Be careful you don't drop your phone in that water, J.Lo!

Jennifer Lopez relaxed in the bathtub in preparation for her extravagant 45th birthday bash on July 24. With nothing but soap suds and red and yellow rose petals to cover her, Lopez shared the steamy selfie via Instagram, writing, "Soaking it all in... #birthdaygirl #itsmyparty #quietbeforethestorm":

Later that evening, Lopez snapped a glamorous selfie from her star-studded party in Southampton, New York, writing, "Let the games begin! #itsmyparty #funtimes #birthdaygirl #aintnuthingbutanumber":

About 100 guests gathered in celebration of the special day, including Andy Cohen, Fat Joe, Kelly Ripa, Leah Remini, French Montana, Khloe Kardashian and Scott Disick. "Dancing with the Stars" pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy was also a notable guest, as Lopez and Chmerkovskiy have yet to confirm their rumored romance.

Check out some more photos from the evening:

Turning 55, Kevin Spacey's on Fire

2014-07-25-Spacey1.jpg
When Kevin Spacey made a recent appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, the host came up with the perfect skit to highlight the actor's many talents: Spacey headed up a barbershop quartet that put a doo-wop twist on the Jason Derulo hit, Talk Dirty ("your booty don't need explaining, all I really need to understand is... when you talk dirty to me, tra-la-la-la-la-la, tra-la-la-la-la-la-la-la"). The reason the skit worked so well is because Kevin--who happens to have a great singing voice -- is a master at infusing his regular guy demeanor with a seedy, deadpan, something's-not-quite-right-here undercurrent.

These days, Spacey -- who turns 55 on Saturday, July 26 -- has been amassing awards by utilizing that gift to full effect on the Netflix political drama, "House of Cards." On "Cards", he plays Francis Underwood, a superficially charming, down-home U.S. congressman from Louisiana who's willing to wade deep into the ethical swamp -- scheming, double-crossing, even committing murder--to amass more power. Spacey's performance, marked by an oily Southern drawl and an air of lethal refinement, makes the series binge-watch-worthy all by itself.

2014-07-25-SpaceyAmericanBeauty.jpg

But the most infamous, morally-squishy Everyman on Spacey's resume is Lester Burnham, the suburban guy in the midst of a midlife meltdown in "American Beauty" (1999). As Burnham, Spacey -- who won an Academy Award for the role -- pulls off an arc that has his character starting off at Point A: an uptight, henpecked, professionally-downtrodden schmo; and winding up at Point Z: a freewheeling, pot-smoking, sexually libertine, rules-be-damned renegade. It's an emotional transformation that few actors could pull off so convincingly- and with just the right amount of black humor.

2014-07-25-SpaceyUsualSuspects.jpg

Another thread connecting Spacey's most memorable characters is a fierce sense of ambition. This can be the ambition to rule the world (like his character in "Cards"), break loose from ordinary life (like Lester Burnham), or keep a criminal empire free from police intrusion -- as in 1995's "The Usual Suspects," the movie that truly launched Spacey. In "Suspects", Kevin plays Roger "Verbal" Kint, a ruthless, fast-talking con artist, who -- while under the guise of being a cooperating witness in a police investigation--gets away with a horrifically violent crime. (Interestingly, "Suspects" -- like "Cards" and "Beauty" -- is yet another instance where Spacey breaks the fourth wall and narrates the story directly to the audience.)

2014-07-25-SpaceySeven.2.jpg

Clearly, Spacey could relate to the deep-seated drive in each of these characters--as well as the finance hotshot he played in "Margin Call," and even his serial killer in 1995's "Seven." In a very real way, he himself was possessed. Starting out as an actor, Spacey set himself a high bar for success and was determined to leap over it.

As he told GQ last year about his journey to an Oscar, "I put on some very serious blinders and I got on the horse and I galloped toward seeing whether I could build a film career for myself... I was on a kind of mission to see if I could achieve something. To achieve a career at a certain level and... playing with the kind of people I wanted to play with. I wanted to play in a certain league."

And once he proved he could act with the best of them, Spacey was anxious to duplicate his winning record on-stage. In 2003, he became the artistic director at London's Old Vic theatre, and later started his own foundation to help aspiring actors from around the world. "I didn't want to spend ten years pursuing the same dream so doggedly with my own ambition about myself," said Spacey about his decision to not try to rack up as many Oscar trophies as possible. "I didn't want to be one of those guys on the Top 10 lists. I didn't want to do a lot of movies I shouldn't do, or make movies for money and prestige."

But Spacey hasn't given up film acting for good. He's not even opposed to taking on roles that aren't exactly geared toward Oscar night. Next up for the actor? Later this year, he'll appear in the comedy sequel, Horrible Bosses 2. However bad or good that particular outing is, Spacey's presence will surely elevate it.

2014-07-25-SpaceySmiling.jpg

Happy Birthday, Kevin!

Audra McDonald Opens Up About Past Suicide Attempt

Audra McDonald is a successful singer and actress, yet the "Private Practice" star reveals there was a time in her life when she wanted to end it all.

In a new interview with ABC's "Popcorn with Peter Travers," the 44-year-old spoke about the depression she battled in college, which led to a suicide attempt.

"When I was at Juilliard, I had a suicide attempt. I tried to slit my wrist," the six-time Tony winner revealed, adding that she's incredibly thankful she found help through her school.

"When someone is suicidal, one of the first things you have to do is to protect them from themselves," she explained. "[Juilliard] had a mental health facilitator there, a therapist there and they checked me into a mental health hospital where I was for a month and got me the help I needed."

McDonald went on to say that antidepressants helped her in her recovery, as did the professional opportunities that followed after her hospitalization.

Jeff Bridges Reveals The Key To A Long And Happy Marriage

$

Jeff Bridges has been married to his wife Susan for nearly four decades, all while working in an industry known for it's failed marriages: Hollywood.

So it makes sense that Thursday, while doing a Reddit Ask Me Anything, the Academy Award winner was questioned about his secret to marital success. "I read that you've been married to your wife since 1977. To what do you attribute the success of your marriage in an industry notoriously hard on relationships?" the redditor asked.

In response, Bridges revealed three ways to maintain a happy, long-lasting marriage.

1. Loving someone means supporting them.

"This industry is tough on relationships. I've always thought that my wife should have a credit up alongside mine, because I couldn't do what I do without her support. And like the questioner asked, or said, we've been married since 1977, we knew each other for 2 years before that, so she's been able to do all these films with me and we've managed to get through them all together."

2. Little things, like asking how their day was, matter.

"The toughest thing about making movies is being apart from your family. One of the things I try my best to do is call my wife every day, to keep up to speed with what's going on in her life. And tell her what's going on with mine. Often when you're apart from your loved one like that for so long, your connection kind of atrophies unless you keep engaged, even if it's small everyday kind of stuff."

3. Above all else, love each other.

"But another aspect of keeping a marriage together, I think it's important to - you'll think I'm silly - but to love each other, which begs the question: "what is love?" Words that come to mind are openness, understanding, gentleness, kindness, and kind of working on those things, because everyone has a light and a dark side, I think, selfish aspects, and to kind of recognize those in each other and realize that we are going to have our own particular story at any given time, and those stories, they might not be the ultimate truth but they are certainly true for each of us, so to understand that we are each going through our particular version of reality, to respect that, and to nurture being in love, you know? To nurture that."

Wise words from a wise man.

Joaquin Phoenix Rumored For Marvel's Doctor Strange

Back in December of 2013, Variety revealed that DC Comics and Warner Bros. were hoping to secure the services of Joaquin Phoenix to play Lex Luthor in the Batman versus Superman film that would eventually be called "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice." That role went to Jesse Eisenberg, but it appears Phoenix may have found his superhero franchise anyway. According to TheWrap's Jeff Sneider, Phoenix is under consideration to star as Doctor Strange in the forthcoming Marvel feature that Scott Derrickson will direct. HuffPost Entertainment contacted representatives for Phoenix and Derrickson to confirm the rumor; this post will be updated if and when they respond.

The search for Doctor Strange has focused on some of Hollywood's best actors over 30. In June, Deadline.com revealed that Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch were on the studio's short list. It was also reported around the same time that Oscar winner Jared Leto was under consideration. Cumberbatch, who is at Comic-Con for the first time this year, fanned the flames of the rumor mill on Thursday when he made a joke that referenced Doctor Strange.

Who is Doctor Strange? Allow Wikipedia to guide the way for non-comic book devotees:

Doctor Strange is a former neurosurgeon who serves as the Sorcerer Supreme — the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats.

Marvel is expected to make a surfeit of announcements during the studio's Comic-Con panel on Saturday evening. Whether the casting of Phoenix as Doctor Strange is revealed remains to be seen, but file this under where there's smoke, there's fire. As Indiewire's The Playlist points out, a Connecticut resident spotted Phoenix at a local comic book store during a break in filming from Woody Allen's new movie, which Phoenix is shooting now. The actor was apparently searching for Doctor Strange comics:

Jennette McCurdy Rejects Role Model Label In Reddit Rant

Jennette McCurdy does not want to be a role model.

The Nickelodeon actress took to Reddit to write a lengthy rant about how she isn't a role model and doesn't want to be on Thursday, July 24.

"There was a time when I tried to live up to the aggrandizing title, that pedestal of a thing," she wrote. "Maybe it wasn't so much that I was trying to live up to it. Perhaps I thought I could and I thought I was supposed to, so I gave it my best shot. It's fine, I can admit it. Back in my adolescence, I was more amiable, bubbly, and on lightly humid days, maybe even flouncy. I was role model material and then some."

McCurdy, who began acting in 2000 and landed a role on the hit TV series "iCarly" in 2007, specifically noted her issue with how celebrities are portrayed by "the falsified standard set by the bubblegum industry." She said role models are role models because of how they live their lives, but "none of you know how I live my life."

But in order to be thought of as a real, true role model, I believe you have to know a person and their actions, inside and out. Calling a celebrity a role model is like calling a stranger a role model. The knowledge you have of a celebrity is no more than a caricature drawn by media tastemakers specializing in selling you an image you’re dying to buy. It’s good to have heroes, but you have to look for them in the right places. They say don’t look for true love in a bar, well I say, don’t look for role models on screens.

The 22-year-old has dealt with growing up and living life in the public eye. In March, racy photos of the "iCarly" star surfaced on the Internet. She suggested her ex, NBA player Andre Drummond, was behind the leak.

Mom With Cancer Helps Beatles Superfan Son Meet Ringo Starr

A mom’s determination to create and share as many special moments with her kids as possible led to a meeting of a lifetime for her 5-year-old son.

With his mom proudly looking on, the boy -- a Beatles superfan -- got to spend some time with drumming legend Ringo Starr. It was an evening that they'll not soon forget.

(Story continues below.)

Cali Tobias has been battling cancer for years, and every moment that she has to spend with her children is extremely precious.

“I need to make sure I have as many fun memories with my kids as I can while I’m still here,” Tobias, who has been diagnosed with breast cancer four times and is now battling ovarian cancer, told ABC News.

That desire led Tobias to pick up the phone to see if she could get special tickets to see Ringo Starr perform in San Jose, California, earlier this month.

Tobias’ son, King, adores The Beatles. According to local news outlet KFSN-TV, King has been listening to the Fab Four since he was just a toddler. His room is covered in Beatles’ memorabilia and he’s even started to learn to play some of the band’s tunes on the guitar.

Given his love for The Beatles, his mom knew it’d be a real treat for King to see Starr in concert. But in an awesome twist, Tobias wasn’t just able to get tickets to the show; she and King were also invited backstage to meet Starr himself.

In Tobias' videos of the special meeting, Starr gives King a big hug before the boy pulls out his guitar to play a song.

King also got the chance to play on Starr’s drum set. “Ringo Starr never lets anyone touch his drums but he wanted King ... to play HIS DRUMS!” Tobias exclaimed in a caption that accompanied this adorable Instagram shot:

“To see my son’s face light up like that was everything to me because that’s what I want,” Tobias told ABC News of the extraordinary evening. “I want these memories with my children.”

James Franco took to Instagram to jokingly congratulate his brother, Dave, on his relationship with "Neighbors" co-star, Zac Efron.

The "Pineapple Express" star shared the following image, which appeared to be a screenshot of a HollywoodLife article announcing that his brother and Efron were dating. As E! Online pointed out, however, a close look at the details of the image, however, reveals the name "Dave Francock" alongside of headshot of James, guaranteeing that the supposed "article" is a fake.

Franco's caption reads: "Effron and My brother, dating!!!!!! Congrats, boys! I'm so happy for you!!!"

Franco, who wraps his run in Broadway's "Of Mice and Men" on June 27, is no stranger to stirring controversy on Instagram. In May, the actor posted a nearly-nude photo of himself (with his genitals covered) on the social media outlet, then promptly deleted it.

Efron has most recently been romantically linked with actress Michelle Rodriguez.

Gwen Stefani Shares A Sweet Breastfeeding Photo On Instagram

She's a rock star -- and a proud mom, too.

Gwen Stefani posted the below photo to Instagram on Friday, showing her with her 5-month-old baby boy, Apollo Bowie Flynn. In the snapshot, the 44-year-old appears to be breastfeeding her son beside a gorgeous, mountainous landscape in Switzerland.

Apollo can be seen wrapped in a white and red-starred swaddling blanket by aden + anais. The company just teamed up with AIDS charity (RED) and a portion of the proceeds from sales of the blanket pictured in Stefani's pic (and other products) will go to fight AIDS, notes People.

Other celebrities have shared similarly inspiring nursing photos with their fans before. In June, models Natalia Vodianova and Jaime King shared intimate photos of their breastfeeding. King added a pointed statement with her post, writing: "These are the moments a mother lives for. Breastfeeding should not be taboo -- and bottle feeding should not be judged -- it's ALL fun for the whole family:)."

Megan Fox Is Not Thrilled About The 'Girl Power' That Was Cut From 'TMNT'

"Cowabunga dudette?" Apparently, not so much in the upcoming "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movie.

"TMNT" star Megan Fox, who plays journalist April in the film, told HitFlix at San Diego Comic-Con that "a lot of girl power ended up on the cutting room floor, unfortunately."

"I had a really awesome scene where I was fighting The Foot Clan, but I think they were like, 'Why would a tiny journalist be able to kick so much ass?'" Fox said. "So that got cut. But I have a moment, Shredder and I have a moment. Maybe it's badass, you tell me when you see it."

Say it ain't so, Megan! As adult women who grew up as "TMNT" fans, we were hoping to see a bit more lady ass-kicking in this updated version. And as Jezebel's Callie Beusman points out, it's not really stretching the mind too far to imagine a petite woman winning a fight when we're already being asked to accept the reality of human-like giant turtles.

But at least the HitFlix interview gave Fox a chance to throw in a not-so-subtle dig at an industry that has written her talents off in favor of her looks.

"[April] is an ambitious journalist that's not making it the way that she wants to be because people underestimate her," Fox said. "I couldn't possibly relate to that."

Boom.

TV Shows From Your Childhood That Were Super Overrated

$
0
0
Aah, the shows of our childhood. They made us laugh, they made us cry, they comforted us when times were tough. But to be perfectly honest, some of them just weren't that good.

Here are five shows from our childhoods that we super overrated:

“Hey Arnold!” (1996-2004)

nickelodeon

If even suggesting “Hey Arnold!” could be overrated is enough to make no less than two coworkers confront you at your desk when you’re just trying to drink chocolate milk and live your life, then this has to be done. The madness has to stop.

“Hey Arnold!” was a pretty good cartoon for the most part, but nowadays people worship at the “Arnold” altar so much that even Helga G. Pataki would be like, “Jeez, you gots to chill, brosef!”

Racial stereotypes aside, the main reason “Arnold” is overrated is because it just generally made you uncomfortable. From Grandpa’s often off-color comments to Helga talking about her “girlhood tremble,” the cartoon got to the point where you had to ask older kids what they were talking about, and inevitably you’d hear the reply, “If you don’t know, you’re not old enough.” Well you know what, I’m 26. If I’m still not old enough to know what Arnold’s parents were doing during “the hottest night the jungle ever had,” then I don’t want to know.

Nothing is worth interrupting chocolate milk time. Nothing. -- Bill Bradley

"Doug" (1991-1994)

doug

It’s not that I didn’t like “Doug.” I watched it as much as any other kid in the ‘90s. It had a great theme song, and who didn’t love Porkchop? But looking back on it now, it’s hard to see why everyone seemed (and still seems) so obsessed with the show. Seriously, after two episodes I’m over Doug Funnie and his “poor me” persona. He pines for a girl he’ll never have, has no self-confidence whatsoever, and what prepubescent boy writes in a journal, and then addresses it as “Dear Journal…”? Also, Patti Mayonnaise is kind of the worst. We get it, you’re great at sports and everyone likes you, but that doesn’t mean you get to string this poor kid along for four seasons! -- Jessica Toomer

"Kim Possible" (2002-2007)

kim possible

There’s nothing necessarily bad about “Kim Possible,” other than the fact that it’s incredibly annoying. From an irritating theme song with that terrible ringtone (which is now definitely stuck in your head) to the cheesy nature of the entire series, it’s curious why anyone actually watched this show. People proclaim their childhood love for it, but I guess I wasn’t a part of that crowd. Nothing against Christy Carlson Romano, as she was enjoyable on “Even Stevens.” At the end of the day, it all really comes down to that naked mole rat Rufus. No thanks. -- Erin Whitney

"Rocket Power" (1999-2004)

rocket power

Listening to the obnoxious "Rocket Power" theme song is painful enough, and sadly it's all downhill from there. A half hour of watching weird-looking animations skate, surf and bully each other is a half hour too long. Not to mention there were essentially no female characters save for Reggie, and she was just another one-dimensional character like the rest of them. And don't even get me started with the outdated slang, because it totally "stinks on ice" and is so not "far out," man. Shout outs to Tito, though -- the chill Hawaiian guy who was pretty much the only tolerable element of this show. -- Lauren Zupkus

"The Secret World Of Alex Mack" (1994-1998)
the secret world of alex mack

I was never much of a science kid. So when I first learned that there was a show about a girl who could melt into a puddle because of some top secret chemical with a funny name, I was already skeptical. But I gave it a try because, hey, everyone was doing it. But as time went on, it became increasingly clear to me that Alex and I would never get along. Did I care about that top secret chemical she was drenched in? Not at all. Watching her melt into a puddle episode after episode was, frankly, incredibly boring. -- Leigh Weingus

If there's a show we wish existed in the '80s, it would be "Palisades Park Pet Patrol," of course.

Starring Jon Hamm and Jimmy Fallon, this non-existent show that Fallon shared clips from on Friday night's "Tonight Show," featured the two playing animal patrol officers. The best part though, is that they stuff their faces with food only to spit it all over each other as they argue -- oh, and there's also no animals, minus the intro. (Devoted Fallon fans will remember that he pulled a similar stunt with Alec Baldwin last year on "Late Night.") From whipped cream to fruit punch to Saltines, watch Hamm and Fallon cover each other in food in the show that never happened. In case you want more, there's a Part Two as well (and yogurt is involved).

When the release of the "Fifty Shades Of Grey" movie trailer fell on the same day as National Tequila Day, the witty women of Twitter took this opportunity to make some hilarious 140-character jokes. Gennefer Gross put the two seemingly-unrelated subjects together when she tweeted: "When being lured into an S&M chamber feels wrong, tequila makes it alright. - Fifty Shades of Grey trailer, sponsored by #NationalTequilaDay." Tequila really does make everything better.

Erin Gloria Ryan decided to destroy our Christian Grey fantasies with logic after she tweeted: "The least feasible aspect of Fifty Shades of Grey is that its male main character is a 27-year-old man who has his life figured out." Can't a girl dream?

While some were questioning the realism of the "Fifty Shades" storyline, other tweeters just dropped truth bombs: "Look, guys. The Fifty Shades of Grey trailer is amazing. There are going to be so many babies in December and January," tweeted Roxane Gay.

If You Plan On Wearing Nude, Read This First

Nude is one of the trickiest shades to pull off. And this week, Maggie Gyllenhaal tripped up wearing a flesh-colored jumpsuit thus proving our point.

A basic rule: When it comes to nude, finding the right color is crucial as it can easily become unflattering and wash you out. A good tip is to always go with a nude color that is a few shades lighter or darker than your natural skin tone to ensure that you don't look naked.

Check out Gyllenhaal's nude ensemble fail below along with a few other bad looks from Hollywood.

Maggie Gyllenhaal

maggie

Here, Gyllenhaal picked a nude tone that is blending into her skin and doing nothing for her complexion. Had she picked a slightly darker color it would have really popped. Those black shoes are also too heavy with the jumpsuit.

Rachel McAdams

mcadams

The actress' one-shouldered, printed dress with extra volume at the hip has too many competing elements. McAdams should have scaled back with a sleeker silhouette.

Zoe Kazan

zoe

The top and the bottom of this dress don't look like they belong together. The upper half is a different fabric and has a fashion-forward feel, while the shiny skirt looks like a prom dress gone wrong.

Lily Rabe

lily

The "American Horror Story" star picked a bad color. This top and skirt combo is blending together, the fabric is bizarre and the length is awkward. It should have been slightly longer or shorter for a more flattering effect.

Aubrey Plaza

aubrey

First of all, velvet in the middle of July? That makes zero sense to us. Then, Plaza went and paired it with a white ruffle collar which makes it look like she is starring in a Shakespeare play. The ruffle detail needed to be wore with a more modern dress to bring the outfit into the 21st century.
