Is Shampoo Better Than Conditioner? 'Billy Madison' Is 20 Years Old

$
0

It was 20 years ago today, in 1995, when everyone's favorite obnoxious man-child went back to school. In "Billy Madison," Adam Sandler's titular 27-year-old went back to school to repeat 3rd grade through high school in order to take over his father's hotel empire. Along the way, Billy hallucinated a giant penguin, gave possibly the dumbest (but best) Academic Decathlon answer ever and declared peeing one's pants to be the coolest.

But "Billy Madison" also left our culture with a significant conundrum about personal hygiene: What's better, shampoo or conditioner? Billy put the two hair products head-to-head in the legendary bathtub scene, positing that while shampoo goes on first and "cleans the hair," conditioner leaves the hair "silky and smooth." The question remains:

Neill Blomkamp's 'Alien' Movie Could Happen As Soon As 'Tomorrow'

Last month, "District 9" and "Elysium" director Neill Blomkamp released bunch of concept art from a secret "Alien" project he was developing to his Instagram account. "Was working on this. Don't think I am anymore," Blomkamp wrote of the art, which included looks at both Ripley (played by Sigourney Weaver) and Hicks (played by Michael Biehn). "Love it though."

Speaking to Uproxx in service of the forthcoming robot comedy "Chappie," Blomkamp revealed that the concept art was indeed from an "Alien" sequel, one that the franchise's parent studio, 20th Century Fox, wants to see happen very soon.

"Fox, they would make it. Like, tomorrow," Blomkamp said. "They would make it."

According to Blomkamp, he's the sticking point. "If it's going to happen, it has to be on my terms," Blomkamp said. "So, I came up with it and I'm bringing this to [them]. It's not like, 'Would you like to do Spider-Man 36'? I still love it, I love the idea of the movie and I produced way more art than I put out."

And while Blomkamp wouldn't reveal any details about the artwork -- for instance, why Ripley was wearing a Space Jockey helmet? -- he said there's a "high possibility" the film could still wind up becoming a reality.

"I'll decide soon," he said.

Head to Uproxx for the full interview. Check out Blomkamp's "Alien" artwork below.

Teen With Cancer Missed Meeting His Favorite YouTuber -- Until This Happened

When YouTuber Yousef Erakat heard one of his fans had to miss out on meeting him because of a chemo treatment, he decided to bring the meet and greet to him.

Known as fouseyTUBE on his channel, Yousef showed up at high school senior Mahmoud Badran’s house after meeting his sister at his comedy show who explained why her brother was forced to stay home.

Mahmoud, who was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma cancer four months ago, has watched Yousef's videos for years and aspires to be a YouTuber himself. When Yousef asked why he hadn’t started a channel, he explained he didn’t have the proper equipment.

This inspired Yousef to start an Indiegogo fundraising page. His goal is to raise $3,000 for video equipment for Mahmoud and $7,000 for his college fund. If his viewers reach the $10,000 goal, Yousef will match it and donate it to the American Cancer Society.

He also started a YouTube channel for Mahmoud and encouraged his 4.8 million subscribers to subscribe to it. Mahmoud has already posted his first video thanking Yousef and calling the whole experience "the happiest moment" he's had since being diagnosed.

First 'Fifty Shades Of Grey' Reviews Range From 'Half-Baked Excess' To 'Fascinating'

$

Unless you're Kim Kardashian, "Fifty Shades of Grey" reviews were embargoed until Wednesday morning. But when it rains corny sex dramas, it floods. After a couple of outlets published their reactions to the film, others followed suit, which gives us the opportunity to step back and let it sink in that some people do, in fact, like this movie. HuffPost Entertainment saw it Monday night, and while we haven't published any of our coverage yet, let's just say we weren't huge fans. Regardless, despite the sterilization of E.L. James' more graphic sex scenes and initial questions about whether Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan have any actual chemistry, we can report that it seems the record-breaking ticket sales will leave fans of the book quite satisfied. Here are excerpts from some of the first reviews:

1. "It’s a slow build to the smutty bits, and one that’s disappointingly devoid of tension. Even so, the movie is, by definition, a stronger proposition than the book because it strips away the oodles of cringe-inducing descriptions and internal monologue that tip the text heavily toward self-parody. Things grow more compelling once Grey whips out his nondisclosure agreement -- along with a nice Pouilly-Fumé, naturally -- and shows Ana his 'playroom,' expertly outfitted with state-of-the-art S&M gear." -- Sheri Linden, The Hollywood Reporter

2. "What Taylor-Johnson does best is balance atmosphere with action: Desks, benches, bathtubs and red leather beds are all creatively employed, as is camerawork designed to show us plenty of skin with just a few full-frontal revelations. Dornan, unfortunately, never evolves into anything more than a pretty face. But Johnson is a true find: She's so committed, she makes Ana's every discovery -- in or out of the bedroom -- convincing. Though the books always reflected the trilogy's roots as 'Twilight' fan fiction, the movie aims to give Ana, in particular, a story and identity of her own. She's smarter and sassier than her literary counterpart, while Christian, thank goodness, is less creepy-stalkerish." -- Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News

3. "Lifted from the first of E.L. James' wildly successful novels, which started as a form of 'Twilight' fan fiction, the movie plays strictly by the book -- which is hardly a compliment. Directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson from Kelly Marcel's screenplay, the considerable talent behind the camera and a modicum of considerable performances yield a few undeniable guilty pleasures, but most viewers will be seeking a safe word to escape this two-hour-plus mess of half-baked excess." -- Eric Kohn, Indiewire

4. "It’s a drama that can scarcely sustain one movie, let alone three, and as our heroine becomes ever more aware of just how dark Christian’s dark side is, 'Fifty Shades of Grey' starts to lose its sense of humor and elicit the wrong kind of giggles -- climaxing with a hilariously overblown S&M montage laden with so many slow-motion dissolves as to suggest that Ana wasn’t the only one wearing a blindfold during the assembly." -- Justin Chang, Variety

5. "Director Sam Taylor-Johnson had an impossible mission on her hands to meld the tawdry with the conventional. It's like trying to mash up the sensibilities of Lars von Trier with Nancy Meyers to create an end product that will be appealing on a mass scale. In trying to please everyone, though, 'Fifty Shades of Grey' has stripped away the fun and settled on palatable. There have been perfume commercials with more depth and story arc." -- Lindsey Bahr, Associated Press

6. "Sam Taylor-Johnson’s film becomes fascinating for the finesse with which she navigates the prudishness forced upon it. The director is capable of pivoting from romantic comedy to erotic drama at the whack of a flogger, her dexterity allowing the tepid sex scenes to be framed by a surprisingly sensitive story of self-discovery. Substituting heartache for handcuffs, 'Fifty Shades' is the rare studio romance in which the characters actually try to understand one another." -- David Ehrlich, Time Out New York

7. "Gone are the truly dreadful aspects of the book, and the biggest surprise may be that Ana and Christian have developed senses of humor. Still, the film never pretends to be other than what it really is: soft-core porn for the ladies, diluted with an 'R' rating." -- Sara Stewart, New York Post

8. "Grey is adequately played by Jamie Dornan, but he’s essentially a cipher for his thousand dollar watches, crisp ties and a fleet of Audis –- his lesser mode of transport when he doesn’t feel like using the helicopter with the word 'GREY' emblazoned on the side. But the real find in Sam Taylor-Johnson’s better-than-it-has-to-be adaptation of the risibly written and ludicrously popular softcore novel is Dakota Johnson. Reminiscent of only her mother Melanie Griffith’s best characteristics, Johnson’s Ana squeezes believability out of one of the more silly romantic entanglements in recent popular culture." -- Jordan Hoffman, The Guardian

9. "Free of full-frontal nudity and excessive thrusting and, well, orgasming as this movie is, it never gets to that envelope-pushing place. Which I suspect will disappoint many people, understandably. Oh well. Maybe I’m a sex-shaming prude, but I didn’t mind getting the less explicit version, because the movie is at its best when it keeps things swift and light." -- Richard Lawson, Vanity Fair

Russian Ballet Dancer Sergei Polunin Simply Slays Hozier's 'Take Me To Church'

What happens when you combine the talents of Russian ballet bad boy Sergei Polunin, Irish gospel luminary Hozier and photography pop wizard David LaChapelle? Apparently, a whole lot of angsty, sexy, beautiful dancing ensues.

LaChapelle directed the new visual interpretation of the Grammy-nominated hit, starring British Royal Ballet vet Polunin. The emotive dancer, donning only nude tights and a cluster of tattoos, sautés, tombés and pirouettes through an illuminated empty space. The white room clashes with the dark energy of the bluesy song, making Polunin's stunning dance moves resemble some kind of spiritual possession.

Enjoy.

Did Taylor Swift Try To Pressure Jay Z Into Getting Brunch Post-Grammys?

We all have that one friend who, during a celebratory night out, suddenly becomes fixated on making plans to get brunch the next day. "See you at noon!" he or she screams out of the window of a taxi, as you climb the steps to your fifth-floor walk-up, knowing full well that the only person you'll be getting up for is the Seamless dude who will deliver mozzarella sticks at 4 p.m.

On Sunday night, at a party for famous people the 2015 Grammy Awards, Taylor Swift was that friend.

As Gawker speculated, and as you can see in the video above, Swift asked Jay Z to brunch. Multiple times. Granted, the video doesn't have sound and we do not read lips for a living, but around 0:24, you can see the questioning begin. Which turns into a command. Jay Z nods, but we can't say he looks as enthused as she.

It's okay, Taylor. Lorde will probably go with you again:

The Joker Is Finally Coming To 'Gotham'

Let's put a smile on that face. After Monday's "Gotham," Fox released a preview for the show's next episode "The Blind Fortune Teller," teasing the highly anticipated arrival the city's next villain: the Joker. While the teaser didn't explicitly name the Joker, it did say that the new villain was "no joke" before cutting to a quick glimpse of Cameron Monaghan ("Shameless," "The Giver"), called Jerome on the show, maniacally smiling and laughing.

Fans have been waiting for the Batman supervillain to show up in "Gotham," and even speculated that Oswald Cobblepot could be the Joker. While that theory isn't true, we'll be seeing the Joker sooner than expected. "Gotham" executive producer Bruno Heller told TV Guide earlier this month that the Joker would appear before the end of the first season.

The episode, which airs next Monday, follows James Gordon's (Ben McKenzie) visit to the circus with Dr. Leslie Thompkins (Morena Baccarin) when it suddenly comes under attack. Jerome will apparently be at the circus, according to a new photo. Check out the image below and teaser above.

Vivica A. Fox Says 'Desperate' Kenya Moore Gets 'Rewarded For Bad Behavior'

Vivica A. Fox has not gotten over her "Celebrity Apprentice" beef with "Real Housewives of Atlanta" star Kenya Moore.

The pair squabbled throughout the series, and Fox contends that Moore stole her cell phone during the show and sent out a tweet about menopause, which Moore has denied. Fox told HuffPost Live's Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani on Tuesday that she's known Moore "for a very long time," but the "Housewives" cast member is "absolutely nothing like" the woman she once knew.

"Desperate times call for desperate measures, and she's been rewarded for bad behavior. I think what happens [is] it's like an addict -- they keep pushing, keep pushing, and she lives scandal after scandal. That's how she gets down," Fox said when asked how Moore has changed. "Myself, I do the work. I have talent, and I'm glad I get to go back to doing movies, doing legitimate projects that I produce and star in."

When Modarressy-Tehrani asked if Fox thinks Moore has talent as well, Fox sat still for several seconds and said, "And there we have it. Silence is in the room."

Jon Stewart will step down as host of "The Daily Show," he announced during Tuesday night's taping. Comedy Central confirmed the news in a tweet.

Stewart has been at the helm of the beloved satirical news program for over 15 years. He will continue hosting the show until later this year.

According to a tweet from CBS News, Stewart told fans he had felt "restless."

Comedy Central President Michele Ganeless released the following statement:

“For the better part of the last two decades, I have had the incredible honor and privilege of working with Jon Stewart. His comedic brilliance is second to none. Jon has been at the heart of Comedy Central, championing and nurturing the best talent in the industry, in front of and behind the camera. Through his unique voice and vision, ‘The Daily Show’ has become a cultural touchstone for millions of fans and an unparalleled platform for political comedy that will endure for years to come. Jon will remain at the helm of ‘The Daily Show’ until later this year. He is a comic genius, generous with his time and talent, and will always be a part of the Comedy Central family.”

Stewart joined "The Daily Show" in 1999, replacing Craig Kilborn. Covering topics such as the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, torture, CIA spying, and several presidential elections, he transformed the show into a powerful and respected voice in American media.

His hard hitting interviews--including one with President Obama in 2012--gained him credibility among viewers. He was even named one of America's most trusted news sources in a 2009 poll.

Stewart is also noted for his sharp criticism of cable news, particularly Fox News.

The show is Comedy Central's longest running program other than South Park. At its peak, "The Daily Show" boasted over 3 million nightly viewers. It has won 19 Emmy Awards, two Peabody Awards, and inspired three popular spin-offs: "The Colbert Report," "Last Week Tonight," and "The Nightly Show."

Stewart had previously taken a leave of absence in 2013 to direct the film 'Rosewater.'

The 52-year-old comedian began his career doing stand-up. His first show was 1987 at the Bitter End in New York City.

John Legend Disagreed With Kanye West's Comments About Beck

While John Legend found Kanye West's near interruption of Beck's Album of the Year speech "funny," the 36-year-old singer was not as amused by West's comments following the Grammys broadcast.

"When I said that was funny and people should lighten up about it, that's what I meant," Legend wrote on Instagram. "I wasn't referring to Kanye's comments after the show which I have now seen and heard. I disagree with those comments."

Speaking to E! after the Grammys broadcast, West said Beck "needs to respect artistry" and "should have given his award to Beyoncé." The rapper also criticized Grammys voters for "diminishing art, and not respecting the craft, and smacking people in the face after they deliver monumental feats of music."

"Beck is indeed a true artist's artist. He's a multi-instrumentalist, a creative and unique singer-songwriter whose music I have bought and enjoyed over the years," Legend wrote on Tuesday. "While his win may have been a surprise to many, it's not because he's not a great artist deserving of recognition. All of the other nominated artists, including Beyoncé, are incredible in their own right, and arguments could be made for any of them deserving to win. This is not an objective process. It's completely subjective, in fact. We can all debate who we thought should have won. But even if you didn't vote for him, plenty of our colleagues in the music business did. These voters are all creators who love music and have dedicated their lives to it, and the plurality of them chose Beck as the Album of the Year. I respect their decision and congratulate Beck on this outstanding accomplishment."

Read Legend's full statement below:

I want to clarify my thoughts on Kanye's actions at the Grammys on Sunday. First of all, Kanye is my friend. He believed in me years ago when very few did, and I wouldn't be here without his support. That doesn't mean we'll agree on everything, but it does mean that I am grateful to him. And I also believe he is one of the most gifted people I've had the privilege of working with. In my comments to US Weekly, I said that when Kanye walked up on stage, mimicking his interruption of Taylor Swift's VMA acceptance speech, then turned around as if he was just playing, most of the room including me saw this as funny, as a way of taking the piss out of himself for his infamous behavior several years ago. When I said that was funny and people should lighten up about it, that's what I meant. I wasn't referring to Kanye's comments after the show which I have now seen and heard. I disagree with those comments. Beck is indeed a true artist's artist. He's a multi-instrumentalist, a creative and unique singer-songwriter whose music I have bought and enjoyed over the years. While his win may have been a surprise to many, it's not because he's not a great artist deserving of recognition. I respect their decision and congratulate Beck on this outstanding accomplishment.

In addition to clarifying his comments to Us Weekly, Legend also used his social media presence to explain a photograph posted by West's wife, Kim Kardashian, immediately following Sunday's Grammys. In the pic, which Kardashian captioned, "This is the Beck won that award face?!?!?!" Legend looks surprised.

Solving Sexism on the Red Carpet

$
0
0
Ever since Anna Wintour began putting actresses and singers - instead of models - on the cover of Vogue, the relationship between Hollywood, fashion and the media world has been a love/hate/love again relationship. And that was even before the advent of Instagram.

On Sunday at the Grammy Awards telecast, Lady Gaga walked on the red carpet and didn't stop very often. She didn't speak very much. Although Gaga and her jazzy collaborator Tony Bennett did give a short interview to Ryan Seacrest, Gaga walked by Seacrest's E! colleague Giuliana Rancic without skipping a beat, totally ignoring the TV personality's high-pitched request for her time. Although the cold-shouldered gesture could be interpreted as a personal snub (as many celeb gossip blogs have), Gaga was just following a recent trend of major stars being highly selective of whom they grant interviews on the red carpet.

In fact, Seacrest was the only interviewer who seemed to score quick chats with some of the night's biggest celebrities, including Rihanna and Katy Perry. But not even Seacrest's magnetism could draw in the likes of Madonna and Beyoncé, who refused to open their mouths for the E! cameras. That's not to say that it was always easy for Seacrest to ask the "tough" red carpet questions. When he asked Nicole Kidman about which designer she was wearing, the actress looked visibly befuddled, and an awkward silence ensued. Kidman's only response after the terse moment was, "I don't know what to say."

The E! red carpet specials have been recently criticized for being insipid and borderline sexist with their zoomed-in focus on what female celebrities are wearing. The distaste has been pegged on the "mani cam," an E! award season red carpet gimmick where actresses get asked to "strut" their hands on a miniature red carpet to show off their manicures, nail color and borrowed jewelry. At the Screen Actors Guild awards in January, Julianne Moore, Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston all refused to do it, prompting a social media campaign, #AskHerMore, to encourage reporters to be more thoughtful when interviewing female stars.

Although #AskHerMore is clearly well-intended, the campaign is misguided in assuming that entertainment reporters don't know what they're doing. It's not as if Seacrest and his red carpet squad at E! believe they are sexist when they inadvertently reduce these lauded women to what they're wearing, but that's what the E!'s audience tunes in for. Perhaps more importantly, designers send celebrities these dresses with the intention of getting TV exposure. I used to believed that actresses were obligated and actually wanted to be asked who they were wearing, so they can name-drop the designer and continue a relationship for when they need a dress at the next televised award show.

Sexist or not, female celebrities are now instinctively tied to the fashion choices they (or their team of stylists) make. They may not have asked to be in that position, but the fact is that they are in that position. They can either choose to embrace it or forgo it altogether, but it's unbecoming to choose to be a fashion darling on magazine covers and then begroan being asked about their outfits. Natalie Portman can't pick up the phone when Christian Dior calls to ask her to be the new face of the fashion house and then keep her mouth shut whenever someone asks her who she's wearing on the red carpet.

"The red carpet is one of the only - if not THE only - arena in Hollywood in which women stand to profit more than men," wrote Jessica Goldstein on ThinkProgress, advocating for women to "take the money and walk" as a sign of female empowerment in Hollywood. "It's women who get the big-money partnerships with fashion houses, hair product lines, makeup brands and jewelry companies; women get the lion's share of awards show attention, buzz and press."

Of course, female celebrities have the option to decline red carpet interviews, offers to do fashion magazine spreads and an invitation to the Met Gala. In fact, I'm kind of surprised more haven't done so, considering the recent tenuous relationship with the pony and dog show that's celebrity culture. Just even a decade ago, appearing in magazines and TV shows was the only major way that stars could plug their projects to a mass audience. It made sense back then to put up with insipid questioning. Today, however, stars have a direct connection to the public with social media. Ariana Grande has three times as many Twitter followers as E! That's perhaps why she refused to give any red carpet interviews at the Grammys. Whatever she had to say or show she could have done it on the limo ride there.

While female music stars like Katy Perry and Rihanna dominate social media, actresses aren't as engaged in the social platform. Seven out of the 10 most-followed Twitter users are musicians while out of the top 20 half of them are female musicians. Katy Perry, for example, has close to 65 million followers. The most followed actress on Twitter is Emma Watson with 13 million, three million fewer than Pitbull. Other major actresses don't even break the one million-follower mark. Julianne Moore boasts half a million, while Reese Witherspoon only has 356,000. Respectable figures by all means, but a little disparate considering their A-list status. That's perhaps one of the reasons why actresses still are bound to participating in traditional media outlets.

It may be more effective for these actresses coming together to demand more thoughtful red carpet interviews to invest in their social media presence. That way they can take the reins and dictate the terms of public engagement. If Reese Whiterspoon had 15 million Twitter followers, she may feel less pressured to succumb to insipid questioning in exchange for plugging her next film.

And if for whatever reason she ever did want to show off her manicure, well, there is always Instagram.
