10 Celebrity 'How We Met' Stories That Will Warm Your Cold, Cynical Heart

There are plenty of celebrity couples who have gotten together after playing romantic leads (Brangelina, anyone?) But it doesn't always take a multi-million dollar picture or a glamorous Hollywood party for celebrities to fall in love. In fact, some stars have "how we met" love stories based on random coincidences that are almost too sweet to believe. Here are some of our favorites:

1. Actress Carey Mulligan and singer Marcus Mumford were childhood pen pals.

carey mulligan mumford

In a story so perfectly mushy, not even Nicholas Sparks could have written it, Mulligan and Mumford were childhood pen pals who lost contact. After they each became famous, they met again as adults. They fell in love, of course, and were married.

2. Matt Damon met his wife, Luciana Barroso, at a bar on Miami Beach. She was the bartender.

matt damon luciana

Damon met his wife, Luciana Barroso, at a bar on Miami Beach in 2003
, where the star was filming "Stuck On You." A few crew members convinced a reluctant Damon to go out for a beer. He almost refused. Once he saw Barossa, who was working as a bartender, he was smitten. They married in 2005. He says, "The moral is that when you're tired, suck it up and go to the bar because you might meet your wife."

3. David Beckham fell in love with wife Victoria when he saw her in a Spice Girls music video.

victoria david beckham

Though the two first met at a Manchester United charity match back in 1997, David has confessed to falling in love with Victoria at an earlier date -- when he saw her in the Spice Girls' music video for "Say You'll Be There." He recalls thinking, "That's the girl for me and I'm going to get her! She's my idea of perfection. I knew that if she wanted me, we would be together forever."

4. Patrick Dempsey met his wife, hairstylist Jillian Fink, when she cut his hair.

patrick dempsey jillian fink

"Grey's Anatomy" star Patrick Dempsey met his wife, Jillian Fink, when he scheduled a haircut at the salon where she worked. Fate met great hair styling: They married, and she still cuts his hair today.

5. Kate Moss met rocker husband Jamie Hince thanks to Google.

kate moss james hince

Moss told Vanity Fair that she met The Kills drummer thanks to a random Google search. She said, "I was at my friend's house in the South of France, and we were Googling men. And I went, "Ooh, I like the look of him." Guess he liked the look of her, too; the pair were hitched in 2011!

6. Michael Caine saw Shakira Baksh in a Maxwell House coffee commercial and fell in love.

michael caine shakira

Michael Caine saw Shakira Baksh in a 1971 television ad for Maxwell House coffee. He was so taken with her that he was prepared to fly to Brazil, where the commercial was shot, to find her. Luckily, she happened to live a mere mile away, and a mutual friend connected the two.

7. Talent agent Jim Toth met wife Reese Witherspoon while apologizing for his drunk friend who had been hitting on her.

jim toth

Toth met Witherspoon at a party while apologizing for his very drunk friend who had been hitting on the actress. Witherspoon apparently forgave the faux pas-- enough to eventually marry the talent agent!

8. "Grey's Anatomy" star Ellen Pompeo and music producer Chris Ivery met at the grocery store.

ellen pompeo

Their story is heart-warming (or terrifying, depending on how many times you have personally gone to the grocery store in pajamas and missed the chance to meet your one true love). Four years after bumping into each other at a Los Angeles grocery store, the pair married.

9. Cynthia Nixon met future wife Christine Marinoni at a political rally.

cynthia nixon christine marinoni

According to the New York Daily News, the "Sex and the City" actress met future wife Christine Marinoni while attending a political rally about education budget cuts. At the time she was with partner Danny Mozes, and had never been with a woman. Of falling in love with Marinoni after previously dating only men, Nixon says "It wasn't something in me that was waiting to come out. It was like, this person is undeniable. How can I let this person walk by?"

10. Scar Jo and Romain Dauriac met through their tattoo artist, Fuzi Uvtpk.

romain dauriac

It was love at first tat! According to Glamour, Scar Jo met Romain Dauriac through tattoo artist Fuzi Uvtpk. Apparently, the tattoo artist gave Johanson a tattoo of a horseshoe and the message "Lucky You," and Dauriac a tat that read "Lost Illusions."

It's hard to imagine Julia Louis-Dreyfus as anything other than her trademark snarky, sarcastic, self-deprecating characters, from the legendary Elaine Benes on "Seinfeld," to her more recent turn as second-in-command on "Veep."

But the 53-year-old actress shared this touching throwback picture of herself as a child in the 70's on her Instagram account this week -- and it's clear she's had a touch of sass all along.

My Mom (photo circa 70's) has just written an excellent book of poetry. Go to Amazon & check out The Gatherer by Judith Bowles

The comedian tweeted the photo to help promote her mother's new poetry book, "The Gatherer."

Standing with her arms crossed in her bell-bottoms, Louis-Dreyfus is just plain adorable -- and yes, she looks a lot like Elaine. Except her hair does appear to be a bit more manageable.

For the record, we are totally supportive and really just in love with the adorable, very cool couple of Robert Pattinson and FKA Twigs. They both seem like really neat, good people, and it's just nice when people like that can find each other. But then, on the other hand, you have to imagine that it would be super hard to date someone like Robert. You know, on account of all the rabid, scary fans who refuse to believe that he's an actual person and not just a sparkly vampire from a movie series. But it looks like FKA Twigs is handling it well, and she proved that even more by discussing it briefly in a new interview:

Sean Hayes Marries Longtime Partner Scott Icenogle

Congratulations are in order for Sean Hayes, who married his longtime partner, Scott Icenogle, last week.

In a Facebook post Thursday, Hayes announced that he and Icenogle had wed and uploaded a photo of himself and Icenogle smiling and wearing matching suits.

Icenogle, who is a Los Angeles-based music producer and composer, shared the same sweet photo on his Twitter.

RumorFix confirmed Hayes was engaged last month, after the 44-year-old actor was spotted on "The Talk" wearing a band on his left ring finger. “Sean Hayes and Scott Icenogle have been together for eight years," a rep for the star told the website. "They are not yet married but they have been engaged for quite some time.”

Hayes publicly came out as gay four years ago, more than a decade after landing the role of gay character Jack McFarland on the hit comedy "Will & Grace" in 1998. Last year, in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, he said he owed the gay community an apology for waiting so long.

"I was so young," he said. "It made me go back in the closet [with the media] because I was so overwhelmed at 26 or 27. I didn't want the responsibility, I didn't know how to handle the responsibility of speaking for the gay community. I always felt like I owed them a huge apology for coming out too late. Some people in the gay community were very upset with me for not coming out on their terms. They don't stop to think about what's going on in somebody's personal life, and the struggles that they're having. It was all very scary. We got death threats. It was a really rough time for me, but I was also having the time of my life."

Hayes' rep was not immediately available for further comment.

Disturbing Footage From Lost Lana Del Rey Project Leaks Online [UPDATE]

Last year, director Eli Roth ("Hostel") told Larry King that he had worked together with Lana Del Rey and Marilyn Manson for a video that was "so sick it has been locked in a vault for over a year." On Thursday, a clip purportedly matching that session briefly surfaced online before being pulled off YouTube.

In one 27-second scene, Del Rey is violently sexually assaulted. Balloons emblazoned with the word "RAPE" decorate a horrific birthday party.

The footage was shot last year, but Manson's reps told Pitchfork that it was not part of a music video or a specific Manson-related project. "Manson did not direct this, shoot it, nor was it for a Marilyn Manson video or outtake footage made by him or to be used by him with his music," Manson's rep said to Pitchfork. Del Rey, Manson and Roth's reps did not respond to immediate request for comment when contacted by HuffPost Entertainment.

Back in 2012, Del Rey and Manson were spotted together at restaurants and awards shows. Manson has also cultivated a friendship with Roth over the years, and even attended Roth's Passover seder. Watch Roth's interview with Larry King below:

Leading the succession of very serious actors coming to the comedy show will be James Franco, hosting for his third time, on Dec. 6. That show will feature Nicki Minaj, who should probably be a host herself, as musical guest. This marks Minaj's second "SNL" appearance.

The following week, on Dec. 13, Martin Freeman will host for his first time to promote the upcoming film "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies." Fellow first timer Charli XCX will act as musical guest. Finally, closing out the month on Dec. 20 will be Amy Adams, hosting for a second time. One Direction will be the musical guest (their third time on the show). Merry Christmas, y'all!

Country Singer Ty Herndon Comes Out As Gay

Country star Ty Herndon has come out as a "proud and happy gay man," People is reporting.

The 51-year-old singer, who is best known for hits like "What Mattered Most" and "It Must Be Love," also told Entertainment Tonight in a new interview that the biggest lie he ever told himself was "that I couldn't be gay and be in country music."

"I've done a lot of work around forgiveness with people that I've hurt and people I've not been honest with because of my sexuality," Herndon told People.

Herndon, who has been married and divorced to women twice, also said that he is currently in "an awesome relationship" with his partner, Matt, and hopes to tie the knot again.

He said the couple, who are devout Christians, weren't concerned about how to reconcile their faith with their sexuality: "We get to choose who we love, and that includes God, and He loves us back."

Rumors about Herndon's sexuality began to surface in 1995 after the singer was arrested for allegedly exposing himself to an undercover police officer. The charges were later dropped in a plea bargain, according to reports.

From the looks of the ET clip, Herndon is mostly tight-lipped about the alleged incident, noting he was on drugs at the time and that the specifics were "really a huge blur."

Herndon now joins singer Chely Wright, who came out in 2012, and Steve Grand ("All-American Boy") on country music's roster of out performers.

Why Harry Styles' 'Not That Important' Is Massively Important

Some people are very confused when I tell them that I love One Direction. It doesn't quite fit my persona: the radical trans-feminist-anarchist-vegan-activist persona. I was completely shocked by it myself in the beginning, and at times it still feels a bit out of character. I resisted for four years, during my screw-pop-culture phase, a time throughout which I was the sort of person who insisted upon critiquing the cis-heteronormativity in One Direction's famous song, "What Makes You Beautiful." But one day you get tired, and hating everything that isn't perfect is a fruitless pursuit.

I'd probably be able to write a full essay on what I love about this group of boys. I'll start by rattling off a few reasons, but keep in mind that that is not the focus of this piece. I love that they are goofy and ridiculous, just a group of dumb kids mucking about and trying to have fun. I love that they are all from humble backgrounds, and have not lost those roots. I've watched plenty of interviews and videos since my induction into the 1D universe, and I can confidently say that they seem to have remained down-to-earth. I love that they are all such great friends and that there's very little inter-band drama. I love that they have the voices of angels and can pull off a five-part harmony like no one else. These are all wonderful things that make me happy, but I think what makes me happiest of all about One Direction is one of the boys in particular: Harry Styles.

A-ha, you saw it coming, did you? But wait! Let me explain. I don't love Harry because he is beautiful (which is, nonetheless, very, very true and does not hurt his cause), nor is it because he has a beautiful singing voice (which is also a valid reason). Harry is the youngest, and easily the most publicized of the five band members. People have sold his vomit on ebay. That is a level of fame that few people will ever achieve at such a tender age (he's only 20 years old). By being the most fetishized of the group, he is under the most scrutiny by the media. Harry is at the same time the most eccentric of the crew, growing his hair ever longer and wearing coats in deserts and being generally very kooky. People that fit Harry's general description (teenage-ish white male) usually fall into one of my least favorite categories of human. But Harry is an anomaly, and the explanation as to why that is can be summed up with one of the most iconic quotes to be uttered in this century: "Not that important."

If decontextualized, that phrase means nothing. What isn't important, Harry? Why are you so nonchalant about it? But I re-read that phrase and my heart is set alight. When asked what four traits they look for in a lady, his bandmate, Liam Payne, said, "Female, that's a good trait," to which Harry laughed and replied, "Not that important." Go to this video, and skip to 2:20. Watch the following 15 seconds. There are a lot of theories floating around the Internet, on Tumblr in particular, about what exactly happens during those 15 seconds.

Many people think it was staged (in addition to the onslaught of unapologetic media "shipping" of Louis Tomlinson and Harry Styles a few days before), because who would really say "female" in response to that question? That's not a very natural response. While Liam is talking, watch Harry's body language. He's tense, he's playing with the rings on his fingers, he's focusing really hard on something off-screen. If you watch the video from the beginning, it also becomes apparent that Harry is visibly uncomfortable (I suppose you might have to know a bit about how he usually acts in order to reach this conclusion, but he is generally a very charismatic and charming person), isn't really reacting to Liam's jokes, and is overall more serious than one would expect him to be.

When the interviewer finishes reading the question, Harry takes a sharp inhale and then clears his throat, presumably steeling himself for the coming moment. It's hard to tell, but when Liam is saying "female," his right hand looks as though he's giving Harry a thumbs-up. After he says those three magical words, Liam emits what can best be described as a loving chuckle. He and Harry both look off camera in the same direction (what are they looking at? The world may never know), then Harry chuckles nervously (yet triumphantly, with relief) and continues on. Notice how the interviewer doesn't say a word, but rather giggles uncomfortably. His comment is never addressed. It is completely glossed over.

I swear my heart almost stopped when he said those three words. I'm sitting here trying to adequately express what it is that is so perfect about that phrase, but my mind keeps tripping over itself. The closest I can get is to say that "not that important" perfectly explains what it is to be queer (I use "queer" as an umbrella term to denote unspecified LGBTQ+ identities). It doesn't mean that queerness as an identity is unimportant. It means that someone can look at a concept like gender -- to which most people kowtow day and night -- and say, "Eh, not that important." Gender and the subsequent sexual orientations created around these genders have caused so many problems (this is the best word I can think of to describe the atrocities such as gender-based violence, the Westboro Baptist Church and the Hobby Lobby debacle) in our society that to say, in essence, "Eh, screw it," is massive. But when you're Harry Styles, it is MASSIVE.

Queerness is nothing new. As a queer person myself, I can tell you, it doesn't set me apart from others by giving me a tingly feeling in my feet at all times or allowing me the ability to hold my breath underwater. I'm not particularly fond of cisgendered males and prefer people that do not fit that description -- whoopdeedoo *twirls index fingers in a half-hearted manner to allude to a lack of excitement*. For some people, though, it's a sinful "problem" that needs to be rectified using violence, imprisonment, torture, bullying... an endless militia of horrible, horrible things. There are many places within this "progressive" country alone in which being openly LGBTQ+ will get you stabbed and thrown in prison.

Having amazing figures like Laverne Cox, Janet Mock, Ellen Page and many others representing the celebrity LGBTQ+ community is huge. No offense intended to Laverne, Janet or Ellen, but Harry Styles' fame surpasses all of theirs. He is an international phenomenon. I lack the words to describe how vastly influential he is upon global society. So, now, I finally reach my point: if Harry Styles can shrug and say that female is not a trait he finds important in a partner, then what else can happen? In other words, if Harry Styles can be queer, anyone can be queer. The floodgates have sprung open. The LGBTQ+ community has taken an enormous step forward with those three little words.

On behalf of myself and at least four other people I've spoken to about this, I want to thank you, Harry, for your bravery. What you have done is so inexplicably amazing, not only as Harry Styles, but as an individual human being. For what it's worth, I am so proud of you.

The One Part Of 'Wild' That Still Makes Cheryl Strayed Wince

“You can really kill a horse in literature,” author Cheryl Strayed said when asked about the differences between her best-selling book, “Wild,” and the highly-anticipated (and Oscar-buzzed-about) film, starring Reese Witherspoon.

At the moment of the interview, Strayed, 46, had just received her copy of Vanity Fair's December issue, where she is featured in a full-page spotlight. As she found the page in the magazine, the grin on her face was practically electric.

But she's not just an author who wrote a best-selling book. It's a memoir, her real life story -- the heroin, the sex, the hiking of the Pacific Crest Trail. What we talk about first, however, is how to kill a horse. Then, having sex with two men in an alley. One of those things happened; one did not.

cheryl strayed
Author Cheryl Strayed

After her mother died suddenly from lung cancer when Strayed was 22, she and her brother were forced to shoot their mother’s horse when the animal became too sick to live. It is one of the most haunting and memorable moments in Strayed's memoir. “In the book, I could give you everything,” Strayed said. “You felt what it felt like inside my body while this was happening -- on that freezing cold day in this pasture in Northern Minnesota, the day after Christmas with my brother, and this horse that we had loved all of our lives.”

The cumbersome killing of that horse represents an unsolved trauma in her life. It is something that haunts her through much of the book “Wild." Yet in the film version, it’s a brief encounter. When asked if this bothers her, Strayed thoughtfully discussed the different capacities and limitations that film and literature present.

“If you were to ask [director] Jean-Marc Vallée, he would tell you that scene was the hardest part of the movie to shoot,” she said. “It’s not a documentary. You have to pretend to kill a horse -- instead of kill a horse -- which is incredibly challenging.”

wild

It’s this exact relationship between the screen and the page that is the most fascinating aspect of “Wild,” a book that millions have read thanks in large part to Oprah crowning it the first selection for her new book club just months after it was published in 2012. Powerful passages, like the killing of the horse, take on a smaller life on screen, while others, like the ending, are adjusted slightly.

When Strayed sat down to write about her life unraveling at age 26 in response to her mother’s early death, her divorce, her fling with heroin and her daring decision to hike the Pacific Crest Trail alone -- the 2,650-mile wilderness path that runs through California, Oregon, and Washington -- she never imagined that her book would become the international sensation that it did. (It has since been translated into 30 languages.) But producers Reese Witherspoon and Bruna Papandrea knew better. They optioned the rights to “Wild” before the book was even released, and Witherspoon signed on to produce and star as Strayed.

wild

And one would think that the natural choice, the smoothest transition from page to screen, would be for Strayed to adapt her book into the screenplay. Instead, writer Nick Hornby (“High Fidelity,” “About A Boy,” “An Education”) was brought on by Papandrea to do the honors. It’s a decision that came up often enough in interviews that Strayed, over drinks at the London Film Festival, asked the team why they never talked to her about writing the screenplay herself. “Ah, darling, I don’t believe in that,” Papandrea replied. “I think authors are terrible adaptors of their books.”

But Strayed, who was already a fan of Hornby’s work, holds no grudge. He was enamored with the book and had sent Strayed an email after he read it. “I had not met Nick at that point, but I knew who he was and loved his work. He wrote, ‘I absolutely loved your book. I think you’re brilliant.’”

The collaboration did not stop there. Strayed, Hornby and Vallée (“Dallas Buyers Club”) worked closely together throughout the entire process. "I gave real notes. Not only was this my book -- it was my life. And I have to live with this,” Strayed said.

But she also realized right away that changes would have to be made on the road from page to screen and she wanted Vallée to make this his own movie. (Strayed told the story of recently having been with her daughter and Vallée. Her daughter introduced him to a friend, saying, “This is Jean-Marc. He directed my mom’s film.” Strayed said she laughed and quickly corrected her: “No … it’s Jean-Marc’s film!”)

nick hornby
Director Jean-Marc Vallée during the filming of "Wild."

Some of the changes in the film rely on cinematic shorthand that had to be employed in order to get the main parts of Strayed’s story onto the screen. For starters, her family was restructured for the film. In life, Strayed grew up with a single mother and two siblings before her mother eventually remarried her stepdad -- who had a prominent role in her life and in the book. In the movie, however, the family unit is simplified to a single mother and two children -- just Strayed and her brother.

In the film, the family grows up in a meager setting. But in the book, Strayed spent a good portion of her childhood in the North Woods of Minnesota on a 40-acre farm.

This cinematic shorthand also extends to some of the darker moments in her life. “I never did have sex with two guys in an alley,” Strayed said, laughing. Alluding to the film’s need to get a point across quickly, she continued, “They had to be like ‘Okay, she’s a slut!’”

It’s the only moment in the movie that pushes her comfort zone, she said. The drug use is pretty accurate. When asked if Hornby added the graphic alley scene himself, Strayed admitted she doesn’t know. “I don’t remember how that scene got there. It’s the only part of the movie that makes me wince, just a little,” she said.

But these types of changes are par for the course when it comes to condensing a 336-page book into a 119-minute film -- and Strayed knows that. “We both hoped that when you experience one you will be driven to the other,” Strayed said of her collective goal with Vallée.

Overall, she feels most intensely how true the film is to her book and her life. “More often, while I’m watching the movie I want to stand up and go, ‘This is exactly how it happened!’”

wild

The scene in the film where Witherspoon takes her first steps on the Pacific Crest Trail was shot in the exact spot in California where Strayed started her journey.

There are other moments that take up little space in her book that Strayed feels truly glow on screen -- like her losing one of her hiking boots over the edge of a cliff, and then out of anger and despair, chucking the other one over the edge along with it. This is the scene that opens both the book and the film.

“When I was writing about that, I was telling a literal story of what happened, but I was also mindful of the metaphor,” Strayed said. “But seeing it as an image on screen is powerful. And I think maybe more powerful in the film than it is in the book. Every time I see it, I get chills.”

“Wild” opens on Dec. 5.

'Rape In The Time Of Celebrity' Reveals The Sad Reality Of Sexual Assault Allegations Against Famous Men

“They’re impossible to touch, but they’ll touch you."

That's how "Rape In The Time Of Celebrity," created by Vana Dabney and Deirdre Devlin, starts out in its parody of how so many famous men are able to shrug off rape allegations, simply because they're celebrities.

Even when multiple women come forward to tell their stories, any nostalgia or positive impact from these men's careers seems to exempt them from the demands that they confront the allegations.

While the video takes a comedic tone, it makes some important points, calling out the media and the public for seemingly going to great effort to avoid discussing sexual assault allegations against celebrities. In a diagram tracking "amount of fame" relative to "forgotten" allegations, "Legend Territory" includes none other than Bill Cosby, Roman Polanski and Woody Allen.

chart

"Bill Cosby is finally paying the consequences of his crimes, at least in his career, but for decades he was able to get away with rape because people refused to believe it," Devlin told The Huffington Post. "They focused on his achievements and his beloved television image instead. This video, which can be hard to watch at times, shows how ugly this mind set can be."

The video is so absurd it's laughable, until you realize that this actually happens all the time. “You know the best part?" A pseudo-celebrity accused of sexual assault in the parody says. "My victims get to see my face everywhere! I’m taking billboards, TV, movies! America loves me. It doesn’t matter what these ‘victims’ say or think. In fact, if they say anything bad about me people are going to hate them for it that’s why most of them stay quiet."

We've been girl-crushing on Candice Huffine from the moment she landed on the cover of Vogue Italia back in 2011. Now, Yahoo Style has given us a few more reasons to love the gorgeous Pirelli calendar star.

In a new interview with the website, Huffine opens up about everything from how she unwinds to how she really feels about her body. Her candid and authentic responses only make us love her even more, and we think you should, too. Here's why:

She keeps it real.

“I get a lot of messages saying, 'I like how you dress because you have my shape and I never knew how to dress for my shape." People want to know the model as a person. I'm not just a voiceless mannequin."

candice

She's the best of both worlds.

"I'm straddling both worlds and markets. I'm relatable as a bubbly catalog girl next door, but I can fit in seamlessly in the high fashion world."

Her first modeling photos (shot by her mom) sound amazing.

"I am standing in the back of my red pickup truck in bootie shorts and a tank top. I thought I was so fly... a diva in a truck!"

candice two

She loves to sleep just as much as we do.

"I love a glass of wine to unwind, my husband and I have a cozy home. When it's cold we stay at home and have a wooden dartboard and play darts. I'd sleep until noon if it wasn't for my husband waking up so early."

She loves Candice Huffine.

"The point is, I love my body and am happy in it, if me showing it to the world can help other ladies in any way, then game on."

2014 Latin Grammys Shared The Spotlight With Obama But Still Shone Brightly

The 2014 Latin Grammys may have shared the spotlight with President Barack Obama on Thursday night, but it didn't mean the awards show shone any less brightly as it celebrated its quinceañera.

At Las Vegas' MGM Grand Garden Arena, Latin music's biggest names gathered to celebrate 15 years of honoring the best within the industry. Calle 13 set a record for most Latin Grammy wins with a new total of 21, but it was Enrique Iglesias' hit "Bailando," featuring Gente De Zona and Descemer Bueno, that dominated the night with three wins, including "Song Of The Year."

The show opened as President Obama concluded his historic announcement on executive action that will grant deportation relief to around 4.4 million undocumented immigrant. Applause filled the venue as the president finished his remarks and many would reference the event later on in the evening.

It was only appropriate that a performance of Calle 13's hit song “El Aguante,” which is an homage to humanity’s resilience, followed the president’s speech. Though frontman René Pérez chose to shed light on the disappearance of the 43 missing students in Ayotzinapa with a shirt showing solidarity with the thousands who were protesting the government that very night.

“I’m going to talk about what’s going on in Mexico, we can’t allow this to keep happening. Viva Mexico!” the singer said.

Eugenio Derbez was the first host to take the stage, opening an evening of many jokes with one referencing Obama’s speech.

“It’s about time that Latinos’ rights are recognized because we stopped being a minority a long time ago, Latinos are part of this country,” Derbez said. “We have always used music to cross borders, in fact I have an uncle who crossed the border inside a piano.”

Kuno Becker, Natalia Jiménez and Jorge Drexler presented the Latin Grammy for best salsa album, which went to Marc Anthony’s “3.0.” The salsero gave one big kiss to his wife Shannon de Lima before taking the stage to accept the award.

The first of many duets of the evening was Ricky Martin and Camila as the Mexican group and Puerto Rican singer performed "Perdón.” The ambiance had a little pick me up soon after with Colombian rising star J Balvín taking the stage to perform his latest single “Ay Vamos.”

Pepe Aguilar’s rancheras could not be forgotten and the Mexican singer was later joined by Miguel Bosé for the second duet of the night.

Sebastián Rulli and Angelique Boyer announced the album of the year, which went to the late Paco de Lucía. The Spanish Flamenco guitarist passed away earlier this year at the age of 66.

The coveted song of the year award was announced not long after, with Enrique Iglesias and Gente de Zona accepting the Latin Grammy via a video link from Paris. Iglesias is currently in Europe on his Sex And Love world tour but also took note that it was a big night for Latinos, in reference to Obama’s announcement.

One of the most awaited duets of the evening was Carlos Vives and Marc Anthony’s performance of their single “Cuando Nos Volvamos A Encontrar,” which seemed to suffer from some sound issues but nevertheless had the venue on their feet.

Best ranchera album went to Pepe Aguilar, who asked that Latinos remain united and dedicated his Latin Grammy to the ranchera icon who inspired him, Vicente Fernández.

Wisin pumped up the the night as he took the stage with Pitbull and Chris Brown. Rubén Blades took that energy and placed it in a beautifully executed tango rendition of his hit “Pedro Navaja,” which had the audience mesmerized as tango dancers moved seductively across the stage.

Pablo Alborán and Jesse & Joy slowed down the night with their ballad “Donde Está El Amor.” The performance was followed by Prince Royce and Maite Perroni presenting the best new artist award to Venezuelan singer Mariana Vega.
Yandel, Farruko and General Gadiel followed with an energetic rendition of "Plakito.”

While several of the performances included elaborate choreography and movement, it was Juanes’ stage set up that stood out the most. The Colombian superstar and his band wore all white within an all-white cube. Psychedelic patterns and vibrant images were projected on the walls as the singer went through many of his hits including “Me Enamora,” “Tengo La Camisa Negra,” and “La Luz.”

One of the biggest surprises of the night came as Magic! performed their mega reggae-pop hit “Rude.” Halfway through the band’s catchy tune, Marc Anthony enters stage right adding Spanish verses to the song.

The Latin Grammy for best tropical album went to Carlos Vives, who spoke about why the award was so special to him.
“Fifteen years ago I had the greatest number of nominations... that night I didn’t win any,” the Colombian star said. “So I accept this 15 years later and in a special way. I share it with my family, this is for Colombia and I want to dedicate it especially to President Obama.”

And just like 15 years ago, Ricky Martin took the stage to perform. This time the Puerto Rican star performed a perfectly choreograph rendition of his new single "Adiós".

Only the legendary Carlos Santana could follow, joined by Pitbull, as they performed the guitarist’s iconic “Oye Como Vas.”
Brazilian model Alessandra Ambrosio broke out her portuguese with “Jane the Virgin” star Jaime Camil as they presented the best vocal pop album to Camila.

While “Bailando” was the big winner of the night, Academy Award-winning Uruguayan singer Jorge Drexler took the record of the year award for his single “Universos Paralelos,” which he dedicated to Colombia where the song was recorded.
Diomedes Diaz, Paco de Lucía, Cheo Feliciano and Argentine rock legend Gustavo Cerati were also remembered in a solemn In Memoriam presentation.

As the evening came to a close, Spanish singer Joan Manuel Serrat took the stage to sing “Mediterráneo” and accept the person of the year award.

And it was only fitting that the song of the year closed off the evening, but since Iglesias was currently on tour, the performance was a broadcast portion of the Spanish star’s Madrid concert with “Latin Grammy” balloons that matched the ones falling in Las Vegas as dancers followed the music.

My Conversation With Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Gina Prince-Bythewood

Tonight I'm joined by British actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who earlier this year drew rave reviews for her breakout role in Belle, and acclaimed director Gina Prince-Bythewood to talk about their new movie, Beyond the Lights. The film, now in theaters, takes a clear-eyed look at how pop music's star-making machine can play havoc with young lives, particularly women. The movie co-stars Nate Parker.

My conversation with Gugu and Gina covered a wide range of issues facing women in the entertainment industry. I asked Gina specifically why she wanted to tell this story, which at its core is a love story, and why it seems so difficult to get movies made about two black people falling in love.
