EXPLICIT PHOTOS: On Fur-Free Friday, A Look Back At Celebs Who've Stripped Down For Animal Rights

Black Friday may be American retail's biggest shopping day of the year, but the day after Thanksgiving also marks Fur-Free Friday.

With hundreds of fur-free PETA protests scheduled around the world this year, animals rights activists will tout the message that wearing fur fuels a deadly and inhumane industry that is far from glamorous.

**Scroll down for EXPLICIT photos of past anti-fur PETA ads**

In 2010 the U.S. retail fur sales hit $1.3 billion, a 3.1% increase from 2009, according to the Fur Information Council Of America.

The Humane Society writes, "On fur factory farms around the world, millions of raccoon dogs, rabbits, foxes, mink, chinchillas, and other animals spend their lives in wire cages, only to be killed by anal electrocution, by neck-breaking, or in gas chambers."

PETA writes on its website:

When people learn that millions of innocent animals are beaten, boiled, hanged, and electrocuted for their fur every year; that each fur coat, each piece of fur lining or fur trim, and each fur cat toy represents the intense suffering of dozens of animals; and that furriers intentionally mislabel the fur of cats and dogs as fur from other species or as faux fur -- then every decent human being will want to go fur-free.

To raise the profile of the anti-fur message, PETA's iconic campaign, "I'd Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur" has attracted a number of high profile celebrities to strip down in support of animal rights. Elisabetta Canalis is one of the most recent and memorable celebrities to bare it all for the animal rights organization.

With her billboards posted in Milan since September, Canalis explained to PETA her reason for posing nude:

"That is what is required to keep people's attention on such a brutal practice," she said. "These poor animals are electrocuted, skinned alive, drowned, and bludgeoned just for the sake of fashion."

Other eyebrow-raising images of celebrities posing for PETA include Khloe Kardashian's "I'd Rather Go Naked" ad, Chad Ochocinco's "Ink Not Mink" ad and Laura Vandervoort's "What Skin Are You In?" ad.

If you're heading to the malls this Black Friday, many would suggest skipping the animal skinned fashion in exchange for some cruelty-free clothing instead.

In celebration of Fur-Free Friday, see some of PETA's most memorable anti-fur ads below (WARNING: Some images may be considered explicit and NSFW):

PHOTO: Why Is Nicolas Cage On A Serbian Biology Textbook?

Nicolas Cage has a strange habit of showing up in odd places -- and we're not talking about some of his recent movie choices, though "Drive Angry" wasn't his best decision.

In 1987, Cage and Holly Hunter starred in "Raising Arizona," the Coen Brothers comedy about an ex-con and a police officer who get married. Oddly enough, as pointed out by Twitter user @Zekasta and picked up by Belgraded.com and then Reddit, a shot from the film, complete with a little baby, ended up on the cover of a Serbian 8th grade biology textbook.

The ironic part? The baby wasn't even theirs; they stole it from the family of a big shot businessman near their Arizona home.

This recalls an episode earlier this fall, when a portrait of a Civil War soldier who looked exactly like Cage was posted on the web.

The Best Black Friday Movies & TV Shows To Buy

$

In search of the best flicks and shows to gift this year? We've got you covered.

Sure, you're eager to grab one of those massive and massively discounted TVs that the big box retailers are selling this year, but once you fight off your neighbors and their grandmothers for the big screen prize, you've got to actually have something to watch on it. TV these days is a toss up -- who wants to watch even more reality programming? -- and so why not cut to the good stuff?

Here's a guide to the top DVD/Blu-Ray releases that your whole family can enjoy (with some fun for you, too). Just favorite place or print out this list, and let the buying begin. You can grab these at stores, or, at online retails such as Amazon.com.

Adults:
"Beginners": This coming out story of a 75-year old man and his renewed relationship with his son was loved by critics, and has generated Oscar buzz for star Christopher Plummer. It's cut $10 in price on Amazon, making it $18.49 for a DVD that speaks to generations.

"Half Nelson": Everyone is saying that Ryan Gosling is having a breakout year, with three big films in 2011 (as well as last fall's "Blue Valentine") but he's been in the acting game since he was a pre-teen. In fact, he was nominated for an Oscar for his lead role in this inner city teacher drama. Check it out and immediately one-up all those web meme-ers who think life began at "The Notebook." It's up for $6.87 on DVD at Amazon.

"Bridesmaids": We've always known Kristen Wiig is hilarious, but her star truly got to shine on an international level with the release of this blockbuster ladies' comedy. But don't let the name lead you astray; men and women both loved this movie, which gets gross, awkward and wild in equal measures. The DVD is going for $5.99 on Amazon.com.

"Community": There's been an internet outcry at the news that NBC is benching (for now) the cult comedy "Community," and for good reason: it's just about the smartest show out there. Joel McHale, Donald Glover, Chevy Chase and Alison Brie, amongst others, star in this series about a wacky community college and all the shenanigans that transpire there. With episodes that range from claymation to space adventures in 80s-era KFC trucks, it'll be the most unique thing you've seen on TV. All of season two will cost just $11.99 on Amazon.

"Crazy, Stupid, Love.": Out this week, this Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling-starring romantic comedy touched three generations of family, bringing laughs and glitzy co-stars such as Emma Stone, Julianne Moore, Maris Tomei and newcomer Analeigh Tipton. Today, $9.99 for the DVD and $11.99 for the Blu-Ray.

"Mad Men": Pushed back by AMC until this January, you'll have time for a crash course in the Emmy-winning drama that has made Jon Hamm an international star. Start at season one for just $12.49 on DVD.

"The Tree of Life": The big winner at Cannes, this Terrence Malick-directed meditation on family and earth will astound you with its gorgeous imagery, strong performance from Brad Pitt and amazing breakout from 2011's it-girl, Jessica Chastain. You can get a Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital Copy 3-pack for $24.99.

The Whole Family:

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2": Fresh out just in time for the shopping holiday, this epic franchise wrap-up astounded moviegoers across the world. See Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint all grown up and facing down Voldemort in one final showdown. You can get it for $6.99 on DVD on Amazon.

"The Muppet Movie": As you take the family to see the Jason Segel-driven big screen revamp, why not show your kids the original film? They'll better understand the in-jokes from the new one, and it's delightful and charming on its own, too. Have it for $11.99 on Amazon.

"X-Men: First Class": After a rough couple sequels, "First Class," the 60s-set origin story reboot, was a masterclass and needed revival for the mutant franchise. Michael Fassbender, as Magneto, gives a fantastic performance, as does James McAvoy, who took on the role of pre-paralyzation Professor X. Just $9.99 for a Blu-Ray on Amazon.

"The Dark Knight": Sure, it's a few years old now, but with next year's epic followup, "The Dark Knight Rises," already getting fans geeked up, you've got to make sure you're all caught up on the franchise. How about a refresher on a film that won Heath Ledger a post-humous Oscar for his mind-bending turn as the Joker? Only $13.99 at Amazon -- or, if you buy by 11 am EST, just $4.99.

"Captain America": Surprisingly well-done film debut for the Cap. Set in World War II, we see skinny Steve Rogers (a digitally trimmed version of Chris Evans) go from weakling to international hero with the injection of secret serum. You'll see him in next summer's "The Avengers," so it's good to make sure you know how it all began. $17.99 on Amazon for the DVD, $19.99 for the Blu-Ray.

"Arrested Development": The news that Netflix will bring the series back in 2013 was met with thunderous excitement, as this beloved cult hit still stokes passion in its fans, six years after it was canceled by Fox. You can get the complete, three season series of the Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, Portia de Rossi and Jeffrey Tambor-starring sitcom for just $34.99.

"Modern Family": The current torch-bearer for hit wacky family sitcom, this ensemble comedy has won Best Comedy Series at the Emmys two years in a row. With amazing performances from Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Eric Stonestreet, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Ed O'Neill and Sofia Vergara, you'll know why. The first season is just $12.99 at Amazon, as is the second season.

"Submarine": This indie English comedy about a boy too smart for his age features an impeccable script and a breakout performance from star Craig Roberts. You may not have gotten to see it in theaters, but make sure you catch it at home. It's worth the $18.49 for the DVD.

For the Kids:

"Monte Carlo": Fan favorite teen star Selena Gomez leads the cast in this wish-fulfillment tale of a few traveling friends who get whisked away to romance and splendor while visiting Europe. Amazon has it for $15.49 on DVD.

"Winnie the Pooh": A delightful big screen return for everyone's favorite stuffed, hungry bear, it's a light and breezy film that can introduce the 100 Acre Woods to a whole new generation. $17.99 for the DVD on Amazon.

"Justin Bieber: Never Say Never": If you have a teenage daughter and somehow don't already have this, you'll probably be a hero for bringing home the Bieb and his inspirational tale of going from small town Canadian busker to international hair-flipping sensation. And only for $11.49 on DVD.

We speculated that the infamous Kim Kardashian-Kris Humpries divorce could be the final nail in the koffin of the Kardashian empire and now it looks like that theory wasn't for naught.

This year, we will not be going to the Kardashian's for the holidays.

According to The NY Post, the camera-friendly family has nixed their idea of a Kardashian Kristmas special on E!, in light of recent events.

Apparently, besides Kim's very messy split, the rest of the klan just has "too many commitments" this holiday season to film the show together.

What do you think of the Kardashians sitting out this Christmas? Is it a sign of things to come?

Hollywood Sending Evil Message?

While conservatives like to knock Hollywood for its supposed liberal bent, one columnist in England thinks that its films are promoting quite the opposite viewpoint.

Writing for the Guardian, Rick Moody jumps off comic and film writer/director Frank Miller's harsh condemnation of Occupy Wall Street and argues that movies promote a "cryptofascist" agenda.

"Miller's hard-right, pro-military point of view is not only accounted for in his own work, but in the larger project of mainstream Hollywood cinema," Moody writes. "American movies, in the main, often agree with Frank Miller, that endless war against a ruthless enemy is good, and military service is good, that killing makes you a man, that capitalism must prevail, that if you would just get a job (preferably a corporate job, for all honest work is corporate) you would quit complaining."

Using action heroes and noted conservatives such as Chuck Norris, Clint Eastwood, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone as examples, Moody also points to more recent movies, such as "300" -- a Miller creation -- and the long line of comic book movies, such as "Captain America" and "X-Men," as hiding a moralist, might is right agenda in its explosions and visual smorgasbord.

"In these cases, the moral framework of the product is just as simplistic as in action films, if not more so, and the triumph of the social order is just as violent, and just as relentless, though the films are couched in a sugary glaze of graphics and "wow" moments that distract from ideological branding."

The coming release of multiple films about the capture and killing of Osama bin Laden, including one by Katherine Bigelow, will no doubt add to Moody's argument, as will the upcoming film, "Act of Valor," which stars real Navy SEALs and Jerry Bruckheimer's upcoming Navy SEALs project. Bigelow's movie will come out after the 2012 election after, paradoxically, Republicans objected to its airing.

Hollywood has long been a leader on social issues, such as gay rights, with films such as last year's Oscar-nominated "The Kids Are All Right" showing functional and loving families headed by gay parents. President Obama recently fundraised in Hollywood with some of the industry's biggest names.

James Bond Gets Surprising, Heartthrob British Star

Sam Mendes is wasting no time in shaking up the "James Bond" franchise.

According to BBC, the agent for British actor Ben Whishaw has confirmed that the 31-year old will appear in "Skyfall" as MI6 gadget guru Q, the tech wizard who supplies James Bond his always interesting gizmos. The casting will mark the first time that an actor playing Q is younger than the Bond star; Daniel Craig is 43 years old.

The role of Q was played for 36 years by Desmond Llewelyn, who first appeared in 1963's "From Russia With Love," and went on to star in every Bond film, aside from Roger Moore's bow in "Live and Let Live," until he passed away in 1999. Peter Burton played him as Major Boothroyd in 1962's "Dr. No," and John Cleese bookended by taking on the part in 2002's "Die Another Day."

Mendes, who promises an entirely original, non-book adventure for Craig in his third go round as 007.

Javier Bardem will be a villain, Naomi Harris will take on the character of Eve, Bérénice Marlohe is the next Bond Girl, Sévérine, Albert Finney will play Judi Dench's boss at British Intelligence, and Ralph Fiennes has some sort of role, as well.

Whishaw is best known in the UK for roles in TV series such as "The Hour" and "Criminal Justice," and has appeared in the Bob Dylan bio film "I'm Not There" and the big screen adaptation of "The Tempest."

Demi & Ashton Break Twitter Silence

Demi Moore has finally broken her Twitter silence, two weeks after the announcement that she and husband Ashton Kutcher would be divorcing.

The actress used a Thanksgiving Day message to make her return to the social media website, tweeting, "Why do we have only 1 day for giving thanks? Is that why so many people feel unappreciated? Make this 1 of 365 days of Thanksgiving!" Perhaps the 49-year-old was feeling thankful for her new-found freedom or maybe it is the support of friends and family at the start of this holiday season that has her feeling so vocal.

Moore announced that she and Kutcher would be ending their six year marriage on November 17th after months of speculation about Kutcher's alleged affairs. The most notable being a Las Vegas rendezvous with 24-year-old Sara Leal, during Kutcher and Moore's anniversary weekend in September.

Kutcher's first words on the split were 140+ characters saying, "I will forever cherish the time I spent with Demi. Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world and unfortunately sometimes they fail. Love and Light, AK"

Though they seem to have made a few attempts to mend the broken marriage, most recently seeking marriage counseling post-announcement, they seem to be headed down the road of separation.

The pair have always been active Twitter participants. Moore's Twitter handle is @MrsKutcher, despite speculation post-announcement that she'd be searching for a new one -- @DemiMoore is still available -- it looks like she'll be keeping @MrsKutcher, for the time being at least.

Both were once a very vocal tweeters, but both haven't used 140 characters to communicate with the world since November 17th. Just as his soon to be ex-wife did, Kutcher took to Twitter Thursday to express his gratitude. "I'm thankful for family, friends, you, & time to reach my potential. What are you thankful for? #thanksgiving."

Scene From 'Twilight' Causing Seizures In Theaters

"Twilight, Breaking Dawn: Part One" might be just a bit too sparkly for epilepsy sufferers.

Several people have reportedly developed seizures during the film’s infamous birthing scene, as red, black, and white flash across the screen.

In one case, a Sacramento-area man convulsed so violently that paramedics were called in, and the rest of the screening was canceled.

'Breaking Dawn' Giving Viewers Seizures

The number one movie in America is allegedly giving some viewers seizures.

"Breaking Dawn, Part 1," the first part of the "Twilight Saga" finale, contains a graphic birthing scene involving star Kristen Stewart and the violent delivery of her child. ABC reports that the flashing of colors and bright lights have caused multiple viewers to suffer from photosensitive epilepsy, including a Salt Lake City man who was, "mumbling and he was blinking on and off with his eyes," his wife told the news network.

During the build-up to "Breaking Dawn," Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and director Bill Condon promised that the birthing scene would be as graphic and dramatic as possible.

"I think within the confines of a PG-13 rating, I think we've got something that's pretty powerful," Condon told Box Office Magazine, saying the scene was like one out of a horror film. "And in terms of the birth, it was, 'Let's do it from Bella's point of view. Let's see whatever she can see.' Once you decide on an approach like that, it's amazing how powerful you can be without being overly explicit."

This is not the first film to allegedly cause seizures; in 2009, James Cameron's digital extravaganza, "Avatar," also reportedly caused some viewers to break into convulsions.

"Breaking Dawn, Part 1," made $138 million domestically last weekend and is estimated to win the Thanksgiving weekend box office as well.

Lady Gaga Lends Support To Toronto Teen's Anti-Bullying Campaign

Pop superstar Lady Gaga gave a high-profile boost to a Toronto student's efforts to end bullying on Friday.

Jacques St. Pierre, 17, is in Grade 12 and is student council president of the Etobicoke School of the Arts.

St. Pierre endured bullying during his elementary school years and wanted to do something to raise awareness about the problem.

"I got called the gay kid, the fag, because I liked to be in the school plays," he told CBC's Melanie Nagy. "I lost my best friend because he joined in with the bullies. It's not fun, I've been there, I've been bullied. Before that, I didn't know bullying could affect people so severely."

Motivated to do something about it, St. Pierre organized a school assembly with an anti-bullying theme. He also gathered pledges from fellow students, calling on them to agree to help combat the problem.

But he also sent dozens of emails to celebrities, asking them to give their support.

That's when he received an email he won't soon forget.

"The subject line said 'To Jacques from Lady Gaga,'" he told Nagy. "It said 'click on the link below to download the video for your assembly.' So no questions asked, Lady Gaga sent us a video. I watched it, and I started crying. I'm a huge fan. It's kind of embarrassing because I love her so much. I couldn't believe it."

In her video addressed to him, Lady Gaga praises St. Pierre for his work to combat bullying, particularly bullying directed at gay and lesbian students.

"I just wanted to tell you how proud I am of you for being such a strong advocate of the LGBT community in your school," she said. "There should be more little monsters like you.

"My father always saves all the fan letters that I receive and I read yours and wanted to send this video to you. It is important that we push the boundaries of love and acceptance."

Lady Gaga said it was important given the recent suicide of Jamey Rodemeyer, a Buffalo teen who committed suicide in September. One of his last tweets before he died was to Lady Gaga, who dedicated a song to him at one of her concerts.

Students react

Lady Gaga's message got a strong reaction from students at the school assembly.

"I'm starting to actually realize how big this problem is and I just want to make a difference now," said one male student.

"I love Lady Gaga and it means so much to me that she could do that for us and support us through this," said another.

St. Pierre said he was elated to receive such high-profile support.

"Young or old, people know who Lady Gaga is, because she's such a character and she does so much to stand up against bullying in any way she can. And someone as inspiring as her, taking 20 minutes out of her day to write down a speech, sit in front of a Teleprompter, get all made up and read it to us directly at our school. It's fantastic."

St. Pierre also got support from CBC comedian Rick Mercer, whose recent anti-bullying rant video on his show went viral after airing on the Rick Mercer Report. The video was played Friday during the assembly.

St. Pierre kept Gaga's contribution secret prior to the assembly, which featured singing, dancing and a broadcast of her video.

"Last year when the It Gets Better project started on YouTube, I was inspired by all the thousands of videos that were put online by celebrities, politicians and regular people," said St. Pierre.

"And I wanted to do something like that, so I ran for student council president and my campaign for that was to host an assembly about equality and anti-bullying and spread the message that everybody should be loved and accepted no matter what or who they are."

Jennifer Lopez Spends Thanksgiving With Casper Smart

It looks like Jennifer Lopez had a happy Hawaiian holiday.

The singer reportedly spent Thanksgiving Day with backup dancer and rumored new beau, Casper Smart, as well as her two children, twins Max and Emme, on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, according to Radaronline.com.

Paparazzi spotted JLo on the beach with her 3-year-old twins during an afternoon stroll Thursday, and a source tells UsWeekly the foursome were getting along famously. "Casper was great with the kids. He was twirling them around and doing flips with Emme and she seemed very comfortable with him."

Lopez split from husband Marc Anthony -- and father of Max and Emme -- in September, and since their separation Lopez has already been romantically linked to Bradley Cooper and most recently Smart.

The pair apparently packed on the PDA at the after-party for the American Music Awards, hanging out in a private booth for the night.

Looks like things might be getting serious for Lopez and her new man.

Harvey Weinstein: How Marilyn Monroe Got Her Groove, and How Dad Became Cool

$
0
0

The council of foreign relations is the nickname we have given the weekly meeting between my three very hip, very cool daughters and their very unhip, uncool dad. Once a week, school or business is torpedoed and we meet in a restaurant (I have a fourth daughter, but at 14 months she would destroy any restaurant because she has more destructive moves than Jackie Chan and is way faster).

About a year ago, my mother, their grandmother, the infamous Miriam Weinstein, decided to drop by. Miriam of course, is the one we named Miramax after. By the way, when Disney kept the name Miramax, I always thought my mom was going to take on Michael Eisner. To her threats, Bob and I always said "you can't do that" and she said, "yes I can, I'm right and he's wrong, and that name is synonymous with a certain kind of filmmaking. And your father. And besides, if they take me into custody, I'll get off".

Bob and I replied, "how would you get off?"

"Because I know Bert Fields and David Boies", she replied. That in a nutshell is Miriam. Lest anyone wonder where Bob and I get it from. As the conversation progressed my daughters complained about too much homework they had and how tough their teachers were. Of course I'm on their side and I tell them that I think homework is way overrated.

Then, as the evening ended, Miriam asked me, "why are you making a movie about Marilyn Monroe? Hasn't everything been said on that subject already?" Whereupon, I tell my mom that a number of years ago I had read two books by Colin Clark. Those being The Prince, the Showgirl, and Me and My Week with Marilyn; both books about his experience making the movie when she came to London in 1956 and also detailing his fairytale romance and magical week with her. This all happened because her husband, Arthur Miller had an argument with her and left her in the middle of their honeymoon. As I progressed the story, Miriam was stunned. "I thought there were three main people in her life, the agent, what was his name?", she continued, "oh yeah Johnny Hyde, Joe DiMaggio and Arthur Miller. Who is this Colin Clark?"

I told Mom and the kids that sometimes movies are snapshots of little incidents. Actual moments in time that give you insight into a character. My daughters said dad, you made a movie like that, bringing up The King's Speech, to which I replied, yes, a footnote with giant implications. The story of the king of England who stuttered and overcame his speech impediment. Here, I told my gang, was another snapshot. A beautiful, but mature Marilyn Monroe at age 30, allowing herself to be innocent for once swept away by a younger man. My middle daughter then said, it reminded her of Roman Holiday.

Now in my house, Roman Holiday holds a special place. My daughters have always had a phobia of black and white movies. Black and white to them meant old. In fact, black and white to them meant very old, the kind of movies their dad would watch. The only thing worse than black and white to them was subtitles.

So one night, I said to them that if they could make it through this old movie, I'd take them all to the mall and buy them each a gift at their favorite store. The movie was Roman Holiday. They loved the movie so much they watched it again and gave me a pass at the mall. Of course, Roman Holiday is the story of a young princess, played by Audrey Hepburn, who sneaks out the palace window and has a beautiful night in Rome alongside a dashing American reporter played by Gregory Peck. As I told my daughters the story, I explained that My Week With Marilyn has similarities to Roman Holiday.

I told the girls that I have a weakness for movies about the creative process. They reminded me that Shakespeare in Love was about writing Romeo and Juliet and Finding Neverland explored how Sir James Peter Barrie wrote Peter Pan. Those were the movies they remembered of mine about the creative process. I told them that this new one was about the making of a fun, very clumsy movie, but that the way Colin Clark described making the movie gave you great insight and poked fun at the whole movie process. Sometimes, like a needle to a balloon, I said.

My girls had an idea of who Marilyn Monroe was, but they certainly did not know who Sir Laurence Olivier was. Nor did they have any idea about method acting or classic acting. But I told them the clash provided a lot of comedy in the piece and that the movie had huge laughs and hopefully, if I can convince everybody, maybe a couple of fun musical numbers, too. As I went around the room, looking for a thumbs up, I saw their faces reluctant to give it to me. So I pulled out the trump card. Michelle Williams. Now my girls are lucky enough to know Michelle Williams and they know her daughter too. She is as sweet to my daughters as she is to her own. When a hair colorist had made a mistake on one of the girls, Michelle did an operation worthy of Bond, James Bond, and got it all sorted and fixed. In my house, that made her a folk hero. And that proved to be the closer.

So off we went to London with Simon Curtis directing and David Parfitt producing. We assembled an all-star cast with Kenneth Branagh as Olivier and Dame Judi Dench as Dame Sybil Thorndike. We got the effervescent Emma Watson, the charming Dominic Cooper, the dashing Dougray Scott and the vivacious Julia Ormond. To play Colin Clark, we enlisted the tony award winning Eddie Redmayne. In due time, every girl on the set fell in love with. He is an actor of great vulnerability and also panache, both vital requirements to play Colin Clark.

Simon Curtis wanted to immerse the film in reality so we shot it at the locations that it took place in in real life. So Windsor Castle was Windsor Castle. The Aristocratic British School for Boys was Eaton. No one ever gets to film in these locations, yet magic strings were pulled and red tape disappeared. The rumor was that somehow the royal family pulled those strings. In 1956 Marilyn Monroe met the Queen at a royal premiere. You can watch some of this footage on YouTube. They had a wonderful rapport and it was reported in all the British newspapers that they got along famously. The irony of Marilyn meeting the Queen was that they were the same age as the Queen. Imagine, Marilyn in her 80s.

Pinewood Studios was where the original film The Prince and the Showgirl was made and lo and behold Simon arranges for Michelle Williams to have Marilyn Monroe's dressing room. In the film there is a magic moment when Marilyn Monroe comes down to greet the company of players who are making this film. When the door opened to Marilyn/Michelle's dressing room and she came out in a beautiful gown, something very similar to what Marilyn wore, and greeted Kenneth, Toby, Derek, Judi, Dougray, Julia and Eddie, you could hear a pin drop. The applause that you hear in the movie for Marilyn's entrance was just as real for Michelle's entrance as Marilyn. Everyday Michelle performed alchemy to transform into Monroe. Her use of makeup was as splendid as it was detailed. She practiced the voice, the walk, the wiggle, the waddle, the signing and the dancing.

For anybody who loves movies, this is a movie about making movies. We see Colin Clark start to work his way from a lowly third assistant director to finally becoming Laurence Oliver's right hand man on set (later on in life, Clark became a key executive at Olivier's production company and finally a great documentary filmmaker, producer, writer, director and author).

He witnesses Marilyn's fateful argument when Arthur Miller writes in his journal that it is impossible to live with Monroe after only 30 days of marriage. That the paparazzi had rendered him soulless. They fight, she ends up alone.

Colin then tells Marilyn the truth about herself. Through the relationship of making the movie, they become friends and eventually become romantic.

All the comedy that Simon intended to be in the film is there. Watching Kenneth Branagh and Michelle Williams dual of wits is bloody entertaining. Nothing is more satisfying to me than watching an audience reaction to a movie. We screened the final cut of Marilyn to Michelle in Detroit where she was shooting Sam Raimi's Oz when a packed theater erupted into huge laughter, but the best sight was watching Michelle's laughter too.

The finished movie was rated R. A problem for an 8-year-old, a 13-year-old and a 16-year-old. But I decided to take them to the New York Film Festival with their grandmother where My Week With Marilyn was the centerpiece and the film had its official premiere. It had been one year since that dinner at Cipriani when I got the green light to get involved in the film. So there I was, presenting an R-rated movie to my daughters. Much less their grandmother who tends to get rather conservative over things like that. When the lights went down, the magic began and I could hear the laughter and cheers from my girls. Even though they didn't really know who Marilyn Monroe or Laurence Olivier where, they too were laughing at those jokes. The older one whispered Roman Holiday and that from watching this movie she thought that Michelle Williams was a modern day Audrey Hepburn.

Miriam, in her true parlance (even though she'd been told the story ten times), said she had no idea that Marilyn Monroe fell in love with a 23-year-old boy. Then grandma said to her daughters, "you should not be seeing an R-rated movie, you could get in trouble for that".

To this I responded, "don't worry Mom, I know Bert Fields and David Boies too."

As we filed out of the theater, the girls started talking about Marilyn Monroe saying she was a strong independent woman. They said she was smart, funny and determined. They said she had a kind streak in her. That she was misunderstood and that they could feel her warmth.

They said that in the 1950s, when women were just going along with the status quo, she stood out. That she was rebellious, but had a sense of humor about it and was thus very effective.

And then finally, the corker. They said Marilyn Monroe was cool and that as a result, I was kind of cool for making the movie.

The epilogue to the story, is that two weeks ago, Katy Perry saw the film and tweeted about how much she liked it. When I told my girls she wanted to meet me they said, "you're not cool enough to meet Katy Perry," and that they should go in my place. As a father of four daughters, I've learned that COOL is a gift that only comes occasionally, but for a short time, Marilyn Monroe made dad cool.
