The Smartest 'Dumbest' Blonde Ever?

$
0
0

When we think of famous mid-century blondes, two names immediately come to mind: Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly. Jayne Mansfield? Not so much.

But to me, Mansfield was so iconically 1950's/early 1960's that it almost seemed like she was manufactured expressly for that era. Her hair was not just blonde, but a butter-hued confection of perfect waves. Her body was almost freakishly curvaceous in shape, with an impossibly tiny waist that would, today, start terrible rumors of bizarre surgery. If she were anything else instead of a pin-up or actress, it would have seemed like a misuse of her natural resources. (Humor me for a moment and imagine Jayne Mansfield as a teacher or a secretary, the predominant careers for women at the time.) She played to type, focusing on "dumb blonde" roles in movies such as the delightful "Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?" After her death in 1967, Roger Ebert summarized Mansfield as the following:

She was a stereotype, almost a caricature, of the dumb blond: bigger, blonder, dumber, more publicity-conscious than any who had gone before.

However, Mansfield was proof that you couldn't judge this book by the cover: Her IQ was rumored to be in the 160 range and she could speak five languages. So if she would have gone in another industry, Mansfield might have been the Hedy Lamarr of her era. Who knows?

Sure, she most certainly influenced Anna Nicole Smith, but I think we can all agree that while Smith certainly had Mansfield's look, she didn't have the rest of the package. Mansfield wasn't just a model and Playmate, but a Broadway, television and film star, after all. And she could sing. Fun fact: She recorded two songs, "Suey" and "As The Clouds Drift By," with Jimi Hendrix.

On April 19th, Mansfield would have been 80. Let's take a moment to check out her most glamorous looks in the slideshow below. And, don't miss out on the visual feast that was her home (seriously, it had a heart-shaped pool) over on HuffPost Home.

'The Bachelor' Is Getting A Lot More Ridiculous

Fantastic news, rose lovers! Though ABC spat upon our hopes and dreams by not renewing Bachelor Pad for a fourth season, the network is about to announce a small peace offering to Bachelor Nation: a bloopers special! Hosted by Chris Harrison, the one-hour special called The Bachelor’s Funniest Moments (airing May 21 at 8 p.m.) will feature goofs, gaffes and general hilarity spanning all 17 seasons of The Bachelor and 8 season of The Bachelorette. As fans know, Bachelor bloopers — usually only seen during the Women Tell All specials — can be extremely illuminating, and often reveal a hidden layer of actual personality underneath the Bachelor’s Ken-doll facade. (I’m looking at you, Brad Womack.) Also, it’s just fun to watch contestants like Tierra almost get decapitated by a boom mic and see Chris Harrison swear a blue streak, as he did in the most recent Bachelor blooper reel. Zack Rosen: The Nowhere Boy: Mika Finds Confidence In Coming Out

2013-04-18-MikaSHOT1_025.jpgGay pop superstar Mika blasted out of the gates in 2007 with the indelible mission statement "Grace Kelly" and a Swiss-cheese view from inside the closet. Six years later he is firmly out and boasting a new elevator pitch in the title track of last year's Origin of Love.

Where "Kelly" traded in to-the-rafters choruses and obfuscating winks toward identity politics, "Love" cuts the theatrics and trusts its universal metaphor of "attraction is addiction" as a solid emotional lead-in to an album of intellectual pop love songs.

Where Mika was once a jumbo pack of sour-centered bubblegum, he's now a candy befitting his upcoming 30th birthday -- say, a vegan gummybear at the bottom of a kombucha bottle: sweet, sustainable, effervescent and with an unexpected resonance. The singer recently completed a small U.S. tour, including Washington, D.C.'s ultra-polite 6th and I Synagogue, further proving that a pop star can change his stripes.

This interview was done over the phone on April 5, 2013.

Zack Rosen: Is it safe to say you've grown up a little since you first released Life in Cartoon Motion in 2007?

Mika: I do most of my growing up on my record. As I move on, as I develop my songwriting, and as my life evolves, it's always going to be captured in the records. I like to stay true to myself and not buy a different persona. Strangely, I feel that I become increasingly reclusive in my normal life and more open and candid in my music.

Rosen: Your second album, The Boy Who Knew Too Much, seemed really nervy and jagged. It sounded to me like someone backing down.

Mika: The second album is part two of the first. The first is pinks and greens, and the second is a similar layout but in blue and purple. They were bookending each other. This new one, The Origin of Love, is a different thing. It's like a new movie.

Rosen: How do you feel about your first single, "Grace Kelly," six years out?

Mika: I feel exactly the same about it. It was a perfect representation of me as a 23-year-old. Because they are my songs and born from real life, they represent something real, not songwriter purchases. It helps them age gracefully. This whole thing about turning 30, everyone keeps haranguing me about it. I say I have a midlife crisis every time I start and finish a record.

Rosen: Are you still "identity mad"?

Mika: I have no idea who I am. I'm "The Nowhere Boy." I was brought up in many different cultures, moving around all the time, and I find my identity in my songs. I project the identity I want to have throughout the songs that I write. Identity for me is something that has to be played with and explored, and not become complacent about or uninterested in.

Rosen: Did coming out free you to expand who you are as a musician?

Mika: There was a de-complexing that happened in my life. I got to a point where I'm really happy. Not on a daily basis; I don't skip to the coffee shop. I'm not that kind of person. I was happy with the freedom I had to write what I write. It got to the stage where I said, "I've earned this myself." I've been given lots of guidance and help in getting to the stage where I'm comfortable in my skin, not hating my surroundings or feeling powerless, so I'm writing the songs that recognize that.

Rosen: Who gave you guidance?

Mika: I had a teacher at school who basically made it his mission to always get me out of trouble. He was the librarian at my school, a very eccentric Englishman who moved to Australia and lives in Scotland, I believe. He saw I was having trouble conforming not only with stuff like making friends but in my work. I was having a tough time keeping up with this tough academic school. He made up a sport for me that got me off school two afternoons a week. He used to pretend I was working in the library, but then he would book me a music room, and I'd write songs and show him the stuff I was making. He gave me space to not conform, and get away with it.

Rosen: What's his name? He might like to know that you remember him.

Mika: Hugh Eveleigh, the former librarian at Westminster School. He was amazing. There's people who look out for oddity, and instead of punishing it, they help it, and so many people have done that along the way for me. I guess what I'm saying is that all of that has to do with tolerance, being able to look at life in a slightly different way and be allowed to do so.

[We get sidetracked talking about the nature of celebrity. Mika checks back in with this:]

Mika: I did a show last night in Philly at the Union Transfer. Someone was smoking the most nasty chronic pot in the front row, and all the smoke was coming on stage. Normally that doesn't bother me, but this was so chemically enhanced, and it blocked my brain, and I couldn't remember any of my lyrics and couldn't keep time on my piano. Only the front section understood what was happening. I was singing my song "Popular," and I stopped it three times. I got to the second verse three times and forgot what was supposed to happen next. I felt like I was 14 on a camping trip, smoking for the first time. Whoever was smoking that shit needs to sort themselves out.

Rosen: What's your favorite song on Origin of Love?

Mika: A song that no one knows, "Heroes." It's based on an A. E. Housman poem called "The Lads and Their Hundreds to Ludlow Come Into the Fair," from the First World War. Most of a generation of young men were wiped out in the UK. Housman describes these men and how almost all of them will never come back, will die in their glory and never return. I was reading an article about the Army recruitment process in America, how so many people are being recruited from other countries at 19 years old in exchange for security and education and money for their families. They have no idea about the history or geography of the country, fighting a war they don't understand. I reinterpreted this Housman poem; I tried to make a modern version of it and put it on a pop record. The idea of the album is that it's a collection of love songs. Happy, bitter. Love songs about religion, about sexuality, about a mother and her son, one like this about a soldier that you've never met. Lyrically, I like that.

The Funny Word Katy Perry Used To Describe Her Split

Katy Perry has clearly moved on from her very public 2011 divorce from Russell Brand.

When asked about her post-split anthems "Wide Awake" and "Part of Me" at Thursday's American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Expo in Hollywood, Calif., the pop star shrugged off talk of what she referred to as "The Big D."

“It’s a very tiny elephant [in the room]," she said. "It's like a little tchotchke now.”

Brand filed for divorce from Perry in December 2011 after 14 months of marriage. The former couple finalized their split in July 2012.

Since then, both Perry and Brand have shown signs of moving on. The "Firework" singer was in an eight month on-and-off relationship with notorious rebound man John Mayer that began last summer and came to an end in March 2013.

Brand has also been keeping himself busy in the dating department. The "Brand X" host has been romantically linked to a number of women including Isabella Brewster, Geri Halliwell and model Nikolett Barabas.

Earlier this month, rumors began to swirl that Perry and Brand were reconciling after they were reportedly spotted making out at Soho House in West Hollywood. Perry later shot down the rumors on Twitter, writing, "Gross! As if!"

'Hannibal' Episode Yanked From The Air

LOS ANGELES — NBC said Friday that it's pulling an episode of its serial killer drama "Hannibal" out of sensitivity to recent violence, including the Boston bombings.

The episode that was to air next week features a character, played by guest star Molly Shannon, who brainwashes children to kill other children.

"Hannibal" executive producer Bryan Fuller asked NBC to pull the episode, citing the Newtown, Conn., school shooting in December and this week's Boston Marathon attack, NBC spokesman Stuart Levine said.

Fuller said Friday that he began talking with NBC executives several weeks ago about keeping the episode off the air. His concern was prompted by Newtown and reinforced by Monday's violence, he said.

Although the "Hannibal" story is unrelated to real-world events, the intent was "to be sensitive to where we are as a nation," Fuller said.

The episode, the fourth for the freshman series, will be replaced by another "Hannibal" hour. Viewers will not see a plot continuity issue, Levine said.

But a "clip package" with scenes from the unaired episode will be available at NBC.com next week, without the scenes of child violence and with commentary by Fuller. That will allow viewers to keep current with the show's larger story arcs, the producer said.

"Hannibal" stars Mads Mikkelsen as the title character, the brilliant cannibalistic killer seen on the big screen in "The Silence of the Lambs" and its sequel and introduced in the Thomas Harris novel "Red Dragon." Hugh Dancy and Laurence Fishburne also star in the drama.

There have been other instances of networks responding quickly to the potentially difficult overlap between fact and fiction.

ABC has delayed airing an episode of the crime drama "Castle" in which a main character, New York police Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic), steps on a pressure-sensitive bomb. It had been scheduled to air next Monday, one week after two bombs exploded near the Boston Marathon finish line, killing three people and injuring more than 180.

"Out of respect," Katic tweeted Wednesday.

Last December, after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, the Syfy channel pulled an episode of the series "Haven" that featured a campus violence story line.

Kim Kardashian Is Officially Divorced

LOS ANGELES — The marriage of Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries, which began with a storybook wedding, ended Friday in a grim courtroom with a judge approving a divorce settlement after a protracted legal battle between the former couple.

"I think this is a reasonable way to resolve this case," said Superior Court Judge Hank Goldberg, who did not disclose terms of the settlement.

Humphries sent his lawyer but did not appear in court. Kardashian, who is pregnant with a child by her boyfriend Kanye West, appeared in a black silk puffy sleeveless maternity dress embellished with sequins on the skirt.

"Ms. Kardashian, is this your signature?" the judge asked her as he perused a three-page settlement agreement.

"Yes," she replied. She continued to answer yes when asked if she had discussed the matter with her attorney and understood that there would be no trial.

"During your marriage did irreconcilable differences occur?" the judge asked.

"Yes," said Kardashian.

"Is there any way your marriage can be saved?" he asked.

"No," said Kardashian.

She married the NBA player in a high-profile wedding in August 2011. She filed for divorce later that year.

He sought an annulment claiming their marriage in an elaborate wedding ceremony was a fraud staged for her reality show, "Keeping Up With the Kardashians."

She denied the allegations and insisted on a traditional divorce. She apparently won.

"The court is going to grant dissolution of marriage," the judge said, advising that the divorce would not be final until papers are drawn up and signed.

Humphries did not attend the brief hearing. His lawyer, Benjamin Johnson, said he agreed to the settlement. The judge dropped an order for the Brooklyn Nets power forward to appear and explain why he failed to attend a previous hearing.

Kardashian was hustled into court by sheriff's deputies through a back entrance and no photos were allowed.

The judge congratulated Johnson and Kardashian's attorney, Laura Wasser, for achieving the settlement.

"I wish both parties the best of luck as they move forward with their lives," he said.

Juno Host Michael Bublé: 'There'll Be People Who Can't Stand Me'

If Michael Bublé gets a little risque while hosting the 42nd Juno Awards this Sunday, April 21 in Regina, SK, don't say you weren't forewarned.

After all, this is the man who announced he was hosting the Canadian awards show with a video of himself in the middle of a threesome sandwich with Chavril, Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger.

To hear Bublé tell it, though, he's just a working guy trying to maintain a standard set by previous Juno hosts.

"Truth is I'm a traffic cop for a lot of it," says Bublé in a Canadian Press video. "And it's a huge honour. I look back at the hosts of these last few years, I thought Russell did a great job, Russell Peters, I thought Drake was incredible, I really did, he blew me away, Shatner was weird and quirky and I thought was good, too.

"So I've got big shoes to fill."

The crooner says he's got some jokes lined up for the show. And if they bomb in certain quarters he's prepared for that, too.

"No matter how good I do or how funny it is there'll be people who can't stand me."

Looks like Aaron Paul has a wedding singer -- British pop star Ellie Goulding!

The "Breaking Bad" actor, who has been engaged to activist Lauren Parsekian since January 2012, took to Twitter Thursday to make the request.

"Hey @elliegoulding hope your day is going beautifully. Quick question, would you like to play at my wedding? Say yes," Paul tweeted.

Goulding quickly responded, "@aaronpaul_8 ok" and then, "@aaronpaul_8 um soooo... When is it?"

"@elliegoulding said yes everyone!!! Call me for details and also let me know where I can send over a giant bribe gift. You're amazing," an excited Paul tweeted back. “Wedding is next month and you're awesome. Where should I deliver my first born?"

Sandra Bullock Sends Her Support, Warm Words To People Of Boston

Sandra Bullock has joined the many celebrities who have reached out to Boston after all the city has to endure this week.

"That city is made up of amazing, strong, loyal, kind, giving people and you saw that once everything happened," Bullock told Access Hollywood at CinemaCon in Las Vegas yesterday. "You saw the amount of people that rushed into the danger and just helped everyone. All tragedies -- it brings out the best in people and you just see what a great, great, great place Boston is."

The Academy Award-winning actress spent a few months in Boston last summer filming "The Heat," her newest cop comedy with Melissa McCarthy. The crew received "a lot of help from law enforcement there," per CNN.

McCarthy also had only good things to say about the city that recently hosted them. "It's a remarkable place, an amazing city that's obviously going through a really tough situation," McCarthy said yesterday. "I have a sweet spot for it now."

Director Paul Feig, who directed "Bridesmaids" as well as "The Heat," said he is setting up a Boston screening for the city's first responders. "The Heat" is slated to come out June 28, and Bullock said the idea of a special screening is a "great" one.

"The movie is such a love letter to Boston," said Feig. "A lot of our cast are Boston people, either born or raised. So we really would like to support that city. I love that city."

Major 'Will & Grace' Fail

Debra Messing's "Will & Grace" knowledge was put to the test "Whose Line Is It Anyway"-style this week.

While the actress appeared on "Katie" this week, audience members read one-liners from the sitcom and asked Messing to name the character who said them. Embarrassingly enough, she answered them all incorrectly except for two.

While she may have forgotten a few of the "Will & Grace" details, she certainly still has a soft spot for Grace Adler. Just last month, the actress caught up with The Huffington Post and talked about what she thought the characters would be up to today.

"I would hope that all the characters had found some love at some point, but you know, it’s a comedy," Messing said. "So happiness does not equal laughter most of the time on TV."

"Katie" airs on weekdays. Check your local listings for more information.

You'll Never Guess Who Interrupted Justin's Wedding Speech

Jimmy Fallon can't help being a comedian -- even during Justin Timberlake's wedding.

Fallon interrupted Timberlake's speech at his wedding to Jessica Biel, Timberlake wrote in an essay about Fallon published Thursday in "Time" magazine's 2013 "100 Most Influential People" feature.

"Picture this: I’m in the heart of an impromptu speech at my wedding reception in front of 150 guests, pouring it out to my lovely new bride. You could hear a pin drop. I paused for just a moment in between thoughts. And then there was Jimmy, shouting a joke from his seat, sparking an improv between the two of us that went on for a good five or 10 minutes and had all our guests roaring with laughter," Timberlake wrote.

"Interrupting the groom’s speech at the wedding reception? Cracking jokes when your buddy is looking desperately for the words to say that he hopes his wife will remember forever? It turned into a moment that everyone there will remember forever."

Timberlake married Biel in Italy in October 2012. He and Fallon have been friends since they met at the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards, and have since appeared together on "Saturday Night Live" and "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon."

Timberlake and Biel may have a romance, but Timberlake and Fallon definitely have a "bromance." Click through the slideshow below to see other celebrity bromances.

TNT Is Sorry For Airing Rerun Of 'Castle' Bombing Episode

On Thursday night, just a few days after tragedy struck in Boston, TNT aired a rerun of the "Castle" episode "47 Seconds," a 2012 installment that centered on a bombing at an Occupy Wall Street-like protest.

In the Season 4 episode, which originally aired on March 26, 2012, Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Beckett (Stana Katic) realize that the key to investigating the bombing was to reconstruct the 47 seconds prior to the explosion, which killed five people. "Their future, their plans, everything is just gone in a flash,” Castle eerily said in the episode. “It makes you think about those things in your own life that you don't want to put off anymore ... " Beckett confessed.

"Castle" fans were disturbed to see the rerun on TNT on Thursday and confused as well, considering ABC postponed an upcoming episode of "Castle" called "Still," which features Beckett stepping on a pressure sensitive bomb. "Still" sees the team search for a way to disarm the explosive, while Castle argues with Beckett about who fell for whom first in an effort to distract her from the life-threatening situation.

TNT has since issued an apology to "Castle" fans, according to Rob Moynihan of TV Guide Magazine.

Check out fan reactions to TNT's airing of the "Castle" bombing episode.

New episodes of "Castle" air Mondays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.

Taking to Twitter Friday, the actress, who was born and raised in Watertown, Mass., expressed her concern for her friends and family members who were stranded in the 20-block perimeter cordoned off by police in the Boston suburb.

Dushku joins the multitude of celebrities who have spoken out about the bombings and expressed support for the people of Boston. Bradley Cooper, currently on location in Massachusetts, took a break from filming to visit survivors of the attack at a local hospital Thursday.

Could There Be A 'Dexter' Spinoff?

$

"Dexter's" eighth season will be its last, but that doesn't mean that we're definitively leaving the show's universe for good.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Showtime entertainment president David Nevins confirmed that while "there's nothing actively happening" in terms of a spinoff centered on Dexter's sister, Deb (Jennifer Carpenter), "I won't rule it out."

He continued, "This is a core franchise to us and all options are on the table as to where it could go after this ... We need to get through this season and see how the dust settles and then see where we go from there."

Nevins also told THR that the theme of "change" would be a driving force in the final season: "The consequences are already starting to hit him. It's jeopardized his most important relationship on Earth, which is with his sister; his other relationships on the show will be touched this year and he's still changing ... 'Dexter' changed its formula last year and will change again this year -- there's a lot of different things in play. Part of what you need to do in a finale is start bringing some of the different threads together: his sister, his son, his love life, his professional life and his childhood trauma."

Showtime announced that Season 8 would be "Dexter's" final year earlier this week, but the news was a long time coming, with everyone from executive producer Sara Colleton to CBS CEO Les Moonves admitting that the creative team has been planning this season as the show's endgame.

"We wanted to end it [after Season 7], but the network convinced us that it would be best to do it in two years," Colleton told TV Guide last June, before Season 7 premiered. "In some ways, this is a two-season series-ender. We have worked that out and know where it's going to end. Next year will definitely be the last year of 'Dexter.' Absolutely."

In preparation for "Dexter's" final season, Showtime has released a two-minute preview, which you can view below:

"Dexter's" eighth and final season premieres on Sunday, June 30 at 9 p.m. ET on Showtime.
