Angie Harmon Now Designs Beautiful, Ethical Jewelry

0
We know actress Angie Harmon as the crime-fighting detective Jane Rizzoli on the hit TNT series "Rizzoli & Isles," but the mom of three also has a creative side. When she learned about Red Earth, an ethical lifestyle brand that supports artisans from around the world, the actress says she knew immediately that she wanted to get involved.

"Red Earth is an ethical jewelry company that provides work and wages for people in Africa," Harmon tells "Oprah: Where Are They Now?" "I wanted to be a part of it because I think that's incredible."

From her home in Charlotte, N.C., Harmon shows some of the pieces she designed for the Angie Harmon X Red Earth collection in the above video. Starting at $30, the line includes a full range of accessories made from materials like skulls, bone and brass. Each piece is designed by Harmon and handmade by a skilled artisan who is paid upfront for his or her work.

"Yes, it's a creative outlet, but it's about exposing the talent and giving the credit to these artist and designers in Africa," Harmon says.

The rugged-yet-elegant pieces have a modern edge, but it's the love and hard work put into every piece that makes the line unique. "That's what makes it so special," Harmon says.

"Oprah: Where Are They Now?" airs Saturdays at 9 p.m. ET on OWN.

Elizabeth Banks Chooses To Diss Tara Reid For Reasons We Don't Quite Understand

Things are going pretty well for Elizabeth Banks.

Her career as an actress has taken off to the point that she's almost a household name, appearing alongside the likes of Jennifer Lawrence in "The Hunger Games" franchise. And now, she's directing the much-anticipated return of the Barden Bellas in "Pitch Perfect 2."

But while discussing just how well her life is going with The Hollywood Reporter, who notes that she has 70 roles under her belt, the 41-year-old took a seemingly random shot at fellow actress Tara Reid, and we were all like, huh?

"A lot of us are surviving. Some of us are not. I used to go to auditions with Tara Reid. So, you know, we didn't all make it. We're not all still here," she told the magazine, before quickly adding, "I do love Sharknado."

If you're perplexed as to why Banks threw Reid under the bus, Reid is too. The "American Pie" star told TMZ, "I've always been a fan of her work and that’s sad to hear she said those things about me."

Larry Wilmore Sits Down With Baltimore Gang Members To Discuss Truce And Ongoing Unrest

Larry Wilmore continued his coverage of ongoing protests in Baltimore on Thursday night's episode of “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore.” After lambasting the media's approach to the unrest earlier this week, the comedian took coverage into his own hands. His angle? Discussing the issue with local rival gangs at a diner over a slice of pie.

Wilmore sat down with members from the Bloods, Crips, and Black Guerilla families for a roundtable discussion on a number of topics, namely their recent truce in an effort to bring peace and justice to Baltimore.

“We didn’t have a truce or a treaty; we just had men respecting men as men. And we carried it just like that,” one member said before later explaining why he feels many Americans can’t relate to the oppression that takes place in impoverished inner city neighborhoods.

“If you’re living in a million dollar house how could you relate to living in the hood getting pushed? You good,” he added. “So you can’t understand what we’re going through. Same as when you’re like, ‘Hey man, I gotta pay my property taxes.’ I can’t relate to that. I never paid property taxes before. So I understand that. We just need them to understand that.”

Another man went on to recall a personal encounter with authorities that took place during Monday night’s violence, describing what happened when he and other gang members attempted to stop middle school and high school students from throwing objects at police and looting local businesses.

“The police pull up in their tank... they jumped out with their assault rifles. And I’m like, Damn, this is ‘Call of Duty.' What the f*ck is going on here,” he explained. “So we ran through the alley to the projects, made sure everyone else was O.K., and went right back to our post and linked arms to make sure nobody got into that store. They set one police car on fire and we stopped them from setting the other one on fire.”

Check out more of Larry Wilmore’s segment with local Baltimore gang members in the clip above.

Legendary Blues Musician B.B. King Confirms He Is In Hospice Care

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Blues legend B.B. King was in hospice care Friday at his home in Las Vegas, according to a longtime business associate with legal control over his affairs.

The 89-year-old musician posted thanks on his official website for fans' well-wishes and prayers after he returned home from a brief hospitalization, said Laverne Toney, King's longtime business manager and current power-of-attorney. "Mr. King is where he wishes to be," Toney said. "He's always told me he doesn't want to be in a hospital. He wants to be at home."

An ambulance was summoned Thursday after what Las Vegas police Officer Jesse Roybal characterized as a domestic dispute over medical care. No arrests were made, and Roybal said no criminal complaint was filed.

Toney disputed reports by celebrity website TMZ citing one of King's daughters as saying she called police because she was upset about her father's condition and that he had suffered a minor heart attack. Efforts by the Associated Press to reach the daughter, Patty King, were not immediately successful.

Paramedics checked King's heart rhythm, and he was treated at the hospital for complications of high blood pressure and diabetes, Toney said. King was diagnosed with diabetes decades ago.

Roybal confirmed that police received a report on Nov. 16 claiming abuse at the house. No charges have been filed, and the police spokesman said details of the investigation were not immediately available.

King's hospitalization was the second in a month. He posted a similar message to fans when he returned home April 7.

He canceled the final shows of his 2014 tour last October after falling ill in Chicago.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer is considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time. He has released more than 50 albums and sold millions of records worldwide.

His guitar, famously named Lucille, has soared and wailed in songs ranging from "Every Day I Have the Blues" to "When Love Comes to Town" to "The Thrill is Gone."

File this one under: Yay!!!

Famously animal-loving Jon Stewart is said to have bought a farm in New Jersey, for purposes of giving home to rescued farm animals.

The announcement was made by Farm Sanctuary, which has three of its own pastoral paradises for neglected and abused farm animals.

Stewart and his wife Tracey are well-known animal advocates who have a longstanding relationship with with the group. In fact Tracey has a book about animals coming out in the fall, called Do Unto Animals: A Friendly Guide to How Animals Live, and How We Can Make Their Lives Better, with some of the proceeds going to Farm Sanctuary.

The couple has a small menagerie of their own already -- Tracey told USA Today that their brood currently includes two each of kids, pigs, hamsters, guinea pigs and fish, plus four dogs, three rabbits and a parrot.

"All rescues," she said. "Except for the children."

Farm Sanctuary spokesperson Meredith Turner couldn't give The Huffington Post many details about the Stewarts' reported farm animal haven, but she did say, “We are ecstatic that there are people in the world like Jon and Tracey who care about the plight of factory farmed animals, and we encourage others to join them in support of Farm Sanctuary’s efforts to rescue, provide shelter and advocacy for these beautiful individuals.”

Taryn Manning Says Laverne Cox Taught The 'OITNB' Cast A Lot About Trans Issues

Actress and LGBT advocate Laverne Cox has made quite an impression on her "Orange Is The New Black" co-stars.

Taryn Manning, aka Pennsatucky, stopped by "The HuffPost Show" on Friday and said that Cox's wise words about gay and trans issues have helped many of show's actors and actresses understand the nuances of the LGBT community.

"I've never had a big angle on [LGBT issues] until actually I met Laverne, really, because she's a public speaker and she's amazing. You can really learn a lot from her," said Manning, whose new film "Cleveland Abduction" airs on Lifetime May 2nd.

As Manning explained, the cast would often sit with Cox to listen to her thoughts on various LGBTQ issues.

"Our minds would be blown, just to know how complicated it all is," Manning told told co-hosts Roy Sekoff and Marc Lamont Hill.

Bust open a bottle of Pimm's -- the second royal baby has arrived! Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, gave birth to a little girl Saturday at St. Mary's Hospital, Kensington Palace confirmed.

Pictures of the new princess emerged on Saturday evening:

This is the second child for the duchess and Prince William, who welcomed Prince George in July 2013 (to much fanfare). The palace announced that the couple was expecting back in September, long after media outlets began buzzing that baby number two was on the way months after George's birth.

Surprisingly, the duke and duchess' second bundle of joy arrived past its due date of April 2015.

While pregnant with her second child, Kate suffered hyperemesis gravidarum, a severe form of morning sickness, which she experienced during her first pregnancy. The duchess received treatment by doctors at home in Kensington Palace and managed to resume her busy schedule of royal engagements, even making a visit stateside.

The new baby is officially fourth in line to the throne, effectively bumping her uncle, Prince Harry, down to fifth. (Yes, daughters can now ascend the English throne).

Now that there's an "heir and a spare," Prince George finally has a playmate -- just like his dad had with Prince Harry, who is only two years younger than Will. The new baby and George are even closer in age, just 21 months apart. Judging by Georgie's solo baby photos, one can only imagine how adorable the sibling pics are going to be.

The world has yet to catch the first glimpse of the second royal baby and her mum or even learn the tyke's name, so stay tuned for updates!

Ruth Rendell, Best-Selling Crime Writer, Dies At 85

0
0

LONDON (AP) — Prolific crime and mystery writer Ruth Rendell, perhaps best known for her Chief Inspector Wexford novels, died Saturday, said her publisher, Penguin Random House. She was 85.

The cause of death was not announced, but Rendell had suffered a serious stroke in January.

She was one of Britain's most popular crime novelists and authored dozens of books, including many written under the pen name Barbara Vine.

Rendell was a member of the House of Lords who had received wide recognition and many awards throughout her long career. Her Inspector Wexford series was made into a popular TV series, winning her many new fans and accolades.

She began her literary efforts by writing some "very bad" novels that were never published, she told The Associated Press in a 2005 interview.

After these false starts, she found that "suspense and a sort of tension and a sort of mystery was my forte."

Once she found her way, Rendell produced novels at an astonishing pace — more than 60 books over four decades, including 20 featuring Chief Inspector Wexford.

She brought to the classic mystery a psychological depth that gave readers unusual access to the emotional makeup of seemingly ordinary people capable of foul deeds.

Rendell lived in recent years in the scenic Little Venice neighborhood of London, which is known for its canals and colorful houseboats, but the pleasant surroundings did not alter her hard-eyed view of human nature.

"I don't think the world is a particularly pleasant place," said Rendell. "It is, of course, for some people. But it is a hard place, and I don't think it's being cynical to say that."

The author was appointed to the House of Lords by Prime Minister Tony Blair's Labour government in 1997, and she spent many afternoons attending sessions in Parliament after she had finished her morning writing sessions. Her official title was Baroness Rendell of Babergh.

Rendell was conscious of the strong feelings many of her readers had for the fictional character.

"With a series character like Wexford, people do regard him as a real person that they become extremely attached to," she says. "Women have written to me over the years and said that they were in love with him and would I kill his wife because they'd like to marry him."

Rendell told The Independent newspaper in 2014 that her personal hero was South African Bishop Desmond Tutu "because he's such a good man and he's had a hard life and always looks so happy."

The same year, she told an audience at the Cheltenham Literary Festival that she shied away from writing about child murder for fear that writing about it might in some way show criminals how to do it.

"I would rather not be involved, rather not be responsible," she said.

The same concerns kept her from writing about cruelty to animals, she said.

She would spend long hours walking in London, taking in the sights and conversations and forming impressions for her book, and also was an opera fan.

Rendell's husband, Donald Rendell, died in 1999.

Steve Grand Gets Stripped Down By Davey Wavey To Prove He's Not A Piece Of Meat

In this tongue-in-cheek clip, gay Internet personality Davey Wavey gets singer-songwriter Steve Grand to strip off his shirt and get oiled up. It turns out, however, that he's just trying to prove a point.

"I think you're super talented, I think you're an amazing person," an enthusiastic Davey Wavey, who has no qualms about helping Grand peel off his flannel, quips. "But I am sick and tired of the way that you're always exploited and you're always sexualized in media ... I think that we need to show people at home how they parade you around without your shirt on."

Grand, who rose to fame after the video for his first tune, "All-American Boy," went viral, is no stranger to baring his bod. Last year, the Chicago-based out star took a chilly plunge into Lake Superior wearing nothing but a smile for the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, and later shared a photo and video of the experience with his fans.

After a massively successful Kickstarter campaign, Grand released his debut album, also titled "All-American Boy," in March.

7 Royal Baby Name Top Contenders

0
0
Yay! It’s a girl. Now that the new royal daughter is here, we can focus completely on her name.  Will it be Alice, a favorite with bookmakers? Diana, the crowd-pleasing choice? Elizabeth, the most royal name of all? Or maybe something completely different? Here, the seven top contenders:

Alexandra

Alexander was said to be the Duchess of Cambridge’s first choice for her older son’s name, which ended up in middle place.  So her preference may predominate this time with Alexandra as a first name for a daughter.  There was a Queen Alexandra, consort of Edward VII, who ruled in the early 20th century.  Queen Elizabeth II and several other royals bear Alexandra as a middle name.

Alice

The name of Queen Victoria’s second daughter, the princess who shocked her mother by breastfeeding her baby, is a favorite with Britain’s betting public.  Alice is a sweet and pretty classic that is currently considered ultra-stylish in England, where it’s in the Top 50, and is also rising in popularity in the U.S.  Alice is the name of Prince Philip’s mother, Prince William’s great-grandmother.

Charlotte

Charlotte would be a top pick for the name of a little princess.  It’s a feminization of Charles, the name of the baby’s grandfather, and is also related to the name of Catherine’s mother, Carole -- plus it's the middle name of Catherine's sister, Pippa.  Queen Charlotte was the cultivated wife of George III, who also had a daughter named Charlotte. Runner-up is another Charles feminization: Caroline.

Diana

Diana would be a crowd-pleasing favorite, though it’s unlikely to be a choice that pleases the Royal Family. Diana is the name of the Roman moon goddess, also goddess of the hunt. And of course the name of Prince William’s mother.

Elizabeth

It seems a no-brainer that Elizabeth, the name of the current queen and the baby’s great-grandmother (as well as that of her great-GREAT-grandmother), would be in there somewhere. But in first, second, third, or even fourth place? Elizabeth is also the Duchess’s middle name.

Mary

Mary is a so-far-out-it’s-in vintage choice, one of our favorites had the couple’s first child been a girl.  We think Mary may suit their taste for traditional-with-a-twist.  With George, they’ve shown they’re not afraid to dust off a once-fusty name, and they may similarly polish up the image of Mary.  Mary was the name of two reigning queens and of three daughters of reigning monarchs; it’s one of Queen Elizabeth’s middle names.

Victoria

One of the most likely choices, Victoria is the name of one of the most famous queens in British history, who ruled through most of the 19th century.   While embodying history and strength, the name continues to feel contemporary, a la friend of the royals Victoria Beckham.  But don’t look for her to be nicknamed Tori, or even Vicki.

Anna Faris Fell For Chris Pratt After Discovering His Dead Bug Collection

0

These days, Chris Pratt is America's heartthrob. But his wife, Anna Faris, says she fell for the actor for a pretty unlikely reason.

On "The Late Late Show with James Corden" earlier this week, Faris told the host that she realized she'd really met someone special when she discovered Pratt's dead bug collection.

"I had a bug collection and ... when Chris and I first started dating he invited me over to his apartment and he had, also, a dead bug collection," she said.

"Wow," Corden chimed in. "What are the chances?"

"That's how I felt!" she said "So much so that I started to cry."

In Chris Pratt's Reddit AMA last week, the star revealed that he, too, feels he is married to his soulmate.

"Anna and I are meant to be together," he said. "Our relationship has made me believe in divine intervention and destiny."

On "The Late Late Show," Corden suggested to Faris that things between her and Pratt might have gotten a little R-rated after revelation of the dead bug collections.

"I was like, I've met the man of my dreams," Faris said. "We both have dead bug collections."

"'Make out' was a gentle way to put it," she added.

The Spice Girls Just Reunited And It Will Seriously Spice Up Your Life

Stop right now, thank you very much -- the Spice Girls just reunited, and it was amazing!

Saturday was David Beckham's birthday, thus the perfect occasion to get (almost all) of Victoria Beckham's former girl band members together.

Posh Spice was joined by Geri Halliwell, Melanie Chisholm and Emma Bunton (sadly, no Scary Spice in sight) to celebrate the soccer star's 40th birthday in Marrakech, Morocco. The group did have a fifth honorary member, however, when Eva Longoria joined for photos.

Watch them get down, get deeper and down (because it's) Saturday night.

Too much is never enough.

Never give up on the good times, amiright?

Here's to hoping a 20th anniversary Spice Girls reunion happens soon.

'SNL' Mocks Superhero Sexism With 'Black Widow' Rom-Com Trailer

Marvel has recently come under fire for its allegedly sexist treatment of its character Black Widow, played by Scarlett Johansson in "Avengers: Age of Ultron." But, thanks to "Saturday Night Live," we now finally have the spinoff movie Black Widow fans deserve -- because Marvel totally "gets women," you guys.

In the spoof trailer, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) has everything going for her, namely an internship at a fashion magazine and a bunch of friends to order takeout with. But it wouldn't be a rom-com if she didn't happen to stumble upon the quirky, dog-walking Ultron at a park and fall hopelessly in love with him. (Like, so in love that she accidentally puts ketchup on her cereal, despite her super powers.)
