'Guardians' Director James Gunn Defends Superhero Movies After Oscars Diss

"Guardians of the Galaxy," last year's highest-grossing comic book movie, was nominated for two Oscars during Sunday's ceremony. But despite the inclusion, "Guardians" and its brethren were on the receiving end of a diss from Jack Black during the Oscars' opening musical number.

"Opening with lots of zeroes, all we get are superheroes: Superman, Spider-man, Batman, Jediman, Sequelman, Prequelman -- formulaic scripts!" Black sang in "Moving Pictures," a tribute to the power of movies performed by Neil Patrick Harris.

The shot came one day after "Nightcrawler" writer-director Dan Gilroy praised independent film for surviving against an onslaught of superhero movies.

"Independent film, the foundation and everybody here today, I think, are holdouts against a tsunami of superhero movies that have swept over this industry," Gilroy said after winning Best First Feature at Saturday's Independent Spirit Awards. "We have survived, and thrived, and I think that's true spirit."

Not to director James Gunn. On Monday, the "Guardians of the Galaxy" director wrote a response to Gilroy and Black on Facebook:

Whatever the case, the truth is, popular fare in any medium has always been snubbed by the self-appointed elite. I've already won more awards than I ever expected for Guardians. What bothers me slightly is that many people assume because you make big films that you put less love, care, and thought into them then people do who make independent films or who make what are considered more serious Hollywood films.

[...]

If you think people who make superhero movies are dumb, come out and say we're dumb. But if you, as an independent filmmaker or a "serious" filmmaker, think you put more love into your characters than [when] the Russo Brothers do Captain America, or Joss Whedon does the Hulk, or I do a talking raccoon, you are simply mistaken.

Why These Teens Are (Rightfully) Freaking Out About Pentatonix

Pentatonix had the fourth best-selling album last year and went home with a Grammy a few weeks ago. And while the group has racked up more than 7 million subscribers and more than 800 million views on YouTube, it's their a cappella talents that are most impressive.

In the latest video in their “Teens React” series, the Fine Brothers had teens watch two of Pentatonix's videos and share their thoughts. With the singers using only their mouths to create music, the participants thought the group deserved more credit than the typical artist.

“I appreciate how much more time and effort that they put into that versus an artist sitting down behind a computer and just putting some loops together and making a song,” one teen said.

Other descriptions of Pentatonix's complex arrangements included “crazy” and “so sick.” One teen even compared the group to a popular Anna Kendrick film.

“It’s like 'Pitch Perfect,' but better,” she said.

Since the group landed a spot in the sequel, Pentatonix might turn "Pitch Perfect 2" into a cappella heaven.

Clint Eastwood Makes It Oscar Red Carpet Official With Girlfriend Christina Sandera

The bad news for Clint Eastwood is that his film, "American Sniper," was largely snubbed at the Oscars last night. The good news? He looked like a very happy man as he strolled down the Oscar red carpet with his new girlfriend.

Clad in a dapper black tux, the 84-year-old Hollywood legend made his way into the Dolby Theatre arm-and-arm with Christina Sandera, a hostess at his restaurant in Carmel, California who he's reportedly been seeing since June.

The pair's red carpet debut comes just a few months after Eastwood's divorce from Dina Eastwood, his wife of 18 years, was finalized.

Prior to dating Sandera, the "American Sniper" director was linked to photographer Erica Tomlinson-Fisher, the ex-wife of Scott Fisher, a college basketball coach Dina was reportedly dating. (Talk about complicated!)

A source told Us Weekly that things with Tomlinson-Fisher are over. "She hasn't been around in a while," the insider told the magazine in June. "He is with Christina and happy."

Yep, that smile doesn't lie. That is one happy Clint Eastwood.

Grace Helbig is the perfect example of how being "Huge on the Tube" (#HOTT) can make you just plain huge (figuratively). The vlogger turned bestselling author is well known for her video "The Girlfriend Tag," where she put her friendship with fellow YouTube personality Hannah Hart to the test. Grace talks about her viewers' peculiar fanfiction and more on today's "Huge on the Tube," a VH1-What's Trending production.

"It's really fun to see how much we do and do not know about each other," Helbig said about the experience with Hart. "There is all of this mystery, I guess, in the community that follows both Hannah and I as to whether or not we're dating. I've never really understood the idea of 'shipping' people."

"American Horror Story: Freak Show" star Ben Woolf died on Monday at the age of 34, reports TMZ.

A source close to the actor, who played Meep on the F/X series, told the website that Woolf suffered a stroke at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after he was hit in the head by a passing car's mirror while he was crossing a street in Hollywood last week.

A rep for the actor confirmed his death and told E! News in statement, "Ben was one-of-a-kind, and will never be forgotten. The time we all shared together will be remembered forever."

Woolf's family told TMZ, "We have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support from all over the world for our beloved Ben. He touched so many hearts in his 34 years."

Shortly after news of Woolf's death broke, "American Horror Story" showrunner Ryan Murphy tweeted his condolences:

Christina Aguilera's Britney Spears Impression Will Drive You Crazy

Sing it, Christina, one more time.

"The Voice" coach Christina Aguilera stopped by "The Tonight Show" on Monday for some random musical impressions with Jimmy Fallon, and one of them will completely blow your mind. The segment included spot-on imitations of Cher and David Bowie, but the moment of the night came when Xtina broke out her Britney Spears impression. Yes, you read that right. Aguilera pretended to be fellow pop sensation Britney Spears singing "This Little Piggy."

It was so amazing that it even rivals Adam Levine's Michael Jackson impression and caused Fallon to give a standing ovation.

Don't be surprised if you just watch this on repeat. And If your co-workers get annoyed because you're playing it so much, just say what Britney would say ...

The room was dimly lit and packed full of moviegoers. People had lined up for hours to get a good seat for a movie that if not a cinematic genius would at least be entertaining. Seats were chosen wisely as the film was sure to be a bonding experience with whomever you were near. As the final preview came to an end the excited and nervous chatter quieted, the lights fell dark and the movie began.

Below are 50 thoughts I had while watching Fifty Shades of Grey.

'I Am Not My Hair': Zendaya's Response to Ignorant Comment

"My wearing my hair in locks on an Oscar red carpet was to showcase them in a positive light, to remind people of color that our hair is good enough." -- Zendaya

2015-02-24-FullSizeRender12.jpg

I loved the response that Zendaya gave to the ignorant comments offered my Giuliana Rancic in regards to her wearing her hair in locs on the red carpet. For those of you who missed it here are her words...

"smells like patchouli oil ... or maybe weed."

Those who have been following me on the blog, or other natural hair publications know that I am passionate about natural hair, simply put, because I grew up hating the hair I did not understand. I grew up with relaxers in my hair, because it was easier to maintain that way.

After becoming the mother to three extraordinary brown girls, I wanted to do a little more research on natural hair vs relaxed hair. The affects of these products on our health, and the benefits of learning to maintain my natural locs, for my daughters' sakes as well as my own. In trying to maintain a healthier lifestyle, and to teach my girls to love everything about themselves, including their hair, which society has taught us in many ways defines who we are, I have fallen in love with my own hair, and the process of learning how to maintain it.

Natural hair has been a topic for debate not only in the black community but beyond. From a woman of color being discharged from the Navy because she refused to cut her natural locks, to workplace conflict and even the inability to wear certaing hair styles for job interviews.

I was truly disappointed to see that a woman could go out of her way to say something so ignorant about another woman, especially one who has experienced body shaming, like Giuliana Rancic. I would hope that a woman who has been given a platform where she can speak her mind would want to use that platform to empower women not tear them down.

Natural Hair on the Red Carpet

Despite the ignorant view point of few among us, many celebrities rocked their natural do's at the Oscars this year, and they looked amazing. My favorite being the gorgeous Lupita Nyong'o, does she ever fail to impress?

The gorgeous Oscar winner rocked a cropped look, and had by far the best gown, in my opinion. She makes me want to take the plunge and skip and transition all together!

Bringing back the '70s and making us covet a classic look, Solange knew what she was doing when she stole the spotlight on the red carpet with this classic look.

My favorite TV Diva did what only she knows how to, and took control! Viola Davis looked stunning with another fabulous short look.

I am glad to see so many black celebrities representing the natural hair diva's at events like the Oscars. It goes to show, that although there will always be people who don't know better, hopefully it will help to shift the definition of beauty, in order to help young black girls understand that they do not have to accept the media's definition of beauty.

Kim Gordon Says Lana Del Rey Comments Stemmed From Feeling 'Protective' Of Frances Bean

Kim Gordon doesn't actually suggest that Lana Del Rey kill herself.

An early draft of Girl In A Band, the Sonic Youth frontwoman's memoir, included a passage where Gordon chastised Lana Del Rey's relationship with feminism, but in a conversation with HuffPost Live on Tuesday, the singer backtracked and admitted the comments may have been "reactive."

“Today we have someone like Lana Del Rey, who doesn’t even know what feminism is, who believes it means women can do whatever they want, which, in her world, tilts towards self-destruction, whether it’s sleeping with gross older men or being a transient biker queen,” Gordon previously wrote.

The veteran rocker went on to argue that if Del Rey "really, truly believes it’s beautiful when young musicians go out on a hot flame of drugs and depression, why doesn’t she just off herself?”

Gordon explained on HuffPost Live that the admittedly harsh take came on behalf of Frances Bean Cobain, the daughter of the late Kurt Cobain, who had just showed her an interview with Del Rey where she declared, "I wish I was dead already." Offended, Cobain proceeded to tweet back, "The death of young musicians isn't something to romanticize."

"I don't really know," Gordon shrugged, "I just sort of felt, on the one hand, protective of her."

"Poor Frances took her statement in some literal way and didn't realize that [Del Rey] was actually just playing around with her persona," she continued. "She took it to heart."

The whole diatribe "wasn't actually talking about Lana Del Rey's whatever her retro-throwback image is," Gordon explained. "I think that's interesting. So in the book, the context I was saying it in was really addressing issues of persona: How much of it is really you and how much of is something you're really selling, basically."

But now that all's been put out into the open, the legendary singer and guitarist has a new qualm.

"The bigger question is, why are people so excited to see female catfights?" she inquired. "That, to me, is actually the bigger issue, really. There's something that's just kind of dumb about Twitter."

The Empowering Advice Women In Hollywood Would Give To Young Girls

"What advice would you give to the young girls of the world?"

That's the question BuzzFeed posed to 11 famous women on the Oscars' red carpet on Feb. 22. From funny ladies to celebrated dramatic actresses, "Selma" director Ava DuVernay to 18-year-old actress Chloë Grace Moretz, every single woman's answer was a powerful reminder of what young girls need to hear while they're growing up.

One standout piece of advice was "How To Get Away With Murder" star Viola Davis' comment: "To not live someone else's life and someone else's idea of what womanhood is. Womanhood is you. Womanhood is everything that's inside of you," she said.

Other wise words came from 'Jane The Virgin' actress Gina Rodriguez: "Work hard. Be so good they can't ignore you."

Oscar Night Acceptance Speeches

$
0
0
For the last several years, and maybe even my entire adult life, I've been complaining about acceptance speeches at awards ceremonies... particularly the Oscars.

The winners are huge pop culture icons, snagging the award of their lifetime... with a global platform for three minutes to actually say something important.

To be honest, most of the time the winners drone on and on trying to thank everyone on their mental list. The really awful ones actually pull out a folded piece of paper. C'mon, you're are actors... you know what to do when you are in the spotlight.

Sure, there have been some highlights through the years. Like Tom Hanks when he won for Philadelphia, bringing overnight empathy to the AIDS crisis when very few were acknowledging it. Last year, Jared Leto stole the show very early in the night with his moving acceptance speech honoring both his mom and the transgender population. Very few followed suit.

Which is why when Patricia Arquette spoke about wage equality when she won Best Supporting Actress for Boyhood, I wasn't holding my breathe for any more inspiration. She said it well, I will say that, and completely understood the power she possessed for those three minutes. But I thought that might be it.

It turns out that she set a trend.

We finally finally finally had a number of acceptance speeches that tackled cultural issues that we are facing. Finally the acceptance speeches reflected us and what we are all going through, collectively.

Like when John Legend and Common won for their song from Selma. They didn't waste their time thanking all of the musicians... I'm sure that they've already done that. They took the stage and sent us a message about justice and equality. Unbelievably articulate and inspiring.

Then we got a surprise from Graham Moore, when he won for Best Screenplay. He bravely admitted that he had once attempted suicide, and encouraged us all to "stay weird." Look how far he has come... look how far any of us have come. Brave indeed.

I just knew in my heart of hearts that Julianne Moore would win for Best Actress...it was her turn IMHO. While her speech did get admittedly jumbled, she spoke brilliantly about understanding Alzheimer's disease, as portrayed by her role in Still Alice. A very misunderstood disease that needs a little more understanding. Ok, a lot more understanding but it's time like these that propel us forward. Thank you.

So sure, the opening number from NPH was fantastic and the musical numbers were breathtaking (not a dry eye in the house after Legend/Common), but it was the string of acceptance speeches that left me inspired.

Just as they should. What's your experience? JIM.

'Power Rangers' Gets Super Dark In This Short-Film Remake

Go, go Power Rangers?

They're back, like you've never seen them before. Producer Adi Shankar and director Joseph Kahn have brought to the world "Adi Shankar Presents a Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers Bootleg Film By Joseph Kahn." The film, which is unaffiliated with any official Power Rangers franchise, tracks down the Power Ranger teens when they're all grown up, and let's just say, they didn't exactly reach adulthood unscathed. If you've ever wanted to see James Van Der Beek and Katee Sackhoff star in a really dark version of your favorite childhood show, congratulations. This is your special day.

Shankar sat down for a Q&A video explaining the origins of the film. The description of the video sums up his mission statement:

When I was a child, I had two favorite TV shows: the "X-Men" animated series and "Power Rangers." I eventually came to the realization that high school kids weaponized to fight an intergalactic threat would turn those kids into some seriously disturbed adults.

Téa Leoni Talks Ex David Duchovny: 'On Occasion, I Want To Throttle Him'

Téa Leoni has a great co-parenting relationship with ex-husband David Duchovny, but in a new interview with More magazine, the "Madam Secretary" star admits that every once in a while, the guy just gets on her nerves.

“On occasion, I want to throttle him,” Leoni says of her former hubby in the March issue of the magazine. “But in any real relationship with someone you love, that’s true.”

Those inevitable I-want-to-throttle-him moments aside, the two have forged a strong co-parenting relationship with one another since splitting up last June. The 48-year-old actress tells More that she and Duchovny talk almost daily and even shared a rental house with their two kids and extended family during the holidays.

That mature take on divorce matches up with what Leoni has said about her hubby of 17 years in the past.

"David gave me the two greatest gifts on the planet," she said in an interview with Parade in September. "I don't know how I could ever hate him. We've always loved each other, and we adore these kids."

As for her reported relationship with "Madam Secretary" co-star Tim Daly, Leoni is choosing to stay mum, telling More that after her much-publicized divorce, she will "never speak again" about her personal relationships, "especially after what it did to my kids."

One Man Spent Over $175,000 In His Quest To Look Like Madonna

How much do you love your favorite pop star? Enough to spend $175,000 to look like them?

TLC's "My Strange Addiction" series recently profiled Adam Guerra, a Madonna superfan from Hollywood, California, who estimates he's spent over $175,000 to look just like the "Living for Love" singer. That budget includes over 18 cosmetic procedures, from Botox to cheek and jaw surgery, and about $100,000 worth of costumes, jewelry and accessories.

On the show, Guerra elaborated on why he wants to emulate the 56-year-old singer:

"With Madonna, I saw somebody who went from nothing to something, who was herself and didn't care what anybody said about her. She was the one everybody wanted to be," he said.

Of course, he's not the only person who's dropped thousands to resemble his favorite celebrity. A British makeup artist, Jordan James Parke, made headlines in December 2014 for reportedly spending $150,000 on cosmetic procedures to look like Kim Kardashian.

The 'Parks And Rec' Finale Flash Forwards Gave Us 12 Happy Endings

Raise your hand if you sobbed through the "Parks and Recreation" series finale. Great, so we're all in this together.

NBC aired the final installment of "Parks" on Tuesday night, and through a series of flash forwards we found out exactly what happened to the former employees of Pawnee's Parks and Recreation Department. Each story was a sweet, simple send-off and wrapped these characters up in neat bows fitting to their personas: April and Andy grow up a little, Ron finds his professional happy place and Ben and Leslie play charades with the Bidens. Here are the fates of Pawnee's greatest:

Donna Meagle
donna
Flash forward to 2023, and we see Donna as a successful real estate agent in Seattle. She ends up with hilarious stories (She got kicked out of En Vogue! She came in ninth on "Italy's Got Talent!" She served on a NASCAR pit crew!), a fat bank account and her happy teacher husband Joe (Keegan Peele). We also see that Donna's philanthropic side has developed. Instead of taking a lavish trip, she starts a non-profit, Teach Yo'self, to help Joe and other teachers fund education programs. She also calls April "Satan's Niece."

Craig Middlebrooks
craig
In 2019, Craig sings in Tom's Bistro and gets hit on by his future husband, Typhoon. They grow old together.

April and Andy
april
The Dwyers live in Washington, D.C. in 2022 and Andy's desperate to be a dad. Even though April is into stretch marks and puking, she's not sure she wants kids. April goes to Leslie for advice, which is great, obviously. "Nobody's life is perfect," Leslie says. "You have kids because you and Andy are a team and you want to bring in some new team members. I don't know if you should have kids, but I do like your team." On Halloween 2023, Zombie April gives birth to Burt Snakehole Ludgate Karate Dracula Macklin Demon Jack-o-Lantern Dwyer -- Jack for short -- and everyone's thrilled. During Leslie and Ben's sendoff, we find out April's pregnant with another vampire spawn.

In Tom's story, set in 2019, we find out that Ben became a Congressman (and is still obsessed with calzones). Tom expands Tom's Bistro, a decision which leaves him broke and "swagger-less." But as we learn, he becomes the best-selling author of "Failure: An American Success Story."

Garry Gergich

Garry serves as Pawnee's mayor for 10 terms and lives to be 100 years old. Gayle looks the same, natch, and is by his side when he dies at his own birthday party. They also spell his name wrong on his tombstone. Classic Jerry. Also of note: the most questionable moment of the episode happens during Garry's flash forward and features Leslie and Ben. But we'll get to that in a minute.

Ron Swanson

Ron resigns from Very Good Building Company in 2022 and asks Leslie for advice. "I would like to turn my attention to something that would make me feel useful, but for the life of me, I cannot figure out what," he says. Leslie finds him the perfect job as the head of Pawnee's National Park. "Your job would be to walk around the land alone. You'd live in the same town you've always lived in. You'd work outside. You'd talk to bears. Next argument," Leslie said when he protests. It's beautiful.

Chris and Ann

Chris and Ann show up during Leslie and Ben's visit to Pawnee in 2025, and have two kids, Oliver and Leslie. They're getting ready to move back to Pawnee so Chris can run the admissions department at Indiana University. According to his futuristic wrist-scanner-thing, Chris is "extremely healthy."

Leslie and Ben

Back to Garry's story. During his funeral, Ben and Leslie stand in the back, accompanied by what seems to be Secret Service agents. Did Leslie become president?! Did Ben?! It's never explicitly stated, but their flash forward leads us to believe that Leslie holds a higher office. (Retta, who plays Donna, told HuffPost Entertainment that show creator Mike Schur wanted this ending to be ambiguous. "I think Mike wanted the audience to make their own decision as to what happened," she said.)

In 2025, Leslie and Ben are at the Bidens' home for a dinner party -- they play charades; it's super casual -- and a rep from the DNC asks Leslie to consider running for governor of Indiana. That same night, Jen Barkley (Kathryn Hahn) tells Ben that he should run. Leslie and Ben have a mature, loving conversation about which one of them will campaign. They make a pros and cons list and decide to flip a coin. But back in Pawnee, among all their old friends, Ben makes the final decision: Leslie will run. She wins, obviously.

We see Governor Knope honored at Indiana University in 2035. Though what happens between then and Garry's funeral is left up to the viewer, Leslie's final chapter is a perfect, progressive ending for America's greatest fictional former Parks Department employee. She has the final line of the show and stares straight into the camera smiling. "I'm ready."
