Earlier this summer, fresh from college graduation, Emma Watson, was named a U.N. Women Goodwill Ambassador. Though the ripples of her involvement over the past six months can be seen online (crashing the U.N. website, using Twitter to denounce a sexist politician in Turkey or respond to the gender politics of the recent celebrity nude photo hack), Watson’s power in person is an entirely different matter.

Teens Sing Along To Nicki Minaj's 'Anaconda' Video, Then Question Its Portrayal Of Women

So, we've heard a lot about Nicki Minaj's "Anaconda" music video over the past month.

But what does its target audience think? Get a fresh perspective on the controversial clip by watching a group of teenagers react to the video in the latest episode of the Fine Bros. "Teens React" series.

Their takes on the video are wrought with nervous laughter and animated facial expressions.

"I should have brought holy water today!" says 17-year-old Kaelyn.

But after admitting the song is super catchy, the teens quickly turn their discussion to the portrayal of women in Minaj's video, as well as the objectification of women in mainstream culture.

"[Minaj is] putting herself out there...to expose herself the way she wants to, and she's expressing herself," says Rachel, 18. "But at the same time, she's not, because she's over-sexualized and she's objectified."

Tori, 16, takes the analysis one step further:

"[Music videos like "Anaconda"] make men feel like they're entitled to that body, because they see it all the time."

Jennifer Lopez, 45, in 'Booty' Video: Thanks for Showing Women They Can Be Ageless

$
0
0
JLo, you just redefined the image that the world has of a 45-year-old woman. You celebrate the sexual power of a beautiful big booty in your new "Booty" video and destroy the idea that women over 40 are over.

Jennifer Lopez, when you and Iggy Azalea, 24, shake up a storm, singing and showing off your womanly backsides in your just-released video, "Booty," you're doing more than just getting sexy.

Yes, you've created the most sensual music video of 2014 and maybe ever, but you've also made a statement about female sexuality and beauty that's historically empowering.

Since the dawn of time, women have been celebrated for their youthful beauty. Models typically start their careers between 16 and 18 years old, and until the last decade, they were usually finished by 30.

Actresses have long complained that roles dried up once they hit 40. Male movie stars have typically been paired with much younger women, as their romantic on screen partners.

Hey, in real life, the phenomenon of middle-aged men dumping their wives for much younger, fresher, prettier and more fertile, women is well-known.

Fortunately, in 2014, Hollywood leading ladies like Sofia Vergara, 42, Halle Berry, 48, Jennifer Aniston, 45, Nicole Kidman, 47, Sandra Bullock, 50, Gwyneth Paltrow, 41, and Cameron Diaz, 42, have hit their 40s and more and look even more beautiful and are continuing to be cast in strong roles and command box office results. This new development in the entertainment world is changing the general perception of what it means to be a woman over 40 .

Thank the Lord!

JLo Twerks Alongside Iggy in 'Booty' Video

But now JLo, with this dramatically filmed "Booty" video, takes the idea that a woman over 40 is less attractive and desirable and annihilates it!

Jennifer has NEVER looked more stunning and her booty and body are in phenomenal shape! "Booty" shows "Jenny from the Block" in a series of skimpy swimsuits, all cut high over the backside, revealing plenty of naked tush.

On top of that, JLo has paired herself with young hot female rap star, Iggy Azalea, and she literally goes booty to booty with her. The two stars rub butts, slide up each others backsides and twerk together.

There's not an iota of difference in the toned youthful appearances of their bottoms. They are both perfect. Not a speck of cellulite.

If anything, Jennifer's booty and thighs are even better and more muscular than Iggy's!

Listen, JLo is one of the most beautiful women in the world. And when it comes to being in shape and having terrific muscle tone, she clearly has a genetic head start. Not every woman over 40 can look as gorgeous and sexy as JLo even if they work out. We have to accept that.

JLo "Buckles Down" to Get That Booty

But, I can tell you that Jennifer does work out -- almost daily -- in order to look as bootyfull as she does in "Booty." She wouldn't look like JLo either, if she didn't work at it seriously.

She has explained in interviews that "you got to work out, you got to watch what you eat. It's a job," and admits that when it comes to exercise, "I don't love it," but she makes herself, "buckle down."

Nevertheless, until recently, most women probably didn't think that it was even possible to look as sexy, stunning and shapely at 45, as Jennifer Lopez does. Most probably would also never have even considered that it was acceptable behavior to twerk and shake their booties, even in private or at a dance club. But, why shouldn't it be? JLo points that out, by example.

What Jennifer is doing is demonstrating that, if a woman wants to and can spend time in the gym and can stick to a mostly healthy diet (JLo indulges too sometimes), she can continue to look strong, sexy and in shape, at any age.

Age need not diminish a woman's physical power and desirability.

Jennifer has never looked better or more in charge of her life and career. She has been in total command of her career as she has produced and then promoted her recently released album, A.K.A., most recently at the MTV VMAs, The Billboard Music Awards and Fashion Rocks.

Jennifer Lopez may be enjoying and using her fabulous form to entertain, sell music and to express herself creatively, but she's also a role model to other career women.

Her message is that your career can also keep blossoming and building at 45 and beyond.

She's butt-kicking age to the curb as a limit on any woman. Now that's a powerful message!

Kim Kardashian Doesn't Deserve To Have Her Nude Photos Stolen More Than Anyone Else Does

$

It is a truth universally acknowledged by the law that stealing nude photographs is a crime. However, according to some, when those naked pictures are of Kim Kardashian, she was asking for it.

Over the weekend, another round of stolen photos were leaked (likely by the same people), this time targeting celebrities like Gabrielle Union, Vanessa Hudgens, Hope Solo, and yes, Kim Kardashian. While a similar incident with Jennifer Lawrence's photographs was met largely with public outcry and sympathy, Kardashian has instead been subject to vitriol and victim-blaming.

As the Washington Post's Justin Moyer pointed out, commenters on Twitter were quick to wonder why we should even feel bad for Kardashian, because, presumably, she enjoyed her photos being stolen:

Here are the facts: Yes, Kim Kardashian once had a sex tape that was released publicly. Yes, she's posted photographs of herself on Twitter in revealing outfits. No, she doesn't deserve to have her private property stolen and splashed across the Internet. Yes, she is a victim of a crime.

We tend to have little sympathy for women who strive to be in the spotlight in a way we don't deem acceptable. We label them "attention whores," and ridicule them -- yet we tune into their shows and look at their sexy photos and google their sex tapes.

The difference between what these hackers did and a sexy selfie posted by Kardashian on Twitter, is that in the latter, she had agency and power. In the other, her privacy was violated, used to demean and degrade her publicly.

As The Telegraph's Daisy Buchanan wrote: "The fact that Kim chooses to reveal her body so often should make this argument clearer, not more confusing. When Kim wants to do it, it’s her choice. When she doesn’t want to do it -- yet someone does it for her, without her permission, or consent -- it’s invasive and distressing."

You don't have to keep up with the Kardashians to realize that a crime is a crime is a crime.

Kenan Thompson Reportedly Leaving 'SNL' After This Season [UPDATE]

The upcoming 40th season of "Saturday Night Live" will reportedly be Kenan Thompson' last as a repertory player on the show, this according to TMZ. The site wrote Monday that Thompson is set to leave the show before next season to focus on other projects. (Per TMZ, Thompson was going to leave after Season 39, but Lorne Michaels, the show's executive producer, convinced him to stay.)

An "SNL" spokesperson, however, denied the TMZ claims, writing that the report was inaccurate "as the season hasn’t even started and cast decisions aren’t made until the end of the season." A request for comment made to Thompson's representative was not immediately returned.

Thompson has been a cast member on "SNL" since 2003, and broke the record for longest serving black cast member. Of the current cast, he's been on the show the longest. Thompson also highlighted the show's lack of diversity last year when he told TV Guide that he would no longer play female characters in sketches. When asked during an interview with EW last year if he would ever leave the show, Thompson said, "I'm never leaving."

"Saturday Night Live" returns this weekend with host Chris Pratt and musical guest Ariana Grande.

This piece has been updated to include comment from an "SNL" spokesperson.

Elle Fanning is a brunette.

The 16-year-old actress debuted darker locks and a blunt, shorter cut Sunday at the premiere of "The Boxtrolls" at the Universal CityWalk in Hollywood. Fanning dyed her blond hair brown for an upcoming movie role, according to E! News, and is still getting used to which clothing hues work best with her new look.

For the premiere, Fanning chose a two-piece black ensemble by Oscar de la Renta.

In June, the star told Teen Vogue that her beauty regimen is laid-back.

"I just feel like it's better, looking fresh," she said. "It's also sexier not wearing any makeup at all. Like, honestly, if you talk to guys, they'll all think that."

Andre 3000 Talks Outkast Biopic, Studying Jimi Hendrix and Snagglepuss

The following article is provided by Rolling Stone.

By STEVE APPLEFORD

Rapper Andre Benjamin worked obsessively on his startling portrayal of Jimi Hendrix in the new film "Jimi: All Is By My Side," and he already has ideas about a potential biopic for his group Outkast. "It would be great to make an Outkast movie right now, but instead of really serious, make it a full comedy — like Kevin Hart would play Big Boi," he said of his rapping partner last night. And as himself? "We should cast somebody stupid — like Leonardo [DiCaprio]."

Andre 3000 on the Outkast Tour: 'I Don't Get Anything From Performing'

Benjamin (AKA Andre 3000) was on a panel Sunday night following a preview screening of the Hendrix film at the Grammy Museum in L.A., where he was joined by writer-director John Ridley and producer Danny Bramson. Asked what he’d seriously like to see included in any film about Outkast, he said, "Probably the importance of balance within the group. One of the biggest things that kills me is when people try to put Big Boi down."

Andre 3000 Shreds as Hendrix in Trailer for 'Jimi: All Is By My Side'

"The chemistry that made Outkast was the balance," the actor/rapper tells Rolling Stone. "And honestly, Big's a much sharper rapper than I am. If I was going to a battle, I'd definitely bet on him instead of me."

In "Jimi: All Is By My Side," set for a Sept. 26th release, Benjamin takes on a crucial year in the life of the iconic rock guitarist, as Hendrix was being discovered and embraced by the London music scene in 1966-67. He lost 20 pounds for the role "because I am not naturally a skinny man," studied Hendrix interview footage, learned to play guitar left-handed before four weeks of rehearsals and six weeks of filming.

"To get that gait, to move in that way, I had to feel that way. I worked out twice a week, and ate just enough calories to keep myself going," Benjamin recalled. "Guitar training was strenuous because I’m a right-handed guitar-player. Left-handed is completely opposite. It’s like walking backwards."

He also recreates the relaxed, cosmic speech patterns of the guitarist, who died in 1970. To get there, he began each day with an impression of the Hanna-Barbera cartoon character Snagglepuss. "He sounds Jimi-ish," he said, to laughs from the audience.

Ridley, an Academy Award-winner this year for his "12 Years a Slave" screenplay, said he cast Benjamin because "he has the look, he’s a musician, he’s so impactful on the cultural landscape," he said. "I felt this isn’t about trying to attract the right actor for the role. This is about trying to attract the right person who embodies a certain spirit."

The film explores the impact of two women on Hendrix’s life and career (Hayley Atwell as Kathy Etchingham and Imogen Poots as Linda Keith), along with the faith of manager Chas Chandler, former Animals bassist, and growing respect from his peers. "He would not be the Jimi Hendrix that we know if not for the people around him; if not for his contemporaries; if it wasn’t for the Who [and] Eric Clapton," Benjamin said.

Rolling Stone’s 50 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs of All Time

"When you first start, you’re nervous. I remember the first Outkast shows I wouldn’t move at all," he explained. "It takes you a minute to get comfortable in front of people. With Jimi, the story is about these two women that were in his life that really in so many ways helped make this guy. He didn’t have a lot of confidence in his voice. He actually didn’t want to be the frontman in a band. He just wanted to be the guitarist."

For Ridley, the facts of the Hendrix story already had "emotional velocity," he said. "We’re here today because 47 years later, we’re still inspired by his music and that time and that era. That’s the story I wanted to tell."

Colin Farrell & Vince Vaughn Cast As Leads In 'True Detective' Season 2

Just in from HBO: Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell have been cast as the leads in "True Detective" for Season 2. The HBO press release made no mention of the show's female lead, but did allow that "additional casting will be announced as it is confirmed."

The official announcement from HBO ends months of speculation about who would replace Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson on the show for its second season. Back in July, Deadline.com reported that Farrell was in talks for one of the main roles; in August, various trade reports attached Vaughn to the project as well.

HBO had remained tight-lipped on the stars' involvement, but Farrell was not as quiet. In a widely circulated interview with The Sunday World published on Sept. 20, Farrell said he was starring on "True Detective" for its second season.

"I know it will be eight episodes and take around four or five months to shoot," he said. "I know very little about it, but we're shooting in the environs of Los Angeles which is great. It means I get to stay at home and see the kids."

According to the HBO press release, this run of "True Detective" will focus on three police officers and a "career criminal" all of whom "must navigate a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of a murder." Farrell will reportedly play a character named Ray Velcoro, "a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn." Vaughn is apparently the career criminal, Frank Semyon, who is in "danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner."

Justin Lin, of "Fast and Furious" franchise fame, will direct the first two episodes. Series creator Nic Pizzolatto returns as writer.

As for the show's female lead, actresses such as Jessica Chastain, Elisabeth Moss and Rachel McAdams were once rumored for the role. According to TheWrap, Rosario Dawson, Brit Marling, Malin Akerman, Oona Chaplin, Kelly Reilly, Jamie Alexander and Jessica Biel are also in contention for the part.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Made A Video About Feminism And It's Awesome

$

Joseph Gordon-Levitt wants you to start talking about feminism. Specifically, your relationship to the word.

In the video "RE: Feminism," posted to the YouTube channel for HitRecord, Gordon-Levitt's collaborative production company, the actor explores the many different interpretations of feminism he has discovered since telling Ellen DeGenerous in early 2014 that he identified as a feminist.

Gordon-Levitt mentions the overwhelming web response to his declaration that he is "absolutely" a feminist and a later interview with The Daily Beast, in which he celebrated feminism as a "benefit to society."

"This interview got a lot of attention on the Internet. Certainly there was a lot of support," he says. "Then there are people out there who are against the word feminism, and who take it to mean a lot of different things. I wasn't as aware of this."

Gordon-Levitt says he stumbled across the Tumblr "Women Against Feminism," featuring self-pronounced "anti-feminist" women explaining why they don't need feminism.

"I found it very interesting looking through that site and seeing what people had to say," he says. "There were some people that were saying that feminism made sense in the past but it doesn't anymore because men and women are equal now. I'm no expert, but I think the facts are pretty contrary to this."

Gordon-Levitt lists the "definite disparity" between men and women's salaries in the U.S. as "one of many examples" of how men and women aren't equal just yet.

He also suggests that some people fundamentally misinterpret feminism as meaning "that it's not right for a woman to do things that are traditionally a 'woman's place,' like stay home and raise kids." He explains that his own mother was both an active participant in second-wave feminism (which he deftly distinguishes from first-wave feminism) and a full-time parent:

So not only was feminism something that my mom taught me about, motherhood is right at the core of what feminism is or isn't. A lot of people who don't identify with that word feel like that word is somehow against motherhood. Personally, I don't take it that way. For me, as a feminist, it should be up to the woman to decide if she wants to be a mom... If that's what she wants to do full-time, that's awesome, that's what my mom did. But if she wants to go out and have a career apart from being a mom, then she should be able to do that as well, and that's to the benefit of everybody.

Gordon-Levitt invites viewers to submit video blogs answering the question "What does the word feminism mean to you? Would you call yourself a feminist? Why, or why not?" Some submissions may be featured in an episode of "HitRecord On TV" next season on Pivot.

Women -- feminists and non-feminists alike -- have discussed the complexity and interaction of women's issues for decades. Now, JGL wants to join that dialogue thoughtfully and is encouraging others to do the same.

Promoting a definition of feminism that is compatible with all of women's choices and experiences is "complicated, and I grant that it's complicated, and I think it's a really great thing for us all to be talking about," Gordon-Levitt says. Key words? "Us all."

Our hearts are full.

Everything's Coming Up Rosie (and Whoopi and Nicolle) on The View

$
0
0
The View garnered its best ratings in eight years for its 18th season premiere last week, after a dramatic on screen and behind the scenes facelift. For the first time since it began in 1997, The View premiered without its star, creator, and executive producer, Barbara Walters, who retired in May.

Co-host Sherri Shepherd was ousted after seven years, in which her only noteworthy contribution was wondering if the earth was flat. Co-host Jenny McCarthy received the ax after one lackluster season. Only the panel's moderator, Whoopi Goldberg, survived the bloodbath. Rosie O'Donnell -- who famously left the show in 2007 after an on-air spat with then co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck -- rejoined the panel.

The new cast is rounded out with actress and activist, Rosie Perez, and political commentator and former George W. Bush White House Communications Director, Nicolle Wallace. The show also has a new studio, new set, new logo, and new executive producer for the first time in 17 years.

Over the years, and in particular since O'Donnell left, The View has fallen flat and failed to generate much buzz. For a time, they were able to get by with whatever crazy talking point from the RNC Hasselbeck was spouting, and liberal co-host Joy Behar's predictable abhorrent reaction to it. Once Behar left and Hasselbeck was fired, the show became a ghost of its former lightening rod self.

With this new cast, The View stands to reverse its slow march to irrelevance. The first day began with an inauspicious start when the co-hosts spent most of the hour fawning over each other, in an uneasy love fest. Meanwhile, the audience waited with baited breath for any sort of fireworks.

The second day didn't disappoint when sparks flew between O'Donnell and Wallace.

O'Donnell took umbrage with Wallace's comment that President Obama "doesn't like people." Wallace meant that the president isn't a natural people person like former President Bill Clinton, who never met a hand he didn't want to shake. O'Donnell countered by comparing Wallace's remark to Kanye West's infamous statement that President Bush "doesn't care about black people."

With that one exchange, there was hope for The View's future again. Although O'Donnell's argument fell flat, it made for spirited conversation and good television. It's what makes O'Donnell compelling to watch. Unlike many plastic parrots on daytime television, O'Donnell wears her raw emotions on her face. Love her or hate her, right or wrong, she's real.

O'Donnell is also unpredictable. Everyone expected O'Donnell to reserve most of her sparring for Wallace. But on the third day she mixed it up with Goldberg instead, over whether it's okay to shame your child in public. This time Goldberg was the odd woman out when both Wallace and Perez agreed with O'Donnell that it's never acceptable.

Serious moments as well as lighter ones peppered the first week. This was a huge improvement from the dull conversations of past seasons. In recent years, it wasn't uncommon for Goldberg to look as if she'd rather be anywhere else. This week Goldberg was a lively and engaged participant.

Another memorable moment centered on a study out of the UK that said most women can't identify their vagina in a drawing. A huge drawing appeared on-screen and Goldberg proceeded to give an anatomy lesson, while cracking jokes in the process, causing Wallace to quip, "I can't believe this is my job now!"

The highlight of the first week, however, was Goldberg and Billy Crystal's tribute to the late Robin Williams. It was poignant to hear them reminisce about their friend, and touching to see the normally unflappable Goldberg tear up multiple times. The flashback footage of the trio during their opening performances for Comic Relief through the years was brilliant and worthy of an entire show in its own right.

Although The View turned in an impressive first week's performance, the show still has minor wrinkles to iron out:

-Wallace and Perez are awkward interviewers, but should improve as they gain experience.

-Wallace and Perez appear deferential to Goldberg and O'Donnell, rather than as equals.

-Goldberg and O'Donnell both come across as the moderator.

-Wallace needs a haircut or a barrette. Every few seconds she runs her hands through her hair to pull it away from her eyes and face.

Despite these minor wrinkles, The View's makeover was a success. The first week of Season 18 marked a new beginning for a show that had lost its way the last few years. Now The View is water cooler fodder again which not many shows can say after 18 seasons.
