Movie Review: Rosewater -- Well-meaning

2014-11-14-rosewater1.jpg

I don't want this to sound condescending, because I'm a big admirer of Jon Stewart's work and admire his courage in taking on something as massive as directing a movie while holding down a full-time job.

So when I say that this is not bad for a first film, that's meant as a compliment. It's not even bad, as movies go in general. On a regular basis, I see many worse movies out there than Rosewater, Stewart's sometimes affecting, sometimes overly earnest film about an Iranian journalist thrown into solitary confinement by a regime that thinks he's a spy.

They don't really think he's a spy -- they simply hate the freedom he has as an Iran-born journalist living in London. So they grab him while he's in Tehran covering the rigged elections of 2009 for Newsweek and put him in solitary, except when they're grilling him about his mission as a spy for the Western media. That four-month imprisonment was the basis of real-life journalist Maziar Bahari's memoir about his experience, which served as the source material for Stewart's script for his directing debut.

Stewart does fine with the film right up until Bahari is grabbed by the Iranian government and tossed in jail. Until that point, Rosewater is a compelling tale of political courage.

Lorde Obviously Didn't Diss Kim Kardashian, She's Way Too Cool For That

Leave it to Lorde to prove that she's the best and make us feel very old in the process.

The 18-year-old singer explained her monosyllabic comment on Kim Kardashian's Internet-breaking, butt-baring cover, insisting she wasn't dissing her at all.

The singer responded to a fan's question on her Tumblr asking why, if she considers herself to be a feminist, does she think it's okay to judge Kardashian for doing a naked photo shoot simply because she's a mother.

lorde fan

Lorde explained that she retweeted Kardashian's "AMAZING" cover and wrote "MOM," not as a diss, but as a compliment, which is what the "youthz" are saying today, according to the wunderkind.

"It basically jokingly means “Adopt me/be my second mom/i think of you as a mother figure you are so epic” (obviously I love my own mama and she is the best tho) but straight after that i think someone else called out the cover saying Kim has no right to look that sexy as she is a mother which is TOTAL trash -- why should that stop her?" Lorde wrote. "If anything i think she gets even more beautiful and sexy all the time like a fine-ass wine, and of course has every right to showcase that."

The singer went on to explain that she believes the problem is that her comments got lumped in with other celebrities who didn't appreciate Kardashian's cover quite as much.

"I am the biggest fan of Jean-Paul Goude and of Grace Jones, as you know, and there’s no way i could support one and not the other you know? It wouldn’t make any sense to worship [Rihanna] in her Swarovski crystal gown at the CFDAs, or Grace naked on the cover of Island Life (as shot by Goude!), and not Kim. To summarize -- Kim’s cover was pure heaven," she added. "So so beautiful. I’m proud to say it’ll be on my wall."

Additionally, Lorde left us with this mystery hanging over our heads:

"PS. I messaged our mutual friend straight away and made sure kim understood, and she does and all is well. So i hope that’s cleared up. next time i’ll go for a good old fashioned 'SLAY' instead."

Guesses on the mutual friend?

"Homeless Joe," as he became known, who consumed up to 30 drinks a day, even came on Dr. Phil under the influence. "I do homelessness differently," he maintained. "This abstract lifestyle is not for everybody."

Coco Rocha Weighs In On Plus-Size Model Controversy: 'We're All Real Women'

Calvin Klein sparked a debate with their new "Perfectly Fit" underwear campaign, with controversy surrounding the terminology used to describe one of their models, Myla Dalbesio.

Although Dalbesio is "plus-sized" in the fashion industry, many people are saying the size 10 model is "healthy" and represents your "average woman." The campaign images led critics to take to Twitter, Instagram and Facebook to bring up the industry's unrealistic beauty standards.

Despite the fact that Calvin Klein never referred to Dalbesio as "plus-size," the 27-year-old model told Elle in a recent interview: "It's kind of confusing because I'm a bigger girl. I'm not the biggest girl on the market, but I'm definitely bigger than all the girls [Calvin Klein] has ever worked with, so that is really intimidating." (This statement definitely didn't diminish the strong public reaction.)

The Huffington Post caught up with model Coco Rocha at the celebration of Autograph Collection's newest hotel Atlantis, Paradise Island, Bahamas at the IAC building in New York City on Thursday, and she weighed in on the always-present "plus-size" model debate.

"I didn't really hear about the Calvin Klein thing ... but I have spoken out on the whole subject of plus-size models -- I don't even like a title: petite, short, high fashion, runway. It should all just be in one genre, it's just a model," she told HuffPost. "Even when they say 'real women.' I hate that too. We're all real. When someone tells me that I'm not real, I say to them, 'Well, what about me isn't real?' I have not changed my figure. This is who I am. My mom [has this body], this is genetics. So for anyone to be called plus-size, petite or 'not real,' it just frustrates me," she said.

Rocha is currently expecting her first child -- a baby girl -- and is looking forward to posing in all her pregnant glory. (That's a real woman right there!)

"I would like to do [a pregnancy shoot]. You always wonder when you get pregnant what projects and opportunities will come in or come knocking," she said. "So there's been some fun and interesting things and we'll see what pans out."

MTV 'Challenge' Star Diem Brown Dead At 32 Following Cancer Battle

Diem Brown, who was known for her appearances on MTV's "The Challenge," died on Friday at 32 years old, People confirmed. Brown had been diagnosed with cancer for the third time this past summer.

Brown had recently been asking fans for support, advice and prayers via her Twitter account. "Whatever option I have to LIVE I'm grabbing!" she wrote on Tuesday. She had previously beat ovarian cancer in 2006 and 2012.

"I didn't understand, really, that it could come back again," she told Dr. Drew 2012, when she received her second diagnosis. "Finding out you have it a second time, it's like, 'I've already done this, I thought I was over it.'" In 2013 she went into remission, but in August 2014, she announced that she had been diagnosed with colon cancer

The reality star from Georgia made her first "Challenge" appearance on "Fresh Meat" in 2006 and revealed on the show that she was battling ovarian cancer. She returned for another season, "The Duel," and during an intimate moment, she removed her wig in front of her fellow competitors. Her on-again-off-again relationship with Chris "CT" Tamburello was one of the series' greatest love stories and plot lines. She also appeared on "The Gauntlet III," "The Duel 2," "The Ruins" and "Battle of the Exes."

"MTV is tremendously sad to hear the news that Diem Brown has lost her long battle with cancer," the network said in a statement. "We send our deepest condolences to her family and friends. Diem was a true fighter and brought passion to everything she touched. We will miss her."

Brown spoke about her illnesses in public often, and was a frequent blogger for People.com, where she once filmed her hair loss. Brown also created MedGift, a gift registry website that helped patients gain financial support. "Cancer has changed who I am," she told People this summer. "It sounds like a cliché, but I've only got this one life, and I need to live every day to the fullest. I'm a lot more appreciative of things now."

Azealia Banks Defends Her Use Of The Word 'Faggot' While Discussing Perez Hilton Feud Again

Azealia Banks offered up yet another unusual justification for her use of the word "faggot" in a new interview.

The singer, who recently dropped her debut album, "Broke With Expensive Taste,"sat down The Guardian to discuss her life over the last several years, her new album and the past Twitter feuds she's engaged in with other celebrities.

Now, the rapper is continuing to defend her use of the word "faggot," but apparently seems to have changed her thoughts surrounding what it signifies.

In a recent interview the The Guardian, Banks clarified what, exactly, she is implying when she says "faggot," as well as her thoughts surrounding misogyny in the gay community.

I don’t regret doing it, but I’ll never do it again, because I don’t care enough about the person to have the battle again and defend my use of the word ‘faggot’... A lot of gay men are way more misogynistic than straight men. The shit they say about women behind their backs, it’s like: ‘Wow, oh my God!’

You can be a straight faggot, you can be a gay faggot. A faggot is anybody that hates women. It’s like, y’all sing along to my words when I’m saying ‘nigga’ and ‘cunt’, but as soon as I call this one white man a faggot the whole world exploded. Listen, I didn’t say all gay men are faggots; I said Perez Hilton is a faggot, so don’t try and bring the rest of the gays down with your faggotry.

The openly bisexual singer landed in hot water last year for calling celebrity blogger Perez Hilton a "messy faggot" while the two sparred via Twitter. Shortly thereafter, she went on to claim that "a faggot is not a homosexual male. A faggot is any male who acts like a female. There's a BIG difference."

Banks' comments about gay men and misogyny seem to echo those made by "Scream" actress Rose McGowan earlier this year. During a podcast with openly gay author Bret Easton Ellis, McGowan claimed that, "Gay men are as misogynistic as straight men, if not more so. I have an indictment of the gay community right now, I’m actually really upset with them.”

McGowan later apologized for making a "dumb generalization," but defended the message within her words.

No, Tina Fey isn't clairvoyant, but she did hint at why so many of us can't take our eyes off of Kim Kardashian's recent nude photo shoot with Paper Magazine in her book Bossypants three years ago.

As Twitter user Ryan Nelson pointed out on Nov. 13, Tina Fey briefly discussed Kim K's booty in her best-selling memoir Bossypants and summed up why we're all so enamored with it better than any blog, think piece or news article has in the last three days.

If you're reading this on a mobile device, here's the full text:

"I think the first real change in women’s body image came when JLo turned it butt-style. That was the first time that having a large-scale situation in the back was part of mainstream American beauty. Girls wanted butts now. Men were free to admit that they had always enjoyed them. And then, what felt like moments later, boom—Beyoncé brought the leg meat. A back porch and thick muscular legs were now widely admired. And from that day forward, women embraced their diversity and realized that all shapes and sizes are beautiful.

Ah ha ha. No. I’m totally messing with you. All Beyoncé and JLo have done is add to the laundry list of attributes women must have to qualify as beautiful. Now every girl is expected to have Caucasian blue eyes, full Spanish lips, a classic button nose, hairless Asian skin with a California tan, a Jamaican dance hall ass, long Swedish legs, small Japanese feet, the abs of a lesbian gym owner, the hips of a nine-year-old boy, the arms of Michelle Obama, and doll tits. The person closest to actually achieving this look is Kim Kardashian, who, as we know, was made by Russian scientists to sabotage our athletes."

Rumer Willis Still Stays In Touch With Former Stepdad Ashton Kutcher

Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher began dating in 2003 when Moore was 41 and Kutcher was 25. Although their May-December romance surprised many, they beat the odds and tied the knot in Sept. 2005, creating a strong family environment with Moore's ex-husband Bruce Willis and their three daughters Rumer, Scout and Tallulah.

But in Nov. 2011 after months of media speculation, Moore announced the couple's split and their divorce was finalized in 2013. Still Rumer Willis tells Access Hollywood that she and her former stepdad still try to stay in touch.

"I reached out to him when he had his baby the other day, which was so awesome. I saw photos of her. She's very cute," Rumer told Billy Bush and Kit Hoover of Kutcher and fiancee Mila Kunis' daughter, Wyatt Isabelle, who was born in September.

“It’s nice as I’ve gotten older, I realized the other day that he was a year younger than me [now] when he and my mom started going out, so that would be like me meeting someone who already had three teenage kids and kind of going into that whole situation was crazy,” she explained.

But don't get any ideas -- despite their texts back and forth, Rumer isn't going to babysit for Kutcher anytime soon.

"I mean, I have so many babies to babysit, I don’t know if I have time,” she said laughing, referring to her father Bruce and stepmom Emma Heming's daughters, Mabel, 2, and Evelyn, 6 months.

Rumer also opened up to Access Hollywood about her close-knit family and their unique situation.

"It's one of the things that I admire the most about my parents is that they set such an incredible example for putting their children first and kind of keeping a family together no matter what," Rumer said.

But will a Willis-Moore-Kutcher reunion ever happen? Probably not.

"It would be the best reality TV special ever," Rumer joked.

Dave Grohl Doesn't 'F--king Care' About Taylor Swift Vs. Spotify

The ever eloquent Dave Grohl has weighed in on Taylor Swift's decision to pull her music from Spotify. The Foo Fighters frontman explained his position while speaking to Digital Spy.

"Me personally? I don't fucking care," he said. "I want people to hear our music, I don't care if you pay $1 or fucking $20 for it, just listen to the fucking song. But I can understand how other people would object to that."

After removing all her music from the streaming service last week, Swift told Yahoo! Music it was a financial decision.

"All I can say is that music is changing so quickly, and the landscape of the music industry itself is changing so quickly, that everything new, like Spotify, all feels to me a bit like a grand experiment," she said. "And I'm not willing to contribute my life's work to an experiment that I don't feel fairly compensates the writers, producers, artists and creators of this music. And I just don't agree with perpetuating the perception that music has no value and should be free."

Music distribution modes have indeed undergone changes in recent years. But for Grohl, the way it worked when he was coming up is still best:

"You want people to fucking listen to your music? Give them your music," he said. "And then go play a show. They like hearing your music? They'll go see a show. To me it's that simple, and I think it used to work that way."

Hilary Swank Is Still 'Flabbergasted' By Hollywood, Even After 2 Oscars

Hilary Swank made her film debut in 1992 with “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” and followed two years later with “The Next Karate Kid." She has made a career out of playing badass women in unconventional roles. She has also won two Oscars -- for playing a paralyzed boxer in "Million Dollar Baby" and a transgender man in "Boys Don't Cry" -- and started her own production company. And yet, Swank, now age 40, is not the first to speak out about inequality in Hollywood.

“It’s not like I’m angry. I’m just flabbergasted,” she told HuffPost Entertainment at a press junket in Los Angeles for her upcoming film “The Homesman.”

hilary swank

Swank was referring to the fact that men in Hollywood can sometimes make up to 10 times more money than a female costar. “It’s the world I’ve been living in for so long, there’s no anger about it anymore. But I can’t really be angry when I feel like I’ve had the opportunity to play some of the strongest female roles in the last 15 years,” she said.

And “The Homesman” is no deviation from that pattern. Swank hasn’t been in a film in more than three years but returns to the screen in the Tommy Lee Jones film about a strong woman who transports three other women across the frontier to safety.

“There’s no Western with a woman like this,” Swank said, sitting on a couch in an empty hotel room at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. Her voice was hoarse from countless interviews and she drank a green juice, apologizing for being sick. Her rescue dog sat patiently near her lap as she spoke about the Western genre. “It’s all men who have a vengeance, something to finish. And the women are either prostitutes on the side or keeping house.”

the homesman

Swank’s character in the film, Mary Bee Cuddy, is described as “too bossy and too plain.” She wears no makeup. She is unmarried. But she has her own homestead and is a rare independent woman on the frontier. Too independent. She asks two different men to marry her in the film, and both say no.

Swank describes “The Homesman” most simply as a feminist movie. It’s why she wanted to make it. In fact, the muted (and beautifully shot) frontier setting disguises issues that we still face today in 2014 -- things like the objectification and trivialization of women, Swank said.

“Wanting to be independent. Wanting to have a life we see fit for ourselves while also walking shoulder-to-shoulder with a man who sees us and respects us. A man who doesn’t put titles on us like ‘bossy.’”

the homesman

Swank loves that Jones, who co-wrote and co-stars in the film, was the one to tell this story -- citing him as somewhat unexpected. “People try and stereotype him all the time. And it just goes to show, we are so much more than people see,” she said, smiling.

“We can never know all the facets someone has inside them. Because we are, ourselves, still trying to figure all of them out,” she said -- perhaps reflecting on herself as much as she was on Jones.

“We should never pigeonhole someone. I think we actually start to believe what we hear. And we are all so much more than any of that, you know?”

“The Homesman” opens in limited cities on Nov. 14, 2014.

'Mockingjay' Director Refused To Use 'Digital Trickery' To Recreate Philip Seymour Hoffman

Philip Seymour Hoffman had just a few scenes left to film for “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay” when he was found dead in his New York City apartment in February.

While the cast and crew took a short break following Hoffman’s untimely death, upon returning, director Francis Lawrence had some critical choices to make regarding how to proceed with the film. As he explained in a HuffPost Live interview on Friday, the filmmaker eventually decided against using computer-generated imagery to finish out Hoffman's remaining scenes.

“He had two scenes with dialogue that were left and we decided we didn't want to try any digital trickery with him, so we rewrote his scenes and gave the dialogue to other actors,” he said.

The choice to forgo CGI was an easy one, Lawrence continued.

“I just think to try to fake a Philip Seymour Hoffman performance would have been catastrophic and I would never want to do that,” he told host Ricky Camilleri.

Lawrence also recalled the actor’s meticulous acting style, which took in-depth rehearsal time to perfect.

“He was constantly sort of grinding away at a scene and was able to dig down and down and down, deeper and really find the dynamics of the relationships that he’s in,” he said. “And then once you’ve done that process then you don't really need many takes at all with him.”

The director juxtaposed Hoffman’s style to his co-star Jennifer Lawrence’s improvisational acting chops. Despite the differences, he said they surprisingly worked well together.

“And Jen is the exact opposite -- where you orient her into a scene, so she knows exactly where in her arc she is emotionally and psychologically -- and she just lands herself there and goes with it," he said.

McDaniel was recently released from prison after serving a 10-year sentence for aggravated child molestation.

Dr. Phil tells her that the only thing worse than poor decision making is lying about it.

“I think people who are parents who have made mistakes are very forgiving, but I think if you make the mistake and then they feel like you blatantly lied to them about it, then they’re less forgiving,” Dr. Phil tells her in the video above. “I think people want you to be completely honest about what mistakes you have made so they can say, ‘Wow. Bill Cosby's 'Late Show With David Letterman' Appearance Canceled

According to Newsday, Bill Cosby's Nov. 19 appearance on "The Late Show With David Letterman" has been canceled. No reason was given for the schedule change, but Regis Philbin will replace Cosby on the broadcast.

A representative for CBS declined to comment when contacted by The Huffington Post (the network does not publicly discuss its booking process). Cosby's representatives did not return repeated requests for comment; this post will be updated if and when a response is received.

This marks Cosby's second canceled booking in the last two weeks, as he dropped out of "The Queen Latifah Show" on Oct. 30. That move came a week after stand-up comedian Hannibal Buress called Cosby "a rapist" on stage in a bit that soon went viral. A spokesperson for "The Queen Latifah Show" told The Hollywood Reporter, "Mr. Cosby’s scheduled appearance on The Queen Latifah Show was postponed at his request and was in no way related to any of our recent or upcoming scheduled guests."

This week, the Internet turned its attention back to Cosby after his team posted a meme generator on his website. The widget was taken down after users uploaded messages that highlighted allegations of rape and sexual abuse brought against the comedian over the last decade.

In addition, Barbara Bowman, one of the women who has alleged Cosby sexually assaulted her, wrote an op-ed in the Washington Post on Thursday recounting encounters with the now 77-year-old comic. She told HuffPost Live in a separate interview that her experiences with Cosby were "sexual encounters that were not consensual on any level."

Cosby was never criminally charged in Bowman's case or any other. In 2006, he settled a civil suit with one of the women.

Johnny Depp Slurs Words In Bizarre Awards Show Speech

Johnny Depp's awkward speech during at the Hollywood Film Awards on Friday has caught fire online. The "Into the Woods" actor took to the stage to honor Shep Gordon, storied talent manager and the subject of Mike Myers' documentary "Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon," and proceeded to slur his speech, swear and wobble around.

"I'm not very good at this kind of thing," Depp said at the start, after commenting on the "weird microphone." Maybe he was just being modest: Depp has presented at numerous awards shows in the past without a hitch, including the 2009 Golden Globes Awards. Perhaps, like Depp said, it was "just one of those nights." Watch the speech above and decide for yourself.
