Former B2K Member On Life Support

0
0

Former B2K member Raz-B is in a coma and is currently on life support at a hospital in China, according to TMZ. His condition is said to be serious, and doctors are testing for brain activity.

The 28-year-old R&B singer was hospitalized Thursday after he was hit in the face with a glass bottle during a nightclub performance, but released shortly after. He was taken back Friday morning after he could not be woken up.

Raz-B, whose real name is De'Mario Monte Thornton, was apparently trying to break up a fight that erupted during his show when he was struck in the face with a bottle. He suffered a deep cut on his lip, along with several grazes on his face.

After the incident, Chinese police detained both Raz-B and his attacker, taking them to a local police station for questioning. Raz-B was released and transported to a hospital so doctors could stitch up his lip. He underwent minor surgery.

Raz-B is most well known for being a founding member of B2K. The R&B group, which included Omarion, Lil' Fizz and J-Boog, produced hits like "Uh Huh" and "Bump, Bump, Bump" before splitting in 2004.

Since B2K disbanded, Raz-B has produced music on his own. He released a mixtape in 2010 and has been touring China while he works on his first solo album.

Newest PETA Ad Is Hot ... Like A Chili Pepper (NSFW)

Talk about a lady in red.

PETA Europe's newest ad featuring former Miss World winner Rosanna Davison is certainly hot. You know, like all those chili peppers she's laying on. Davison is promoting PETA's latest project, "Vegans Are Red Hot," a step up from a 2011 campaign when she walked the streets of Dublin in a mini-dress made of lettuce leaves to promote vegetarianism.

She's definitely not the first to pose au naturel -- reality star Courtney Stodden stepped out in a lettuce bikini last month to promote a meat-free lifestyle. Other notable (and clothed) celebrities have joined with the animal welfare organization in the recent past, including Emily Deschanel and Ryan Gosling.

Take a look at the NSFW ad below:

New Information?

LONDON -- British police say they are examining newly received information relating to the deaths of Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed, and that officers are assessing the information's "relevance and credibility."

Scotland Yard declined to provide details about the information, only saying Saturday in a statement that the assessment will be carried out by officers from its specialist crime and operations unit.

The force stressed that it was not reopening the investigation into the 1997 deaths of Diana and Fayed, who were killed in a car crash in Paris.

In 2008, a British jury ruled that Diana, the Princess of Wales, and her companion, Fayed, were unlawfully killed due to reckless speed and drinking by their driver, and by the reckless pursuit of paparazzi chasing them.

Sandip Roy: Kal Penn and the Stop-and-Frisk Storm on Twitter

0
0

Kal Penn once starred in a stoner comedy where he ends up in Guantanamo after a woman on his flight mistakes his bong for a bomb.

Now that same Kal Penn has been tweeting his support for New York's stop-and-frisk policy. That's the New York City practice where cops can stop pedestrians and frisk them for weapons and other contraband. New York Mayor Bloomberg says it's keeping crime rates down.

But a judge has just ruled it unconstitutional because she agreed it disproportionately targets African-Americans and Latinos.

Penn obviously feels strongly about it. After Bloomberg stuck his guns and wrote an editorial about it, Penn tweeted "Great op-ed by @MikeBloomberg on the merits of "stop-and-question-frisk."

That has unleashed quite a media storm, especially on social media. Some wondered if he forgot a #snark hashtag. Others said that his account must have been hacked. RinKelly tweeted "Harold and Kumar Kowtow to White A**h****s" dragging his poor co-star John Cho into the tweet-storm."

"Say it ain't so, Kalpen" writes Angry Asian Man. Lakshmi Gandhi at The Aerogramlaments "Kal Penn Tweets in Support of Stop and Frisk and We Become Really Sad."

They have good reason to feel that way. While actors don't have to live up to their on-screen personas, Penn has actually been outspoken about civil liberties.

In a 2005 interview with this author for India Currents, for example Penn recalled:

I was flying back from Nevada Penn recalls. I was with two white guys. We are all the same age, all on the same flight, all on the same kind of ticket, all dressed casually, traveling together with our backpacks and two of them are in front of me. They go ahead. And the guy stops me.
Airport Security: Step over.
Penn: Why? (I think I was channeling my grandparents, who were in India's independence movement.)
AS: Step over the side.
Penn: Why? (Damn. I am not going to be able to get onto the plane, am I? But I already started this.)
AS: Step over the side, sir.
Penn: Why?
(Repeat exchange for 30 seconds more.)
Penn: Why do you need me to step over the side?
AS: You need to be searched.
Penn: Why?
AS: Uh huh. Because your shirts are too baggy.

I was like, really, that's all you got? I think it's completely ridiculous. It does happen. It is racial profiling and it's also scapegoating. Though these days the security guy at the end of the line might be younger. And so when I am usually through with the search, he'll say, 'Hey man, aren't you the guy from ...?' And you know what? If you are the guy from TSA, and you are reading this, I am just not in the mood.

And more recently in GQ.

GQ: In HK2, Kumar gets stopped at airport security in a blatant bit of racial profiling. Has that happened to you?
Kal Penn: Oh, many, many times. It's happened to almost every brown dude I know.
GQ: That's infuriating.
Kal Penn: It goes against the notion that something like that makes us safer.

So what happened to that Kal Penn? Clearly being mugged at gunpoint in Washington D.C. in 2010 must have had some impact.

As he tells @CWmsWrites:
@CWmsWrites lol well already been a victim of violent crime. It's a sound policy and we need to stop trying to get rid of it.

Asked about it disproportionately targeting blacks and Latinos, he tweeted "and who, sadly, commits & are victims of the most crimes?" That led an incredulous @AnilDash to respond "@kalpenn seriously? You're gonna back stop & frisk with 'black people commit most crimes'?"

Clearly Kal Penn leaves himself wide open to charges of hypocrisy. Whether he intends it that way or not, it sounds like he's saying it's "discriminatory and racially profiling" when he is pulled out of the line at the airport. But it's sound policy when the same happens to blacks and Latinos because once he was the "victim of violent crime." So much for "brown dude" solidarity.

Whether New York's stop-and-frisk is actually racial profiling or whether it's hard to make streets more secure without some element of profiling is a contentious issue. Just because crime might decline while stop-and-frisk is in effect does not mean it declined because of stop-and-frisk. Mike Riggs on Atlantic Cities points out:

Last year the department recovered one illegal firearm for every 688 people its officers stopped. Of more than 530,000 stops, only 10 percent resulted in a ticket or worse, and most of those tickets were for marijuana offenses.
Whether he sees the airport line and city streets as apples and oranges or he's just had a change of heart after being mugged, Penn would have been well advised not to argue the nuances of public policy in 140 characters or less on Twitter.

But the vicious Twitter-storm over Penn's remark which has quickly gotten personal is also out of whack.

Kal Penn is not the US Attorney General. He does not work for the Obama administration any more meaning all those headlines about "Obama supporting actor slammed for tweet defending Stop and Frisk" are just stirring up political mischief. He is not America's civil liberties watchdog or even a lawyer. And despite his filmography he is not an expert on racial profiling or marijuana reform or Guantanamo for that matter.

Basically he's an actor who happened to express his personal opinion about something in the news. What Kal Penn thinks about stop-and-frisk is going to have no impact on the fate of the policy or its legal challenge. It's fine to call him out on it but there's no need to act as if the sky has fallen down.

So when @Atchka! tweet-laments "Another progressive icon goes down in flames" that's going a little too far.

Come on, this is not Rosa Parks! Or Harry Belafonte. Progressive politics can surely do better than find its icons in Kalpen Modi.

Foo Fighters Are Back In The Studio

The Foo Fighters have now written the material for their next album, meaning the band's return is in sight.

During an interview with the U.K.'s XFM this week, Dave Grohl said the band will release the follow-up to 2011's "Wasting Light" next year.

"Well, I'll tell you, we have been in our studio writing, and in the past few weeks we've written an album and we are going to make this album in a way that no one's ever done before, and we're pretty excited about it," Grohl said.

The band has not yet started recording the new material, but lead guitarist Chris Shiflett told Rolling Stone that the Foo Fighters have begun rehearsing and will head into the studio in early 2014.

The news of the band's return comes about a year after Grohl announced the group would stop playing live shows "for a long time," leaving some fans wondering if they'd called it quits. That hiatus didn't last as long as some expected, with drummer Taylor Hawkins telling Billboard in June that Grohl's brain was "working overtime" to prepare fresh material.

Justin Bieber Chills With Jay Z, Kevin Hart Like It's No Big Deal

Justin Bieber has friends in high places, in case you didn't know, but it's no big deal. He's just chillin'.

The teen crooner posted a picture to his Instagram account last night where he's seen hanging out with none other than Jay Z, who's got his arm around Kevin Hart. Bieber captioned the photo "Chilling with the boys" and proceeded to call the 43-year-old millionaire musician to his left "J." You know, because it's no big deal.

Somewhat surprisingly, this isn't the first time the Biebes and Jay Z were photographed together, though last time that happened, the scenario was a bit less intimate. In 2011, Bieber tweeted a pic of himself horsing around with Jay Z, Kanye West, Aziz Ansari, Kid Cudi, Tyler The Creator and Rashida Jones.

Tell us, who did you hang out with last night?

TMZ obtained footage of the incident, which found Braxton continuing to perform for several seconds without seeming to notice the wardrobe malfunction. Eventually an audience member lent her a sports coat to cover up the exposed region, and the singer continued on without much hesitation. Watch the moment play out below.

Can Edie Falco Be On 'Downton Abbey'?

The Edie Falco/"Downton Abbey" love affair is just the best.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the "Nurse Jackie" star said she was crazy about the hit period drama and wants to guest star on it. "I know I’m late on the uptake, but I’ve become a maniacal fan of 'Downton Abbey' -- a cuckoo-crazy fan. Why the hell not? I could be their American cousin or something."

The love goes both ways. Michelle Dockery -- Lady Mary to "Downton Abbey" fans -- told Deadline she has a thing for Falco and would like to meet her at the 2013 Emmy Awards. "I love 'Nurse Jackie,' and I really admire Edie Falco," Dockery said. "So I wouldn't mind an encounter with her at some point this year. I think she’s wonderful."

Both Falco and Dockery are up for Emmys this year.

Falco on "Downton Abbey" needs to happen. She wouldn't be the only American actor to cross the pond and mingle with the Crawleys. Shirley MacLaine has a recurring gig on the Masterpiece series as Martha Levinson, the rich American mother to Cora (Elizabeth McGovern) and Paul Giamatti will make his "Downton Abbey" debut as Cora's brother Harold in the Season 4 finale.

The Emmy Awards air Sunday, Sept. 22 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.

Sorry, fellas. The daughter of hockey legend Wayne Gretzky is off the market.

Paulina Gretzky is engaged to golfer and PGA star Dustin Johnson, who won the Hyundai Tournament of Champions this year.

The newly engaged couple went public with the news on Instagram early Sunday. Johnson posted first, sharing a photo of the engagement ring with the caption "She said yes!!!!!"

Gretzky followed up with her own photo post, writing: "Never Been Happier."

It seems Johnson did not wait very long to pop the question.

Reports that Gretzky was dating the PGA star first surfaced in early January, and by February, the pair became increasingly open about their relationship, posting intimate photos on Instagram. In April, the hockey heiress attended the 2013 Masters Tournament to show her support for her beau.

Jennifer Garner And Ben Affleck Share Some Sweet PDA

Cutest couple in Hollywood? Most likely, yes.

Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck were caught sharing some sweet PDA while out to lunch at the Tavern restaurant in Brentwood, Calif., on Aug. 17. The pair, who have been married for eight years and have three kids together, snuggled up close as they paid for parking after enjoying a post-birthday meal. (Affleck turned 41 on Aug. 15).

Garner planted a sweet kiss on her husband's shoulder as they sipped coffee and waited for their car. Awww.

The 41-year-old actress recently opened up about Affleck in Allure magazine, telling the September issue, "Well, he’s taller than you’d expect and more handsome than you’d think he could be.”

She also said that starring in another movie with her Oscar-winning man wouldn't be the best idea.

“Really, you don’t want to see a couple onscreen," Garner told Allure. "People see paparazzi shots of us together all the time. There’s no mystery … People are sick of us.”

BOX OFFICE BOMB

LOS ANGELES — "Lee Daniels' The Butler" is serving up success at the box office.

Starring Forest Whitaker as a longtime White House butler and Oprah Winfrey as his boozy wife, the Weinstein Co. biopic debuted in the top spot with $25 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. But the weekend's three other major new releases, including the action romp "Kick-Ass 2," failed to find traction with fans.

"We expected to do well, but we didn't expect to do this well," said Erik Lomis, president of distribution and home entertainment for Weinstein Co., adding that "The Butler" is the company's first No. 1 debut since 2009's "Inglourious Basterds."

Even with a full slate of newcomers, last week's top movies claimed the second and third spots in the box-office race. The Jason Sudeikis-Jennifer Aniston Warner Bros. comedy, "We're the Millers," held onto second place in its second week of release with $17.78 million, while last week's No. 1, Sony's "Elysium," dropped to third with $13.6 million.

"It was tough if you were any other film opening other than `The Butler,'" said Paul Dergarabedian of box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

"Kick-Ass 2," Universal's tale of everyday teenagers who dress up as superhero crime-fighters, opened in fourth place with $13.56 million. Open Road's Steve Jobs biopic, "Jobs," debuted in seventh place with $6.7 million. And Relativity's "Paranoia," which stars Harrison Ford, Gary Oldman and Liam Hemsworth, didn't crack the top 12.

"Maybe it should have been Oprah Winfrey's `Jobs,'" Dergarabedian said. "It would have had a better shot."

Apart from Winfrey's unmatched marketing power, "The Butler" also marked the mogul's return to the big screen for the first time since 1998's "Beloved."

"She was a significant factor" in the film's success this weekend, Lomis said. "Her publicity machine really kicked into high gear, and the entire cast, Lee Daniels and Forest Whitaker, they delivered a quality film and a great campaign."

The summer typically belongs to superheroes and big-action fare, which is why Weinstein chose to release "The Butler" now.

"It's different from pretty much everything else in the marketplace," Lomis said. "That really seemed to help."

But the power of Oprah cannot be underestimated.

"It's stronger than anything else," Dergarabedian said. "An Oprah Winfrey endorsement virtually guarantees you a hit."

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released on Monday.

1. "Lee Daniels' The Butler," $25 million.

2. "We're the Millers," $17.78 million ($10.6 million international).

3. "Elysium," $13.6 million ($23.4 million international).

4. "Kick-Ass 2," $13.56 million ($6.3 million international).

5. "Planes," $13.14 million ($7.3 million international).

6. "Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters," $8.37 million ($21.8 million international).

7. "Jobs," $6.7 million.

8. "2 Guns," $5.57 million ($2.1 million international).

9. "The Smurfs 2," $4.6 million ($20 million international).

10. "The Wolverine," $4.42 million ($10.8 million international).

___

Estimated weekend ticket sales at international theaters (excluding the U.S. and Canada) for films distributed overseas by Hollywood studios, according to Rentrak:

1. "Elysium," $23.4 million.

2. "Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters," $21.8 million.

3. (tie) "Pacific Rim," $20 million.

1. (tie) "The Smurfs 2," $20 million.

2. "Despicable Me 2," $19.5 million.

3. "The Wolverine," $10.8 million.

4. "We're the Millers," $10.6 million.

5. "Grown Ups 2," $10 million.

6. "Now You See Me," $9.5 million.

Demi Releases GORGEOUS 'Heart By Heart' Track (LISTEN)

Though the premiere of the highly-anticipated "The Mortal Instruments" is still a few days away, we already know that the film is going to sound awesome -- because if the soundtrack so far is any indicator of how the movie will be, we don't think we'll have any complaints.

With the soundtrack featuring music among the likes Jessie J and Owl City, fans already caught a sneak peek of Demi Lovato's track "Heart by Heart," and now, they can listen to the song in full -- and let's just say we definitely don't hate it.

After listening to pop anthem "Made in the USA" all summer, this powerful piano-based ballad is a change from what we're used to hearing from the singer, but is still hauntingly beautiful. Listen above.

Lovatics, what do you think of "Heart by Heart"? Will you be seeing "The Mortal Instruments" in theaters? Tell us in the comments, or tweet @HuffPostTeen!

LONDON, Aug 18 (Reuters) - Singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding hit the top of the British singles charts for the first time on Sunday with her song "Burn", the Official Charts Company said.
Goulding, 26, who performed at the wedding reception of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in 2011, sold 117,000 copies of her single to take the number one spot from U.S. singer and actress Miley Cyrus.
Lady Gaga's new single "Applause" charted at number five after it was hurriedly released on Tuesday, almost a week ahead of schedule, when a version was leaked online.
Brothers Richard and Adam Johnson, who found fame through a televised British talent show, topped the album chart for a third consecutive week with their debut release "The Impossible Dream". (Reporting by William James; Editing by Alison Williams)
