Amy Schumer's Speech About Confidence Is Funny, Sweet And Sad All At Once

0
0
Amy Schumer and Gabourey Sidibe stole the show at the Gloria Awards and Gala on Thursday, May 2. Both women gave powerful speeches about acceptance and confidence, discussing what it's like to not always feel comfortable in your own skin.

Schumer, the star and creator of Comedy Central's "Inside Amy Schumer," focused on not-so-fun sexual encounters, body-image issues and figuring out that you're actually worth something. After a particularly disturbing early-morning booty call with a lab partner, Schumer remembers becoming her own "fairy godmother." She said, "I never heard from Matt again, but felt only grateful for being introduced to my new self, a girl who got her value from within her."

She also talked about struggling with other people's perceptions and how easy it can be to fall into old patterns of feeling sorry for oneself:

Now I feel strong and beautiful. I walk proudly down the streets of Manhattan. The people I love, love me. I make the funniest people in the country laugh, and they are my friends. I am a great friend and an even better sister. I have fought my way through harsh criticism and death threats for speaking my mind. I am alive, like the strong women in this room before me. I am a hot-blooded fighter and I am fearless. But I did morning radio last week, and a DJ asked, "Have you gained weight? You seem chunkier to me. You should strike while the iron is hot, Amy." And it's all gone. In an instant, it's all stripped away.

Schumer has long defied stereotypes and finished the speech by giving a metaphorical middle finger to all the haters out there.

I am not laying in that freshman-year bed anymore ever again. I am a woman with thoughts and questions and shit to say. I say if I'm beautiful. I say if I'm strong. You will not determine my story -- I will. I will speak and share and fuck and love, and I will never apologize to the frightened millions who resent that they never had it in them to do it. I stand here and I am amazing, for you. Not because of you. I am not who I sleep with. I am not my weight. I am not my mother. I am myself. And I am all of you, and I thank you.

White House Correspondents Dinner Brings Together Obama, Journalists, Celebrities And More

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama was set to join journalists, government officials, politicians and media personalities Saturday night at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner for an evening of humor and celebrity gazing that has become an annual tradition in the nation's capital.

Ahead of the dinner, Obama was spending the afternoon golfing at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, with three White House aides. First Lady Michelle Obama was to accompany him to the black tie event.

Joel McHale, star of the NBC series "Community," was signed to be the dinner's featured entertainer.

The dinner has often come at key moments of Obama's presidency. In 2011, Obama showed up the day before special operations troops killed Osama bin Laden. Last year's dinner came nearly two weeks after the deadly Boston Marathon.

This time, the U.S. and Europe are anxiously watching Ukraine and Russia's role in the turbulence in the eastern region of the former Soviet state.

The correspondent's association, which represents the White House press corps, is celebrating its 100th anniversary.

Several journalists were to be awarded prizes for their coverage of the presidency and national issues.

Glenn Thrush of Politico and Brianna Keilar of CNN won the Aldo Beckman Award, which recognizes excellence in the coverage of the presidency.

Peter Baker of The New York Times and Peter Maer of CBS News won the Merriman Smith Award for deadline coverage.

Megan Twohey of Reuters and a partnership between The Center for Public Integrity's Chris Hamby and ABC News' Matthew Mosk and Brian Ross won the Edgar A. Poe Award for coverage of issues of national significance.

'House Of Cards' Star Wants Obama To Be On The Show

Could President Barack Obama be the next big name on "House of Cards"? One of the show's biggest stars thinks it would be a good idea.

Politico asked Robin Wright at a Friday night White House Correspondents Dinner reception who she would pick for a cameo on the series, and the president was a top choice.

"Maybe Obama," Wright said. "I’m going to ask Obama tomorrow night if he’ll come and do a guest spot.”

Back in February, Obama scored some points with the cast when he jokingly tweeted an executive order to limit "House Of Cards" spoilers.

Two of the show's stars approved of that idea at a premiere event days later. According to the AP, Wright said at the time that Obama "knows good stuff," while Kate Mara added that Obama's message was "one of the coolest things that's happened to me."

Author: Courtney Love, Not Kurt Cobain, Wrote Note Found In Cobain's Wallet Upon His Death

SEATTLE (AP) — One of the foremost experts on Kurt Cobain said the late grunge rocker did not pen a note mocking his wedding vows to fellow musician Courtney Love.

Love herself wrote it, said Seattle author Charles R. Cross, who has written several books on Cobain, including the biography "Heavier Than Heaven." Cross said Love emailed him to say that she wrote the note and that she gave it to Cobain before their wedding in 1991. "Early in their relationship, they wrote notes like that to each other constantly," Cross said. "The handwriting is absolutely Courtney's."

Police found the note in Cobain's wallet after he killed himself in 1994. It received a lot of media attention last week after CBS News published it, saying it was presumably written by Cobain and that it was sure to stoke questions about what role his marriage played in his death. The note references Love as Cobain's "lawful shredded wife" who would be "siphoning" his money for drugs.

"The note was promoted as Kurt mocking their wedding vows three years after they were married. It just doesn't make any sense," Cross said.

Cross said the couple often wrote each other such sarcastic notes

Cobain's body was discovered in Seattle on April 8, 1994. An investigation determined that days earlier Cobain had gone into the greenhouse of his home and taken a massive dose of heroin. He then shot himself with a 20-gauge shotgun.

Earlier this year, in advance of the 20th anniversary of Cobain's suicide, a Seattle detective reviewed the case files, including evidence photos and statements. He found no new information to change the police conclusion that Cobain took his own life.

Cobain, who was 27 when he died, sold millions of albums with Nirvana and helped popularize the Pacific Northwest's heavy, muddy "grunge" rock. Nirvana was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last month.

Carly Monzo's prom dreams came true on Friday, May 2. Shaun White -- yes, that Shaun White -- surprised the high school student and became her date to Mount Saint Joseph Prom in Lafayette Hill, Pa. "I had no idea!" she told HuffPost over the phone. But a few months ago, Monzo made a video,"GoProm?" asking White to go to prom with her. She and her friends tweeted it at him over and over again.

To her surprise, White actually showed up. "The administration had to keep it secret because nobody could know," she said. "Our dean of students called my name and the first thing that ran through my mind was, 'What did I do?' Honestly how could I have done something so bad they had to address the entire prom? I walked up to the front and they dropped the curtains and his band started jamming."

Monzo said White's band, Bad Things, played a few songs before leaving the stage. "I was like, this is not real life right now. I was speechless. I didn't even know what to say!" Monzo and her friends got to hang out with White all night, with Instagram posts, Facebook photos and tweets to prove it. "It was so romantic," she joked. But at the end of the night Monzo said all her friends were shouting, "Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!" and White kissed her on the cheek. "It was so amazing, I can't even describe it to you."

According to Monzo, White flew all the way from Austria to be her date -- her original date kindly backed out once the snowboarder got there -- and also tweeted photos from the festivities.

Of course, five years later, we know that Pratt will play Owen in "Jurassic World," the lead in the film, who has been described as a "rugged ex-military dude." So, when the clip surfaced on Twitter, Pratt responded with more shock than really anyone involved.

As one Youtube commenter Christian Rodriguez put it, "Omg it's ironic because he actually is In jurrasic park 4 and the lead lol."

Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent are married! The coupled tied the knot at the New York Public Library, officially becoming the first same-sex couple to wed at the iconic New York Location.

The "American Dream Builders" host and Rachel Zoe's former assistant got engaged in April of last year, after first appearing as a couple when the New York Post spotted them "kissing at the sunglass rack in the men's section" in December of 2012.

After the engagement, Brent told E! news the couple planned to have a "really sexy wedding ceremony, like really masculine but sexy feel. Its been really great and been a really fun process for us to blend our aesthetics together and really create this whole moment."

People magazine reported that the decor "combined their color palette of black, whites and creams," with gold elements, as well as a custom built wall, using "linens from Berkus's own fabric line blended with his Target collection."

Guests of the ceremony included such homemaking goddesses as Oprah Winfrey, Rachael Ray, Katie Lee and Rebecca Minkoff. There remains no report as to whether Oprah Chai was served.

Paolo Sorrentino, Oscar-Winning Filmmaker, To Direct TV Miniseries About Fictional American Pope

0
0
ROME (RNS) Fresh from his Oscar win for best foreign film, Italian director Paolo Sorrentino’s next project is a TV series about a fictional American pope.

Sorrentino, who won for his sumptuous, stream-of-consciousness feature, “La Grande Bellezza” (or “The Great Beauty”), will now direct an imaginary pope named Lenny Belardo. The actor chosen to play the Roman Catholic pontiff has not been announced.

Sorrentino also previously directed “This Must Be the Place,” an English-language story about a goth musician played by Sean Penn who, after the death of his father, a Holocaust survivor, comes out of self-imposed exile to become a Nazi hunter.

The new series will be no less controversial; given Sorrentino’s wildly inventive style, the series will likely skirt between the sacred and profane.

The working title for the series is “The Young Pope,” and the 43-year-old director hopes to create fictional mysteries and scandals within the walls of the Vatican.

The Italian production company Wildside, Rupert Murdoch’s Sky TV and U.S. producer John Lyons are co-producing the project.

“The series is about dreams, fears, conflicts, battles, the search for meaning and the need for love of a pope, seen through Sorrentino’s unique vision capable of creating worlds that are at the same incredible and more real than reality itself,” said Wildside’s Lorenzo Mieli and Mario Gianani in a statement.

The series will include eight 50-minute episodes with an international cast and will be shot at the Vatican, Italy, Africa and the U.S.

The producers were unavailable for comment on Tuesday (April 8). But in an interview with the Italian daily Corriere della Sera, Mieli predicted that the imaginary pope would rival other complex characters, including Tony Soprano in “The Sopranos,” Walter White in “Breaking Bad” and Frank Underwood in “House of Cards.”

“The pope invented by Sorrentino is someone you have to meet at least once in your life,” said Mieli.

Mieli said the lead character would be played by “an international actor” but gave no further details.

Hollywood director Ridley Scott recently filmed a TV series, “The Vatican,” in Rome, starring Bruno Ganz as the fictional present-day Pope Sixtus VI, while “The Borgias,” a historical fiction series created by Irish filmmaker Neil Jordan, sought to re-create the life of Pope Alexander VI at the turn of the 16th century.

The "Modern Family" star dazzled at the WHCD Saturday night, May 3, at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C., alongside her fiance, Nick Loeb. Vergara looked stunning in a Romona Keveza gown with a metallic bodice and white skirt as she posed for photos on the red carpet.

The night was big for the 41-year-old Colombia-born beauty.

"I feel very honored to be in the presence of the President of the United States," she told the Washington Post. "I just became a citizen. It's very exciting."

Chris Martin Gives Andrew Garfield A Lesson In French Kissing On 'SNL'

Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone are the world's new favorite couple, and even when one of them makes a misguided comment, it seems that they can do no wrong. This was before we saw them try to kiss on last night's, May 3, episode of "SNL."

Acting out a mock Spider-Man scene, Garfield and Stone prove that they have no idea what to do when it comes to locking lips, awkwardly licking each other's mouth areas and violently sharing oxygen. Thankfully, tongue guru Chris Martin was in the house, and so he slapped on a wig and showed Garfield what true romance tastes like.

"Now you listen to me, you beautiful spidery man," Martin said to Garfield. "Why don't you go ahead and show me that beautiful little tongue."

Candace Cameron Bure Talks About Body Confidence In Her 30s

0

At 37 years old, Candace Cameron Bure feels better now than she did a decade ago.

"I've grown to love my body and I'm very happy with it," Cameron Bure told Us Weekly at the annual Race to Erase MS event on Friday, May 2. "I'm confident with my body and at my age -- not that I'm super old -- but I feel like I look better now than I ever did in my 20s. I love my body."

Her three children have something to do with it.

"It's self-confidence, but I've also gotten more in shape than in the past even 10 years since I had my kids," she added.

Cameron Bure has struggled with body issues in the past.

The actress grew up in front of the cameras playing D.J. Tanner on the hit family series "Full House" from 1987 to 1995. After the show ended, she married professional hockey player Valeri Bure when she was 20 years old and moved to Montreal for his job. It was then that she battled bulimia.

"That really was the time of identifying with being an actress and that being my whole life, and then now being someone's wife and moving to a new city, a new country even," she told OMG! Insider last year while promoting her book, Balancing It All. "I turned to food for comfort and had to find a different source, because clearly it wasn't a healthy way to deal with things. So that's really when my faith was kicked up a notch and sought comfort in my relationship with God -- and not with food."

Cameron Bure is currently competing on Season 18 of "Dancing With the Stars."
