'Amazing Spider-Man 2' Slings In $92 Million During Box Office Debut

NEW YORK (AP) — Spider-Man can still sling it at the box office.

"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" debuted with $92 million in North American theaters over the weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. It was a solid opening for Sony's Columbia Pictures, which has released five movies about Marvel's web-slinging superhero in the last 14 years. The release of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" essentially kicks off Hollywood's summer season and its annual parade of sequels and spectacle. Marvel movies have regularly commenced summer moviegoing in recent years, and the "Spider-Man 2" opening begins the season with a business-as-usual blockbuster performance.

Last week's No. 1 film, the female revenge comedy "The Other Woman," starring Cameron Diaz, slid to a distant second with $14 million in its second weekend.

The rebooted "Spider-Man" franchise starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone isn't performing quite as strongly as Sam Raimi's trilogy with Tobey Maguire. On opening weekends, the Raimi films grossed, in order: $114.1 million, $88.2 million and $151.1 million.

The "The Amazing Spider-Man," also directed by Marc Webb, opened on a Tuesday in 2012, making $62 million on its debut weekend and $137 million over its first six days.

The new sequel, which began rolling out overseas two weeks ago, is also doing huge international business. It has already grossed $161 million abroad, and it added another $116 million over the weekend.

That included $10.4 million from China, where it opened Sunday on a record 11,002 screens. And it set a record for Hollywood titles in India with a $6.5 million debut.

"Everywhere we opened just popped," said Rory Bruer, head of domestic distribution for Sony.

Domestically, families made up 33 percent of the audience of the PG-13 "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," a high percentage for a superhero film.

"It did seem to have a very strong component to the film, which we felt was an opportunity," Bruer said. "It also lends itself to a picture that will be around the market for a while, too."

But as Hollywood's summer rolls on, the competition gets stiffer. In two weeks, Warner Bros. opens the highly anticipated monster movie "Godzilla."

Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for box-office tracker Rentrak, said that shouldn't pose problems for the Marvel juggernaut.

"In the summer, two weeks is a lot of time between blockbusters," Dergarabedian said. "You don't see this kind of consistency in a particular genre that often."

"Spider-Man" follows Marvel's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," released by Disney, by just a month. (The "Captain America" sequel is still in the top 5, with $7.8 million in its fifth week.)

The marketplace made way for "Spider-Man" over the weekend with no other new wide releases. Sony's "Heaven Is for Real" continued to appeal to faith-based audiences, hauling in $8.7 million in its third week.

James Franco Got In Bed With Keegan Allen To 'Blow Up Twitter'

James Franco knows how to take a selfie and make it blow up, and he taught "Pretty Little Liars" star Keegan Allen how to do just that.

Last month, Allen saw Franco backstage after a performance of his "Of Mice and Men." The two took a shirtless selfie while lying in a bed and Allen posted it to Instagram, writing: "Loved seeing "of mice and men. And @jamesfrancotv showed me how to do a proper bed selfie."

The 24-year-old actor, who co-stars with Franco in "Palo Alto," explained the half-naked pic to E! News.

"I went to go say hey to him in his dressing room," Allen told E! at the Race to Erase MS event. "There were a lot of people there and I asked him, 'What's the way to do the best selfie in bed?' and he showed me. And then he climbed in really quickly and he was like, ‘Let's blow up Twitter for a second.'"

"He is a trip," he added. "He's a real trip. He's great work with, an incredible director and a really fun guy to hang out with."

Franco has been known to draw quite a bit of attention on social media, from attempting to pick up a 17-year-old and sharing nude portraits of Seth Rogen to posting a shot of himself in his underwear.

He has admitted to the lure of social networks during an interview with the Daily Beast's Marlow Stern.

Is it out of loneliness, the selfies? Are you… reaching out?

I’m not lonely…I have people around me all the time. It’s just that as a performer, you get used to interactions with attention and interactions with audiences, so it feels like an audience that’s both private and large at the same time—intimate and wide-reaching—which is very seductive. And there are positive things that come out of my relationship with it, and negative things. I get pulled into these things and, if I look back on my relationship with Instagram, or Twitter, or whatever, I find that I push certain boundaries to see what kind of reaction I’ll get and then inevitably I go too far. It’s ironic to me because what takes it too far I find, in some realms, not to be racy at all.

How Do The Dragons On 'Game Of Thrones' Rank Against Other Fictional Fire-Breathers?

$

"Game of Thrones" is a wonderful show with plenty of action, romance, deception, betrayal and some gory death scenes. But if we're being honest, the biggest draw when it comes to George R.R. Martin's fantasy tale is one thing and one thing only: dragons.

And while the those little fire-breathing hellions are the real stars on "GoT", they aren't the only flying lizards in television and film. So, how do the Mother of Dragons' babies stack up against others of their kind? The Daily Dot created this chart comparing the size of Dany's little monsters, Drogon, Viserion and Rhaegal, to other famous dragons. (Just in case you've been in a heated battle of words with "Hobbit" fans since the release of "The Desolation of Smaug.")

dragon chart

When it comes to sheer size, "GoT" burns the competition. Other notable dragons on the list include the Hungarian Horntail from "Harry Potter" and Smaug from J.R.R. Tolkien's series, who comes in third place.

In case you haven't read the books, Balerion, the "Black Dread," the biggest dragon on the chart, is Aegon The Conqueror's reptilian counterpart in George R.R. Martin's series. Martin recently revealed a portrait of Aegon riding Balerion in a companion novel he's been working on for the "A Song of Ice and Fire" collection. Apparently, these dragons get big -- like Boeing 747 big.

got

Though the current "GoT" dragons are still in their "adolescent" phase, showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff did confirm they'd be going through a significant growth spurt by the end of the season. And because we know that dragons never stop growing, we can only assume Dany's will be causing more chaos and destruction as the show goes on.

Zendaya On Why Moving To LA Was 'Hard,' Celebrity Crushes And Owning Her Height

Though she has already starred in a Disney Channel show, crushed some serious competition as a "Dancing With the Stars" runner-up and scored a Top 40 hit, Zendaya isn't so different from most teens.

The 17-year-old "Replay" singer (soon-to-be seen in the upcoming Disney Channel Original Movie, "Zapped!") recently joined HuffPost Live where she opened up about some of the challenges she encountered before making it to the big leagues.

"I kind of came from Oakland and came over from L.A. Although they're close, they're completely different worlds," she says."That change was hard for me. I didn't have very many friends. The only friends I had were the people that were on my set, 'Shake It Up.'"

"It's tough, when you're moving from somewhere and not knowing anyone," she adds. "For me, I just gravitate towards the realest people there [in L.A.], that's just my personality. It took me a while to find friends but that's OK."

Zandaya also spoke about body acceptance and how she isn't compelled to modify fashion choices for the sake of accommodating her 5'10 frame.

"For me, I'm skinny and I'm tall and I'm lanky, and for some people that could be a negative thing," she says. "If you're tall, people are going to comment whether you're tall or not. They're going to say, 'Oh my gosh, you're so tall!' -- so you might as well be super, super, super tall and wear those heels!"

In addition to sharing her thoughts on body image, Z spilled on her collection of celebrity crushes.

"I have a few," she says. "One of my favorites is Channing Tatum, but the list goes on for forever and ever. He [Tatum] can dance and I think that's really cool. I love people who can have multiple talents."

Finally, 'Cosmos' Takes On Climate Change

$

This story originally appeared in Mother Jones, and is republished here as part of the Climate Desk collaboration.

If you've been reading my semi-regular dispatches about the Fox and National Geographic series Cosmos—far and away the most rational show on television—then you know that for some time, I've been not-so-subtly predicting that the program was going to tackle the scientific issue of our time, climate change. It seemed to me that in order to be true to the legacy of Carl Sagan, a man who epitomized the quest to use science to solve humanity's problems, you simply couldn't avoid this topic.

And sure enough, last night, it happened (watch here).

Neil deGrasse Tyson and Cosmos got into the climate issue in their typically expansive way: By surveying the state of the Earth in an array of ancient periods and looking at the dramatic transformations it has undergone due to forces ranging from continental drift, to asteroid impacts, to ice ages. Rearrangements of continents, waves of extinctions, and dramatic fluctuations in climate were the norm, not the exception, throughout this calamitous past.

And some of these dramatic changes set in motion where we are now. For instance, surveying the Carboniferous period of the planet's history 300 million years ago, Tyson explained how the development of plant life on Earth, and especially trees, greatly changed its atmosphere, producing a great deal more oxygen. Yet at the time, Tyson noted, fungi and bacteria didn't have any means of consuming these trees when they died. So, they just gradually sunk under the mud and soil.

"Eventually, there were hundreds of billions of trees, entombed in the Earth," explains Tyson. "Buried forests, all over the Earth. What possible harm could come from that?"

The answer is a great deal, once the carbon content of these deposits of former life was unleashed into the atmosphere. And that's why, while we've been living in a period of climatic optimum—one that made human civilization possible— for the last 10,000 years or so, we're about to seriously mess it up. So begins Tyson's climate dirge:

We just can't seem to stop burning up all those buried trees from way back in the carboniferous age, in the form of coal, and the remains of ancient plankton, in the form of oil and gas. If we could, we'd be home free climate wise. Instead, we're dumping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere at a rate the Earth hasn't seen since the great climate catastrophes of the past, the ones that led to mass extinctions. We just can't seem to break our addiction to the kinds of fuel that will bring back a climate last seen by the dinosaurs, a climate that will drown our coastal cities and wreak havoc on the environment and our ability to feed ourselves. All the while, the glorious sun pours immaculate free energy down upon us, more than we will ever need. Why can't we summon the ingenuity and courage of the generations that came before us? The dinosaurs never saw that asteroid coming. What's our excuse?

That's a pretty strong statement, made all the stronger by the mega-scale perspective on the Earth that impels it. And thus, Cosmos continues to deliver on the greatest hopes of its fans and, apparently, its creators: To use a mass media platform to, at last, take on science rejectionism and set the deniers straight.

On our most popular episode of the Inquiring Minds podcast, Tyson explained why he doesn't debate science deniers, and much more. You can listen here (interview starts around minute 13):

Get ready to stay behind bars!

The ladies of Litchfield will be sticking around for a third season! Netflix has officially renewed "Orange Is the New Black" and the news came via star Laura Prepon's Instagram account. On Monday, May 5, Prepon posted a photo of a white board with possible Season 3 titles and the caption: "It's official!!"

We already knew Prepon was expected to return for a third season if the series was renewed for one, but now we know it's actually happening! We haven't even seen Season 2 yet, but from the looks of those titles scribbled in the photo, Season 3 is going to be crazier than ever. Our favorite episode titles? "KIDS: YUM!," "Use your tears as lube," and "Heroin Robin Hood." (Side note, what the hell do those even mean?!)

HuffPost has reached out to Netflix for comment and a rep confirmed saying, "I can confirm that the writers are back in the writers room working on season 3."

In a conversation with HuffPost Live on Monday about her new album "Shine On," songstress Sarah McLachlan commented on her sexuality.

"I don't believe we get to choose who we fall in love with," McLachlan told HuffPost Live's Caitlyn Becker. "I never say never about anything because you just don't know. I love people. I love human beings, and there are a lot of women I've loved. I haven't necessarily loved them sexually. I bend to men most definitely. That being said, you never know."

McLachlan's sexuality was brought to the spotlight when she told PrideSouce, a Michigan-based LGBT news source, that she's locked lips with women before.

Another selection from "Xscape," Michael Jackson's posthumous album, has arrived, finally revealing a track with Timbaland behind the boards. CNN reports that "Chicago" was originally recorded with plans to place it on Jackson's 2001 album "Invincible," but never made it past the cutting room floor. Fifteen years later, Timbaland has added his own spin on the song, once titled "She Was Lovin' Me," giving it a "contemporized" feeling.

According to the album's linear notes, "Jackson sings in his lower register in the verses over an ominous beat, slowly painting a story of an illicit affair, before unleashing a torrent of pain and regret in the chorus."

Seth Rogen Slams Justin Bieber: 'He's A Little Bit Of A Motherf--ker'

Seth Rogen really is just like you -- he too has a serious distaste for Justin Bieber.

The 32-year-old "Neighbors" star held nothing back when it came to discussing his encounters with the 20-year-old pop star during his interview on Howard Stern's XM radio show on Monday, May 5.

"I've met him a few times. He's a good example of someone who you meet who you think you are going to hate and then you get to hate him as much as you [thought]...You meet him and he lives up to every one of your expectations of how you hope he'll be," Rogen told Stern, adding that the first time he met Bieber was backstage at a German talk show, where Bieber specifically requested a meeting with the actor.

According to Rogen, once the two were introduced, Bieber made it seem like Rogen was the one who asked for the meeting to take place.

"What the f--k, I don't want to meet you! Don't act all nonplussed to meet me. I didn't want to meet you. I was totally cool with not meeting you," Rogen said he remembers thinking, adding, "I was like, ‘He's a little bit of a motherf--ker. Whatever. He's a bit of a dick."

But that wasn't the last time Rogen would encounter his fellow Canadian performer.

"I saw him again at like an MTV awards show, he literally had a snake wrapped around his f--king wrist that he was wearing, like a live snake as an accouterment," he explained. "I was like ‘What the f--k?' I talked to him for like five minutes. I just remember thinking, ‘F--k this kid.' I remember thinking, 'He's a piece of shit.'"

The former "Freaks and Geeks" star went on to compare his meeting with Bieber to the first time he met Zac Efron, of whom he's now a big fan.

"When I met Zac Efron one of the most endearing things is that he recognized, that as a Disney star -- or I as a man in my late 20s/early 30s, would f--king hate him. Because why wouldn't I?" he explained. "Justin Bieber had zero f--ing percent of that. No humility, no awareness, no sense that 'I appeal to young, young people, maybe a grown man who works in comedy doesn't f--king give a shit about me. Maybe I should act in such a way that perhaps this isn't the great experience of his f--king life.'"

We cant say we're surprised by Rogen's remarks, since it's not the first time he's put Bieber on blast.

“In my opinion, Justin Bieber is a piece of shit," Rogen told Andy Cohen on "Watch What Happens Live" in January. "He seems like he’s obnoxious and ungrateful, insincere, and he puts people’s lives at danger and overall he acts like a piece of shit.”

Here's Your First Terrifying Look At 'Rosemary's Baby'

The latest reincarnation of Ira Levin's 1967 book "Rosemary's Baby" is set to air this week as a four-hour, two-part miniseries. Judging by HuffPost TV's exclusive first look, it's ready to terrify anyone brave enough to tune in.

The two minute clip includes commentary from the cast and director Agnieszka Holland, offering a closer look at how Rosemary (Zoe Saldana), a beautiful newlywed, ends up as host for the spawn of Satan. And while the mini-series shares plenty of similarities with the Roman Polanski's classic 1968 film adaptation, the cast warns they've upped the ante for a modern re-telling.

"Our version brings a little bit of the horror back in," Patrick J. Adams, who plays Rosemary's husband Guy Woodhouse. "The real heart and soul of the story lies in the psychological terror."

And there's plenty of that. Rosemary is happily expecting before strange things begin to occur -- none of which can be pinned on those pregnancy hormones. From an elite society that doubles as an underground satanic cult, to creepy prophetic messages, disturbing sex scenes and witches, the new series is the stuff of nightmares.

Get ready. Fear is about to be born.

"Rosemary's Baby" airs May 11 and 15 at 9 p.m. EDT on NBC.

This game is gold, Jerry! Gold!

The Junior Mint game is probably the weirdest way ever to commemorate anything ever. The game pays tribute to the classic "Seinfeld" episode -- in which Jerry and Kramer accidentally drop a Junior Mint into a patient's body during surgery -- by giving you the chance to experience it for yourself.

It was created by @Seinfeld2000, a parody account which imagines what "Seinfeld" would be like if it was around today, and Malta-based developer Pippin Barr. Ezra Koenig, lead singer for Vampire Weekend, sings the a cappella theme in the background, according to Pitchfork.

As for the gameplay, your objective is simple: get as many Junior Mints into the patient as possible. Then after all your mints have finally run out, a generous donation is made in your name to the Human Fund.

It's got Junior Mints, Jason Alexander, an appearance by Miley Cyrus and yada yada yada ... it may just be the greatest game ever made.

Emma Stone Shrugs Off The Haters In Awesome Seventeen Interview

Emma Stone might be the most likeable girl in Hollywood right now. When she's not destroying Jimmy Fallon in a lip sync competition or graciously correcting her boyfriend when he's in the wrong, she also somehow manages to call out body shaming in the most no-nonsense way possible.

In a candid interview with Seventeen.com, the "Amazing Spider-Man 2" actress continues to be amazing, opening up about body confidence, ignoring the haters and what makes her feel powerful. Scroll down below for highlights and head over to seventeen.com for more.

On dealing with haters...
“Sometimes it's really easy to shrug it off and other times, things have pinched more. I think most of us are like that, right? Someone lobs a snide remark your way, and sometimes you can laugh about it, while other times you can actually feel the sting. I'm actively working hard on learning to appreciate yourself no matter what. If what someone else says can easily derail you, it means your sense of self isn't that firmly established in the first place. It's an inside job. You're beautiful and worthy and totally unique. People insult each other based on their own insecurities -- even though it may feel personal, it really never is. Really. Seriously.”

On body confidence...
“It can be really challenging in today's world for anyone -- especially girls and women -- to feel good about their bodies. No matter how things look from the outside, we can all be super critical of ourselves and of our image in the mirror. I've seen articles or comments that have addressed my weight, or ‘caving to pressure to be thin.’ Keeping weight on is a struggle for me -- especially when I'm under stress, and especially as I've gotten older. That's the way my genes have decided to go, and things will change as time goes on, as does everything. So when completely untrue statements are made about me or my health, of course a part of me wants to defend. Thing is, people have a right to imagine what they want to imagine. My job at those moments is to tell myself the truth. Am I taking care of myself in a healthy way? Am I respecting myself and being responsible? And over and over, I answer yes to that question. Then I remind myself to be kind to myself, and as slightly ridiculous as it may sound, to treat myself in the same gentle way I'd want to treat a daughter of mine. It really helps.”

On what makes her feel powerful...
“Wanting something, putting all my energy toward it, working hard and following through. New things I never knew I could do. Commitment. Making somebody laugh—there's no better feeling than that.”

The Beastie Boys Get Full-On Feminist With 'Girls' Rewrite

$

As catchy as it may be, the Beastie Boys' "Girls" is easily one of the most misogynistic songs to come out of the '80s. The track has been revisited before, drawing negative reactions from the band, but we're less than concerned about what they'll think of this latest cover. Meet Sizzy Rocket, a 22-year-old artist from Las Vegas. Flipping the message of the 1987 hit on its head, she's turned the song into a feminist anthem with the hope that it will be "empowering for young girls." Check out the video and read what Sizzy Rocket had to say in an interview with HuffPost Entertainment:

Tell me about this cover. What made you think to rework "Girls"?
I was in the shower and I was singing “Girls” by the Beastie Boys, because I love the Beastie Boys, and I kept saying “All they really want is girls," instead of “all we really want is girls.” I thought, I could really flip this with a strong and really empowering angle for a young girls. So, I called Matt Squire, who produced it -– he’s done stuff for “Panic At The Disco” and is an amazing producer -– and I was like, “We have to do this Beastie Boys cover.”

It's a really smart way to encounter the double standard of sex positivity as it is in conflict with the male gaze.
The message behind the song ... it’s just a really fun way for girls to feel like they can be sexy in any way that they want to be. There is a fine line between saying “I want to be empowering” and “I want to be sexy,” but I think it’s important to realize that you can be both in any way that you choose.

sizzy

A lot of artists have attempted to take down the double standards in the music industry lately -- Jennifer Lopez and Lily Allen come to mind. Is there a particular artist who you think has done this sort of thing especially well?
We could talk about female pop artists all day and how they’re being strong women in a male dominated industry, because the music industry is male dominated, but I do want to stand out as doing it in my own way. I’m not an over-sexualized artist. I don’t wear leotards on stage ... but I’m not putting down artists who do, because that’s what makes them feel powerful, and I feel powerful in a suit.

Well said. In terms of sharing these kind of feminist messages, do you think surrounding them with a pop friendly beat is an especially effective way to do so?
I definitely wanted it to be fun. Pop music definitely lends itself to talk about sex, so that helps. But I’m a pop artist at the end of the day, so I just wanted to make it fun, to have people play the song when they’re getting ready or driving down Times Square hanging out the window of a limo, like I did [in the video].

Let's talk more about your style as well. It seems like this cover, and your music in general, is almost a defiance of pop (or at least tough to classify as one specific genre).
Yes, I feel like we live in this era where, you know, you don’t need radio anymore. You don’t have to say I’m an alternative or Top-40 artist. I can say I’m influenced by hip-hop and rock and roll and all of these things, but I can say that I’m working on my first record [“Thief”] and it is very hip-hop influenced ... [but] I’m really influenced by punk and old school rock stars, you know, like Iggy Pop and Joan Jett and Ziggy Stardust.

Speaking of Iggy Pop and Ziggy Stardust, can you talk a bit about the formation of Sizzy Rocket as the character that we see in this song?
I read this book called “Please Kill Me” when I was 18 and it changed my life. I was like I want an iconic name, and I want to create an exaggerated version of myself. I want to live my life as this exaggeration. Like Andy Warhol or Freddie Mercury, I want to be bigger than myself. I’m very inspired by Andy Warhol, borderline obsessed, so, you know, everything I do is just bigger than life and that’s the goal.

I know you write for other artists, how does that identity and your solo career affect your work for other bands?
Yes, but I have a publisher with Universal that I trust to help me make those decisions. A lot of times in my sessions I’ll be, like, I’m definitely not writing for myself today, or this is definitely a Sizzy Rocket session.

And as of right now, you're only signed as a writer, correct?
Yes, I’m signed as a writer. I have a management team, a production team and a booking team, but I want creative control right now. I really want to develop this project fully before signing with a major record label.
