Bruce Springsteen's 'Wrecking Ball': Singer's Angry New Record Reviewed

$

-- Bruce Springsteen, "Wrecking Ball" (Columbia)

Nearly three decades ago, Bruce Springsteen wrote with sadness about a man showing his young son a hometown ravaged by outside economic forces, a town the family was about to leave.

He's not sad now. He's angry, mighty angry. On the new song, "Death to My Hometown," he wants to "send the robber barons straight to hell, the greedy thieves who came around and ate the flesh of everything they found, whose crimes have gone unpunished now, who walk the streets as free men now."

With economic injustice, Springsteen's powerful new disc has a subject he can sink his teeth into, and he matches it with music that has some of the same clenched fury.

The working man who "always loved the feel of sweat on my shirt" now wakes up each morning feeling imprisoned in a system stacked against him. In "Jack of All Trades," another versatile worker recites the jobs he can do, ending with a blunt and horrific description of how he'd like to treat those he's worked for.

The anthemic "We Take Care of Our Own" is made more important because it's not true anymore. There have been notable failures to live up to that sentiment and, frankly, not everyone agrees with it.

This is not an E Street Band record. Steve Van Zandt, Nils Lofgren, Roy Bittan and Garry Tallent are not among the 31 credited musicians. Springsteen sounds creatively energized working with new sounds and with some new people, most notably producer Ron Aniello, guitarist Tom Morello and singer Michelle Moore.

Fortunately, Springsteen doesn't leave his listeners in a ditch. A studio recording of "Land of Hope and Dreams," a track released in a live version a decade ago, is a gospel heartwarmer that masterfully calls in the memory of Curtis Mayfield. It packs an emotional wallop, too, with one of the late Clarence Clemons' last sax solos.

The album-closing "We Are Alive" offers similar hope, too, tying together people who took stands for workers', civil and immigration rights and paid with their lives.

The title track is about the tearing down of Giants Stadium, an arena Springsteen made his own over many years, yet it provides a line that best sums up the singer's message on this disc: "Hold tight to your anger," he sings. "And don't fall to your fears."

CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: "You've Got It," the only inward-looking track here, is a sultry love song that builds musically to a terrific release when Matt Chamberlain's drums kick in.

Ricki Lake: Special Deliveries: Celebrity Moms Share Birth Stories

Making our new documentary series More Business of Being Born, director Abby Epstein and I interviewed a group of high-profile women about their birth experiences. The moms that we filmed included Alanis Morissette, Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington Burns, Gisele Bündchen, Laila Ali, Alyson Hannigan, Melissa Joan Hart, Kimberly Williams Paisley and Kellie Martin. Our original plan was to sprinkle their appearances throughout the series, but we ended up with so many amazing birth stories that we decided to compile them into one sweet film called Special Deliveries: Celebrity Mothers Talk Straight on Birth. It's always tricky when you focus on "celebrity moms" because I think pregnant women often prefer to hear the stories of "real people." But the women we interviewed were so unexpectedly brave and honest in sharing their fears and triumphs that we felt their stories would be inspiring to all expectant mothers.

2012-03-05-rickiabbyalanis.jpg

Nobody has ever asked these women about the details of their births because the media seems to focus exclusively on celebrity mothers' post partum exercise routines or nursery décor! Personally, I am not so interested in how fast so-and-so got back into shape after baby -- but I am REALLY interested in hearing about other women's births. I think this shared rite of passage unifies women in a way that no other experience can. My favorite part about Special Deliveries is that every woman's birth was so different. These mothers had home births, hospital births, cesareans, inductions, doulas, hypnobirthing and epidurals. Collectively, their stories speak to the power and transformative aspects of the birth experience. On Monday, March 5th at 6pm PST, I am partnering with Huffington Post and Babycenter to host a free virtual screening of Special Deliveries followed by a live Q&A with me, Abby, and actress Kellie Martin at 7:10pm.

If you would like to screen the film on your own before the Q&A, you can watch it online 24/7. You can ask us questions via twitter to @rickilake with #mbobb as the hash tag. Hope to see you there!

Helena Bonham Carter Is Mean To Warwick On 'Life's Too Short'

On "Life's Too Short" (Sun.. 10:30 p.m. EST on HBO) Warwick Davis kept what he thought was a plum role for himself rather than give it to one of his clients.

The role gave him the opportunity to work with Oscar-winner Helena Bonham Carter.

However, when he got there Davis realized that he was merely a stand-in for an absent child actor, and then things steadily continued to go downhill from there.

Bonham Carter played a brilliantly ghastly version of herself who not only refused to acknowledge Davis as a person, she also decided that she couldn't work with him because of the way he looked.

As she regarded him in his ridiculous "Little Lord Fauntleroy" velvet ensemble, Bonham Carter sighed, "It's really hard to act opposite this, given the way it looks."

Eventually the director acquiesced to her outrageous demands and Davis was replaced by a trash can with a face painted on it.

"Life's Too Short" airs Sundays at 10:30 p.m. EST on HBO.

Estelle: 'It Was Scary To Have People See Me Crying'

For her latest album, All of Me, singer-songwriter Estelle is singing from the heart. Four years in the making, her much-anticipated collection marks the first release since the British songstress' U.S. debut album, Shine.

During a recent interview with The Huffington Post, the Grammy Award-winner opened up about All of Me and what went into it.

How does it feel to finally release All of Me?

I can't really believe that it's happening. I took my time making it, so I'm really happy that it's coming out. While recording I was like, "I don't want to rush anything for the sake of anybody." So I just took my time, because I wanted it to be right.

I noticed that you released your debut album, The 18th Day, overseas in 2004, followed by your U.S. debut, Shine, in 2008. Is there any significance to your releasing an album every four years?

No, not by choice, it just takes me a while. I think when you go on a three-year period, every three years you're a different person, especially in your 20s. So for me it was essentially me living out that process. And it just so happened that I noticed it myself. I was like, "Oh my goodness, every four years." There's nothing scientifically planned behind it, it happens the way it happens. I'm trying to close that gap on the next go-round, so I'm doing some recording now.

How would you view the subject matter on this album, in comparison to your previous effort?

On this one you're going to see all of me. It's about feeling emotion and just who I am as a human being. One of the first things that I said while recording this album was, "I'm going to tap my raw feelings, whether it was being happy, sad, crying or whatever and take it into the studio and figure out how to write and sing these songs with that energy in mind." And it wasn't easy at all. It was scary to have people see me walking around crying. And the songs that came out of it, I fell in love with them.

What inspired you to include the various interludes on the album, which feature people expressing themselves?

I took the titles to some of the songs and had five of my friends sit down and discuss what they felt they meant and how they felt about them. And that was a special thing within itself, to just have that conversation in the middle of the songs. I wanted people to really get into the themes and ideas behind the album to get the message.

Which track would you consider to be the most personal?

The most personal track would have to be "Love The Way We Used To." It's one of the songs that I listen to outside of all the records that I wrote. I recorded it after "Thank You." "Thank You" is a breakup record, so this record I eventually cried all the way through. When I wrote this one, I went and met up with one of my best friends from 10 years ago that I got into a relationship with that wasn't all the way correct. So I made it correct and we're cool now, which is good. And that's who I wrote that song for.

How would you describe the recording process behind "Thank You"?

Akon wrote it and I just did all of the singing and arrangements. That guy is incredible. I went in, sung it and it took me four takes to get it right without crying or breaking down all the way through it. So it was crazy. I didn't know why I was crying at the time, but it worked itself out.

Do you have a follow-up single lined up?

Yes, "Wonderful Life" is lined up, "Do My Thing" is lined up and "International (Serious)" with Trey Songz and Chris Brown is lined up. So we're going in.

Are you working on any other projects or collaborations?

I write a lot of music and do a bunch of hooks every so often. I just did a song with [Young] Jeezy, Curren$y. And I'm just doing a lot of writing with some other R&B artists, so we'll see.

Snooki hasn't confirmed yet that she's pregnant, but the rumors have already elicited a slew of reactions-- and not all of them from well-wishers.

"Not to be rude or anything," said ex-boyfriend Emilio Masella, according to TMZ, "but I hope she has a miscarriage."

TMZ reported that Masella offered an equally grim prediction for the Jersey Shore star's relationship with beau Jionni LaValle.

Snooki will "pull a Kim Kardashian," he said. She "is going to have the baby and break up with him right after."

Masella walked back his comments in an interview with Radar Online. "What I meant is that I hope she's not really pregnant because I want a future with her and don't want her having a child with some other dude."

In case you forgot, Masella was Snooki's boyfriend during the earlier seasons of Jersey Shore. She allegedly dumped him on Facebook.

Fortunately for Snooki, her ex-boyfriend seems to be the only one who isn't expressing happiness over the reported pregnancy.

Co-star Sammi "Sweetheart" Giancola told HuffPost that "if she's pregnant I'm happy for her."

Wish you could impress your friends with a set of Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader salt and pepper shakers? Too bad. That’s just not possible.

The salt and pepper shakers are just some of many merchandise concepts that were rejected by the Star Wars creators, according to a post by Jason Geyer on Action Figure Insider blog. Geyer and his co-workers initially created the product concepts for the launch of "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace," which came out in 1999. Other rejected merch ideas: A R2-D2 wet bar and Yoda bottle cappers for Pepsi products.

Because Geyer and his co-creators didn't work for Lucasfilms, they needed to come up with the product ideas without the storyline for the Phantom Menace, instead only using their knowledge of the previous films, Geyer explains in his post. If the Star Wars people liked the idea, they would let Geyer and his colleagues see some of the movie's storyline and artwork to make it better.

If the numbers are any indicator, the Star Wars merchandise gods know what works and what doesn't. The franchise has raked in $1.6 billion in video games sales and another $9 billion in action figures and other toys, according to Visualizing Economics. In addition, Star Wars has made $20 billion in licensing fees, according to 24/7 Wall Street.

As of 2010, Star Wars was the second-highest grossing film franchise of all time, according to MSNBC, second only to the Harry Potter series.

Check out some of these fun, yet rejected Star Wars merchandise ideas:

WATCH: Arnold Schwarzenegger Says Maria Shriver Is A 'Terrific Mother'

In an interview posted online Monday, Arnold Schwarzenegger dished to "Extra's" Mario Lopez about co-parenting with estranged wife Maria Shriver.

The former California governor told Lopez that he's been "spending a lot of time on [his] personal life, making sure the children grow up well-adjusted and that they get a great education."

"Luckily, Maria has been a terrific mother," Schwarzenegger added. "We work together even though we're going through a divorce... we make sure that the kids grow up to be really good human beings."

Despite their dramatic split, the New York Post alleged last week that Schwarzenegger and Shriver had been attending couples counseling in an attempt to stave off divorce. The same day, TMZ photographed the couple having lunch and shopping for furniture in L.A. -- possibly for Shriver's new $12.2 million dollar Brentwood home, which she reportedly moved into in late February.

Shriver filed for divorce in July 2011, nearly two months after allegations emerged that Schwarzenegger had fathered a child with former household staffer Mildred Baena. The couple were married in April 1986 and have four children together.

The Dangers Of The Kardashian-Endorsed QuickTrim

By Deborah Kotz and Angela Haupt for U.S. News

Kim Kardashian is famous for, well, being famous--and for her killer curves. But she has raised eyebrows with her paid endorsement of the diet regimen QuickTrim. In January 2010, she told Ok! magazine that she used several of its products to quickly shed 15 pounds -- and some of her curviness -- in just a few weeks. Now the reality star and her sisters are in legal trouble, too. The New York-based law firm Bursor & Fisher reportedly filed a $5 million class-action lawsuit against Kim, Khloe, and Kourtney Kardashian, on behalf of four customers who say QuickTrim didn't live up to its weight-loss claims. The plaintiffs allege in their lawsuit, filed Thursday in federal court in New York, that marketing claims about the products were "false, misleading, and unsubstantiated," according to Reuters. They added that there was "no competent and reliable scientific evidence supporting any of these claims."

QuickTrim products--which range from pills to powdered drink mixes--are designed to "detoxify and clean" the body by eliminating extra water weight and bloating, in large part because of the laxatives they include, according to the company. The products are available nationwide at more than 25,000 retail chains, including Wal-Mart, Walgreens, CVS, and GNC. Many of Kim Kardashian's 13.6 million Twitter fans have tweeted that, inspired by her, they're going to give it a try.

[See: Stop Emotional Eating With These 5 Tips]

But there's no scientific evidence to back up QuickTrim's claims, and recent research suggests such cleansing products don't work and might even be harmful. A study published in the Journal of Family Practice in 2011 analyzed 20 case studies reported over the past decade, and found that colon cleanses cause symptoms from mild cramping to kidney failure. These products "tout benefits that don't exist," the study authors said in a media statement.
Illusory benefits are exactly the problem with QuickTrim products, says registered dietitian Keri Gans, author of The Small Change Diet. "They're just another quick fix," she says. "You might lose some weight, but the next step is gaining it all back, because you haven't actually changed your eating behavior."

With the help of Gans and Adriane Fugh-Berman, a physician and associate professor in the complementary and alternative medicine master's degree program at Georgetown University Medical Center, U.S. News deciphered the "Supplement Facts" label on three popular QuickTrim products. (QuickTrim did not respond to repeated requests for comment.)

[See: What Is the 'Best Diet' for You?]

Burn & Cleanse 14 Day Diet System. This purports to burn calories by day and cleanse by night. The morning and afternoon supplements contain a "thermogenic complex," two doses of which provide a total of 400 milligrams of caffeine--which is equivalent to four cups of coffee. The supplements also contain piperine (black pepper) and white willow bark extract, both of which Fugh-Berman says can increase the potency of caffeine, a stimulant that helps boost metabolism. Further down the ingredient list is green tea leaf extract, which may or may not contain caffeine. "It irritates me that they're not saying how much caffeine is in these pills," Fugh-Berman says. "Too much caffeine can make you jittery and increase your blood pressure and pulse. If you pop a couple of these pills with your Starbucks coffee, that's not good; you could get caffeine poisoning, which can cause heart arrhythmias."

The evening supplements contain the "IsoCleanse and Flush Herbal Complex," a combination of stimulant laxatives (senna, cascara, and rhubarb) and bulk laxatives (oat fiber, prunes, dates, and fig extracts) to increase the movement of food and liquid through your intestines. While Fugh-Berman says this might be helpful if you have constipation, it's not good for those with regular bowel habits. "You'll get diarrhea, which could cause dehydration and a loss of vital nutrients, which isn't good," she says. "Stimulant laxatives, of which IsoCleanse is chock-full, can cause your intestines to become dependent on them for stimulation, causing constipation if you stop."

[See: Diet Plans That Work]

Fast Cleanse. This is billed as a "48-hour Super Diet Detox" designed to "help you drop a dress size for a special occasion." Wedding, perhaps? In essence, this is a fiber-rich drink that you ingest four times a day between meals consisting of clear soups, gelatin, fruits, and vegetables. Certainly, you'll drop a few pounds on this plan, which is fine, says Fugh-Berman, as long as you don't mind putting them right back on after taking the dress to the cleaners.
Sugar & Carb Cheater. The company says this is designed for dieters who are concerned their sugar and carbohydrate intake is keeping them heavy. Popping two pills ahead of your largest meal of the day supposedly keeps carbs from turning into fat by blocking the enzyme that causes the conversion. Ingredients include chromium, fenugreek seed, bilberry fruit, and vanadyl sulfate. However, Gans stresses that unless you consume too many calories, carbs break down into glucose, not fat. "Scientifically, it doesn't make sense," she says. "It's offering people false hope."

In a nutshell, QuickTrim elixirs have some pretty powerful stimulants, laxatives, and diuretics. "I don't think anyone should take these products," Fugh-Berman says, when asked if there are any health conditions that should preclude someone from using QuickTrim. The package material advises checking with a doctor before using the products, although it's unclear whether many people do. "Dietary supplements like these aren't regulated by the [Food and Drug Administration], and many of the ingredients haven't been shown to be effective," says registered dietitian Heather Mangieri, a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association. "The good news is that these products are absolutely not necessary for weight loss. My suggestion is to leave them on the shelf."

Sherri Shepherd Wants Her 'DWTS' Partner To Go Shirtless

While most "Dancing With the Stars" contestants are worried about memorizing their steps, "View" co-host just wants one thing for her "Dancing With the Stars" Season 14 debut: For her professional partner Val Chmerkovskiy to go shirtless on the dance floor.

After all, Val's older brother Maksim Chmerkovskiy -- who is paired with "Little House on the Prairie" star Melissa Gilbert -- often goes shirtless in the ballroom. So much so, in fact, judge Len Goodman called him out on his shirtless antics in Season 12, calling it "gimmicky."

Having learned from his older brother's mistakes, Val thinks it's best if he keeps his shirt on for Season 14. It looks like Sherri doesn't quite approve of the younger Chmerkovskiy's modest behavior.

Since Maks has yet to win the Mirror Ball, we have to say that maybe Val has the right idea. Keep your shirt on, and let the dancing speak for itself. That is, until the group numbers. Then, feel free to go shirtless, Val. In fact, can we expect a Chmerkovskiy shirtless showdown this season?

After checking out the hilarious interview above, take a look at the first behind-the-scenes rehearsal photos below. "Dancing With the Stars" Season 14 premieres March 19 at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.
