How To Convince Your Friends To Watch 'Parks & Recreation'

$

"Parks & Recreation" just celebrated 100 episodes. It's an impressive achievement for any television show, but even more so for the critically acclaimed NBC sitcom. Despite a passionate fanbase, the good folks in Pawnee seem to always be on the bubble for renewal. What "Parks & Recreation" really needs is more viewers.

As die-hard fans of the show, it's hard to fathom that everyone isn't laughing along with Amy Poehler and her cohorts. But that's where we can come in. As thanks for giving us 100 great episodes, we can do our part to give back by giving "Parks & Recreation" more viewers. It's all about spreading the word and convincing our friends and co-workers to give the show a try.

With its varied cast, "Parks & Recreation" seems to represent virtually every personality type out there. In other words, there's at least one character on the show who's probably a lot like your various friends. Just make the right connections with people and we can double this show's audience in no time. Simply find your friend's personality type in the list below and appeal to them based on the character they'll most relate to ... and ultimately fall in love with.

Is your friend a Type A personality, driven to succeed?
So is Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler). There is no one more passionate about her hometown than Leslie. Even when the people are voting to recall her, Leslie continues to fight for them. She fills her office with pictures of female political powerhouses, and she never gives up on her goals.

Is your friend a man's man, or attracted to intense masculinity?
So is Ron Swanson (Nick Offerman). In fact, Ron Swanson is one of the manliest men ever to appear on television. He eats almost exclusively meat, doesn't trust the government and creates hand-crafted wood furniture.

Is you friend compassionate and loyal; always there with a helping hand?
So is Ann Perkins (Rashida Jones). Through thick and thin, Ann has been the best of friends to Leslie, who isn't always the easiest person to get along with. Ann has been known to put everything aside at the drop of a dime to be there for her friends, whether it be with some tough love, or just to help elevate an important life moment to the stature it deserves.

Is your friend brilliant but socially awkward?
So is Ben Wyatt (Adam Scott). A child mayor, Ben has spent his entire life trying to make up for the failures of his ambitious youth. He's brilliant and compassionate, but sometimes he struggles in social situations, letting his inner geek get the best of him and weirding everyone out a bit.

Is your friend snarky, brooding and sarcastic?
So is April Ludgate (Aubrey Plaza). April has grown a lot over the years, finding things she actually cares about with her relationships. But she resists it with every fiber of her being. April loves her dark side, is quick with a cutting comment and remains determined to look like she doesn't care about anything.

Is your friend someone who believes in a healthy body and mind?
So is Chris Traeger (Rob Lowe). There is almost nothing in this world than can shake the smile off of Chris' face. He always has something positive and supportive to say. Chris treats his body like a temple and believes he can accomplish anything. Of course, he also believes everyone around him can accomplish anything, too. It's literally all about a positive attitude.

Is your friend a free-spirit, joyful and happy with his/her head often in the clouds?
So is Andy Dwyer (Chris Pratt). Easily one of the sweetest people on the show, Andy isn't the sharpest tool in the shed. But he's eager to please, and up for absolutely anything. In fact, his eternal optimism and joy in life was the only thing able to crack April's dark shell, leading to an unlikely-and-yet-perfect marriage.

Does your friend ooze with self-confidence, style, and an entrepreneurial spirit?
So does Tom Haverford (Aziz Ansari). While it took him a while, Tom finally came into his own as a business visionary with Rent-A-Swag. Obsessed with style, Tom thinks he's much cooler than he is. While his reach usually exceeds his grasp, he'll never stop believing it's finally going to happen.

Is your friend fabulous and confident, if a little private?
So is Donna Meagle (Retta). We know that Donna believes in "treating yo' self" to the finer things in life, and we know that she is a strong and confident woman, but she keeps most details of her personal life close to the vest. A woman of mystery, she has nevertheless proven to be a great ally and friend.

Is your friend clumsy and forgetful; prone to getting teased?
So is Jerry Gergich (Jim O'Heir). And yet, Jerry never lets all the teasing and put-downs get him down. He has a beautiful wife and family at home and he's learned not to rock the boat in life. In fact, his name isn't even Jerry. It's Gary. He just didn't want to correct everyone ... and now they call him Larry!

'Catching Fire' Is The Box Office Champ For 2013

Jennifer Lawrence is the queen of Hollywood. As Lionsgate announced on Friday, Lawrence's blockbuster "Hunger Games" film, "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," is now the number one release of 2013, with $409.4 million in ticket sales through Jan. 9. That put "Catching Fire" above "Iron Man 3," which earned $409 million after its release in May of 2013.

"The 'Hunger Game's franchise continues to evolve into a truly global phenomenon," Lionsgate Chief Executive Officer Jon Feltheimer said in a statement. "The success of 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire' is a testament to the vision of author Suzanne Collins, the sure hand of director Francis Lawrence, the brilliant performances of a remarkably talented cast led by the amazing Jennifer Lawrence and superb execution by our motion picture production, marketing and distribution teams. We will continue to grow the transformative 'Hunger Games' franchise in the years to come even as we continue to develop a dynamic portfolio of premium new brands."

In 2012, "The Hunger Games," the first film in the franchise, grossed $408 million, good for third place on that year's box-office chart.

"Catching Fire" winning 2013 is a significant achievement, as writer Mark Harris pointed out on Twitter. The film is the first female-led feature to top a year since "The Exorcist" in 1970. As BuzzFeed noted, other films with lead female roles have won the box office since then (including "Titanic," two "Harry Potter" films and "Avatar"), but all of those movies had major male co-stars. Lawrence is out in front of "The Hunger Games" as Katniss Everdeen, with Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth acting as supporting players.

Amy Poehler: 'SNL' Hiring Sasheer Zamata Is 'Awesome'

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — "Saturday Night Live" alumna Amy Poehler says her old show's hire of young comic Sasheer Zamata is awesome.

Zamata and two new writers were hired at NBC's longtime comedy show last week. All are black, with the show responding to criticism that it needed more diversity in its creative staff. Poehler takes particular pride. She's a co-founder of New York's Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, and says that Zamata was brought in as part of that improv group's own effort to promote diversity.

Poehler is preparing for Sunday's job co-hosting the Golden Globes with Tina Fey, which she said she's anticipating with a mixture of excitement and nervousness.

Sofia Vergara Slaps Jimmy Kimmel As They Read Internet Insults To Each Other

Jimmy Kimmel brought up a good point on his show Thursday night (Jan. 9), saying that Internet commenters can be incredibly rude. However, he may have gotten himself into trouble when he suggested that he and his guest, Sofia Vergara, should read comments that people had written about them aloud to one another.

Reading messages anonymous commenters had written online, the two lobbed insults at one another. It went fairly well at first, with feelings only mildly injured.

Then, one comment sent Vergara over the edge. Kimmel recited, "Sofia Vergara, has anyone checked for a penis?" to a very negative reception. Whether in anger or jest, the "Modern Family" actress immediately responded by slapping Kimmel across the face. She then stormed off stage, but not before turning to shout, "For sure bigger than yours!"

Vergara has most publicly faced criticism for her portrayal of Gloria Delgado on "Modern Family." Critics and minority groups alike have accused the actress of exploiting stereotypes of Latinos and women with her on–screen role.

And those who've already seen "Breaking Bad" may want to delve into the second half of the final season again: Season 5 is widely acclaimed, and many critics have called "Ozymandias," the third-to-last episode of "Breaking Bad," one of the greatest TV episodes of all time.

If you're still hungry for stories from the world of Walter White, the spinoff "Better Call Saul," which was commissioned last year, will arrive on Netflix some time after it airs on AMC.

What We Missed About The Nancy Kerrigan-Tonya Harding Scandal 20 Years Ago

$

When I was a little girl, I adored figure skating. The flawless sparkly outfits, the graceful artistry and athletic technicality of the movements, and most of all, the skaters themselves -- specifically, Nancy Kerrigan.

She was the perfect ice princess with her Vera Wang-designed costumes and her long, ballerina limbs, and she made every double axel and triple lutz she landed look easy. (Plus she had beautiful brown hair and her name was the same as my mother's, which to a girl under the age of 10 -- who also had brown hair -- made all the difference.) She was the symbol of a Cinderella comeback story. In 1994, just weeks before the winter Olympics, Kerrigan was attacked by an unknown assailant who would later be identified as a hitman hired by fellow skater Tonya Harding's husband Jeff Gillooly, and bodyguard Shawn Eckardt. Kerrigan recovered and won the silver medal.

I was not alone in my early-'90s love for Kerrigan. Even before January 6th, 1994, the figure skater's star was quickly rising. After she won a bronze medal at the 1992 Olympics, Kerrigan signed corporate sponsorship deals with companies like Campbell's Soup, Evian, Xerox and Reebok. Her classically feminine image easily secured her a spot as "darling of the U.S. skating community," as journalist Christine Brennan called her in a Jan. 1994 piece for The Washington Post. During the media spectacle that ensued after Kerrigan's attack -- who can forget the iconic video of her crying out "Why?" -- my 7-year-old mind picked up on the media's most basic narrative and took it at face value. Kerrigan was good, Harding was bad. The end.

2014-01-10-kerrigan.jpg
Tonya Harding at the 1992 Olympics, Nancy Kerrigan at the 1994 Olympics.

I never thought to question that story until this week, the 20th anniversary of the attack, when I saw Nanette Bernstein's documentary "The Price Of Gold," part of ESPN's 30 for 30 series. Of course, the basic facts of the story remain the same. It seems likely, though it was never proven, that Harding had some sort of knowledge about the attack, and no amount of mitigating circumstances ever excuses violence. However, the film (and Sarah Marshall's fabulous essay in The Believer) paint a picture in which Harding is a far more sympathetic character than the mainstream media would have had us believe. It turns out that frizzy blonde-haired Harding, child of a broken home, who grew up in poverty making her own skating costumes was the skating world's perfect villain.

"The way things were painted was this very black-and-white thing," Burnstein told the audience at the Jan. 9 New York premiere of "The Price Of Gold." "[It was] the evil witch vs. the snow queen."

The Tonya Harding-Nancy Kerrigan story played out like a Lifetime movie, and members of both the print and broadcast media ate it up like tabloid candy. It had a catfight element that we love so much, and a class-war theme (even though Kerrigan also came from a working-class family): "The Reigning Ice Princess Taken Down By The White-Trash Wannabe." Connie Chung, who was dispatched to the Olympics on behalf of CBS to cover the story, told the audience at the ESPN film screening that, in her opinion, this story set the pendulum of the news industry swinging in the wrong direction. "The feeding frenzy began to take hold," she said. "It became entertainment. CBS was salivating over this Tonya Harding-Nancy Kerrigan story."

Marshall describes the media's image of Harding thusly and the reluctance of anyone to really question the dominant narrative of Harding's guilt:

She was trash: trash cheats. Trash wants reward without working. Trash is dangerous. Trash doesn't care about other people's dreams. Why question a story that made such easy sense, and provided so much to laugh at along the way?

But quite a few things were lost when we branded Harding as trash and threw her out with it. (She was banned by the U.S. Figure Skating Association for life after she pled guilty to hindering the prosecution in their investigation of the attack against Kerrigan.) Although I remember plenty of discussions about Harding and her bodyguard, I barely remembered hearing about her (by most accounts abusive) husband Jeff -- the one to implicate Harding in planning the attack in the first place, and the one whose version of events was widely-accepted by the American public. We also missed out on a critical examination of the ways in which certain odds were truly stacked against Harding due to her socioeconomic position, her looks and the powerful and athletic nature of her skating.

What I find most fascinating reflecting on the story two decades later -- and the way that my young-girl-self consumed it -- is the way that I so easily absorbed the skating world's definition of being a good woman. From age 7 I knew that I, too, should aim to be graceful, demure, well-dressed, upwardly-mobile, beautiful and feminine; all of the things that the media and the U.S. Skating Association wanted Kerrigan to embody. (Though, even she briefly fell from grace after griping about Oksana Baiul -- proof that no one is shielded from the wrath of the skating world.)

I will always be a Nancy Kerrigan fan, but 20 years later, I can appreciate Harding's talent as well, and I can look at the media frenzy that surrounded these two women with a newly-critical eye.

Harding now lives with her husband and young son in central Oregon. You can hear the deep hurt and bitterness in her voice as she talks to Burstein in "The Price Of Gold" about the fallout she experienced from the scandal and the perceived injustices she experienced. Kerrigan will be a figure-skating analyst for NBC during the 2014 Olympics.

"In all likelihood [Harding] was involved and she obviously has created her own fiction," said Burstein at her film's premiere. "But to never be accepted for who you are in a sport because you couldn't grow out your bangs? I did have empathy for her." Guilty or not, Harding has probably been punished enough.

Jesse Plemons Reportedly Up For 'Star Wars' Role

Landry may get a lightsaber. According to a report from Jeff Sneider of TheWrap, Jesse Plemons, he of "Friday Night Lights" and "Breaking Bad" fame, is meeting with J.J. Abrams in the very near future to discuss the lead role in "Star Wars: Episode VII."

Per Sneider, Plemons has already filmed an audition for "Star Wars," which puts the 25-year-old star in league with many other young actors, including Michael B. Jordan and Saoirse Ronan. As yet, no one has been cast in "Episode VII," which is scheduled for release on Dec. 18, 2015. Speculation is that original stars Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill will return for the seventh installment in the beloved franchise.

HuffPost Entertainment contacted representatives for Plemons and Lucasfilm, the company behind "Star Wars," for comment on the casting report. This post will be updated if and when they respond.

Plemons' possible involvement is just the latest "Star Wars" rumor to hit the internet. Back in September of 2013, Benedict Cumberbatch was connected to "Episode VII," but his reps shot down the speculation as fictitious. Cumberbatch, for his part, wasn't as certain.

"I don't know. Who knows, who knows? Nothing is known of that," Cumberbatch said when the "Star Wars" rumor was broached by The Hollywood Reporter's Stephen Galloway in September of 2013. "I worked with J.J. [Abrams]. Obviously, he knows. Everyone who wants to be part of that film, they know about."

"12 Years A Slave" star Chiwetel Ejiofor has also been linked to "Star Wars," though simply because he took a meeting with Abrams at the end of last year.

No word yet on what role Plemons would play in "Episode VII," but head to TheWrap to check out that site's speculation.

In Defense of Being Mary Jane and Flawed Fictional Black Women

When I first heard BET had a new show about a 30-something professional black woman struggling to keep her personal life intact, I'll admit I was underwhelmed. Another emotionally suppressed black woman barely staying afloat as she juggles work, family, friends and love. Yay. But after watching the two-hour movie special and Tuesday's premiere episode of Being Mary Jane, I, like many of you, am hooked.

The racy BET drama, made for us and by us, tells the story of Mary Jane Paul, a successful, single news anchor with a sick shoe game and a penchant for no-good men. Oh, and she has a lot of sex. While the majority of the country, #BlackTwitter in particular, gave the show two thumbs up, not everyone is loving MJ.

In what's become standard protocol with hyped black primetime shows (the handful that exist), the show's come under scrutiny for what some critics are calling an inadequate depiction of powerful black women. In a recent Black Enterprise article, writer Janell Hazlewood argues that BMJ and similar shows "add to that age-old stereotype that black women in general are objects not of a man's highest devotion and respect, but only worthy of lust and love's table scraps."

I get it. I promise I do. As black women we've been the stoic, lonely, hypersexualized, ghettoized, hand-cemented-to-the-hip sistah-girl for decades, so of course we have to be mindful of how we are portrayed on a national platform. But where does it stop? When does the obsession with putting our best foot forward deter us from telling the good, the bad and the everything of life? If we spent all our time attempting to right the wrongs of history with each black female lead that came across our screen, heroines like Olivia Pope and Mary Jane wouldn't even be a thought on the cutting room floor. Nola Darling or Foxy Brown? Forget about it.

While it's never morally entertaining to see a woman carry on an affair with a married man or get peeved when her booty call has another side chick, there's something to be said for an unapologetic look at a flawed protagonist whose interior drastically conflicts with the perfectly manicured exterior. It's relatable, obsessively entertaining, and necessary for black women longing to unleash their vulnerability. Olivia Pope is far from perfect, and that's why we love her. She can rendezvous with the president, stop a terrorist attack, and cry on the bedroom floor all in the span of a few minutes. Whether it's Liv, Mary Jane or any other not-quite-perfect brown-skinned woman on TV, despite their imperfections, they still manage to be pretty bad chicks -- that's the big takeaway, and it's something we as black women have mastered.

Maybe we're all not having steamy shower-cap sex in the gym locker room with a taken man, but darn it, we all have our issues. And personally I don't mind seeing those issues played out against a well-crafted fictional backdrop complete with eye candy and a great soundtrack.

Yes, Clair Huxtable will always be the epitome of a professional, put-together, I'm-every-woman black female lead, but I like to think that prior to meeting Cliff, Clair lived a pretty happening single life and even made a few mistakes along the way. (That's a show I'd definitely be DVRing.)

It also goes without saying that Mara Brock Akil is a rock star with the pen and has proven time and time again that she knows how to tell a good story about black women. So relax, folks. We're in good hands. There's a fine line between honest depictions and exploitation, and this is far from the latter. Besides, it could be worse. I Love New York, anyone?

The Champagne Cocktail They'll Be Drinking at The Golden Globes

$

The Golden Globes are always fun to watch (and attend, no doubt), due in no small part to the relaxed nature of the presentation: unlike the formality of the Academy Awards, attendees of the Golden Globes relax at dining tables at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, jawing with their neighbors and enjoying the cuisine and the open bar. This year's ceremony looks to be even more festive with the introduction of the first official Golden Globes cocktail, as I found out firsthand when I attended the food and drink media preview at the historic Beverly Hilton, longtime home to the Golden Globes, on January 3.

Moët & Chandon has been serving up champagne at the Golden Globes for 23 years, but only this year did they finally decide to serve up a champagne cocktail, christened the Moët Golden Night. Created by Chef Aida Mollenkamp, who was at the preview to share details about the new cocktail, the Moët Golden Night is an sophisticated, unpredictable medley of Moët Impérial, cardamom simple syrup, and pear brandy. I tasted the cocktail, which was delicious, even at 10:30am. Though on the sweet side, it's also well-balanced, and is a gorgeous golden color befitting the event it was created for.

I shared my surprise with Mollenkamp that it took so long for Moët to create a cocktail for the Globes when they've been the official champagne of the glittery event for over two decades. She explained, "It took some time. We didn't want to create an ordinary champagne cocktail. We wanted something unique and seasonal."

The drink is served in a white wine glass, rather than a champagne flute or coupe, but Mollenkamp said that the glass she chose serves to allow the flavors of pear and cardamom to develop while enhancing the effervescence of the champagne:

"I created this cocktail to taste delicious on its own or with any of the courses that'll be served at the Golden Globes. Its flavor profile will pair as well with the mango dessert as it will with the entrées. We hope people will make this cocktail themselves at home while watching the Golden Globes to make their viewing parties that much more festive."

Here's the recipe, which will yield enough for 6 cocktails, with a bit of simple syrup left over.

Moët Golden Night

Ingredients:

1/4 cup unrefined granulated sugar
1/4 cup water
20 whole cardamom pods, crushed using the back of a knife or a mortar and pestle
1/4 cup pear brandy
1 (750 ml) chilled Moët & Chandon Imperial Brut Champagne
2 small ripe Forelle or Seckel pears, for garnish

Instructions:

Combine sugar and water in a small saucepan, stir to dissolve the sugar, add the crushed cardamom pods and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Simmer the simple syrup for 5 minutes, then remove from heat and allow to steep and cool for 20 minutes.

Using a fine mesh strainer, strain the simple syrup, discard the seeds and pods, and place the simple syrup into a liquid measuring cup. Add the pear brandy and stir to combine. (The pear-cardamom simple syrup mixture can be made up to 2 days ahead and the Asian pears can be peeled up to 2 hours ahead.)

Just before serving, cut the pear off the core and slice pear lengthwise into 1/8-inch thick slices. (Separate slices into stacks of three and spread slightly to make a fan. If cutting slices ahead of serving time, coat them with a little lemon juice to prevent them from browning.)

To serve, add 1/2 ounce of the pear-cardamom simple syrup mixture to 6 white wine glasses or 6 Champagne coupes (this makes enough syrup for 8 cocktails). Add 4 ounces of chilled Moët & Chandon Imperial Brut Champagne to each glass, filling each glass about halfway. Garnish each glass with three pieces of fanned pear slices and serve.

'Girls' Star Adam Driver Gets His Own 'Star Wars' Rumor

Back in November of last year, it was rumored that "Girls" star Adam Driver was in contention to play Nightwing in the upcoming "Man of Steel" sequel. (Nightwing is better known as Dick Grayson, Batman's estranged former sidekick.)

"No, there's no truth to it," Driver told HuffPost Entertainment a week after the initial story broke. "I don't know whoever put it on there. I don't know how these things get [started] -- I don't know how it first came about."

Now, Driver has another rumor to deal with. According to The Hollywood Reporter's Borys Kit, Driver "is being eyed for a role" in "Star Wars: Episode VII." That tidbit, however, was denied by Latino Review via Twitter:

Despite that claim, TheWrap's Jeff Sneider, who first broke the news of Driver's possible involvement in the Batman vs. Superman film, acknowledged that "Star Wars" producers did have some interest in the 30-year-old star.

“I'm definitely trying to figure this all out as I go along, how to craft a career," Driver told The New York Times in an interview last November. "As things get bigger, I have days of depression, sitting in the house and wondering 'What are you doing? Is it even relevant?' [...] I'm not against Hollywood at all. I just want to be involved with good writing and work that has some kind of meaning."

About that writing, at least with regard to "Star Wars: Episode VII": According to THR, director J.J. Abrams and co-writer Lawrence Kasdan have "significantly" changed the initial "Star Wars" script that Michael Arndt wrote in an effort to put more focus on the franchise's original characters, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia. (It's expected that Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher will all reprise their respective roles from the initial trilogy for "Episode VII," but nothing has been confirmed just yet.)

HuffPost Entertainment contacted representatives for Driver via email. This post will be updated if and when they respond.

For much more on "Star Wars," including which other stars are being discussed for roles, head to THR.

'Lone Survivor' Box Office Impresses, Debuting At No. 1

By Ronald Grover and Chris Michaud
LOS ANGELES/NEW YORK, Jan 12 (Reuters) - "Lone Survivor," the true story of a failed U.S. Navy SEALS mission to capture or kill a Taliban leader in Afghanistan, collected $38.5 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales, topping movie "Frozen" to win the weekend box office race.
The film stars Mark Wahlberg as Marcus Luttrell, the only one of four SEALS to return from the mission and who wrote the 2007 book on which the movie is based.
"Frozen," a Walt Disney Co animated film and last week's box office winner, was second with ticket sales of $15.1 million from Friday through Sunday, according to estimates from Rentrak.
"The Wolf of Wall Street," a tale of greed starring Leonardo DiCaprio, was third with $9 million, while this week's other new major release, "The Legend of Hercules," starring fashion model and actor Kellan Lutz, was just behind, selling $8.6 million in tickets.
"Hercules" was tied for fourth place with "American Hustle," an awards-season favorite directed by David O. Russell and starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper.
"Lone Survivor," directed and written by "Friday Nights Lights" director Peter Berg, was the subject of a Hollywood bidding war in 2007 won by Comcast Corp's Universal Pictures. The movie cost $40 million to make, Universal said.
The heavily marketed film far exceeded industry projections of about $23 million in domestic sales, including theaters in the United States and Canada. It was the second biggest January opening weekend ever, behind only "Cloverfield," which made $40 million, according to Rentrak.
"You can't make predictions on films like this," said Nikki Rocco, Universal's president for domestic distribution, adding "You just don't know how the public is going to embrace it."
But decent reviews along with what Rocco called "a grassroots campaign to tell Americans that this is a story of patriotism and heroism, and you're going to want to be a part of the water cooler conversation about it on Monday," sent its box office sales soaring.
The film received a 73 rating from aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences gave the film an A+ grade, according to CinemaScore, which measures ticket buyer reactions.
"The Legend of Hercules," which was forecast to have ticket sales of $8 million, is the first of two films based on the son of the Greek god Zeus. The second "Hercules" stars professional wrestler Dwayne Johnson, also known as "The Rock," and is scheduled for release on July 25.
"The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" was sixth with $8 million in ticket sales. After leading the domestic box office during the last three weeks of 2013, the movie, the second of a three-part adaption of J.R.R. Tolkien's 1937 novel, has hauled in $242 million domestically and $809 million globally.
Viacom Inc's Paramount Pictures released "Wolf of Wall Street." Warner Bros, a unit of Time Warner Inc, released "The Hobbit." Sony Corp's movie studio distributed "American Hustle."

Pharrell's 'Happy' Bumps Pitbull and Ke$ha From UK Charts Top Spot

LONDON, Jan 12 (Reuters) - Pharrell Williams and his song "Happy" reclaimed the number one spot in the British music singles chart on Sunday, knocking "Timber" by fellow Americans Pitbull and Ke$ha into second place, the Official Charts Company said.
Happy sold over 107,000 copies to occupy the top spot for a second non-consecutive week, having been dethroned by Timber the previous week. Pharrell Williams had scored the two biggest-selling singles of 2013.
Among the fastest climbers in the singles chart was Beyonce, whose "Drunk In Love", a collaboration with her husband Jay Z, jumped 17 places to take the number 10 spot. It was Beyonce's 16th top 10 hit in Britain.
British singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding held onto the number one spot in the official albums chart for a second week with "Halcyon", keeping Beyonce's self-titled album at bay in second place.
Goulding, who performed at the wedding reception of Prince William and Kate Middleton in 2011, was enjoying a good week after she was nominated on Thursday for three BRITs, the top music awards in Britain. (Reporting by Estelle Shirbon; editing by Andrew Roche)

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Sheriff's deputies are investigating Justin Bieber for yet another dispute with a neighbor that could land him in court.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore says Bieber has been named as a suspect in a misdemeanor vandalism and assault crime report for allegedly throwing eggs at a neighbor's home in their gated Calabasas neighborhood Thursday evening. The 19-year-old pop star allegedly egged the house while his neighbor and neighbor's daughter were on the balcony. They videotaped the incident, Whitmore says.

Whitmore says Bieber won't speak to deputies. Depending on the damage estimate, a charge could rise to a felony.

In October, prosecutors declined to charge Bieber after a neighbor complained he drove recklessly through the area.

Messages left for Bieber's representative, Melissa Victor, weren't immediately returned Sunday morning.

It's almost a prerequisite these days: Undergo a major transformation for a movie role, and Hollywood is likely to pay attention. At least, that's historically been the case for Charlize Theron, Christian Bale, Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway, all of whom shed, sheared and shocked with their dramatically changed appearances for award-winning roles in the past.

In this spirit, we point to this year's crop of Golden Globe nominees, mostly men, who have undergone serious onscreen transformations, from Jared Leto to Jennifer Lawrence.

Bad news for Hollywood's brightest stars: hours before Sunday's Golden Globes ceremony, a pipe burst outside the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif., flooding a portion of the red carpet.

"A pipe has appeared to totally bust and there is water gushing, literally everywhere in the position of where all of the international press -– everyone has moved out of the way," Catt Sadler on the E! network during the red carpet pre-show (via THR).

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association released a statement about the incident, noting a faulty sprinkler caused the issue (via Marlow Stern):

"We can confirm that there was a malfunction with a sprinkler near the red carpet. The situation was quickly resolved. Despite the incident the red carpet will open at its regularly scheduled time. As some of the biggest names in entertainment are scheduled to attend the Golden Globe Awards tonight, we wanted to give the carpet one last wash before it opened."

E! red carpet host Ryan Seacrest tweeted photos of the flood from his personal Twitter account:

NBC Los Angeles photographer Sean Browning tweeted this photo of the sprinkler break:
