Chris Rock Stopped Playing Colleges Because They're 'Too Conservative'

Comedian and actor Chris Rock told New York magazine he stopped playing colleges because they've gotten "way too conservative."

Writer Frank Rich asked Rock about some of his recent, controversial jokes about the Boston Marathon, 9/11 and the World Trade Center, and whether the backlash could hurt his career. Diving deeper, Rich asked Rock about his thoughts on students' attempt to block Bill Maher from speaking on campus due to his comments on HBO about Muslims. That's when Rock said college campuses in America were too conservative, though, not necessarily in a political way:

Not in their political views -- not like they’re voting Republican -- but in their social views and their willingness not to offend anybody. Kids raised on a culture of “We’re not going to keep score in the game because we don’t want anybody to lose.” Or just ignoring race to a fault. You can’t say “the black kid over there.” No, it’s “the guy with the red shoes.” You can’t even be offensive on your way to being inoffensive.

Rich asked when Rock started to notice that.

"Probably a couple of tours ago," Rock responded. "It was just like, This is not as much fun as it used to be. I remember talking to George Carlin before he died and him saying the exact same thing."

College students at various campuses protested to remove several commencement speakers in the spring of 2014. Civil liberty advocates, progressives, and staffers at HuffPost criticized students for being misguided in their activism against the would-be guest speakers.

Gerardo Mejìa, 'Rico Suave' Singer, Says Womanizing Is 'Expected' In His Culture

Gerardo Mejìa found fame in the '90s with his wildly popular song "Rico Suave." It was during this wave of popularity that the rapper found himself bedding somewhere between 500 to 600 women -- despite being married.

According to the "Suave Says" star, it was his Ecuadorian background that normalized infidelity for him.

"In my culture, as a Latin man, it's expected," he explained.

"My mom, when I finally went and 'fessed up about everything, my mom was talking to my wife and she was like, 'well, you know, he's an artist. He's a man,'" Mejìa continued. "It's like, they look at it as that."

And while the singer and his wife are still together today, his trysts still brought consequences.

"We get in trouble too when we get caught," he admitted. "Guys think they're so sly. One day, it comes back."

I've been a music junkie ever since I could remember. I'll never forget being four years old and asking my mom to cut the shoulders off of my green sweatshirt so that I could look just like the girl on the cover of the Flashdance album. Isn't imitation the highest form of flattery? When we love something we want to make it our own, somehow. My love and appreciation for the songs from Flashdance clearly made me aspire to sing and dance like a maniac in 1984. Oh, what a feeling...

Recently, I saw the band Horse Feathers do a cover of Nirvana's "Drain You" and fell in love immediately. I'm fascinated with the concept of music evoked nostalgia and I think that is exactly what musicians feel when they decided to cover another artist's song. There is also something about the old becoming new again for the audience. The mix is comforting, yet has that element of surprise. Needless to say, I was inspired to put together a list of my favorites.

Here are My Top 15 Cover Song Must Haves (In No Particular Order):

1. Mercy, Mercy Me (The Ecology) by Marvin Gaye
Covered by: The Strokes, Eddie Vedder and Josh Homme

A fresh take on an essential ode to Mother Nature: Sunny with a 99 percent chance of garage grunge- pop explosion. This takes us back to 1971, when Marvin first asked us "How much more abuse from man can she stand?" 43 years later, not much has changed, except for the generation's voice. Eddie and Julian's vocals are a husky, warm and velvety combo, backed up with killer hooks. These cool cats get credit for shedding light on the environment again and doing it for charity.

Fun fact: Vedder once said, "If it's a good cause, I'll play just about anything." Stellar.

2. I Saw Her Standing There by The Beatles
Covered by: Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros

Oh lucky day, two of my favorite bands colliding. The Fab Four revisited with a country, sock-hop twist. The Jade and Alexander duo sing to each other per usual in this adorable rendition. Simple, fun and straightforward, with "stringy strings." My heart went boom when I found this. Get me a gingham skirt, and a boy at an awkward 8th grade dance.

3. Drain You by Nirvana
Covered by: Horse Feathers

Who doesn't want to bring Nirvana back to life? This somewhat does and will tug at your heart strings. The original exhibited raw and animalistic qualities both in lyric and sound. Horse Feathers transforms it with haunting vocals and acoustics. The unexpectedness of an angelic string quartet takes the edge off... It's like meeting Kurt Cobain's innocent, soft spoken, Quaalude popping cousin and chewing his meat for him, because you "like" him.

4. Gin And Juice by Snoop Dogg
Covered by: The Gourds

Wow. Twangy, country, funky-ass sh*^t. Think college and frat-boys-playing-beer pong till six in the morning. It's a crowd pleaser and the instrumental is sick. Rich banjo and violin come in strong... Snoop might drink himself into oblivion and smoke way too much indo trying to understand this ridiculously amusing rendition.

5. Down By The River by Neil Young
Covered by: Puss N Boots

...She could drag me over the rainbow and take me away with this cover. It's hearty and sultry. Chicks who can play the guitar and sing a Neil Young tune? Swoon. Put the guns down. No way you would shoot her dead down by the river with a voice like that. Pairs well with cowboy boots, mason jars and hip shaking.

6. All I Have To Do Is Dream by The Isely Brothers
Covered by: Lauren O'Connell

It's like an angel putting you to sleep. Lovely, seemingly effortless vocals. Put it on repeat and pass out, no ambien necessary. Delicate, lullaby-ish...Only trouble is gee wiz, I'm dreaming my life away...

*Advice: Wake up, find that damn person and taste their lips of wine.

7. Private Eyes by Hall & Oates
Covered by: the bird and the bee

Here's some indie pop for you. Electronic dance sounds back up to an 80's classic, minus the best mustache and mullets of the 80s. I keep picturing Lisa P from Adventureland dancing to this. Or hearing it in the background of a Patrick Bateman, American Psycho scene.

8. Sweet Child O' Mine by Guns N' Roses
Covered by: Taken By Trees

Lots of piano. Awkward, beautiful, uneven voice. I see ballerinas floating...."Her hair reminds me of a warm safe place"...way unlike Axl Rose's weird dreads/ cornrow period. You may however, miss Slash on guitar and of course, Axl's irreplaceable sway.

9. She Said, She Said by The Beatles
Covered by: The Black Keys

Beatles gone blues. I didn't recognize it at first. This cover is like being in a sea of flannel listening to your best friends rocking out in a garage. Really digging this rendition for it's rugged, manly, grittiness. One tambourine, please. A few butt slaps, thank you. Pairs nicely with whisky and hipsters.

10. 99 Problems by Jay-Z
Covered by: Hugo

I got 99 problems but finding a country rendition to Jay-Z ain't one. This is hillbilly- fun-loving overload. Accentuation at it's finest. Insert drawl.

Fun fact: Hugo asked Jay-Z around 2am, (after he had enough drinks in him) "So I was thinking about doing '99 Problems' with a banjo. You're okay with that right?" He looked at me for a second, smiled and said, "Go for it, man."

11. Dire Wolf by The Grateful Dead
Covered by: Nicki Blume and The Gramblers

A Jerry lovers/ camp fire/ road trip MUST. It's charming. They had me at "van sessions".... Nikki's voice is impeccable, perfect like a songbird and these dudes kill it.

Bonus fun fact: I spoke with Deren Ney (rad guy playing the electric guitar) and here's what he had to say, " I hope Jerry would like it, sure. I think he would dig the mix of musicality and humor. As goofy as the videos are, it's clear how respectfully we approach the songs. We aren't just drinking beer and loosely jamming a song. Actually, we are drinking beer." Tightly done on a buzz. What a gem.

12. Addicted To Love by Robert Palmer
Covered by: Florence and The Machine

Florence decided that in fact, we are all addicted to love and I dig the reverse/ chick take on this song. It's sexy, sultry and seductive. Starts off slow and quiet with lingering vocals and a magical harp. The beat comes in and all of a sudden she captures you in a trance like a siren. Now... if we could just add those back up babes with the bushy eyebrows, red lips and slicked back hair from the original Robert Palmer video to this version, it would be serendipity.

Fun fact: none of them knew how to play an instrument anyway. #EyeCandyOnly

13. Handle With Care by The Traveling Wilburys
Covered by: Jenny Lewis, Ben Gibbard, Conor Oberst and M. Ward

What a classic to cover. The Wilburys were a supergroup; some pretty big boots to fill, but these new cats handled it with care. Here's a beautiful indie-folk-rock clusterf*ck of newer talent. It's as sweet, up-beat and adorable as Jenny Lewis herself, with an exceptional supporting cast to lean on. M.Ward's voice is dreamy and the cherry on top.

Fun fact: the original lyrics are "I've been fobbed off and I've been fooled" but Jenny changed it to "fucked off and I've been fooled." I bet Bob Dylan would appreciate that.

14. Crazy by Gnarls Barkley
Covered by: Ray Lamontagne

Totally unexpected. This acoustic version is practically unrecognizable. Ray took the fun out of Barkley's original and is trying to rip your hearts and guts out. Success. It's intense, raspy, raw, heart wrenching and asking the wailing question: Does that make me crazy? Yup. Ray, bless your soul for taking this song to a whole new level.

15. Pursuit Of Happiness by Kid Cudi
Covered by: Lissie

Covered in gold... and a bit of tequila. Lissie is a spirited bad-ass, channeling a new age She-ra: sassy, vibrant, empowering and pretty damn convincing. One word: lungs. Three more words: Sorry not sorry. Living life to the fullest, it's what we all want, right? It sucks sometimes, but "F*ck that," you'll figure it out. Add this to your workout mix, girls. (However, a very cool dude introduced me to this one, so don't be shy guys).

...And for all you music hipsters out there who already knew these:

Jake Gyllenhaal recently dropped nearly 30 pounds to play sociopathic cameraman Lou Bloom in "Nightcrawler," but now he's taking his body transformation to a whole other level.

The 33-year-old actor looks unrecognizable in a new still from the upcoming flick "Southpaw," which tells the tale of Junior Middleweight Champion Billy “The Great” Hope as he faces a personal tragedy while fighting his way to the top. Gyllenhaal, who plays Billy in the Antoine Fuqua-directed film, clearly hit the gym for the role, gaining 15 pounds of muscle, according to Deadline, who obtained the image.

jake

“Jake is going to change how people see him," Fuqua told Deadline of Gyllenhaal's transformation. "I had him training twice a day in the boxing ring, he did two-a-days seven days a week. I pretty much had him with me and my trainer every day. I took him to almost every fight. I had him train at Floyd Mayweather’s gym in Vegas and we watched Floyd’s fights, and the Manny Pacquiao fight. He trained in New York at Church Gym with real fighters. We literally turned him into a beast," he added. "Jake, my God, he’s a very electric, powerful fighter in this movie, and a guy who fights for his daughter. I’m confident that this will change how people see Jake, as a leading man."

Gyllenhaal is receiving a lot of award season buzz for his performance in "Nightcrawler" and it appears next year might be another big one for the actor.

Scarlett Johansson Secretly Marries Fiance Romain Dauriac

Surprise! Scarlett Johansson is a married woman.

The Granite County Clerk in Philipsburg, Montana confirmed to Gossip Cop that the 30-year-old actress did indeed tie the knot with fiance Romain Dauriac on Oct. 1.

Page Six was the first to report on the couple's secret wedding, which took place less than a month after the pair welcomed their first child, daughter Rose, in September.

“Scarlett and Romain were married in a very intimate ceremony after the birth of their daughter," a source told Page Six. "They kept the wedding a big secret because they both wanted privacy.”

Despite reports, Johansson and French journalist Dauriac did not marry in their hometowns of New York City and Paris, but exchanged vows in Montana.

Wedding speculation surfaced after Johansson was spotted wearing a gold band on her ring finger last month. Dauriac has also been sporting a ring on that finger since October.

The pair, who began dating in 2012, got engaged in August 2013. This is the first marriage for Dauriac and the second for Johansson, who officially divorced her first husband Ryan Reynolds in 2011.

Terry Crews Is 'Not Going To Be Silent' About Sexism

"Brooklyn Nine-Nine" star Terry Crews just dropped some serious knowledge about feminism, masculinity and manhood. And we're definitely listening.

The actor and former NFL player sat down with The Agenda's Elamin Abdelmahmoud for the What Makes A Man 2014 conference to discuss Crews' new book about masculinity and his thoughts on feminism and sexism.

Crews related sexism to civil rights, telling Abdelmahmoud, "The people who were silent at the lunch counters, when it was the black lunch counter and the white one or the schools were segregated.. and you were quiet. You were accepting it. Same thing with men right now. If you don't say anything, you are, by your silence -- it's acceptance. I'm not going to be silent."

Crews clarified that the feminist movement is about gender equality:
I want to be clear that feminism is not saying "women are better than men." That's not what's going on. What it is is that we're talking about is gender equality, true gender equality... but the problem is that men have always felt like they're more valuable.. I have been that guy where I felt I was more valuable than my wife and kids.

terry crews

Crews told Abdelmahmoud that he gets varied reactions from other men when he speaks out about the problems with modern masculinity. Some are supportive, while others ask him, "''What are you doing?! It's man code, dude. Man code! C'mon!'" But as Crews pointed out, "Does man code work when it's your daughter who gets raped? Man code -- does that work when your mom gets abused?"

The 46-year-old actor explained that masculinity causes men to view women as prizes to be won. He told Abdelmahmoud: "What happens is they win and they go, 'You know that girl? She's my trophy. I deserve that girl. In fact, she don't even want to be with me, but I don't care. I'm going to take it.' What kind of mindset is that? Never never never never never should that ever be accepted. That's not 'code.' That's Taliban. That's ISIS."

Later in the interview, Abdelmahmoud asked Crews what his thoughts were on "high-profile" sexual assault allegations against celebrity men such as radio broadcaster Jian Ghomeshi and comedian Bill Cosby. Crews expressed that the problem is a rape culture which goes far beyond the individual men who are currently making headlines:
We’re battling a mindset.. It’s like cutting a tree down by the leaves -- it just grows back... The tree needs to come down and nobody’s getting at the stump and the stump is a mindset that people feel they’re more valuable than each other. And that’s what I’m attacking.

Mr. Crews, you sir are awesome.

Pharrell Williams On Ferguson Jury: 'What Are We Going To Do About It?'

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Pharrell Williams says "everyone is heartbroken" there was no grand jury indictment of a white police officer in the killing of a black Missouri teen.

Williams tweeted about the decision last week and said in an interview late Monday that his perspective on the case hasn't changed since the shooting in August. "My feelings have been the same since that boy was murdered," Williams said backstage at "The Voice" in Los Angeles, where he's a coach. "Everyone is heartbroken. It's another teen, unarmed teen gunned down."

The "Happy" hitmaker has been among the most high-profile recording artists to weigh in on the death of 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson and the racially charged aftermath, in a recently published Ebony magazine interview and elsewhere.

"So I mean, what are we going to do, though? What are we going to do about it?" he said.

He declined comment on ongoing protests including school walkouts across the country.

"It's not really about what I think. It's about what you're going to do. What are you going to do? He's a teen who is gone," Williams said. "He was gunned down. What are you going to do? You understand what I'm saying? That's why it hurts. Because you have no answer. None of us do. He's gone. That hurts."

Rolling Stones Saxophonist Bobby Keys Dead At 70

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Saxophonist Bobby Keys, a lifelong rock 'n' roller who toured with Buddy Holly, played on recordings by John Lennon and laid down one of the all-time blowout solos on the Rolling Stones' "Brown Sugar," has died. He was 70.

Michael Webb, who played keyboard with Keys, said Keys died Tuesday at his home in Franklin, Tennessee, after a lengthy illness. Keys had been on tour with the Stones earlier this year before his health prevented him from performing. "The Rolling Stones are devastated by the loss of their very dear friend and legendary saxophone player, Bobby Keys," the band said in a statement. "Bobby made a unique musical contribution to the band since the 1960s. He will be greatly missed."

Keys, one of the few rock saxophonists to become a name in his own right, was a heavy-set man with jowls to match and had a raw, piercing sound. The Lubbock, Texas, native was born the same day as Keith Richards — Dec. 18, 1943 — and the Stones guitarist would often cite Keys as a soul mate and favorite musician. On "Brown Sugar," he needed little time to seal his history with the band, which had decided a saxophone would work better than a guitar for the solo spotlight.

"It was the first take," he would recall.

Keys also played memorable solos on such Stones favorites as the seven-minute jam "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" and the country-styled "Sweet Virginia." Other career highlights included Lennon's chart-topping "Whatever Gets You Through the Night" and albums by Richards, George Harrison, Barbra Streisand and Eric Clapton. A self-titled solo album featured Harrison and Ringo Starr.

For a time, Keys played clubs and was billed as "Mr. Brown Sugar."

"I have lost the largest pal in the world, and I can't express the sense of sadness I feel, although Bobby would tell me to cheer up," Richards said in a statement.

Keys' career dated to the 1950s, when as a teenager he played with fellow Lubbock native Holly and The Crickets. He met the Stones in the mid-'60s while they were on the same bill at a state fair in San Antonio, Texas, and was distraught that the British rockers had recorded a cover of Holly's "Not Fade Away."

"I said, 'Hey, that was Buddy's song,'" Keys recalled in Richards' memoir "Life," published in 2010. "Who are these pasty-faced, funny-talking, skinny-legged guys to come over here and cash in on Buddy's song?"

But once Keys listened more closely, he decided the Stones were playing "actual rock and roll," an opinion the Stones more than shared about Keys. He first recorded with them in the late 1960s and toured and recorded with them off and on over the following decades, his work featured on three of the group's most acclaimed albums: "Let It Bleed," ''Sticky Fingers" and "Exile on Main Street."

In some ways, he was too close to Richards, sharing a taste for throwing televisions off hotel balconies and developing a heroin addiction that led to his temporary estrangement from the group. But he was with the Stones on every major tour over the past quarter century, dependably stepping up for his solo on "Brown Sugar."

Keys' memoir "Every Night's a Saturday Night" was published in 2012, with a foreword by Richards. Keys recalled that he was exposed to rock 'n' roll through Holly's music — not on the radio, but at the grand opening of a Texas gas station near the home of Keys' grandparents. It was the first time he heard an electric guitar played live.

"And right then and there I knew I wanted to have something to do with that music," Keys explained. Holly "just kinda lit a fuse that started burning then, and it's still burning now."

"Game of Thrones" has made its stars household names (people are even naming their babies after characters), but one actor recently revealed that the oncoming winter isn't the only problem for the residents of Westeros.

In the preview from the January issue of British GQ, Kit Harington opened up about the downside of being on one of the most popular shows on TV:

"Game Of Thrones" is my life; it's my day job; I love it. But honestly, if there is a curse of "Thrones," it's a lifetime of having to talk about it.

Though it may sound a little more like a first world problem than a "curse," talking about "GoT" is definitely something Harington is going to have to get used to. The actor has already said he's contractually obligated not to cut his hair for the show, and he goes on in the interview to say that this makes him much more recognizable to fans.

Check out the full British GQ interview, available Thursday, Dec. 4. And to see more of Harington, check out Season 5 of "GoT," which is set to debut in spring 2015 on HBO.

Over the past 12 months, countless teens have challenged the status quo and proved bravery doesn't come with an age requirement.

As 2014 comes to an end, we're taking a moment to celebrate some of this year's most fearless teens. Scroll down to see who made the list.

When Carleigh discovered a cruel graffiti message about her body painted in her hometown of Wall, New Jersey, she refused to play the victim. Instead, the teen stood up to body shaming by happily posing for a photograph -- in front of the hurtful graffiti. That photograph quickly rocketed her to viral fame as a true role model for positive body image.

Walmart Denies Stalling In Tracy Morgan Lawsuit

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Wal-Mart on Tuesday denied claims by lawyers for actor-comedian Tracy Morgan that the giant retailer is stalling a federal lawsuit over a fatal highway crash in New Jersey last summer.

In a court filing Monday, attorneys for Morgan opposed a motion by Wal-Mart driver Kevin Roper to intervene in the case. Roper isn't named as a defendant but is facing criminal charges in New Jersey. He is seeking to have the lawsuit delayed pending the resolution of his criminal case.

Morgan's attorneys accused Wal-Mart of stalling to avoid the disclosure of its safety practices.

The Bentonville, Arkansas-based Wal-Mart filed a letter with the court Tuesday that denied the accusation and said the company has taken no position on Roper's motion.

"Plaintiffs' accusation that Wal-Mart is somehow behind Mr. Roper's motion in an attempt to delay discovery is simply false," the company's attorneys wrote.

Last month, the federal judge overseeing the case set the next in-person settlement conference for early March and scheduled deadlines extending to November of 2015 for both sides to file motions.

Morgan, a former "Saturday Night Live" and "30 Rock" star, was returning from a performance in Delaware in June when the Wal-Mart truck driven by Roper slammed into the back of his limo van. Fellow comedian James McNair was killed, and Morgan and two others were seriously injured.

After a status conference with attorneys for both sides last month, Morgan's attorney, Benedict Morelli, said Morgan is fighting to recover from a traumatic brain injury suffered in the crash and is uncertain if he will be "the Tracy Morgan he once was."

A preliminary investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board said Roper was driving 65 mph in the 60 seconds before he slammed into the van. The speed limit on that stretch of the New Jersey Turnpike is 55 mph and was lowered to 45 mph that night because of construction.
