NEW YORK — Mourners gathered Thursday for the funeral of James Gandolfini and the creator of "The Sopranos" is due to memorialize the actor at the ceremony.

David Chase is one of four people scheduled to offer remembrances during the ceremony at the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine. The others are his widow, Deborah Lin Gandolfini, and two family friends.

The 51-year-old actor best known for his role as mob boss Tony Soprano in the HBO series died of a heart attack last week while vacationing with his son in Italy.

Invited guests began gathering early for the 10 a.m. funeral. Dick Cavett chatted with actor Steve Buscemi near the front of the church. Aida Turturro, who played Gandolfini's sister in "The Sopranos," was one of the first from that show's large cast to arrive.

Some 1,500 seats had been set up. The public was to be allowed in after the invited guests.

A private family wake was held for the actor Wednesday in New Jersey.

Broadway theaters paid tribute by dimming their lights briefly Wednesday night. Gandolfini was nominated for a Tony Award in 2009 as an actor in "God of Carnage."

'If You Watched Our Show Last Night... Big Mistake... You Missed Something Incredible'

On Wednesday, after first celebrating the demise of DOMA, John Oliver then took some time to applaud the epic filibuster of Texas Senator Wendy Davis. Oliver explained, "I don't know if you watched our show last night. If you did, big mistake. You should not have done that. Why? Because you missed something incredible happening in the Texas State Senate."

After taking us through the superhuman feat that was Davis' effort – and suggesting that a sneaker endorsement might be in her future – Oliver took some swipes at Texas Republicans who tried to push the vote through anyway despite running out of time. Calling their attempt to subvert the rules "one of the shadiest moves of all time," Oliver at least credited the opposition's with being consistent.

"They simply believe that if late one night when you're swept away by your emotions you make a stupid mistake, you should always have a chance to fix it later and not have to live with the consequences."

See How The 'Great Gatsby' Visual Effects Were Created

The visual effects used in Baz Luhrmann's update of "The Great Gatsby" were heavily divisive, with some praising the film's bold aesthetics and others lambasting its overzealousness. Now the movie's production team has released a revelatory reel dissecting the use of digital effects throughout "Gatsby."

The four-minute clip shows scenes that were shot via green screen and then superimposed against the story's lavish backdrops, including decadent homes and an exuberantly lit Times Square. Each green-screen shot is seen (or blue screen, as is often the case) before it dissolves into the edited version, quickly transforming the moment into what was seen on screen. Some of the film's more obvious green-screen scenes, such as Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby's fast-paced drive through the streets of New York, are juxtaposed against moments in which the digital effects might have otherwise gone unnoticed.

Lana Del Rey's "Gatsby" soundtrack addition, the haunting "Young and Beautiful," scores the reel.

Chris Godfrey, visual effects supervisor for "Gatsby," wrote the following message on the video's Vimeo page:

Baz has graciously agreed to let us release this ‘before and afters’ reel to show our peer group the VFX work completed on his film ‘The Great Gatsby’. While this specific reel was the work of Animal Logic (as my primary vendor), in total I worked with 7 vendors including Animal Logic, Rising Sun and Iloura in Australia, ILM in San Francisco and also Prime Focus and Method Vancouver. We also ran an amazing internal SWAT team that completed over 400 shots. Congratulations to all who did such fabulous work on almost 1500 shots.

"Gatsby" is not the only film to offer a glimpse into its effects' editing process. David Fincher's 2007 thriller "Zodiac" has since provided the same insight, and "Iron Man 3" recently unveiled a storyboard sequence that detailed how Tony Stark's mansion-attack scene went from concept to execution.

Daft Punk's Big Secret?

"They're performing with Kanye! They're performing at Coachella!" Daft Punk show rumors are dime a dozen these days, but when it comes to Glastonbury, there's some serious cash backing the latest conspiracy theory.

The French disco-house robots are the bookies' favorites for a surprise set at the famed British music festival. NME reports that they're set at 6/4 odds, with Beady Eye (5/1), David Bowie (6/1) and Queens of the Stone Age (10/1) in close pursuit.

Daft Punk's team has repeatedly denied tour rumors by saying that no shows have been planned yet, though it does seem unlikely that the duo would not hit the road in support of "Random Access Memories," their Billboard No. 1 seller from earlier this year. (Bowie, for what its worth, is also reportedly not touring.)

Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo also contributed work to Kanye West's recently released album, "Yeezus." The duo are credited on a number of songs on the record, having produced bits of "I Am a God," "Black Skinhead," "Send It Up" and "On Sight." Including West's songs, Daft Punk currently has four out of the top 10 songs on Spotify.

When Whitney Knew Her Sitcom Was Canceled

Whitney Cummings stopped by “The Tonight Show” on Wednesday night, and told Jay Leno she knew her self-titled sitcom was over long before NBC actually canceled it. And it had something to do with an obtrusive promo for "The Voice."

“I knew we were in trouble when I was watching the show ... And the three chairs from ‘The Voice’ come up [and] fill the whole screen and then they flip around and it’s Christina Aguilera, or Shakira. Same difference," Cummings remembered.

“And then I’m like, 'Oh! Look at ‘The Voice!' And then it just doesn’t go back down. And I was like, 'This can’t be good if they’re airing another show during my show.' But Christina Aguilera was great as the star of ‘Whitney,’ I thought.”

Whitney said she was “heartbroken” over the cancellation, but admitted she doesn’t really fit in on network TV. But she apparently doesn’t fit in on cable, either. E! cancelled her talk show, “Love You Mean It,” after just 12 weeks earlier this year.

But Whitney’s getting back to what she does best: raunchy stand-up. She’ll be performing all over the country this summer.

"The Tonight Show" airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET.

Beyonce's New Song Leaks Online

Beyonce's "Standing On the Sun" leaked on Thursday, giving July 4 revelers at least one beach-party anthem to play during festivities next week (other than "Blurred Lines," "Get Lucky" and "Treasure," of course). This thing sounds like it should accompany an ad for Barbados. (Sorry, Rihanna.)

"Standing On The Sun" is hardly new for Beyonce devotees: The track was teased in a commercial for H&M (as one does), and Beyonce performed the new song at a concert in Belgium back in May.

"You and me are standing on the sun," Beyonce sings and sings and sings, while steel drums plink away over a Passion Pit-y melody. Listen to "Standing on the Sun" above. No word yet on when Beyonce will release her new album.

Meet Hollywood's Most Sought-After Young Writer

When "Bridesmaids" director Paul Feig chose the female buddy cop comedy "The Heat" as his follow-up to that critical and financial hit, the decision surprised almost no one. Except screenwriter Katie Dippold.

"I loved 'Bridesmaids,' but I thought he wouldn't want to do another big female comedy," Dippold told HuffPost Entertainment at New York's Ritz Carlton Hotel on a recent Sunday. "But that's all he wanted to do."

Indeed it was. Feig signed on to direct "The Heat" and brought with him two high profile actresses: Sandra Bullock and his "Bridesmaids" breakout star, Melissa McCarthy. The film, out June 28, focuses on the pair's unlikely relationship as two law enforcement officers trying to bring down a drug ring.

"I feel good about it," Dippold, who worked on "Parks and Recreation" for three seasons, said. Which doesn't mean she's without nerves as her first screenplay heads to theaters: "You know, I don't know if I should be saying this, but I grind my teeth when I sleep and I realized my jaw has been in excruciating pain over the last couple of days."

Despite that hindrance, Dippold spoke to HuffPost Entertainment about her "Parks and Rec" beginnings, how a head injury helped with "The Heat," and what she's thinking about for a possible sequel.

You wrote one of the best "Parks and Recreation" episodes: Andy and April's wedding. What went into that?
I get credit for that because my name is on it, but it's such a collaboration. The idea of them getting married was Mike Schur, but we all brainstormed it together. It's a huge process. When I first started on "Parks and Rec," I came from sketch comedy and didn't know anything about story arcs and character arcs. So when they would talk about that stuff, I would be like, "Oh, no, I don't know what to say here." But I feel like I learned in the best possible way. Mike and Greg Daniels wanted me to learn. It was really nice. It took a long time but I remember when I started debating people about the show and got really passionate, I felt, "That's great; I learned something."

Was it easier to write this script on your own?
Yes and no. In some ways, it was fun to just do spin out whatever I wanted to do. But then I also missed having this room of the funniest writers I know to be like, "What would you do here?" I almost wish I could dial in and be like, "What should I do?"

"The Heat" contains a lot of action, which may surprise people. What movies did you watch as research for this script?
I've seen "Lethal Weapon" now about 2,000 times. "Running Scared" and "48 Hours" were big ones for me. The action stuff is really hard, especially because it just wasn't my strong suit. When I see a movie that has an amazing action sequence or some really thoughtful idea of how to do it, I'm so impressed. I never realized how hard it was. Like, "The Dark Knight Rises" -- now when I watch those movies, I'm like "Holy shit."

Did you learn anything from watching those movies?
I hope I learned something. Well, it's a daydream thing. When I was a kid, I would daydream all the time. I had several bad concussions, which may have caused this.

Oh, no.
The first one was on a swing. I was on my stomach and I was pretending to be Supergirl. This was last year. No, this was when I was in second grade. This was before schools got really safe. Now there would be sand or grass, but this was cement. I flew off the swing and cracked my head. I was in the hospital for two nights. Everything was blurry. It was truly terrible. On my report cards after that, they would say I daydreamed too much. So there wasn't anything from those movies that I could take, but seeing how they did action scenes and then daydreaming about something fun that could happen was helpful.

Who did you have in mind while writing the script?
Bruce Willis. [Laughs.] No, I tried not to get my heart set on someone in particular too much, but I was really hopeful it would be two funny women and not, like, two hot women who are not funny. I remember when I first met with the producers, they were like, "You know, Sandy and Melissa are looking to do a movie together. What do you think about that?" I was like, "Sandy? Sandy Bullock? Sure. Let's get Sandy on the phone. That sounds great." So that was very exciting.

How did you find the whole pitching process in this post-"Bridesmaids" world?
I got very lucky. Because it all happened so fast, I got to skip a lot of that thing. I think because of "Bridesmaids," this process has been a lot easier. I have no idea what would have happened without "Bridesmaids." That, also, is such a weird thing for me. I remember before "Bridesmaids" came out, if you had an idea for a female comedy, the general talk was, "We should wait to see how 'Bridesmaids' does." Which is crazy to think that so much banked on that movie. As if, "Bridesmaids" had bombed, people would be like, "Well, we tried. That's it! It's over! Maybe in another hundred years, we'll give it a shot."

Are you worried that if "The Heat" fails, studios will be reluctant to make other female-led comedies?
I hope not. I know that could be how a lot of people think, but I would just disagree with it. I feel like everyone knows that there are so many strong female comedians right now who could star in any movie and be amazing. So, I would hate for people to think that [studios would be reluctant to make more female comedies]. But I live in terror every day of my life anyway. This is just a whole other level.

You've got two other scripts that Paul will produce: a mother-daughter adventure and a possible sequel for "The Heat."
I have full treatments for both of them. I've been working both at the same time, because we still don't know what will happen with "The Heat." If the movie is not a big hit, then there won't be a sequel. So I'm going back and forth between the two.

What are you planning for the sequel?
I really like the idea we have for the sequel. I'm really excited about it. I can't say what it is. I wish I could. I really wish I could, but I can't: I would be immediately fired and murdered. But I really think it could be so fun. So I'm hopeful that we get to do it.

Diabetes Drug Company Suspends Partnership With Paula Deen

In a stunning reversal, pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk announced today that it will "suspend" its partnership with Paula Deen.

Novo Nordisk manufactures the diabetes drug Victoza, which Deen has controversially promoted since announcing in 2012 that she suffered from Type II diabetes. Deen, known for her butter-laden recipes, was roundly labeled as a hypocrite for cashing in on her illness while also promoting unhealthy recipes.

Eater has a full statement from Novo Nordisk, seen below:

Novo Nordisk and Paula Deen have mutually agreed to suspend our patient education activities for now, while she takes time to focus her attention where it is needed.

Novo Nordisk would like to acknowledge Paula's involvement in our Diabetes in a New Light™ campaign, where she has helped make many people aware of type 2 diabetes and the lifestyle changes needed to control this serious disease.

The company had originally stated that it had no plans to drop Deen. That may be still be case, but it's unclear what "suspend" means -- a timeline was not provided. When asked if Novo Nordisk might reinstate its relationship with Deen, a representative told Eater that its current agreement "gives us that option, yes, but it's too early to say."

Despite the announcement, Novo Nordisk's web sites are still all decked out in Deen:

The start of Nine Inch Nail's new video for "Came Back Haunted" comes with a viewer-direction warning: "This video has been identified to potentially trigger seizures for people with photosensitive epilepsy." What follows are a lot of rapid flashes of color, fast-motion camerawork and shifting images set to the song's pulsating beat.

David Lynch directed the video in his first collaboration with Trent Reznor since the 1997 "Lost Highway" soundtrack. "Haunted" is the first single from the band since 2008's "Discipline." It will lead the charge on NIN's upcoming album "Hesitation Marks," out Sept. 3.

Fewer Pixar Sequels Coming

Those longing for "A Bug's Life 2" or "The Incredibles Return" should place their hopes elsewhere for now. Pixar's president has revealed that the studio will cut back on its emphasis on sequels -- one of which, "Monsters University," is in theaters now -- and instead focus on only one original feature per year.

"Every once in a while, we get a film where we want or people want to see something continuing in that world -- which is the rationale behind the sequel," Ed Catmull reportedly told BuzzFeed. "They want those characters, which means we were successful with them. But if you keep doing that, then you aren’t doing original films.”

While the "Toy Story" trilogy was an immense success both commercially and critically, "Cars 2" by far ranks as Pixar's lowest-rated release to date, earning a dismal 38-percent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. "Monsters University" saw a successful opening weekend at the box office but holds a 77-percent rating -- a mediocre figure for a Pixar entry, as the studio's 14 movies average 88 percent.

The critical success of "Finding Nemo" follow-up "Finding Dory" won't be seen until November 2015. In the meantime, no other Pixar sequels are in the works -- although that doesn't mean none will come.

“We’re going to have an original film every year, then every other year have a sequel to something,” Catmull revealed. “That’s the rough idea.”

In keeping, "Inside Out," which takes a peek inside the mind of a young girl, will share the calendar year with "Finding Dory." The next Pixar entry, 2014's "The Good Dinosaur," has no sequel planned alongside it.

Mayim Bialik won't let divorce get her down.

The 37-year-old "The Big Bang Theory" star spent her first post-divorce vacation in Villa La Estancia in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. Bialik finalized her divorce with Michael Stone at the end of May. Since that time, Bialik has been keeping busy reflecting on Jewish divorce on her Jewish parenting blog, Kveller.

While last year she visited the spot with her then-husband, this year it was just Mayim, her two boys, Miles, 7, and Fred, 4, her "oldest bestie" and her daughter. She couldn't be happier, either! "We swam in the pool, admired iguanas who lived near the hotel, ate more guacamole than I care to admit, and took a boat trip to a private beach," Bialik writes. She even enjoyed some delicious cerveza.

Looks like post-divorce life is off to a pretty good start for Bialik. She's enjoying herself and she's not turning back!

Three days before legendary gay icon Cher is set to perform at NYC Pride's annual Dance on the Pier, she made an appearance at Marquee's Thursday Q party to promote her new single, "Woman's World".

During the party, the "Believe" singer thanked gay fans for sticking with her throughout her career.

"From the bottom of my heart, I mean this. I've had ups and downs in my career and you guys have never left me," she said before singing and dancing to her own tunes.

"I was out, I was uncool, I was whatever -- a has-been, but you guys have always been there... I never thought I would be around this long."

In the midst of the memorable appearance, Out Magazine's Evan Mulvihill was lucky enough to snag an interview with the icon.

During the interview, Cher spoke about her reaction to DOMA being stuck down, Amanda Bynes and more.

"We were screaming," the legend said in regards to her response to the Supreme Court's historic decision.

She then added, "I had a lot of gay friends that were texting me and tweeting me and calling. It’s something that, really, I don’t really understand how we had it in the first place. Like, how did people get away with that kind of sh*t?"

Carla Bruni Returns To Pop Star Mode

$

0

NEW YORK — Gone are the prim (but stylish) Dior suits and sheath dresses worn by the first lady of France. Carla Bruni is back in pop-star mode, in a uniform of skinny jeans and cute little boots, toting a guitar.

The singer, who's been promoting her new album, "Little French Songs," in New York this week and excitedly announcing her first U.S. tour, says she's happy about her return to her former life – though she insists, "I never really left it, you know?"

But Bruni, who left the Elysee Palace in Paris with the electoral defeat of her husband, President Nicolas Sarkozy, in 2012, is still political enough not to rule anything out. Namely, another Sarkozy presidential run – an eventuality being discussed in France by opponents of current President Francois Hollande.

"Well," she says carefully about that possibility. "It's not current. You know? I don't think we can really talk about it today ... We go on with our life."

"Politics are a special world with special rules," she adds. "And so ... they talk about it, but it's just to fill up the press a little bit, you know?"

In an interview in a New York hotel room, Bruni prefers to talk about her album – it came out here in April, but an earlier promotional trip was canceled due to illness – and her just-announced U.S. tour early next year.

"It's fantastic! I never did a tour in the United States, I never even toured in Europe," she says. "I hope people will come. For a French artist or Italian artist it's really rare and it's lucky."

Bruni is aware that few people can look at her solely as a musician, but rather as a woman with a fascinating trajectory: an Italian-born supermodel turned songstress, famous for dalliances with Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton, who later engaged in a whirlwind courtship and marriage to the French president that transfixed the country.

She says all that doesn't bother her.

"What bothers me would be indifference," she says. "There's plenty of talented people, geniuses everywhere that have no chance to talk about their work, to show their work. So I don't really suffer from getting attention."

Much attention has indeed been paid to Bruni's marriage – with the snarkiest commentary speculating on how long it would last, past Sarkozy's presidency. But Bruni speaks freely and frequently in the interview of how much she loves her husband, whom she calls "my man." She also calls him "Raymond" – in a song on her album, called "Mon Raymond."

"It's a love song so obviously it's about my husband," Bruni says about the number, which playfully likens her man to a pirate, albeit in a necktie. "But you only get it if you listen to it. So of course some of the media (don't get it) and I understand that."

Along with jump-starting her singing career, Bruni, 45, has also been returning to modeling – she is a new face for Bulgari. And she's a new mother again, with an 18-month old daughter, Giulia, at home, joining her 12-year-old son, Aurelien, from a previous relationship. (Her husband has three other children, two of them adults, from his first two marriages.)

"Motherhood is just like the most incredible, difficult thing," she says. "Wonderful and difficult at the same time. You're always wondering if you're doing it right. But probably of course it's the biggest joy I ever had."

She speaks of her time as first lady almost as if it were a strange dream.

"I guess I was a little naive," she says. "I just fell in love with him and we got married, and poof! But what surprised me the most was I could really use that position for helping other people, and that was great. Also what was great was to meet some people that are exceptional, to me."

Who was the most interesting? "Maybe one of the most incredible moments for me was when we went to South Africa and we met Nelson Mandela," she says of the 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader and former president, lying critically ill now in a Pretoria hospital. "It was so moving to meet him, so kind, so gentle ... it was a great moment."

And how about Barack and Michelle Obama? Bruni calls the couple "very, very kind people and very simple people. She is very kind and very relaxed and very normal so that's how I felt about meeting them. At that level of power, being the president of the United States and being a really nice human being – it's good."

But with all the high-profile encounters, Bruni says, "It's nice to leave public life. It's nice to leave actually the stress of the weight and the responsibilities."

Of course, Bruni is still a very public figure. Promoting her album this week, she appeared at a private party at the tony Royalton Hotel, singing three of her songs, including "Chez Keith et Anita," a song about hanging out in the `70s with Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards and his girlfriend, Anita Pallenberg. In Paris, glamour shots of the former first lady are appearing on billboards. In December, remarks she made to French Vogue appearing to dismiss feminism sparked a Twitter uproar.

But Bruni says she craves a quiet, private existence.

"I'm not a very outside person," she says. "Even at 15, I was never a party girl. My favorite things to do are to play music, read, watch films, write, and cook – and those are all things you do at home. I don't know, maybe it's my astrological sign?" She laughs. "I'm a Capricorn. I don't know. I just said that to sound silly."

For now, Bruni seems pleased with the life she leads, and confident that the public will see her for what she is.

"I like that there's something double about the inside life and the outside life," she says. "I've been in the media since I'm 20 years old ... I feel there's this girl called Carla Bruni who's not at all exactly like me. But I do believe that the real person comes out. I believe that people see the truth."
