Tig Notaro's Powerful Message About Learning To Embrace The Scars From Her Double Mastectomy

$

Tig Notaro has never been afraid to tackle her cancer head on.

Her now-legendary 2012 stand-up set -- which she performed days after she got a breast cancer diagnosis -- brought Louis C.K. to tears, then in 2014 she performed topless and bared the scars from her double mastectomy. The comedian told "The HuffPost Show" on Friday why exposing and owning her body was so meaningful:

I took my shirt off because it dawned on me how taboo it is to be topless, whether you have a double mastectomy or not, as a woman. And I was thinking how I had cancer, so that's a big deal, but having scars is not. And all it is is that my body healed. My skin healed. I don't have nipples. I just have two scars across my chest. But if I had a scar on my face, I would hope nobody would ask me to wear a bag over my head. It's really just a very simple thing. It's not a big deal. And the audience told me that when I took my shirt off, their heads exploded, and then 10 seconds later, they completely forgot and were listening to my stand-up.

Notaro's new comedy special, "Knock Knock, It's Tig Notaro," premieres April 17 on Showtime.

5 Myths About 'The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air' Debunked By DJ Jazzy Jeff

Prepare to have your world flipped, turned upside down.

"The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" came into our lives in 1990, and 25 years later, we're still obsessed. It was the '90s show you had to watch. Even today, its theme song sparks instant sing-a-longs all over the world, and the show just seems to get more and more popular.

But despite what Smith's character might say in the show, popularity can have its downsides. Over the years, some stories about the show have been passed along as fact even though they're missing important details or are completely made up. While talking with HuffPost Entertainment about the Red Bull Thre3style DJ competition, "Fresh Prince" cast member DJ Jazzy Jeff, aka Jeffrey Townes, also helped clear up fact from fiction.

If you'd like to take a minute, just sit right there, here are 5 huge myths about "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air":

Myth 1. Producer Quincy Jones is the cab driver.
tv show gifs
Image: YouTube

The Real Story:
There's a popular rumor online that the cabbie who picks up Will Smith in the opening credits was producer Quincy Jones. This rumor is so widely reported as fact that there's even "visual evidence" (as seen in the image):

Image: Imgur

Townes gives the "fact" a definitive "no," saying, "No way, shape or form. Another urban legend."

According to Townes, there's also another casting rumor to clear up. Apparently, the mom in the "Parents Just Don't Understand" video and the "Fresh Prince" intro are not the same person, despite claims.

Myth 2. The scene where Jazz gets kicked out of the house was shot only once to save money.

Image: YouTube

The Real Story:
Jazz's famous scene was actually shot multiple times, but Townes said after a while, he couldn't take the bruises. The actor explains, "When I did it maybe the third or fourth time, because every time you shoot it to get a take you probably have to do it about 40 times. Literally, black and blue by the time they say, 'We got it.' And it got so bad the last time, and I was like, 'I can't do this. I'm not a stuntman. I can't do it.'"

Townes says that's the real reason the show started using the same clip over and over, and it seemed to work out. "Like, it became a joke," he said.

Myth 3. The show is just a metaphor for Heaven, and Will is actually dead.

The Real Story:
A widely accepted theory about the "Fresh Prince" is that the show was just a metaphor for what Heaven is like, and Will actually died in the playground fight he mentions in the theme song.

Townes shot the theory down, but said he appreciated the fans who came up with it. "It’s just, that’s so far-fetched you just laugh," he said. The actor later added, "To see someone take all of that stuff and almost create a whole world around it, you’re kind of like, 'Wow, it wasn’t that deep, but that’s amazing that their brain took it there.'"

Townes also said, despite the fact that the theme song seems semi-autobiographical, the fight Smith mentions in it never actually happened. "Will Smith is just a great storyteller," said Townes.

Myth 4. The show was only created because of Will Smith's financial trouble.

The Real Story:
It's widely known that Smith was in debt at the time NBC offered him a sitcom. Smith even explained the story to James Lipton on "Inside the Actors Studio":

I kinda spun out for a little bit, and, um, I got a call from the IRS. And I wasn't -- they said I was evading my taxes. I wasn't evading 'um. I just wasn't paying 'um.

Though Smith's financial situation was incentive for doing a show, a huge reason "Fresh Prince" got made was the "Parents Just Don't Understand" video. Townes explained that after seeing the video, the eventual producers thought "[Smith] might be able to pull this TV show off."

Townes says everything happened very quickly: "People loved it. They said, 'Hey let’s do the TV show.' They shot the TV show. Then it became a humongous success. But, kind of like back then sometimes rap videos were your audition reel. You know? And you didn’t even know it."

Myth 5. Will and Jazz came up with that famous handshake.

Image: Tumblr

The Real Story:
Townes gives all the credit for the show's famous handshake to a backup dancer on the DJ Jazzy Jeff and "Fresh Prince" tour: "His name is Mike Barr. [He] started doing the handshake, and that became our tour handshake. And what happened was it was a thing that I greeted Will [with] on the show. We just did the handshake that we would do on tour ... and it actually became a cultural phenomenon."

Though there are the rare instances you might see Smith do the handshake with others, Townes says for the most part, they won't do it with people who weren't on the tour. "I can’t, like, if you’re not Will," he said. Townes compared it to secret handshakes in sororities and fraternities, saying, "You can't do that unless you’ve gone through the initiation."

And that's really how he became the prince of a town called Bel-Air.

5 Stories You've Never Heard Before About Heath Ledger As The Joker

$

Legendary makeup artist John Caglione Jr. worked closely with Heath Ledger over the course of shooting "The Dark Knight," helping the actor transform into the role that would posthumously win him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Caglione had his work cut out for him: Tasked with creating a terrifying Joker that would be distinct from all previous iterations, Caglione had to maintain Christopher Nolan's wishes for the character to be "dirty" and "realistic." The result, we all know by now, is both haunting and iconic.

Saturday, April 4, would have been Ledger's birthday. In his honor, we give you behind-the-scenes stories about his memorable onscreen transformation.

1. Multiple "cleaner" versions of The Joker makeup existed before the rougher look was found.

Caglione initially started out trying to make The Joker "very clean" and did some sketches and makeup tests with Ledger, crafting a look that ended up much different than the final face. Increasingly, Ledger and Caglione attempted to degrade the face, but in multiple iterations "it still looked very much like a makeup guy did it." Caglione explained to HuffPost what was going through his head:

As a makeup artist you want it to be perfect, but it had to be imperfect for the character ... And to me it looked like, you know, I would never work again. It was like the worst makeup ever. It was really messed up looking and I just thought, "Oh my god, this could be really terrible for me."

Continuing on, Caglione talked about the early days of when they settled on the rougher look and joked, "There were days when I would look at it and I'd be like, 'Oh, my career is over.'" Of course, the look, which became based around a character who would maybe "sleep in his makeup for a week," ended up working out and Caglione was nominated for an Academy Award.

It should also be noted that the story of Ledger designing the face with department store cosmetics may just be a legend. Caglione said that he "wasn't aware of that" and that Ledger never showed him designs or pictures.

2. The breakthrough for designing the face was when Nolan shared Francis Bacon paintings.

1160664

Nolan has expressed a deep interest with Francis Bacon's paintings in the past and in 2013 during a video made by the Tate Museum, Nolan talked in length about how the paintings inspired The Joker's look.

Specifically, one of Bacon's triptychs (seen above) influenced Nolan's vision for The Joker as he was particularly struck by the contrast of the deformed face against the black background.

In the conversation with HuffPost, Caglione also talked about how Nolan used the Bacon paintings to finalize The Joker face. "I remember Chris bringing in a book on Francis Bacon paintings and it was some really great images, really distorted images and that was kind of our bible and we would go off that. That was an inspiration."

3. Ledger would consistently skateboard around set wearing the full costume and makeup.

TK TK gifs

While shooting was taking place in Chicago, the makeup trailer ended up being at the top of a hill relative to where "The Dark Knight" was filming at Lower Wacker Drive. Because of the hill, Heath Ledger was able to quickly hop on a skateboard and roll down to set. Caglione said "he'd have his costume and makeup on" and "just fool around" with his skateboard.

Caglione explained that when Ledger wasn't filming a scene, "he was just himself" and "even in the makeup he'd ride his skateboard to set and goof around and smoke cigarettes. It would not be in character." Calgione continued, "You could come up to him and hang out with him with the makeup on and the costume and he was Heath."

The skateboarding might have been part of Ledger's relaxed vibe on set as Caglione said, "he was just so cool and not freaked out by the scope of the film." Caglione -- who has worked with many award-winning actors such as Al Pacino and Johnny Depp -- counted Ledger as one of the greats partly for his ability to relax and not let the intense nature of roles overwhelm him.

"Not only was he relaxed or trying to relax. But he was making other people around him relax. That's really true with these great actors. You relax and you're doing your best," said Caglione.

4. At the beginning and end of essentially every workday, Ledger would give a round of bear hugs. He'd still goof around and be congenial while dressed as The Joker.

In a previous interview with Movie Geeks United!, Caglione revealed that Ledger would almost always give big bear hugs to all the makeup artists, actors and other miscellaneous crew members who were there at the beginning and end of his days on set.

"He'd come in and give us big hugs in the morning, that's one thing that always happened," Caglione further told HuffPost. People in the crew could interact with Ledger dressed as The Joker, and they wouldn't get anything remotely close to resembling the villain. "He always was in good humor," said Caglione. "Never lost it or anything like that. Never was mean to anyone. [As] The Joker, being in character."

5. Ledger would carry around The Joker diary so that he could switch into the character once on film.

TK TK gifs

Much curiosity surrounds what was in Ledger's "Joker Diary," the sort of scrapbook in which Ledger would compile horrific news stories, drawings and other creepy triggers.

Caglione talked how Ledger would use the diary on set, saying that the actor carried it with him "a lot" and it "just helped him put him in a certain place in his head."

Apparently at the end of shooting, Ledger wrote the words, "BYE BYE," over the last page of the diary.

"I'm glad I had a chance to know him."

1160664

"He made it look easy," said Caglione, who only had great things to say about his interactions with the late actor.

Near the end of the interview, Caglione talked about his admiration of Ledger's ability to stay so cool and calm and friendly throughout filming despite playing the memorably villainous role. Caglione admitted that he was "more of a nervous wreck" than Ledger ever was. "He always was in good humor."

After making a string of controversial comments in recent months and gracing the April cover of Playboy, Azealia Banks also landed the cover of the latest issue of Billboard, which features the Harlem rapper revealing some of her sexual fantasies and conquests.

When asked about her thoughts on President Barack Obama, Banks professed: "He’s so fine. Those big-ass white teeth and ears hanging off his head? I’m like, ‘Oh my god, I want to f*** the president,’” she said, before adding, "I sleep with my security guards. I love security guards. They're these big meathead bald white guys with blue eyes.”

“And I have had sex with a lot of my female friends," she continued. "It's a proximity thing. It's why I am going to call my next record 'Business and Pleasure,' because I'm always mixing the two." The 23-year-old went on to admit how much she has to “tone it down” in order to attract a really smart man who makes her laugh.

Aside mixing business with pleasure, last November, Banks released her long-delayed debut album, “Broke With Expensive Taste,” which debuted at No. 2 on Billboard’s Rap Albums charts and at No. 3 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.

Khloe Kardashian opened up about her brother Rob's personal struggles as she took the red carpet to promote the Kardashian Beauty hair care line in Beverly Hills on Thursday.

The 30-year-old told Maria Menounos of E! News that her younger brother is making some improvements, including becoming more physically active.

"Rob definitely has his ups and downs, and he's been struggling for the past year and a half, maybe two years, which I think we've all had those times in our life," the "Keeping Up With The Kardashians" star said.

"For the last week, he's been doing better, but I want Rob to do good consistently forever. So right now I'm really proud of him. He's been working out a little and trying to get his groove back. And he acknowledges it -- he's aware that he's very introverted and of course not the way he used to be," she explained.

Khloe Kardashian told E! about the tragic life events that could be the reason for Rob Kardashian's issues.

"It's not just one thing. I think it's a ton of things. The loss of my father, he's never really dealt with -- he went straight into college after that happened and kind of pushed everything aside and manifested himself in college and did so well and succeeded in school ... Also, losing Lamar in his life was a big thing for him because he lost his next father-slash-brother figure," she said, referencing her ex-husband Lamar Odom.

Rob Kardashian made headlines in March for his now-deleted Instagram post, in which he likened his sister Kim Kardashian to "the bitch from 'Gone Girl.'" In a recent clip from "Keeping Up With The Kardashians," an emotional Kim told her mother, Kris Jenner, "Everyone licks Rob's ass and does whatever he says. It's just like, at some point you just have to give it up. We all make his life so easy."

'SNL' Spoofed Church Of Scientology With A Scathing Fake Ad

Alex Gibney's Scientology documentary "Going Clear" premiered on HBO last week, unveiling a slew of shocking allegations against the Church and previously unknown stories about the celebrities at its center. But just in case you missed the film, "Saturday Night Live" mocked the Church with a scathing fake ad.

"SNL" ran an old music video for the obviously made-up Church of Neurotology, in which members sing about Diametrics, clearly a spoof on L. Ron Hubbard's Dianetics. As they sing, the updated advertisement reveals what has happened to the members since the fake 1990 music video, alluding to the allegations of abuse and missing members referenced in Gibney's doc.

The Church of Scientology has spoken out against "Going Clear" in an official statement you can read here.

CLARIFICATION: The headline of this story has been updated to clarify that the "SNL" ad spoofed the Church of Scientology, not the "Going Clear" documentary.
