Will Smith Isn't Returning For 'Independence Day 2' After All, According To Latest Report

0
0
We learned back in October that the long-gestating "Independence Day" sequel has two working scripts: one with Will Smith and one without. Now, according to Deadline.com, it looks like the one that doesn't feature Smith is more likely to enter production.

An anonymous source tells Deadline that Smith has informed Fox he is not on board for the follow-up to the popular sci-fi flick. The early reports indicate Smith has not yet officially broken the news to director Roland Emmerich, who previously said the actor's involvement was "looking good" despite the fact that he's "too expensive" and "too marquee." (HuffPost Entertainment reached out to Smith's rep for confirmation and will update this post upon hearing back.)

The release of "Independence Day 2" -- also known as "ID Forever" -- will coincide the 1996 original's 20th anniversary. It was delayed from July 2015 to July 2016 to avoid a busy summer that includes "Jurassic World," "The Fantastic Four," "Terminator: Genesis" and "Ant-Man." Even if Smith doesn't return, we may still see a star-studded spectacle, as Michael B. Jordan is rumored for the lead, and "Independence Day" stars Jeff Goldbum and Bill Pullman are reportedly expected to reprise their roles.

The 1996 film became a box office behemoth, collecting $817 million worldwide and winning the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. It's often credited as having jump-started Hollywood's big-budget disaster-film infatuation.

Beatlemania Is A Moment In Culture Never To Be Repeated

0
0
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Musical moments that capture the attention of a national audience — and beyond — never seem to be in short supply. Last week, Bruno Mars set a ratings record with 115 million people watching his Super Bowl performance. A few months ago, the talk was about Beyonce's surprise album. And there's still discussion of That Miley Moment at the MTV Video Music Awards.

But moments that spark a musical revolution? A dramatic altering of the pop culture landscape? A true moment for historians to analyze? Rare indeed, which is what makes the 50th anniversary of what is considered the start of Beatlemania so remarkable — and so unlikely to happen again. "The media has gotten so fragmented now ... there's 50 things in a marketing plan for an artist today," said Revolt TV President (and former MTV executive) Andy Schuon. "The ability to fan that fire and to give it the kind of intensity that 'The Ed Sullivan Show' could get doesn't exist today."

Sunday marks the 50th anniversary of the Beatles' performance on "Ed Sullivan," their first appearance in America. Nielsen says 45 percent of all TV sets in use at the time were tuned into the broadcast, with fans and the uninitiated alike gathered shoulder to shoulder in their living rooms. The Beatles landed on a trigger point when they hit America. It was a pop culture sonic boom spurred by talent, timing and luck that's still rattling the windows.

"This was a seismic shift in American culture and it gave the teenagers not only a voice but a way of being, a way of thinking that had never occurred before," Beatles biographer Bob Spitz said.

"Previous to the Beatles' arrival here, teenagers were an appendage in the family. After that, the teenager became one of the dominant forces in the family. They became a marketable force and that didn't happen with Elvis. This was pure."

Grammy Awards producer Ken Ehrlich, who produced this Sunday's TV special "The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute to The Beatles" on CBS (8 p.m. EST), vividly remembers the electricity surrounding the British band's appearance as he gathered with friends at a boarding house in Athens, Ohio, near the Ohio University campus to watch the show.

Fans' interest had been stoked expertly thanks to their recent hits, including "I Want to Hold Your Hand," and a promotional campaign that included mop-top wigs.

"Everybody was waiting for it," Ehrlich said. "People hadn't seen them. There weren't VCRs, there weren't DVRs. There was nothing. If you didn't see it on one of three TV channels, you didn't see it."

A generation of baby boomers — teenagers just turning 13 and 14 — was poised for the moment: The relatively new medium of TV, the growing media culture in the U.S. and a burgeoning post-war affluence that allowed millions of teens to bond through the black-and-white broadcast that began with a mop-top shaking version of "All My Loving."

"Entire families wanted to see what was going on here because the phenomenon of The Beatles arriving here was so spectacular, so different from anything we'd ever experienced before, and everybody wanted to look at it," Spitz said. "The kids wanted to look at it because they wanted to be like The Beatles and the parents watched it because they wanted to see what they were up against. Really. It was kind of like a morbid fascination."

It was a unique opportunity. Millions of kids and the equally young medium of television were coming of age. The two found each other willing allies. They combined with factors that made the moment so startling and powerful it simply can't be recreated in our hyper-media age.

For example, every major pop star in the world — including Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr — appeared or performed at last month's Grammy Awards. More than 28 million people tuned in — a huge number in modern television — but one that pales compared with Feb. 9, 1964 when at least 73 million viewers tuned in.

The competition for the Grammys was legion: Besides all the other entertainment on more than 100 other channels, there's Netflix, video games, apps, ESPN, Facebook, Twitter, Spotify, iPads and Kindles, all vying for attention. Even Mars' gigantic audience last Sunday was smaller on a percentage basis.

"At this moment Paul and I are the only two people who know what that experience was like and it was incredible. Incredible," Starr said. " ... The Beatles are The Beatles — let's be honest. There was no bigger band in the land, and I don't really believe there is any today, you know?"

Michelle Obama Offers Advice For Justin Bieber's Mom

0

If Justin Bieber were Michelle Obama's son, she would "pull him close," the first lady told Univision in an interview Friday (Feb. 7).

“I don’t know if it would be advice as much as action," she said. "I would be very present in his life right now. And I would be probably with him a good chunk of the time, just there to talk, to figure out what’s going on in his head, to figure out who’s in his life and who’s not, you know.”

Obama added that she feels her children seek parental advice, emphasizing that Bieber is "still a kid, he's still growing up."

Bieber's actual mom, Pattie Mallette, has come under scrutiny, in light of Bieber's egging and drug scandals. “If Justin’s struggling, don’t kick him when he’s down or condemn him -- pray for him," she said in defense of her son.

The question of how the first lady would care for Bieber arises from a petition of the White House requesting the singer be deported following his recent arrest. At the time of this post's publication, the petition has received 252,782 signatures, more than double it's goal of 100,000.

Unfortunately, the only thing less likely than Barack Obama having Bieber deported is Michelle Obama deciding to adopt him.

'Silicon Valley' Teaser Promises More Penis Jokes On HBO

HBO takes on the tech world in the new teaser for "Silicon Valley." The eight-episode half-hour sitcom is set to debut on April 6 and, based on the short clip below, young hot shots in the Bay Area are about to get roasted, HBO style.

The comedy from Mike Judge ("Office Space") follows four friends trying to make it in the booming tech industry. They'll come face to face with those monolithic corporate campuses, TED Talks and fancy bowls of ramen. In preparation for "Silicon Valley, Judge and executive producer Alex Berg researched the huge tech boom developing in the Bay Area. At the TV Critics Association winter press tour, Judge commented on real-life tech executives. "They all have to shroud their capitalism with this 'we're making the world a better place' thing," he said.

The cast includes Thomas Middleditch ("The Office"), T.J. Miller ("Seeking a Friend For The End Of The World"), Zach Woods ("The Office"), Kumail Nanjiani ("Franklin & Bash"), Martin Starr (“Party Down”), Josh Brener (“The Internship”), Christopher Evan Welch (“The Master”) and Amanda Crew ("Jobs").

"Silicon Valley" premieres on Sunday, April 6, 10:30 p.m. EST on HBO.

George Clooney's 'Monuments Men' Premieres In Europe, Where Lost Art Is A Headline Staple

0

BERLIN (AP) — George Clooney's World War II art-rescue drama "The Monuments Men" made its European debut on Saturday, coinciding with a recent upsurge of interest in the fate of art looted by the Nazis. Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman and others joined Clooney to present the movie at the Berlin International Film Festival — but attention focused squarely on the director, co-writer and star.

REALITY MIRRORS ART News in November that authorities had found more than 1,400 art works at the apartment of a reclusive German collector and were examining whether hundreds of pieces were seized by the Nazis shone a spotlight on the issue. "It's a story that's going to keep coming up, because of course there's still an awful lot of art that's missing and will be found in lots of people's basements," Clooney said at a news conference.

"It just happened to be one amazing find," he said. "But I'm glad it's part of the conversation again, because it's a good conversation to have about the responsibility of giving back things that don't belong to you."

UNUSUAL HEROES

The movie follows a World War II platoon whose mission is to rescue artworks from the Nazis as the war moves toward its end. It's based on a true story and adapted from a book by Robert Edsel.

Clooney acknowledged that "Hollywood does like a good World War II story" and has been making them for a long time — but this story, he said, offered something new.

"It wasn't to make a patriotic film as much as I thought it was to talk about a unique group of people who did something for the first time in the history of war — which is the victor didn't keep the spoils, they gave it back," he said. "And I thought that that was a rather extraordinary story to tell."

NOT SO CYNICAL

"The Monuments Men" came to the screen after co-writer and producer Grant Heslov read Edsel's book and showed it to Clooney. "He and I had been doing rather cynical movies for quite some time — and we'd been talking about doing something that was a little less cynical, because we're not quite as cynical as the films we tend to make," Clooney said.

The concept reminded him of films he loved when he was growing up, such as "The Guns of Navarone" and "Kelly's Heroes," he added.

A STICKY MOMENT

A journalist stood up and told Clooney she'd been preparing her question for two weeks. "Are you aware that you play the main role in the erotic fantasies for many women in the world, and that ... you're doing something nice for the mental health of women all over the world?," she asked.

"Why, thank you," Clooney deadpanned — adding, after a long pause: "I thought that you were going to ask a question."

Lana Del Rey beat Interscope Records to the punch by revealing that her next album, "Ultra-Violence," is headed for a May 1 release. A YouTube video that surfaced Saturday features a fan asking when the album will arrive, to which Del Rey responds, "It's coming out soon." 'How I Met Your Mother' Series Finale Script Has Been Written ... Finally

The "How I Met Your Mother" finale script has been written and it's guaranteed to make you cry.

Show creator Carter Bays tweeted on Saturday (Feb. 8) that he had read the script for the show's final episode, and if his reaction is any indicator, we're going to weep ... a LOT.

In January, Bays and co-creator Craig Thomas told The Hollywood Reporter that they hadn't written the final episode just yet. After nine seasons, they found it too hard to say goodbye. "We're stalling writing it out of sheer nostalgia and fear that we'll be sobbing the whole time," Thomas said.

The hour-long finale, "Last Forever," will air on March 31 and Thomas said that it will cover all the time between present day and 2030, the year in which future Ted talks to his kids.

Earlier this week, Bays tweeted a photo of a presumably old document titled, "How I Met Your Mother - 'Finale' Writer's First Draft," dated all the way back to 2006.

It's common "HIMYM" fan knowledge, that Bays and Thomas have been planning the ending for years. In fact, they shot part of it back in 2006 before Ted's kids aged. During a Reddit question and answer session, Bays even said "We've been slowly crafting the last 10 minutes of the show probably since it started, but the actual writing of it hasn't happened until just recently."

Oof. We're already getting all the feels.

"How I Met Your Mother" airs Mondays, 8 p.m. EST on CBS.

George Zimmerman's Controversial Celebrity Boxing Match Canceled

George Zimmerman's controversial celebrity boxing match has been officially canceled.

Amidst heavy criticism for organizing the March 1 fight, celebrity boxing promoter Damon Feldman announced the fight's cancellation on Twitter Saturday and apologized for offending anyone with the proposed match.

Zimmerman was found not guilty in July 2013 for the fatal shooting of unarmed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Florida.

Feldman announced in a press release on Feb. 5, that Zimmerman would fight rapper DMX in a celebrity boxing match, however the announcement was unconfirmed by the rapper.

In response to the fight's cancellation, a representative for DMX emailed The Huffington Post with a statement, saying: "Damon Feldman has announced that the George Zimmerman fight is cancelled via his Twitter. As previously stated, DMX never agreed to the fight and we thank you for all of the support from DMX's fans. This situation will not affect any of DMX's upcoming concerts in America or around the world."

When rumors of the fight first began circulating earlier this month, rapper The Game told TMZ he would love to "beat the f**k out of" George Zimmerman in the ring come March, and told the news outlet, "I would not be boxing for me. I'd be boxing for the legacy of Trayvon Martin and for his family."

Woody Allen Sexual Assault Case Has Uncertain Future

NEW YORK (AP) — A week bracketed by op-ed letters of accusation and denial left little clarity and scant hope for resolution in a bitter saga that has haunted Woody Allen and the Farrow family for more than two decades.

Allen responded to adopted daughter Dylan Farrow's allegation that he sexually assaulted her when she was 7 with a letter published Friday by the New York Times. He declared it would be his "final word on this entire matter." But the next steps are uncertain, with the possibility of legal recourse and continued scrutiny in the weeks and months ahead.

The rampant debate sparked by Farrow's accusation will likely continue to stir questions over the alleged molestation, how claims of sexual assault are publicly weighed, and the legacy of Allen's work as a filmmaker.

Simpson has been very open in the past about her pregnancy weight gain and her attempts at weight loss, mainly through Weight Watchers. After her first pregnancy with daughter Maxwell, Simpson lost 60 pounds on the point-oriented diet.

"I'm not a supermodel. My body is not bouncing back like a supermodel. I'm just your everyday woman who is trying to feel good and be healthy for her daughter, her fiancé and herself," she said at the time.

After giving birth to son Ace in June 2013, Simpson admitted: "I'm a lot more confident this time around."

Shia LaBeouf Walks Out Of 'Nymphomaniac' Press Conference

0
0
BERLIN (AP) — Lars von Trier brought an extra-long version of his "Nymphomaniac Volume I" to the Berlin International Film Festival on Sunday, a cut that increases to nearly 2 ½ hours the first installment of the two-part drama about a woman's sexual life from girlhood to age 50. The Danish director left his stars to do the talking — some of them, anyway.

SEVEN PAGES OF RAGE Uma Thurman enjoyed letting off the "fury of woman scorned" in a monologue von Trier wrote for her in the movie. "It was a real great challenge to memorize seven pages of Lars' female diatribe of rage," she told reporters.

"Lars kept saying I was overacting, but that's nothing new," Thurman added.

SLOW DOWN

Christian Slater said that the eccentric director was "patient, gentle, kept telling me to slow down." That, he said, was a big contrast with Hollywood, where "they always want things to move so quickly — and it was nice to actually be on a set where there was actually some real time given to capture moments."

NOT TALKING

Von Trier turned up to a photo call sporting a t-shirt with the logo of the Cannes Film Festival and the words "Persona non grata, official selection." In 2011, von Trier was ejected from the Cannes event after a bizarre, rambling news conference in which he expressed sympathy with Adolf Hitler. He said afterward he had been joking, later issuing an apology and then saying he would refrain from future public statements.

The director skipped Sunday's news conference.

SO LONG, SEAGULLS

Shia LaBeouf didn't stay long either. A question as to whether the actors were worried about the film's sex scenes elicited the response: "When the seagulls follow the trawler, it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea. Thank you very much." He then walked out.

LaBeouf's line was borrowed from French soccer player Eric Cantona, who baffled reporters with it in the mid-1990s following his suspension for a flying kick on a heckler.

'The Lego Movie' Box Office Stuns With $69 Million Opening

NEW YORK (AP) — "The Lego Movie" clicked with moviegoers, assembling an exceptional $69.1 million debut at the weekend box office.

The better-than-expected result made the Warner Bros. collaboration with the Danish toy company easily the biggest hit of the year so far. A sequel is already in development for the 3-D animated film, digitally drawn to mimic a world composed entirely of Lego bricks. George Clooney's World War II caper "The Monuments Men" opened in second place with $22.7 million. Reviews have been weak for the based-on-a-true-story tale about the mission to retrieve artwork stolen by the Nazis. The Sony Pictures film was postponed from a Dec. 25 release.

Sliding to third was the cop comedy "Ride Along," with Kevin Hart and Ice Cube. After three straight weeks atop the box office, the Universal film earned $9.4 million.
