Naturally, Howard Stern's 60th birthday bash was one of the hottest events of the year.

Held at NYC's Hammerstein Ballroom Friday night (Jan. 31), Lena Dunham, Heidi Klum, Jewel, Chelsea Handler, Katie Couric, Rob Zombie, Steven Tyler, Sarah Silverman, Jimmy Kimmel, Adam Levine, and Joan Rivers were among the many guests. But one in particular stole the spotlight: Ryan Phillippe, who gave Stern's sidekick Robin Quivers a sexy lap dance. Oh, and he took off his shirt, "Magic Mike" style. No big deal.

Last October, Stern's beloved Quivers returned to the radio show after battling cancer.

Christie Brinkley's 5 Quotes On Living Well

0
0
Happy Birthday, Christie Brinkley! The stunning supermodel known for her Sports Illustrated covers turns 60 today, and she looks just as good in a swimsuit now as she did decades ago!

Brinkley posed in a swimsuit for this week's issue of People Magazine in honor of her milestone birthday and said she's looking forward to turning 60. "I'm actually excited about turning 60. I feel on top of my game," she told People. Brinkley's modeling career took off in 1979 when she first graced the cover of Sports Illustrated. Since then, she's held contracts as the face of Cover Girl, Total Gym fitness products, and has even launched her own line of eyewear.

christie brinkley kate upton
Brinkley posed with fellow Sports Illustrated model, Kate Upton, at the 2013 Style Awards, and proved she's hardly aged since her cover girl days. She swears by sun protection, exfoliating, and getting plenty of exercise to help keep her youthful appearance.

While she's had her share of personal struggles including surviving a helicopter crash and dealing with a very messy public divorce, Brinkley has remained resilient and optimistic. She often preaches the value of smiling, telling Good Housekeeping, "If you put your mouth in a smiling position, a smiling feeling follows."

Here are some more of her best quotes on aging gracefully and embracing life at any age.

On embracing age rather than fighting it:
"I would be remiss when talking about beauty secrets to not say that one of the best is to care about the world around you. That's what really matters. Even when I'll be sitting here with gray hair and Georgia O'Keeffe wrinkles, people are going to say, 'There is just something youthful about her'."

On what really matters in life:
"No matter what your age is, you only have now. So it's always about living in the moment and being in the moment...I refuse to let those numbers define me and I just try to face each day positively."

On ageism:
"I think Hollywood is aging...thank heavens for baby boomers. Ageism is going by the wayside."

On the best beauty secret:
"A smile is like an instant facelift and an instant mood lift."

On why it's so good being a boomer:
"We're the generation that says 60 is the new 30. We don't let the numbers shape us; we're reshaping the numbers."

Academy Explains How 'Alone Yet Not Alone' Violated Oscar Campaign Rules In Statement

0
0
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made a rare move this week when it disqualified "Alone Yet Not Alone," a track from an obscure Christian-themed movie that scored a Best Original Song nomination, from the Oscars due to faulty campaigning practices. The Academy latched onto accusations that Bruce Broughton, the song's composer and former head of the Board of Governors' Music Branch, had made personal phone calls and sent emails to colleagues urging them to consider the song.

The nod became one of this year's most surprising, considering the film of the same title received only a bare-bones seven-day qualifying theatrical release. Following the Jan. 16 nomination announcement, insiders began to question Broughton's campaign ethics. Still, in the wake of Wednesday's revelation that the "Alone Yet Not Alone" nomination would be rescinded, many journalists urged the Academy to explain its decision in more detail.

Now, the Academy has released a statement that elucidates the verdict. The rules regarding the nomination process for Best Original Song indicate that the names of composers and lyricists are to be omitted from the DVD of eligible songs sent to voters. The effort intends to maintain integrity in the category, encouraging voters to nominate the most merited songs rather than the most appealing names associated with them. (Still, A-list pop stars are staples of the category. This year alone, Taylor Swift, Coldplay, Lana Del Rey, Beyonce and Jay Z are among a long list of snubs.)

Because Broughton allegedly identified which of the DVD's songs belonged to him -- information most potential nominees were not privy to -- when emailing one-third of the Music Branch to ask voters to listen to it, he was deemed out of bounds in regard to the campaign rulebook.

Read the Academy's full statement below.

The Board of Governors’ decision to rescind the Original Song nomination for “Alone Yet Not Alone,” music by Bruce Broughton, was made thoughtfully and after careful consideration. The Academy takes very seriously anything that undermines the integrity of the Oscars® voting process. The Board regretfully concluded that Mr. Broughton’s actions did precisely that.

The nominating process for Original Song is intended to be anonymous, with each eligible song listed only by title and the name of the film in which it is used—the idea being to prevent favoritism and promote unbiased voting. It’s been a long-standing policy and practice of the Academy—as well as a requirement of Rule 5.3 of the 86th Academy Awards® Rules—to omit composer and lyricist credits from the DVD of eligible songs that are sent to members of the Music Branch. The Academy wants members to vote for nominees based solely on the achievement of a particular song in a movie, without regard to who may have written it.

Mr. Broughton sent an email to at least 70 of his fellow Music Branch members—nearly one-third of the branch’s 240 members. When he identified the song as track #57 as one he had composed, and asked voting branch members to listen to it, he took advantage of information that few other potential nominees are privy to. As a former Academy Governor and current member of the Music Branch’s executive committee, Mr. Broughton should have been more cautious about acting in a way that made it appear as if he were taking advantage of his position to exert undue influence. At a minimum, his actions called into question whether the process was "fair and equitable," as the Academy's rules require. The Academy is dedicated to doing everything it can to ensure a level playing field for all potential Oscar® contenders—including those who don’t enjoy the access, knowledge, and influence of a long-standing Academy insider.

"I didn't ask anybody to vote for it," Broughton told CBS News after learning his nomination had been rescinded. "I didn't do any promotion about the film. I didn't do anything that I understood the rules to exclude."

Robin Thicke, Kendrick Lamar Perform At ESPN Super Bowl Bash

NEW YORK (AP) — Robin Thicke and Kendrick Lamar might be putting in their bids for the 2015 Super Bowl halftime show.

The artists were energetic when they performed Friday night at ESPN's pre-Super Bowl bash at Pier 36 in New York City. Thicke's performance included the upbeat jams "Give It 2 U," ''Magic" and "Blurred Lines," which he closed with and got the audience of a few thousand grooving.

He also slowed it down, playing the piano during "Dreamworld" and standing on top of it. Thicke even sang covers, including Michael Jackson's "Rock With You" and Marvin Gaye's "Let's Stay Together." Thicke is in the midst of a lawsuit with Gaye's children, who say some of his songs, including the hit "Blurred Lines," sound too similar to Gaye's music.

Lamar was also a crowd pleaser, working the stage from left to right and performing hits like "Don't Kill My Vibe" and "Poetic Justice." The audience included a number of celebrities, from Spike Lee to Tim Tebow, Ice-T and Lindsey Vonn with her crutches.

The Seattle Seahawks will play the Denver Broncos on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. Bruno Mars is the halftime performer.

Empathy, Apathy and the Categorical Imperative

0
0
The world will never be perfect, as adults we accept this. It's unlikely any of us will live to see an end to world poverty, hunger or the ills of man. However, what I often find myself most astounded by is the lack of human empathy displayed by those of us who are fortunate enough to live without having to worry where our next meal will come from.

We live comfortably, in a modern era of convenience. We have dishwashers to clean our dishes, washing machines to clean our clothes and Google to answer all of our questions. So how is it that we have less time than ever to share with others, despite our burgeoning social media accounts?

Is it that we are we so bombarded with the boundless problems of the world that we feel nothing can be done? Are statistics presented in a format so clinical that we can no longer recognize the human component? Many well-intended people satisfy the need to do their part by reposting info-graphics on Twitter or Facebook. Though I'll gladly acknowledge that awareness is a very important piece of the puzzle, knowledge isn't enough. According to recent surveys, (Gallup, IFIC) more than half of the American population is trying to lose weight. Does that mean that people don't know that spinach has greater health benefits than potato chips? Of course not. It means that making a decision to change our habitual behaviors is hard. Stepping out of our comfort zone takes commitment and effort. Many of us have no idea where to begin.

Picking a cause isn't about weighing out who needs our help the most. Getting involved with something that speaks to your own beliefs is the best way to ensure your continued involvement. The only categorical imperative that I believe truly exists supersedes all the differences...

All unnecessary suffering is unnecessary and ignorance isn't a victimless crime.

Making a lasting impact begins with small measures. It can be as simple as adding a weekly reminder to your calendar or spending a few minutes researching a cause that motivates you into action.

Need some ideas on how to get started?

Become a 'Big'.
Big Brothers Big Sisters pairs young people with role models to help them reach their full potential. Spending time with a 'Little' a few times a month is a relatively small time commitment, but can make a huge difference by inspiring a little one. Scheduling is often flexible, but consistency is the key.

Take a stand against factory farms.
Many times we rationalize away the gross mistreatment of animals, feeling that their suffering fills too great a 'need' to be viewed as anything other than a necessary evil. The truth is that factory farms are anything but necessary. Make an impact by trying out a vegan/vegetarian lifestyle or keeping meat off your plate a few nights a week. Keep a log of how you feel when you replace a steak with a balanced meal of veggies, whole grains and plant based protein. You might just find that your body thanks you for it!

Donate to a charity anonymously.
Even better? Make a donation in honor of a friend or loved one.

Help a child learn.
At DonorsChoose.org you can help provide classrooms with the tools they need to help teach and inspire children. Rather it's replacing a broken speaker for an after-school music program or providing books for elementary school students, a small tax-deductible donation can make a huge difference in the lives of dozens of kids.
BONUS: Donate more than $50 dollars and you'll get handmade thank you notes from the classrooms you've helped.

Be Positive.
Small efforts can still have a lasting effect. Show respect in your daily life for the people around you. Make a (hands-free) phone call to an elderly relative while you sit in traffic. Buy an extra cup of coffee for the homeless man outside or send a letter of gratitude to someone who's made an impact in your life.

The best part? All of these behaviors are proven to improve your quality of life, bring you fulfillment, and make you happier.

So get up, live consciously and spread the joy!

Special thanks to Dr. Paul Bloom, Dr. Bernie Siegel, Joshua Rosenthal, MScED, Alexis Ohanian, Raymond Braun, Amber Morasse, Michelle Cho and Sam Simon for living lives that inspire countless others.

Future Of Philip Seymour Hoffman's TV Series, 'Happyish' Undetermined

With the tragic passing of Philip Seymour Hoffman, the future of his projects he was working on are uncertain, including the upcoming Showtime series, "Happyish."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Happyish" (which IMDB lists as being in post-production) is "a dark examination of the pursuit of happiness," starring Hoffman as a middle-aged man trying to change his life.

Showtime gave the series a full season order comprising of ten episodes, but whether the show will ever air is yet to be determined.

HuffPost TV reached out to Showtime, but they only made a statement about the death of Hoffman and not the series itself:

Philip Seymour Hoffman was one of our generation’s finest and most brilliant actors. He was also a gifted comedic talent. It was a great privilege and pleasure to work with him and we are all absolutely devastated by this sudden loss. Our thoughts go out to his family at this very difficult time.

Aside from "Happyish" Hoffman was also working on other projects, including the next two-part "Hunger Games" movie, "Mockingjay."

Philip Seymour Hoffman's 'Hunger Games' Role & His Other Final Performances

Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead in his New York City apartment on Feb. 2 after an apparent drug overdose.

The actor, who was 46 at the time of his death, leaves behind a legacy of iconic performances, including but not limited to his Oscar-winning role as Truman Capote in "Capote," as well as his stirring work in "The Master," "Magnolia," "Boogie Nights," "Almost Famous," "The Savages," "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead," "The Talented Mr. Ripley," "The Big Lebowski," "25th Hour," "Punch-Drunk Love," "Moneyball," "Charlie Wilson's War," "The Ides of March," "Doubt" and "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" among many others.

"We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil," Hoffman's family said in a statement following his death. "This is a tragic and sudden loss."

Hoffman was last seen onscreen in "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," in which he played Plutarch Heavensbee, the head gamemaker in the film's dystopian universe. Hoffman was set to reprise that role in both parts of "Mockingjay," the "Hunger Games" finale, the first portion of which is scheduled for release on Nov. 21 of this year.

"Philip Seymour Hoffman was a singular talent and one of the most gifted actors of our generation," a representative for Lionsgate, the studio behind the "Hunger Games" franchise, said in a statement. "We're very fortunate that he graced our Hunger Games family. Losing him in his prime is a tragedy, and we send our deepest condolences to Philip's family."

According to sources close to the "Hunger Games," Hoffman's work on "Mockingjay Part 1" was largely completed before he died. The actor apparently had one week of filming left on "Mockingjay Part 2," but his death will not impact the scheduled release dates of either film.

Beyond "Mockingjay," Hoffman has two other films that are ready for release: Anton Corbijn's "A Most Wanted Man," with Rachel McAdams and Robin Wright in co-starring roles, and John Slattery's "God's Pocket," which features Christina Hendricks and Richard Jenkins. Both movies debuted at this year's Sundance Film Festival, where Hoffman was in attendance.

“Hearing that Philip Seymour Hoffman passed away came as much as a shock to me as to anyone else I'd imagine. We spent some time together only two weeks ago and he seemed in a good place despite some issues he had to deal with," Corbijn said in a statement. "He was not only the most gifted actor I ever worked with (and judging by the legacy he leaves behind I am certain I share this with most if not all directors who were fortunate enough to work with him), he had also become an incredibly inspiring and supportive friend. I am so terribly sad as I find it impossible to comprehend what happened today and to collect my thoughts properly. I have to think about Mimi and the children and I wish them much strength coping with the loss of this truly great man as a father and partner."

Both "A Most Wanted Man" and "God's Pocket" will likely see U.S. release sometime this year. In addition to those films, Hoffman was set to direct the indie drama "Ezekiel Moss," with Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams in starring roles. (Hoffman directed one other film in his career, the 2010 comedy-drama "Jack Goes Boating.") He was also set as the lead in the Showtime series "Happyish," but that project's status is now in doubt as well.

Hoffman Family 'Devastated' By Actor's NYC Death

NEW YORK (AP) — The family of Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman says his death is "a tragic and sudden loss."

The 46-year-old actor was found dead Sunday in his New York City apartment. In a statement, the family said the "outpouring of love and support" was appreciated. They asked people to respect their privacy.

Hoffman made his career mostly as a character actor, and he was one of the most prolific in the business.

The stage-trained actor's rumpled naturalism made him one of the most admired performers of his generation. He was nominated for Academy Awards four times and won the Oscar for best actor in 2006 for his portrayal of writer Truman Capote in "Capote."

He leaves behind his partner of 15 years, Mimi O'Donnell, and their three children.

Woody Allen Responds To Sexual Abuse Accusations

0

Woody Allen's lawyer Elkan Abramowitz has responded to sexual abuse accusations in a formal statement which points blame at Allen's ex-wife Mia Farrow.

"It is tragic that after 20 years a story engineered by a vengeful lover resurfaces after it was fully vetted and rejected by independent authorities," he wrote. "The one to blame for Dylan's distress is neither Dylan nor Woody Allen." According to Abramowitz, Allen will be personally responding "very soon," as he "has read the article and found it untrue and disgraceful."

This response comes after Dylan Farrow's open letter sparked controversy yesterday (Feb. 1) with its resurfacing of allegations that Allen sexually abused her when she was seven years old. The letter, published in the New York Times addressed the abuse which Farrow discussed in a Vanity Fair interview published last year. The allegations first surfaced twenty years earlier during Allen's 1993 custody battle with Mia Farrow.

Allen was never prosecuted for the accusations, but he has come under much scrutiny. Most recently, Mia and Ronan Farrow very openly slammed Allen, after he was honored with the Cecille B. Demille Lifetime Achievement Award at the Golden Globes on Jan. 12.

Dylan seems to have published her letter in light of these events and her words have spurred much controversy, inciting Allen apologists, though no direct comment from Allen himself until this statement.

According to TMZ, Allen ignored reporter's questions when leaving Madison Square Garden last night (Feb. 1).

Queen Latifah, 43, returned to her home state to hit the field at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium on Sunday, performing "America the Beautiful" just before kickoff at Superbowl XLVIII.

This isn't Queen Latifah's first exposure to the NFL's biggest game, nor to the patriotic song: Latifah also performed "America the Beautiful" at the 2010 Super Bowl.

Last year, the tune was performed by Jennifer Hudson with students from Sandy Hook Elementary School, the Newtown, Conn. school where 26 people, including 20 children, were murdered on Dec. 14, 2012. Hudson was joined by 26 Sandy Hook students for her performance.

Other past "America the Beautiful" performers included Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert, Lea Michele and Faith Hill.

Latifah introduced the 2014 Super Bowl between the Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos. The game also plays host to opera singer Renee Fleming for the national anthem, and Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers for the halftime show.

Marvel released a new trailer for "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" during the Super Bowl on Sunday night, providing fans with yet another glimpse at the comic-book sequel starring Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie, Samuel L. Jackson, Sebastian Stan and Robert Redford. Marvel is apparently so high on "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" that the studio will bring back the film's directors, brothers Anthony and Joe Russo, for the third installment. "Winter Soldier" is out in theaters on April 4. Watch the trailer below.

Renée Fleming Performs Super Bowl National Anthem

American opera singer Renée Fleming belted out the "The Star-Spangled Banner" before kickoff at Super Bowl XLVIII on Sunday. A 32-voice military choir accompanied the soprano during the performance, backed by a recording of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra.

Fleming made news before the Super Bowl by announcing that she would perform the national anthem live, without the benefit of a backing vocal track. "It would be a disaster. I only know how to sing live," she said (via The Associated Press).

Fleming is the first opera singer to perform "The Star-Spangled Banner" at the Super Bowl, which typically enlists pop stars for the event. Recent national anthem singers include Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson, Billy Joel, Beyonce and Cher. Fleming previously performed at President Barack Obama's 2009 inauguration and at the 2003 World Series.

The Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos were set to face off against each other in Super Bowl XLVIII. The NFL's biggest game is held at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Ford is attempting to do something a little bit differently this year, creating a long-form Super Bowl commercial starring James Franco and Fox NFL Sunday host Rob Riggle.

The ad, which confused some viewers with its odd early teaser, features Riggle talking about the Ford Fusion Hybrid, followed by Franco trying to outdo Riggle's excitement.

There's also a tiger.

“Rob will be playing himself in part of it, and then I’ll be playing a version of Rob in the other part,” Franco told Entertainment Weekly. “Super Bowl commercials are almost like little movies nowadays. …In the ad, a lot of the little things in Rob’s portion will have doubles in my portion, but everything will be much grander. He has a chihuahua, I have a Bengal tiger.”
