Steve Grand's Debut Album, 'All-American Boy,' Slated For March Release

Out singer-songwriter Steve Grand, who shot to viral fame in 2013 with the smash single "All-American Boy," will release his hotly-anticipated debut album on March 24.

In addition to the title track, "All-American Boy" features 12 all-new original songs written by Grand and producer Aaron Johnson (The Fray, Eve6). Highlights of the set include "Back to California" and "Time," clips of which Grand released on social media in advance of the album's release over the course of 2014.

Fans will recall that "All-American Boy" was funded via a Kickstarter campaign. With supporters contributing over $325,000, Grand's project became the third most-funded music project in the site's history.

Although he is an outspoken advocate for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, Grand hopes listeners will see his music as universal rather than political in any respect. Although he was labeled country music's first out gay male artist, the Chicago-based star says "All-American Boy" sees him branching out into a variety of musical genres.

"I'm a songwriter, so I draw from my own personal experiences and I write about them the way any other songwriter would," Grand, who cited Billy Joel, Lady Gaga and Bruce Springsteen as influences, said in an email statement. Noting that each song "explores some kind of relationship," he added, "There's nothing different about my music just because I'm gay. I sing about things that I go through, but they are things that we all go through, regardless of our sexual orientation.”

In advance of the album's release, Grand released an intimate piano version of "All-American Boy" this week. Check it out above. For more information on "All-American Boy," head to Grand's official website.

Eddie Murphy Is Returning To 'SNL' For The First Time Since 1984

The last time Eddie Murphy made an appearance on "Saturday Night Live" was Dec. 15, 1984. Thirty-one years later, it appears Murphy will finally return to the show that helped make him a star. In an interview with Roland Martin for NewsOne Now, Murphy said he'd appear on the forthcoming 40th anniversary special for "SNL" that NBC will air on Feb. 15.

"It just never worked out where the timing was right for me to do it," Murphy said when asked why he hadn't appeared on "SNL" in decades. "They're actually having a 40th anniversary, I think, in two weeks. I'm going to that, and that'll be the first time I've been back since I left."

A representative for NBC was not immediately available for comment.

Murphy's acrimonious history with the show dates back to a joke David Spade made about him on Weekend Update during the 1990s, when Murphy's career had hit a low point after "Vampire in Brooklyn." ("Look, children, a falling star.")

"[T]hey were shitty to me on 'Saturday Night Live' a couple of times after I'd left the show. They said some shitty things," Murphy said in an interview with Rolling Stone in 2011. "There was that David Spade sketch. I made a stink about it, it became part of the folklore. What really irritated me about it at the time was that it was a career shot. It was like, 'Hey, come on, man, it's one thing for you guys to do a joke about some movie of mine, but my career? I'm one of you guys. How many people have come off this show whose careers really are fucked up, and you guys are shitting on me?' And you know every joke has to go through all the producers, and ultimately, you know Lorne or whoever says, [Lorne Michaels voice] 'OK, it's OK to make this career crack.'"

Murphy added that he felt unhappy about that for years. "I wouldn't go to retrospectives, but I don't let it linger," he added. "I saw David Spade four years ago. Chris Rock was like, 'Do you guys still hate each other?' and I was like, 'I don't hate David Spade, I'm cool with him.'"

Jennifer Lopez: Can You Mix Motherhood and Moxie?

$

Actress and music sensation Jennifer Lopez has been dazzling Hollywood for years with her style and sex appeal, and in next month's issue of Complex Magazine the 45-year-old continues to flaunt it. However, her choice of revealing clothing has raised some controversy about whether she is presenting herself appropriately considering she is also now a mother. JLo's response was simple: "I'm not allowed to be sexy because I'm a mom? It's like, how do you think I got my children?"

JLo is not alone. Last year everyone was talking about the incredible Grammy's performance by Beyoncé and her husband rapper Jay-Z. The stars opened the show with a super charged rendition of the song Drunk In Love. Their chemistry electrified the entire Staples Center. Even so, some people thought the couple and parents of young daughter Blue Ivy were too racy and crossed the line with their performance. Both situations raise the question: are people supposed to stop being sexy when they have children? Can you be only one thing or the other, a parent or an attractive and alluring person?

It is a slippery slope to balance the responsibility of being a mother, and all the demands that go with that, with the desires and expressions of femininity. As far as JLo goes, she has always exuded sensuality, sexuality and confidence as a woman, and continues to while being a hands-on mom. Whether you agree or not, she makes the statement that motherhood and sexiness can go together rather than being mutually exclusive.

Although some disapprove of her actions, it's important for a woman to feel sexy all the time - especially after having children. Rather than being upset by her choices, her children can be proud of her for being a confident woman. The reality is, the goal of every woman who has children is to be able to integrate her sensuality with being a mom, and not lose herself or her sexual expression. JLo has stayed true to who she is, and keeping that up allows every woman the chance to be hot at any age. If there is any message here, it is that especially as a mother it is important to still preserve time for you and take the plunge to make room for the small pleasures that add excitement to your life and help you rev up your routines. It could be finding an hour here or there to exercise, buying something pretty, wearing that silk blouse, having your hair cut, or getting that manicure or pedicure every few weeks. The aim is to be your own best self. Having children does not have to preclude you from giving yourself the opportunities to do the things that will enhance feeling good and make you want to flirt with your partner.

JLo knows what makes her feel sexy. Really, though, it is not the specifics of what you wear that matters; it is the essence of what you put into what you wear that will lead to letting your sexual self-expression shine that is important. If you are able to do that, then you can find a marvelous mix of motherhood and moxie.

Iggy Azalea Goes On Rant After Alleged Steve Madden Photos Surface, Calls It 'Most Disgusting Photo Shoot Ever'

Hip-hop artist Iggy Azalea is slated to release a shoe collaboration with Steve Madden in February, but it seems like there might be a little trouble in paradise.

Earlier Thursday, Azalea caught wind of alleged photos on what she referred to as a "random" Tumblr page and wasted no time at all to express her feelings about the campaign. Azalea has since deleted her tweets, and the Tumblr page in question is now password-protected.

croissant

For the duration that the Tumblr page was open to the public, Internet users (including HuffPost Style) were able to see trippy images and gifs mixed with crotch shots of headless models, images of the star and floating text blocks with phrases including "Modern-day Spice Girls," and "Unapologetic, loud and fun." An unattributed quote also appeared on the page saying, "I wanted to make shoes your girlfriends would love and your boyfriends wouldn't understand."

The photos of the shoes on the Tumblr page appeared to match images that Azalea Instagrammed in 2014, when she mentioned the upcoming collaboration.

When reached for comment, a spokesperson for The Steve Madden Company told The Huffington Post:
"This was a lover’s quarrel. We love Iggy and are very excited about our collaboration. When you get two artists working together sometimes there are fireworks. It’s our creative differences that allow us to design an incredible collection and we are looking forward to sharing it with the world!"

Fans took to Twitter to post images of the Tumblr page. Take a look below.

Katy Perry is known for wowing us with playful vibes on the red carpet, but when it comes to taking on the role of Super Bowl Halftime Show performer, she's clearly not messing around.

Perry arrived at the Super Bowl Halftime Show press conference on Thursday fully decked out in, well, footballs. The singer wore a custom made crop top and skirt combination by RVN, which, according to a release, was made just days before the conference. She topped off the look with a sleek pony and you guessed it, football-shaped accessories.

'Fifty Shades' Star Dakota Johnson On Why Anastasia Is Actually Feminist

"Fifty Shades of Grey" star Dakota Johnson won't take criticism of her character silently. In a new interview alongside co-star Jamie Dornan and director Sam Taylor-Johnson for Glamour's March issue, the star opened up about why she thinks Anastasia can be a great role model for women.

"I completely disagree with people who think Ana’s weak," she said. "I think she’s actually stronger than [Christian Grey, the title character played by Dornan] is. Everything she does is her choice. And if I can be an advocate for women to do what they want with their bodies and not be ashamed of what they want, then I’m all for that."

After months of anticipation, "Fifty Shades of Grey" will finally hit theaters on Feb. 13. Johnson and Dornan recently generated even more buzz for the debut by co-presenting the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Mini-Series or TV Movie at the 2015 Golden Globes.

Sherri Shepherd's Surrogate Slams Her For Acting Like 'Baby Is Non-Existent' (VIDEO)

Over five months since giving birth to a baby boy in Pennsylvania, Sherri Shepherd’s surrogate, Jessica Bartholomew, has finally broken her silence on the much-publicized bitter public battle between the former “The View” cohost and her ex-husband Lamar Sally.

Bartholomew recently sat down for an exclusive interview with “Inside Edition” where she shared her thoughts on Shepherd’s absence in the infant’s life.

“I just don't understand how she can do that and act like this baby is non-existent,” the 32-year-old mother of two said during the interview. “It just blows my mind… She's a hard-working mom. She is dedicated to her son that she has now, so, you have to be dedicated to the other son."

Shepherd’s involvement in the life of her surrogate son, Lamar Jr., was also highlighted during a November 2014 segment on the syndicated entertainment show, in which Sally revealed an alleged settlement offer by his ex-wife.

“She offered me a settlement of $150,000, but it was not to have her name on the birth certificate. I can’t do that to my son,” he said before denying reports that he’s a “gold digger.”

“There’s no amount of money to ease my worry about my son. If she would just do the right thing and we co-parent... That’s all I want.”

Shepherd’s absence during the birth of Lamar Jr. resulted in Bartholomew’s name listed on the birth certificate as his mother, which has impacted her financially.

“It’s affected me a lot. I am now listed as a noncustodial parent in California,” Bartholomew admitted. “I have a child support case coming against me now.”

“Because [Shepherd] doesn’t want to be a part of the baby’s life, I have to pick up all the slack with my name being on the birth certificate, a noncustodial parent, medical bills. I’m still considered the mother of a child that’s not mine.”

Benedict Cumberbatch Joins Call To Overturn Gay Convictions

$

0
Benedict Cumberbatch has joined the call for overturning "indecency" convictions handed down to gay men like war hero Alan Turing, whom he portrays in the film "Imitation Game."

Turing was a computer scientist and mathematician who helped crack the Nazi naval code known as "Enigma" during World War II, leading to the Allied victory. Turing was also gay, and in 1952 was prosecuted for his sexual orientation under the U.K.'s indecency laws. Instead of jail time, Turing chose chemical castration. He died by suicide in 1954, and his "crime" was pardoned by Queen Elizabeth II in 2013.

Last week, after a screening of "The Imitation Game" at London's Ham Yard Hotel, comedian Stephen Fry called for pardons for thousands of other gay men convicted under the same laws. Cumberbatch expressed his support for the campaign in an email sent to The Hollywood Reporter.

"Alan Turing was not only prosecuted, but quite arguably persuaded to end his own life early, by a society who called him a criminal for simply seeking out the love he deserved, as all human beings do," he wrote. "Sixty years later, that same government claimed to ‘forgive’ him by pardoning him. I find this deplorable, because Turing’s actions did not warrant forgiveness — theirs did — and the 49,000 other prosecuted men deserve the same."

An open letter has been addressed to Her Majesty’s Government, imploring young political leaders including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, William and Kate, to see that such convictions are wiped clean, according to the Telegraph.

The apology and pardon of Alan Turing are to be welcomed but ignores over 49,000 men who were convicted under the same law, many of whom took their own lives. An estimated 15,000 men are believed to still be alive. The UK’s homophobic laws made the lives of generations of gay and bisexual men intolerable. It is up to young leaders of today including The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to acknowledge this mark on our history and not allow it to stand.

"The Imitation Game" is nominated for a handful of Oscars, including the coveted Best Picture award. On Saturday, ads purchased by the film's distributor, the Weinstein Company, appeared in newspapers, highlighting the plight of the movie's protagonist, the New York Times reported.

“Honor this movie. Honor this man. And honor the movement to bring justice to the other 49,000,” the ads read, quoting Human Rights Campaign activist Chad Griffin.

John Legend On 'Selma' Snubs: 'It Was Oscar-Worthy Work'

$

Following his first Golden Globe win, for the track "Glory" from the film "Selma," John Legend, along with his fellow songwriter Common, are favored to win their very first Oscar. But before Legend gets there, he stopped by Sundance to perform a few Nina Simone covers following the world premiere of "What Happened Miss Simone?" Next up, Legend will perform at the Grammys, where he'll also vie for the Best Pop Solo Performance trophy. He also recently teamed up with Axe to form the White Label Collective in order to help bring out and mentor aspiring artists. Legend sat down with HuffPost Entertainment to discuss the "Selma" snubs at the Oscars, working with Axe and writing his next album.

You recently won a Golden Globe for your song "Glory" with Common, and the track earned an Oscar nomination. How much more weight do these honors hold that the song is a part of "Selma"?
Well, anytime you are nominated or awarded, it's a huge a thing. But I think it makes it even more special being a part of “Selma.” You know, the film is so important, and I feel so connected to the material of the film just having grown up inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King and the great work of the Civil Rights Movement. Ava DuVernay did such a beautiful job rendering that in a way that was really powerful and poignant, and really inspiring and relevant to what’s happening in America and the world right now. Having a song that was able to add to that and help bring attention to that film is such a huge honor for me, and a huge honor for Common, and we’re just so grateful for having this opportunity.

Common pulled you in for the song, so what were some of the first discussions or ideas that you guys had when decided how you wanted to write it?
I knew what the film was about, of course, and he called me saying that they needed a title song and you want to write something that’s very special for that moment. We all know how the story goes, even if we don’t know all the details, and so you want a moment that’s inspiring and powerful and uplifting. So that’s what we tried to do. He helped me by suggesting titles for the song before I started writing it. When he said glory, I just felt like that was a perfect title for it, and I built off of that. I wrote the piano part and my vocals and then sent him the idea I had put down and he loved it and wrote his verses to it.

How do you view music as a vehicle for social change?
I think the movement is really driven by the people and their desire for change, but I do think music is able to inspire, and can provide a little more fuel for the movement. But most of it is driven by the people and their own concerns -- being fed up with injustice, being fed up with unfairness, and going out there to seek a way to make change happen. To pressure politicians, to pressure the public to say, “Hey, our concerns need to be met.” But I do think music can help galvanize and inspire movement.

Music sometimes provides a moment or context that people can remember and draw from.
It gives you more of a connection to the subject matter and sometimes certain things can be said in a speech, but hearing it as a part of music that you listen to over and over again carries a certain resonance that speeches might not carry.

Ever since the Oscar nominees were announced, there's been a lot of discussion around the idea that “Selma” was largely snubbed, however there was little outrage to be heard from the actual cast of the film.
Nobody wants to feel like they’re not being gracious because we are all grateful, first of all, that I was nominated and Common was nominated and the film is nominated for Best Picture. But I do feel a bit disappointed because Ava and David [Oyelowo] did Oscar-worthy work. It’s truly a brilliant film, and David as the center of the film did such a masterful job capturing Dr. King’s spirit, and I thought it was Oscar-worthy work. It’s unfortunate that they weren’t recognized for it.

As far as music goes, what other projects do you have going on?
First of all, I’m excited about what I’m doing with Axe White Label Collective. We’re giving new artists, aspiring artists, the opportunity to be where I am basically. We know that luck is really when opportunity meets preparation. You can practice your craft, study your craft, you can do all that you can on your own, but sometimes you need somebody to give you that opportunity to really let you shine and that’s what we are trying to with the Axe White Label Collective. We’re inviting aspiring recording artists and musicians to submit their art on YouTube, some kind of original song they are performing and may written as well, and the winners will get a chance to meet me and get mentoring from me and also perform at South By Southwest.

Is mentoring artists something you constantly want to do or are very passionate about?
It’s something I’ve done in the past, I’ve signed artists like Estelle, and worked with other artists like Stacy Barthe. And even artists I didn’t formally sign a deal with, I’ve given them advice and written with them, just trying to help them along. Kanye did the same thing for me. We’re close to each other in age, but he had started to blow up as a producer before I had blown up as an artist and he started to help me by producing my demo, featuring me on other records he was doing. A lot of times you need that extra helping hand so you can take the leap.

Are you working on any solo music?
Yeah, I’m going to start writing my next album soon. I’ve been so busy with the last album, I toured almost a year and a half with the last album, and with awards season it has been pretty crazy, but once this has all settled down, I want to just go back to writing.

What’s your ideal situation for writing?
I love to write in the studio, actually. I write there and then record a demo version, and a lot of times I will revise the arrangement and maybe recut the vocals later. But I still like to write in the studio because it makes me feel like I’m at work, I’m focused, I can’t, like, stop and watch TV or any other stuff. Going into the studio just gets me focused and it’s where I get the most work done.

"Parenthood" ended on Thursday night with a bunch of tears and one beautiful montage set in the future. Now, NBC has released a few deleted scenes that tug at our heartstrings just a little harder.

This one includes a visit from Amber's (Mae Whitman) dad Seth (John Corbett), who wants to meet baby Zeek for the first time. Corbett told The Hollywood Reporter that showrunner Jason Katims told him the scene would be cut for time, but was "super bummed." Katims told TVLine, "It was a really nice moment, and it was painful to cut it. But unfortunately, we were in a situation where we didn’t have a choice."

Another clip shows the original Bravermans -- Camille (Bonnie Bedelia), Zeek (Craig T. Nelson) and their four children -- roasting Sarah (Lauren Graham) before her wedding. They run through all of her ex-boyfriends at the dinner table.

In the last deleted scene, Hank (Ray Romano) and his daughter Ruby (Courtney Grosbeck) have a rare, sweet moment. "I'm really happy for you," she says to her dad. Don't mind the weeping over here.
