Jason Schmitt: Amanda Palmer: You Need the Crowd Before the Kick

$

Amanda Palmer is rewriting the script of business as usual for hosts of creatives in the newest iteration of connectedness. She has the artillery to deliver: 37,697 tweets have been shot off from her iPhone toward her army amassing 754,297 Twitter followers -- with new recruits growing steady at 1,000 per day. Her firepower is wide reaching and blends music, art, life, femininity, sexuality, comradeship, and fuck-the-status-quo sentiments all into one tangled conversation that is widely appealing and blatantly truthful. She occupies the space somewhere between our neighbor and our long lost cousin and is part of us all because she puts herself out there honestly and unfiltered. Her frustrations, her creativity, her insecurity, and her forward thinking all flow through the digital ether rip roaring from Twitter to Tumblr, from Facebook to her blog. She can divert her levees at will and fill other needed containers with energy a la Grand Theft Orchestra's iconic Kickstarter. And although her success is legendary, she keeps true to her mantra of no filter between her and her audience -- she wants others to see the inner workings of her success and to follow the trail she has blazed.

Palmer recently led my communication studies course via Skype and told my students how natural connecting with her fans has become for her, "I like being social. I like being on Twitter. For me blogging is fun. Signing for 300 fans at the end of the night is actually fun. I like talking to people. I like hugging people." Palmer readily acknowledges that her outgoingness is an attribute for her career. On the other side of the coin Palmer says, "If you are the type of artists who does not want the constant connection and you don't have a pretty clever team behind you it is pretty hard to go out there and make money."

Palmer is the queen of connecting and is often held up as the benchmark of Kickstarter achievement. Although she has had strong crowdfunding success she is explicit that Kickstarter is not always the musician's savior and should not be the first go to for career building aspirations. "You can't meet at a bar and say, let's start a band and let's Kickstarter a record and let's get everybody really excited about it on the Internet. It doesn't really work that way. You need to have your audience in the real, tangible world, then Kickstarter is your tool." Palmer continues and says, "if you are an artist, people have to already care about you, if they are going to help you. My advice always is: have your shit ready, and your crowd ready, and your fans ready, and Kickstarter is the tool to ask them to help you."

Palmer, in fact, only asked her fans to pony up $100,000 to fund her new Theatre Is Evil album and tour, but after seeing that figure multiply 11 times over she had a new set of trials and tribulations. Palmer says:

Kickstarter for me had its pros and cons, because it did kind of suck attention away from the record which was a bummer. It took a long, long time to build that album a Kickstarter and I was hoping it would be that big. I was thinking if we play everything just right, it would be really big and people would pay attention -- not just to my album, but to the new way of doing things. And in some ways, if I am the sacrificial lamb, and some people don't like it, I at least feel, at the end of the day, I am paving the way for other artists to think about this method. People are more likely when talking about crowdfunding, and saying they don't know if it will even work, might point to mine and say it worked for her so maybe it can work for us. And that makes me feel good -- that I might have opened the doors for other artists to use it. I think it is a great system.

Perhaps due to Palmer's readily connected nature she occasionally takes a step back and asks some hard hitting questions about our digital fervor. Palmer says, "Are we getting so sucked in, that we are missing the bigger point? This stuff has happened incredibly fast. It is amazing just in my lifetime I was in college without email, and I am only in my 30s that happened incredibly fast." Following that line of reasoning Palmer says she spends "more and more time wondering, for all the tools we have, and as fantastic as they are, what is the actual quality of our lives? If these things are supposed to be improving the quality of our lives, making everything happier and easier, at the end of the day are they really or are they just stressing us out because we feel we have so many people and things we need to be connected with that we are freaking out?"

We've Seen This Before

The new connected life of artists is similar to the changing of the musical guard with relation to the microphone and amplified sound. Palmer says:

The invention of the microphone changed everything. All of a sudden musicians had this tool of a microphone, which could transmit a voice if it was subtle, like Frank Sinatra or Billy Holiday, and the microphone allowed them to be successful. And the big, loud, overboard entertainers of the twenties and thirties who were over dramatic, went out of style. I feel the same thing is true with social media. The artists who are at an advantage, at least in indie music right now, are the artists who are able to grapple with the reality that labels don't have any money, that people aren't walking into stores buying CDs anymore, and if you want to make a living, connecting with your fans directly is one of the best ways of doing it.

Amanda Palmer is outlining the limits of our digital lives through her gumption and perseverance. At the end of the day she has the correct ownership: us.

Ashton Kutcher's Hoax Caller Arrested

LOS ANGELES -- Police have arrested a juvenile they say is responsible for making prank calls that reported violence at the homes of Justin Bieber and Ashton Kutcher and led officers to respond in force to the stars' homes.

The Los Angeles Police Department on Tuesday refused to provide any details about the suspect, who was arrested Dec. 10 and is no longer in custody. Prosecutors were reviewing a possible case against the person, who police say may be responsible for multiple hoax calls intended to provoke large police responses.

The practice has been dubbed "swatting" because the calls are intended to get multiple officers, including specialized SWAT teams, sent to a home.

"The swatting practice is extremely dangerous and places first responders and citizens in harm's way," police said in a news release.

Police said the person reported multiple people had been shot at Kutcher's home on Oct.3 and reported shots fired at Bieber's home a week later. The celebrities were not home at the time, and officers determined that no one was injured.

The fake distress calls were made through an electronic system.

In a news release, police said multiple agencies including the FBI and Long Beach Police Department were involved in the investigation. Long Beach detectives who investigate cybercrimes were consulted and the agency was not involved in the arrest. Police would only say the juvenile lives in the Southern California area.

The person is suspected of being involved in other "swatting" incidents, but police did not say whether they involved celebrities. Similar hoax calls have been made involving the homes of Miley Cyrus and Simon Cowell.

MIAMI — "Scarface" actor Steven Bauer has been arrested in the Miami area, accused of driving with a suspended license.

The 52-year-old Bauer's real name is Steven Ernest Echevarria and he was booked into the Miami-Dade County Jail early Tuesday morning. It was not immediately known if he has an attorney.

His arrest report shows Bauer was stopped in Sweetwater for an improper left turn late Monday night. He was given a warning, but the officer ran his driver's license and found an open 12-year-old warrant.

Bauer played Manny Ribera in the 1983 movie "Scarface" starring Al Pacino. Bauer also starred on the bilingual PBS show "Qué Pasa, USA." He played the teenage son of a Cuban exile family in Miami from 1977 to 1979.

David Faustino is set to visit ABC's "Modern Family," reuniting the "Married With Children" star with his former on-screen father, Ed O'Neill -- at least in the credits.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Faustino will play Drew, an old classmate of Claire's (Julie Bowen) who reconnects with her at their reunion. Sadly, Faustino's visit will reportedly not feature any scenes with O'Neill's character, Jay. (Why so cruel, writers?)

Faustino is scheduled to film his appearance on Wednesday, with an airdate for the episode yet to be determined.

Other notable "Modern Family" guest stars this season include Matthew Broderick, Elizabeth Banks, Billy Dee Williams, and Elizabeth Pena as Gloria's mother.

"Modern Family" airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. EST on ABC.

Nenshi Says It Isn't Just About Bike Lanes And Food Trucks

Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi says his last two years in office have not all been about bike lanes and food trucks.

In a letter to Calgary residents highlighting what council has accomplished during his time in office, the popular mayor noted that bike lanes and food trucks have certainly added to the fabric of the city but that it's in the way the city does business that the real and profound changes can be found.

While using food trucks as an example of cutting red tape, he says eliminating Calgary's stand-alone business tax has put the city on par with other Canadian cities.

"The Cut Red Tape initiative is already yielding results, saving businesses who deal with The City many hours and thousands of dollars," said Nenshi.

The letter highlights some major changes that have been made during his term, such as removing the three dollar park-and-ride free at Calgary Transit stations, investing in a new Central Library and four new recreation centres and improving snow removal in the city.

"Some more systemic changes will take more time, but we have laid a strong groundwork that will make Calgary an even better place to live in the future," he said.

The letter also states that crime rates in Calgary are the lowest in a generation and that Calgarians report that they feel safe in the city.

Additionally, the mayor said the city continues to work on improving Calgary Transit, making Calgary a more vibrant city and creating a Charter, to ensure that Calgary can continue to grow without "bickering and buck passing between governments."

Nenshi recently announced that he will run for office again in 2013.

But not everyone is happy with what the Calgary mayor has to say.

Immigration Minister Jason Kenney reportedly told Nenshi to stop criticizing federal funding.

Calgary receives its "fair share" of funding, he said and reminded the mayor that "we have made huge additional investments in infrastructure in Calgary,” the Calgary Herald reported.

"Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star Lisa Vanderpump told HuffPost Live Tuesday that she doesn't watch Kim Kardashian's reality show, but that she "did see her porn film" and that it was "really interesting."

Vanderpump is slated to be a celebrity judge for the upcoming Miss Universe 2012 pageant alongside Scott Disick, the longtime boyfriend of Kourtney Kardashian and father of her two children, Mason and Penelope.

"You know, Lisa, one of your fellow celebrity judges is Scott Disick, of Kardashian fame, are you a fan of the Kardashians?" HuffPost Live host Alicia Menendez asked.

"I would love to say I am -- I've met them -- but having businesses that are open kind of 18 hours a day, I hardly get the time, you know, to go to the bathroom. I mean, it's hard enough for me to watch my own show ... I have to say, honestly no, I'm not."

The Miss Universe 2012 pageant will air at 8 p.m. EST on Wednesday, Dec. 19 on NBC. "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" airs on Mondays at 9 p.m. EST on Bravo. Lisa Vanderpump's "Real Housewives" spinoff "Vanderpump Rules" premieres on Monday, January 7, 2013 at 9:00 EST

"The Voice" winner was crowned on Tuesday night and Cassadee Pope took home the title of Season 3 champion.

Cassadee's fellow member of Team Blake, Terry McDermott, was the runner-up and Nicholas David of Team Cee Lo came in third.

"I love you guys. You're the weirdest, most amazing men I've ever met," Cassadee told Nicholas and Terry before the results were revealed. "I'm going to miss hanging out with you every single day." She added, "I would happy to lose to either one of them, but to win would just be absolutely incredible."

But all of the "The Voice" finalists were winners: The Top 3 each won a brand-new Kia, courtesy of St. Cee Lo Green, who was certainly in the Christmas spirit.

"The Voice" Season 3 finale was a night of star-studded performances as well, both from former contestants and chart toppers. See a full run-down below:

  • Rihanna kicked off the night with "Diamonds"

  • Bryan Keith, Amanda Brown, Rudy Parris, Michaela Paige joined Terry for KISS's "Rock and Roll All Nite"

  • Smokey Robinson performed "Cruisin' Together" with Nicholas

  • Cassadee stepped on stage with The Killers for the last verse of "Here With Me"

  • MacKenzie Bourg, Julio Cesar Castillo, Dez Duron, Cody Belew and Diego Val took on Fountains of Wayne hit "Stacy's Mom" in a diner setting

  • Newly engaged Kelly Clarkson performed "Catch My Breath," sandwiched by Cassadee and Terry

  • Melanie Martinez, Liz Davis and De'borah joined Cassadee for a girl-powered performance of Imagine Dragons' "It's Time"

  • Peter Frampton took to the stage with Terry for "Baby I Love Your Way"

  • Adriana Louise, Devyn DeLoera, Sylvia Yacoub, Loren Allred and Joselyn Rivera, clad in pink, took on "Best Of My Love"

  • Bruno Mars performed "When I Was Your Man" for the first time ever on TV

  • For his chance to bring back former contestants, Nicholas chose three contestants he thought went home too soon (Trevin Hunte, Dez Duron and Amanda Brown) to sing Boyz II Men's "End of the Road" with him

  • Cassadee Pope and Avril Lavigne performed "I'm With You," which Cassadee sang earlier in Season 3

  • All four "Voice" coaches -- Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green and Adam Levine on the guitar -- sang Green Day's "Time Of Your Life"

For more on "The Voice" winner and the Season 3 finale, read a full recap of the Tuesday night episode.

Tune in for the two-night premiere "The Voice" Season 4 -- minus Cee Lo and Christina, plus Usher and Sharkira -- on Monday, March 25 and Tuesday, March 26 at 8 p.m. EST on NBC.

We totally get that not every woman wakes up camera-ready like Kim Kardashian. But when a part of a celebrity's budget is allocated to professional hair and makeup artists, there's no excuse for stepping out on the red carpet looking like a total mess.

Nonetheless, there were many stars who made us question their sanity (and the people they call their "friends") this year because of beauty blunders. From Nicki Minaj's lace-front wigs to Christina Aguilera's neon cornrows, these famous faces have taken eccentricity to the extreme.

Click through the slideshow below to see the worst celebrity beauty looks of 2012, and tell us in the comments section which hair and makeup mishaps top your list.

'Happy Endings': Jane Has A Christmas Birthday

Jane revealed a secret dating back to her childhood on the holiday episode of "Happy Endings." She's a Christmas baby! Unhappy with having to share her birthday with the biggest of holidays, she arbitrarily changed it to July 16, and then lied about it for years.

The gang decided to gift her with making December 25, 2012 "Jane-mas" instead of Christmas. For once, she would have her true birthday not be about anything other than her. At least, that was their intention.

Things got off to a rough start, though, when they surprised her in the morning in the apartment. Lesson learned: Never surprise Jane. She pepper-sprayed the entire gang thoroughly.

It was another laugh-filled installment of "the little engine that could," as Eliza Coupe, who plays Jane, told The Hollywood Reporter. Despite the show being scheduled to depart ABC's schedule in March 2013, Coupe seems confident that the full 22-episode season will get on the air.

Of course, more viewers would certainly help the show stick around. Tune in every Tuesday at 9 p.m. EST on ABC. New episodes return January 8, 2013.

'Little People Big World': Matt And Amy's 25th Anniversary

After a short first season for their new show, the Roloffs said goodbye by celebrating Matt and Amy's 25th wedding anniversary. Amy even got back into her wedding dress for the special episode of "Little People Big World: Wedding Farm."

Through the years they've shared their lives on camera, Matt and Amy have had struggles in their marriage. There have been times when they weren't sure they wanted to be together anymore, with the idea of divorce hanging over them in a very real way. But all of that was cast aside this night, as the couple remembered why they fell in love in the first place. They've perhaps never looked happier.

"When we were both on the dance floor, for a moment, it really didn’t matter who was there. Or if anyone was there," Amy said.

Matt added, "We do feel a sense of pride and accomplishment. And we built this barn together, we built this farm, and we’ve raised these wonderful kids."

TLC has not made an announcement on the future of this new series, but it seems pretty likely the network will be checking in with the Roloffs again at some point, either in another special, a new season, or yet another series.

Jaimie Etkin: 'The Voice' Recap: Avril Lavigne Is With You, Cassadee

$

Well, third time was apparently the charm for ladies' luck with "The Voice." After two consecutive male champions, 23-year-old Floridian pop punker Cassadee Pope was crowned the winner. She was the favorite to win this year and constantly had songs on iTunes' Top 10, which gave her many, many extra votes.

Naturally, as with any season finale results show, "The Voice" filled up 120 minutes with plenty of musical acts until the results were revealed. Though Rihanna and Bruno Mars also took the stage, we've decided to only take a look at the performances that include coaches, finalists or other former "Voice" Season 3 competitors because who are we to tell you that "Diamonds" is Rihanna's worst single yet (it is) and Bruno Mars' song was a trip to snoozeville (Christina seemed to struggle to keep her eyes open)?

Below, get the lowdown on those 11 (yes, 11) performances, say goodbye to Cee Lo Green and Christina Aguilera for Season 4 and take a look at why this year's new voting system was faulty. (Where was the minus 1,000 for loving Avril Lavigne?)

Terry McDermott, Bryan Keith, Amanda Brown, Rudy Parris & Michaela Paige
"Rock and Roll All Nite," KISS

When the Nawlins resident (by way of Scotland) had the opportunity to bring back former "Voice" Season 3 contestants, it seemed like he pulled names out of a hat ... though Terry -- who looked an awful lot like Paul McCartney in the KISS performance -- did have reasons for each selection. We're pretty sure none of the five singers looked at each other and the most connection they had was their red and black ensembles.

Chelsey: "I like only one of these people, other than sweet baby angel cherub face."
Jaimie: "Michaela?"
Chelsey: "Duhhh. She's a badass chick."
Jaimie: "She is very talented as well. I love her voice. By the way, these people have not made eye contact with one another."
Chelsey: "Yeah. This was definitely a 'who's available' thing."

Smokey Robinson & Nicholas David
"Cruisin' Together," Gwyneth Paltrow Smokey Robinson

Smokey looked thrilled to join St. Nick on "The Voice" ... either that, or his eyes are stuck in a wide-open state due to the many nips and tucks his 72-year-old face has endured. Nick & Smokey sound great, but really, we're just looking at the Bruce Jenner job on poor Mr. Robinson's punim -- and wondering if Gwyneth and Huey Lewis aren't pissed they weren't asked to join.

Jaimie: "How old do you think Smokey is?"
Chelsey: "He could totally be 114."

The Killers ft. Cassadee Pope
"Here With Me," The Killers

So nice of The Killers to take time out of their busy schedule to join us on "The Voice" stage. It seems they have a new song, but Brandon Flowers is sans mustache, so is there even a point? Cassadee joins in halfway though and it's all very blah.

Jaimie: "Did you know The Killers were relevant again? Because I did not."
Chelsey: "I assumed they had disbanded. But if Blink 182 can do it, they can too!"
Jaimie: "Sure. Plus, Brand Flowers is Mormon so in my mind that means he wants to keep things at peace."

Cody Belew, MacKenzie Bourg, Julio Cesar Castillo, Dez Duron, & Diego Val
"Stacy's Mom," Fountains of Wayne

So they rounded up the bad (pretty) boyz of Season 3 to sing "Stacy's Mom" in a 50's diner setting. Because if you listen to the lyrics of "Stacy's Mom," it's totally 50's, so it definitely makes sense.

Jaimie: "MacKenzie. Melt my heart, why don't you."
Chelsey: "I think Diego is struggling with the lyrics for a change."
Jaimie: "Cody's head bob is the cutest and no offense, but how did Julio join this group."
Chelsey: "Ugh. Cody, stay forever."
Jaimie: "He looks like a gay Danny Zucko. I'm sorry, an openly gay Danny Zucko."

Kelly Clarkson ft. Cassadee Pope & Terry McDermott
"Catch My Breath," Kelly Clarkson
The artist formerly known as Miss Independent took the stage with Team Blake. The newly engaged Kelly sounded fantastic, as per usual, but looked less so, again, as per usual.

Jaimie: "I love this song."
Chelsey: "I love everything Kel does, but why is Cassadee in every performance?
Jaimie: "Because she already won."
Chelsey: "Oh right. She won this competition four weeks ago."
Jaimie: "They are really digging this 'Surprise! Look who's emerging from stage right' entrance."
Chelsey: "Ha. Hearing Terry sing this is kind of cool though."
Jaimie: "What is Kelly wearing? It's like the frumpy version of one of Cassadee's mullet dresses."
Chelsey: "Looks like what Stevie Nicks wore when she was on Season 1."

Then, Carson made a "k k k k Kelly Clarkson" joke. So we're moving on.

Cassadee Pope, Liz Davis, De'Borah, & Melanie Martinez
"It's TIme," Imagine Dragons

We were pretty excited about this collection of ladies (well, actually, we could do without Liz Davis, but we'll move past it). Cassadee says she brought these three ladies back because there's something about each of them that she really admires. It was great to see MelMar and DeBo back on "The Voice" stage, and the four of them surprisingly sounded pretty awesome together. Definitely one of our favorites of the 800 performances tonight.

Jaimie: "THE BEST. I'm ignoring Liz's presence."
Chelsey: "I'm obsessed with DeBo."
Jaimie: "She is SO GOOD. I hope Christina is realizing what an asshole she is for not picking her. MelMar is so cute."
Chelsey: "I love it."
Jaimie: "They sound really good together."
Chelsey: "Which is a rarity with this show's group performances."

Terry McDermott & Peter Frampton
"Baby I Love Your Way," Peter Frampton

Carson was super excited about this one. He's definitely a big P. Framps fan. Real talk though, this was an awesome pairing on an awesome song and they sounded awesome together. We wonder: "Did you drink awesome shooters, listen to awesome music, and just soak up each other's awesomeness?" Anyway, Terry also seemed incredibly happy to be performing with Peter Frampton, which made it even better.

Loren Allred, Devyn DeLoera, Adriana Louise, Joselyn Rivera, & Sylvia Yacoub
"Best of My Love," The Emotions

This felt like a performance for the girls that didn't quite make the cut for the first girl power performance. Second tier. Honestly, it would have taken us a bit to even remember a couple of these ladies' names had it not been for Carson's friendly reminder (cough Loren Allred cough). Anyway, the performance is '70s themed and has the big hair to match it. Disco inferno, indeed!

Jaimie: "There were the good girls ... and then there are these girls. Also, Devyn can't dance."
Chelsey: "AT ALL. That was painful. I do love Joselyn."
Jaimie: "I was just gonna say that. Also, I re-forgot about Loren Allred."
Chelsey: "Easily one of the most forgettable of the season even though she was good. And OH MY GOD: Devyn's dancing. I can't."
Jaimie: "SOOOO BAD. Comical. Thank god for Sylvia. Devyn also looking like she belongs on the 'Bridesmaids' movie poster."

Nicholas David, Trevin Hunte, Dez Duron & Amanda Brown
"End of the Road," Boyz II Men

Nicholas David picked the obligatory goodbye tune when he got the opportunity to reunite with former "Voice" Season 3 contestants. We assume he only wanted to go with Trevin, but producers made him pick two more.

Chelsey: "OMG. This is adorable. Minus Amanda and Dez."
Jaimie: "Why does everyone love Amanda? Obviously, she can sing, but she's not likable."
Chelsey: "I DON'T GET IT! And it's almost like they picked this song to remind us that Trevin should have been in the finals."
Jaimie: "It's un-na-tu-ral that he wasn't."
Chedlsey: "I just realized how much i'm going to miss Cee Lo. All it took was a Boyz II Men song."

Cassadee Pope & Avril Lavigne
"I'm With You," Avril Lavigne

Clearly, Cassadee had a thing for Avril pre-finale, considering she sang two of her songs in earlier live rounds -- "My Happy Ending" and "I'm With You" -- but we didn't know the Sk8r Gurrrrl was her "hero" until Carson informed us Tuesday night. If it's 10 points for each iTunes purchase in the Top 10, can it be minus 1,000 points for each time one displays affection towards Avril Lavigne. We get that you're a pop punker, Cass (though with what Blake's done with you these past few weeks, it is admittedly difficult to discern), but aren't there better pop/punk hero candidates: Gwen Stefani? Hayley Williams? Joan Jett? Debbie Harry? Nevertheless, there was Avril, arm warmers and all.

Jaimie: "Her 'HERO?'!?! Cassadee, that mere fact alone should make you lose this competition."
Chelsey: "So true. Like not only is Avril the worst, but engaged to the guy from Nickelback who is also the worst."
Jaimie: "And she WAS married to the guy from Sum 41."
Chelsey: "I don't mind Deryk, to be honest."
Jaimie: "Yeah, only AFTER he divorced her and dressed up as her for Halloween."
Chelsey: "TRUE"

Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green & Adam Levine
"Good RIddance (Time of Your Life)," Green Day

It didn't really hit us how weird and different things will be next season with a new foursome until now. I mean, X-Tina, sure, she's a cray, but what will do without Cee Lo and his pets!? It's like the last day of summer camp.

So, of course, they brought the four coadges of the past three seasons on stage to sing the most cliche possible song in the universe. It'd be funny if they were in on the joke of what a ridiculous song choice this is. But they most certainly don't appear to be. Oddly enough, we didn't hate it. Maybe because we feel as invested in this show as they've been, since the amount of hours we have spent on it is probably close to the same amount of hours the coadges have spent on it. (Note: That MIGHT be an exaggeration, whatever).

Jaimie: "OK. So this was clearly filmed last night. Cee Lo couldn't even bother to change."
Chelsey: "This is emotional, but hilarious, and I'm kind of obsessed with it. They have their own bat mitzvah montage going on in the background."
Jaimie: "Was this in your bat mitzvah montage?"
Chelsey: "No, it was in everyone else's so I wanted to be different. Obviously."
Jaimie: "Typical."

And bundle-of-emotion Carson Daly ends it with, "Your coaches, our family." Deep, bro. We wouldn't have it any other way.

4/26/11 - 12/19/12. One love.

Hopefully, Christina and Cee Lo will return and some point and hopefully, the producers will correct the scoring system. While it was great to see iTunes purchases count towards votes, we think they went a little overboard.

Jaimie: "It was a very predictable evening
Chelsey: "That iTunes rule pretty much revealed Cassadee as the winner weeks ago."
Jaimie: "I don't know why it has to be 10 times a regular vote."
Chelsey: "That's an absurd amount."
Jaimie," Like. Two times ... MAYBE."
Chelsey: "RIGHT. 10 is ABSURD."

Enjoy your "Voice" free three-and-a-half months, all. Until 2013!

LeAnn Rimes Says New Album Is About Her Affair

LeAnn Rimes once again opened up about the extramarital affairs that lead to her current marriage. She and Eddie Cibrian both cheated on their then-spouses before ultimately getting divorces and getting married. All of this went down very publicly, and continues to be so thanks to appearances like her latest one on "The Tonight Show."

Rimes isn't trying to hide from what happened. In fact, she took a very honest look at the whole situation and used it to fuel her latest album, "Spitfire." She talked about her use of the word "pathetic" in the lead single, "Borrowed."

"I loved using that word. That’s the only way I knew how to describe myself, because at the moment I was pretty pathetic," she said. "It’s a very intimate look into a very rough moment in my life."

The affairs have also been a minor talking point on "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills," which features Cibrian's ex-wife, Brandi Glanville, among its cast. Rimes joked that she was "flattered" to be a storyline on the show.

Catch "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" every weeknight at 11:35 p.m. EST on NBC.

'Real Housewives of New York City' Season 6 Cast Could Be Uncertain

Season 5 of "The Real Housewives of New York City" saw the largest cast-change in "Real Housewives" franchise history. Four ladies, Alex McCord, Jill Zarin, Kelly Bensimon and Cindy Barshop were fired and replaced with three new cast members, Aviva Drescher, Carole Radziwell and Heather Thomson, resulting in a double-digit ratings decline.

“It's very simple: Shows like 'Housewives' are about ratings,” one network executive tells The Huffington Post. “It’s not a high-class show like 'Mad Men' that wins awards and appeals to top-notch advertisers. That’s why such a dramatic ratings drop is so devastating.”

Season 5 became the second-lowest-rated season of the New York show dropping 26 percent in the 18-49 demo from season 4, leaving Bravo executives to debate whether to make more cast changes for the next season or move ahead with the existing cast.

“At the moment, it looks like all the ladies will be invited back, but alternatives are being discussed. Taping has been pushed back from January to the end of February until decisions have been finalized; at the moment, no cast members have been told they will be coming back,” one insider says.

“The show still gets a decent audience, plus, as the audience got to know the new ladies, ratings grew as the season progressed. The biggest question now is, will the three new ladies get a pay raise from the $40,000 per season they currently earn and will Ramona Singer and LuAnn De Lesseps be asked to take a pay cut from the $400,000 they get?”

A spokesperson for Bravo had no comment.

Happy holidays!

With only a few days left until Christmas, celebrities were dishing out all the news they could -- including pregnancy and engagement announcements.

On Dec. 15, Kelly Clarkson revealed she was engaged to her boyfriend of a year, Brandon Blackstock. The singer, 30, took to Twitter to announce the happy news, sharing a photo of her ring. "Everyone has been asking about my engagement ring, so here it is :)" she wrote, "It's a yellow canary diamond with diamonds around."

And that's not all. "Scrubs" star Donald Faison married his longtime love CaCee Cobb at pal Zach Braff's house in Los Angeles, Calif., on Dec. 15. Cobb's BFF Jessica Simpson was on hand to celebrate the nuptials, serving as a bridesmaid while covering up her reported baby bump.

Also this week, Channing Tatum and his wife Jenna Dewan-Tatum announced that they were expecting their first baby. Dewan-Tatum walked the red carpet at the VH1 Divas event on Dec. 16, flaunting her barely-there belly.

And in other news, Drew Barrymore opened up about what what she thinks of Kristen Wiig's relationship with her ex-boyfriend Fabrizio Moretti. Let's just say, she's not overjoyed about their hot new romance.

"It all seems so wacky and incestuous, but that's kind of how life works," Barrymore tells Allure's January issue. "It seems fitting that they would find each other," she continues. "I was like, 'Right, of course, that makes perfect sense.'"

Plus, James Marsden welcomed a son William Luca with ex-girlfriend Rose Costa and Samaire Armstrong gave birth to her first child, baby boy Calin.

Emmy-winning actress Danes -- who was recently nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in "Homeland" -- opened up about impending motherhood on "Anderson Live" in September, telling Anderson Cooper she was looking forward to welcoming her first baby.

"There's no way of anticipating what that's going to mean for us, but we are very excited," Danes said of her and Dancy. "We are going to love this person, I know that."

Should The Entertainment Industry Monitor Violence?

Following the massacre of 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. on Dec. 14, Hollywood has responded with sensitivity.

Premieres for "Jack Reacher" and "Django Unchained" -- two violent films out this month -- were canceled. Fox Television pulled episodes of "Family Guy" and "American Dad," and rescheduled them for a later date. Radio stations across the country stopped playing the Ke$ha single "Die Young" because of its title and lyrics, and even Ke$ha herself backed away from the song. (She tweeted -- and quickly deleted -- that she never wanted to sing "Die Young" and was "forced" to record it for her album.) Yet the question remains: Will Hollywood ever stop using violence in its product?

“Violence is both a moneymaker -- audiences love it -- and an artist’s tool," Martin Kaplan, director of the Norman Lear Center for the study of entertainment and society at the University of Southern California, told The New York Times. "Of course, it can be gratuitous. For every Scorcese or Peckinpah, there’s a schlockmeister who’s only in it for the dough. But who do we want to empower to decide whether Quentin Tarantino or a 'Grand Theft Auto' goes over the line? The government? The industry? Or the audience, which is where Hollywood wants to put the control."

That's a question which will be asked often in the coming weeks and months, which is why HuffPost Entertainment wants your input. As the nation tries to heal itself after the tragic murders in Newtown, Conn., should Hollywood take a hard look at the content it produces? Or is it the responsibility of the audience to take a stand?

With apologies to Frank Sinatra, 2012 wasn't a very good year for celebrities with homes on the market, and maybe not so good for anyone else with a home to sell either. The lesson of the recession and the housing market crash remains this: It doesn't matter who you are -- everybody pretty much took it on the chin if they tried to sell a house.

Here's a sampling of what happened to Los Angeles-area homes owned by celebrities in 2012. And before you start screaming at us like crazy headless chickens, we know this isn't a complete list. Among the missing are private sales, pocket listings and celebrities we just can't bear to talk about anymore (read: Real Housewives of Anywhere.)
