Ranking 25 Of The Best 'American Horror Story' Characters Ever

$
0
0
"American Horror Story" gives us the chance to watch a cast of actors reinvent themselves each season with some of the most terrifying, ass-kicking and cunning characters on television. But free of good and evil, or amount of screen time, who were the most well-written characters in the "AHS" universe? The ones who kept us on the edge of our seats, continually surprised us, and brought some of the most unnerving, charismatic and powerful storylines to life onscreen?

HuffPost Entertainment editors Erin Whitney and Ryan Kristobak ranked the top 25 characters, and no, not everyone is included, only the best of the best. (Obviously, spoilers lie ahead for the entire series.)

25. Queenie (Gabourey Sidibe) -- "Coven"

24. Derek (Eric Stonestreet) -- "Murder House"

23. Chester Creb (Neil Patrick Harris) -- "Freak Show"

22. Paul the Illustrated Seal (Mat Fraser) -- "Freak Show"

21. Nan (Jamie Brewer) -- "Coven"

20. Edward Mordrake (Wes Bentley) -- "Freak Show"

19. Marie Laveau (Angela Bassett) -- "Coven"

18. Fiona Goode (Jessica Lange) -- "Coven"

17. Johnny Morgan (Dylan McDermott) -- "Asylum"

15. Stevie Nicks (Stevie Nicks) -- "Coven"

14. Sister Jude (Lange) -- "Asylum"
sister jude

Jessica Lange’s Sister Jude is the merciless foundation of Briarcliff Manor, the intolerable do-gooder who we find out is only torturing others to atone for her own past sins. While Lange’s other “AHS” characters have an unwavering strength and confidence about them, Judy Martin is her most human, a woman who is cracked at her core only to be broken down entirely. While Lange’s fierce, insult spewing is a trademark to her characters, it's the ultimate innocence of Sister Jude that makes her Lange's most lovable by the end of “Asylum.” --Erin Whitney

13. Charlotte Brown/Anne Frank (Franka Potente) -- "Asylum"
charlotte

Charlotte Brown’s time in “Asylum” was brief, but her fleeting presence was one the first jolts that let us know that this season was going to be exceptional. Through both of her episodes, the struggle to determine whether she really “is” Anne Frank is a tough tug-of-war, ending with a clue that propels the ultimate truth behind Dr. Arden. --RK

12. Moira O’Hara (Alexandra Breckenridge/Frances Conroy) -- "Murder House"
moira

Existing in a dual-dual state -- she is young and old, she is with the living and with the deceased -- Moira is like the glue that holds the Murder House together. While she shows compassion to Vivien, she also bites off Joe Escandarian’s penis, and that’s just crazy. --RK

11. Dr. Arden/Hans Gruper (James Cromwell) -- "Asylum"
arden

Dr. Arthur Arden, what a sicko. The former Nazi war criminal, formerly known as Hans Gruper, had a nasty past in Auschwitz (if you believe the Charlotte Brown story), but he became even more horrible when “Freak Show” revealed he was the one responsible for removing Elsa Mars’ legs. --Erin Whitney

10. Delphine LaLaurie (Kathy Bates) -- "Coven"
delphine lalaurie

Delphine LaLaurie is almost inarguably the most sadistic, want-to-watch-you-die-so-bad character in all of “AHS.” Yet, somehow, during her distantly affectionate moments with Queenie, or when her severed head is just sitting on that resting tray, you almost wish she could finally achieve death (albeit a most painful, deserving one). --RK

9. Myrtle Snow (Conroy) -- "Coven"
myrtle snow

Myrtle Effing Snow, ladies and gentleman. “Coven” may have been overflowing with unfinished sub-plots and nonsensical side tours, but there was always the quick-witted, red-headed queen of fashion. Whose last words are a French fashion house and who can scoop out eye balls like it’s their job? Don’t be a hater, dear. --EW

8. Twisty (John Carroll Lynch) -- "Freak Show"
twisty

It takes a lot to go from “most terrifying clown of all time,” to the character that deserves all of the audience’s sympathy. Manic and absolutely unpredictable, Twisty’s mere presence is enough to send shivers down the most rigid of spines; give him a knife, and it’s probably best just to turn the TV off. --RK

7. Dandy Mott (Finn Wittrock) -- "Freak Show"
dandy

Whether you were a fan of “Freak Show” or got bored by the end, Dandy was still one of the most wickedly entertaining characters of the season. He brought a puerile essence to the psychopathic killer trope “AHS” has employed each season, and emanated it completely, from his curled bangs to his pigeon-toed walk. --EW

6. Tate Langdon (Evan Peters) -- "Murder House"
tv show gifs
Image via Tumblr

One of the strongest aspects of “American Horror Story” is its delicate balance of horror and humanity, its ability to showcase the ugliest, most depraved depths of characters whom we learn to love and accept for their flaws. This was Tate Langdon: everyone’s favorite misunderstood rebel with a big heart. Sure, he was essentially a bad guy, but the fantastic writing behind his character was that by the time we discovered the truth, we felt like we could actually understand him. --EW

5. Pepper (Naomi Grossman) -- "Asylum" / "Freak Show"
pepper

Seriously, what isn’t there to love about Pepper? Wrongfully committed for a crime, Pepper is nothing but a silent knight of good intentions, and after she is abducted by aliens (awesome), she proves that she is capable of standing up against even the evil men that surround her. --RK

4. Constance Langdon (Lange) -- "Murder House"
constance

Like most of Jessica Lange’s characters throughout “AHS,” it is difficult to determine the true nature of Constance throughout the season. On one end, she is rude, duplicitous and has no problem killing. On the other, she loves her children very much, has suffered greatly and does help out the Harmon’s here and there. However, what truly elevates Constance is her endless stream of insults that often fly over the heads of those they are directed at. --RK

3. Dr. Oliver Thredson (Zachary Quinto) -- "Asylum"
thredson

There’s a surplus of psychotic murderers in “AHS,” but none as sickeningly disturbed, sociopathic and efficiently pristine as Dr. Oliver Thredson, aka the original Bloody Face. With his mix of charm and good looks, it was impossible for any character or viewer not to fall for Thredson’s facade, but even after his true identity was revealed he remained the most captivating presence on screen. If anything, it’s also a testament to how badly Murphy needs to bring Zachary Quinto back. --EW

2. Sister Mary Eunice (Lily Rabe) -- "Asylum" / "Freak Show"
sister mary

The transformation of Sister Mary Eunice is easily the most exciting of the series so far. From the timid, subservient, but kind-hearted bystander, to the sexual, impenetrable possessed murderer, she became one of the most intriguing characters in a season that seemed like it would be rather static for her. We’ll never forget the moment she calmly let out, “I’m the devil.” --RK

1. Lana Winters (Sarah Paulson) -- "Asylum"
lana

Selecting the number one, very best “American Horror Story” character ever is no easy task, and one we debated for quite some time. But when it really comes down to it, Lana Banana is the best hero, the most admirable survivor, and the most deeply human in Ryan Murphy’s twisted universe. Lana went into Briarcliff with a mission and while every imaginable horror (some we honestly can’t even rewatch) impeded her, she triumphed and lived to tell the tale. She’s tough, but she’s no cookie. --EW

Same-sex couples who are planning to tie the knot with an unorthodox (but nonetheless well-known) officiant need look no further than the Garden State, as Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi is now officially an ordained minister.

The "Jersey Shore" veteran, 27, revealed on Twitter that she'll officiating the forthcoming wedding of her hairstylist pals, Bradley Moreland and Luis Miller.

Meanwhile, Moreland, who works at New York's Vidov Salon, tweeted a snapshot of himself posing with Miller (of the J. Christopher Salon and the Vidov Salon team) and Snooki earlier this month.

Snooki, who tied the knot with Jionni LaValle in November 2014, has long been an outspoken advocate for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

"I'm praying I have a gay little boy one day," she revealed at a Trevor Project event in 2013.

In 2012, she told HuffPost Gay Voices, "I feel like I get along more with gay guys than I do [women]."

Congrats, gentlemen!

Jennifer Lawrence Is A Vision In A Plunging Gown At The 2015 Producers Guild Awards

Jennifer Lawrence turned heads when she hit the red carpet at the 2015 Producers Guild Awards in Los Angeles on Saturday. The 24-year-old actress looked absolutely breathtaking in a nude Prada gown complete with a plunging neckline and silver embellishments:

jennifer lawrence

Lawrence was her typically charming self as she presented an award to Jon Feltheimer, CEO of Lionsgate, during the evening.

"I normally say no to this kind of thing on the account of my crippling anxiety and the unbreakable bond between woman and couch," she told the crowd.

"But I when I heard it was for Feltheimer, I had to say yes because I just assumed that I was contractually obligated. But then when I found out that I wasn't, I had already picked out this dress," Lawrence joked.

'Birdman' Wins PGA Award In Upset Over 'Boyhood'

Maybe this is an Oscar race after all: At Saturday night's Producers Guild of America Awards, "Birdman" producers Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu, John Lesher and James W. Skotchdopole won the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for best movie, topping Best Picture favorite "Boyhood," among other Oscar nominees, for the honor.

Why is this significant? Recent history, for one: Since 2007, when "No Country for Old Men" won at the Producers Guild Awards, the guild's top award winner has matched the Oscars' Best Picture choice every time. (Last year, "12 Years a Slave" and "Gravity" tied at the PGA Awards, giving the group a somewhat unfair statistical advantage.) In its history, the PGA Awards has successfully predicted the eventual Best Picture winner 18 of 25 times.

The PGA Awards is also 2015's first major guild awards, making it the first time people in the industry (many of whom are also Academy members) have voted on this year's awards contenders. (Previous awards shows -- such as the Critics' Choice Awards and Golden Globes, both spots where "Boyhood" triumphed -- were voted on by media members.) That "Birdman" was chosen perhaps shows voters' hand a bit: It's a movie about the industry itself, and recent PGA Award and Best Picture winners "The Artist" and "Argo" were also about the power of Hollywood. As Grantland and Entertainment Weekly writer Mark Harris tweeted:

"Birdman" and "Boyhood" will battle again on Sunday night, when the Screen Actors Guild Awards are handed out. Both films are nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture (the SAG Awards' equivalent of Best Picture). The 87th annual Academy Awards are set for Feb. 22.

Johnny Depp, Gwyneth Paltrow and Paul Bettany, all stars of the new big-screen comedy “Mortdecai,” played a round of the party game “Never Have I Ever” with Ellen DeGeneres -- and we certainly learned a (naughty) thing or two about the four celebrities.

The foursome played the game during an episode of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" this week, gamely answering even the most prying of questions.

So, just who’s frolicked on a nude beach, had sex in an airplane or gotten inked with a tattoo they now regret? Watch the video above to see for yourself.

'Orange Is The New Black' Beats 'Modern Family' At PGA Awards

Orange is most definitely the new black when it comes to awards praise.

The Netflix show may have been shut out by the undefeated "Modern Family" for Best Comedy at the Emmys last year -- which people weren't too pleased about -- but Jenji Kohan's series has finally triumphed.

At the Producers Guild Awards on Saturday night, "Orange Is the New Black" took home the 2015 PGA Award for Outstanding Producer of Episodic Television, Comedy. The women's prison comedy beat out "Modern Family," which has won for the past four years, as well as "The Big Bang Theory," "Louie" and "Veep."

"OITNB" also received acclaim when named one of the American Film Institute's top 10 television programs of the year last December. While "Modern Family" had been included on the AFI list from 2010 to 2013, the ABC comedy was left off last year.

The two series will go head-to-head again on Sunday night when they'll compete for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy, which "Modern Family" has won for the past four years. Will the ladies of Litchfield upset the Dunphys and Pritchetts again?

The 21st annual SAG Awards air on Sunday at 8:00 p.m. ET on TBS and TNT.

Further Proof That Larry David Is George Costanza

"Seinfeld" fans know George Costanza, played by Jason Alexander, is based on creator Larry David. That's what added to the hilarious meta nature of the "Seinfeld" reunion episode of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" when David stepped in to play George. (And then fictionalized Alexander had to teach David how to play George, to make matters even more meta.)

In New York magazine's recent profile of David, timed to his upcoming debut Broadway play "Fish in the Dark," an old anecdote is relayed once again, which should prove that David is indeed George.

Remember "The Revenge" episode, when George quit his job only to sneak back into work the next week and pretend he never quit at all? That happened to David during his gig as a writer on "Saturday Night Live." (He's told the story before.) He apparently quit and yelled at producer Dick Ebersol after his sketches were being cut (only one ever made it to air). But just like George, David returned to work the next Monday like nothing had happened. Things didn't go so well for poor George, though.

Charlie Carver Explains Why The 'I Am Michael' Threesome Scene Was 'Hot As Hell'

What's it like to shoot a threesome with James Franco and Zachary Quinto? According to "I Am Michael" actor Charlie Carver, it was "hot as hell." But that's primarily because of where it was filmed.

"We were in an attic in Long Island in the middle of the summer ... and the air conditioning was broken," Carver told HuffPost Live's Ricky Camilleri at the Sundance Film Festival.

Carver and director Justin Kelly spoke with HuffPost Live on Sunday about their film, which is based on a New York Times Magazine piece titled "My Ex-Gay Friend." The pair discussed shooting the movie's buzzed-about sex scene and why Kelly originally didn't want to include photos from that scene in the package released to press.

Doctor Who is your new Marvel villain.

David Tennant, who played the 10th incarnation of the titular British doctor and starred in the original "Broadchurch," has been cast in Netflix's upcoming "A.K.A. Jessica Jones" series. Tennant will play Zebediah Killgrave, also known as the Purple Man, a supervillain who has the ability to control others verbally by producing pheromones.

The 13-episode series will follow retired superhero Jessica Jones, played by Krysten Ritter, as she attempts to refocus on her personal and professional life as a New York City detective. Killgrave, an enemy from her past, will return and "send shockwaves through the former superhero’s world.” Tennant and Ritter will also be joined by Mike Colter, who will play Luke Cage. "A.K.A. Miss Universe 2014 Paulina Vega Talks Plastic Surgery And Aspirations After Winning

All 88 beauty queens from around the world sashayed across the Miss Universe stage on Sunday night, and in the end the jeweled headpiece stayed in South America with Venezuela’s Gabriela Isler passing off the crown to Colombia’s Paulina Vega.

And though over-the-top traditional costumes, dazzling evening gowns and a bikini segment are always expected in the annual beauty pageant, so are the questions concerning contestants’ plastic surgery.

While there are no set rules against contestants going under the knife, many have argued that women who’ve had surgical enhancements should not be allowed to compete for the coveted title. In an interview with HuffPost Voces just days before becoming Miss Universe, Vega addressed the topic and added she has not undergone any cosmetic procedures.

When asked about whether she agreed with allowing plastic surgery within the Miss Universe competition, the Colombian beauty queen said she didn’t mind as long as contestants didn’t take it to the extreme.

“I agree, but not when they use this new technology, this new tool excessively,” Vega told HuffPost Voces. “I think that you should always retain your original body, because we are all born beautiful.”

Vega also spoke about why she should be crowned Miss Universe and what she hoped to do with the title.

“I’m going to become Miss Universe because this isn’t only a personal dream, it’s the dream of 47 million people,” Vega said, referencing the Colombian population. “[I’ll be crowned] because I have great aspirations with this, because I want to be an excellent leader, an excellent example for girls and teens. I want them to know that physical beauty isn’t all that matters, but also what he have in our minds and in our hearts, the importance of loving ourselves, each other and the planet.”

Vega’s win marks the second for Colombia in the Miss Universe pageant, Luz Marina Zuluaga was the first in 1958. Since then Colombian beauty queens have often found themselves as First-Runner Ups to the title, as was the case in 1992, 1993, 1994 and 2008.

The country’s president Juan Manuel Santos said of the win: ‘It shows that in Colombia we have very intelligent women, very hardworking women, women who persevere when faced with obstacles, and in addition to that they’re very beautiful.”

16 Bedrooms From Classic Movies That Define Teenagehood

"If you were to fold time and space you’d always recognize a teenager’s room," says editor and film writer Luke Goodsell. Since 2011, Goodsell has collected thousands of images for his Tumblr, Teenage Bedrooms on Screen, which he hopes to turn into an exhibition some day.

Goodsell's interest in the portrayal of teen bedrooms sparked when he noticed how much "over" design had gone into the set for the movie "Disturbia," which implied that suburban '00s teens were really into the Clash and the Ramones, he explains.

disturbia

"Disturbia" (2007) — Paramount via timebombtown.tumblr.com

Goodsell started to wonder "where this phenomena began, how it evolved, which things had changed and which things endured over the history of teen movies."

What he has come to realize, is that as pop culture references and taste levels change, the way teens are captured and painted does not. "You can draw a direct line from Shirley Temple’s 'No Parking' sign in 'Miss Annie Rooney' to Lindsay Lohan’s 'Parental Advisory: Keep Out' warning in 'Freaky Friday'... and there’s not much difference between Kirsten Dunst’s privileged sanctuary in 'Marie Antoinette' and Alicia Silverstone’s consumer paradise in 'Clueless,'" Goodsell says.

What's particularly special about teen rooms in real life, is that they're "identity-forming," Goodsell believes. "Sometimes that’s your entire world, so how it’s designed is an extension of your personality. You can see it in the best-designed rooms in films, which capture the tension between coddled childhoods and newfound creative expression," he adds.

Here are some classics from Teenage Bedrooms On Screen:

Tom DeLonge Says He 'Never Quit' Blink-182 [UPDATE]

$

0
UPDATE: On Facebook, Tom DeLonge posted that he "never quit" Blink-182, despite the earlier reports.

To all the fans, I never quit the band. I actually was on a phone call about a blink 182 event for New York City at the time all these weird press releases started coming in... Apparently those releases were 'sanctioned' from the band. Are we dysfunctional- yes. But, Christ..... ‪#‎Awkward‬ ‪#‎BabyBackRibs‬

HuffPost Entertainment contacted the band's representation to clarify the current state of its members; this post will be updated further if and when a response is received.

EARLIER: As first reported by Radio.com, Blink-182's Tom DeLonge has "indefinitely" left the band. DeLonge has apparently made this decision in order to pursue his "other non-musical endeavors," a representative for blink said in a statement. He'll be replaced by Matt Skiba of the Alkaline Trio at the group's upcoming performance at Travis Barker's eighth annual Musink Music and Tattoo Festival. Read the full release below.

Matt Skiba of the Alkaline Trio will join Blink-182 in replacement of Tom DeLonge at the 8th annual Musink Music and Tattoo Festival. “We were all set to play this festival and record a new album and Tom kept putting it off without reason. A week before we were scheduled to go in to the studio we got an email from his manager explaining that he didn’t want to participate in any Blink-182 projects indefinitely, but would rather work on his other non-musical endeavors.” Travis Barker and Mark Hoppus plan to honor all Blink-182 commitments including the Musink Festival and are excited to have singer/guitarist Matt Skiba join them for this project. “No hard feelings, but the show must go on for our fans.” Additionally, Skiba will continue to make new music and tour with the Alkaline Trio.

DeLonge himself has yet to comment on the situation. In August, Mark Hoppus revealed in an interview that band was ready to record to their next album and intended to head into the studio at the end of 2014. “We have the beginning of song ideas at this point, and we are really just excited to get into the studio and have an album out sooner rather than later," Hoppus said. There's no word on how DeLonge's departure will affect the plans for the new album.

Adam Scott And Jason Schwartzman Bring You The 'Avatar' Of Fake Penises

Adam Scott and Jason Schwartzman are at the Sundance Film Festival with their film "The Overnight," in which the actors don prosthetic penises. The sex comedy has already been called "hysterically funny," but it seems those fake members are all anyone can talk about.

HuffPost Live's Ricky Camilleri joined in on Saturday, when he spoke to the actors -- along with director Patrick Brice and actress Judith Godrèche -- about the movie and all the nudity talk surrounding it.

"If you're interested in seeing where state-of-the-art prosthetic penises are at these days, this movie is sort of like the benchmark," Schwartzman said.

Brice went as far as predicting that the faux penises could become the new standard-bearer in prosthetic genital technology, "kind of like what 'Avatar' did for CGI."

"The Overnight" was just acquired at Sundance for a cool $4 million, so your chance to see it all for yourself is just around the corner.

A Live-Action 'X-Men' Series May Come To Fox

The "X-Men" mutants might be headed to your small screen, and not in cartoon form this time.

According to TV Insider, Fox is in negotiations for a live-action TV series based on Marvel's "X-Men" comics. Fox entertainment co-chairman Gary Newman has confirmed that the network is in early talks for the potential series, but things are far from concrete.

While 20th Century Fox owns the film rights to the "X-Men" franchise, Marvel has the last say. (Marvel Entertainment is owned by the Walt Disney Company, which owns and runs ABC, and that ABC currently has Marvel's "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." and "Agent Carter.") Meanwhile, Marvel also has four new series in the works at Netflix, including the upcoming "Daredevil" and "A.K.A. Jessica Jones."

While nothing is confirmed, "Star Trek 3" writers Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne will reportedly adapt the comics for the small screen, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The trade also has word that McKay and Payne will share created by credits with "24" producers Evan Katz and Manny Coto, who will serve as showrunners. But still, Marvel has to give approval, so we likely won't hear more until that does (or doesn't) happen. In the mean time, we'll look forward to Sophie Turner joining the "X-Men" universe.

Angelina Jolie: We're 'Failing' Millions Of Refugees In Iraq, Syria

Angelina Jolie is demanding the world pay closer attention to the dire needs of displaced Iraqi and Syrian families.

The actress visited a refugee camp near Dohuk, Iraq, on Sunday, the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) reported, drawing attention to the humanitarian crisis in the region caused by civil conflict. There are 3.3 million displaced people in Iraq, according to the organization, and 2.1 million of them were uprooted in 2014 alone.

The refugee crisis in Syria is even more critical, as more than 3.8 million people have fled to neighboring countries, such as Lebanon and Turkey, and another 7.6 million are displaced within the country's borders.

"It is shocking to see how the humanitarian situation in Iraq has deteriorated since my last visit," Jolie, who is a UNHCR special envoy, said, according to a statement released by the organization. She last visited the country in September 2012. "Many of these innocent people have been uprooted multiple times as they seek safety amidst shifting frontlines."

During Jolie's visit -- her fifth to the country -- she's aiming to draw in financial support for the organization, which said it only received 53 percent of the $337 million required to fund its response to the refugee crisis last year, the Associated Press reported.

While visiting the refugee camp, Jolie spoke with families, many of which had fled their homes due to growing threats from the Islamic State group.

In a video produced by UNHCR, Jolie visited a mother who'd escaped captivity just days prior. She arrived at the camp without her daughter, who may have been forced into a marriage and taken to Syria, the video pointed out.

Now, the woman is the primary caretaker of her two grandchildren.

"I just want my daughter back," she said in the video.

"We are being tested here as an international community, and so far, for all the immense efforts and good intentions, the international community is failing," Jolie told media outlets at the refugee camp, the AP reported. "The people I met today need to know that we will be with them."
