Chloe Sevigny On 'AHS,' Shelley's Dark Future & More

0
0

Whether it's playing a sister wife on "Big Love" or taking on the comedy world in "Louie," Chloe Sevigny takes on controversial roles both in film and on TV.

In what's possibly her most disturbing role yet, Sevigny currently appears on Ryan Murphy's "American Horror Story: Asylum" as a nymphomaniac named Shelley. After a scene that involved a potential rape and an intense fight with the psychotic Dr. Arden (James Cromwell) on this week's episode, Sevigny took the time to talk to HuffPost via phone to discuss "Asylum," her character's future and more.

So let's talk about last night's episode of "American Horror Story." Dr. Arden cut off your character Shelley's legs, and it looks like she turned into some kind of mutant. Will she be roaming around outside Briarcliff now?
Not so much roaming, especially in her condition. But she definitely becomes something else. Something not herself.

Will she continue to interact with the people in the asylum?
Not so much. I think she might ask for a little help ... but she's more isolated from here on out.

How long does it take to film something like that fight scene between you and Dr. Arden?
Rehearsing that may have taken longer than actually shooting it. Blocking it all was a lot of work. I think it took about five hours to shoot. We rehearsed for a while, and there was a lot of conversation -- a lot of back and forth. We talked a lot with the stunt coordinator while James was swinging that huge thing at me. There was a lot of jumping back, because it seemed like he was coming far too close. There was a lot of getting it right with the camera angles and all that too.

You know, James Cromwell was pretty big back in the day when he was that nice farmer in "Babe." Did you watch that movie?
No, I've never seen it.

I was going to ask you if you have a hard time taking him seriously because of that.
No, but I kept thinking about "Six Feet Under" and his character [George] on that show. He's so different from that character! He was so soft, and his character on "American Horror Story" is the opposite of that.

Shelley is a very complicated character. How are you able to get to the level that you do?
Well, for last night's scene, I was inspired by James. I had to match his intensity. I would just kind of blend into the background if I didn't go head to head with him, so I had to ramp it up for that. But I watched "The Corridor." There's a maniac that inspired the Shelley character, and one of my lines in the first episode is pulled from that movie. So I watched that scene a few times.

Have you been keeping up with "American Horror Story"?
I haven't, no. I'll probably watch it all in one fell swoop. I want to find out what happens. I haven't seen the script after Episode 6, so I'll be curious to find out how all of these characters end up.

Which aspect of the show has been scariest to you? There are so many different storylines going on.
What happens to Sarah Paulson's character [later on] is what's scariest to me. Just being in a situation you can't get out of. Not only in the asylum, but she ends up somewhere else. But I guess what happens to my character is far worse. God, I don't know if I should have said that. I'm gonna get in trouble!

What about the religious aspect of it? Do you feel like any religious group will push back on this?
I think we're going to offend every religious sect.

I'm surprised there hasn't been an outcry yet. The exorcisms, the nuns, the prostitution ...
Maybe it's just outrageous enough that they can't say anything. Maybe they think not saying anything is more powerful. But I'm surprised too, I thought there would be more outrage.

How about "Those Who Kill," your upcoming A&E series? You're playing detective.
Yeah. I'm going to investigate serial killers.

Are you watching any shows to get inspiration for that?
Not yet. I'm actually going in for a meeting in like half an hour. They'll probably give me a list of things I should watch, or maybe read.

"American Horror Story" airs on Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET on FX.

WATCH: MC Hammer's Guide To Oakland

No one knows a city like a lifelong local. Especially when that local is MC Hammer.

Visit Oakland, the official destination marketing organization for the city, announced its newest spokesperson on Thursday: rapper-turned-entrepreneur MC Hammer.

"My admiration, love and understanding of the culture of Oakland is from experience," said Hammer, who was born in Oakland, in a video interview. "The thing that inspires me about Oakland is its ability to change. We are our own city."

Born Stanley Burrell, Hammer grew up in an East Oakland and earned his nickname from baseball player Reggie Jackson when he was a bat boy for the Oakland Athletics. ("I nicknamed him 'Hammer,' because he looked like Hank Aaron," Jackson said in an interview.) The A's CEO reportedly hired Hammer after seeing him dancing with a beatbox in the Oakland Coliseum parking lot.

"I've been here for 50 years," said Hammer. "I relax by driving through and reliving great memories of being a kid in Oakland."

"Oakland is a hub of creativity," he continued. "We are who we are: we're political, we're artsy, we're musicians. As an entrepreneur, Oakland is a fantastic place to be your base. After traveling the world, Oakland is still the place to be."

As part of the campaign, Hammer also released his recommendations for an ultimate day in the city. Dear readers, behold MC Hammer's guide to Oakland:

Amanda Bynes Says She'll Sue In Touch Over Naked Tanning Salon Story

Amanda Bynes is threatening to sue the tabloid which published a disturbing report about the former child star's mental health. In Touch magazine came out with a story Thursday that claimed the 26-year-old "Easy A" actress had been walking around at Beach Bump tanning salon in New York completely naked. "She walked out of the room completely naked," the publication quotes a source as saying. "She didn't seem to care that everyone saw her naked. She seemed totally out of it... There was definitely something wrong with her."

Now Bynes is threatening legal action against the magazine, according to gossip website Celebuzz. It reports that Bynes denied In Touch's bizarre story (via text mesage) and also said that "she'd sue."

Alarm over Bynes' health has been increasing over the past year after she has been involved in a string of hit-and-runs and DUIs and was photographed smoking from a pipe out of her car. In September, after her car was impounded, Bynes announced that she was retired as an actor and moved to New York to start a clothing line.

In Touch magazine is owned by Bauer Publishing. On Oct. 24, actor Tom Cruise's lawyer Bert Fields announced that the movie star had filed a $50 million lawsuit against the publishing company for two stories that falsely claimed Cruise had abandoned his daughter, 6-year-old Suri.

Bong Bong? What's The Word On 'Iron Fists'

0
0

LOS ANGELES — A boiling pot of wild martial arts moves culled from dozens (maybe hundreds) of violent Asian action extravaganzas as sifted through a Tarantino-esque fanboy prism, "The Man With the Iron Fists" feels like both a lavish vanity project and an earnest attempt to deliver a compendium of cool hand-to-hand combat set pieces. The vogue for kung fu, elaborate wire work and fancy blade flashing seems rather past its due-date at this point, making director RZA's realization of his childhood enthusiasms feel a bit quaint, but you certainly can't say it's dull or uneventful. Still, in the U.S., at least, it's hard to see this Universal release breaking out beyond hardcore action fans.

Hip-hop megastar RZA of Wu-Tang Clan grew up as Robert Fitzgerald Diggs watching Asian martial arts films at New York neighborhood theaters in the late `70s and `80s, and his first big-time outing as a director-writer-star feels like the result of notes he might have scribbled about the wildest, most outrageous action scenes he saw in movies like "Fists of Double K," "The 36th Chamber of Shaolin," "Godfathers of Hong Kong" and anything else he could track down from the Shaw Brothers. Tarantino, on board as presenter, entered the mix when RZA handled the score for "Kill Bill: Vol. 1" and spent a month in China watching him shoot, which led to the connection with Eli Roth, a co-writer and co-producer here.

A cocktail blending aspects of the Chinese wuxia martial arts genre and the Japanese jidaigeki itinerant samurai/craftsman/peasant format, the Shanghai-shot Iron Fists features more lavish production values than most of its precursors as well as an odd but appealing stew of international actors including Russell Crowe as a British mercenary, Lucy Liu as an all-knowing brothel madame, World Wrestling Entertainment star David Bautista as an invincible warrior and RZA as Blacksmith, a former slave who crafts exotic weapons for one and all.

The aptly named Jungle Village is like a Chinese "Deadwood," the baddest town on the frontier where anything goes and outlaws roam free. The simple setup has a clan chief betrayed and killed for his horde of gold by his sadistic militia leader Silver Lion (streaked-hair rock star-type Byron Mann). Rampaging and killing as they please, Silver Lion and his animalistic top fighter Bronze Lion (Cung Le) threaten to bring Jungle Village to its knees, but handsome rightful heir Zen Yi, The X-Blade (Rick Yune), Crowe's hedonistic Jack Knife and Blacksmith form a Leone-esque ad hoc band of loners each whom has his own reasons for getting back at Silver Lion.

Zap! Pow! Wham! opening credits set the tone for the wild and sometimes splattery proceedings. This is the sort of film where the main characters are defined first and foremost by what type of weaponry they favor: for Jack Knife, it's a fancy combo of gutting knife and pistol; The X-Blade sports a sleek outfit concealing an endless array of sharp objects and projectiles beneath black leather; and Blacksmith fashions for himself forearms and hands of spiked metal, which would qualify him as a uniquely qualified opponent for the mega-fisted title character in the simultaneous release "Wreck-It-Ralph."

Within this format, RZA and Roth are free to concoct any sort of mayhem they can invent or lift from their extensive memory banks. Very few minutes go by without some sort of combat; there's plenty of spinning, running/jumping up walls and through the air, skull bashing, eyes and guts popping, prostitutes catching fighters in a black widow-like web, sword clashing, gory puncturing and elaborate demolition of buildings. Most distinctive, perhaps, is the already rock-hard torso of Bautista's aptly named Brass Body automatically turning to metal when struck, rather like an ancient Greek fighter in a vintage Ray Harryhausen effects epic.

It's all sufficiently well done and amusing enough to satisfy the appetites of fans who mainline this sort of thing, but it also sports a concocted, secondhand feel common to this sort of throwback homage when it lacks the stylistic inspiration and imaginative flair for genre reinvention of a Leone or Tarantino. In this sense, RZA seems more the dedicated student than a new heir apparent.

Fun does come from the wildly imaginative weapons designs, Liu's crafty manipulations of everyone who sets foot in her house of pleasure, Crowe's sporting holiday in a role that would have been relished by his late "Gladiator" co-star Oliver Reed, the cramming of so many Asian martial arts hallmarks/cliches into one scenario and the weird conjunction of Chinese setting and mostly hip-hop-style soundtrack. Production values are certainly better than those on most of the films RZA idolized in his youth, while his visual handling is more industrious than stylish.

"The Man With the Iron Fists," a Universal release, is rated R for bloody violence, strong sexuality, language and brief drug use. Running time: 95 minutes.

Motion Picture Association of America rating definition for R: Restricted. Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian.

Sheri Meyers: Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson -- Is There Hope for Healing After Betrayal?

0
0

Photos and rumors have the media buzzing about a potential romantic reunion between Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. Could it be a publicity stunt designed to change attitudes while they're on their worldwide promotional tour for the final Twilight movie? Or could it be, now that the dust has settled, that they both realize that in spite of all the pain, negative attention and uproar that Kristen's betrayal caused, they still really love each other and don't want to chuck their four-year relationship?

Many are wondering why Kristen would ever cheat on a hottie like Robert.

Some say that Kristen is young, naïve, restless and needs to have more life experience. Or, Hollywood experts theorize, filming on location can be a very sexy and intense bonding ground, where intimacy and connection (with your director) grows deep quickly. Perhaps. But usually, most affairs happen when there is vulnerability in the primary relationship, whether it's caused by loneliness, a lack of attention, appreciation or sex, boredom, a breakdown in communication or just too much emotional or physical distance. Any of these factors can weaken or tear a relationship apart. It leaves an emotional hole for others to come and fill.

After an affair, especially one so public, do they have a real chance of making it?

In order to save their relationship, K-Stew and R-Patz will have to hold hands and do the work it takes to make their relationship strong, resilient and trustworthy again.

What does it take?

It takes patience, integrity and perseverance.

Kristen has to earn back his trust by being steadfast and resolute in her love and actions and doing whatever it takes to show Robert that their relationship is her #1 priority. She has to figure out WHY she had the affair in the first place, and then find that place inside herself that is ready to be faithful through thick and thin.

In order for Robert to rebuild his relationship with Kristen, he has to re-channel his energy and focus away from what has happened to him, how embarrassing the public ordeal was and how betrayed he felt and look at what he honestly wants and what he's willing to do to make this relationship work.

Recovering from betrayal takes a willingness to forgive, heal and open up your heart again.

It's easy for Rob (and all of us) to point fingers and blame K-Stew's romp with Rupert as the source of the problem. However, the truth is they each played a part in the affair happening in the first place. This is the time to sit down together and have a heart-to-heart look at what problems, behaviors and attitudes led to the affair happening. Without identifying and openly talking about why the affair happened, there will be an increased risk of a repeat performance in the future.

An affair doesn't have to mean the end. It can be a new beginning.

Kristen's and Rob's apparent reconciliation could very well be a temporary publicity stunt and their affections a show for the audience until the movie tour is over. But if it isn't, and they are really attempting to reconcile, there's some good news. There can actually be deeper, more honest and faithful love on the other end.

As a marriage and family therapist and author of a book called Chatting or Cheating, I've seen thousands of couples heal from an affair and make a relationship better than ever. But both partners must be willing to re-prioritize their relationship to #1 status. Rob and Kristen already have a strong friendship, compatibility, continuity and mutual lifestyle in common. This can be a new beginning for them, as long as they keep sharing their truth and mean it when they tell each other: "I love you and only you, and you're important to me."

Linda Hogan, wrestler Hulk Hogan's ex-wife, was missing one thing when she shopped for a wedding dress with Beverly Hills bridal stylist Renee Strauss earlier this year: a groom.

In the season premiere of TLC's "Brides of Beverly Hills," which airs Nov. 2, Hogan, 52, tries on wedding dresses for her supposed nuptials to 23-year-old Charlie Hill. Midway through the appointment, however, Hogan reveals that she and Hill are no longer together.

The two had broken off their engagement after Hogan agreed to appear on the show, but Hogan didn't tell Strauss until the fitting.

In this clip, Hogan's mother, Gail Claridge, asks, "When's the wedding?"

After an awkward pause, Hogan replies, "We haven't set a date."

Hill was a schoolmate of Hogan's son, Nick, and daughter, Brooke. He and Hogan began dating in 2008, when he was 19 and she was 48. Hogan's divorce from Hulk was finalized in 2009 after 24 years of marriage.

Newly-single Jennie Garth stopped by "The Jeff Probst Show" on Friday to talk about dating after divorce.

"The minute I think I’m ready to start dating I’m like, 'Oh no you’re not,'" she told Probst. "I just don't know how to date," she later continued.

The former "90210" actress also confessed that she only goes for guys who are "not nice."

“What’s wrong with us girls?" she lamented. "It’s not like I want someone to treat me badly. I want somebody who looks like they could treat me badly, but then really treats me good."

"Nurse Jackie" actor Peter Facinelli filed for divorce from Garth in March, after 11 years of marriage. Since the split, Garth has been looking slimmer (see photos here) after losing what she called "30 pounds of dead weight." The estranged couple has three daughters together, Luca, Lola and Fiona.

WATCH: Lady Gaga Urges U.S. Voters To Back Gay Marriage Initiatives In Four States

Lady Gaga has never been shy about expressing her support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights, but now the "Mother Monster" has stepped up her game with a video urging fans to back marriage equality.

The pop diva's video was produced in conjunction with the social media campaign The Four 2012, which is focused on passing same-sex marriage ballot measures in Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and Washington this November.

"No one speaks more to young people than Lady Gaga," Brian Ellner, a co-founder of The Four, said in a statement cited by Buzzfeed. "And they support equality more than any other group. If we are going to win and make marriage equality history on Tuesday in all four states, we need young people to get out and vote in record numbers."

Gaga isn't the only gay icon to speak out in favor of LGBT rights just ahead of the U.S. presidential election. Earlier today, Barbra Streisand released a clip through the National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC) in which she pointed to President Barack Obama's stance on the LGBT community as part of her endorsement.

AfterEllen.com is Logo's site for lesbians and bisexual women in entertainment and media, which means we pride ourselves on knowing all kinds of Sapphic pop-culture facts. Each week we share some of the best tidbits on The Huffington Post in our series "Best Lesbian Week Ever." Here's who and what was on our raging gay radar this week.

Drawn gay: Jane Lynch is animated in Wreck-It Ralph, which opens this week. She even has an action figure, complete with a lesbian haircut.

2012-11-02-wreckitralphinterntionalposterjanelynch.jpeg

Foster child: Jodie Foster will receive the Cecil B. DeMille award at the Golden Globes this year, as she's been working in Hollywood since the 1970s. Can you believe in all that time she's never played a gay role?

Face the facts: While on The Talk this week, The Facts of Life star Lisa Whelchel said Jo was not a lesbian. Sara Gilbert and everyone else in the world begged to differ.

I wanna come over: Melissa Etheridge was in Maryland to hand out treats on Halloween. No word on whether any kids recognized her as anything other than a candy handler.

How to be gay in 24 easy steps: On Vice's Web series Slutever, JD Samson and Lauren Dillard give Karly a lesbian makeover, complete with flannel, ironic hip-hop T-shirts and skateboards.

Breaking our hearts: Out director Jamie Babbit's new trailer for Breaking the Girls has us even more psyched for the lesbian-tinged thriller. With no release date yet, this certainly is a teaser.

Berry interesting: Halle Berry wants to play out activist Angela Davis on the big screen. Besides the fact that that's a biopic we'd love to see, we'd watch Halle in just about anything. We even watched that terrible sex scene in Monster's Ball.

Jurors Speak Out In Britney Spears Trial

0
0

LOS ANGELES — Jurors who heard libel and breach of contract claims by Britney Spears' ex-confidante said they were unimpressed by his case and agreed with a judge's ruling to dismiss his case mid-trial.

Thursday's ruling by Superior Court Judge Suzanne Bruguera was also praised by attorneys for Spears' family and her conservators, who said it was the right result after years of legal fights with Sam Lutfi, who claimed he was the singer's manager and entitled to a share of her fortune.

"It was a very weak case," said Veronica Jones, one of the jurors who spoke to reporters after being released from service Friday morning. "I wasn't convinced that he had a real case, a real strong case. I kept wondering how it got this far."

Jones' comments were echoed by other jurors who sat through more than a week's worth of testimony. Lutfi sued Spears' conservators, claiming he had a valid agreement to serve as her manager. He also sued the singer's mother, Lynne Spears, for libel and her father for hitting him during a confrontation toward the end of her public meltdown in early 2008.

Fellow juror LaJuan Collins said she felt there was a lack of evidence and that the case Lutfi presented seemed "inconsistent each day."

Lynne Spears, who was sued over passages in her book that described Lutfi as a Svengali who used paparazzi as his henchmen, said her daughter was pleased with the outcome. "She's so excited that justice has prevailed," Lynne Spears said.

The singer's father, Jamie Spears, has served as her conservator of her personal affairs since February 2008 and was joined earlier this year by her fiance, Jason Trawick.

"Finally, it's over. The system worked," said Andrew Wallet, an attorney who serves as co-conservator over Britney Spears' estate. "The truth came out," he said, adding that the trial definitively showed that Lutfi never served as Spears' manager.

Jones agreed, saying Lutfi's actions didn't demonstrate work that a manager would have to perform.

She said she sympathized with Spears' mother, who sat through the trial as photos and videos of the singer's erratic behavior were shown and Lutfi's attorney repeatedly described her as a drug addict.

Colins said she also empathized with Britney Spears, who didn't attend the trial, and her parents. "This could be any family," she said. "I feel they did the right thing. They were trying to save their daughter."

Jones, a worker for the city of Pasadena, said the case demonstrated for her the high price of fame and how she wouldn't want her family to go through similar troubles.

"I would rather go to work every day than have my daughter go through all that," Jones said.

Danielle Giaccio: Where Have All the Celebrities Gone?

0

I first want to say that I am eternally grateful to have my family safe and not harmed during hurricane Sandy. The worst we had was half of fence torn off and loss of power. It was nothing compared to what my community lost. I am a Staten Islander. I am proud to be one. And I am brokenhearted over what I have seen happen here since Sandy.

I have seen some wonderful things too that helped restore my faith in humanity. I have seen my community pull together and come out to help those who have lost everything they have ever own. Social media sites like Facebook are constantly showing updates from my fellow Staten Islanders offering suggestions for where people need clothes, food and where people who are still living without power, can find gas. People are truly coming together and giving their time and effort to help Staten Island get through this. I have never been more proud to be from what is often referred to as the "forgotten borough." Well, we haven't felt more forgotten than we do now. The only ones who haven't forgot about us are us. We as Staten Islanders will come together and will persevere.

It amazes me that I haven't seen any outpouring of love or support from the people who have the most to spare, you celebrities. Where are you now, Mr. Clooney? Why is it that when Haiti had an earthquake you rallied your A-list friends to donate money they could certainly spare, yet we have mass devastation in Staten Island and the surrounding areas in New Jersey and New York and we haven't heard a word from any of you.

Or what about you, Mr. Pitt and Ms. Jolie? Two people who flaunt themselves as these wonderful giving people yet we haven't heard a peep out of you guys offering help or money. Or what about you, Mr. Penn? You went down to New Orleans to help but we are drowning here and you haven't been seen on a boat rowing down Hylan Boulevard offering any type of help. What about yo,u Mr. Carter? You are from Brooklyn and your city is suffering. I know you are a good man. But where are you? And Ms. Gaga, if you love this city as much as you claim you do, take a trip to SI and see what your city has become. Then take your millions of dollars and put it to good use.

Where are all of you at this time of need? Why is it that when any other country has a tragic event you all come out throwing money at them but we here in the good old USA in the greatest city in the world are suffering and the silence from you A-listers is deafening.

I want all of you celebrities, who pick and choose when you want to be caught giving only when it serves your public persona, to think about all you own. All your mansions, your yachts, your fancy clothes, everything. Think about all of that for one second. Now close your eyes and imagine every last bit of those things gone. All of your pictures of loved ones here and past. All of your home videos of your kids. All of your sentimental things taken from you. Now open your eyes. You still have all of those precious and tangible items don't you? Well, guess what. We don't. Staten Island doesn't. Long Island doesn't. Breezy Point doesn't. Rockaway doesn't. New Jersey shore doesn't. But you do.

I gave everything I own and then some to people and I am a 26-year-old making way less than you. If I along with the thousands upon thousands of amazing New Yorkers can give all we have left to those who have nothing, then I can't understand why none of you can speak up and give back to your fans who are suffering. You're all so quick to give to other countries when tragedy hits them but nothing for us.

I do want to give a shout out to Bon Jovi and Christina Aguilera for doing the NBC special. It's nice to know at least two celebrities haven't forgotten about us.
