe even during the show."

But just to be sure, the "Fifty Shades of Grey" star had the opportunity to confirm with her parents, who were sitting in the audience. The former couple, who separated for the final time in 1994, haven't made a public appearance together in years, but reunited in New York to watch their daughter host.

Griffith and Johnson, who had been averting their eyes, conceded that the timeline was about right. When asked what was wrong, Johnson admitted, "We were just afraid you were going to be naked."

Griffith has avoided seeing her daughter's film, telling her in an uncomfortable interview on the Oscars red carpet last Sunday that "it would be strange" to see it.

Kanye West revealed the name of his upcoming album title on Twitter.

The 37-year-old announced Saturday that his new album, which has yet to get a release date, will be titled "So Help Me God." West tweeted the title along with a photo that is thought to be a 13th century monastic symbol for the Virgin Mary, according to Rolling Stone.

In an interview with Power 105 on Feb. 20, the "Bound 2" rapper told the radio station that the album is "80 percent" done, adding, "I'm trying to get it finished. I'm trying to get it to the people as soon as possible." He also hinted that the album will drop as a surprise instead of having a traditional release.

West debuted "All Day" at the Brit Awards on Wednesday. Other recently released tracks include his Paul McCartney collaboration "Only One," and "Wolves," featuring Sia and Vic Mensa.

Taylor Swift Calls Out Sexist Critics Again

Taylor Swift is focusing on herself right now.

The "Blank Space" singer recently opened up in an interview with The Telegraph, saying right now "love isn’t really a priority," and joked that she's going to end up like a single cat lady in five years' time.

When asked how she imagines her life at 30 years old, Swift said, "I’ll probably still be single, let’s be honest."

The Grammy winner went on to say how difficult it is to maintain a happy relationship out of the spotlight: "No one’s going to sign up for this and everything that goes with it. I don’t know what’s going to happen if I’m ever content in a relationship. I don’t even know if that’s possible with the life I have." But then she went on to joke that she'll probably end up locked up in her house, "surrounded by cats."

Beyond dating rumors, Swift is tired of people saying that she only writes music about man-hating, which has long been a critique of her songs. "There was a bit of a reputation for having a lot of boy-bashing songs," Swift said. "Which is a sexist way of saying heartbreak songs."

The singer previously called out critics last year for saying that she only writes about relationships, but not acknowledging that male musicians like Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran sing about the same things.

"They're all writing songs about their exes, their current girlfriends, their love life and no one raises a red flag there," Swift told Australian radio show "Jules, Merrick & Sophie."

William Shatner is facing some backlash since announcing that he could not attend Leonard Nimoy's funeral because of a commitment he made to a charity event in Florida. After the New York Daily News labeled Shatner "Captain Jerk" on its front page and others insisted that Shatner could have attended both events, the 83-year-old took to Twitter to fire back at his critics:

The actor invited his 2.11 million Twitter followers to remember Leonard Nimoy with a Twitter discussion on Sunday. He also released a statement expressing his grief. "I loved [Nimoy] like a brother," Shatner said. "We will all miss his humor, his talent, and his capacity to love."

Shatner and Nimoy starred as Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock, respectively, on the "Star Trek" television series and in multiple feature films together. Nimoy died Friday at his home in Los Angeles at the age of 83.

Will Smith's 'Focus' Tops Box Office With $19.1 Million

$

0
NEW YORK (AP) — Will Smith's con-man caper "Focus" dethroned "Fifty Shades of Grey" at the box office, but the film's modest $19.1 million opening still left questions about the drawing power of the once unstoppable star.

According to studio estimates Sunday, Warner Bros.' "Focus" easily topped all competitors on a weekend with little competition at North American multiplexes. In second place was the Colin Firth spy thriller "Kingsman: The Secret Service," which made $11.8 million in its third week of release. After two weeks atop the box office, "Fifty Shades of Grey" continued its steep slide, landing in fourth with an estimated $10.9 million for Universal Pictures. "Fifty Shades," which has made $486.2 million globally, fell just behind Paramount's "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water," which earned $11.2 million in its fourth week.

The weekend's only other new wide release, Relativity's horror film "The Lazarus Effect," opened in fifth place with $10.6 million.

But the weekend was largely seen, fairly or not, as a referendum on Smith's star power. "Focus," written and directed by the "Crazy, Stupid, Love" duo Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, is Smith's first film since 2013's "After Earth," the sci-fi flop in which he co-starred with his son, Jaden.

Smith has been frank about the sting of that film's box-office performance. "I can't allow the box-office success, or lack thereof, to determine my self-image," he said in a recent interview with The Associated Press.

But "Focus," made for about $50 million and co-starring Margot Robbie of "The Wolf of Wall Street," was never intended to be a summer-sized blockbuster. It had been predicted to make around $21 million.

"This is a mid-budgeted film with a result that matches," said Jeff Goldstein, head of distribution for Warner Bros., who added that winter storms accounted for a drop of $1-2 million. "There's no question we got hammered because of inclement weather in the South and the Midwest."

The R-rated "Focus," overwhelmingly appealed to adults, with 88 percent of its audience older than 25 — not a good sign for Smith's appeal to a new generation of moviegoers who weren't around for his triumphs in "Independence Day."

Nevertheless, there aren't many stars who could do better with a drama in late February. And "Focus" should play well internationally, where Smith's popularity remains strong.

"This still goes on his balance sheet as a number one debut," said Paul Degarabedian, senior media analyst for box-office data firm Rentrak. "He can still draw an audience, particularly with a film that's R-rated and not aimed at the young crowd."

Some of last Sunday's Oscar winners saw slight bumps at the box office.

Best-picture winner "Birdman (Or the Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)" added some 800 screens to bring in $2 million over the weekend, pushing its total past $40 million. "Still Alice," for which Julianne Moore won best actress, added 553 screens and earned $2.7 million. It's now made $12 million for Sony Pictures Classics.

"American Sniper," far and away the biggest box-office hit of the best-picture nominees, was also easily the top post-Oscars draw. It added another $7.7 million, to bring its cumulative domestic gross to $331.1 million.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Rentrak. Where available, the latest international numbers for Friday through Sunday are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "Focus," $19.1 million.

2. "Kingsman: The Secret Service," $11.8 million.

3. "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water," $11.2 million.

4. "Fifty Shades of Grey," $10.9 million.

5. "The Lazarus Effect," $10.6 million.

6. "McFarland, USA," $7.8 million.

7. "American Sniper," $7.7 million.

8. "The DUFF," $7.2 million.

9. "Still Alice," $2.7 million.

10. "Hot Tub Time Machine 2," $2.4 million.

Neil Patrick Harris Yells At Toddlers Over Thomas The Tank Engine In New Video

In honor of the 70th anniversary of Thomas the Tank Engine, Neil Patrick Harris has teamed up with Funny or Die to show how people can perhaps get a little too #ThomasObsessed. In the video, the actor takes his "tankie" fandom to the next level by losing his cool in a room full of toddlers. Harris explained to HuffPost Entertainment where that line between being enthusiastic and yelling at 6 year olds lies (since Thomas isn't actually blue):

nph

What made you interested in the project?
I have been trying to do something with Funny or Die for a while. Since, gosh, since back when we did "Prop 8 - The Musical". [Thomas] seemed like a great fit because my kids love "Thomas the Tank Engine." We’ve watched a lot of it. And so I thought the notion of sort of riffing on childhood obsessions with Thomas and their 70-year anniversary seemed like a potentially comedic match.

Were you always a tankie?
I was familiar with Thomas, but Gideon, our son, got understandably excited by trains when he was 2 or 3. I think many kids are. So I think, from trains, the next logical step is Thomas. And so we had videos playing constantly. They still watch it now. He’s moved onto "Avengers," but Thomas still chugs along. There’s no doubt.

I love "Avengers" so much. That is an awesome path to be on.
Agreed. Although, when he’s in Hulk mode and smashing everything and channeling his 4-year-old rage, I wish he were more like Thomas the Tank Engine and a little bit less like aggressive Hulk the Destroyer.

Can you be #TooObsessed with Thomas?
While knowledge of the minutia of Thomas is certainly welcome, the raising the voice, the shouting at people and getting too emotionally attached may be a little bit overkill. Yeah, I think making kids cry over the color of Thomas is probably not something to embrace.

True. But to be honest, he is cerulean.
He is cerulean. And how dare they not value the difference, the specificity. What do they think they are? 3?

How dare they, indeed. Do you agree, Thomas?

How Kelly Clarkson's Personal Happiness Led To Her Most Emotional Song Yet

$

"Piece by Piece" is Kelly Clarkson's first album of new original songs in four years, but don't call it a comeback. Since 2011's "Stronger," Clarkson has released a greatest hits collection and Christmas album and toured the country.

"I feel like, in the public eye, people perceive you being gone for four years," Clarkson told The Huffington Post. "Honestly, I've been working the whole time. Nothing has really changed. I still have the same busy schedule, I still have been doing the same stuff."

But what did change for Clarkson was her personal life. She married Brandon Blackstock in 2013 and became stepmother to his two children. In 2014, Clarkson and Blackstock welcomed their first child together, daughter River.

"I used to make jokes: Oh, shoot, I'm happy. This is going to suck for my creativity," Clarkson said. "But if anything, I've gotten 100 percent better. I didn't know this was going to happen. But after getting married and being a stepmom for a couple of years and then having River as well, everything just seems easier and just more fun. Having an eight-month old, you get to re-experience everything -- see how she experiences music and movies. I guess it helped everything. The word is peaceful. I know that sounds funny: first-time moms are usually like, 'I need a nap.' But I have a really great husband and really great support system. It's been awesome."

The result of that personal satisfaction is "Piece by Piece," a new album that is unmistakably Kelly Clarkson through and through. The hooks are big, her voice is booming and the lyrics are both personal and universal.

Take the title track, an emotional song that juxtaposes Blackstock with her father, who divorced Clarkson's mother when Clarkson was a child. The 32-year-old singer said "Piece by Piece" grew out of a conversation she had with her sister, where they discussed how their husbands were so supportive and loving -- a stark contrast, Clarkson noted, to the cliché about women with, in her words, "abandonment issues" dating losers.

"A lot of the reason why I wrote 'Piece by Piece' was I guess I didn't realize the gravity of the situation until I had a child of my own, and until I experienced love like I do with Brandon on the daily," Clarkson said. "I guess you don't realize something is missing until you feel it. I can't imagine walking away from my little girl. I can't imagine not having that love anymore. I didn't know it was missing because I never had it. It was a revelation and that's why I wrote that song. I think a lot of people go through that."

"Piece by Piece" is out on Tuesday.

'Boy Meets Girl' Director Eric Schaeffer Sounds Off On His Film's Tackling Of Transgender Issues

GLAAD's Claire Pires got a peek behind the scenes of "Boy Meets Girl," the hotly-anticipated new transgender romantic comedy, when she sat down for an in-depth interview with the film's director, Eric Schaeffer.

"I didn't want it to feel like we were watching a movie that was, first and foremost, a movie that was there to educate us," Schaeffer said of his film, which stars transgender actress Michelle Hendley. "It's just a regular, loving romantic comedy, but its lens is a new one."

He went on to note, "Powerful, smart women [who] also happen to be transgender women coming out in support of the film obviously makes me feel like we might have done something right."

"Boy Meets Girl" opened in limited release in February, and has received glowing reviews.

"The profoundly sensitive, often wryly funny look at friendship, romance, sexual attraction and gender identity carries themes and dynamics that feel as timeless as they do up-to-the-minute," Gary Goldstein of The Los Angeles Times wrote.

"You never know what you're gonna get what you see Bethenny." After months of anticipation, Bravo fans got a taste of Bethenny Frankel's return to "The Real Housewives of New York City" ahead of Season 7.

Frankel shakes things up for the ladies of "RHONY," including Carole Radziwill, Ramona Singer, Heather Thomson, Sonja Morgan, Kristen Taekman, LuAnn de Lesseps and new housewife Dorinda Medley. The Skinny Girl mogul was part of the Bravo reality series for Seasons 1-3, but left to pursue other ventures. Now, after a messy split from Jason Hoppy, and the cancellation of her talk show, she's starting over.

"I don't want the same life back," she says. "I want a new life."

News of Frankel's return was confirmed by Bravo in October.

"I'm genuinely excited, with a side of slightly nervous, for my return to 'The Real Housewives of New York City,'" she said in a statement to the network. "Bravo has always been the place on television where I have the freedom to be unfiltered, honest and inappropriate, with an audience who has been with me from the beginning. I can't wait to see what this next chapter brings for all of us. Watch what happens!"

"The Real Housewives of New York City" premieres April 7 at 9:00 p.m. ET on Bravo.

What It Would Look Like If The Dowager Countess Leaves 'Downton Abbey'

$

0
With the Season 5 finale of "Downton Abbey" on Sunday night, we said farewell to our vaguely high brow soap opera. It was a bumpy season, one that started off on fire and saw its way through more bigotry, marriage, eavesdropping and prison time for the Bateses. HuffPost Entertainment spoke with executive producer Gareth Neame to go over these last few years on the estate and find out what we can expect when the Crawleys move further into the 1900s come Season 6.

Thomas was as conniving as ever in these final few episodes. What's in store for him? Can you ever see him having a fully fleshed out, requited love interest?
Yes, it's very interesting to a modern audience, particularly to a younger audience to see a character like Thomas living that life all those years ago. It would be illegal and subject to execution. It requires secrecy and it's really interesting to explore that. He is stuck in a very unhappy place, as other characters are in different ways. Tom Branson is stuck in an uncomfortable place, because he is neither from the upstairs family nor is he now one of the servants. Edith is stuck because she's not married, she doesn't have the man she loved, she has a child. So many characters are placed in real extremes in the show and Thomas is one. I wouldn't rule out the idea that it would be love for him one day.

3215downton

Poor Edith. She's such a strong, feminist force in the show and yet, at least in terms of fan reactions, consistently unlikeable. Is that deliberate?
I don't think she's unlikeable, but I'm aware that some of the fans find her annoying and find some of the things that she does annoying. I think part of it is that she's so unlucky. Most people in life are evenly weighted between good and bad luck. In Edith's case, she just gets a lot of a latter. But let's hope that eventually things come around for her.

The love story between Mrs. Hughes and Carson has been such a slow-burn build up to last night's proposal -- and yet we haven't really even seen them on a proper date. Did you always expect their narrative to turn romantic?
It wasn't always a game plan from the beginning. It was more how the characters developed, and seeing how Jim [Carter] and Phyllis [Logan] play those roles, and getting a sense of what the audience enjoyed seeing from them. The thought was not always to have them as a married couple. We had that little flirtation between them at the end of the previous season. So, it felt right at the end of this season to have him pop the question.

Another major reveal from the finale was Anna's freedom. It seems her horrific rape storyline is on pause for now, though she is far from being tortured (and potentially imprisoned) by it.
I think what's important with her storyline is that we haven't just brushed it away in a couple of episodes and pretended that it never happened. She was clearly a victim with a rape perpetrated on her by a character who turned out to be very complex. And then he's gone. This has been a very big thing in their lives and the specter of Mr. Green still hangs over her and Bates. Although they have some respite and have been reunited, their problems are not through and they will be carried over into the next season.

joanne froggatt

Have mercy on the Bateses! How do you think about dealing with such violent subject matter? Where does the responsibility lie in dealing with fictional rape?
In a lot of stories on "Downton" we're showing how these people are surprisingly similar to us. Their humanity is basically identical, but the mores of society, the conduct particular to that environment is very alien to the way people alive today. I think that is true more so in the Anna rape storyline, where it would be a stain on her character for it to be revealed. That's a disgraceful thing to imagine, that one could be a victim of such a crime and still feel her own guilt. We know women do to this day around the world. They certainly did at that time.

There are some fan theories that Lady Mary killed Mr. Green. Anything to that?
That Mary killed Mr. Green?! I'm not sure it's terribly likely. [Laughs]

Oh, well. That would have been a fun thing: Lady Mary, the murderer. What does Season 6 look like for her? Henry Talbot really threw her love triangle off track.
Well, he left the show in the episode. I guess there's the sort of suspicion that maybe we will see him at some place in the future. But there's an awfully long way for that relationship to go. We know that Mary has taken her time in deciding where to settling down in the future, so we'll just have to see what happens there.

talbot

Now that Rose has been married off she'll be less of a presence. Lily James (Rose) has lent a lot of energy to the estate's dynamic. Where will that come from now that she's gone?
Well, the character isn't dead. The character is married off. And she's a cousin, she's a little more distant. But having said that, the important energy of the show is that you have a core cast as the heart of the show. Every season you have some new arrivals and some people departing. It's that turnover that makes it all feel very fresh. So, after having enjoyed her antics for a few years, it feels good that she's about to get on with her marriage. We'll see whether she comes back or others arrive. We have all that to look forward to.

And now Maggie Smith might be leaving.
Maggie has only ever been hired on to the show on a year-by-year basis and I haven't seen the interview, so I can't speak to that.

Fair enough. But, hypothetically, if you had to pick a way to send her off right now, what would you want the Dowager's farewell scene to be?
I think if we were unfortunate enough to have Maggie leave the show at any point then she will go off and live by the seaside, in case she ever changed her mind and decided to come back.
