President Barack Obama ruthlessly joked about CNN during his speech at the 2015 White House Correspondents' dinner on Saturday in Washington, D.C.

Commending WHCD host Cecily Strong, Obama said it was notable that Strong impersonates CNN's Brooke Baldwin on NBC's "Saturday Night Live."

"Usually the only people impersonating journalists on CNN are journalists at CNN," Obama said.

On a more serious note, Obama spoke about Jason Rezaian, The Washington Post Tehran bureau chief who's been imprisoned in Iran since July 2014. Obama said "we will not rest" until Rezaian is released from prison and returned to the U.S.

Obama also mentioned James Foley and Steven Sotloff, two journalists who were executed by the Islamic State this year.

Rezaian's brother Ali attended Saturday's dinner as a guest of The Washington Post.

Sophia Bush Posts Tribute To Ex-Boyfriend Dan Fredinburg, Killed By Everest Avalanche

Sophia Bush took to Instagram on Saturday to share her shock over the death of ex-boyfriend Dan Fredinburg, a Google executive who was killed following the massive earthquake in Nepal this weekend.

Bush, who attended the White House Correspondents' Dinner last night, posted a photo of Fredinburg in what appears to be the Rain Room exhibit in the Museum of Modern Art.

In her caption she wrote that Fredinburg was "one of my favorite human beings on Earth. He was one of the great loves of my life. He was one of my truest friends."

The "Chicago P.D." star went on to encourage her 1.5 million followers to appreciate and hug their friends and family. "Please tell those you love that you do," she wrote. "Right now. This very minute. And please send a kiss to the sky for my friend Dan."

There are no adequate words. Today I find myself attempting to pick up the pieces of my heart that have broken into such tiny shards, I'll likely never find them all. Today I, and so many of my loved ones, lost an incredible friend. Dan Fredinburg was one-of-a-kind. Fearless. Funny. A dancing robot who liked to ride dinosaurs and chase the sun and envision a better future for the world. His brain knew how to build it. His heart was constantly evolving to push himself to make it so. He was one of my favorite human beings on Earth. He was one of the great loves of my life. He was one of my truest friends. He was an incredible brother, a brilliant engineer, and a damn good man. I'm devastated and simultaneously so deeply grateful to have known and loved him, and to have counted him as one of my tribe. I was so looking forward to our planned download of "all the things" when he got home. I am crushed that I will never hear that story. I am crushed knowing that there are over 1,000 people in Nepal suffering this exact feeling, knowing that they too will never hear another tale about an adventure lived from someone that they love. Disasters like this are often unquantifiable, the enormity is too much to understand. Please remember that each person who is now gone was someone's Dan. Please remember that our time on this Earth is not guaranteed. Please tell those you love that you do. Right now. This very minute. And please send a kiss to the sky for my friend Dan. His energy is so big and so bright, and it's all around us, so put some love toward him today. And then hug your loved ones again. #goodbyesweetfriend #savetheice #Nepal

Fredinburg was climbing Mount Everest when the 7.8 magnitude earthquake triggered an avalanche, which killed at least 17 climbers. The Google executive's sister confirmed his death in an Instagram post on Saturday.

Fredinburg and Bush split in February 2014, but their breakup wasn't publicly announced until August.

Amy Winehouse's family has spoken out against "Amy," the upcoming documentary based on the late singer's life.

A spokesperson for the family told People in a statement that they want to "disassociate themselves from the forthcoming film."

"It is both misleading and contains some basic untruths," the statement reads.

Amy Winehouse's father, Mitch Winehouse, also criticized the film while speaking to British newspaper The Sun.

“I felt sick when I watched it for the first time. Amy would be furious. This is not what she would have wanted," he said.

The film, directed by Asif Kapadia, is slated to debut at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival in May. The first trailer for the documentary features the "Back To Black" singer talking about her career. Winehouse died of alcohol poisoning in July 2011.

Jay Z's music- and video-streaming service Tidal has been experiencing a wave of bad press ever since its March launch. Critics have predicted the failure of the subscription-only service, enumerated its problems and declared it already a flop based on its position in Apple's App Store. Mumford & Sons and Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard have been among the musicians to speak out against it. But Jay Z is standing by his service.

On Sunday, the rapper and mogul took to Twitter to offer a multi-part defense of Tidal, using the hashtag #TidalFacts. Jay Z assured his followers that "Tidal is doing just fine" with more than 770,000 subscriptions. "Please give us a chance to grow & get better," he wrote.

Would you accept approximately 20 pizzas in exchange for your hand in marriage? Maybe? Thinking about it?

A fan of Kylie Jenner's clearly thought the whole "diamond ring" thing is overrated, and went straight for what he or she thought would win over the heart of any 17-year-old girl: a stack of pizzas delivered right to her door.

In a preview of Sunday night's episode of "Keeping Up With The Kardashians," the reality TV family is understandably freaked out when they receive the unexpected delivery, which includes a message that says "Kylie, marry me?" Per Kris Jenner:

'Game Of Thrones' Just Confirmed A Major Sansa Fan Theory

We're only three episodes into "Game of Thrones" Season 5 and it's safe to say it's already one of the best seasons yet. Last week's episode was full of character reunions, and this week a major Sansa fan theory was confirmed, there was a seduction attempt and someone very important was kidnapped. Things also got unexpectedly emotional for Brienne.

Spoiler alert for Season 5, Episode 3, "High Sparrow"

Margaery and Tommen got hitched
Award for the most nonviolent wedding ceremony yet. Also, Tommen is officially the sweetest (and most naive) human in all of the Seven Kingdoms.

Sansa plans to marry Ramsay Bolton
Recently there was a crazy fan theory that Sansa might return to the North with Littlefinger to fill the role of fake Arya, aka Jeyne Poole, who marries Ramsay in the books. Now we know that's officially what's happening, as last night's episode confirmed.

Littlefinger wants Sansa to marry the sadistic Snow-turned-Bolton (remember, he was legitimized last season) and "avenge" her family. The only thing we're worried about? Sophie Turner has teased a "super, super traumatic" scene from Season 5, and book readers are well familiar with the violent horror Ramsay put Jeyne through. Also, will Reek finally crack now that Sansa has returned?

Brienne shared her origin story
This was one of Gwendoline Christie's finest moments of the series, with her character finally opening up (and to Pod of all people) about her past and how she met Renly.

Jon turns down Stannis
Jon turned down Stannis' offer, once again. Yes, Jon Snow, you do know nothing. (But he does know how to fearlessly chop off a head.)

Arya won't give up Needle
Arya must relinquish all aspects of her identity to become one of the Faceless Men, but she just can't seem to give up Needle. Arya Stark isn't completely gone, yet.

Meet the High Sparrow
After the High Septon is publicly shamed by the sparrows for his encounter in a brothel, Cersei decides to take a trip to meet the man behind the religious fanatics: the High Sparrow.

Jorah kidnaps Tyrion
Tyrion can't stand being locked up inside the carriage with Varys, so the two venture out to a brothel (of course). But then worlds collide when Jorah Mormont (who was banished from Meereen last season by Danaerys) finds and kidnaps Tyrion. I think we all know where they're headed (hint: the same place Tyrion was heading anyway).

"Game of Thrones" airs on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.

Uniqlo Releases New Line Of Epic 'Star Wars' T-Shirts Just In Time For 'May The Fourth'

"Star Wars" nerds across the country can awaken the force a bit early this year.

Uniqlo on Monday launched a "Star Wars"-inspired T-shirt collection featuring 23 tees designed by various artists who submitted designs for a competition. The launch comes just in time for an unofficial but amazing fan holiday on May 4 known as May the Fourth Be With You. It also preps the faithful for the release of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," which hits theaters this December.

The clothing line is yet another fragment in the wonderful world of "Star Wars" apparel. Vans collaborated with the film franchise in 2014 with a set of high-top and low-top sneakers, and C-3PO had a moment on the runway in Rodarte's Fall 2014 collection.

The men's and kids' Uniqlo T-shirts ($12.90 to $19.90) go on sale April 27, in-store and online. See some of the tees below, and check out the rest at uniqlo.com.

As always, may the force be with you.

Dave Chapelle's Less-Than-Stellar Detroit Performance Upsets Fans

Comedian Dave Chapelle took the stage at Detroit's Fillmore stadium last Thursday for what should have been a cutting and hilarious performance. Instead, attendees at the show said they got little more than a slurring, chain-smoking Chapelle, TMZ reported.

Audience members lambasted the allegedly inebriated comic on social media (comments via the Detroit Fillmore's Facebook page):

A representative for Chapelle admitted to TMZ that Thursday night's show was "definitely not his best set." In video obtained by the outlet, audience members can be heard yelling for Chapelle to do some of his act.

"It's a little late for that," Chapelle says.

Earlier this month, a man was arrested after throwing a banana peel at the comedian. Maybe the comic just got sick of all the heckling.

Either way, we still love you, Dave.

It's Time For Hollywood Ageism To Die, And Change Needs To Come From The Top

$
0
0
ageism

Marta Kauffman was at lunch with the head of Skydance Productions when she found out that Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin were interested in working in television. She thought the two wanted to work together, and her misunderstanding reunited the "9 to 5" actresses by happy accident. "I called my agent and said, 'Is it true Jane and Lily want to work together?'" Kauffman told The Huffington Post. "She calls me back, I guess 20 minutes later, and said, 'They do now.'" And so, "Grace And Frankie" was born.

Ten or 15 years ago, moving to TV would have been seen as a setback, especially for Fonda. But, as headlines would have us believe, we've entered a sort of TV golden age. Beyond that, there's just not a lot of work for women of a certain age anywhere in the industry.

"How many jobs are there -- full-time jobs -- out there for woman of their age?" Kauffman asked. "Especially in our business. There's just not a lot out there for them."

The discussion around ageism in Hollywood rose up again this week around yet another brilliant "Inside Amy Schumer" sketch. Alongside Tina Fey and Patricia Arquette, Schumer celebrates Julia Louis-Dreyfus' "last f--kable day."

"In every actress's life, the media decides when you finally reach the point that you're not believably f--kable anymore," she explains, over a picnic with cake and wine.

The sketch is mocking in its absurdity -- including a viking funeral -- but hits close to the unfunny reality that women are essentially two ages in Hollywood: young and f--kable or old and not f--kable.

More and more, women are speaking out against this form of ageism and sexism. Kerry Washington, Olivia Wilde, Jessica Chastain, Zoe Saldana and Cate Blanchett are just a few of the actors who have refused to let "aging out" of the industry remain the status quo. As Charlize Theron so poetically put it in a recent interview with W magazine: "Women, in our society, are compartmentalized so that we start to feel like we're cut flowers and after a while we will wilt."

jane fonda lily tomlin

At 58, Kauffman is well aware of this reality. "Even when there are female-led shows, I think they don't get quite the same respect as shows with male leads get," she said. "Look, they won't even make a film if it's about a woman unless you guarantee you get Sandra Bullock or Meryl Streep or whoever. You know, they wouldn't even make it!"

Streep is aware of the impact of her name, and she's consistently used her influence to start a dialogue. In a 2011 interview with Vogue, Streep recounted that after she turned 40, she was offered three roles as witches in the same year. "Once women passed childbearing age they could only be seen as grotesque on some level," she said.

Streep is now funding a screenwriting lab for women over 40, to combat the lack of their presence in the industry. The program, supervised by the New York Women In Film and Television (NYWIFT) , includes Gina Prince-Bythewood ("Beyond the Lights"), Caroline Kaplan ("Boyhood"), Kristen Smith ("Legally Blonde") and Jessica Bendinger ("Bring It On") among its mentors for the eight screenwriters accepted into the Writer's Lab.

"After decades of ageism and sexism in our culture and in our films, the complex voices of mature women are in danger of being lost entirely," NYWIFT director Terry Lawler said in a statement. "Women must address this inequality by taking ownership of that narrative."

meryl streep

Sketches like Schumer's and comments like Theron's are powerful. Yet, change really comes from powerful women (like Streep) working to make a difference.

As Viola Davis said in her SAG Awards acceptance speech: "It starts from the top up." She continued to thank Shonda Rhimes and other heads of "How to Get Away with Murder" "for thinking that a sexualized, messy, mysterious woman, could be a 49-year-old, dark-skinned African American woman, who looks like me." The visibility of Davis' leading lady is important, but Annalise Keating wouldn't exist without Rhimes' constant push on the boundaries of network television.

In working on "Grace and Frankie," Kauffman went out of her way to look for female directors and writers. She knows we need to both see more women in lead roles and have more women telling their stories.

"You know, we definitely need more behind the scenes," she said. "When we were looking for lists of directors, there were so few directors that were women, compared to how many men there are. With showrunners too, there are a lot more than there were, but we're still underrepresented."

Kauffman's comments are confirmed by condemning statistics. The New York Film Academy's look at gender inequality found that only 9 percent of directors are women and there is a startling five to one ratio of men to women working behind the scenes overall.

grace

After creating the ubiquitous cult juggernaut that is "Friends," Kauffman felt a lot of pressure and set out to redefine herself with "Grace and Frankie." She wanted something more complex, that had more than 20-minutes to explore character development. "I knew I could never top what I did," she said. "Both in terms of its success and how much fun it was to do, so I decided I wasn't gonna try. In thinking about I wanted to do next, I decided I wanted to go deeper."

Perhaps counter-intuitively, Kauffman said she doesn't think of herself as a "joke person." She can write one if she has to, of course, but what has been most important to her in her writing is crafting relationships. With "Grace and Frankie," she hopes to delve into the sisterhood of these two women, who ultimately refuse to be defined by their age.

The premise, which Kauffman concocted specifically for Fonda and Tomlin, centers around the titular characters developing an unusual bond after they discover their husbands (Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston) leave them for each other. The two women find strength in their differences, with the uptight, martini-swilling Grace (Fonda) learning to open her heart a bit and caftan-wearing pushover Frankie (Tomlin) figuring out how to stand up for herself.

"We wanted to feel that this show could be aspirational for people who may have to start their lives over or for the belief that you can do things at any point in your life, " she said. "You don't have to stop."

To tell the story, Kauffman compiled a diverse room of writers, who could provide all the necessary perspectives for her story. "We have have a lot of amazing women writers on the show," she said. "Our age range in our room is from close to 60 to late 20s. We have straight women, gay women, straight men, gay men. It's a really interesting group of people." Although, those numbers pale in comparison to the ages of her leads: of the four of them, the youngest two are 74.

"I'm a feminist," Kauffman said. "I won't stand for misogyny in my room, on my set, among my actors or writers ... So, I'm trying to make changes in my life and in my work that will have an effect on people. I don't think of it as a burden. As a woman in the industry, this is just what I do. And I wouldn't do it any other way."

Season 1 of "Grace and Frankie" premieres May 8 on Netflix.

Stephen Hawking Has Some Encouraging Words About Zayn Malik Leaving One Direction

Still in need of some comfort after Zayn Malik’s departure from One Direction? Stephen Hawking has you covered.

Hawking made an appearance at the Sydney Opera House Saturday night via hologram, USA Today reports. The esteemed physicist discussed topics like religion, black holes and his battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

During the event, Hawking answered questions from the audience. One audience member asked, “What do you think is the cosmological effect of Zayn leaving One Direction and consequently breaking the hearts of millions of teenage girls across the world?”

Hawking's response was a crowd-pleaser. “Finally, a question about something important,” he said.

He continued with an explanation that is sure to mend many broken hearts.

My advice to any heartbroken young girl is to pay close attention to the study of theoretical physics. Because one day there may well be proof of multiple universes. It would not be beyond the realms of possibility that somewhere outside of our own universe lies another different universe. And in that universe, Zayn is still in One Direction.

Hawking closed with even more good news.

“This girl may like to know that in another possible universe, she and Zayn are happily married,” he added.

On behalf of Directioners everywhere -- Stephen Hawking, we salute you.

Trans Model Geena Rocero: We Need To Stop Looking At Bruce Jenner 'From The Conversation Of This Victim Mentality'

Geena Rocero is eager for the conversation surrounding Bruce Jenner to evolve past a lamentation of the 65 years the former Olympian spent hiding his gender and into a celebration of the promising future he now has as an out and proud transgender woman.

"We have to move on from the conversation of this victim mentality," the trans model and activist told HuffPost Live on Monday. "We need to start from this conversation of healing and thriving."

Rocero, who publicly came out as trans while delivering a TED talk in 2014, affirmed that the process of declaring her true identity was a "healing moment," and she argues the same was likely true for Jenner.

"I freed myself," she said. "The moment you completely show your true authentic self, your world has changed. We all have our own little version of truth, so the more we live in our truth, it's a much healthier world."

It's red carpet official! Téa Leoni and Tim Daly made their first public appearance as a couple Saturday at the 2015 White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington D.C.

The pair, who confirmed their relationship in December 2014, play on-screen spouses on the CBS drama "Madam Secretary." Leoni, 48, plays the United States Secretary of State, while Daly, 59, plays her professor husband.

For Saturday night's festivities, the well-dressed duo were joined on the red carpet and inside for dinner by former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and CBS News TV journalist Bob Schieffer:

Schieffer said he helped bring the foursome together.

"I called Téa and said, 'How would you like to come?'" Schieffer told People. "And I said, you know, we'd love to have you bring Tim along."

Inside at dinner, Daly captured all the excitement on Instagram:

Leoni and Daly's offscreen relationship was confirmed in December, months after the actress finalized her divorce from David Duchovny, her husband of 17 years. Daly divorced his wife of 26 years, Amy Van Nostrand, back in 2010.

Last fall, Daly raved about working with his onscreen wife in an interview with Collider.

"We get along really, really well," he said of Leoni. "We have a really good time. I've gotten along with plenty of people, but the chemistry sucked. And I've hated people where the chemistry is great. It's much better if you get along and the chemistry is good. That's perfect."
