No, 'Younger' And 'Sex And The City' Are Not 'Only For Women'

The feminism of "Younger" is sneaky and sweet. Darren Star managed to cook a women's rights wake-up call into a feel-good rom-com, and then he hid it in TVLand's mid-season line-up.

The show, based on Pamela Redmond Satran's book, Younger, tells the story of Liza Miller -- a 40-year-old mother, hoping to return to the workforce after getting divorced and taking a decade-and-a-half off to raise her daughter. Turned down for several jobs because of the gap on her résumé, Liza disguises herself as a 20-something with ombré highlights and a Millennial sensibility. From the pilot, the show offers up the excitement of reinvention combined with a biting condemnation of the way we force women to choose between their kids and a career.

Now that "Younger" has been renewed for a second season (and is available for streaming in its entirety on TVLand's website), HuffPost Entertainment spoke to creator Darren Star about making the show and how things have changed for women on TV since he created "Sex and the City."

What made you want to adapt Pamela Redmond Satran's "Younger"?
I read the book a number of years ago, but it was being optioned somewhere else. I was always really drawn to the idea of a woman who had to lie about her age to re-enter the work place. I thought it felt like a relateable story. There are a lot of women that I know that left work to have kids and then found it hard, after they had kids, to sort of get back in to the jobs they’d left behind in order to raise children.

What were your initial thoughts on casting for Liza? Did you always intend to cast a woman, like Sutton Foster, who is genuinely a 40-year-old dressed up as a 26-year-old?

I didn’t want to cheat in terms of casting a woman who would have been, like, 32 to play 40 and 26. I also liked the idea of conceding this woman wasn’t magical. This wasn’t a fantasy where she magically turns back the clock and becomes a different age. I didn’t want there to be a fantasy aspect. In order to play fair with the audience, I thought we really had to cast a woman who was close to 40. It’s much more interesting. It’s about how people percieve you based on what you’re telling.

As a writer, how do stay in touch with the younger generation Liza is trying to fit in with?

That’s the fun of it, thinking about those generational differences. What would a woman who’s 40 years old come up against in terms of trying to behave like a younger person right now? Part of what made the show more relevant than it might of been 10 years ago is this whole idea of the Millennial generation that’s sort of come of age recently and defined themselves as a generational force. There is a a generation gap between Millennials and Generation X. So, that’s what the show is. It’s about exploring that. What is the generation gap? Millennials aren’t something we were really talking about even five years ago.

Definitely. How else have you seen things change. Especially for women on TV. How have things shifted as you've moved from creating "Sex and the City" to "Younger"?

I think there have always been fantastic female characters on TV. You can even go back to “I Love Lucy” or "Mary Tyler Moore." Those were always some of the best shows on television that featured women. I think there’s so much good television out there now and the universe of female centric shows has expanded, which is great. I think the women are a powerful audience in television. I think television is serving them in a broader way than it has in the past.

Do you think that female-led content is pigeon-holed? Certainly "Sex and the City" was considered a show "for women." Have you seen that at all with "Younger"?

I kind of feel like just because a show stars a woman doesn’t mean it’s only for women. The same way if a show stars a man, doesn’t mean that only men can watch it. “Younger” certainly has a female protagonist and has a lot of women in it, but that doesn’t mean it’s only geared for women. I don’t think you’d ever counter the reverse, where you’d have a show with a male lead where it’s like, “Only men can watch this show!” So, I kind of think it certainly has a strong female protagonist, but I think it’s a show that men enjoy too. I think that’s what happened at the beginning of “Sex and the City.” So many people were saying, “Oh, it’s only for women.” But no, guys like it too. It’s kind of like, yes, it’s a show that features female characters but it’s for everybody.

How do you think men end up watching either show? They are definitely both deliberately marketed to women.

I think those shows get their first audiences with women and then the women bring in the guys.

Is that the best way in?

I do think it's the most natural way in for sure. I guess the point is that "Younger" is really a romantic comedy, which I think is definitely thought of as female-centric, but is something that guys can enjoy as well.

What is "Younger" about for you, as the creator who also so happens to be a middle-aged man?

To me, the show at it’s heart is really about reinvention. That certainly comes with its own ideas of ageism and the concept that age is a state of mind. But I think the bigger theme that we think about in the show is reinvention.

There's definitely a universality to that theme. Now you have a Season 2. What's in store?

Yes, we’re working on it now. We’re having fun figuring it out. I think we definitely expanded the universe of the show. We’re left with a really wonderful cast that we’d like to give more stories to. So, we’ll certainly get to know some of the supporting characters a little better.

3 Doors Down Frontman Stops Show To Kick Out Man Who Allegedly Hit A Woman

Crowds at shows can get rough, but there's no need for anyone to ever get violent.

Fan video from a 3 Doors Down concert in Broomfield, Colorado, on July 14 shows singer Brad Arnold stopping mid-song to berate a man who allegedly "hit a woman."

"Hang on, hang on, hang on. Hey, hey homie. You don't hit a woman," Arnold yelled at the man in the crowd. "You just pushed a woman out of the way to get in a fight, you dick!"

"Get him the hell out of here … you don't hit a woman dude," he told the venue's security, who took it from there.

The band's lead guitarist, Chris Henderson,  tweeted the video on Thursday and wrote, "Brad telling someone to not hit a woman! Just another reason I'm proud to be in this band!!"

"You see people fight in the crowd all the time," Henderson told E! News on Friday. "In the past Brad has said for people to calm down and love each other but this was ultra aggressive in our eyes. It was so aggressive that he stopped the show for the first time in 15 years to address it head on with the guy."

'OITNB' Star Dascha Polanco On Not Being Size Zero In Hollywood

“Orange Is The New Black” star Dashca Polanco isn't shy about sharing the body-related insecurities she had growing up. Now, the star delves into her personal struggles and how she hopes to inspire others.

This weekend Polanco, 33, will join “The Real” host Adrienne Bailon, plus-sized model Denise Bidot, Roc Nation executive Lenny Santiago and personal trainer Massiel “MankoFit” Arias to discuss beauty and body image within the Latino community. The panel is part of Latina magazine’s first Latina Beauty, Hair & Wellness Expo, which will be held at New Jersey’s Meadowlands Expo Center Saturday and Sunday.

Ahead of the panel, the actress spoke to The Huffington Post about her own experiences with body image in Hollywood, as well as the specific struggles Latinas in the United States often face.

Why did you decide it was important to be a part of this panel addressing body image?

It’s been something that I have struggled with throughout my life and I think that as I’m becoming older and I became a woman and I’ve gone through the phases, I’m learning how to love myself more. I think it’s very important [to talk about it] when you’re in a position of where you are looked upon or onto as a role model or inspiration. Young girls and women, we all need that sense of security and that empowerment, so it’s very important for me to display that.

How were you able to overcome the body image issues you struggled with growing up?

Well, I don’t think I overcame them. I think that I’m learning how to not make the insecurities a reason for me to not achieve my goals or go for my dreams, aspire to bigger things. I think that I still have those qualities but I am embracing them more and I’m learning to make those differences unique qualities as opposed to negative obstacles or thoughts.

Weight has been an issue in my life. My siblings were way thinner and I was always bigger. Growing up the girls around me were thinner and I felt like I always had issues with image and stuff like that.

You’re going to be on a panel with a lot of Latinas talking about body image and trying to inspire women to love themselves. But who were your body image role models when you were younger?

Growing up I looked up to [Puerto Rican artist] Iris Chacón, who was a performer and a singer who had curves and thighs and was curvaceous. My body goals are like when I see Serena Williams, that beauty. It’s different, it’s muscular, it’s not a size zero but she looks amazing. I think I pick and choose from every single person out there.

And how could I forget, it just hit me who I admired: Selena Quintanilla. I think Selena was the only person that I actually was able to connect and relate to growing up.

I think there are many Selena fans out there who could say the same, which begs the question: What kind of body issues specifically affect Latinas in the United States?

I think volume, the curves, definitely. Also culturally we’re looked at as sexual and sensual and our curves can be a little bit exaggerated. I think that growing up in the United States where everybody is the generic size zero, I think that’s something that we all struggle with.

Specifically when you work in entertainment it’s an issue, the moment you’re not a sample size, whatever that means. I keep on telling people that sample size for me is when you give me a sample and you let me try like a piece of cake. You know what I mean? That’s a sample. You can’t say a sample size and not have a sample of each size. I think that when I go into the store and they say ‘Oh I have a sample’ and I go ‘Oh OK so that means you have a sample 10, so I’m going to be able to fit into a sample 10.’ Don’t tell me you have a sample and the sample is a zero because that’s not what the norm for me is.

There was a Vogue article last year that said "We’re officially in the Era of the Big Booty." Regardless of the validity of that article, it does further the notion that curvy women are more accepted in the United States now. What do you think about that?

I think that everything comes in waves. I think there was a wave where everybody was getting silicone breast implants and it was all about the breast. If you were flat-chested it wasn’t cool. Then it came down to like being anorexic, so you had to not wear anything and not have an ass and not have titties and just have to starve yourself because you had to fit into something. And now we have a new wave where everything is you have to get some butt [injection] shots, and whether it kills me I’m going to have a big ass.

For me it was like wow, that whole time when I was hiding my butt and my uniform didn’t fit me right and I was being made fun of because my butt was huge and now people want to have my butt. So I feel like everything comes in waves and at the end of the day what it has taught me is that it really doesn’t matter. The most important thing is how you embrace those differences and how you love yourself to the point where you’re comfortable in your own skin and enhance the qualities that make you. Because there’s so many people that have these beautiful bodies and then you meet them and it’s ugh. You know?

Do you feel like your body-related insecurities growing up ever stopped you from doing anything?

My whole life I’ve tried not stopping myself from pursuing acting because I felt like "I’m too fat, who is going to want me for that?" Or not going for the cute guy in school because I’m not like a cheerleader girl, I’m more like the football girl and eating hamburgers. Then later finding out that I could’ve been with the football player because he had a crush on me and he was too shy and I was so insecure and I’m like dammit! I missed out on so many opportunities.

Now is the time for women to support one another, to show love for one another whether you get stuff done or you don’t, the most important thing is to support one another and first and foremost love yourself.

5 Reasons We Love Kristen Bell

$
0
0

Could Kristen Bell literally be any cooler?

The actor, who rose to fame in the titular role on "Veronica Mars," has since become a Hollywood mainstay, with iconic roles in films including "Frozen" and "Forgetting Sarah Marshall." She also publicly advocates for causes like animal rights and environmentalism, and has a very excellent Twitter.

In honor of Bell's birthday on July 18, The Huffington Post put together some of the things we love most about the star.

1. She sings like an angel.

Bell's skills aren't limited to the straight acting sphere. She also kills it in the singing department, most prominently in her starring role as Anna in Disney's "Frozen." In case you're not familiar with her beautiful voice, here's a little sampling:

Bonus cool points: Bell was partly responsible for making her "Frozen" character so relatable. She opened up to Buzzfeed last year about her role in the development process:

My character initially was written very, what I would call, prissy. She was very girly, [and] I kind of pushed more for something weirder. Something different. Something more unique and unlike anything we’d seen before ... I never saw a Disney Princess that I identified with when I was growing up. They all had good posture, they all woke up batting their eyelashes, no one had bad breath; I couldn’t relate. I wanted to see someone that felt like me.

Bell also brought us a relevant texting-themed Christmas song:

Amazing.

2. She speaks out about her beliefs.

Bell uses her celebrity platform to support causes including animal rights, environmentalism, voter education and social equality. She postponed her marriage to her now-husband Dax Shepard until California legalized same-sex marriage.

“We’ve been very vocal about not wanting to be married in a state that doesn’t allow that right to all of its citizens," Bell told Celebuzz back in 2012. "We’ll wait until California gets on the right side of history.“

Bell also consistently works to protect and empower children. Alongside Shepard, Bell launched a campaign to stop paparrazzi from taking invasive photos of celebrities' kids, and urged major outlets, to large success, to stop running the images.

Not to mention her consistently great insight into the world of parenting, and raising young women in particular:

"I think we slighted a lot of girls [in the past] by trying to give them advice. And I love to give unsolicited advice, so I’m just as guilty,” Bell said to Buzzfeed in 2014. “But something I’ve learned ... is that people are their own best moral compass and introspection is something that is not encouraged enough today.”

 3. To put it simply: Veronica Mars

Bell likely entered your consciousness as bad-ass teen private eye in the much too short-lived series "Veronica Mars," which ran from 2004-2007. Though the show premiered more than 10 years ago, it's fan base (which includes us!) continues to have rabid interest in the series, thanks in no small part to Bell's fantastic work in the titular role. In 2014, Bell reprised the part for a Veronica Mars film, funded entirely by fans on Kickstarter. And as of earlier this month, it seems like the series could have even more life.

Though "nothing [is] in the works," show creator Rob Thomas told TV Line's Michael Ausellio that both he and Bell would be open to doing another "Mars" project -- potentially a "short-run series":

“Kristen [Bell]’s game, I’m certainly game," he said. “Like a Veronica Mars True Detective is really appealing to us, that sort of setup."

In case it's of any bearing: we, too, are game.

4. She is extremely hilarious

Bell is obviously acclaimed for her work in dramas (see reason #3) and musicals (see reason #1), but she truly brings down the house as a comic actress as well.

The actor steals the screen as Sarah Marshall in 2008 comedy "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," and makes us LOL as very intense catering professional Uda Bengt in Starz series "Party Down" (our personal favorite funny work from the actor).

Bell also rocks it in the Ryan Hansen-starring CW Seed meta "Veronica Mars" spin-off "Play It Again, Dick."

5. She REALLY loves sloths.

No explanation necessary.

BONUS: She's the voice of "Gossip Girl." You know we love you.

Happy birthday, Kristen!

Justin Timberlake And Alfonso Ribeiro Bring Sexy Back Doing The Carlton Dance

Now this is a story all about how Alfonso Ribeiro's frown got flipped, turned upside down.

After hitting a disappointing shot at the American Century Celebrity Golf Tournament in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, on Friday, Ribeiro seemed like he needed some encouragement -- so Justin Timberlake and the crowd started cheering him on. Soon after, the actor launched into his famous Carlton dance and Timberlake joined in on the fun.

Ribeiro also broke out the dance to help win "Dancing with the Stars" late last year, but all that was planned. This was totally spontaneous and amazing. Plus, JT was there, too. It's like he's a mirror. His mirror staring back at him.

Anyway, if you like to take a minute, just sit right there, and watch Ribeiro and Timberlake do the dance from "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air."

The Black Eyed Peas' New Video 'Yesterday' Is All Nostalgia And No Fergie

We got a feeling today is gonna be a good day.

The Black Eyed Peas released a new video through Apple Music for their single "Yesterday" on Friday, and it'll definitely take you back. The video consists of will.i.am, apl.de.ap and Taboo looking through old records and paying tribute to some of the greatest artists to ever pick up a mic, including N.W.A., Wu-Tang Clan and the Beastie Boys.

Notably, the video also apparently takes you back to a time when Fergie wasn't in the group. The Peas originally got together in the '90s, but Fergie Ferg didn't join until the 2000s. The singer seems to be missing on the track and in the video, but before you go asking, "Where is the love?" an Instagram Fergie sent out makes it seem like everything is all good:

A photo posted by Fergie (@fergie) on

Earlier this year, Digital Spy asked the singer if she was involved in the 20-year Black Eyed Peas anniversary project that will.i.am had mentioned. At that time she said, "I haven't been in the group for 20 years, so it's more their anniversary of being together for 20 years."

We should've guessed Fergie was cool with it. Big girls don't cry. Da da da da.

Emilia Clarke Reveals 'Game Of Thrones' Season 6 Is Its Most Shocking Yet

Who knows if Daenerys Targaryen will "break the wheel" on "Game of Thrones," but Emilia Clarke has a good shot at breaking the Internet.

tv show gifs

Clarke, who plays Daenerys on the show, is changing from the Mother of Dragons to the Mother of Spoilers lately. The actress has already hinted at her doubts that Jon Snow is truly gone from "Game of Thrones," and now she is giving the inside scoop on Season 6.

It was revealed at Comic-Con that the cast has already received scripts for the upcoming season and in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Clarke couldn't hold back back her excitement. While some seasons have gotten off to slow starts in order to introduce background information, the actress said that's not the case in Season 6:

This season coming up, that we’re about to film, there’s none of that. It’s just go, go, go, go. Shocking moment to shocking moment. Epic moment to epic moment. It’s mental; it’s epic. And definitely Dany’s a part of it.

Clarke was recently nominated for an Emmy along with co-star Lena Headey, who has also teased shocking moments in Season 6. “Every year you go ‘What?! Whaaaat!?’ and having read these, it’s the same feeling again," she told Variety. "There’s a lot to be very excited about."

Season 5 of "Game of Thrones" ended with the show basically caught up to the books, so the future of the characters and the series is largely unknown. There is one thing you can almost count on, though. Filming locations and character casting calls have caused wide speculation that Season 6 might finally reveal who Jon Snow's true parents are.

Could this be one of the shocking moments Clarke is teasing? Or perhaps she already knows about the future of Jon Snow?

The good news is Season 6 is coming. The bad news is it can't get here fast enough.

Why It Would Actually Make Sense For Shailene Woodley To Be In The 'O.C.' Musical

$
0
0

"The O.C." may have ended back in 2007, but its cultural significance will never die!

We found out at the end of last month that a musical version of the show will run for one night in Los Angeles on Aug. 30. This leads us to the little wish we'd now like to voice: that "Divergent" actress and all around mega-star Shailene Woodley make a cameo appearance.

Why and how would this ever possibly come to be?

To start, Shailene Woodley appeared on the show in her youth. Woodley played Kaitlin, the younger sister of Mischa Barton's character Marissa, in the early days of the series. Here's footage of Woodley in the pilot episode:

You may not remember her because when the character was reintroduced in Season 3, Willa Holland took over the role.

"The version of Kaitlin Cooper that we were going to bring back to the show was a little bit older than Shailene would've been able to achieve on her own," show creator Josh Schwartz told The Huffington Post in 2013. "And was kind of a very different character, which Willa was great for. But obviously, Shailene is super talented and it's awesome to see her take off."

However, the upcoming musical is said to be focused mainly on the events of the pilot, an episode which -- are you following us here -- Woodley appeared in. So a cameo would actually, like, fit the timeline!

Obviously this is 99 percent (...100 percent?) a dream. Woodley is a very busy star and also we have no control over the creative direction of the show. (This is our fantasy! Not something the people putting on the musical have expressed any interest in having happen!) All we're saying is, in our opinion, it would really put the celeb dazzle cherry on top of what's already going to be a very fulfilling evening.

Even without Woodley, though, the show boasts star power in its core cast, with "Pretty Little Liars" actor Brendan Robinson playing Seth Cohen and "Awkward" star Greer Grammer playing Summer. Very, very exciting casting.

California, here we (all, metaphorically) come!

Cosby Said In Deposition He Was Good At Reading Women's Emotions

NEW YORK (AP) -- Bill Cosby, in sworn testimony a decade ago, said he had paid women after sex to keep the affairs from his wife, suggested he was skilled at understanding nonverbal cues for sexual consent and called one of his accusers a liar.

The New York Times reported the revelations Saturday after obtaining a copy of a transcript from a deposition Cosby gave in a lawsuit filed by a former Temple University employee who alleges he drugged and molested her.

According to excerpts from the deposition released a month ago, and first obtained by The Associated Press, Cosby admitted he procured quaaludes with the intent of giving them to young women he wanted to have sex with.

The Times, citing the transcript, reports that Cosby told lawyers for Andrea Constand, who worked at Temple in Philadelphia and brought the suit, that he was a "pretty decent reader of people and their emotions in these romantic sexual things."

He said he offered to pay for Constand's education and paid another woman whom he had met in 1976. He said he funneled money to one of the women he had sex with through his agent so his wife wouldn't find out.

Cosby's publicist, David Brokaw, did not immediately return a message seeking comment late Saturday.

Although Constand never sought any money from Cosby, the comedian said he figured his wife would have known he was helping her with furthering her education but said, "My wife would not know it was because Andrea and I had had sex," according to the newspaper.

Constand's case was settled on confidential terms.

Cosby has denied accusations made by dozens of women who claim he sexually assaulted them. He has never been charged with a crime, but the accusations have shattered Cosby's good-guy, fatherly image.

At points during the deposition, Cosby also described his sexual encounters with the women in detail.

The deposition also paints Cosby as emotionally charming, but he also spoke about disregarding relationships to pursue other women.

He suggested he was skilled at understanding women and nonverbal cues signaling sexual consent.

Cosby, who has been married since 1964, said he sparked a relationship with Constand in the early 2000s and invited her to his house and had conversations about her family and plans for future education.

The relationship between the two continued for several years until, Constand says, Cosby drugged and molested her in his Pennsylvania home.

Cosby said during the deposition that Constand was "a liar."

Although Cosby painted himself as sensitive to Constand, he told her attorney, "I think Andrea is a liar and I know she's a liar because I was there," when he was asked how he felt about Constand crying during her deposition in the case.

Bruce Castor, the suburban Pennsylvania prosecutor who declined to bring charges in the Constand case a decade ago, told the AP earlier this month that if he is elected again he would review the unsealed court documents to see if Cosby committed perjury.

The Associated Press generally does not name people who say they have been sexually assaulted unless they agree to have their names published, as Constand has done.

Last month, the reality star warned her 33 million followers not to believe everything they read after slamming false reports that she was having twins or having her babies via a surrogate. Still, Kardashian admitted on Friday that there was one piece of gossip that she didn't mind hearing about:

The 34-year-old was all aglow when she made a quick shopping trip with a friend in West Hollywood on Thursday. Never one to stick to traditional maternity duds, Kardashian stepped out in a clingy grey dress that revealed her growing belly and a pair of strappy high heels:

On Father's Day, Kardashian announced that she and husband Kanye West are expecting a baby boy.

Another day, another teaser for "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2."

In the latest 15-second clip, we get another look at the rebellion led by Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence). Wearing her signature braid, the heroine walks through the center of Panem as thousands of rebels follow behind, stopping to watch as she draws her bow and prepares to fire a deadly arrow. We also see a little glimmer of President Snow via a single white rose -- his signature --  in his garden.

The teaser comes just one week before another (yes, another) full trailer is scheduled to be released worldwide.

It also follows the release of the film's Comic-Con trailer, which shows a stylized version of the rebellion troops practicing with their weapons.

Can the film just come out already? The excessive promo is killing us.

"Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2" comes out Nov. 20.

Kylie Jenner stole the spotlight at a "Paper Towns" screening in West Hollywood on Saturday, where she and sister Kendall turned up to show support for their close friend and the film's star, Cara Delevingne. The 17-year-old, who was rocking blue hair for the occasion, turned heads in a nude bra top and a matching sheer nude skirt. Jenner completed the look with a suede jacket and a pair of heels:

And the party obviously didn't end on the red carpet for the "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" star. Jenner posted a video of the three girls perfecting their silliest dance moves on her Instagram account Saturday:

A man was reportedly found dead in Demi Moore's swimming pool Sunday morning.

According to TMZ, the 21-year-old man was found at the bottom of the actress's pool after apparently drowning.

The website reported a house party took place while Moore was away. Officials said that no one from her family was present, and that the party was not thrown by Moore or her kids.

Police also spoke to Us Weekly, saying that a maid was present in the morning and five people were in the house at the time of the incident, but they didn't suspect a huge party took place.

The man slipped and fell into the pool, and didn't know how to swim, officials said. No foul play was detected and the man was invited to the party by an assistant to Moore or her daughters, TMZ reported.

Police are still investigating the incident.

The Little Boy From 'Love Actually' Has Not Changed At All

Remember the adorable little boy Sam from "Love Actually"? The one with the spiky strawberry-blond hair who pretty much becomes BFFs with Liam Neeson and runs after his crush Joanna at the airport?

Well, he's all grown up.

Thomas Brodie-Sangster, the now-25-year-old actor who played Sam, was spotted at Los Angeles International Airport Thursday, and we have to say he looks exactly the same as he did when he was a kid. (A little taller, sure, but the same nonetheless.) Brodie-Sangster attended San Diego Comic-Con last week to promote his new film "Maze Runner 2."

And here he is in March, looking dapper in a navy blazer:

Brodie-Sangster's recent roles include Jojen Reed on "Game of Thrones" and Newt in "The Maze Runner." The Brit also appeared in the music video for a song called "30 Minute Break" by The Luka State.

Maybe we'll get to see him reprise his role as Sam someday, since we all know how much Hollywood loves a sequel.

CORRECTION: A previous version of this post misidentified the actor who played opposite Thomas Brodie-Sangsteras in "Love Actually" as Colin Firth.
