Rhythm Guitarist For Elvis Presley Dies At 67

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Rhythm guitar player John Wilkinson, who performed with Elvis Presley more than a thousand times, has died at his home in southwest Missouri. He was 67.

Wilkinson passed away Friday at his home in Springfield after a fight with cancer, according to a family spokesman and the Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. Priscilla and Lisa Marie Presley offered their "deepest sympathy" to his family, saying in a statement that "John and the beautiful music he made with Elvis will live forever in our hearts."

Wilkinson first met Elvis Presley when he was 10 years old after sneaking into his dressing room before a show at the Shrine Mosque in Springfield. He amused Presley when he told him, "You can't play guitar worth a damn."

Family friend and spokesman Gary Ellison said a Springfield history museum recalled the pair's meeting in an exhibit that ran until about three weeks ago.

"John loved to tell that story," Ellison, a fellow musician, said Friday.

After the chance meeting, Wilkinson developed a name for himself as a singer and guitarist, performing with such groups as The New Christy Minstrels.

He was 23 when Presley saw him perform on a television show in Los Angeles in 1968, and asked him to join the TCB Band – not knowing he was the youngster who insulted his playing a decade earlier, Ellison recalled.

Wilkinson went on to play 1,200 shows as Presley's rhythm guitar player until the legendary singer's death in 1977.

"John considered Elvis more as a friend than as a boss," Ellison said.

Even after suffering a stroke in 1989 that left him unable to play the guitar, Wilkinson continued singing with fellow musicians, including the old TCB Band (the acronym stood for Taking Care of Business), and also made a living in retail and airline services management.

"He was honestly one of the best acoustic guitar players I'd ever heard," Ellison recalled, adding that Wilkinson kept in touch with many of the performers from the folk music era in the late 1960s and early `70s.

A statement from the family, released through Ellison, said Wilkinson also was proud of the fact that he never turned down a request for an autograph.

"It didn't matter if he was meeting adoring fans, joking with Chuck Berry about keeping his B-string in tune, or if he was talking to a neighbor about her dog, people were people to him," the statement said.

"Folks were folks. John would look you square in the eye and accept you, just as you were. There was nothing phony about him."

He is survived by his wife, Terry. A private graveside service is planned.

Why 'McDreamy' Is So Happy

SEATTLE — The auction for the beleaguered Tully's Coffee chain concluded Friday in federal bankruptcy court, with a judge approving the sale to an ownership group led by actor Patrick Dempsey.

Dempsey – dubbed "McDreamy" in the hospital drama "Grey's Anatomy" – had claimed victory last week after bidding concluded, but a company that teamed up with Starbucks to make an offer for Tully's filed an objection.

AgriNurture Inc. had said it was still willing to proceed with its combined bid with Starbucks Corp. of about $10.6 million. The bid from Dempsey's company, Global Baristas LLC, was for $9.2 million.

At a hearing Friday afternoon, Judge Karen Overstreet said the Jan. 4 auction was fair and no mistakes had been made.

Dempsey said he was "thrilled that we prevailed."

"I've been deeply humbled by the outpouring of support from the city of Seattle and am very proud to be a new business owner in this amazing city," he said in a statement. "We have a lot to accomplish over the next few months and years, and I am excited to now call Seattle my second home."

Starbucks spokesman Zack Hutson said the company respected the judge's decision.

Starbucks had wanted to buy about half of Tully's 47 shops in Washington and California and turn them into Starbucks stores, while the rest of the company would keep the Tully's name under the ownership of AgriNurture, which is based in the Philippines.

One reason Tully's owner TC Global Inc. didn't pick the Starbucks-AgriNurture deal was the complicated relationship Tully's has with Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. Green Mountain owns the wholesale side of Tully's brand, which includes coffee in bags and single-serve packs that are sold in supermarkets and other stores.

Green Mountain preferred to keep the chain of coffee shops intact and operating under the Tully's name.

Lawyers for Tully's and its creditors also expressed concern about what would happen to some company contracts, including a multi-million dollar commitment to people who bought prepaid coffee cards.

At the conclusion of Friday's hearing that lasted several hours, Overstreet said the auction and the arguments presented by all sides were intricate, but it was not her job to second-guess the decision made by Tully's executives to accept Dempsey's bid.

"Was it complicated? Yes. Did it produce a fantastic result for this case? Yes it did," Overstreet said.

TC Global filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in October, citing lease obligations and underperforming stores. It has more than 500 employees.

CEO Scott Pearson said the sale, which is expected to close by the end of January, was a "step forward" for the company.

"I think the best part of it is we're taking care of our creditors and our employees and actually giving something back to our shareholders," Pearson said.

Dempsey has said he believes there is room in Seattle for Tully's and the much larger Starbucks, which is also based there.

After winning the auction last week, Dempsey made an appearance at a Tully's near Pike Place Market, shaking hands with workers and greeting customers before visiting other stores.

Celebrities Who Remind Us Of 'Girls' Characters

While the likability of the title foursome on HBO's "Girls" has proved a polarizing topic, we'll admit that we see facets of our own personality in each of the ladies. And we think most can relate in one way or another to bold, bohemian Jessa; polished, put-together Marnie; inexperienced girly-girl Shoshanna and self-obsessed wannabe-memoirist Hannah. And celebrities likely can too. Here are some who remind us of "Girls" characters.

Who's Bradley Cooper Taking To The Oscars?

Bradley Cooper is pulling a Ryan Gosling.

The actor, 38, who is nominated for both a Golden Globe and an Oscar for his role in "Silver Linings Playbook," revealed to E! News that he's taking his mom Gloria as his date to the Academy Awards on Feb. 24. (Gosling is a fan of this move).

"Oh, yeah, that was done," Cooper told E! on the red carpet at the Critic's Choice Awards on Jan. 10, adding, "One night, when I started the profession, [mom said] 'If you ever [get nominated] I am the date." (Cooper reportedly split with on-again-off-again girlfriend Zoe Saldana).

As for what Gloria thought of her son's coveted Oscars nomination, Cooper said "she was freaking out." But, was he?

"When David O. [Russell] got nominated [for Best Director] I got emotional because he put his whole heart into this movie and every frame, and the DGA didn't recognize him, so ... I was so happy and he was the first name they said," Cooper recalled. "So, I was reeling from that and by the time my name came around ... I didn't make any reaction!"

Bradley will walk the red carpet at the Golden Globe Awards, airing Jan. 13 at 8 p.m. EST.

Oscar Buzz Bumps 'Zero Dark Thirty'

The Friday box office estimates for "Zero Dark Thirty" are in and they are looking good. While it has been playing in limited theaters since Dec. 19, the controversial Kathryn Bigelow movie had its wide release on Friday. "Zero Dark Thirty" made $9 million across 2,937 theaters. The torture scenes in the movie have been the subject of debate, with the most recent input from Sony co-chair Amy Pascal. "'Zero Dark Thirty' does not advocate torture," Pascal said, TheWrap.com reports. "To not include that part of history would have been irresponsible and inaccurate. We fully support [director] Kathryn Bigelow and [screenwriter] Mark Boal and stand behind this extraordinary movie." The controversy didn't keep "Zero Dark Thirty" from receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Picture on Thursday. The movie has now made a total of $14.4 million.

After a $23 million weekend last week, "Texas Chainsaw 3D" dropped to eighth place, making just $1.8 million on Friday. "Texas Chainsaw" was replaced by a horror film parody, "A Haunted House." The spoof, starring Marlon Wayans, took the number two spot on Friday, making $6.7 million across 2,160 theaters.

Coming in at number three is Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone's "Gangster Squad." The crime movie, which also features Sean Penn and Josh Brolin, had a $6.6 million opening Friday at 3,103 theaters. Despite its strong cast, "Gangster Squad" has received mixed reviews.

"Django Unchained" and "Les Miserables" continued successful box office runs, coming in at number four and five, respectively. Quentin Tarantino's "Django," which has also seen its fair share of controversy, made $3.4 million on Friday across 3,012 theaters. The movie has now made a total of $117.7 million since its Dec. 25 release. "Les Miserables," which stars Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, and Amanda Seyfried, made $2.8 million for a total gross of $111.8 million. Both films received nominations for the Academy Award for Best Picture on Thursday.

Sofia Vergara Is Already Predicting A Globes Wardrobe Malfunction

Between her many nominations and choices of glamorous dresses, awards season is an exciting time time for "Modern Family" actress Sofia Vergara.

But Vergara, who has now scored three Golden Globe and three Emmy nods for her portrayal of Colombian-born bombshell Gloria on "Modern Family," doesn't have the best track record when it comes to keeping her curve-hugging gowns intact.

Two days before the 2013 Golden Globes, Vergara spoke with HuffPost TV via phone to discuss what she would do to prevent another slip.

"I always try, but some things happen that you cannot control," she said. "You know, it's a lot of a drama. You get in and out of cars and run because you're late backstage, and you have to try to go to the bathroom with those dresses. It's hard! They get a lot of wear and tear. It's a big possibility that things happen."

Just moments before "Modern Family" nabbed the award for Best Comedy at the 2012 Emmys, Vergara's teal Zuhair Murad split down the rear.

The 2013 Golden Globes, hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, air on Sun., Jan. 13 at 8 p.m. EST on NBC.

Check back for more with Vergara later this week.

Pregnant Kristen Bell Gives Ben Affleck An Earful

If there's one person first-time mom-to-be Kristen Bell would enjoy talking to, it's father-of-three Ben Affleck.

The doting dad, 40, appeared on "The Tonight Show" with the pregnant "House of Lies" star, 32, last night and got an earful when she went on and on about her "glow."

"Let's hear it for the glow!" Bell cheered as Jay Leno complimented her on her pregnancy. "I'm about 400 pounds-months pregnant," she joked.

Bell added that she and her fiance Dax Shepard know the sex of the baby, but they're not telling anyone (even Ben). She also explained that babies are allegedly covered in fur in the early stages of pregnancy, saying her child "could be any number of animals, if I'm being honest."

"That's the kind of thing they don't tell you before you get pregnant, otherwise you never would," Affleck chimed in, laughing.

As for how she's feeling, Bell said this "furry" baby inside of her is making her "dumb."

"The funny thing is, [pregnancy brain] is genetically in your body so you don't have like a killer wit and abuse the kid," she said. "You kind of soak up all these wonderful hormones and you're just really nice and dumb the whole time."

Michael Strahan: A Giant Recognizes Others Who Make a Difference

0
0

Many of you know me as Michael Strahan the NFL football player and most recently as Kelly's sidekick on LIVE! with Kelly and Michael. What you don't know about me is that I have a side to me that likes to give back, especially for children who are underprivileged and battling causes in order to save their lives. I recently launched a line of sportswear called GMEN and I'm donating a percentage of my sales to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Their mission is to advance cures and means of prevention for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Consistent with the vision of the founder, Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family's ability to pay. I have been active with this organization for quite some time and plan to support their mission along with the many other celebrities who are behind their diligent efforts. I am also actively involved with the American Cancer Society, The Children's Miracle Network, Housing Enterprises for the Less Privileged (H.E.L.P.), People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), Post-9/11 New York Rebuilding Efforts and the Starlight Children's Foundation to name a few. All in which I lend my time and support happily.

In doing my charitable work, I also like to shed light on others who are making a difference as well. My good friend and insurance consultant, Rich Salgado or better known as "Big Daddy" to most, suffered a brain aneurism in 2008 and lives with a 19-inch scar that reminds him every day that anything can happen to anyone. He attributes his being alive today to North Shore-LIJ's Brain Aneurysm Center at Cushing Neuroscience Institute and to operation co-directors Dr. David Chalif and Dr. Avi Setton. Rich always knew he wanted to do something to give back both to those who saved his life and those who would be forced to live through similar experiences. When revisiting the Brain Aneurysm Center, seeing children in recovery particularly and personally touched Rich's heart and he immediately knew he wanted to fund the creation of a children's aneurysm center at North Shore-LIJ's Cushing Neuroscience Institute.

This past June 2012, Rich hosted his first Big Daddy Golf Classic benefitting the funding of the new children's Brain Aneurysm Center and raised over $100,000. Over the years, Rich has always been an active part of his clients' charity projects, so when it came time for him to do the asking, the response was outstanding. Over two-dozen professional athletes and celebrities including Mike Tyson, Jason Kidd, Jay Glazer, Adam Schefter and myself came out to support Rich and his event. This will be the first of many annual events where all proceeds will go toward the creation of a state-of-the-art children's aneurysm center and next year's event promises to be bigger and better. In September, Rich along with his partners, former NFL Hockey stars Peter and Chris Ferraro, will be opening the Ferraro Brothers Ice Center in Eisenhower Park which will be a multifaceted facility that will cater to cultivating professional athletes and introducing sports to underprivileged youth.

I enjoy helping children whether it is visiting them in the hospital, reading a book to children who are illiterate, feeding the hungry, and so on, and surrounding myself with others of the same mindset. I realize that whatever it is that we can all do makes a difference. To make an impact in the world is easy. You can start by donating funds to your favorite charity and/or volunteer your time to an organization. Any day is a good day to start so go ahead and make a difference in the world one day at a time and you too can be a GIANT.

If you need any assistance in selecting a great organization to donate to, contact MJ Pedonehere.

It's official!

Weeks after Olivia Wilde denied she and "Saturday Night Live" star Jason Sudeikis were engaged, her rep has confirmed to JustJared.com that the couple are set to tie the knot. The actor proposed to Wilde shortly after the holidays, a source tells People.

"They are so excited," says an insider close to both stars. "And very, very happy."

Sudeikis, 37, and Wilde, 28, began dating in November 2011 and moved in together last year. Wilde, who was previously married to Italian Prince Tao Ruspoli for almost eight years, has confessed that she fell "blissfully, hopelessly, wildly in love" with Sudeikis.

The "We're the Millers" star divorced his wife of four years, "30 Rock" writer and producer Kay Cannon, in 2010.

No word yet on a wedding date.

Congrats to the happy couple!

Hagan defeated Miss South Carolina Ali Rogers, who took second, and Miss Oklahoma Alicia Clifton, who finished third.

Hagan wins a $50,000 college scholarship and gets the crown for one year. Her platform was stopping child sexual abuse.

She is expected to spend her title reign on a nationwide speaking tour and raising money for the Children's Miracle Network, the organization's official charity.

When we think of Elaine Benes from "Seinfeld," our fashion nostalgia siren levels are off the charts. Those floral dresses, the '90s power suits, that pomp...

Julia Louis-Dreyfus didn't just hold her own in the male-dominated world of that iconic television series, but she also held down the style fort throughout the rest of her career. After landing a coveted spot in the "Saturday Night Live" cast in 1982, 21-year-old Julia was thrust into the spotlight and began paving the way for future funny (and stylish!) ladies like Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

Of course, her most defining moments came during her nine-season stint on "Seinfeld" -- like we said, those curls are practically iconic. But Julia managed to dodge that pesky "Seinfeld" curse and go on to find more television success on "The New Adventures of Old Christine" and 2012's "Veep" (for which she won an Emmy). Along the way, the mother of two also found a sleek, fashion-forward sense of style. Who knew Elaine had such fantastic curves?

In honor of Ms. Louis-Dreyfus' 52nd birthday on Jan. 13, we're taking a look back at some of her best sartorial moments on and off the red carpet.

We <3 Lena Dunham

0
0

Lena Dunham is everywhere.

If you turn on your TV tonight to watch the Golden Globes (NBC, 8 p.m. ET), you'll likely catch her in the audience. That's because the wunderkind is nominated for Best Actress in a Musical/Comedy TV series, facing heavyweights such as Julia Louis-Dreyfus and hosts Tiny Fey and Amy Poehler. If you turn on HBO an hour later, you'll catch her on the show that made her famous, "Girls." Tonight is the second season premiere.

If you think hard, one year ago today you probably didn't know who Lena Dunham was. Aside from her (not bad at all) debut indie film "Tiny Furniture," Dunham didn't do much at the time to justify public interest. By March, all that had changed.

It started with the "New York Magazine" cover story everyone buzzed about. Two weeks later, Season 1 of "Girls" premiered. The lives of 20-somethings and people who miss their 20s everywhere were changed. The way people talked about their 20s had changed. The discourse, the very conversation people carried, all that had changed: It became raw, uncomfortable, uncensored, real. The person responsible? Dunham.

The show was a hit, numbers and otherwise. Even the people who hated it, who accused Dunham of racism and saw it as a portrayal of whiny overprivileged girls, watched it. They wouldn't know what to complain about otherwise.

Between April and June, you could catch her every Sunday night feeling feelings and talking about feeling feelings. It felt refreshing, since it's been a while (if ever) that someone iterated so eloquently the very same feelings we usually bottle up. Dunham, not only the main character, but the writer and director on the show as well, also became producer Judd Apatow's protege.

Reaffirming her ubiquity, if you head over to the theater you'll catch her cameo in Apatow's funny-sad flick "This is 40." Dunham also collaborated with Apatow on the Vanity Fair Comedy Issue he edited last month and may have been the strongest voice there, summing up the 12 things she's learned in 2012 ("Drake is not interested in you romantically or even sexually," being one example, "It's possible to feel like a creepy, pervy producer even if you are a 26-year-old girl," being another.)

If "Tiny Furniture" was all about chubby, pasty, stringy haired Dunham, this past year was a testament to the transformative power of Tinseltown. Dunham, adamant about remaining her real, round self -- flashback: She's sitting naked on a toilet seat eating cake at the Emmys -- went from the girl whose boobs you don't want to see to rocker girlfriend (she's currently dating Jack Antonoff of the band Fun.) She got a pixie cut. Longtime friend Zac Posen lent her clothes. Annie Liebovitz shot her on the Brooklyn Bridge. Terry Richardson shot her for "V" magazine. Grant Delin shot her for "Interview." EW made her into Twiggy. She graced the magazine cover of British clothing e-retailer "Asos."

In between, you can catch her on Instagram.

With 170,000 followers and counting (and another half a million followers on Twitter,) Dunham keeps her fans satisfied with daily doses of quips and filtered photos of herself, her famous friends, her less famous friends, and most recently her new dog, Lamby.

Soon, a book will come out. This past year Dunham wrote for teen mag "Rookie" about her first time and for the prestigious New Yorker about her first love and Nora Ephron, though the two may be interchangeable. Her book pitch earned her a controversial $3.6 million, pinned as a self-help advice book of personal essays. According to leaked excerpts, Dunham will try to communicate her self-deprecating wit in writing, just like she does on "Girls." Success is a near guarantee.

That said, it is hard to ignore the intense backlash the 26-year-old received since bursting onto the scene -- over the race issue, the repeated nudity, the vanity -- almost as much as it is hard to ignore her talent. With all our adoration, there are those out there who slam her every move. Just last Thursday night a dainty, radiant looking Dunham told David Letterman about the one insult she loved most.

"[Howard Stern] said, 'Congrats to her. It’s so hard for little fat chicks to get anything going these days,'" Dunham said with a laugh, referring to herself. "It put me in the best mood! I just want to be like, my gravestone says, ‘She was a little fat chick and she got it going."

Man, we even admire her sense of self.

So what's next? In September, Dunham was nominated for four Emmys but won none. If she wins her first Golden Globe tonight, the sky is truly the limit. We're not sure what she can do that she hasn't yet done but we can hardly wait to find out.

WATCH: Andy Milonakis Makes World's Priciest Hamburger Helper

Comedian Andy Milonakis, most recognizable from his MTV sketch show "The Andy Milonakis Show," has a new project that just might be the weirdest cooking show we've ever seen.

"The Makeshift Gourmet" is a web series in which Milonakis, whose other YouTube work suggests his predilection for good food, wastes uses elevated ingredients in everyday grocery items.

In the first episode, Milonakis cooks up what could be the classiest dish of Hamburger Helper ever, subbing in hand-ground Wagyu for the customary cheap ground beef. He also stops by a specialty store for $562.50-worth of black truffles. In the end, though, he winds up using the dried cheese product that comes in the Hamburger Helper box.

If that's not odd enough, actor David Arquette appears as his helper and inexplicably wears sunglasses the entire time.
