What Celebrities Should Know Before Performing for Dictators

$
0
0
The story repeats itself every few months. A dictator hires a pop icon to perform at a party or private event. Once exposed, the celebrity faces the ire of human rights activists. The celebrity either apologizes, claiming ignorance, or argues that he sang for the "people," not for the tyrant. Sometimes the celebrity justifies his actions with elevated rhetoric about the disadvantages of culturally isolating dictators.

The latest reiteration of this story involves American pop singer Erykah Badu. Badu traveled recently to Swaziland to celebrate the birthday of King Mswati III, the country's long-time dictator and Africa's last absolute monarch. She sang "Happy Birthday" to the king and presented him with gifts. "All the people were smiling when I sang," she tweeted afterward. "I smiled. We all felt good in that moment."

But not everyone did. While Badu and her royal friends were enjoying themselves, the police arrested seven Swazis for wearing t-shirts with messages deemed offensive. The arrests took place in front of the country's High Court, not far from where Badu was performing. A group had gathered there to support journalist Bheki Makhubu and human rights lawyer Thulani Maseko, both recently imprisoned. Their crime? Criticizing the kingdom's judiciary system.

The arrests surprised no one in Swaziland. King Mswati has been systematically crushing dissent since he took power 28 years ago. A wide range of reports documents the regime's myriad of human rights violations, including severe restrictions on freedom of speech and assembly, a ban on political parties, and systematic harassment of the opposition, including torture, beatings and disappearances. The country also suffers a grave HIV/AIDS epidemic, and poverty afflicts more than half the population. Meanwhile, Mswati travels in private jets and limousines. He is suspected of having foreign bank accounts worth billions.

Yet Badu is just one among many celebrities who have propped up human rights abusers like Mswati. Last year Jennifer Lopez came under fire for her paid performance at a birthday party for Turkmen dictator Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. Hilary Swank, Jean-Claude Van Damme and violinist Vanessa-Mae faced a similar backlash when Chechen strongman Ramzan Kadyrov paid them to attend a celebration in Grozny in 2011. Sting endured criticism of his performance at a festival staged in 2010 by the daughter of Uzbek dictator Islam Karimov. And Mariah Carey, Beyoncé and Nelly Furtado had to publicly apologize after the media reported they had received millions of dollars to perform at parties organized by the Gaddafi family in Libya.

The litany of human rights abuses by these dictatorships is easily available online. They all restrict independent media, political party activity, and freedom of expression and assembly. They all wield state violence against dissent. And some of these dictators seem out of a magical realist novel. Turkmenistan's regime last year reportedly ordered an Internet lockdown to prevent its citizens from viewing a video of the president falling off a horse. Kadyrov has tortured adversaries with his own hands. Karimov has been accused of boiling his enemies and conscripting armies of children to pick cotton by hand.

So why do so many celebrities do business with these despots? The reason is simple: money. Dictators can spend their country's wealth at their discretion. Unlike democratic leaders, they face no checks or balances. They can silence or marginalize media outlets that expose corruption and their lavish lifestyles. And while they might deride the US political system and foreign policy, they often are fascinated by American celebrities. Besides, they know that associating with celebrities lends a patina of legitimacy to their tarnished reputations.

For celebrities too, the association is tempting. Dictators offer them deals that few can offer: high-reward transactions for little work. It's not hard to imagine relatively decent people accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars (or more) to assist at a single event or perform at a birthday party, even if the money comes from a dictator. Even wealthy celebrities are no exception.

However, Badu's case is another reminder of the risks of such deals. Doing discreet business with a dictator has become increasingly difficult, thanks to camera phones and social media. And on the Internet, past is present. Mistakes made years ago live online forever. If you are reading this, you are a click away from watching embarrassing videos of Van Damme declaring his love to Chechnya's dictator or Lopez singing "Happy Birthday" to Turkmenistan's leader. And new scandals revive old ones.

Human rights defenders have made the best out of this situation. True, activists would rather see actors and singers use their celebrity for good causes. But if performers do the opposite, activists can exploit the public's obsession with celebrity to throw some light on gruesome human rights violations by dictators whose unpronounceable names are virtually unknown abroad. The wide readership of People magazine and Us Weekly learned about Turkmenistan's dictatorship, thanks to Lopez. Even more-serious publications can fall for the allure of celebrity-related news. For a human rights activist, Badu's performance probably represents a more effective way to expose the crimes of the Swazi regime than does the publication of comprehensive human rights reports.

In this respect Badu is partly right. When called out for her actions on Twitter, Badu criticized activists for using her to advance their "agenda." Activists surely do this. But there is nothing wrong with that -- if their agenda is defending human rights.

'Neighbors' Parties Its Way To The Top Of The Weekend Box Office

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Seth Rogen and Zac Efron have bested the web-slinger at the box office.

Rogen and Efron's family-versus-fraternity comedy "Neighbors," was the top draw for moviegoers this weekend, unseating last week's champ, "The Amazing Spider-Man 2." The R-rated "Neighbors" debuted with $51 million in ticket sales, pushing Spidey to second place with $37 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

"Sustaining a No. 1 ranking is generally tougher in the summer than any other time of year," said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for box-office tracker Rentrak. "You don't expect a comedy to be able to unseat an epic blockbuster, but historically it happens more than you think."

R-rated comedies have traditionally found success in the summer movie season: Think "Bridesmaids," ''The Hangover," 2012's "Ted" and last year's "The Heat."

"Neighbors" stars Rogen and Rose Byrne as new parents finding their footing in the suburbs when a fraternity led by Efron moves in next door. Filled with goofball and gross-out gags balanced with a dash of heart, the comedy boasts some epic party scenes and ample shirtless Efron.

The Universal release earned a "fresh" rating from review aggregator RottenTomatoes.com, with 74 percent of film critics responding favorably to the film. Conversely, Sony's "Amazing Spider-Man 2" earned a "rotten" rating of 54 percent.

Spidey is still a major success, with more than $550 million in worldwide ticket sales so far.

"Spider-Man has nothing to worry about," Dergarabedian said.

Another comedy, the Cameron Diaz-Leslie Mann revenge romp "The Other Woman" held onto third place in its third week of release, adding $9 million to its take. "Heaven Is for Real" and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" round out the top five.

Eminem's Spike Lee-Directed 'Headlights' Video Is The Perfect Mother's Day Tribute

It's only fitting that Eminem decided to release the video for his song "Headlights" on Mother's Day. The track, which features Nate Ruess and appears on Eminem's most recent album "Marshall Mathers LP 2," is basically an open letter to his mother, Debbie Mathers, apologizing for the hatred-filled lyrics he has directed at her since his career took off in the late 1990s. Despite all that, Eminem makes clear in the song, he still loves her. Sample lyric: "Did I take it too far?/ 'Cleaning Out My Closet'/and all them other songs/But regardless I don't hate you 'cause/Ma, you're still beautiful to me/'cause you're my mom."

Directed by Spike Lee, who hasn't shot a music video since Michael Jackson's "This Is It" in 2009, the majority of the clip is shot from the first-person perspective of Eminem's mother, interspersed with video clips and photo album pictures from Eminem's youth. The video climaxes with the rapper and his mother meeting on his driveway for a heartwarming embrace. Watch the touching video below.

Watch That Stunning 'Creation' Scene From 'Noah'

For those who haven't seen Darren Aronofsky's "Noah," there is one scene in which the titular character (Russell Crowe) recants the Christian creation story. While the words match up to the bible, the visuals paint a slightly different story. The construction of the universe nods to the Big Bang theory and shows Darwinian evolution from fish to primates through single picture clips that simply blow the mind. However, once primates emerge, a space is provided, and then humans -- Adam and Eve -- appear as some sort of light beings who then eat the forbidden fruit. While there is no telling what Aronofsky's message is through this combination of ideas, it is, at the very least, one of the movie's most stunning bits. Also, Aronofsky fans should keep an eye out for an easter egg from "The Fountain" around the half-minute mark.

Kanye Gives Kim A Literal Wall Of Roses For Mother's Day

Today is Mother's Day. But, much more importantly, today is Kimberly Noel Kardashian's first Mother's Day. To commemorate this crucial stamp on the timeline of maternal history, one Kanye West has given Kim a literal wall of roses.

Obviously, there are a lot of roses in this particular rose wall. There are some peonies and hydrangeas as well, and overall it's very beautiful! But, if were are going to shape a mass of flowers into something that is not a bouquet, is there not a more creative option? Maybe they could be molded into a sculpture of North West or possibly an even bigger rose. To be fair, as this rose wall stands, it is the ideal backdrop for selfie taking.

China Plays Kenny G's 'Going Home' On Loop Every Single Day At Closing Time

"If you go to Tiananmen Square, or go to any public area in China, you will hear my music at some point," Kenny G told The Huffington Post back in January. We hadn't grasped the seriousness of this statement until now.

In a New York Times article from May 10, China revealed a long-standing love for Kenny G's 1989 hit "Going Home." "Every day, 'Going Home' is piped into shopping malls, schools, train stations and fitness centers as a signal to the public that it is time, indeed, to go home," New York Times' Dan Levin writes. Asked why the song has been looped for the last hour and a half of each day since 2000, the manager of a famous antiques market responded, “Isn’t it just played everywhere?”

There's no explaining the song or Kenny G's popularity in China. Kenny G himself has no idea why he's adored, but he's more than content to "leave some of the mystery." All he knows is that when he performs in China, he makes sure to save "Going Home" for last.

The 'Game Of Thrones' Characters Texting Is The Best Thing Ever

Why You Missed That Easter Egg On 'Game Of Thrones'

"Game of Thrones" is the show that keeps on giving.

Each week, viewers tune in to the HBO drama for political intrigue, copious amounts of nudity, sex and violence and, of course, for the dragons. But one of the most underrated aspects of the show is the one you should start paying more attention to: the different languages of the Seven Kingdoms.

Although it's become apparent that English is the "Common Tongue" in Westeros, plenty of characters on the show deliver some of their best lines trippingly off the foreign tongue. And while it's pretty to listen to the varying dialects spoken, and we're usually left gawking at the TV screen every time Emilia Clarke fierily utters those guttural Dothraki commands, we tune out when the need for closed captioning does arise. But resident "GoT" linguist David Peterson warns fans that ignoring the languages on the show is a big mistake.

Peterson, who has created 5,000 or so words for George R.R. Martin's series revealed he's left a few hidden gems for those observant enough to find them. In the third episode of this season, Dany makes known her plans to conquer the city of Meereen and free all enslaved, but before she can do that, a fight must take place. While you were probably paying attention to the now fully bearded actor portraying Daario Naharis and fist-pumping the Mother of Dragons' victory, you might not have noticed the carefully placed "Monty Python" reference Peterson injected into the scene.

"There's a scene where the Meereenese rider is challenging Daenerys' champion. He's shouting and Nathalie Emmanuel [Missandei] is translating –- but she's not translating what he's saying," Peterson said. "He's actually saying a Low Valyrian translation of the French guy's insults in 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail.' That was [series creator] Dan Weiss's idea and it was so hilarious that I had to do it."

Peterson also explained how he creates the languages on the show, including Dothraki and High Valyrian -- the names of his wife and beloved cat serve as muses for words in both -- and shared his High Valyrian Handbook with fans so that they can try their tongues at the different dialects. Viewers can now study both the written and audio versions of some of the most common sayings in the Seven Kingdoms -- everything from "You know nothing, Jon Snow" to "A Lannister always pays his debts" is included in the tutorial.

So the next time you order pigeon pie, try doing it in High Valyrian: Tolī rhūqo lōtinti, kostilus.

It Doesn't Get More '90s Than This 'Oprah' Episode Devoted To The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

On one totally tubular, very strange day in 1990, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles took over Harpo Studios for an entire episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show."

Before an audience of mostly 6- to 10-year-olds, plus one adult woman wearing a full-on TMNT costume, actors wearing denim-vested turtle suits portraying Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo spent the hour being interviewed by Oprah -- whom they call "babe" -- taking questions from their young fans and dancing to prerecorded songs off their (somehow) double-platinum, Pizza Hut-sponsored album "Coming Out of Their Shells."

The whole bizarre scene plays out in a video posted Sunday to YouTube by New York-based comedy writer Brett White.

Actors portraying television reporter and turtle buddy April O'Neil ("not bad for a girl," according to the turtles) and, yes, the evil Shredder ("like a bad can opener") also made appearances in the episode.

The turtles' revealed their three favorite flavors of pizza -- pepperoni and jelly bean, peanut butter and tuna fish, and extra cheese and Jujubes -- before ending one of Winfrey's 14 "most unlikely" episodes with an on-stage, Oprah-inclusive dance party to "Pizza Power."

Cowabunga, dudes! This happenin' clip is totally worth your time.

The On-Set Celebration With Larry Kramer That 'Gobsmacked' The 'Normal Heart' Cast

The cast of HBO's "The Normal Heart" joins HuffPost Live's Ricky Camilleri at 10:50 a.m. EST on Tuesday, May 13 for a frank conversation about the AIDS crisis of the 1980s and their adaptation of Larry Kramer's iconic play.

In the interview, taped Monday, cast members Julia Roberts, Mark Ruffalo, Jim Parsons, Taylor Kitsch, Matt Bomer and director Ryan Murphy shared the joyful story of being on set on the day the Supreme Court ruled the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional. Murphy explained that the cast got the news while shooting a scene with a huge group of extras, many of whom were gay and lesbian, and the euphoria was made even sweeter by the presence of "Normal Heart" playwright and gay activist Larry Kramer.

the normal heart

"Larry Kramer was well enough to come on that day, and he got to have a microphone and he got to say the words 'we did it' to the crowd, and that was just so moving and so beautiful that he got to have that moment," Murphy said. "That he got to live to see that was very emotional and powerful."

The cast agreed. Jim Parsons said the serendipity of shooting a triumphant scene from the film on the same day Kramer could lead the charge in celebrating in a real-life victory was surreal.

"It was moving, but I'm more gobsmacked that life worked out that way and I was fortunate enough to be standing there that day," Parsons said.

Julia Roberts described the experience most succinctly: "If you saw it in a movie, you wouldn't believe it."

The wide-ranging HuffPost Live interview includes intimate details from the "Normal Heart" production, including Matt Bomer's 40-pound weight loss and why Murphy decided to air the film on HBO rather than through a theatrical release.

Aaron Paul's one-year wedding anniversary is just around the corner, so the actor decided to let us all in on what the first year of married life has been like (hint: it's awesome).

"Marriage is the greatest thing that has ever happened. Look how cute she is," the actor told People magazine at the Open Hearts Foundation's 4th Annual Gala where his wife, Lauren Parsekian, was being honored for her work on the anti-bullying Kind Campaign.

"I couldn't be more proud of her," he said. "I feel so blessed to be able to share this evening with her -– let's be honest, I feel blessed to share any evening with her."

Of course, Aaron Paul being Aaron Paul, he didn't stop there: "The back of my head hurts from smiling so much," he added. "I always sit back and applaud her on a day-to-day basis. It's nice to see everyone else applaud her tonight."

Yup, he's still got it.

On "Blended" costar, Drew Barrymore...

Casey Kasem's Safety In Question After Ailing Radio Personality Is 'Removed' From The Country

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A judge on Monday ordered an investigation into the whereabouts of Casey Kasem after an attorney for the ailing radio personality's wife said the former "Top 40" host had been removed from Los Angeles without his children's knowledge.

Superior Court Judge Daniel S. Murphy ordered a court investigator and adult protective services to find out where Kasem is being treated and report back to the court. Kasem, 82, suffers from advanced Parkinson's disease, can no longer speak and has been in various medical facilities chosen by his wife, Jean Kasem. Casey Kasem's children have complained that they have been unable to see their father in accordance with an agreement with their stepmother. Daughter Kerri Kasem had sought a temporary conservatorship and was appointed her father's temporary caretaker on Monday. Her attorney, Troy Martin, said the family believes the entertainer has been taken to an Indian reservation in Washington state.

Murphy's order came after Craig Marcus, an attorney who appeared on Jean Kasem's behalf at Monday's hearing, said he did not know where the radio personality was but that he was "no longer in the United States."

The revelation brought stunned protests from Murphy and two of Casey Kasem's daughters, two of the entertainer's three children from a previous marriage.

"I have no idea where he is," Marcus said.

"Your statements concern me even more," the judge told Marcus, who declined to comment after the hearing.

Marcus said in court that Jean Kasem had every right to move her husband as she saw fit. He argued that Murphy no longer had jurisdiction over Casey Kasem because he had been moved, but the judge rejected the argument.

Murphy appointed a doctor to look into Casey Kasem's care and ordered a court-appointed attorney to find out his whereabouts as soon as possible.

Casey Kasem gained fame with his radio music countdown shows, "American Top 40" and "Casey's Top 40," and was the voice of Shaggy in the cartoon "Scooby Doo."

As temporary conservator, Kerri Kasem will have access to her father's medical records and other reports that have previously been sealed by court order.

Kerri Kasem's case is the second one opened by one of the former host's children to try to gain access to their father and have some oversight over his care. A previous case by daughter Julie Kasem was dismissed after she reached a settlement with her stepmother, but the daughter said Monday that agreement has been breached.

In a court filing last week, Kerri Kasem's attorneys wrote that the entertainer has been repeatedly moved without warning and his children have been unable to see him. The complaint accused Jean Kasem of elder abuse by isolating her husband from his family.

"We've been troubled for a long time," Kerri Kasem said after Monday's court hearing. She said Murphy's orders will ensure that the truth about her father's care comes out.

"Justice has been served today," she said.

Standard Hotel Investigating Leaked Solange And Jay Z Fight Video

NEW YORK (AP) — The Standard Hotel in New York City says it is investigating the leak of a security video that appears to show Beyonce's sister, Solange, attacking Jay Z.

Asked about the video on Monday by The Associated Press, the hotel issued a statement saying it is "shocked and disappointed that there was a clear breach of our security system." TMZ posted the minute-long video Monday and said it was shot last week inside a Standard Hotel elevator. It appears to show Solange attacking Jay Z in Beyonce's presence. A security guard intervenes. There is no audio.

The hotel says the leaked video violates the confidentiality it provides customers.

"We are investigating with the utmost urgency the circumstances surrounding the situation and, as is our customary practice, will discipline and prosecute the individuals involved to our fullest capacity."

The celebrity site posted a longer, three-minute version of the video later Monday. Representatives for Beyonce, Jay Z and Solange didn't immediately reply to emails seeking comment.

The footage shows the performers in the outfits they wore to the Met Gala last week.

Jay Z, 44, and Beyonce, 32, were married in 2008. They will kick-off their co-headlining "On the Run Tour" on June 25 in Miami.

Solange, 27, recently performed at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, where Beyonce joined her onstage.
