Bill Maher Argues For Privacy, Free Speech In Wake Of Donald Sterling Scandal
"Last week when President Obama was asked about the Sterling episode, he said, 'When ignorant folks want to advertise their ignorance, just let them talk.' But Sterling didn't advertise," Maher explained, "He was bugged. And while he may not be worth defending, the 4th Amendment is."
It's a difficult point to make, given the collective outrage that sprung up once Sterling's comments were broadcast. Maher's studio audience broke into fewer rounds of applause during the segment than is usual for one of his New Rules. But as the host laid out his argument that we need to maintain the ability to speak our minds in private, he seemed to win them over.
In response to a Washington Post op-ed by Kathleen Parker which suggested you, "Say what you will, but you'd best check for recording devices... [or] check your thoughts," Maher chafed, "I'd rather be a Mormon."
He went on to sum up Parker's sentiment: "So let me get this straight, we should concede that there's no such thing anymore as a private conversation, so therefore remember to 'lawyer' everything you say before you say it, and hey, speaking your mind was overrated anyway, so you won't miss it. Well, I'll miss it, I'll miss it a lot."

Undocumented Mom Has A Mother's Day Message For Congress (VIDEO)
In a clip from the recently released film "Documented," by journalist and immigration rights advocate Jose Antonio Vargas, an undocumented mother from Argentina with two sons aged 18 and 20 says what she'd like to tell Congress and the president if she had the chance.
I would ask them, "What do you see when you look into your children's eyes? It's the same thing that we see in our children.
The mother has lived in the United States for 14 years and both she and her husband are undocumented, according to Vargas.
A policy adopted in 2012 by the Obama administration exempts most young people who entered the country illegally as children from deportation and extends work authorization for a renewable two-year period. That policy, referred to as DACA, likely applies to her children, but not to herself or her husband.
President Barack Obama has faced mounting criticism from immigrant rights activists over a record-setting pace of deportations widely criticized for separating families.
Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter and former Huffington Post editor Vargas came out as an undocumented immigrant in a 2011 New York Times Magazine article, and has since then devoted his time to telling stories about immigration aimed at humanizing the undocumented and informing public debate about immigration. The new documentary tells his own story of undocumented life in the United States against the backdrop of the stalled immigration debate in Washington.
"Documented" opened in New York this month and continues to screen across the country, most recently opening on Friday in Los Angeles and Tempe, Arizona.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this post stated the title of Vargas' film was "Undocumented." It has been updated to reflect that the film is actually titled "Documented."

'And So It Goes' Trailer: Michael Douglas And Diane Keaton Are This Summer's Rom-Com Duo
Mark Andrus ("As Good As It Gets," "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood") wrote the script. Frances Sternhagen and Frankie Valli (as in Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons) have supporting roles. "And So It Goes" (no connection to the Kurt Vonnegut adage, as far as we can tell) opens July 22. Watch the first trailer below.

Summer Movies Like 'Neighbors,' 'Wish I Was Here' Focus On Transition From 20s To 30s
But what about the often more complicated progression from our 20s to 30s? There have generally been fewer of those treatments on the big screen — that is, until now. This summer, charming indies and raunchy comedies — including this weekend's "Neighbors" — explore what could be one of life's most challenging decades, but always with humor and also some surprising box office potential for studios.
While the 30s can be a satisfying time, full of firsts like marriage, buying a home and having children, the period can also bring tough crossroads both personally and professionally.
Yet films like "Neighbors" and the upcoming "Happy Christmas" and "Wish I Was Here" highlight the humor in common 30s plights while offering everyday relevancy to audiences in that age group.
In "Neighbors," a couple (Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne) and their newborn baby buy their first house, but their life is disrupted when a fraternity (led by Zac Efron) moves in next door.
"Yes, there are ridiculous, outrageous jokes," says Dave Karger, chief correspondent of movie ticket-seller Fandango. "But there's also real poignancy there and very relatable characters in their 30s."
In "Happy Christmas," due in July, an irresponsible 20-something (Anna Kendrick) moves in with her 30-something brother (Joe Swanberg), who has a 2-year-old with his wife (Melanie Lynskey), a stay-at-home mom who starts writing a trashy novel to ease her boredom.
A decade after Zach Braff tackled tragedy as a 20-something in "Garden State," he portrays love and loss in his 30s in July's "Wish I Was Here," which follows a struggling actor (Braff) who must homeschool his two kids after his father's cancer worsens and he can no longer afford private school. Kate Hudson plays his wife, a woman who hates her job, but must stick it out to provide for her family.
"What that age group is going through, it's not just a wacky high school night out or a college first love," says Karger. "The particular themes, like an early mid-life crisis, are really interesting."
Character-based films have never been an easy sell for studios or audiences, notes Karger. "The main audience that you think of at the theater is teen boys and 20-somethings."
But the 25 to 39-year-old demographic actually makes up the largest amount of frequent moviegoers.
In 2013, they equaled 23 percent of those who go to the movies more than once a month, according to the 2013 Theatrical Market Statistics Report by the Motion Picture Association of America. This age group was also highest in both 2011 and 2012.
Other films targeted for the 25-39 demo this summer include "Blended," starring Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler; "Begin Again," with Mark Ruffalo and Keira Knightley; and "They Came Together," featuring Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd.
Though they won't tally as much as the superhero flicks, films targeting 30-somethings can be among the most profitable because they don't cost as much to make.
Additionally, "the good ones have a long shelf life," says Alex Ben Block, senior film editor of The Hollywood Reporter. "With classic movies of the genre like 'When Harry Met Sally.,' 'Sleepless in Seattle' or 'Bridget Jones's Diary,' you got a pretty good run in the theater and then in home video, DVD or digital."
But initially, they're often hard to market. It's key, says Block, for studios to do a lot of screenings to ignite buzz — and hope for rave reviews, because people in this group still read reviews and are affected by them.
The stars' likability and familiarity also matter, adds Block. "This audience is sophisticated. They aren't going to the movies just to go."
If "Neighbors" dominates on its opening weekend as expected (projections have it making nearly $50 million), could the studios' view of these types of films change?
"Three years ago 'Bridesmaids' was a smash and now this summer there are all of these hard R-rated comedies," says Karger. "It takes about two or three years to see the effect of a game-changing movie. If 'Neighbors' becomes this smash, then I think there will be more of an appetite at the studios for films of this type."

Kim Kardashian Wears All White To Her Bridal Shower In Beverly Hills
Shutterbugs from the photo agency X17 Online caught the reality star in a strapless white dress, pearls and silver heels. Her mother, Kris Jenner, also wore all white.
On Friday, Us Weekly posted what they claim to be the official wedding invitation of Kardashian and fiance Kanye West. The gold-embossed black invite calls for black tie attire and reveals a 6 p.m. dinner, but does not state an exact location. "Guests won't know the venue until they get to Paris," a source told the publication last month.
Kardashian, 33, last celebrated a bridal shower in 2011 before she married Kris Humphries. The July affair took place at her mother's Calabasas home and Demi Lovato, Serena Williams, former Spice Girl Melanie Brown, Brittny Gastineau and Rachael Ray were all in attendance.

20 Stars Whose Bikini Snaps Will Get You Ready For Summer
'The Mindy Project' Is Far Smarter Than You Give It Credit For
It's often dismissed as a goofy comedy with too many rom-com references and underdeveloped backup characters. But two seasons in, I can confidently say that "Mindy" is one of the smartest comedies on TV. So why, after proving itself time and time again, does it get such a bad rap?
It's not on NBC. Historically, NBC has been the home of the smart comedy. "Seinfeld" was an NBC show, after all, and more recently the network has boasted comedies like "The Office," "30 Rock" and "Parks And Rec." Even the notoriously low-rated "Community" (R.I.P.!) was considered brilliant.
Although "The Mindy Project" got off to a rocky start -- I'm the first to admit that I was considering giving up halfway through Season 1 -- it really hit its stride in Season 2, as have many of the best comedies.
At this point, not a single episode of "The Mindy Project" lets me down. Every character has become lovable -- who can resist Morgan and Tamra's unexpected-but-it-totally-works romance? -- and the pacing, dialogue and jokes are on point. But other than to those paying very close attention, "Mindy" is just another Fox comedy that may as well be "Dads" (good riddance!).
There's not enough star power behind it. No Amy Poehler, no problem? Not exactly. These days, "Saturday Night Live" players and alums are often the force behind TV's "smart" comedies. It certainly isn't a coincidence that "SNL" favorites Poehler ("Parks And Rec") and Tina Fey's ("30 Rock") shows took off the way they did.
Although "Mindy" has seen a slew of impressive guest appearances from funny guys Bill Hader, Seth Meyers, Seth Rogen, James Franco and more, they never stick around long enough to make any real impact. And sadly, Kaling herself has yet to be considered one of the great comedians of her time. Even though anyone keeping an eye on her Twitter feed or watching "Office" reruns -- she wrote some of those episodes, by the way! -- can tell you that she absolutely is.
Even more overlooked is the genius of Chris Messina, who has been in basically every movie ever and still flies under the radar despite his amazing dance skills and shining performance as the grumpy-but-lovable Doctor Castellano on "Mindy."
It's lumped in with "New Girl." As much as it pains me to admit it, I'm no longer a "New Girl" fan. I was on board the first two seasons, but at this point there's no denying that it's lost its magic. Because "New Girl" and "Mindy" air back-to-back and both Zooey Deschanel ("New Girl's" leading lady) and Kaling had some hand in creating their shows, they're often thought to be comedies of the same caliber.
Perhaps once upon a time they were, but at this point the genius of "Mindy" has surpassed "New Girl" in a big way.
It has that whole rom-com feel to it. The whole premise of "The Mindy Project" is that its main character, Mindy Lahiri, is obsessed with romantic comedies and is searching for love in an unrealistic way. Because rom-coms are pushed aside as guilty pleasures with no real smarts behind them, "Mindy" inevitably fell into the same category on day one.
What people don't realize, however, is that Kaling is often slyly poking fun at some of the best rom-coms of all time. In fact, the Season 2 finale combined bits from "When Harry Met Sally," "You've Got Mail" and "Sleepless In Seattle" in the span of half-an-hour. If that isn't impressive, I don't know what is.
For those of you who have yet to embark on your "Mindy" journey, please do so before Season 3 premieres in September. And for those of you have, I'm sorry. But there's always Kaling's Twitter feed.
Jennifer Lawrence Ditches Dior For Jason Wu At 'X-Men: Days Of Future Past' World Premiere
The 23-year-old did the unimaginable when she attended the "X-Men: Days Of Future Past" world premiere in New York City on Saturday dressed in a Jason Wu dress. You're probably wondering, "What's the big deal? She looks fantastic!"
We have no arguments that Lawrence looks stunning in the navy velvet slip gown and her perfectly growing-out pixie haircut. However, it's the daring decision she made by NOT wearing the fashion house she gets paid lots of money to represent.
We can tell from the confidence she oozes in the photographs below that the Academy Award-winning actress has not a single worry about ditching Dior for Jason Wu. Besides, she's already revealed that she really doesn't "know anything about fashion." So, we'd cut her some slack, especially if that means seeing Lawrence step out in more form-fitting dresses like this by other designers.
What do you think of Jennifer Lawrence's surprising fashion switch-up?
'Parenthood' Has Been Renewed (UPDATED)
Earlier today, Deadline reported that the "Parenthood" cast has agreed to reduce their appearances from nine episodes in what would likely be the final season of the show.
On Friday, April 9, THR noted that pay cuts were being discussed. A source told the outlet that despite all of the cast's star power, NBC got the cost of the show down to $3.5 million and refused raises since.
Throughout the process, the cast seemed eager for renewal, but were also unsure when an official decision would be made ... including Sam Jaeger, which (we guess?) means there is hope for Julia and Joel somewhere in Jaeger and Erika Christensen's nine of 13 episodes.

While waiting to hear word on the fate of @nbcparenthood, I found this pic. Don't make Awesome T. Nelson wait. pic.twitter.com/QuwLX6d6Ip
— Sam Jaeger (@Sam_Jaeger) May 6, 2014
In the past, Craig T. Nelson (Zeek) has slammed the network for their lack of appreciation for the show's small but passionate following. "There are all these people responding to our show," he said, "and NBC is completely out of it."
It's regrettable that 6 will be such a short season, but at least now we can cry over "Parenthood" because it is a heart-wrenchingly realistic portrait of the trials and tribulations associated with familial ties (and not because it's cancelled).
