When u look at ur child & see yourself in them. It's a whole new world," Rose wrote on her Twitter page recently, about becoming a first-time mom.

Randy Travis Hospitalized

Randy Travis has been hospitalized after suffering from heart complications stemming from viral cardiomyopathy, according to his rep.

TMZ is reporting that the 54-year-old country singer was admitted to a hospital in Texas yesterday (July 7) and is currently in critical condition.

In a statement to the Dallas Morning News, his PR firm says, “The Grammy winner is suffering from complications of recently acquired viral cardiomyopathy. Travis was admitted into the medical facility yesterday."

According to the Mayo Clinic, cardiomyopathy is a "disease that weakens and enlarges your heart muscle" and can lead to heart failure.

Travis was recently nominated for a 2013 CMT Award for his collaboration with The Avett Brothers on "Three Wooden Crosses." He is also known for his singles "Forever and Ever, Amen," and "Honky Tonk Moon."

But Travis made headlines this past year for something other than his music career -- the country star plead guilty to driving while intoxicated in a case that began last August when he crashed his Pontiac Trans Am. He received two years of probation, a $2,000 fine and a 180-day suspended jail sentence.

This story is developing.

Kris jenner is a woman whose family is at the core of all that she does. The momager, author and soon-to-be talk show host has six children, four step-children and three grandchildren. (Jenner most recently welcomed North West, her daughter Kim Kardashian's baby with rapper Kanye West, to the brood.)

"It's so interesting when your kids start having kids and your family starts growing," Jenner told HuffPost Live Host Marc Lamont Hill Monday morning. "It's the best thing that God has to offer."

But does the 57-year-old feel like a grandmother? Not at all, she said. In fact, Jenner shared what -- maybe even beyond anti-aging treatments -- keeps her feeling young. To hear her answer, watch the video above.

Can Ciara Make A Comeback?

Ciara, "Ciara" (Epic Records)

The lead single from Ciara's self-titled fifth album, "Body Party," is an oozing, seductive R&B track that deserves rousing applause – especially when the 27-year-old matches the song with daring and sensual dance moves that scream Janet Jackson, Aaliyah and others that have come before her, as she did at the recent BET Awards.

The bedroom groove is easily the best of the 11 tracks that make up "Ciara." There are others that shine, too: The bouncy "Livin' It Up," one of two songs to feature Nicki Minaj, has an empowering feel; the mid-tempo "Read My Lips" is appealing and Ciara's sweet tone rides nicely over the semi-electronic beat of "Overdose."

Still, the album doesn't feel special. While it's much better than her last two releases – the weak "Fantasy Ride" and the subpar "Basic Instinct" – the album is made up of fillers that have you still wondering what kind of singer Ciara is.

Like her past records, "Ciara" isn't cohesive, and instead, sporadic – some hits here, satisfactory work there, but overall, mediocrity reigns. The album, out on Epic Records, is her first album since leaving LaFace Records, her home since she released her multi-platinum 2004 debut, the explosive "Goodies." She had hits from that album and its follow-up, "Ciara: The Evolution," but she hasn't established her own style or sound in the near-decade she's been on the scene. Ciara, the person, is still searching for Ciara, the singer.

Ciara kicked-off her new album with three different singles – "Sweat," "Sorry" and "Got Me Good" – that now don't appear on "Ciara," a sign of her creative struggles. The album features producers and songwriters like Rodney Jerkins, Mike WiLL Made-It, Livvi Franc and Future, her rapper-boyfriend who co-wrote and co-produced "Body Party." Hopefully, he can be the Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis to her Janet – or she can find someone else to fill that slot.

Kris Jenner Talks About Naming Baby North

$

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West might have put a lot of thought into naming their first child, but Kris Jenner had no part in her granddaughter's name.

Jenner stopped by HuffPost Live Monday to talk about her upcoming talk show, "Kris." Of course, the conversation turned to the reality star's newest granddaughter, North. HPL's Marc Lamont Hill asked the 57-year-old if she had any part in the baby-naming process.

"I wasn't [involved]. I stayed out of that one," she said. "I did the same thing with Kourtney when she named Mason and Penelope. I thought, 'You know what, nobody gave me any advice on baby names.' And a lot of people won't give their baby name because they don't want anybody to have any negative energy. ... You just want to do your thing. And then once the baby's named you think, 'Oh that is so official. Nobody's ever going back on that.'"

Despite rumors that Kardashian would stick with the family's "K" naming trend, she decided to name her baby girl North because it has great significance for her and her boyfriend of more than a year.

"Kim sort of explained it to me," Jenner continued, adding that the 32-year-old and her rapper beau chose the name together. "She says, 'North is the highest power.' And their baby, North, their little girl, is the highest point and power between the two of them. So I thought that was really cool."

Kardashian has not been seen since giving birth on June 15. Although she and West are reportedly getting offers galore for their baby's first photos (in the ballpark of $3 million), the reality starlet has not revealed her firstborn to the public just yet.

There is a chance little "Nori" could make an appearance on Jenner's talk show, which premieres July 15 on Fox.

"I think you're just going to have to wait and see and tune in, because I’m not sure exactly what's going happen," Jenner said during a "Today" show interview Monday. "I won't tell you it won't happen. [I'll] give you a little something to think about: You never know who's going to show up."

Ryan Reynolds Opens Up About Marriage To Blake Lively

Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively might have one of the most talked-about whirlwind romances in Hollywood today, but the two are famously hush-hush about their private life. Now, Reynolds is opening up about not opening up, and about his plans to have a big family with his new bride.

"I don't intentionally try to be evasive about that stuff," he said in the August 2013 issue of Details. "If you ask me to describe my relationship, I mean -- words are too clumsy to accurately describe how I feel in that regard, particularly in an interview. It's a strange thing. I understand the climate we live in and why people are curious. But it's just tough and almost emotionally violent -- for anyone, I think -- to see your personal life summarized in a sentence."

Prior to marrying the "Gossip Girl" star, Reynolds had two romances that were tabloid fodder: his engagement to Alanis Morissette, from 2004 to 2007, and his marriage to Scarlett Johansson, from 2008 to 2010.

He married Lively in a surprise South Carolina wedding last September, just one year after they began dating. Aside from a handful of photos published in Martha Stewart Weddings, the couple has kept their relationship under wraps (and away from the paparazzi, though the paps still manage to catch them at the airport from time to time).

Reynolds was willing to share a bit more personal info with Details, however. He revealed that he and Lively want lots of babies to fill up their Bedford, N.Y., abode.

"We'd love to have a big family," the 36-year-old told the mag. "We both come from big families -- my parents did four, Blake's did five. A lot of people say it's crazy, but we'll only know when we're there, you know? We'll walk through that fire pretty happily, I think."

The 25-year-old actress would likely second that notion. "I've always wanted a big family," she told Allure last year. "Oh, I'd love 30 [kids] if I could."

Randy Travis In Critical Condition

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Country music star Randy Travis was in critical condition Monday in a Texas hospital, a day after he was hospitalized with viral cardiomyopathy.

A news release from the singer's publicist says Travis was admitted to the hospital Sunday in Dallas and is in critical condition. Kirt Webster, Travis' publicist, said no other details about Travis' condition were available Monday.

Viral cardiomyopathy is a heart condition caused by a virus.

The illness is a continuation of a tough run for the 54-year-old "Three Wooden Crosses" singer after a handful of recent high-profile appearances, including a performance during the Country Music Association Festival's nightly concert series.

Travis pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated in January following his arrest last year when he was found naked after crashing his Pontiac Trans Am.

Travis was sentenced to two years of probation, fined $2000 and given a 180-day suspended jail sentence. He was required to spend at least 30 days at an alcohol treatment facility and complete 100 hours of community service.

The Mayo Clinic website describes cardiomyopathy (kahr-dee-oh-my-OP-uh-thee) as a disease that weakens and enlarges the heart muscle, making it harder for the heart to pump blood and carry it to the rest of the body. It can lead to heart failure. Treatments range from medications and surgically implanted devices to heart transplants.

Kristen Wiig tends to keep mum about her personal life in interviews, but the comedien recently opened up to Look magazine about marriage.

"I don't have a specific stance on marriage," she said. "I think it's right for some people, and I know a lot of people who didn't believe in it, then they met someone."

The star has one little-known marriage already under her belt; she was married to actor Hayes Hargrove for four years before the pair divorced in 2009. In the past, Wiig has said she won't get married again.

The actress, who is currently dating The Strokes drummer Fabrizio Moretti, did say that she is interested in becoming a mother at some point.

"I'd like to have a family," she told the magazine. "I would love to have kids."

Why Matt Damon Is Glad He Married A 'Regular' Person

Matt Damon recently opened up about his private life, crediting his non-famous wife, former bartender Luciana Barroso with keeping him out of the public eye.

“I got lucky, I fell in love with a civilian. Not an actress and not a famous actress at that. Because then the attention doesn’t double -- it grows exponentially. Because then suddenly everybody wants to be in your bedroom," Damon said in an interview published in Esquire's August 2013 issue.

"But I don’t really give them anything. If I’m not jumping up and down on a bar, or lighting something on fire, or cheating on my wife, there’s not really any story to tell," he said. "They can try to stake me out, but they’re always going to get the same story -- middle-aged married guy with four kids. So as long as that narrative doesn’t change too much, there’s no appetite for it.”

Damon and Barroso began dating in 2003 and married at New York City Hall in 2005. They are the parents of three daughters, as well as Barroso's daughter from a previous relationship, and renewed their vows in April on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia.

Elisabeth Moss' 'Mad Men' Admission

$

Elisabeth Moss has been playing Peggy Olson on "Mad Men" for nearly a decade and despite the immense precision with which the AMC drama tells its '60s-set stories, she has a confession to make.

When asked on NPR's "Fresh Air" if she studied old ads from the '60s to get a feel for the environment at the time, Moss said, "No, not at all. I’ve done absolutely no research involving 'Mad Men' whatsoever. Let me be very clear. Everything that I’ve learned about advertising in that time period is from the show. You know, my interest has been so much more about Peggy as woman, her emotional life and who she is as a person."

Moss has previously said that the time period was never what mattered most to her about playing Peggy. "From the very beginning, from the pilot, I didn't care that it was the '60s. I didn't care that she was a '60s girl," the actress told the LA Times. "I wanted to play her like me, like a woman of any time. Because I think that there are things that she experiences and things that all the women on the show experience that we still experience today -- maybe in varying degrees. So for me, what I connected to was that she was just a young woman ... I just wanted her to be a real person."

But, when you do consider the times, Peggy could be making big moves in the show's seventh and final season. Many have suggested that the character could move on from SC&P and start her own agency. "I don’t have Season 7 on paper, and I would say that if you're talking about [advertising pioneer] Mary Wells, you're talking about the Jackie Robinson of advertising. That is the exception and not the rule," "Mad Men" creator Matt Weiner told HuffPost TV's Maureen Ryan. "The women's movement didn't really even have any traction until the '70s, and Peggy is still an exceptional person with an unusual job and unusually successful for where she is. There's one Mary Wells for all the other thousands of women who are trying to get into that job. I don't think you can name a lot of women who were not at least standing behind a man in an agency."

Review: 'Fruitvale Station'

$
0
0

"Fruitvale Station" is more than the dramatization of an obituary. It's about empathy.

In recounting (and slightly fictionalizing) the final day of 22-year-old Oscar Grant's life, first-time writer-director Ryan Coogler has made a film that piles small daily gestures – and one final, heartbreakingly tragic one – into an inspiring reminder about basic human decency.

That may sound trite, but "Fruitvale Station" – already a hit on the festival circuit – resonates not just for its portrait of injustice, but because its argument for treating strangers kindly, decently, comes at a time when fear and presumption often trump simple kindness, and the public sphere is navigated in cellphone bubbles.

In a star-making performance, Michael B. Jordan plays Oscar, the San Francisco Bay Area ex-convict and former drug dealer who, famously, was fatally shot by a transit police officer early on New Year's morning, 2009. The moment is glimpsed in raw cellphone footage at the start of "Fruitvale Station," before shifting back to the morning before and the start of Oscar's last full day.

On its surface, it's a regular day of errands. But all of the stops reflect Oscar's struggle to balance his past, his unemployment and his family: girlfriend Sophina (Melonie Diaz), four-year-old daughter Tatiana (Ariana Neal) and mother Wanda (Octavia Spencer, also a producer of the film).

He's hotheaded and imperfect, but he listens to his mom, helps strangers (like a supermarket shopper in need played by Ahna O'Reilly) and, in the surest sign that a dose of martyrdom has crept into the portrayal, tends to a dying dog. It's a day, presumably like any other, of fraught improvisation for Oscar, a young black man trying his best in circumstances stacked against him.

Jordan, the talented young actor of "The Wire," "Friday Night Lights" and "Chronicle" – who's in nearly every scene of the movie – puts the film on his shoulders in an unqualified display of leading-man charisma. It's a naturalistic, hoodie-clad performance, with "bruh" warmly peppered throughout his speech. His proud posture is belied by friendly, intelligent eyes and an awe-shucks smile.

Coogler intimately captures Jordan's performance with fluid camera movement while illustrating Oscar's constant text messaging on the screen. The Oakland-native's passion for the story is evident as he transfers with sure-handedness from the sunny, day-in-a-life meandering to the frenzied action of the devastating nighttime finale. Though Coogler verges on ham-fistedness, he's crafted a film not just heavy with racial truths, but one whose humanism reverberates.

For a movie about an unjust death, "Fruitvale Station" is bursting with the colorful, messy striving of life. The fullness of Jordan's Oscar is as staggering as his end is appalling.

"Fruitvale Station," a Weinstein Co. release, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for some violence, language throughout and some drug use." Running time: 90 minutes. Three and a half stars out of four.

Melonie Diaz stars in the upcoming film "Fruitvale Station," a heartbreaking true-life drama about a young Bay Area resident who was shot and killed by law enforcement officials at the Fruitvale BART station on New Year's Day in 2009.

Her next role will be a bit more lighthearted.

"I just did an episode of 'Girls,' so TV sounds very exciting to me," Diaz, 29, told HuffPost on Tuesday afternoon. As expected, Diaz is sworn to secrecy about her "Girls" role, but she was happy to discuss the show's creator and star, Lena Dunham.

"It was amazing. Lena is a monster in the best way," Diaz said. "I'm always impressed by her. The fact that she can be casting and writing and then directing. She's just great."

The third season of "Girls" is set to air on HBO in 2014. Jennifer Westfeldt, Michael Zegen, Gaby Hoffmann, Andrew Rannells and Richard E. Grant are among the guest stars who will join Diaz on the show.

The actress, who has also appeared in indie films like "Be Kind Rewind" and "Raising Victor Vargas," said she would love to do more television in the future.

"I went to NYU film school. That's something I eventually want to do, for sure," Diaz said when asked about following in Dunham's footsteps. "I wrote a pilot for myself. It's about a Latina actress trying to make it in Hollywood." Deadpanned Diaz: "It's pretty funny."

"Fruitvale Station" is out in limited release on July 12. Look for a full conversation with Diaz to run on HuffPost Entertainment next week.

"Girls" returns for Season 3 in January 2014 on HBO.

Since Season 9 will be "How I Met Your Mother's" last, expect to see a few familiar faces returning when the CBS comedy premieres on Monday, September 23 at 8 p.m. ET.

The final season will take place entirely over the weekend of Barney and Robin's wedding, and what would a Barney Stinson soiree be without his half-brother, James (Wayne Brady), in attendance? Brady confirmed that he will be returning to "How I Met Your Mother" for Season 9 via Twitter, implying a multi-episode arc.

The singular setting for the final season is one of one of many changes the creators apparently plan to implement next year. Creator Craig Thomas promised, "It's going to be a new way to tell the story. You're never going to mistake a Season 9 episode from one of the previous eight."

"This is the final lap, so there's no more withholding of fun ideas," he added. "There's something very carpe diem about it. We're going for it and looking to not leave anything on the field. I hope that means these remaining episodes will be great."

In addition to letting us get to know the show's titular mother -- introduced in the Season 8 finale as played by Cristin Milioti -- this year, the show is also headed to San Diego Comic-Con for the first time, where cast members Josh Radnor, Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris and Alyson Hannigan will participate in a Q&A for fans with executive producers Thomas, Carter Bays and Pamela Fryman.

Wayne Brady can also be seen on The CW's upcoming revival of "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" premiering July 16 at 8 p.m. ET.

Randy Travis Remains In Critical Condition

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Country singer Randy Travis remained in critical condition Tuesday in a Texas hospital after doctors inserted a device to stabilize his weakened heart.

Travis' publicist, Kirt Webster, said in a news release Tuesday that the singer underwent the procedure after checking into the hospital Sunday with viral cardiomyopathy (kahr-dee-oh-my-OP-uh-thee), a heart condition caused by a virus.

Webster said the left ventricular assist device was used to stabilize Travis's heart prior to a hospital transfer to Dallas. Travis lives about 60 miles from Dallas in Tioga.

The device used to help Travis is a small pump inserted with a catheter that assists the heart to pump blood.

Travis, 54, became ill after a virus infected his heart muscle, causing it to become weakened and enlarged so that it could not pump properly. Cardiomyopathy can lead to heart failure.

No other details about the Grammy award-winning singer's condition were available Tuesday afternoon.

Several country stars conveyed their best wishes for Travis' recovery.

"Sending healing strength and love to you this morning (at)randytravis," Keith Urban said in a message to Travis on Twitter.

And Carrie Underwood, who Travis won a Grammy Award with in 2010, wrote: "Thinking about my friend, (at)randytravis, tonight. Hope he gets better soon..."

Long a popular figure in country music, the North Carolina-born singer has been trying to put his life back together after a series of embarrassing public incidents involving alcohol. Travis pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated in January following an arrest last year and received two years probation and a $2,000 fine. He was required to spend at least 30 days at an alcohol treatment facility and complete 100 hours of community service.

The multiple Grammy Award-winning singer rode his alternately mellow and majestic voice to stardom in the 1980s and `90s with hits like "Forever and Ever, Amen" and "Three Wooden Crosses."
