PHOTO: Russell Crowe Saved By U.S. Coast Guard

NEW YORK — Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe lost his way kayaking in the waters off New York's Long Island and was picked up by a U.S. Coast Guard boat and ferried to a harbor, officials said Sunday.

The 48-year-old actor was kayaking with a friend and launched from Cold Spring Harbor Saturday afternoon on the Long Island Sound, according to U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Robert Swieciki. As it got dark, the two got lost and eventually headed for shore, beaching their kayaks in Huntington Bay, nearly 10 miles east from where they had set out.

The U.S. Coast Guard was patrolling the area, and heard Crowe call out to them from the shore around 10 p.m., Swieciki said. The "Gladiator" actor and his friend, who Swieciki didn't recognize, paddled over to the boat. The Coast Guard officers pulled them up and, along with their kayaks, gave them a ride to Huntington Harbor.

"He just needed a little bit of help, he just got a little lost," Swieciki said. "It wasn't really a rescue, really, more of just giving someone a lift."

Swieicki said no one was injured, and the two men were wearing life vests. He said the actor, who was grateful and friendly, seemed like he was a fairly experienced kayaker.

Crowe sent a Twitter message about 1:30 a.m. Sunday thanking the officers, and saying he was out on the water four and a half hours.

"Thanks to Seth and the boys from the US Coast Guard for guiding the way...4 hrs 30 mins, 7m(11.2km)," he wrote.

Crowe is on Long Island filming a new movie called "Noah" in Oyster Bay. The biblical epic is directed by Darren Aronofsky and scheduled for release in 2014.

Crowe won an Academy Award for best actor for his role as a Roman soldier called Maximus in "Gladiator."

The Best Summer Movies You Didn't See

0

Judging from the box office results, you probably saw "Marvel's The Avengers," "The Dark Knight Rises" and even "Magic Mike" -- three of summer's best films. You've also likely caught Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom" at this point -- with $44 million in ticket sales, it was the art house release of the summer in North America -- and have at least heard of "Beasts of the Southern Wild," a potential Oscar contender that has already gotten stamps of approval from Oprah Winfrey and Barack Obama.

That's great, but what about all the other movies you missed this summer? With Labor Day marking the unfortunate end of Country Time Lemonade season, HuffPost Entertainment is here to highlight eight releases that you possibly skipped during the last three months. Check out the slideshow below for our picks and feel free to leave your own hidden summer gems in the comments section.

PHOTOS: Hilary Duff Hits The Town In Leather Leggings

The pressure for new celebrity moms to shed the "baby weight" is higher than ever, to the point where even the former editor-in-chief of Us Weekly, after giving birth to her own child, declared, "Can a mom get a break?"

So we commend any famous mummy who says, "Screw the paparazzi and the tabloids, I'm going out!" New mom Hilary Duff, who gave birth to her first child, Luca, back in March, headed to the Chateau Marmont for a girls' night this weekend, donning leather leggings and a sparkling black tube top. You go, girl.

The former Disney star told Us Weekly earlier this summer, "I think if you ask any pregnant mom, they're like 'I want my body back,' but it takes time... It takes nine months for your body to get that way and it's putting on that weight on purpose." PREACH. Also, who cares how much you weigh as long as you're happy?

And any new mom escaping the house for a rare night out is bound to be very, very happy.

Check out Hilary's "going-out" outfit below. Are you a fan of leather leggings?

Why Isla Fisher Thinks Her Character Is 'Actually Stupid'

0
0

The first time you saw Isla Fisher may have been in "Wedding Crashers," in which she stole the show as the sister of the bride. In the "Bachelorette" movie, which opens on Friday, she plays another not-so-innocent bridesmaid, but this time her antics are even more extreme and the humor is much darker. Her character, Katie, reunites with three friends, fellow members of the high school clique the B-Faces, for a wedding, and right from the start, she's ready to party. When Katie and Regan (Kirsten Dunst) get high on cocaine and decide to try on the bride's dress together, it rips, and they're forced to race around New York City trying to get it fixed before the wedding the next morning. Fisher spoke with the Huffington Post about grown women who are stuck in a high school mind-set, the joys of working with a female-driven cast and what it was like to dig through trash outside a strip club at 4 a.m.

What attracted you to the character of Katie?
From a comedic stance, she’s just a classic fish out of a water, overconfident dumb-dumb who, when you’re improvising within the constraints of a character like that, anything you say is acceptable. So it’s very freeing. And then story-wise, it just felt like there’s a lot of pathos to her. She’s very unhappy underneath her bubbly veneer. So there was drama as well as comedy, which is my favorite combination.

There’s a line where she asks, “Do you think I’m stupid?” Do you think she’s just gotten used to playing the role of the ditzy girl and doesn’t allow herself to show her smarter side?
No, I think Katie’s actually stupid. I think she’s not bothered to get educated. She feels like the world owes her something. She’s part of that Peter Pan generation of people who are just rich, white, entitled, still stuck in high school mentality. And I think when she says that, it’s so poignant and tragic. I actually improvised that line. Because it just sums up how sad she really is. I’m sure if she’d applied herself she could be smart, but she’s just let herself go with drugs and alcohol.

She seems to also equate people liking her with people finding her attractive and wanting to sleep with her. Do you think that ever changes for someone like her?
I think it probably would change for her eventually because as she ages less people will want to sleep with her. I think it’s a very interesting character, and that’s what’s great about Leslye Headland’s writing -- all the characters are really multilayered, and they all have their own individual character arcs. And there’s no redemption at the end really. You know the girls are just gonna go on ahead carrying on their lives in this meaningless way and not feeling any sense of social responsibility. They’re just lost.

What was it like working with such a female-driven cast and a female director?
It was just amazing. Leslye is a very big laugher, and that’s kind of all you want in comedy. She would giggle at the end of every take or every improv line or every one of her lines, however you delivered it. And that support from behind the camera is like a little engine behind you. You just feel like, “Oh, I can do this! I can do this!” And I think, too, sometimes men can be threatened if you’re funny in a scene, ‘cause they feel competitive, whereas what’s great about the dynamic between the three of us is we’re all really supportive of each other, and because of the different natures of our characters, there was never any need to outdo.

I think we got incredibly lucky with Rebel [Wilson] because that character, without her being so sympathetic, we wouldn’t really have cared about the dress, we wouldn’t have cared about the story. Then Kirsten was a complete blessing. She could have been shrieky, but instead, she plays it for real. And Lizzy [Caplan] is equal parts tough and vulnerable, which is really a wonderful and beguiling combination.

Was there a scene that was especially fun to do?
The scene that stands out the most is us digging through trash bags in New York. I just remember thinking, “Oh my gosh, how it is that I’m on all fours with my head in a black plastic bag right now at 4 a.m. outside of Scores nightclub?”

Is it fun to play the party girl?
Oh, gosh, yes! Particularly if you knew the contrast between myself and Katie in my everyday life. I’m usually Gymboree mom, super-organized and with the kids, and there I was pretending to be high on cocaine and alcohol at 4 a.m. on a New York street saying the stupidest thing that I could possibly think of.

You got married a few years ago. Did you have a bachelorette party?
I did, but I was pregnant at the time, so it was a very genteel affair.

The Latest On 'Avatar 4'

Those of you putting aside ticket money for "Avatar 4" might want to reallocate those resources elsewhere. In a new interview with the Courier-Post, "Avatar" producer Jon Landau clarified that while plans are in motion to shoot "Avatar 2" and "Avatar 3" back-to-back, the potential fourth film in the franchise will not happen just yet.

Back in June, "Avatar" co-star Sigourney Weaver caused a stir when she reportedly claimed to be heading back to the James Cameron-created world of Pandora for three consecutive films. Cameron himself had earlier revealed plans for a fourth "Avatar" film in an interview with the New York Times.

"I'm making 'Avatar 2,' 'Avatar 3,' maybe 'Avatar 4,'" Cameron said. "I'm not going to produce other people's movies for them. I’m not interested in taking scripts."

As the director famously told the paper, he is now in "the 'Avatar' business."

However, even Cameron admitted that "Avatar 4" was a ways off. In a July interview, the King of the World told the Times that reports of a fourth film were "premature" but not out of the question.

As for "Avatar 2," Cameron has allowed that the film probably won't hit theaters until 2015 at the earliest. Not that fans should be too upset: "Avatar" arrives on Blu-ray 3D for the first time starting on Oct. 16.

For more on that release, head over to the Courier-Post.

Blake Lively Is Totally OK With Her Cellulite

We've always loved Blake Lively for her no-stylist stance and, well, because she seems so damn nice and likable. But this summer we fell further in love when we glimpsed paparazzi pics of Blake in her bathing suit. Was that cellulite we spied? That she was making no efforts to cover up? How refreshing! How real! How "just like us" of her!

Turns out Blake is totally confident in her body and accepting of her (very rare, almost imperceptible) physical imperfections. The newly married star (what, didn't you hear?) opened up to Allure in the October issue:

"I wish I could lie and say that I do something [to stay fit], but..." She cuts herself short, perhaps realizing how unfair it sounds. "I obviously have plenty of imperfections on my body, but I'd rather have a little bit of cellulite and go do a food trip and try every ice cream place in the South."

Um, samesies! You pack the car snacks and we'll bring the mix tapes, Blake?

As refreshing as it is to hear a celeb so at peace with her body, we wish magazines would be equally accepting of physical flaws. Lively was photographed by Carter Smith for the ethereal cover shoot, which depicts the "Gossip Girl" star frolicking in the woods with her adorable niece and nephew. But she looks pretty close to perfect even in a pair of teeny Michael Kors undies, with not a bump nor line visible. In other words, even the most confident actresses are subject to some light Photoshop.

Oh well. Check out Blake's new Allure cover below and see the gorgeous pics at Allure.com.

WATCH: Anthony Bourdain Reads Aloud From Snooki's Book

Anthony Bourdain isn't one to hide his contempt for anyone or anything, but the "No Reservations" host keeps things to a wink and a nod in the following clip featuring him reading aloud an excerpt from "Jersey Shore" star Nicole Polizza's book, A Shore Thing.

Truth be told, we're not sure why exactly Bourdain chose this passage for the video, which he recorded in apology for his absence at the first anniversary celebration for Manhattan ice cream shop, Big Gay Ice Cream. But, like all wonderful things on the internet, we're not going to question it.

Without further ado, Bourdain performing a very "Snooki" monologue.

WATCH: Aaron Paul Stars In Addiction Dramedy 'Smashed'

0
0

With "Breaking Bad" off television until sometime next year, fans will have to get their fix elsewhere. Which is at least part of the reason why "Smashed" should be their radars: The film stars Aaron Paul as an alcoholic struggling with sobriety.

The other reason to dog-ear "Smashed" -- especially if you aren't a "Breaking Bad" fan? Because Mary Elizabeth Winstead gives a breakout performance in the lead role.

In the film, Winstead plays Paul's onscreen wife, who decides to dry out after a particularly lengthy bender. Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally, Octavia Spencer and Mary Kay Place all star in "Smashed," which received strong reviews at Sundance in January -- particularly for Winstead. As Movieline's Jen Yamato posits, Winstead's "Smashed" role is the kind of "meaty" part that usually gets actresses Oscar nominations. In a year without a Best Actress frontrunner -- Jennifer Lawrence and Marion Cotillard are the early clubhouse leaders -- could Winstead sneak in?

Watch the trailer above and decide for yourself when "Smashed" arrives in theaters on Oct. 12.

'Go On' Cast On Grief Comedy & Working With Matthew Perry

0
0

"Go On" re-aired its premiere episode last night, and tonight marks the show's official premiere with Episode 2, "He Got Game, She Got Cats" (premieres Tues., Sept. 11, 9 p.m. ET on NBC), where grieving widow Ryan King (Matthew Perry) realizes he may not have all the answers after all.

HuffPost TV caught up with some of Perry's co-stars to find out more about working with the "Friends" alum, learning about this very special group of people, Ryan's life at work outside of the group and what's to come.

Keep reading for more scoop from Laura Benanti, who stars as the support group's Type-A leader, Lauren; Brett Gelman, a regular at UCB, who plays Mr. K, a man whose grief is obvious but also a total mystery; Suzy Nakamura, who plays the group's wannabe star student Yolanda; and John Cho, who plays Steven, Ryan's boss and best friend who mandates his grief therapy.

On working with Matthew Perry
Laura Benanti: "He's the worst. He's not handsome, he's not funny, he's not smart ... no, he's the best. He's truly a great guy. I feel like I've known all these guys for a long time already."

John Cho: "For me, I'm working with a hero of mine, Matthew Perry. I've stolen so much from him over the years, it's kind of embarrassing. [Laughs.] I told him, 'This is really weird for me. You're my teacher, but you don't even know you're my teacher. So you don't know how big this moment is for me.'"

Suzy Nakamura: "He's great ... and I'm not just saying that. He's a team player and our leader. We all look to him because he has so much experience, but he also makes sure we're all working toward to same goal, as an ensemble, which is making this sweet, emotional, funny show. It's not easy for him -- he does a lot of the heavy lifting -- but he's great.

"With Matthew's character, he's obviously the coolest guy that I've ever met and I want to be best friends with him. And that's not far from the actual reality. He cares about the show first -- he wants everybody to shine."

More about the group's many characters
Brett Gelman on Mr. K: "He's definitely the weirdest of the group, but in a way, he's the simplest and most straightforward. He wants friends really bad, and that's really his main thing. He's complicated with how he pursues that, but ... [laughs] really he just wants to be loved. But the group's really a family, and they accept him more and more as the show goes on, and everybody accepts each other."

Laura Benanti on Lauren: "She is just as messed up as they are in some ways. Inherently, I'm the straight man to these folks, but I love that Scott [Silverli, creator] is allowing me to explore her sense of humor as well. I love that he's constantly throwing in little weird things for her."

Suzy Nakamura on Yolanda: "Yolanda is the teacher's pet. She wants to please! The groups knows why she's there, but the audience doesn't know why she's there yet -- it'll be revealed. I think she could be annoying, but since her intentions are so good and pure, it's funny. We all know people like that, don't we?"

About Ryan's life outside of group
John Cho: "Right now, it's really about these two guys who are trying to figure out this terrible thing together, and they're incredibly ill-equipped to talk about these things, and that's funny to me. And it's real."

What's next?
Laura Benanti:
"I want to explore a little bit more of her background, like why she was 40 pounds heavier. I might like a flashback episode. But what led her to Weight Watchers, and what led her to this group? I would like to see her in more stressful situations, too -- with all of her purported knowledge of how to handle oneself, I feel like when it comes to her, it'd all go out the window. In Episode 4, we experience her having a stressful reaction, and the group helps her, which I really loved. But we're also going to see the character outside of the group, relating to each other more socially away from the circle."

"Go On" premieres Tues., Sept. 11, 9 p.m. ET on NBC.

Actress Rosario Dawson is using her high-profile status as a Hollywood icon to help motivate young Americans to get involved and vote.

After the Opportunity: What Is Working jobs panel Wednesday at the DNC in which Dawson expressed her interest in youth issues, The Huffington Post caught up with the actress to discuss her philanthropic activities.

The "Sin City" and "Rent" star works closely with Voto Latino, an organization designed to empower young Latinos, along with other youth development organizations to help spur young people to take action in their communities.

"We (Voto Latino) do so much, we do census issues, and we do voter registration. She later added, "Everything falls under the umbrella of voting and so it's great for me to be able to talk and interact with young people."

Giuliana & Bill's Baby To Make Magazine Debut

Get ready to meet Giuliana and Bill Rancic's baby boy, Edward Duke Rancic, as he will soon be making his debut as a cover boy.

“We have been talking about this and are leaning towards doing a cover shoot,” Giuliana told me just before the baby arrived. “You understand why a lot of celebrities go that route: It's safe and stops photographers chasing you around trying to get the first pictures.”

In the past few months, "Jersey Shore" star Snooki and Kourtney Kardashian both opted to debut their babies on weekly magazine covers. But when pictures of Edward debut, take a good look. This mom vows not to be one of those mothers who is constantly showing off their kid.

“I am going to do everything in my power to not be that person that shows baby pictures every 30 seconds,” Giuliana told me in July. “Because I know what that's like. But I can't make promises.”

Chris Brown's Neck Tattoo Starts A Trend

Chris Brown recently debuted a neck tattoo that bears a striking resemblance to the photos taken of his ex-girlfriend Rihanna after he brutally attacked her in 2009. While there's some debate as to whether or not the tat is an actual depiction, there's no question that tattooing an artistic representation of your most publicly-shameful moment onto your neck would be downright ridiculous.

After seeing some awesome examples on Best Roof Talk Ever, we decided to take some swings of our own. What would other celebrity neck tattoos look like?

Pretty glorious, it turns out.

When Kelsey Grammer appeared on “Conan,” he wanted to make it perfectly clear that he didn’t make love to his new wife, Kayte Walsh, the first night he met her. But now his ex, Camille Grammer, is calling him a liar.

“Well, we kissed that night ... We didn’t do anything much more than kiss for several months,” Kelsey told Conan O’Brien. “I just wanted to clear that up. She was worth the wait.”

“I would think that would be difficult,” Conan said, laughing. Grammer replied, “Well, for a guy that hadn’t had sex for a decade it wasn’t that hard!”

“He lied on Conan,” Camille tweeted at me. “He really needs to move on.” Kelsey has not hid his harsh feelings toward his ex, even saying publicly that he got her a job as a cast member on “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” as a parting gift.

Kelsey Grammer can't seem to put a lid on it.

On Monday, he stopped by "Conan" and addressed rumors that he slept with his now-wife Kayte Walsh the night they met -- six months before he split from ex-wife Camille Grammer. The "Boss" actor told Conan that, actually, he and Walsh "didn't do much more than kiss for several months."

When Conan commented on how difficult that must have been, Grammer said, "Well for a guy who hadn't had sex for a decade, it wasn't that hard."

This isn't the first time Grammer has made a public dig at his ex. Last month, in an episode of "Oprah's Next Chapter," he told Oprah Winfrey he felt that he "owed" Camille fame. And last year, in an interview with the Australian morning show "Sunrise," he said that his ex's reality TV career on "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" was his "parting gift to her."

The former couple, who have two children together, finalized their divorce in February 2011 after 13 years of marriage. Just two weeks later, Kelsey married his fourth wife, Walsh. The couple welcomed daughter Faith, their first child together, in July.

Grammer is hardly the first celebrity to talk about his ex publicly. Click through the slideshow below for 10 others, then weigh in: Should Grammer ditch his loose-lipped ways?

Avril Lavigne's recent engagement to Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger has provided the Canadian songstress -- and budding designer -- an opportunity to design her dream wedding dress.

In an interview with People, Lavigne said she may even "buy a few different dresses and rip them up and put them all together and dye them."

Whatever she ends up wearing, Lavigne has promised fans a "badass wedding gown" according to the Associated Press.

For her first wedding to another Canadian rocker, Deryck Whibley of Sum 41 in 2006, Avril wore a traditional all-white -- and intact -- gown by Vera Wang.

Company Behind Tupac Hologram Files For Bankruptcy

0
0

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Less than a year after going public, the digital production company founded by director James Cameron has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and agreed to sell the core of its business to a private investment firm for $15 million.

Digital Domain Media Group Inc., best known for its work on Cameron's "Titanic," has produced visual effects for more than 90 movies, including "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" and the "Transformers" series. And in April, its Tupac Shakur hologram made a splash when it took the stage at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and appeared to perform alongside Snoop Dogg.

But the company was "running out of cash," Chief Restructuring Officer Michael Katzenstein said in court filings, and had violated cash and debt requirements set forth by its lenders. It tried to find additional outside sources of capital, but wasn't able get enough to restructure its debt and pay its operating expenses, he said.

The downward spiral was swift. The company went public just 10 months ago but sold nearly five million shares at $8.50 each, below the expected $10 to $12 range. Drifting to the $5 range by spring, the stock then spiked as high as $9.20 following huge reaction to the Shakur hologram, with the performance garnering 15 million YouTube hits within 48 hours and winning a top award at the creative marketing gathering Cannes Lions. Building on the buzz, Digital Domain got the greenlight to create an Elvis Presley hologram for shows, film, TV and other projects worldwide, including appearances.

But by August the struggling company said it would review its options, suggesting a possible sale. Shares have fallen as low as 44 cents in recent days.

Digital Domain, based in Port St. Lucie, Fla., has studios in California and Canada that create digital visual effects, animation and digital production for the entertainment and advertising industries. The company had spent the past few years building a new animation studio in Port St. Lucie, using millions in incentives from the city and the state. But it defaulted on a series of loans and just days ago said it would lay off about 280 workers and close its Florida facility. CEO John Textor, also the company's second-largest shareholder, resigned, protesting the decision.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott has ordered his inspector general to investigate the process used to award millions in state incentives that were used to lure Digital Domain to the state.

Digital Domain filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware, along with a Canadian court. Day-to-day operations of Digital Domain's remaining business won't be affected by the Chapter 11 filing, the company said. Debt holders have agreed to provide up to $20 million in financing that will fund its activities while it restructures.

As of June 30, the company had total assets of about $205 million and total liabilities of about $214 million.

The sale agreement with Searchlight Capital Partners LP includes the company's operating subsidiaries in the U.S. and Canada. It remains subject to an auction process where the company can consider other higher offers, and must be approved by the court.
