A Brief History Of White Actors Playing Native Americans

$

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rooney Mara has been tapped to play the Tiger Lily, a Native American princess, in Joe Wright's "Pan." This casting choice has been met with the backlash that Warner Bros. seemed to anticipate, as sources told Variety and other outlets that, "The world being created is multi-racial/international –- and a very different character than previously imagined."

As Variety noted, Lupita Nyong'o and Adele Exarchopoulos were other actresses considered for the role, but while it's vaguely plausible that this might be fundamentally different from the typical brand of Hollywood white washing, there is an undeniable systemic history of white actors playing marginalized peoples.

In the case of Native Americans portrayed by white actors, the trend inherently reflects the lack of respect with which Hollywood willfully treats indigenous people. Here are a few of the roles that not only exemplify stereotyping, but also the insensitive treatment of Native Americans, who are treated as relics resigned to the past.

Rock Hudson, "Winchester '73," 1950
Hudson played a Native trader named Young Bull in "Winchester '73." He appears in the film wearing face paint and a feather pigtails rivaled in offensiveness only by Karlie Kloss' Victoria's Secret headdress.

Henry Brandon, "The Searchers," 1953
In his role as the murderous Chief Scar, Brandon exemplified the intensely flawed concept of Native Americans as savages. Despite their victimized place in history, many narratives -- such as the one featured in "The Searchers" -- reposition the Native story, characterizing them as vilified others.

scar

Burt Lancaster, "Apache," 1954
Lancaster played Massai in the 1954 film "Apache," a warrior who resists the white takeover of his people. Despite the fact that the book is based on the true story recorded in Paul I. Wellman's "Broncho Apache," United Artists studio demanded the film disregard the tragic death of Massai's real-life counterpart in favor of a cinematically happy ending.

burt lancaster

Audrey Hepburn, "The Unforgiven," 1960
"The Unforgiven" insensitively deals with the story of a Native child (Hepburn) who is adopted and assimilated into white culture. It repeatedly undermines the intelligence of Native Americans and treats being non-white as a status associated with aggressive shame.

"Iron Eyes Cody," Those Terrible "Crying Indian" Commercials, 1970 - 1971
In order to fake cry in those cringe-worthy Keep America Beautiful spots of the '70s, Espera DeCorti changed his name to Iron Eyes Cody and claimed to be of Cherokee and Cree ancestry, although his half-sister later revealed he was actually of Italian descent. Probably the only thing worse than using glycerin to simulate the fall of a single tear is pretending you are actually Native person in order to do so.

Johnny Depp, "The Lone Ranger," 2013
Depp argued the case for his role as Tonto, going so far as to tell Rolling Stone he believed his performance would be inspiring to Native American children. He also claimed he had a Native great-grandmother. Depp's pleas didn't help the movie: the movie was panned by critics and flopped at the box office.

Gillian Anderson On Her Relationship With 'The X-Files' Co-Star David Duchovny (VIDEO)

Last year marked the 20th anniversary of the premiere of '90s sci-fi hit "The X-Files". To commemorate, the show's stars, Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny, appeared on multiple magazine covers together, spoke at Comic Con in New York and San Francisco and launched countless rumors of a romance.

When Anderson joined HuffPost Live to chat about her upcoming NBC drama "Crisis," host Ricky Camilleri asked whether there was any truth to the speculation about a romantic relationship with Duchovny. Anderson's answer was blunt.

"Now that it's over, I can tell you: no." She added, "It's a nice idea, but it's not going to happen."

The reason? She said the pair became too close during the show's nine-season run.

"I think we know each other too well. I think we probably know each other better than we know our spouses at any time that we might have had spouses," she said.

But Anderson admitted that she and Duchovny did have a spark.

"There is an attraction," she said. "There might even be more than an attraction, but it's not going to happen. And it's that frisson that has made it interesting in the series and continues to make it interesting."

The Story Behind Why Shakira's ‘Hips Don't Lie' (PHOTOS) (VIDEO)

It turns out that “hips don’t lie” is much more than the title of one of Shakira’s biggest hits. In fact, it’s an undisputed fact -- at least in her music studio.

The Colombian superstar shows off her fit physique in a fuschia crop top and tight black bottoms on the April cover of Women’s Health and tells the magazine about the origin of the famous catchphrase, what she’s most proud of and the cause that’s closest to her heart.

While Shak and Wyclef permanently engrained “Hips Don’t Lie” into the memories of thousands of fans, the origin of the song’s title dates back to before the single hit the airwaves and became an instant sensation.

"The reason why I named that song that is because, when I’m in the studio, I know when a song is ready and it can be taken out of the oven, and it’s exactly when my hips start moving – when my body reacts physically to a song, I know—if it’s a dance song—that song is done,” Shakira told Women’s. “So I used to say to my musicians, ‘my hips don’t lie! Are they moving? They’re not moving! So this is not ready.’ And that’s how I came up with it, the idea of the song.”

The 37-year-old songstress has been fervently promoting her self-titled album, to be released on March 25, and has spoken at length about the inspiration behind this album that “really brought together all my sensibility.” "Shakira" will mark the singer’s return to her rock and folk roots as well as include a mix of other rhythms.

Her first single off the album, “Can’t Remember To Forget You,” included a collaboration with Rihanna and allowed the Colombian superstar to reach a whole new audience. Still, Shak has remained loyal to her roots and says that Latinos give her a sense of pride.

“You know what I’m proud of? I’m proud of the resourcefulness that Latinos claim to have,” Shakira told the magazine. “We really are resourceful. Communities around the globe that have had to survive or to struggle through generations and generations of social injustice – you kind of have to find a way to overcome issues and obstacles and find this resilience. I think that my people are very resilient and creative when it comes to finding solutions to real tough problems.”

Throughout her career Shakira has been known for her activism, specifically on the topic of education in her native Colombia. At a young age the star opened the Fundación Pies Descalzos (Barefoot Foundation) to improve children’s access to classrooms across the country regardless of their socio-economic background.

“I grew up in Colombia, in the developing world. And I grew up being a witness of so much inequality, and, somehow intolerant to all of this, I decided to create my own foundation, to establish my own foundation, when I was 18,” the Barranquilla-born star told Women’s Health.

In late February, the singer travelled to the coastal city of Cartagena to inaugurate the foundation’s sixth school. The new institution is expected to impact the lives of over 1,700 children. Shakira has also opened schools in South Africa and Haiti, the eight schools serve approximately 6,000 children according to the singer.

“So we work basically offering them a comprehensive program that not only encompasses high-equality education, but also nutrition and early childhood development initiatives, which is something that I’m really involved with and I’ve done it for quite a few years already,” Shak added. “It’s something that I’m very devoted to, as much as I am to my career.”

During the press conference for the new school, “The Voice” coach also took a minute to respond to criticism of her steamy video with Rihanna. After a Colombian councilman denounced the singer for “promoting lesbianism” and immorality with the racy scenes, Shakira responded to the accusation by questioning the official’s priorities.

“In a country like ours where there are so many needs: a health system that needs to be improved, an education system that needs to be expanded, employment that needs to be generated -- for a councilman to use his voice and his time to talk about a video by an artist like me means we’re not doing too well councilman-wise, right?,” Shaki told reporters at the school’s press conference, according to EFE.

Full disclosure here: Growing up, we always kind of wished "Cosby Show" mom Claire Huxtable would be our second mom. From her sweet-but-stern approach to parenting, to her inimitable ability to lay down the law with her daughter's boyfriends, Claire was clearly the kind of mom you wanted in your corner.

The woman behind the character, Tony Award-winning actress Phylicia Rashad, is pretty damn formidable herself -- a fact we were reminded of Thursday when this letter to her younger self made the rounds on Instagram.

Martin Sheen Calls Minimum Wage Increase 'Far Less A Political Issue Than A Moral One' (VIDEO)

CHICAGO -- Actor Martin Sheen teamed up with Ill. Governor Pat Quinn on Thursday to lend his star power to the Democratic governor's push for a higher minimum wage.

Speaking before the crowd at a South Side church, Sheen invoked Pope Francis and cited his Catholic faith as the reason he supports a minimum wage increase.

"I've been an actor all my life, that's what I do for a living," said Sheen, who portrayed President Josiah Bartlet on TV's "The West Wing." "But activism is what I do to stay alive and this is a reflection of my activism. This is far less a political issue than a moral one."

Sheen and Quinn appeared at the Rally To Raise State Minimum Wage. For months, Quinn's goal has been to raise the state's minimum wage to $10 an hour from the current $8.25.

"Who could argue with $10 an hour?" Sheen said. "The people who oppose it should try to live on that in today's market. We know it's not possible."

Quinn's push coincides with a nationwide effort by Congressional Democrats to raise the federal minimum wage to $10.10 an hour from the current $7.25.

Opponents say raising the minimum wage will kill jobs and ultimately hurt the economy, though proponents like Quinn vigorously disagree.

"If you work 40 hours a week and do things right, you shouldn't have to live in poverty. That's a fundamental principle we all believe in, and we want to do something about it," Quinn said, later adding, "We are going to do it in Illinois and show the whole country how to do it."

Thursday's minimum wage boosting rally wasn't the first time the "Apocalypse Now" actor and Quinn have met: As the AP reports, Sheen personally lobbied Quinn to sign the 2011 bill abolishing the death penalty in Illinois.

Universal is hoping that audiences will shake their money makers at movie theaters this summer. The studio has set Tate Taylor's James Brown movie, "Get On Up," for release in August. The film's first trailer arrived on Thursday, promising all the singing, dancing, screaming and crying that's expected from traditional music biopics. Taylor, who last directed "The Help" to a Best Picture nomination, has an all-star cast in line for this one including Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Dan Aykroyd and, in the role of Brown, Chadwick Boseman. The young actor is building quite a resume of historical figures: he played Jackie Robinson in last year's "42." Watch the trailer for "Get On Up," which was produced by Mick Jagger, below:

Jason Bateman Was Glad To Direct 'Bad Words' Because It's 'A Little More Challenging To Watch'

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — After audiences see Jason Bateman's new movie, "Bad Words," the actor, who makes his feature-film directorial debut with the comedy, will have one question: "Do I need to apologize?"

Best known for his blunt approach and dry sense of humor in the television show "Arrested Development" and in films like "Horrible Bosses," Bateman's turn as a revengeful wordsmith who competes against kids in spelling bees is perhaps his most hilarious and crude role yet. In a recent interview, Bateman said he was attracted to the film, written by first-timer Andrew Dodge, because the humor came from the fact that the characters "were deeply flawed."

"It takes a certain audience member to appreciate that. There will be plenty of people who do not and that's absolutely fine," he says.

In the film, Bateman plays Guy Trilby, a bitter genius who exploits a technicality in the spelling competition's rulebook: A contestant must not have passed the 8th grade. Since he hasn't, he's free to compete. Not only does Bateman's character beat the youngsters, he also messes with their heads in cringe-worthy fashion.

"This is a film done for a small budget," says Bateman. "We're not financially obligated to appeal to 100 million people. That gives us the privilege of doing something a little more challenging to watch."

Bateman also directed the film, and admits the job, while satisfying and rewarding, came with a set of difficulties.

"It's like going into someone's brain and controlling what they're thinking and feeling," he says. "That's a lot of responsibility. The most challenging part is to illuminate choices and make sure there is some consistency and strategy to the end result."

Luckily he had pal Ron Howard to call on. The Oscar-winning filmmaker (and "Arrested Development" colleague) was one of the first to see the movie.

"It was a privilege to get that real high level of scrutiny," says the 45-year-old Bateman, whose first experience behind the camera was as a teen, when he directed an episode of the sitcom he starred in, "The Hogan Family." ''There really is no wrong way to do this. I just had to be open and let the film be what it wanted to be."

Co-star Kathryn Hahn, who plays a journalist and Bateman's love interest in the film, says Bateman was "confident and calm. There was no chin stroking behind the monitor. You never saw doubt. And he smells B.S. a mile away."

Hahn noted the first-time film director's guidance of the movie's other co-star, 10-year-old Rohan Chand.

"He was just able to bathe this kid in true confidence," she recalled. "He's been through it all."

A former child actor, Bateman appeared in shows like "Little House on the Prairie," ''Silver Spoons" and "The Hogan Family" in the 1980s. Like many child stars, he struggled with drugs and alcohol in his 20s.

"I was just kind of trying to even out the scales between working hard and playing hard," he says. "I felt it was time to play. I was a kid."

By early 2000, he was clean and able to land the role of Michael Bluth in "Arrested Development."

"Without that show I don't know what I'd be doing today," he says. "That job really facilitated another phase in my career."

He adds: "It was like, now that I'm done playing, I have a career."

It was also around this time that he married actress Amanda Anka, with whom he has two children. "Adolescence came to a close and adulthood really started for me," he adds. "It was perfect timing."

Since "Arrested Development" debuted in 2003, Bateman has appeared in nearly 20 films. Still, he believes he's only a job away "from never working again.

"There are probably about three or four people that really have a number of incredible roles at their fingertips at any particular moment. For the rest of us, the choices are usually pretty obvious: One opportunity is awful and the other is attractive," he says.

Eager to continue to split time between acting and directing, Bateman says he keeps a close eye on the careers of other successful actors who have also focused on directing, like Ben Affleck, George Clooney and Ben Stiller.

"I'd love to find that balance," he adds.

He'll soon get another opportunity to do just that when he directs and stars in the drama "The Family Fang," opposite Nicole Kidman.

"I'm excited to see if there is anything I can possibly do to help her process," he says. "I'm lucky access matches with ambition right now."

Relive The Most Memorable Musical Episodes That TV Has To Offer

Once upon a time, musicals were for the elderly. Back in the day, kids didn't want to watch choreographed song and dance on the television. As "Glee" approaches its 100th episode, it's clear that things have changed, but it didn't all happen overnight.

"Glee" may be the first contemporary television show to be a full-on musical, but many other series have experimented for an episode or two. Some covered hit songs, while others featured original music, but in any case, it's a tough and risky venture. Making characters sing and dance can go horribly wrong.

So, what's next? Sing-a-long lyrics à la "Frozen"? Another musical TV show? A "High School Musical" reunion?

As you eagerly await the next television interpretation of the musical, check out 14 shows that aired particularly memorable musical episodes:

Aaron Paul may get to drive a sweet Shelby Ford Mustang in his new film, “Need For Speed,” but a few weeks ago the “Breaking Bad” star went across the pond to take a turn behind the wheel of something a little more economical.

In this behind-the-scenes look at Paul’s stint on "Top Gear," we see him do a little unintentional off road driving in a Vauxhall Astra as well as give some insight into what went into creating his latest film.

Paul took part in the series' “Star in a Reasonably Priced Car” segment, in which a celebrity completes a timed lap on a race track in the compact European hatchback. The performance is compared to the lap times of previous celebrity guests.

We do wish the BBC would have somehow been able to get Paul behind the wheel of another red hatchback he's been known to drive.

Spoiler alert -- Paul sets a record in the Astra.

Gandalf's Sword Has Been Spotted In The 'Game Of Thrones' Iron Throne

"Game of Thrones" fans, you might have thought that the Iron Throne couldn't possibly get any cooler, but it's going to exceed your expectations once again. Apparently, a few famous movie swords have made their way into the seat of power. Well, casts of them have, anyway.

game of thrones

Valiant Redditor NoMoreHodoring points out that one of the swords woven into the "Game of Thrones" seat of power is none other than Gandalf's sword, Glamdring.

This is a replica of Glamdring, which is available for purchase on Amazon, because fantasy-realm weaponry is a must have.

glamdring

Gandalf's sword appears to be situated near the center of the throne's back. It is circled in red.

And right next to what appears to Glamdring, lies another famous blade (maybe). The sword circled in green appears to be Robin Hood's hilt. You can buy this one, as well.

robin hood

Redditor Elio_Garcia notes that several of the other swords that make up the Throne were likely borrowed from the 2005 film "Kingdom of Heaven." It's more difficult to tell whether or not these blades were also cast for the seat, but it's certainly plausible. And yes, these swords are available for purchase, as well.

kingdom of heaven

Now, it's true that all of the swords in the throne look quite a bit more mottled than the originals, but the Iron Throne is essentially a collection of blades melted and bent together, which would destroy tiny details. Is the inclusion of these swords intentional, or was the props department just doing its part to reuse whatever was lying around the studio? More important, are other famous blades, such as Frodo's Sting or Conan the Barbarian's Atlantean Sword, also twisted into the Iron Throne? Go ahead and scour the throne for clues. Let us know what you find in the comments section.
