Ruth Wilson won the Golden Globe Award for best actress in a TV drama for her work on "The Affair."

Wilson plays Alison Lockhart on the Showtime drama, which finished up its first season in December. Alison is one half of the extramarital relationship at the heart of the show, whose story is told from the different perspectives of each if its participants. The actress beat out Claire Danes, Viola Davis, Julianna Margulies and Robin Wright for the title. Wilson was previously nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Mini-Series or TV movie in 2006 for her work in "Jane Eyre."

Earlier in the evening, "The Affair" took home the award for Best Drama Series.

Michael Keaton Wins Best Actor - Musical Or Comedy At 2015 Golden Globes For 'Birdman'

Michael Keaton won Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy at the 2015 Golden Globes for "Birdman."

Keaton plays Riggan Thomson in director Alejandro González Iñárritu's film, which tells the story of a washed-up Hollywood actor, known for playing iconic superhero Birdman, who tries to reinvent his career by directing and starring in a Broadway play. Keaton defeated Bill Murray ("St. Vincent"), Ralph Fiennes ("The Grand Budapest Hotel"), Christoph Waltz ("Big Eyes") and Joaquin Phoenix ("Inherent Vice") for the honor. This is his first Golden Globe award.

Many have considered "Birdman" the return of Keaton, referencing the "art imitating life" aspect of the film. In an excerpt from New York Times profile of Keaton, Iñárritu attributed the actor's Batman past -- he played the Caped Crusader in Tim Burton's "Batman" films -- as a major component in choosing him for the role:

"When I finished the script, I knew that Michael was not the choice or option, he was the guy,” said Mr. Iñárritu, the filmmaker known for “Babel,” “21 Grams” and “Amores Perros.” Mr. Keaton, he said, had the emotional range and Everyman charm to offset the moody, narcissistic Riggan. “He’s one of the few guys in the world who has worn that cape,” he continued, referring to the 1989 and 1992 “Batman” films. “The authority and the relatability that he gave, all those were essential.”

But when they met over dinner to discuss working together, “the first thing he said to me was, ‘Are you trying to make fun of me?’ ” Mr. Iñárritu recalled. Two bottles of wine later, he had gained Mr. Keaton’s confidence. The film, Mr. Iñárritu said, may fit Mr. Keaton, but it was inspired by the director’s own life.

Golden Globes 2015 Tweets From Women Prove Amy And Tina Should Host Forever

We'll admit, our Golden Globes countdown has been an emotional affair. As we prepared to watch beloved funny ladies Tina Fey and Amy Poehler host the ceremony for the third and final year, we relived some of our favorite moments, listened to Lionel Richie's "Once, Twice, Three Times A Lady" on loop and brushed up on some of the most badass women in entertainment this year.

This year, Poehler and Fey addressed the landslide of recent sexual assault allegations against Bill Cosby head on. They lampooned gender stereotypes while reminding us just how pervasive they are.

If this year's Golden Globes taught us anything, it's that women are dominating TV. Our small screens have been filled with women of color, young women, gay women, women with mental illness, transwomen, women with good intentions and women motivated by greed over the last year. Put simply, women make for great TV.

It has also been a historic year for women in film. Ava DeVurnay became the first African-American woman ever nominated in the Best Directory category for "Selma." Also nominated for Best Picture, "Selma" explores critical moments in the civil rights movement with increased attention to roles of women in one of the most important eras in American history.

Some highlights from the 2015 Golden Globes included:
--Amy and Tina listing the amazing credentials of Amal Clooney, whose husband George Clooney received the for the Cecil B DeMille lifetime achievement award. Finding such a remarkable woman to agree to marry you definitely a lifetime achievement. (Clooney seemed to agree.)

--"Jane the Virgin" star Gina Rodriguez taking home the award for Best Actress in a TV Comedy. She thanked showrunner Jennie Urman for "making me your jane." Women in Hollywood = more women in Hollywood.

--Benedict Cumberbatch photobombing Meryl Streep and Margaret Cho.

--"Transparent" creator Jill Soloway thanked her mother and transwomen and men everywhere, dedicating the award to the memory of Leelah Alcorn, an Ohio trans teen who committed suicide in December.

--Kristen Wig and Bill Hader proving they should definitely host the awards next year.

--Amy Adams celebrating strong female voices accepting the award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy.

--A man won a best actor award for playing a woman. Jeffrey Tambor accepted the award for Best Actor in a Comedy Series for his performance in the role of Maura Pfefferman in "Transparent."

--Jane Fonda joking that "It's nice that men at last are getting the recognition they deserve for being good at comedy!" as Lily Tomlin laughed along.

--Julianne Moore winning Best Actress in a Drama Motion Picture for "Still Alice," despite being told "no one wants to see a movie about an old woman," as she recalled in her speech.

--An honorary mention goes to the trailer for the third season of "House of Cards," which premiered during a commercial break. Because Robin Wright is so damn fierce.

J.K. Rowling Goes After Rupert Murdoch On Twitter

Author J.K. Rowling took to Twitter on Sunday to slam Rupert Murdoch for saying all Muslims "must be held responsible" for extremist violence such as last week's deadly attack on the headquarters of satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo.

On Friday, the News Corp boss said via Twitter that even peaceful Muslims are responsible for the "jihadist cancer."

On Sunday, the "Harry Potter" author linked to an article about Murdoch's comments and unleashed a verbal stinging jinx:

She didn't stop there. She also pointed out that the faith of her birth had a few flaws of its own and (sarcastically) took responsibility:

After the two zingers, she completed a Twitter hat trick by working some numbers into the argument:

If Murdoch has seen the tweets, he hasn't responded. However, on Sunday he tweeted in remembrance of a Muslim hero -- and victim -- in last week's attack:

Amal Clooney Was So Over The Lame Work Party Her Husband Dragged Her To

Amal Clooney (née Alamuddin) finally gave in and agreed to accompany new husband George Clooney to the 72nd annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, and she could not have been less impressed with Hollywood's drunkest night.

We don't really imagine the accomplished human rights lawyer is the type to normally sit at home in her PJs and watch the show on TV, yet she could barely hide her blasé attitude for, well, everything. Not that we blame her, since she had to put up with a lot.

First, she had to suffer through chatting with Ryan Seacrest, who thought he was being funny by presenting George with a T-shirt that said "GAME OVER" and featured a smiling bride and frowning groom.

amalryan1010

Then she had to put up with Giuliana Rancic, who unsuccessfully attempted to get the couple to do a shot of George's own brand of tequila with her.

Fortunately, we learned that Amal's side-eye game is strong.

She did allow herself to chuckle quietly at Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's astute observation that her husband is the one receiving a lifetime achievement award.

amallaugh

But when George wasn't professing that he was humbled by her love for him, girl was B-O-R-E-D.

You can tell she's just counting down the days until the Oscars.

Here's What You Need To Know Before 'Parks & Recreation' Returns

"Parks and Recreation" returns for its seventh and (sadly) final season on Tuesday night. It's a bittersweet feeling, but at least we'll get a double dose of the gang in back-to-back episodes each week.

Before you get too excited and jump right into the new episode, you'll probably want a refresher on where Season 6 left off. Here's what happened:

The Unity concert was amazing
tv show gifs
Image via Tumblr

The "Parks" gang pulled off an awesome Pawnee/Eagleton Unity concert with an impressive lineup of performers. Ginuwine, aka Donna's cousin, showed up to dedicate "Pony" to Lil Sebastian as a hologram of the beloved mini-horse popped up on stage. The Decemberists, Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, Yo La Tengo and Letters to Cleo also performed -- the latter much to Ben's excitement.

Duke Silver made an appearance
tv show gifs

This was EPIC, to say the least. And even better than Duke's playing smooth jazz notes were the faces made by Ben and Leslie when they realized who was behind the saxophone.

Mouse Rat reunited
mouserat

We, like every other Pawnee/Eagleton kid, love Johnny Karate, but Mouse Rat (formerly Scarecrow Boat) was where it all began. Andy got his wish to bring the band back together, and it was beautiful.

Leslie met Michelle Obama
tv show gifs
Image via Tumblr

We're not sure what was better, the First Lady making a cameo or Leslie's reaction to bumping into the First Lady in the hallway. Now that the FLOTUS and Joe Biden have made cameos, we can only expect/hope for the POTUS to show up this season, right? Make it happen, Michael Schur!

Leslie took the National Parks job
After nearly unending amounts of indecision, Leslie finally chose to take the job as the Midwest Regional Director of the National Parks Service. But she also figured out a way to stay in Pawnee instead of moving to Chicago (and thank god or else her quote on that statue would've been super awkward). Thanks to Ron remodeling the third floor of City Hall, Leslie was able to do her new job from her favorite city.

Oh wait, are we forgetting something else ... Hm something else important happened, right?

THREE YEARS LATER ...

2017

OH YEAH, "Parks" decided to skip THREE YEARS INTO THE FUTURE, and thus nearly give us a heart attack. In 2017, we see a very busy Leslie in action (and with bangs!) on the third floor of City Council.

tv show gifs

Image via Tumblr

Jon Hamm shows up, who Leslie fires because he is apparently a worse employee than Gary/Jerry/Larry/Terry (wow). We briefly meet Leslie and Ben's triplets (!!) who are being watched by April and Andy (who's still injuring himself). The family had to cancel a trip to South Dakota (why?), Ben is all dressed up for some mysterious event, and Leslie is in the middle of some sort of media lockdown. That's all we know. Hopefully, we'll get some answers -- and find out where Donna, Ron and Tom are in the Season 7 premiere.

The final season of "Parks and Recreation" premieres Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 8:00 p.m. ET on NBC.

5 Ways Patton Oswalt Got To Carnegie Hall (Practice Not Included)

$
0
0
Playing one of the most respectable theaters in the world is an accomplishment for any performer, but it's especially validating for a comedian. Everyone's heard the joke about how you get to Carnegie Hall, but not many comics ever get to tell jokes on its distinguished stage.

On Friday night, Patton Oswalt was able to do just that as he performed for a sold-out crowd of over 2,000 people. As you can imagine, he treated it very seriously:

Here are a few things you missed if you weren't there:

1. He gave this world-renowned venue what has to be its raunchiest opening act they've ever had.

"Carnegie Hall, I have a pussy!" greeted the inimitable Bridget Everett, a comedian after our own hearts in terms of her body positivity and untamable, burlesque-inspired comedy. After a solid set by comedian Myq Kaplan, who managed to get an upper class, midtown audience of varying ages to laugh at jokes about autism and pedophilia, Everett took things up a notch by appearing on stage in one of her signature, barely-there ensembles to sing a song with her two backup dancers Adam "Ad Rock" Horowitz and Carmine Covelli:

A photo posted by @bridgeteverett on

The song? That would be Everett's fabulously bawdy "What I Gotta Do?" which she both sang and prompted the audience to sing the rest of the titular question ("... to get that dick in my mouth?"). It's not what you typically hear at Carnegie Hall.

2. His new jokes were as varied and spirited as his previous albums, but with a new maturity. He's not the "angry young man" anymore.

Ever since the birth of his daughter and his 2011 album, "Finest Hour," Oswalt's material has become more thoughtful and introspective rather than lead by raw emotion. After joking about his frenzied, sweatpants-clad days as a new father on "Finest Hour" and "Tragedy Plus Comedy Equals Time," this is a man who has a handle on being a dad to his five-year-old daughter and feels comfortable wearing a dapper suit with a vest. You could also tell that this is a performer who just wrote his second memoir.

His Carnegie Hall set ranged from a spot-on story about the implausibility of the song "Little Drummer Boy" to his bit about wanting to play "the first dumb, gay best friend" to the poignant realization that even cool presidents (like Barack Obama) always come with something scary (like drones). Remember all that hilariously edgy stuff he had to say about politics and shitty rock music back in the "Feelin' Kinda Patton" days? Now, he internalizes that passion and gives it back to the audience in a more rational, perceptive way. He said he doesn't "hate" any type of music anymore, even Nickleback and Creed, but that doesn't mean he still can't do a great set about how ridiculous they are.

3. He was humbled by the venue and really used the stage -- as soon as he remembered that he could.

If it wasn't already obvious that playing Carnegie Hall was a huge achievement for Patton, he admitted on stage that if it came down to having one moment of his life play over and over again on a loop, it would be a tough choice between the day he met his wife, the day his daughter was born, and this show. He was gracious and engaged the audience members, especially the ones who paid to sit all the way up in the nosebleed section. At one point, he realized that he had been standing in the same spot on the massive, completely open stage with not set dressing and started walking around to explore the space. The wide, open stage came in handy for his bit about a creepy, half-assed clown who emerged out of the woods to perform at his daughter's friend's birthday party. At the end of his set, as the audience roared with applause, he simply laid down on the stage and stayed there for a minute, soaking it all in.

4. He proved that his daughter is only going to keep making him funnier as she gets older.

Patton may have a new comedy writing partner in his daughter, Alice. Some of his best jokes from Friday's show were about her hilarious behavior, including sending a "Sicilian message" to her BFF after she dared to insinuate that Alice's hair is shorter than hers (it is) and accidentally offending an elderly black man in a Starbucks all thanks to "The Lion King." His funniest story of the night had to be the one about accidentally showing his daughter a few seconds of a gory werewolf movie, then, not realizing that she wasn't afraid, spending the rest of the day trying to make her forget about it and accidentally terrorizing her with an episode of "Schoolhouse Rock," of all shows. His earlier jokes about the stress of parenting have been replaced by fascination with this little person and settling into the being a father who is often inspired by his daughter's humor.

5. He got a little help from an audience member to remember his encore joke.

Patton ended his set by walking off the stage and immediately returning for an encore, joking that only rock stars make people wait 10 minutes for the extra set. However, he did somewhat channel a rock star when he asked the audience, "What do you guys want to hear?" and listened to people yelling the names of popular bits ("KFC's Famous Bowl! KFC's Famous Bowl!") before finally settling on the "The Ham Incident" from "Finest Hour." The only problem? He couldn't exactly remember the bit, save for the "I want all the ham" sound bite that his fans love. Instead of bailing on the joke, he leaned down over the stage an allowed a man in the front row to whisper it into his ear and finished strong.

Now, that's how you do Carnegie Hall.

Gwen Stefani On Gay Issues And Why She Isn't Concerned With Gender Norms When It Comes To Raising Kids

$

Gwen Stefani tells PrideSource that "being unique and original is what makes me happy," and that mindset extends into her approach to parenting, too.

The 45-year-old No Doubt frontwoman described giving her eldest son, Kingston, a manicure in the interview, saying she just wants her kids "to be happy" and thus isn't concerned with gender norms.

She said:

I literally have 400 bottles of nail polish, so they took them all out and put them all over the bathroom. We really played "Salon" and we did tiger stripe nails. I said to Kingston, "Are you sure you wanna do pink, because you're gonna go to school tomorrow? Are you sure you're not gonna be embarrassed?" He said, "No, I don't care; it's a cool color."

I just love that. It's really important more than anything else to not be talked into something, to stand your ground and to be able to be strong about what you feel. That's what I like and that's what I want them to learn -- that being individual and being unique is important. Don't be scared of that. I don't want them to try to be like everyone else, and at that age, everybody just wants to have the same shoes everybody else has, and I don't really like that.

Stefani, who said the gay people she'd met throughout her music career had been "very creative people and people that have just been friends to me in a way that I haven't had in my life before that," also recalled a T-shirt she designed for Target with the slogan "Love Is Love."

"...Taking a stand was -- I mean, obviously I have my feelings about things, but I'm subtle about it," she said. Adding that she was too "shy to be politically active" due to her being a Libra and thus "all about balance," Stefani noted, "That shirt was not meant to be a big statement. It can work for that, but it doesn't have to be for that ... What I'm saying is that this shirt can work for anybody. It doesn't matter who you are, what you do and what you think -- love is love. Take it whichever way you want to take it."

Gary Oldman's Fourth Wife Alexandra Edenborough Files For Divorce

Gary Oldman is headed for his fourth divorce.

The "Dark Knight" actor's wife, jazz singer Alexandra Edenborough, filed for divorce in Los Angeles on Friday, according to People, citing "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the split. The pair married on New Year's Eve in 2008.

Edenborough, 36, has reportedly requested that Oldman pay spousal support as well as her attorney fees.

Oldman, 56, was first married to British actress Lesley Manville, with whom he has one son. After a brief marriage to Uma Thurman, the actor married Donya Fiorentino with whom he has two sons.

In a February 2014 interview with The Independent, the British actor mused on how ill-prepared he was for married life as a younger man.

“I’m not proud to say that, though," he told the newspaper. "I’ve had a few goes at it now, so I’ve probably learnt something from the first three ... Practice makes perfect. Isn’t that what they say? I’m not proud that this is my fourth marriage. But this is a good one. Hopefully, my last one."
