What's Grey, Short And Flirty? Why, Britney Spears' Skort, Of Course

Britney Spears and boyfriend David Lucado are still going strong and it seems like they spent 4th of July weekend together.

Yesterday, Brit took some time to work on her next album in the studio, but she was soon reunited with her man as Lucado came to pick her up and the two went shopping on Robertson Boulevard in Los Angeles, Calif.

Spears wore a rather odd combination of nearing-knee high boots and a very short grey skort, paired with a white tank top. She had her bleached hair up in a ponytail. Lucado must have come from someplace fancy as he was rather dressed up in a white button down and a necktie, though he let loose when he untucked his shirt and rolled up the sleeves. Fittingly, it seems, as it was 80 degrees in the area at the time.

The 31-year-old singer took to Twitter this week to tease about her upcoming project, writing:

'Gasland' Sequel Targets Drilling Industry Influence

$

-- Josh Fox galvanized the U.S. anti-fracking movement with his incendiary 2010 documentary "Gasland." Now he's back with a sequel – and this time, he's targeting an audience of just one.

"We want the president to watch the movie, and we want him to meet with the people who are in it," says Fox, whose "Gasland Part II" makes its HBO debut Monday.

He contends President Barack Obama's professed support of drilling and fracking for natural gas ignores the environmental and public health toll of the drilling boom: "It looks like he's really sincere and earnest in his desire to take on climate change, but he's got the completely wrong information and thus the completely wrong plan."

A typically bold statement from Fox, who's emerged as one of the nation's most visible and outspoken foes of the natural gas drilling industry.

Having made his name as an avant-garde theater director in New York City, Fox took an interest in drilling after a gas company approached him in 2008 about leasing his family's wooded 20-acre spread in Milanville, Pa., near the Delaware River. What resulted was "Gasland," a polemic that argued energy companies are turning whole communities into toxic industrial wastelands.

"Part II" covers a lot of the same ground as the Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated original, as Fox takes his banjo and camera on the road again to interview residents who say their air and water were contaminated by drilling. Beleaguered homeowners demonstrate how they can light their methane-laced tap water on fire – same as in "Gasland" – though the pyrotechnics in "Part II" are more spectacular.

What's new here is the focus on what Fox sees as the drilling industry's corrupting influence on politicians and regulators. In "Gasland Part II," the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is cast in the role of protector and defender. The agency starts to hold the industry to account for contaminating heavily drilled neighborhoods in Dimock, Pa.; Parker County, Texas; and Pavillion, Wyo. Then the drillers get to work, buying off politicians who, in turn, force the EPA to back off. Meanwhile, Obama's 2012 State of the Union address sets the tone for an election-year policy shift that replaces science with political expediency.

Fox portrays an industry that is shadowy and malevolent, the power behind the throne of government.

"I felt like I could see it: a horizontal well bore, drilled down into the earth, snaking underneath the Congress, shooting money up through the chamber at such high pressure that it blew the top off of our democracy," he narrates. "Another layer of contamination due to fracking, not the water, not the air, but our government."

Of course, the industry doesn't see it that way. Energy companies call Fox an extremist who spreads lies and misinformation about fracking, the technique that's allowed drilling companies to extract huge volumes of natural gas from rock formations deep underground.

"The real reason that shale development has expanded is not because of some nefarious plot on the part of industry leaders wearing black robes," writes Steve Everley of Energy In Depth, an industry-funded PR group. "Rather, it's because people across the United States have recognized that there are massive environmental and economic benefits to be reaped. ... Both political parties are pushing for increased responsible natural gas production, and it's because of the facts, not because they've been `captured' by Corporate America."

Attitudes and positions about fracking have only hardened since the original "Gasland." Anti-drilling activists and Big Gas tend to view the other with profound distrust, and there is little common ground.

But the reality is more complicated than either side would probably care to admit.

Landowners have become overnight millionaires, businesses catering to the gas industry have boomed and cheap gas has lowered utility bills. Some climate scientists say the rapid conversion of coal-fired power plants to natural gas has helped reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This is a side of the shale gas revolution that "Gasland Part II" ignores.

Yet it's also true that drilling has contaminated residential water wells and brought incredible truck traffic to rural roads never designed to handle it. Some residents have complained about underhanded industry leasing tactics; others assert that gas drilling has made them sick.

The industry's typical response? Gloss over problems or deny them outright.

Driving home the point, "Part II" plays audio from an industry conference in Texas at which a drilling company official encourages the use of military-style psychological operations, or PSYOPS, to counteract anti-fracking fervor. At the same conference, another company's PR rep urges his colleagues to read the military's counterinsurgency field manual "because we are dealing with an insurgency" – namely, anti-drilling residents and environmentalists.

Fox said the industry has smeared homeowners who dared to speak up about their ruined water or ill health, employing tactics used by the tobacco industry decades ago to mislead the public about the dangers of smoking.

It's no wonder environmental activists and industry can't bridge the divide, he said.

"I don't see a middle ground. What we're talking about here is a force of people who are trying desperately to change the world, and a fossil fuel industry that is trying desperately to keep ruling it. I don't know what a middle ground would be," Fox said.

Beyond "Gasland Part II," the filmmaker is working on a short documentary about what he calls an "epidemic of illness" among gas industry workers. Longer term, he said, he intends to move on to broader issues of climate and sustainability.

And then there's that meeting with the president.

"I'm hoping for a call one of these days," Fox said.

Justin Timberlake's Latest Victory

Justin Timberlake's banner year just keeps on escalating, and as of last week he now boasts the only album to sell more than 2 million copies. "The 20/20 Experience" has far outsold its nearest competitor, Bruno Mars' "Unorthodox Jukebox," topping the album by more than 1 million units, according to midyear figures released by Nielsen SoundScan.

Mars' 985,000 places him ahead of Mumford & Son's Album of the Year-winning "Babel," which was released last October and has racked up another 884,000 copies sold this year. Rounding out the top five best-sellers are Blake Shelton's "Based on a True Story," with 703,000, and Imagine Dragons' "Night Visions," with 692,000.

In other midyear records, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis have continued their winning streak by producing the most digital sales: 5.56 million for their monstrous hit "Thrift Shop." The duo tops Gotye's record from the same time last year, 5.5 million for "Somebody That I Used To Know." Other top downloads include Pink's "Just Give Me a Reason" (3.4 million), Rihanna's "Stay" (3.3 million) and Imagine Dragon's "Radioactive" (3.2 million).

These impressive download statistics may come at the expensive of full albums, whose sales have dipped by 6 percent from this time last year, according to Nielsen.

Is Brian Williams Sending NBC A Message?

$

Amidst his "Rock Center" cancellation and reports that the NBC News anchor was "insulted" by the network's decision, Brian Williams raised eyebrows when he lunched with CAA CEO Richard Lovett last week.

The New York Post reported on Sunday that Williams was spotted lunching with the talent agency bigwig at a Rockefeller Center restaurant. The Post speculated that Williams might be on the lookout for a major new contract a la "Today" host Matt Lauer, who signed a deal last year reportedly worth $25 million.

A NBC News spokesperson dismissed the speculation, noting that Williams was in the middle of a long-term contract.

NBC canceled its primetime newsmagazine "Rock Center with Brian Williams" earlier this year, less than two years after its November 2011 debut. The show aired its final episode in June. Reports surfaced that Williams was unenthused by the way the network handled the show, and was reportedly angered by the constant switching of "Rock Center's" time slot. In the show's 19 months on the air, NBC moved the show three times.

'Big Brother' Contestant's Employer Speaks Out After Comments

"Big Brother" contestant Spencer Clawson's employer Union Pacific is speaking out after Spencer's derogatory statements were caught on camera.

Spencer was one of a handful of contestants who were caught on the "Big Brother" 24-hour live feed making a series of comments. Spencer used gay slurs, and praised Hitler's speaking abilities, according to Reality Blurred.

Union Pacific said it does not condone his comments.

"The values represented by Spencer Clawson's comments during the 'Big Brother' show do not at all align with Union Pacific's values," the company said in a statement. "Mr. Clawson is on unpaid leave of absence while participating on Big Brother. Union Pacific does not condone his comments. Union Pacific is acting in accordance with Collective Bargaining Agreement terms regarding Mr. Clawson."

The "Big Brother" racism controversy has resulted in several contestants losing their jobs. GinaMarie Zimmerman was fired from East Coast USA Pageant, Inc. after making racist comments. Aaryn Gries was dropped from her modeling agency, Zephyr Talent, after making bigoted comments caught on camera.

CBS has yet to air any of the comments on TV. The network has spoken out against the remarks made by several contestants.

"'Big Brother' is a reality show about watching a group of people who have no privacy 24/7 -- and seeing every moment of their lives. At times, the Houseguests reveal prejudices and other beliefs that we do not condone," the network said in a statement. "We certainly find the statements made by several of the Houseguests on the live Internet feed to be offensive. Any views or opinions expressed in personal commentary by a Houseguest appearing on 'Big Brother,' either on any live feed from the House or during the broadcast, are those of the individual(s) speaking and do not represent the views or opinions of CBS or the producers of the program."

The Jenner girls obviously spent a lot of time in their bikinis this holiday weekend ...

After big sis Kendall spent the day rocking a patriotic two-piece on July 4, Kylie decided to flaunt her figure on Twitter, posting a photo of her herself in a black bikini yesterday (July 6).

The youngest sibling in the Kardashian clan -- who turns 16 in August -- spent her fourth of July with rumored boyfriend Jaden Smith. The pair were spotted in their swimsuits at her dad Bruce Jenner's beach house in Malibu, hanging out on the balcony before taking a dip in the water.

Smith turns 15 tomorrow (July 8), so we're sure Kylie will be with him to celebrate ... whether she's in a bikini or not.

Ellen DeGeneres used to have a mullet and it was glorious. Like actually one of the best things ever. She sported the look back in the late '80s, when she was still doing more stand-up, but we'd love, love, love to see her bring this back for her show, "Ellen." "Saturday Night Live" cast member Kate McKinnon might have to readjust her impersonation accordingly but it would be so worth it!

LISTEN: Jay-Z's New Track Name-Checks Tom Ford

Rap music has a history of fashion name-checking, be it Kanye West's call-outs to Margiela, A$AP Rocky's laundry list of designers in "Fashion Killa" or many other examples. This time around, it's Tom Ford's turn in the emcee's spotlight, in a track on Jay-Z's forthcoming album, "Magna Carta Holy Grail."

Jay gave Tom Ford a shoutout in his collaboration with Justin Timberlake on "Suit and Tie" earlier this year, and it seems Hov would like to stay in the designer's good graces, as he's now named an entire song after Ford. The refrain: "I don't pop Molly, I rock Tom Ford." (Rough translation: Fashion is my fun club drug!)

The rapper revealed there'd be a song titled after Tom on his album's tracklist, but the song didn't drop until a limited release on July 4.

"Spent all my euros on tuxes and weird clothes," Jay-Z says on "Tom Ford." Hear the rest of the catchy track below, or over on Perez Hilton. What do you think of Tom's big hip-hop shout-out?

PIC: Finally, Proof That Kanye & APC Are Collaborating

In case you didn't already know, Kanye West is really, really into fashion. If his design debut back in 2012 didn't convince you already, West is adding another fashion credit to his list of rap extracurriculars: a sure-to-be chic designer collaboration with A.P.C.

Last month, W Magazine's profile of the rapper teased "his new men’s capsule collection of jeans, T-shirts, and hoodies for a hip French brand, to be unveiled in July." Rumors swirled that Kanye was working with A.P.C., the Jean Touitou-helmed brand favored by hip Parisians and those who wish to dress like them. A.P.C. confirmed the collaboration on Instagram and on their website this morning, teasing a pair of blue jeans labeled "A.P.C. KANYE." The succinct caption? "A.P.C. KANYE CAPSULE COLLECTION, JULY 14. #apc #kanyewest"

Complex points out more Instagram proof, as Kanye's friend Travi$ Scott posted the same image with text we found to be a bit more revealing:

The Minions Make Millions

$

NEW YORK — The minions of "Despicable Me 2" ran away with the July 4th box office, leaving the Johnny Depp Western "The Lone Ranger" in the dust.

According to studio estimates Sunday, the Universal animated sequel took in $82.5 million over the weekend and $142.1 million across the five-day holiday window. Gore Verbinski's reimagining of the iconic lawman bombed for the Walt Disney Co., opening with just $29.4 million over the weekend, and a disappointing $48.9 million since Wednesday.

The trouncing for Disney was especially painful because of the high cost of "The Lone Ranger," which reportedly cost at least $225 million to make. Made by the same team that created the lucrative Disney franchise "Pirates of the Caribbean" (the four film series that grossed $3.7 billion worldwide) the Western drew bad reviews and failed to capture the attention of younger moviegoers.

"We thought it would appeal to a broader audience than it did," Dave Hollis, head of distribution for Disney, said.

Based on the long-running radio program begun in 1933 and the TV series that debuted in 1949, the "Lone Ranger" brand proved a musty one. The audience for the film skewed heavily toward older moviegoers, with 68 percent of its audience older than 25.

"You think that you have everything in place," said Hollis, listing the proven box-office commodities of Depp, Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer. "Even when you have all the ingredients for what you think will be a four-quadrant, `everybody' picture, sometimes it doesn't work out that way."

The poor performance of "The Lone Ranger" called to mind a previous bomb for Disney: last year's similarly-budgeted sci-fi adventure "John Carter," which opened with $30.1 million.

But "The Lone Ranger," which stars Armie Hammer as the masked lawman, will likely fare better than that disappointment, since Depp's international star power should bring in better worldwide business. It started with $24.3 million abroad, opening in about 30 percent of its planned international market.

While critics skewered the film, it did earn a B+ CinemaScore grade from moviegoers. But "The Lone Ranger" is nevertheless likely to be a sizeable write-down for Disney and could impact the company's stock price when markets reopen Monday.

"Everybody beat up on `The Lone Ranger' pretty hard," said Paul Dergarabedian, analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com. "Everything was just not going in its favor."

On the other hand, Universal made "Despicable Me 2" for the comparatively small amount of $76 million (a figure that doesn't count a huge marketing budget). The better than expected haul (along with another $88.8 million overseas) establishes "Despicable Me," which stars Steve Carell as a diabolical villain turned stay-at-home dad, as a new franchise for Universal and Chris Meledandri's Illumination Entertainment, the Universal-backed animation company.

Nikki Rocco, head of distribution for Universal, attributed the strong performance to Meledandri, the robust appetite for summer family films, and, above all, those teaming little yellow guys. The minions will get their own spin-off in 2014, and Rocco said another "Despicable Me" film is a certainty.

"The minions steal everybody's heart," Rocco said. "It's a great time of the year to release a family film with broad appeal."

Stand-up Kevin Hart's concert documentary "Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain" proved savvy counter-programming for Summit Entertainment, opening with $17.5 million over five days, with $10.1 million over the weekend.

Fox Searchlight's family comedy "The Way, Way Back" (which also stars Carell) opened in 19 theaters with a strong theater average of about $30,000. It slowly expands for a July 26 national release.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released on Monday.

1. "Despicable Me 2," $82.5 million. ($88.8 million international).

2. "The Lone Ranger," $29.4 million ($24.3 million international).

3. "The Heat," $25 million ($4.7 million international).

4. "Monsters University," $19.6 million ($29.5 million international).

5. "World War Z," $18.2 million ($45.2 million international).

6. "White House Down," $13.5 million ($6.8 million international).

7. "Man of Steel," $11.4 million ($21.3 million international).

8. "Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain," $10.1 million.

9. "This Is the End," $5.8 million ($900,000 international).

10. "Now You See Me," $2.8 million ($8.5 million international).

Estimated weekend ticket sales at international theaters (excluding the U.S. and Canada) for films distributed overseas by Hollywood studios, according to Rentrak:

'Ender's Game' Author's Anti-Gay Views Spark Protest

$

Author Orson Scott Card's controversial stance on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights has prompted an online protest ahead of the November release of "Ender's Game," the big-budget Hollywood movie based on his famed 1985 novel.

Launched by Geeks OUT, "Skip Ender's Game" asks LGBT rights supports to "keep your money out of Orson Scott Card’s pockets" by opting out of seeing "Ender's Game" in theaters when the film is released in cinemas on Nov. 1. The group is organizing a series of "Skip Ender's Game" events in New York, Orlando, Seattle and other major U.S. cities to coincide with the movie's debut.

"By pledging to Skip Ender’s Game, we can send a clear and serious message to Card and those that do business with his brand of anti-gay activism -- whatever he’s selling, we’re not buying," Geeks OUT officials write. "The queer geek community will not subsidize his fear-mongering and religious bullying. We will not pay him to demean, insult, and oppress us."

They also note, "Do not buy a ticket at the theater, do not purchase the DVD, do not watch it on-demand. Ignore all merchandise and toys."

You can read more about "Skip Ender's Game" here.

It isn't the first the author's conservative stance on the LGBT community has sparked controversy. In March , illustrator Chris Sprouse reportedly dropped out of an upcoming "Adventures of Superman" issue written by Card and Aaron Johnston amid media criticism of Card's anti-gay views.

"The media surrounding this story reached the point where it took away from the actual work, and that's something I wasn't comfortable with," he explained in a statement cited by USA Today.

In 2009, Card joined the board of directors at the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), a group which has actively opposed same-sex marriage. The Hollywood Reporter also cites a 2009 Mormon Times opinion piece penned by Card, in which he argued, “Marriage has only one definition, and any government that attempts to change it is my mortal enemy. I will act to destroy that government and bring it down."

In 2012, he referred to same-sex attraction as a “reproductive dysfunction” in a Rhinoceros Times opinion piece supporting North Carolina's Amendment One.

"Normalizing a dysfunction will only make ours into a society that corrodes any loyalty to it, as parents see that our laws and institutions now work against the reproductive success (not to mention happiness) of the next generation," he wrote.

This Guy DEFINES Amazing

"Amazing" is probably the best adjective to describe longtime Hollywood actor Tom Hanks. From his legendary roles in "Forrest Gump" and "Cast Away" to his outrageously funny and lighthearted personality, it doesn't get much better than Hanks. Don't believe us? Check the facts and we guarantee you'll change your mind...

1. He is related to Abraham Lincoln.
That's right -- one of Hollywood's greatest has a family tie to one of America's greatest. The actor is the former president's third cousin, four times removed linked through Honest Abe's mother, Nancy Hanks.
tom hanks amazing 1

2. He takes the absolute best fan photos.
He has always been considered one of the nicest actors around, but he somehow managed to get even better in our eyes when pictures of him posing with a fan pretending to be drunk went completely viral back in August. Can you imagine being that lucky kid!?

3. He coined the "Saturday Night Live" phrase, "The Five Timer's Club."
The "exclusive" "SNL" group is made up of only those who have hosted the show at least five times. And the first to mention the club? Tom Hanks, of course. He introduced it during his fifth opening monologue in December 1980 and then joined the comedy leagues of those such as Steve Martin and Chevy Chase.
tom hanks amazing 3

4. He passed on leading roles in "Jerry Maguire" and "The Shawshank Redemption" and still became one of the highest grossing actors.
The part of Jerry was actually written for him, while the part of Andy was his for the taking and Hanks said, "No thank you." He was too busy directing "That Thing You Do" to dedicate time to "Jerry Maguire" and couldn't do "Shawshank" because he had already committed to "Forrest Gump," but seeing as his films have grossed $3.971.6 billion throughout his acting career, he probably doesn't have any regrets.
tom hanks amazing 5

5. He is on the animation A-list.
He lent his voice to Woody for a series franchise that has grossed over $2 billion, and by the first "Toy Story" film, he made his way onto Forbes' highest ranked animation associated actors. And the amazingness doesn't end there -- the third installment is the highest-grossing animated film of all time on an unadjusted basis.
tom hanks amazing 4

6. He was born with the perfect showbiz-friendly name.
Can you believe it? All he had to do was shorten "Thomas" to "Tom" and he was set for stardom. Of course, he left his middle name "Jeffrey" off his acting resume, but who really uses their middle name anyway?
tom hanks amazing 6

7. He is incredibly dedicated to his roles.
Not only did he gain 30 pounds to play a baseball coach before losing 30 pounds to play an AIDS patient a few years later, but Hanks also managed to make his most dramatic transformation, again for a role, shortly after that. Over the course of filming "Cast Away" the actor dropped 50 pounds and production actually stopped so he could focus on his extreme diet. Those Oscar nominations and wins were well-deserved!
tom hanks amazing 7

8. He is an honorary member of the U.S. Army Ranger Hall of Fame.
Not many actors can say they received a non-film award for a incredible job well done on the silver screen -- but Tom Hanks can. The actor was inducted as an honorary member of the U.S. Army's Ranger Hall of Fame back in 2006 for his accurate portrayal of a World War II army ranger in the movie "Saving Private Ryan."
tom hanks amazing 8

9. He has an asteroid named after him.
When Spacewatch at Kitt Peak discovered a main-belt asteroid in 1996, they took the most logical step possible and named it 12818 Tomhanks after the awesome actor due in part to his role in movie "Apollo 13."
tom hanks amazing 9

10. He collects typewriters as a hobby.
Only someone like him could take a seemingly nerdy hobby and make it cool. At this point, he has over 100 and isn't afraid who knows about them.

11. He takes pictures of his wife on the red carpet.
While everyone else is worried about what he looks like when he arrives, he's too busy checking out his wife. When the actor showed up at the 2013 Tony Awards, he actually took a moment to take out his phone and snap a couple shots of his lady Rita Wilson. What a gentleman!
tom hanks

12. He is the youngest person ever to receive the AFI Life Achievement Award.
Shortly after the American Film Institute was founded, they created an award to honor someone whose career has "greatly contributed to the enrichment of American culture." And 30 years after that, Tom Hanks became (and remains) the youngest person to walk away with that honor. Other winners include Steven Spielberg, Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson, but not even they were just 45 years of age when they earned the award.

Channing Tatum was spotted at LAX Airport with his family today (July 7) as they prepared to depart on a flight out of Los Angeles.

The "White House Down" star swaddled his 1-month-old daughter Everly and held her close to his chest while wife Jenna Dewan-Tatum took care of the couple's two dogs at the security checkpoint. Obviously fatherhood comes naturally to Tatum, who shielded his baby girl's face with a blanket.

“It’s crazy," Tatum told David Letterman of being a new dad. "Babies, I’ve never been so excited when they poop. I’m just like, ‘I’m in the game, give me the baby.’ It’s a whole game to see if I can change her before she cries and give her back to my wife.”

And it appears the flocks of fans and paparazzi ruined her attempt at relaxation, causing her to head back to her hotel. In a video posted on Forde's Instagram page, Rihanna says she felt "caged in like a f**king animal!"

Well despite all the drama, RiRi looks good in a bikini ... as always.

CBS' "Elementary" has cast its Lestrade. British actor Sean Pertwee will assume the role of the Scotland Yard inspector who has alternately appeared as Sherlock Holmes' friend, facilitator or an inept extension of the police force in the characters' various iterations. Pertwee announced his casting via Twitter, noting that he's filming scenes in both London and New York. CBS confirms that Pertwee will appear in the season premiere.

Pertwee's casting follows the news that Rhys Ifans will play Mycroft Holmes, the older brother of Jonny Lee Miller's Sherlock. All three actors have previously worked together, starring in the 2000 British film "Love, Honor and Obey." The project also featured Jude Law, who plays Dr. John Watson in the current "Sherlock Holmes" movie franchise alongside Robert Downey Jr. Six Degrees of Sherlock Separation?

Both actors make their debut in the "Elementary" Season 2 premiere on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 10 p.m. ET on CBS. In the episode, Sherlock is called to London to revisit an old case. Despite a falling out, Mycroft allows Sherlock and Joan Watson (Lucy Liu) to stay in his new house.
