Starbucks' New, Limited Edition Franken Frappuccino Is Here For Halloween

$

Forget Chestnut Praline and Pumpkin Spice Lattes, Starbucks is getting in the Halloween spirit with the release of its latest seasonal drink, the "Franken Frappuccino."

Announced via Reddit on Monday, a spokesperson for Starbucks confirmed with HuffPost Taste via email that the Franken Frappuccino is a Green Tea Frappuccino with peppermint syrup, white chocolate sauce, java chips and topped with whipped cream and mocha drizzle.

The drink is already available in select Starbucks locations, and as of Wednesday, you can get a sweet deal on the treat -- $3 for a grande Franken Frappucino after 2 p.m. from October 29-31. Rumor has it the pricing is the same for ALL frapps sold after 2 p.m. on the same dates.

Reddit user hells_flower gave one of the most descriptive opinions of the Franken Frapp, saying, "It's surprisingly not bad. It's pretty much that 'secret menu' frappuccino, Grasshopper, except with white mocha and mocha drizzle."

According to Starbucks Melody, the way to make the Franken Frappuccino is to:

Start with a green tea Frappuccino
Add java chips
Add 3 pumps of white mocha sauce
Add 3 pumps of peppermint syrup (and substitute that for the classic syrup – there’s no classic syrup in the Franken Frappuccino.)
Top with whipped cream and mocha drizzle.

Here's more of what to expect at Starbucks:

Personally, it kind of looks like the Monster Mash in liquid form. Will you drink it?

Amy Poehler On Celebrity Feminism Conversation: It's An 'Attempt To Get Us To Talk Sh*t About Each Other'

$

Amy Poehler's memoir is titled Yes Please, but saying "No, thanks" to celebrity feminist infighting is one of the most important lessons the funny lady has offered.

On Oct. 28, Poehler stopped by the AOL offices in New York City as part of the interview speaker series BUILD to discuss Yes Please on the day of its release.

In conversation with Marianne Schnall, founder of Feminist.com, Poehler recalled her past statements on the subject of celebrities rejecting the "feminist" label publicly: "That’s like someone being like, 'I don’t really believe in cars, but I drive one every day and I love that it gets me places and makes life so much easier and faster and I don’t know what I would do without it,"" she said.

Although she stands by those statements, Poehler told Schnall that women's discussions about feminism shouldn't be put up for public scrutiny.

“This discussion -- the media discussion of who is and isn’t a feminist -- is yet another example of the media attempting to divide us, to take us and split us apart, and our view among each other," said Poehler. "So it’s like, 'She said she was, she said she wasn’t, now she is, now she’s not, she made her one.' It’s just bullshit. It’s yet another attempt to get us to talk shit about each other, for people to bait you into [responding to] 'What do you think about so and so?'"

Women's ability to speak openly about differences of opinion is precisely the point of feminism, Poehler said:

First of all, it’s none of my business what they they want to say or do -- that’s what feminism is. And also, what you believe or say at 20 is different at 40, is different at 60. I think as women, we need to continue to constantly celebrate what we have in common and share, and stop letting this society focus on how we’re different. It’s really frustrating. Yet again, the topic of feminism is another example of people cooping it, taking it out of our hands, and we have to kind of take it back.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) — A Tennessee man being arrested on charges of illegal marijuana possession told police he was Academy Award-winning actor Denzel Washington.

Officers told 21-year-old Justin Lee Seay of Memphis he wasn't fooling anyone — and quickly found that he had violated his probation on a separate case. The Daily News Journal reported (http://on.dnj.com/1oW9Frb ) that police arrested Seay on Monday night after responding to a complaint of noise at his apartment.

While being arrested, police say, Seay declared he was Washington. His real identity surfaced after police booked him.

Officers say they found several bags of marijuana inside the apartment.

Watch Nas React To Seeing An Ancestor's Bill Of Sale Into Slavery

During Tuesday's episode of PBS' documentary series "Finding Your Roots," rapper Nas was shown a devastating document from the past: a paper receipt for an ancestor's sale into slavery.

Sitting opposite the show's host, scholar and filmmaker Henry Louis Gates, Nas flipped through a book of documents and photos related to his predecessors. Among them was an 1859 bill of sale announcing the sale of his great-great-great-grandmother, Pocahontas, to a Virginia landowner when she was around 15 years old.

"A receipt for a human being," Nas responded with an exhale.

The Queens-bred rapper then learned Pocahontas' owner, Benjamin Franklin Little, paid less than a thousand dollars.

"They paid $830 for my great-great-great-grandma?" Nas said, stunned. "I got more than that in my pocket right now... This is painful, now. To see that, that hurts."

The two then looked at a photo of Little, who according to Gates owned six of Nas' third grandparents.

"This is the face my ancestors looked at every day," Nas said. "Now I'm looking into their world."

Sofia Coppola Made A Charming Holiday Movie Out Of Gap Ads

Sofia Coppola has made a series of Gap ads disguised as a holiday-themed short film. Titled "Gauntlet," "Mistletoe," "Crooner" and "Pinball," the spots show families gathering together for Christmas and Thanksgiving. There's unrequited love, family drama, reunited friends and an adorable boy singing karaoke.

In keeping with the way Coppola uses music in her films "The Bling Ring," "Lost In Translation" and "The Virgin Suicides," the soundtrack includes "I Got Stripes” by Johnny Cash, "I'm Not Ready for Love” by The Promise, “Cry” by Johnnie Ray and “Deep Down” performed by Hazel and the Jolly Boys.

"Sofia has brilliantly translated Gap’s snapshots of these authentic family characters to the screen," Seth Farbman, Gap’s Global Chief Marketing Officer, said in a statement. “Sofia is a great fashion icon and helped us bring our fashion themes to life alongside the storytelling of family fun for the festive season."

As part of Gap's Dress Normal campaign, Coppola's is the second batch of Gap ads by an award-winning director; David Fincher released four black-and-white videos for the company in August.

Carol Alt: Renee Zellweger's New Look Spawned From 'An Issue With Her Lids'

Renee Zellweger's dramatically changed look has been a large part of the media narrative as of late, with Zellweger coming forth and claiming that it's simply a result of her living "a different, happy, more fulfilling life."

But that's not what former supermodel Carol Alt heard, she explained in a HuffPost Live interview on Wednesday.

"I know Renee had an issue with her lids. They were very heavy and I believe what she was having was that kind of an issue," she told host Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani.

The Sports Illustrated cover girl wishes Zellweger had been more open about getting a procedure done, as well as her reasons for doing it.

"I think that she should've just said 'I had a medical issue. I had to take care of it. My lids were heavy'," she said. "I have several girlfriends who have heavy lids and did that, because they couldn't fully open their eye."

Despite reports of the contrary, the 53-year-old says she's never had any work done herself because she's afraid of scarring.

"Life & Style -- thank you guys by the way, I'm very flattered -- said I had [a surgery] when you cut your eye lids -- I was flattered!," she laughed.

'SNL's' Michael Che Makes Absurdly Misguided Comments About Street Harassment

Comedian Michael Che's job as a "Saturday Night Live" Weekend Update co-host is to poke fun at popular culture. But there isn't anything funny about street harassment.

A social experiment video that went viral this week gave viewers a unique look at a woman experiencing harassment while in public. The video shows a female actress getting dozens of catcalls while walking around New York City for 10 hours. Che took to Instagram on Wednesday to weigh in on the video, but he seemingly made light of catcalling with a sarcastic apology to all the women he has said "hi" to or called "beautiful."

"I can't imagine what that must feel like," he added.

i just saw the catcalling video & i am disgusted.

Social media users called out Che for the tasteless comments.

Che went on to accuse his critics of misunderstanding.

He later uploaded a follow-up Instagram post, writing that he's no longer able to voice controversial statements because he's a celebrity.

i just read my instagram. i am DISGUSTED.

Street harassment is a human rights issue, according to activists fighting against it. Holly Kearl, founder of the nonprofit Stop Street Harassment, has described how promoting a culture of catcalling can lead to even more severe problems.

"The acceptance of street harassment, the portrayal of it as a compliment or a joke, creates a culture where it is normal to disrespect someone or to comment on them or to touch them without their consent," she told Ebony last year. "That culture helps make rape okay and lets rapists get away with their crime."

Salon's Sarah Gray summarized the problem with Che's dismissal of catcalling, noting how he failed to make the connection between street harassment and entitlement:

Though comedy is often used as a method to explore topical and uncomfortable subjects — to both confront and understand them — this joke missed the mark. It ultimately reveals that Che does not understand what is so problematic about street harassment: Men feeling entitled to direct their unsolicited thoughts at women — often but not limited to comments on their appearance or asking them to smile.

A rep for Che was not immediately available for comment.

Here's the viral street harassment video which prompted Che's misguided comments:

'Serena' Is What A Failed Oscar Contender Looks Like

"Serena" has faced an arduous journey to the big screen, but the movie's first trailer does a good job hiding that fact. It feels like a surefire Oscar contender, even though the Depression-era drama has been delayed since 2012 and is now slated for an awards-averse release in March 2015.

What it does have going for it is Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper in their third movie together (after "Silver Linings Playbook" and "American Hustle"). Set in the 1930s, Cooper plays the owner of a struggling North Carolina timber empire. Lawrence stars as his wife, who learns she's unable to bear children. Early reviews haven't been kind.

Based on a 2008 novel by Ron Rash and directed by Susanne Bier, whose "In a Better World" won the 2011 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, "Serena" is scheduled to hit on-demand services Feb. 26. Magnolia Pictures will release the movie theatrically on March 27.

Ellen DeGeneres has a long history of scaring her talk show guests, and she did not disappoint when Jake Gyllenhaal stopped by on an episode that aired Wednesday.

In the clip, DeGeneres -- seemingly innocent -- asks Gyllenhaal about his preference for dark films. "I have this belief sometimes that if you go into the darkness it can be illuminating," Gyllenhaal begins. But suddenly, the "Nightcrawler" actor is interrupted by a terrifying creature that pops out from a coffee table and scares him so badly that all he can say is "Oh my god, what the fuck?"

Tom Brady took to Facebook to wish the Celtics luck at the start of their NBA season Wednesday -- and did it in the cutest way.

The Patriots quarterback posted a photo of himself as a boy in Celtics gear ahead of the team's opener against the Brooklyn Nets.

While the headband and even the uniform are perhaps Photoshopped, the athlete has really been scoring on the Internet lately. Boston.com noted this gem that appeared before the Patriots beat the Chicago Bears.

"Tom, you are killing it on social media these days!" one fan wrote.

Brady is now in a better place to wield his sense of humor, SportsGrid wrote, because the Patriots have won four games in a row.

Amy Poehler's Honest Take On The Challenges Of New Parenthood

$

Amy Poehler has been out promoting her new book, which is wonderful because she keeps doling out funny and wise discoveries about life. On Tuesday's "Fresh Air," one of the topics she touched upon was what it's like to be a new mom.

Poehler makes her feelings clear about the guilt that moms are supposed to have, in the book. She writes:

"There is an unspoken pact that women are supposed to follow. I am supposed to act like I constantly feel guilty about being away from my kids. (I don't. I love my job.) Mothers who stay at home are supposed to pretend they are bored and wish they were doing more corporate things. (They don't. They love their job.)"

When NPR's Terry Gross asked her to elaborate, the mom of two revealed a little more about her personal experience. Poehler acknowledged her family history of postpartum depression, but said knowing about it did little to prepare her for how she would actually feel after her first son, Archie, was born.

"I look back now and realize that I was unprepared for what my emotions and body and energy level would, you know, consist of, " Poehler said, going on to explain how going back to work full-time was particularly stressful.

I had to go to L.A. and start this show, and my baby was only a few months old and it was a very difficult time. It was harder than I think I wanted to admit at the time. I think I tortured myself a bit in that first year about what kind of mother I was and could I do this thing well and also give birth to this new show. ...

There's not enough ... working mothers who kind of talk about who they leaned on and how they got through that difficult time. There's this thing where nobody likes to talk about how difficult things are. Everybody likes to talk about [how] easy it is or can be if you only do X, Y and Z.

But it's difficult to be away from your baby and to be working hard and also want to be working -- and it's difficult to be staying at home after you've been a person who maybe wasn't.

Poehler doesn't claim to know it all, but has certainly given very helpful advice to other moms in her position in the past. Perhaps she said it best when she revealed, “When you’re a twerking mother, balance is really important because you don't want to go too low and blow out your butt and bust your knee."

Cosby Has No One to Blame But Cosby for His Sullied Image

$

For decades Bill Cosby has been enshrined as America's most treasured TV Dad, the quintessential symbol of all that is good and wholesome in family values conscious America. The adulation for Cosby is so colossal and enduring that he's been rewarded with yet another run at a TV series and a widely acclaimed biography. But what do we make of the other Cosby? The one who a 46-year-old artist now claims drugged and raped her when she was 17? She's just the latest to pile on Cosby as a serial sexual predator. Her tale of alleged Cosby abuse echoes in detail the sordid tales of druggings, rapes, and other assorted sexual abuses by 13 other women that spanned decades.

Those were the same decades that Cosby was propped up on the top rung of the family values pedestal. When the allegations first surfaced some years back, an angry Cosby screamed foul, and claimed that the charges were nothing but a shakedown of a rich and famous celebrity. Though no criminal charges have ever been filed against him, Cosby has quietly settled lawsuits against him out of court. This go round Cosby has said nothing about the latest sexual abuse charges. But a spokesperson has called the accusations "preposterous."

The tragic irony is that he has done more than his women accusers to massacre his own image.
Cosby inadvertently made himself a sitting duck for the finger-pointing when in his well-meaning, but ill-tempered tirades he repeatedly lambasted poor black teens and their parents for being lousy parents, educational slackers, for butchering the English language, and for their alleged thuggish behavior. The indictment was way too broad, too sweeping, and it inched dangerously close to reinforcing the same vile racial stereotypes that Cosby has spent most of his professional career fighting against. To no surprise, a horde of conservative commentators and unreconstructed bigots have stumbled over themselves to hail Cosby as the ultimate truth-giver and laud him for having the courage to air dirty racial laundry.

Now Cosby has been dumped back on the bad behavior hot seat. If America's number one Dad can ride high up in the moral saddle and lecture other blacks on their alleged bad behavior, than he should be held to the same lofty standard. The hint of sexual misconduct left him wide open to the accusation that he was a hypocrite and a fraud.

There were warning signs that Cosby might eventually be ripe for a tumble. In 1997 he made a bombshell confession that in the '70s he had an extra marital affair, and was accused of fathering an illegitimate daughter. There were allegations of shakedowns, under the table hush money payoffs, an extortion trial and conviction of the woman who claimed to be his illicit daughter, and an avalanche of embarrassing kiss and tell tabloid gossip stories on Cosby.

He dodged the bullet on that one. In sex scandal driven America, it's a virtual rite of passage for the celebrity, rich and famous to be embroiled in peep show scandals. The public delights in that kind of titillation. It was hard to ban in Boston a guy who had shelled out millions to minority student scholarship funds, black colleges and had worked tirelessly for civil rights causes over the years. Cosby also continued to rail against the "clown," "coon," and "buck dance" image that blacks propagated of themselves in TV sitcoms. He pushed and prodded the film and TV industry to do more to promote more positive black images on screen.

However, the glue on Cosby's still largely intact good guy image loosened when the parade of women leveled the drugging and sexual assault charges against him. Cosby initially vehemently denied the charges, but swiftly shifted into damage control mode and, as he delicately put it, admitted to having a "sexual encounter" with one of them. But, he quickly added the requisite, that it was consensual. This still fit the jaded public belief that the rich and famous routinely have their little sexual trysts, and who makes a big deal out of that?

Cosby defenders have again rushed to the barricades to defend him reminding all that allegations are just that, allegations, and not proof of any wrongdoing. And that these are nothing more than crass and self-serving put-up jobs to character assassinate yet another high-profile, outspoken black man and thereby sully all blacks as moral degenerates. They are in part right. They are allegations only, and despite the cheerleading of him, he's not totally immune to being the recipient of the same bashing he's unceremoniously piled on other blacks for their plight.

America's favorite dad may be right that his parade of sexual accusers is out to gouge a star. But this doesn't change the fact that now many paint him as anything other than a model Dad. He can only blame himself for his sullied image.

Prepare yourselves. The truth is even more shocking than the Red Wedding.

The Internet Isn't Very Happy With 'Terminator: Genisys'

The plot of "Terminator: Genisys," the new entry in the "Terminator" franchise, was revealed in this week's edition of Entertainment Weekly. Fans were not pleased. Here's the relevant information from EW.com:

Twist No. 1? Sarah Connor isn’t the innocent she was when Linda Hamilton first sported feathered hair and acid-washed jeans in the role. Nor is she Hamilton's steely zero body-fat warrior in 1991's T2. Rather, the mother of humanity's messiah was orphaned by a Terminator at age 9. Since then, she's been raised by (brace yourself) Schwarzenegger's Terminator -- an older T-800 she calls "Pops" -- who is programmed to guard rather than to kill. As a result, Sarah is a highly trained antisocial recluse who’s great with a sniper rifle but not so skilled at the nuances of human emotion.

As Meredith Woerner wrote for io9.com: "The hell?" Woerner wasn't alone in confusion over the plot. "Papa Terminator? This sounds an awful lot like a remake of 'T2' to me," wrote Devin Faraci at Badass Digest.

Ahead more reactions to "Terminator: Genisys" and the Entertainment Weekly cover. "Terminator: Genisys" is out on July 1, 2015.

Boy George Reveals The Surprising Thing That People Always Ask Of Him

There's never a shortage of questions to ask Boy George, but there is one gay-related inquiry that the music icon hears all the time.

During a conversation with HuffPost Live's Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani on Wednesday, Boy George was asked if people ever use the occasion of meeting him to come out of the closet, as Melissa Etheridge has said is often the case in her life. That specifically doesn't happen a lot, he said, but he did share what he hears much more often.

"People always say to me, 'Meet my friend, do you think he's gay?' I get that a lot," he said.

But if you ever get the chance to pose that question to Boy George, don't get your hopes too high -- he added that his gaydar leaves something to be desired, except when somebody is obviously "a mincing fairy."

Hip-hop mogul Marion "Suge" Knight and comedian Micah "Katt" Williams have been arrested for allegedly stealing a camera from a celebrity photographer.

The Los Angeles County district attorney's office charged both men on Wednesday with one count of robbery for allegedly taking a camera from a woman outside a Beverly Hills studio on September 5.

Knight, the co-founder of Death Row Records, faces life in prison because of a previous conviction for assault with a deadly weapon, KVVU reports. The Associated Press reports that the charge carries a possible 30-year sentence for Knight.

Williams was busted when he showed up for court, according to TMZ. He was appearing in Inglewood on an unrelated assault charge and could be locked up for seven years.

Bail was set for Knight at $1 million and $75,000 for Williams, according to NBC Southern California.

'American Horror Story: Freak Show' Episode 4 Recap: The Trials Of Twisty

$
0
0
*** WARNING: Contains spoilers! Please do not read on unless you've seen Episode 4 of "American Horror Story: Freak Show," titled "Edward Mordrake (Part 2)." Or if you don't mind spoilers, go right ahead! ***

I'm hard-pressed to think of a another TV show that's ever mixed such random, senseless violence with moments of heart-tugging sincerity. It's legitimately insane how "American Horror Story: Freak Show" can nonchalantly show imagery of people fornicating in backlit tents while simultaneously telling a sad, wrenching story. You can run the gamut of emotions in less than five minutes -- from outright sorrow (ahh, poor Seal Boy) to straight-up disturbed (what sorts of people were you associating with, Elsa?).

Edward Mordrake and his green dry ice are still at the freak show, trawling for "the one." In a clever (yet somewhat lazy) exercise in exposition, we learn most of the other freaks' backstories. They're all heartbreaking, once you look past the ridiculousness of Mordrake and his two faces sitting there, hands on cane, listening like a shrink. I just feel like between Part 1 and Part 2 of these episodes, Mordrake became less scary and developed into more of a reset button, there to start the show's plot afresh. More on that later.

At least now we know Elsa's real backstory: she was a brutal dominatrix who couldn't get work as an actress, so she sexually tortured people for an audience. Sexy lingerie? OK. Dog collar? Yes, I can see that. The guy barking? Role-playing. But the nail-covered toilet seat? That seemed a bit ... rustically painful, no? Whatever floats your boat, I guess. In any case, Elsa gets in serious trouble and is drugged by amateur snuff filmmakers (they said she was "lucky," so I'm only assuming they killed other women), who then proceed to cut off her legs for the camera. Never would have guessed that was the cause.

Mordrake is about to kill Elsa to join his band of ghost freaks -- but we know, as "AHS" fans, that Lange isn't going anywhere in Episode 4 -- when he hears music and is drawn to Twisty's trailer. At this point, everyone's escaped, thanks to the kidnapped Jane Levy lookalike and some quick thinking by Jimmy. Then we finally, finally get to hear Twisty's backstory. (Kudos to the makeup and special-effects people here: Twisty's horrifying mouth is something to behold, especially when he talks and his tongue is lolling back and forth.)

As I wrote about a few episodes ago, "AHS" can't just tell a sob story and have us forgive Twisty. As awful as the events leading up to his attempted (and failed) suicide are, you can't just run amok in a town and kill random people. Despite his reasons, he's still a murderer, a grisly one at that, so it's difficult to feel sympathy. His story is delivered remarkably well by John Carroll Lynch, complete with clown tears. Nothing's sadder than the tears of a clown... but then Mordrake puts him out of his misery and takes him into the afterlife, and we're left momentarily killer-less.

All is well at the freak show too, when the townspeople show up with food and handshakes to thank Jimmy for saving them. Still hung up on Meep (as he should be), Jimmy is hesitant but eventually cracks a smile when his real-life love Maggie looks at him lovingly. I hope you all saw Dot's face there. This is not going to end well for our "psychic." Two heads kill better than one. Maggie's days are numbered, that's for sure.

Peace is never long for "AHS." Back in the forest, along comes Dandy, who gleefully puts on Twisty's mask. With it, he's somehow more powerful, and he returns home to kill Nora. He slices her throat like it ain't no thang and emits a laugh that's on-par with Tim Curry's "It" clown. Can this character graduate from snivelling brat to spineless killer? I think yes, but deep down he'll always be weak. I will say there is a scarier element to Dandy's soulless journey to feel something, anything, as opposed to Twisty's psychotic delusions.

So think about it: we're armed now. We're reset. We know the backstories, we know everyone's motives, we have a new killer, the townspeople aren't the enemy (at least for now), there's camaraderie among the freaks, love is in the air. For a hot minute we'll have some unity and a fresh start, until everything gets all "AHS" on us again. I give Episode 5 about ten minutes before that happens.

Oh, Denis O'Hare shows up disguising himself as a talent scout? Change that ten minutes to zero for Episode 5.

Freak Of The Week: Twisty takes it. He's been thoroughly terrifying these past few weeks -- thanks for the disturbing ride.

Random Thoughts:

  • The accents. So distracting. Some lines are delivered like we're watching some bad community theatre.

  • The harpsichord music playing whenever Edward Mordrake is on-camera is straight off the Halloween sounds CD you can buy at the dollar store.

  • At least Twisty got his mouth back in the afterlife. Small graces.

  • Again, I hope kids weren't watching tonight's episode. "Mommy, why is that person peeing into a bowl on the bed?" "Daddy, why is that man saying 'Thank you" after she made him sit on a toilet seat covered in nails?" Good luck, parents.

  • Is there anything scarier than a person putting pantyhose over their head, and then covering their lips in lipstick? Oh yes, cutting your legs off after drugging you.

  • No musical number tonight. I guess the showrunners figured we'd already experienced enough emotion.

  • I hear Lily Rabe will be guesting this season after all. Let's just fast-forward to that episode, please and thanks.

Boy George offered an eloquent explanation of his evolving spirituality during a conversation with HuffPost Live on Wednesday.

The music icon, who is set to reunite with his band Culture Club for a tour this year, is a mix of many ideas. He had a "strong Catholic upbringing," he eventually became a vegetarian thanks to preaching from Hare Krishna devotees, and he's practiced Nichiren Buddhism for the last four years.

"I always say I'm Catholic in my complications and Buddhist in my aspirations," Boy George told HuffPost Live's Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani.

Embracing Buddhism, which includes "morning gongyo," has made a significant impact on him.

"It's a practice that improves my life on a daily basis," Boy George said. "It changes the way I behave. It changes the way I behave towards myself, towards other people, and I would highly recommend it."
