'Private' Michael Jackson Footage Triggers Lawsuit

According to The Hollywood Reporter, unseen footage of Michael Jackson has triggered a lawsuit. The company behind "Michael Jackson: The Last Photo Shoot" is suing Jackson's estate for rights to a 2007 video of what would be Jackson's final interview.

The film's director, Craig Williams, says the footage in question was taken by Ebony magazine at the Brooklyn Museum of Art for part of Jackson's first magazine feature in over a decade. The production company claims it legally acquired rights after Jackson's estate passed on purchase rights in 2011, but the estate asserts that Jackson counts as the author and that the shoot was considered "work for hire."

"The makers of the documentary are attempting to exploit footage and photographs of Michael Jackson, which we believe are owned by his Estate," Howard Weitzman, attorney for the Jackson estate, told THR. "The documentary contains footage of Michael during private moments that he never agreed could be publicly and commercially exploited without his consent and/or involvement. Michael never authorized or approved the use of this material in the film.”

This dispute comes on the heels of Jackson's death anniversary (June 25). As the story of his final years unfolded, it became clear that the singer was struggling with lawsuits and debt.

Since his death, Jackson's estate and likeness have similarly been surrounded by legal battles. In June alone there was a $10 million case over the hologram of Jackson seen at the Billboard Music Awards as well as a class action suit against Jackson's record label, challenging the authenticity of his vocals on a recently released album.

A series of celebrity mugshots featured during Jay Z's "On The Run" performance of "Izzo (H.O.V.A.)" included a photo of Justin Bieber. "Even the greatest can fall," Beyoncé told the crowd as the music stopped (according to The Mirror).

Of course, this kind of grand statement did not go unnoticed by the faction of the Internet known as Bieber Twitter, who responded with a mix of outrage and pride, because "Beyoncè basically called Justin the greatest omg."

In other Bieber news: le petit Canadian was recently ditched by his friends, when he fell asleep in the middle of what we can only assume was pre-game featuring virgin cocktails and probably some Hawaiian Punch.

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Rapper Rick Ross has been released after his arrest following a North Carolina concert.

Greensboro Police Department spokeswoman Susan Danielsen says that Ross was taken into custody Friday night after the SuperJam concert. She says a court had issued an order for his arrest because he failed to appear in court on a previous misdemeanor marijuana charge. The rapper, whose real name is William L. Roberts, was taken into custody after his performance. Danielsen says he was released on $1,000 bond.

Messages seeking comment weren't immediately returned by a spokesman for Universal Music Group or executives at a booking agency that works with Ross.

Kelly Osbourne got a new tattoo on the side of her head. She debuted her new ink, which says "Stories...," on Instagram and credited Dr. Woo of Los Angeles' Shamrock Social Club for his work.

Osbourne's got tons of tattoos and has spoken about them often. In 2010 she wrote in Closer she was going to remove many of them -- 15 in total at that point -- and last November she videotaped the removal of a keyboard on her arm.

But yolo took over this time and one side of Osbourne's shaved head now has something to say.

Meshach Taylor, the actor best known for playing Anthony Bouvier on "Designing Women," died on Saturday, June 28 after a battle with cancer. His agent confirmed the news to the Hollywood Reporter. He was 67.

Taylor died in his family's home in Altadena, Calif. and his family posted a note on his Facebook page, saying, "It is with love and gratitude that we sorrowfully announce that our darling, amazingly brilliant and dynamic Meshach, the incredible father, husband, son and friend, has begun his grand transition."

Taylor's Bouvier was one of the most lovable characters on "Designing Women," the '80s sitcom about Atlanta interior designers, and he was nominated for an Emmy for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy in 1989. He followed that role with a part on another CBS comedy, "Dave's World," about the life of a Miami Herald columnist, Dave Barry. Taylor played Barry's high school best friend and a local plastic surgeon.

He is also well-known for playing Hollywood Montrose, a window dresser, in 1987's "Mannequin" and its 1991 sequel. Taylor's most recent role was in two episodes of CBS' "Criminal Minds" this year. His small-screen credits include "Buffalo Bill," "Barney Miller," "Hill Street Blues," "The Golden Girls," "Cagney and Lacey" and "ALF," and he appeared in films such as "Damien: Omen II," "The Howling" and "Tranced."

He is survived by his wife, actress Bianca Ferguson, and his four children.

Pregnancy sure looks good on Kelly Rowland.

Hours before she was due to perform at St. Kitts Music Festival Saturday, the "Kisses Down Low" singer posted two gorgeous photographs on Instagram showing her and her blossoming belly posing in a black bikini top, a fishnet cover-up and denim cut-offs.

Rowland announced her pregnancy on Jun. 10 with a cryptic Instagram photo of baby sneakers. Since then, the 33-year-old Destiny's Child alum has shared photographs of her and her growing belly doing yoga, exercising and just generally being awesome.

Before Shia LaBeouf was escorted out of the Broadway musical "Cabaret" earlier this week, spitting at police and telling them, "I'll fuck you up," the actor tried to start a fight with another random person.

In a video obtained by TMZ, LaBeouf is seen outside of a strip club in New York City, shadowboxing -- or sort of just jumping around or whatever -- as the man who he had an altercation with for unknown reasons stands still, seemingly baffled by what exactly is happening in his life at that moment. However, at the end of the brief clip, LaBeouf opts out of the fight. Take a look.

Miley Cyrus Welcomes New Puppy Emu Into Her Life, Says He's 'Here To Stay'

Miley Cyrus has a new love in her life -- and he's utterly adorable.

"I welcomed Emu Coyne Cyrus into the family a couple days ago," the "Wrecking Ball" singer wrote Saturday in a caption that accompanied this precious Instagram snap. "Been keepin him a secret cause sometimes I'm weird like that."

In April, Cyrus mourned the loss of her beloved dog Floyd, who died while she was on tour. She said at the time she was "broken" following his death. "This is unbearable. What am I gonna do without him?"

The singer said Saturday that it's "taken some time" for her to be ready to welcome a new furry friend into her heart.

"Never will I replace Floyd and that's something I had to take time to understand," she wrote on Instagram. "I prayed to Floyd to just give [Emu] a touch of his awesomeness and he has."

This is the second dog that Cyrus has welcomed into her life since Floyd's passing. The first pooch -- a puppy named Moonie who was gifted to her by her mom shortly after Floyd's death -- was given away by the 21-year-old singer, who said in April that she just didn't know if she was "ready to love again."

Her new puppy Emu, however, is "here to stay," Cyrus promised her fans Saturday.

"I feel like this is a new beginning in so many ways," she said on Instagram.

Cyrus is also the proud owner of a number of other pups, including Bean, a chihuahua mix, and Happy, a Rottweiler-beagle mix.

Erykah Badu Tries To Kiss News Anchor During Live TV Broadcast

Erykah Badu is our new favorite prankster. The singer crashed a live TV news broadcast in a few fantastic ways. News anchor Mario Diaz was trying to report on Shia LaBeouf's arrest for New York's PIX 11, but was interrupted by Badu and her huge white hat. She made some lewd hand motions -- sex jokes! -- walked back and forth and tried to kiss Diaz. Like a true professional, he stiff-armed her and pushed her out of the frame.

Some people on Twitter thought the culprit looked like Badu, but she denied it at first. Luckily for the TV-watching world, the truth came out.

Later, Diaz and PIX 11 acknowledged Badu and all was right in the TV anchor videobomb world. Check out the full video below.

Elton John: Jesus Would Support Same-Sex Marriage

Jesus Christ would not only approve of same-sex marriage, he'd even support gay priests tying the knot, Elton John said in an interview this week.

Chatting with Sky News about gay rights and Christianity, the 67-year-old Grammy winner said he believes that gay clergymen should absolutely be allowed to get married and have sexual relationships.

"These are old and stupid things," John said of the restrictions that prevent gay priests from marrying and having sex. "If Jesus Christ was alive today, I cannot see him, as the Christian person that he was and the great person that he was, saying this could not happen. He was all about love and compassion… and that's what the church should be about."

Watch Elton John's Sky News interview here.

This isn't the first time that John -- who's currently planning his wedding to longtime partner David Furnish -- has talked about Jesus and gay issues in the same breath.

In 2010, the "Candle in the Wind" singer told Parade magazine that he believes Jesus was a "compassionate, super-intelligent gay man who understood human problems."

"On the cross, he forgave the people who crucified him. Jesus wanted us to be loving and forgiving. I don't know what makes people so cruel," he said.

LOS ANGELES, June 29 (Reuters) - R&B star Pharrell, rapper Nicki Minaj and newcomer August Alsina led the winners at the Black Entertainment Television (BET) awards on Sunday, which also honored veteran soul singer Lionel Richie.
Pharrell kicked off the show with "Come Get It Bae" and won two awards, including best male R&B/pop artist. Beyonce was named best female R&B/pop singer, and closed the show with a sultry performance of "Partition" with husband Jay Z. The couple also won best collaboration for "Drunk In Love."
Richie, 65, received the lifetime achievement award for his prolific career as part of Motown group The Commodores and as a solo artist.
"Soul is a feeling, not a color. Talent is a god given gift and not a category, and out of the box is the magical place where true talent goes to thrive and breathe," Richie said as he accepted the award.
John Legend, Ledisi and Yolanda performed Richie's classic love songs "Hello", "Still" and The Commodores' "Brick House" and "Jesus is Love". Richie sang "Easy" and "All Night Long".
The BET awards, held in Los Angeles, celebrates black musicians, actors and athletes. It is hosted by cable TV network Black Entertainment Television, part of Viacom Inc., and the show was preceded by violence at unofficial parties ahead of the show in which one person was killed.
New Orleans singer Alsina was named best new artist and Lil Wayne's rap collective Young Money scored best group.
Drake won best male hip hop artist, but was not available to collect his award. Minaj was named best female hip hop artist and threw a little dig at other rappers by saying: "When you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it."
Comedian Chris Rock hosted the show, throwing jokes and jibes and handing out chicken and waffles to the audience. The almost four-hour ceremony toplined high-profile performances from some of the music world's biggest names.
Usher referenced his 20-year career with a medley of his hits, Minaj performed "Pills N' Potions" on a stage with giant psychedelic mushrooms and R&B star Chris Brown joined Lil Wayne to perform "Loyal".
Australian newcomer Iggy Azalea joined rapper T.I. to perform "No Mediocre" and her hit single "Fancy". The show also served up 1990s nostalgia with R&B groups Troop, Color Me Badd and Silk singing a medley of classic hits.
Oscar-winning historical drama "12 Years A Slave" swept the film categories with Oscar-winning newcomer Lupita Nyong'o named best actress and Chiwetel Ejiofor named best actor. Neither were on hand to accept their awards.
Civil rights activist Myrlie Evers-Williams accepted the humanitarian award commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act signed into law in 1964.

Nick Cannon called Robin Thicke a "baller" and a "shot caller," and then said — via a freestyle rap — what the world knows: Thicke's the one that screwed up.

Cannon joined HuffPost Live to chat with host Marc Lamont Hill about the upcoming season of "Wild 'N Out" on MTV2, but it was an impromptu freestyle at the end of the segment, centered on Thicke's brewing drama with his estranged wife Paula Patton, that stole the show.

"My man Mr. Thicke / shot caller / big baller," Cannon rapped. "But now he got an album out called 'Paula'/ You the one that screwed up/ You the one with blurred lines / Y'all should've seen it coming, I call them blurred signs."

Seth Rogen Calls Hobby Lobby And Supreme Court Justices 'A**holes'

Actor Seth Rogen is not happy at all with the U.S. Supreme Court's decision on Monday that said closely held corporations are not legally bound to provide their employees with contraception coverage.

Rogen was so upset with the ruling that he took his outrage against Hobby Lobby, the plaintiff in the case, and the Supreme Court justices who sided with the company to Twitter on Tuesday:

This is not the first time that Rogen has dipped his toes into political waters.

North Korea's Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un did not look fondly upon Rogen's upcoming movie with James Franco, titled "The Interview," because it involves assassinating the North Korean leader. Kim referred to it as an "act of war" last week and vowed "merciless" retaliation if the film is released.

Rogen didn't really take him seriously:

He also testified in front of the Senate on Alzheimer's disease in February and later chastised some senators for leaving the hearing early.

Yet Another 12 Mind-Blowing Documentaries To Watch On Netflix

Gauging from the reactions to our first two collections of 12 mind-blowing documentaries to watch on Netflix, it's about time for another set. As always, binge-watch accordingly.

"Enron: The Smartest Guys In The Room"
Director Alex Gibney depicts the rise and fall of Enron in a way that frames its leaders as some of the more tangible villains of the documentary genre. Even if you vividly remember the publicity surrounding the 2001 scandal, this retrospective look at the fallout still manages to pace through the story of Enron with a level of engagement rivaled only by fictional thrillers.

"The House I Live In"
"The House I Live In" takes on the tangible effects of drug abuse as just one aspect of a much larger issue. By delving into the workings of America's criminal justice system -- notably the "jailingest" one on the planet -- director Eugene Jarecki investigates the impact of the war on drugs: an effort that has cost more than $1 trillion, led to more than 45 million arrests and left illegal drug use essentially unchanged.

"Whores' Glory"
This exploration of prostitution looks at the act of selling sex across three different countries, languages and religions. Director Michael Glawogger views his subjects through an unflinching yet compassionate lens, for a disturbing look at the crossover between sexuality and politics, and its impact on women from vastly different cultures.

"Wal-Mart: The High Cost Of Low Price"
When "Wal-Mart: The High Cost Of Low Price" came out in 2005, according to the New York Times, Wal-Mart reacted by setting up "a public relations 'war room' to deflect and respond to criticism." Through mistreated former employees and small-business victims, director Robert Greenwald skewers the chain's unsavory practices in a way that would be completely infuriating, if it wasn't also quite sad.

"The Act Of Killing"
This 2014 Oscar nominee tracks two Indonesian death-squad leaders as they reenact their mass killings in whatever genres they wish. As they recreate their share of the atrocities -- totaling approximately 1 million deaths -- the film peels back an unflinching look at the meaning of evil once it is no longer contextualized by war.

"Maxxed Out"
"Maxxed Out" mulls over the American reliance on credit cards and the resulting debt problem. Cut with standup bits from a young Louis C.K., it uses a smattering of personal stories and focuses on predatory lenders to help craft a narrative about the way unsavory business practices seek to profit off of the most vulnerable segment of society.

"The Institute"
The impact of "The Institute" on its viewers is, at least for the duration of the film, that of the Jejune Institute on its inductees. As it follows the story of participants in an two-year alternate reality experiment designed as "a citywide art project and living game," it will leave you questioning what is "real" and whether our experiences matter any less, once we discover that they have been contrived.

"Bronies"
"Bronies" delves into the world of adult (predominantly male) fans of the children's cartoon "My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic." At once a community and a subculture, the show's following trades in a sense of love and acceptance that seem otherwise unavailable to its members. Beneath the cosplay, "Bronies" offers up a story about the way human nature seeks belonging, and the heteronormative assumptions that all too often get in the way of that basic desire.

"Aileen: Life And Death Of A Serial Killer"
Through the story of Aileen Wournos (the woman understood to be "America's first female serial killer"), "Aileen" dissects a triptych of the issues surrounding its primary subject's prosecution. It casts light on the way the stories of salacious criminals are sold to the press, the way both the public and court system digest a female murderer, and the chilling lack of remorse that defines serial killers, gender stereotypes aside.

"Hoop Dreams"
Tracking Chicago's top basketball prospects as they are recruited to attend competitive high schools, "Hoop Dreams" explores the intersection of race, education and class through a world in which success on the court can make or break a family's future.

"For The Bible Tells Me So"
"For The Bible Tells Me So" is a simultaneously academic and emotional look the harrowing clash of Christianity and homosexuality. Through the stories of five families, director Daniel Karslake reveals the deliberate stigmatization of the gay community by religious conservatives and the many ways that scripture has been used as an argument against basic human rights.

"Solitary Confinement"
This National Geographic feature paints a chilling portrait of the deeply tortuous effects of isolation. With a mix of experts and those that have experienced such extreme captivity, it takes on the caveats of a system that reduces violence in the general prison population, but also often leaves its captives too broken to function outside of the cells to which they've been confined.

George Takei Blasts High Court's Birth Control Ruling, Calls For Hobby Lobby Boycott

$
0
0
Actor and human rights activist George Takei condemned the Supreme Court's Hobby Lobby ruling Monday as a "stunning set-back for women's reproductive rights" in a post Tuesday on his personal blog, That Blog Is So Takei.

"Hobby Lobby is not a church. It's a business -- and a big one at that. Businesses must and should be required to comply with neutrally crafted laws of general applicability," Takei wrote. "Your boss should not have a say over your healthcare. Once the law starts permitting exceptions based on 'sincerely held religious beliefs' there's no end to the mischief and discrimination that will ensue."

In a 5-4 decision Monday, the Supreme Court ruled that closely held corporations can opt out of providing contraception coverage if it violates their sincere religious beliefs, a ruling Takei viewed as potentially skewed by the plaintiffs' Christian faith.

"In this case, the owners happen to be deeply Christian; one wonders whether the case would have come out differently if a Muslim-run chain business attempted to impose Sharia law on its employees," Takei said.

The "Star Trek" actor also criticized the craft store chain for spending millions of dollars on employee retirement plans that are invested in a variety of manufacturers that produce the same contraceptive products the company protested in its lawsuit.

"It also buys most of its inventory from China, where forced abortions are common," Takei added. "The hypocrisy is galling."

Takei urged readers to boycott Hobby Lobby and other for-profit businesses that deprive their employees of health coverage based on invasive religious beliefs.

"We are a nation that respects religious beliefs, but also the right not to have those beliefs imposed upon you by others. Our personal beliefs stop at the end of our noses," Takei concluded. "The only way such companies ever learn to treat people with decency and tolerance is to hit them where it counts -- in their pocketbooks."
