Keeping Cersei's Nude Scene Secret Costs 'Game Of Thrones' A Fortune

$

Warning! "Game of Thrones" spoilers below.

HBO seems to be building more debt than King's Landing in order to keep Cersei Lannister's nude scene a secret.

Reports indicate that to ensure actress Lena Headey's "walk of shame" scene was kept under wraps, "Game of Thrones" paid upwards of $50,000 per day for a four-day shoot.

TMZ reports more than 200 security guards were hired, local shop owners were paid to shut down and leave the area, cell phones were banned and those involved had to sign confidentiality agreements with fines up to $250,000.

The controversial scene is a big moment in George R. R. Martin's novels. In the books, the High Septon has the once proud Cersei shaved, stripped naked and forced to walk the streets from the Great Sept of Baelor to the Red Keep while the crowds cheer. Though Vulture reports that the Queen Regent will get a dramatic haircut and not be completely shorn, most of the scene seems to be sticking close to the source material.

You can see an image from the set featuring Cersei with short hair here:

Since the scene requires Cersei to be nude in a church at one point, Croatian film commissioners originally wouldn't issue the proper permits for it to happen; however, everything was allowed to proceed after a compromise was reached in which the church scenes will be shot on a fake set.

Ryan Phillippe And Reese Witherspoon Recently Discussed 'Cruel Intentions' With Their Kids

Ryan Phillippe has "gotten to a really great place" with his ex-wife Reese Witherspoon -- so great, in fact, that they recently had a terrific throwback conversation.

Phillippe told HuffPost Live's Ricky Camilleri on Monday about a fun family moment he had with his former spouse and their children -- Ava, 15, and Deacon, 10 -- when Witherspoon was in New York City promoting "Gone Girl" and "Wild."

"We got to meet up as a family and took a walk through Central Park with the kids, and it was funny -- we were reminiscing then because we shot a lot of 'Cruel Intentions' [there], so there we were with Ava and Deacon talking, and they were tripping out on the fact that we were there shooting a movie before they were even a thought in our minds," Phillippe said.

Moments like that little reunion are proof Phillippe and Witherspoon have found an effective way to co-parent after divorce, he added.

"It's going well, and she's happy and remarried, and our kids are incredible. I'm proud of the way we've handled it and who our little people are," Phillippe said.

Phillippe's new film "Catch Hell," which marks his directorial debut, is in theaters Oct. 10.

Behind the Scenes With Singer-Songwriter, Macy Gray

When I sat down with singer-songwriter Macy Gray in the private Barrel Room of City Winery just before her performance there, I was reminded of what it means to be a one-of-a-kind.

From the moment she walked in the room, even before she spoke with her unique voice and rhythm, it was clear that Macy Gray moves to her own muse. Six feet tall and wearing sun glasses, she entered the doorway with a commanding presence, but it was as if she were unaffected by space and time. Almost 30 minutes late, she drifted to the table and made herself comfortable opposite me and the mic without much fuss.

Our interview table in the private Barrel Room set with Dip Flight of Hummus, Babaganouj, Muhamarra with Warm Pita and Buffalo Mozzarella Flat Bread with Fresh Basil and San Marzano Tomato Sauce made from a crust of yeast from the City Winery wine.

Macy answered questions naturally and at ease, as if talking to me were the only thing she had to do that day. We chatted fluidly and got on well, talking about how she came into her own as a woman and artist in her 40s. Incredibly, she started as a songwriter, uncomfortable with her own voice. When she wrote songs for a friend who didn't show for a recording session, she decided hesitantly to record them herself.

In the podcast below, we talked about her creative process, her new album, "The Way", the changing music business, how she keeps her voice in shape, being teased about her voice in during her early school years and her distinct - sacrilegious even! - take on spaghetti.

Enjoy listening below and hearing directly from her about the importance of focusing on what you are good at, and not sweating the rest.

Star Jones On 'The View' Revamp: 'Smart Women Can Disagree Without Being Disagreeable'

Star Jones hopes the latest iteration of "The View" avoids an overload on bickering.

Jones, who was one of the original "View" panelists until her exit in 2006, discussed the series' latest revamp during a visit to HuffPost Live on Monday, when she chatted about her new role as the president of the Professional Diversity Network.

"The View" is famous for its on-air feuds, but Jones hopes the show can move away from that with its new cast, which includes Rosie Perez, Nicole Wallace and the return of former co-host Rosie O'Donnell.

"Smart women can disagree without being disagreeable, and I hope they don't fall into that trap," Jones said. "Disagreeable is not watchable. It's not likable."

Jones is optimistic that the series can find its footing again.

"I think they can do this show and have that show grow in a way where there is a spirited, wonderful debate, but [also] camaraderie," she said. "That's the thing that I missed about 'The View,' is the camaraderie we had initially."

Juliette Binoche Is Ready To Stop Talking About 'Jurassic Park'

Juliette Binoche is "fed up" with constantly being asked about "Jurassic Park."

The Academy Award winner was offered the part in the 1993 film that eventually went to Laura Dern, but Binoche turned it down because she was already committed to the French film "Three Colors: Blue" with director Krzysztof Kieslowski. After Binoche explained that publicly, an endless wave of questions about saying no to "Jurassic Park" followed her to every interview she did, leading her to regret the admission.

"I wish I'd never said that ever in my life," she told HuffPost Live's Ricky Camilleri during a conversation about her new film "A Thousand Times Good Night."

She followed up by offering a heartfelt apology to Steven Spielberg, who directed "Jurassic Park," for creating the story about the film's casting.

"I'm so sorry, Steven. I'm so sorry," she said. "I wish I had done your film so I didn't have to go through that."

And for those eager for more information, don't hold your breath.

"This is the last time I'm answering that question," she concluded. "I won't allow it anymore."

Ryan Murphy's New Series 'American Crime Story' Will Take On The O.J. Simpson Trial

Just when we thought "American Horror Story" couldn't get any scarier, Ryan Murphy has decided to bring us a whole new series based on real-life crimes.

"American Crime Story," a so-called companion series to "American Horror Story," will chronicle real crimes in the same anthology format as Murphy's "AHS." The first story the show will tackle is the O.J. Simpson case.

Season 1, which will be 10 episodes, is titled "American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson" and will be based on Jeffrey Toobin's book, "The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson." The series was originally in development at Fox, but has since moved to FX. The network's CEO, John Landgraf, said in a statement that he hopes the show will "become a series of great true crime-based miniseries." With "True Detective," FX's "Fargo" and the recent return of "Twin Peaks," it seems like the dark crime dramas are bound to take over television.

In a statement, Murphy said he's been looking for the right concept to extend the "AHS" brand. "The O.J. case was as tragic as it was fascinating -- it seemed like everyone had a stake in the outcome," Murphy said. "It was really the beginning of the modern tabloid." The first season will tell the story from the lawyer's perspective while also recounting the LAPD's history with the African-American community.

Murphy, who will co-executive produce with Brad Falchuk, will direct the first episode of the new series, which is set to begin filming early next year. Till then, we're sure "AHS: Freak Show," which premieres on Wednesday, will keep you scared enough.

"American Horror Story: Freak Show" premieres on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 10:00 p.m. ET on FX.

During her interview, in which the model discusses coming up on the big 5-0, Crawford says what we've all been wanting to hear about growing older.

“The secret" to aging, Crawford says, "is that there is no secret." She continues, "Do all the stuff we know: Don’t smoke, get enough sleep, drink plenty of water, find what makes you happy."

Simple enough, right?

Crawford's comments echo statements previously said by fellow models Christy Brinkley and Linda Rodin. The message is clear: aging gracefully is the key to living one's best life.

Think Beyoncé Should Have The Right To Vote? Then You're A Feminist, Says Aziz Ansari

During his Oct. 6 appearance on the "Late Show," comedian Aziz Ansari gave members of David Letterman's audience a hilariously simple litmus test to help determine whether or not they should identify as feminists.

"You're feminist if you go to a Jay Z and Beyoncé concert and you're not, hmm, I feel like Beyoncé should get 23 percent less than Jay Z," Ansari said, to chuckles from the audience. "Also, I don't think Beyoncé should have the right to vote, and why is Beyoncé singing and dancing? Shouldn't she make Jay a steak?"

He explains the reason so many men and women don't choose to identify as feminists is the product of a cultural misunderstanding. The term, Ansari clarifies, really just describes people who believe men and women should have equal rights.

If you believe in equality, the "Parks and Rec" star says, you should call yourself a feminist, if only to uphold the integrity of the English language.

"Because that is how words work," he said.

In case your Facebook newsfeed hadn't yet convinced you, there is now even more evidence that "Gilmore Girls" and "Twin Peaks" are the only television shows that matter right now.

YouTube user Jamison Hermann put together a mash-up of the two series' opening credits, cleverly titled "Lead Me To Twin Peaks." Yay for TV series about small towns!

We must say, Twin Peaks does look a little more inviting with the Carole King tune in the background. Maybe we'll even find a bespectacled troubadour playing guitar on a street corner.

And in case you need a reminder: Here are the original "Twin Peaks" and "Gilmore Girls" intros.

Her name is Marianna Hewitt and she is the beauty and fashion guru behind the blog La La Mer. One look at Hewitt's Instagram photos and it's hard to deny the jaw-dropping resemblance between her and the reality star, regardless of whether they're blond or brunette.

In a May blog post, Hewitt recounted the time she interviewed Kardashian in 2011.

"I have long been a fan of Kim Kardashian since 2006," she wrote. "She is so beautiful, hard working and such a sweet person."

Hewitt made headlines Tuesday when TMZ reported she was photographed out with Michael Strahan Monday night.

'Get On Up's' Chadwick Boseman: Black Actors Are 'Up Against Odds'

When Chadwick Boseman was first approached to play James Brown in "Get On Up," his first thought was "I definitely do not want to do another biopic." The actor was coming off playing Jackie Robinson in "42" and was looking for something "more contemporary, maybe something that was more action oriented," he told HuffPost Live in an interview on Monday.

But black actors are denied such opportunities, Scott Mendelson argued in a piece for Forbes.com. He wrote:

"Chadwick Boseman may be being courted for every would-be biopic of every famous black historical figure around, but why is the obviously talented and painfully charismatic actor not being courted for the kind of projects that routinely end up starring the likes of Ryan Reynolds or Chris Pine?

Boseman recognizes this reality, but doesn't entirely agree.

"There definitely is a starring vehicle, but this is a business and a machine, to a certain degree," he explained. "It's all about the machine realizing that it's a viable thing to make a black actor a star, and I think that's a struggle."

And while the 37-year-old regrets the ongoing challenge of securing certain parts as a black actor, he chooses not to harp on it.

"It's always been a struggle," he said. "I know I'm up against odds that are not necessarily as fair or the same, but I can't focus on it."

Inherent Vice: Just How Important Is a Clear Plot?

$

0
I had a very distinct feeling after leaving the midnight screening of Inherent Vice (and not because it was 2:30 in the morning and I had been subsisting on champagne and diet coke for eight hours). It was reminiscent of something that I couldn't put my finger on. I wasn't sure what the hell had just happened on the screen, and I wasn't sure that I cared. I just knew that whatever it was, was awesome.

Then it hit me. The '90s! I hadn't felt this confused and excited by a film since the '90s. Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut. I had been on a ride similar to the roller coasters I boarded when I went to go see those films.

The plot of Inherent Vice is hard to follow. I started reading the book about a month ago and haven't gotten past the 100th page because I keep going back to read pages over again that I think may unlock some key to digesting the story completely. Paul Thomas Anderson has passed over explanation and gone directly to character studies and storytelling. I'm not sure he completely understands what happens in the film (or book) either. So, at least I am in good company.

The overview goes like this: Doc Sportello (played by Joaquin Phoenix) is a P.I. who takes a case that his ex-girlfriend Shasta (played by Katherine Waterston) asks for his help on. Her new mans' wife has concocted a scheme to commit him to an institution. From there, Doc finds himself in a drug-fueled haze of druggie dentists (Martin Short), a cartel called Golden Fang, a presumed dead saxophonist (Owen Wilson) and a detective that goes by the name of Bigfoot (played perfectly by Josh Brolin).

That being said, once you relax and let the story happen instead of trying to figure out what is going on, Inherent Vice is fantastic.

It's no surprise to anyone that Phoenix hates doing press, and it was no different with this premiere. (I'll save you the details, but he is and always will be the cross-armed kid in chucks that is being forced to sit at the dinner table with his parents friends during press conferences.) But press and performance are worlds apart, and as far as I'm concerned he can throw a temper tantrum at every press conference for eternity as long as we continue to see the electric performances we have all come to expect from him.

I haven't seen a Joaquin Phoenix film since I'm Still Here back in 2010. I was reminded of what a brilliant actor he is. Not only did he bring an innocence to a role that could have been played much darker, but he brought a physical humor to it that was reminiscent of Johnny Depp's Raoul Duke.

Comparatively unknown actress Katherine Waterston holds her own in a handful of scenes. Fan favorite Martin Short does not disappoint and brings the humor of the film to its height during his brief time on camera. Benecio Del Toro is solid as always, and Josh Brolin has undeniable chemistry with Phoenix. The cherry on top of Inherent Vice are the tête-à-tête's between Brolin and Phoenix throughout the film. For my money, it doesn't get much better than that.

Paul Thomas Anderson hasn't made a film like this with an ensemble cast in over a decade. Though films like There Will Be Blood and The Master have their own place in cinema, I have been reminded of what it was that made me enjoy Paul Thomas Anderson films to begin with.

Mariah Carey Hints That Nick Cannon Cheated By Changing Song Lyric

Rumors about what happened between Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon have been swirling since Cannon confirmed his split from the singer back in August. One of the most widespread allegations? That Cannon cheated on Carey with now-single Amber Rose, who he recently signed to his management company NCredible Entertainment. (Rose promptly denied it.)

But while performing in Tokyo over the weekend, Carey herself hinted that her 33-year-old estranged husband may have stepped out on her during their six-year marriage.

Performing the Billie Holiday classic "Don't Explain," Carey can be heard singing "I know you cheated, motherf--ker" instead of the original lyric, "And I know you cheat/ Right or wrong, don't matter." (Head over to TMZ to hear the clip.)

The couple has been married since 2008 and have 3-year-old twins together, Monroe and Moroccan. On Monday, a source told E! News that 45-year-old singer is definitely moving forward with the divorce. "She has made up her mind," the source told the site. "She is definitely divorcing him."

Gloria Steinem On The Great Part Of Feminism: 'We Have Each Other's Backs'

Two of feminism's biggest icons chatted, reminisced and debated Monday night with a theater full of people listening in.

On Oct. 6 feminist author and scholar-in-residence bell hooks interviewed her old friend Gloria Steinem at The New School about how far the feminist movement has brought women, and how much further we have to go.

The two women, who are among the pioneers of second wave feminism, noted that the feminist identity can sometimes be a difficult label to wear. When hooks asked what has helped Steinem on her long journey of feminism and what has become the most important, she answered simply: "You, bell."

gloria steinem
Gloria Steinem and bell hooks in conversation at Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts.

"[Feminism is] about friends and sisters and community," Steinem went on. "The good part and the great part is that it's about chosen family. We have each other's backs and that is so precious. It's not that our birth families aren't important it's just important in a different way. In the movement and in friendships we get to pick people with similar interests and values."

Both hooks and Steinem agreed that the continued support from one another has helped the feminist movement make progress. As hooks said early in the interview, "If you can buy shoes together, you can do politics together." In other words, similar interests and values forge paths and movements -- and bring support to one another when it's most needed.

Towards the end of the talk, a young woman in the audience asked Steinem how she unfailingly attempts to dismantle the patriarchy day in and day out. "Everyone worries about what we should be doing. Do whatever you can," Steinem urged the woman.

Whether it's joining an activist group or getting involved on a local level, Steinem reminded the audience that change doesn't happen when looking at the big picture, it starts with small steps.

Steinem finished the discussion by telling the crowd to tackle feminist issues "one situation at a time. If you think about it all at once you will become paralyzed. Go for the particular."
