The Rock Becomes A Serious Actor

$

0

LOS ANGELES — Although it sometimes accompanies fine films such as "Zero Dark Thirty" and "Argo," the phrase "inspired by a true story" tacked onto the front of a movie too often warns you that you're about to see something "inspiring" in the most hackneyed, triumph-of-the-human-spirit sort of way.

What's surprising about "Snitch" is that, rather than taking the reductive path of offering innocuous emotional uplift or one-man-army action, it generates a feeling of real desperation and fear as it shows a man getting in way over his head when he takes on some very bad guys. In other words, this is a pretty good film starring an actor named Dwayne Johnson, not a commodity with The Rock as a hood ornament.

Summit's main commercial hopes still rest with the mainstream action crowd – which likely will be satisfied despite the film's refusal to dish out doses of bodily harm like clockwork – but for Johnson, this could broaden the perception of the sorts of roles he can play as he pushes into his 40s.

Directed with intensity by longtime stuntman Ric Roman Waugh ("Felon"), "Snitch" takes its dramatic opportunities seriously and not just as an excuse for brutal confrontations between drug dealers and assorted thugs. The "inspiring" part lies in the fact that a father, John Matthews (Johnson), is willing to go to the absolute limit to prevent his teenage son Jason (Rafi Gavron) from serving 10 years in prison under mandatory-sentencing laws for having made one stupid mistake. The involving part is how he goes about it: getting entangled with some very unsavory characters while trying to preserve a vestige of his morality and remain alive.

Inspired by a "Frontline" report about an aspect of the law that allows for reduced time in exchange for informing on drug dealers, the script by Justin Haythe ("Revolutionary Road," "The Clearing") and Waugh follows a familiar-feeling template but goes deep enough with character detail and legal issues to set it apart from standard-issue drug- and crime-related films. Jason gets sent away for ill-advisedly accepting delivery of a box full of Ecstasy as a sort-of favor for a friend and also in order to try it with his girlfriend.

Unwilling to rat his buddy out, the terrified, physically unprepossessing Jason is tossed into the pen, where he'll be as defenseless as a rabbit in a foxhole. His resentful mother (Melina Kanakaredes) lashes out at John, her ex, while the only solution offered by politically hungry U.S. Attorney Joanne Keeghan (Susan Sarandon) is for Jason to offer evidence against some other drug dealer, but he truly doesn't have any.

The biggest dramatic leap the film imposes is that John, a straight-arrow guy who runs a shipping company but suffers guilt over having been a deficient dad post-divorce, would conceive of and then persuade the attorney to accept a plan under which he himself would deliver drug dealers to her in exchange for his son's freedom. Keeghan expresses the same dubiousness the audience might feel, but once John gets the green light, you can feel the sweat and inner turmoil begin to simmer, as he's no better-suited than Homer Simpson to figure out how to go about this. John's formidable physique and straight-shooter personality might serve him well in most situations, but they have little bearing given his new challenges.

Reluctantly, John leans on one of his employees who has done time, Daniel Cruz (Jon Bernthal), to point him in the right direction – a wrenching decision in that the man, who has a son of his own, is trying to stay straight. But John finally gets entree to dealer Malik (a terrific Michael Kenneth Williams), a two-time loser who, after some tense testing, agrees to use him on an out-of-state drug run.

The first big action scene doesn't arrive until an hour in, at which point the stakes grow much higher with the involvement of a U.S. branch of a Mexican drug cartel run by the cool Juan Carlos (Benjamin Bratt). With her congressional race heating up, the idea of bringing down such a big dog excites Keeghan to no end but puts John and Daniel in untenable positions, leading to some tough choices for both men. The danger they face feels real, as does their angst over moral compromises, and the film climaxes in a well-staged chase involving John's 18-wheel big rig that presumably draws upon the director's stunt experience in achieving such old-school, real-deal power.

Unusual for this sort of thing, "Snitch" is a film after which you remember the characters and actors more than the big action moments. Never removing his shirt, Johnson behaves within a narrow range but is engagingly distressed and stalwart in equal measure, conveying sufficient feeling and subtext to suggest the actor could be entrusted with greater dramatic challenges in the future. Bernthal ("The Walking Dead") strongly puts over a conflicted man pushed into a terribly precarious position, and Barry Pepper keeps you guessing as a hipster-looking undercover cop. Sarandon's ambitious crime-buster remains unfortunately one-dimensional.

Waugh and sharp-eyed cinematographer Dana Gonzales keep their framing quite tight, which amplifies the actors' work but, more ambiguously, keeps you worried about what might be going on outside the field of view. A very large contribution is made by Brazilian composer Antonio Pinto ("City of God," "Senna," "Get the Gringo"), whose eerie, ever-hovering electronic score gathers cumulative force to greatly amplify the story's power.

"Snitch," a Lionsgate/Summit release, is rated PG-13 for drug content and sequences of violence. 112 minutes.

After last week's "Vampire Diaries," it's hard to imagine Elena (Nina Dobrev) will be OK.

[SPOILER ALERT: Do not read on if you have not yet seen Season 4, Episode 14 of The CW's "The Vampire Diaries," titled "Down the Rabbit Hole."]

Silas drained Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) of his blood and the last audiences saw of him, he was motionless on the ground. Based on the promo for this week's episode, "Stand by Me" (Thursday, February 21 at 8 p.m. EST on The CW), it's pretty clear Elena is suffering from an extreme case of denial.

"She couldn't protect Jeremy and lost the only family member she had left," Dobrev told Entertainment Tonight. "She won't take it lightly. It's going to destroy her." But, the actress added, "It was very important that she lose Jeremy for what she's about to go through. It becomes a big part of her journey."

Meredith Fell (Torrey DeVitto) also returns in "Stand By Me" and meets Elena's wrath when asking her to turn over Jeremy's body means acknowledging the fact that her brother, her last remaining immediate family member, is dead.

"Losing Jeremy really, really, really changes Elena. Sometimes people recover from tragedy and sometimes they don't -- but it's a long journey for her," Dobrev explained to ET. "Elena's mourning peroid is much different than any I've ever seen depicted on TV before. She goes off the deep end and spirals downwards into a black hole of death and sadness and misery ... It's an Elena we haven't seen before, and you'll be shocked, quite frankly ... It's almost like she's a completely different person that you won't recognize to some degree."

Elena's not the only "Vampire Diaries" character who can't imagine life without Jeremy. Check out this sneak peek below of Bonnie (Kat Graham) finding out from Professor Shane (David Alpay) that Silas drained Jeremy of his blood.

But because their worlds are crumbling, "everyone comes together in this episode," Candice Accola, who plays Caroline, told TV Guide. "Whereas everyone is usually plotting together for evil, this time everyone is plotting together for good. There are some really beautiful moments."

As for the Caroline, Tyler and Klaus storyline -- in the wake of Klaus forcing Tyler to choose between death and running away -- Accola explained, "By no means was this a breakup for her. She's got a lot of hope in her and that's her new thing: figuring out how to have Klaus calm down and have Tyler come back. She's being very optimistic ...I feel like it's that first true love and right now it's very strong and unbreakable. Who knows as the characters grow up and grow older? But right now I don't see her being like, 'I'm going to ... get on OK Cupid and see what else is out there.'"

Check out The CW's official episode description for "Stand By Me" below:

THE TERRIBLE TRUTH - When Stefan (Paul Wesley) arrives back in Mystic Falls with Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen), Caroline (Candice Accola) is immediately worried about Elena's state of mind. Stefan reaches out to Dr. Fell (guest star Torrey DeVitto) and Matt (Zach Roerig) for help. Still on the island, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) relays somber news to Rebekah (Claire Holt), and is surprised at her reaction. Together, Damon and Rebekah learn an unexpected bit of recent history from Vaughn (guest star Charlie Bewley). Everyone is horrified when Bonnie (Kat Graham) reveals the rest of Shane's (guest star David Alpay) plan. Finally, after Damon does his best to help her, Elena comes up with a plan of her own.

"The Vampire Diaries" airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.

Why Was This Julia Louis-Dreyfus Commercial Pulled?

$

This Julia Louis-Dreyfus commercial is causing a lot of problems.

The spot for Israel's satellite television provider Yes features the "Veep" actress accidentally calling her overweight coworker (who's seen eating chips in an elevator) pregnant, rubbing her stomach in excitement and presuming it's a girl.

In the Louis-Dreyfus commercial, which you can watch above, the actress lies about having eye surgery, calls another coworker by the wrong name and pins the pregnant "rumor" on a non-English-speaking cleaning woman before finally apologizing.

"I would like to apologize to Betty for thinking that she was pregnant," Louis-Dreyfus says in the commercial. "Obviously, she hasn't dated anyone forever and uh, yeah, you need a man to ... uh ... so, um ... I'm sorry!"

Yes, which holds broadcast rights to HBO shows including "Veep," pulled the Louis-Dreyfus commercial from airwaves and from its YouTube account, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The McCann Erickson-produced commercial led to a formal complaint from Israel's Yedid Association for Community Empowerment, which read (via THR): "There are a lot of weight-challenged individuals in Israel who are treated in an irreverent and hurtful manner. There is no justification to illustrate a stigma which suggests a larger woman is either pregnant or simply too fat for anyone to consider going out with."

In a statement, Yes apologized and claimed, according to The Jerusalem Post, that "this is a humorous advert based on the style for which the actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus is known. The message of the advert is how to deal with mistakes, and if there is someone presented in a ridiculous light, then it is Julia -- who makes the mistake [in the advert]. There was never any intention to upset the public in any way, and if someone feels personally offended, we apologize for that."

Yes has previously aired HBO promotional spots featuring "Boardwalk Empire" star Steve Buscemi and TV mob boss James Gandolfini of "The Sopranos." Watch the latter below:

Robbie Amell could be joining his cousin on The CW.

The actor, whose cousin is "Arrow" star Stephen Amell, has landed the lead role on the teen-centric network's "Tomorrow People" pilot, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The "Revenge" alum will coincidentally play a young man named Stephen, who just wants to be normal and is relieved to learn he's part of the Tomorrow People ("who represent the next stage in human evolution") ... instead of just crazy, THR reports. He possesses the gifts of telepathy, telekinesis, teleportation and stopping time.

"Sleepy Hollow" has found its leading lady. Nicole Beharie has been tapped to star in the drama pilot as Abbie Archer, a detective who's set to leave Sleepy Hollow for the FBI Academy, but "her troubling past causes her to doubt her perceptive abilities, and she's horrified as she witnesses the gory slaying of her partner and mentor, Sheriff August Grey." [THR]

Joey McIntyre could join Donnie Wahlberg on CBS. The New Kid On The Block has been cast in "The McCarthys" as Gerard McCarthy, unhappily the shortest one in his sports-crazed family. Jessica Chaffin also joins the cast as his sister Jackie, "who swings wildly from overconfidence to insecurity, and is completely unaware that she’s her mother’s (Jacki Weaver) least favorite." Two more actors are getting "Reckless." The ABC drama centers around a reserved engineer called David who will stop at nothing to rescue his wife after she disappears in the midst of a military coup in East Myanmar. Lou Taylor Pucci will play Ryan Harrison, "a twentysomething family screw-up" who lacks motivation. Ashton Holmes has been cast as Wyatt Bickford, a college acquaintance of David's who represents a private security contractor. [The Hollywood Reporter]

"Home Alone" star to play Christina Ricci's on-screen father. Daniel Stern will play Ricci's father in NBC's "Girlfriend in a Coma," about a woman who wakes up after a 17-year coma to find that she has a daughter from a pregnancy she wasn't aware of when she had her accident. His character is described as a "warm, salt-of-the-earth electrician." [THR}

ABC has cast "Kings" star Chris Egan in its modern horror pilot "Gothica," according to The Hollywood Reporter. Egan will play the iconic Dorian Gray, the literary creation of Oscar Wilde who was the focus of the 1890 novel "The Picture of Dorian Gray."

"Gothica" is being described as "a sexy, gothic soap set in the present day that weaves together a mythology that incorporates the legends of Dracula, Jekyll and Hyde, Frankenstein and Dorian Gray, among others." Egan's character is described as "a beautifully charming and devastatingly sexy man with a smile like a switchblade. He's an enigmatic playboy who develops a relationship with Grace Van Helsing and attempts to help her figure out who killed her family."

The high-concept ABC pilot has also cast British "Eastenders" star Tom Ellis as Victor Frankenstein, "a brilliant doctor who's trying to find a way to bring his late daughter, Anna, back to life." Although the character is married to Madeline Usher, THR reports that he, too, has a past with Grace Van Helsing and is in love with her. Ellis was recently rumored to be on the shortlist to join "Downton Abbey" for a major role involving Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery).

The ABC pilot is not to be confused with Showtime's straight-to-series show "Penny Dreadful," which will bring together literary horror characters including Dracula, Dr. Frankenstein and Dorian Gray in turn-of-the-century Victorian London.

In other pilot news ...

"Boardwalk Empire" alum gets "Ordained" by CBS. Charlie Cox will star as the son of a powerful, Kennedy-esque political family who leaves the priesthood and becomes a lawyer to stop his sister (a politician) from being assassinated. [TVLine]

"Argo" actress joins "Beverly Hills Cop" adaptation. Sheila Vand will play Leila, a formerly privileged Beverly Hills detective who gave up riches for independence. She'll butt heads with Brandon T. Jackson's lead character, Aaron, the son of Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy), when he refuses to play by the rules. [THR]

"The Wire's" Isaiah Whitlock Jr. is one of ABC's "Lucky 7." The pilot revolves around seven employees of a Queens gas station whose lives are changed when their lottery syndicate wins the jackpot. Whitlock will play Bob Harris, the manager of the station. [Deadline]

The CW casts two actors in "The Hundred." The pilot is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi story about a ship of 100 teenage delinquents who are sent back to Earth 97 years after a nuclear war to try and recolonize the planet. Australian Bob Morley will play Bellamy, the oldest of the group, and "Emily Owens M.D." alum Eli Goree will play Wells Jaha, who is unpopular with the other kids because his father is the chancellor of the space station full of Earth's remaining survivors. LOOK: Baby Recreates 2013 Best Picture Nominees

Oscar nominee "Django Unchained" has been called "ferociously profane" and "disturbing," but the movie has certainly never been considered "cute." Until now, that is. A shot of 2-and-a-half-year-old Sophia Storino posed as Quentin Tarantino is so adorable that it's easy to forget this is a film filled with the actor/writer/director's trademark profanity and gore.

The image was made by mom of two Maggie Storino for her Tumblr "Don't Call Me Oscar" which went live last year with parody stills from all the best picture nominees. Now, Maggie is back with the 2013 versions, starring Sophia, Sophia's 1-year-old little sister Sadie, and their 2-year-old friend Hudson. The results are delightful -- even if you have no idea what any of the films are about because you haven't been to the movies since you had kids yourself. (Not that we know anything about that.)

Jane Lynch To Host Hollywood Game Show For NBC

Is Jane Lynch the next Bob Barker? According to The Hollywood Reporter, the "Glee" star has been tapped by NBC to host "Hollywood Game Night," a competition show hailing from "Will and Grace" star Sean Hayes and producing partner Todd Milliner.

The concept will reportedly feature "A-list celebrities hanging out and playing games with non-celebrity contestants in a cocktail party atmosphere," and though no star players have yet been announced, NBC told THR that well-known figures from film, TV, sports and politics would likely be involved.

“With Jane Lynch on board as our host, we now have a key component in place that will further enliven the sheer fun of a raucous Hollywood party that will include real everyday people,” Paul Telegdy, president of alternative and late night programming at NBC, said in a statement. “Her exuberant wit and ability to think quickly will be the perfect match for our show which will give viewers a fresh look inside the off-set lives of their favorite celebrities -- and allow them a chance to win money as well.”

Lynch added, "I'm so thrilled to let the world in on the fun with Sean at Game Night! The format is sure to provide a lot of unexpected results that will keep everyone off-balance and entertained.”

The game show has been given an eight episode order, and is said to be based on Hayes' own real-life game nights.

This week's Family Dinner Table Talk, from HuffPost and The Family Dinner book:

You might think anyone who’s made it into a major movie – as an actor, director, producer, costume designer or in any other role – has reached the very top of his or her field. But even among the most successful movie-makers, there are awards for the best.

This Sunday night, some of Hollywood's most famous figures will gather in Los Angeles for the 85th Academy Awards -- nicknamed "Oscars" -- where some of them will receive awards for their work in movies over the past year.

The first Oscars ceremony happened in 1929; starting in 1953, the awards were broadcast on TV. Countless great actors and actresses (from Katharine Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor to Clark Gable and Laurence Olivier) have won honors over the years -- but there are many legendary performers who haven’t, too.

Tonight, let’s talk about our favorite movies from the past year -- and what makes a truly great movie performance.

Questions for discussion:
What was your family’s favorite movie this year?
Which of the awards would you most like to win yourself?
For mom and dad: What were your favorite movies growing up?

In her cookbook, The Family Dinner, Laurie David talks about the importance of families making a ritual of sitting down to dinner together, and how family dinners offer a great opportunity for meaningful discussions about the day's news. "Dinner," she says, "is as much about digestible conversation as it is about delicious food."

We couldn't agree more. So HuffPost has joined with Laurie and every Friday afternoon, just in time for dinner, our editors highlight one of the most compelling news stories of the week -- stories that will spark a lively discussion among the whole family.

Judge Approves Of The New 'Jacksun!'

LOS ANGELES — Jermaine Jackson has a new, brighter surname – Jacksun.

A Los Angeles judge approved the change to singer's name Friday.

The 58-year-old, who shared lead singing duties with his younger brother Michael in the Jackson 5, did not appear in court.

He sought the name change for "artistic reasons" and says it has nothing to do with a recent rift in his family over the care of Michael Jackson's children and family matriarch Katherine Jackson.

His attorney Bret D. Lewis says Jacksun is in Europe performing with his brothers and told him that he was sure it was "a sunny day in California."

Lewis says he doesn't know whether Jacksun will elaborate on the creative reasons for the change.

"Inside The Actor's Studio" host James Lipton will be reprising his role as Warden Stefan Gentles in the highly-anticipated Netflix season of "Arrested Development." Friday on HuffPost Live, he heaped praise on the beloved comedy and said the reunion was a joyous experience.

"It is as brilliant and funny ... as ever. They're an extraordinary bunch. And we had a wonderful time reuniting. There we were in the makeup room and suddenly, we were alive again. It was heaven. It's a great show," Lipton beamed.

Lipton also described the extreme lengths that "Arrested" producers went to ensure none of the script for the new season would leak. "When they sent me the script, they wouldn't email it to me. They got it somehow to New York from Los Angeles, and then it was delivered to me by hand," he revealed.

Lipton joins an impressive roster of guest stars that will appear on the fourth season of "Arrested Development." Kristen Wiig, who signed on to play a young Lucille Bluth, was the most recent addition to the cast.

"Arrested Development" Season 4 premieres in May on Netflix.

Is Maks Finally Leaving 'Dancing With The Stars'?

Is Maks Chmerkovskiy officially leaving "Dancing with the Stars"? TMZ says yes.

Sources close to production reportedly told TMZ that Chmerkovskiy met with producers earlier this week to inform them that he wouldn't return for the next season of ABC's reality hit.

Chmerkovskiy's looming exit has been rumored for some time. Back in September 2012, the dancer told The New York Post that he planned to leave the series after his contract expired this year.

“What else do I have to do there after 15 seasons?” he told The Post. “It makes total sense. The audience can’t expect for me to want to stick around, and the producers can’t expect for me to want to stick around.”

After backpedaling on that statement, Chmerkovskiy reiterated his desire to leave "DWTS" in November, writing in a TV Guide post: "I have not made a decision about next season yet. To be honest, I have many offers and I might need a break."

According to TMZ, Chmerkovskiy's brother Val will return to the series. A rep for ABC told The Huffington Post that the network doesn't comment on casting rumors, but that the cast for the latest cycle of "Dancing with the Stars" will be announced live on "Good Morning America" on February 26.

Do you want Chmerkovskiy to stay on "DWTS"? Weigh in below!

Banksy Arrest Just One Giant Hoax

The internet was up in arms today when a clearly fake suspicious looking press release announced the alleged arrest of Britain's uber-famous street artist, Banksy. Rumors quickly circulated that the graffitist, known to decorate walls around the world with his tongue-in-cheek social criticism, had not only been apprehended, but his identity had also been revealed.

But it turns out the "news" of Banksy's arrest was just one giant hoax, likely orchestrated by a savvy online troll who takes joy in seeing media outlets report the faux news. As Business Insider confirmed, the London Metropolitan Police did not in fact nab the elusive street artist nor did they reveal his real name (Paul Horner, really?).

The perpetrator behind the internet scuffle has yet to be found, and many an online news organization are issuing corrections to amend their hasty reporting. So what's the lesson to be learned? That Banksy is an unstoppable force of nature and he should never be underestimated, much less thought to possess such a prosaic name as "Paul"? Or maybe that trolls will be trolls, even in the art world, and we should collect more information instead of jumping at easy bait.

While we all mull over this hilarious scandal, here's a Twitter round-up of some of the most entertaining responses to Banksygate 2013. In other, actually real, news, this British neighborhood still wants its Banksy artwork back.

2013 Oscar Goody Bags Are The Cheapest In 5 Years

$
0
0

The Oscar-nominated actors and actresses who don't take home a gold statue from this year's Academy Awards will still get a goody bag worth $47,802.

It may sound like quite a consolation prize -- and it is. But it's also the lowest-value gift bag given to the nominees in the last five years, Today.com reports.

“I am confident that having a $48,000 gift bag vs. a $58,000 gift bag will go unnoticed by Amy Adams, Hugh Jackman and Jennifer Lawrence,” Lash Fary, founder of the marketing firm that handles the gift bags, told Today.com in an email.

Indeed, the items in last year's so-called "swag bags" were worth slightly more than $60,000. They included $15,000 toward an open-bar event sponsored by liquor company Disaronno and good for 100 guests, and a gift certificate to a plastic surgeon.

But back in 2010? The various items totaled over $90,000. As the Toronto Sun reported that year, the hefty price tag was partly the result of a $45,000 safari in Africa and a $14,500 trip to Monte Carlo.

Fary explained to Today.com that the price discrepancy for 2013's bags is, in fact, the result of fewer vacation-based goodies than in years past. Busy schedules, Fary said, can make it hard for celebrities to get away multiple times throughout the year. (There is still a trip to Australia worth $12,000, as well as a weight-loss retreat valued at $4,000.)

According to ABC News, the nominees, along with host Seth McFarlane, will also be receiving $600 worth of acupuncture, circus classes for their children and an $1,800 one-year membership to a luxury lounge at London's Heathrow airport.

And while circus classes might sound unconventional, the most outside-the-box gift item for 2013 would have to be the "vampire facelifts." The procedure reportedly involves drawing blood from a patient and then re-injecting it into his or her face to plump the skin.

As ABC News noted, the gift bags are delivered to the recipients the morning after the awards show to lift the spirits of those who didn't win.

“Even Hollywood’s most acclaimed stars are disappointed over this particular loss,” Fary told the news outlet. “And when our consolation gift shows up the next day, we like to think it is welcome distraction.”

A-mah-zing news, "Happy Endings" fans -- the show has finally cast Alex and Jane's long-rumored (but elusive) older sister, and it sounds like she'll be Serb-ing her siblings a whole new lesson in the Kerkovich Way.

According to TVLine, "SVU" alum Stephanie March will play Brooke, and her arrival in a spring episode will "shift the Kerkovich family dynamics in a major way, mostly because Brooke can out-Jane Jane."

The only part that sooks is that "Happy Endings" has been displaced from the ABC schedule until March 29, when it will make its controversial Friday debut.

His character is described as "ambitious, intelligent and slightly cocky," and he'll be looking to make the transition from the CIA's Latin America station back to Washington -- and turning to Annie and Auggie to help him accomplish that goal. But can he be trusted? [The Hollywood Reporter]

Steven Weber will visit "Dallas." He'll recur as Governor McConaughey, "an ambitious politico who conspires with Cliff Barnes and Harris Rylan" to bring down the Ewings. [TVLine]
