Dr. Maya Angelou On The Power Of Words (VIDEO)

Dr. Maya Angelou, who passed away on May 28, had an undeniable way with words. The Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and author is the source of countless quotes -- "When people show you who they are, believe them," for example -- and eloquent life lessons, many of which she shared in her conversations with Oprah throughout the years.

In her last appearance on "Oprah's Master Class," Dr. Angelou beautifully articulated her perspective on words and the great power they contain.

"Words are things, I'm convinced," she said. "You must be careful about the words you use or the words you allow to be used in your house."

The idea of words being things, Dr. Angelou says, comes from the Bible. "In the Old Testament, we are told in Genesis that in the beginning was the word. And the word was God, and the word was with God," she explained. "That's in Genesis. Words are things."

This is why Dr. Angelou stressed the importance of being mindful when you speak. "You must be careful. Care about calling people out of their names, using racial pejoratives and sexual pejoratives and all that ignorance," she said. "Don't do that."

Words, she felt, have to power to seep into everything around you. "I think they get on the walls, they get in your wallpaper, they get in your rugs and your upholstery and your clothes," Dr. Angelou said. "And, finally, into you."

Years before that interview, Dr. Angelou was particularly moved by the words in a song by Lee Ann Womack. Oprah remembers Dr. Angelou calling her and saying, "If I had a daughter -- and I feel that you are my daughter -- those are the words I would want to say to my daughter." The next day, Oprah received Womack's CD I Hope You Dance in the mail. Not long after that, Oprah invited Womack to "The Oprah Winfrey Show" to perform the title track.

Watch below as Womack performs "I Hope You Dance" on "The Oprah Show" in 2002.

Actor and comedian Tracy Morgan was in critical condition Saturday after a limo bus he was riding in crashed on the New Jersey Turnpike, according to multiple reports. At least one person was killed, and two other passengers were also in critical condition.

The limo bus, which was carrying Morgan and six others, overturned at around 1 a.m. Saturday morning near Cranbury Township, Sgt. First Class Greg Williams of the New Jersey State Police told The Associated Press. The accident involved six vehicles, including two tractor trailers and an SUV.

One of the tractor trailers crashed into the limo bus, state police told The New York Times. The driver of the truck didn't notice that traffic ahead of him had slowed until it was too late, police told ABC News. The truck hit the limo bus from behind, sending it crashing into other vehicles before tipping over on its side, ABC reported. The Associated Press reports that the truck driver involved in the incident has been charged with causing the crash.

James McNair, one of Morgan's comedy writers who was also riding in the limo bus, was killed. He was 62.

Comedian Ardie Fuqua Jr. and Morgan's assistant, Jeffrey Millea, were both in critical condition, a hospital spokesperson told the AP.

Morgan, 45, is in intensive care at Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center in New Brunswick, NJ. The father of four is known for his roles on "Saturday Night Live" and "30 Rock."

"Tracy remains in critical condition at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital," Morgan's representative, Lewis Kay, said in a statement. "He sustained these injuries in an accident that occurred early this morning as one of several passengers in a chauffeured SUV returning from a tour date in Delaware. His family is now with him and he is receiving excellent care. We don't anticipate much of a change in his condition today but will provide a further update once more information becomes available."

The actor's ex-wife, Sabina Morgan, told the New York Daily News that Morgan was unconscious and has a broken leg. Doctors assured her that he is expected to recover, she told the News.

Morgan gave a standup show in Dover, Delaware on Friday night. Fuqua, who opened for Morgan, posted a photo of the event to Instagram:

More from The Associated Press:

Williams said the tractor-trailer driver apparently failed to notice slow traffic ahead and swerved at the last minute in a vain attempt to avoid a crash. But it smashed into the back of the limo, prompting a chain-reaction crash with a second tractor-trailer, an SUV and two cars.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it was working with state police to look at any issues in the crash related to commercial trucking and limousine safety.

Morgan's limo was owned by Atlantic Transportation Services, which said it had one employee behind the wheel and a second in the front passenger seat.

"Although the investigation is still pending, we concur with the preliminary reports that the accident was caused by another vehicle traveling behind the Atlantic limo bus," the Rehoboth Beach, Delaware-based company said. "We are grateful that our drivers did not sustain life-threatening injuries."

Morgan performed comedy standup Friday night at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino. His scheduled appearance at the Fillmore Charlotte in North Carolina on Saturday night was canceled.

Fuqua had tweeted that he was opening for Morgan on Friday. On his Instagram page, Fuqua included a collage of photos from the Delaware show.

"This is what it looks like from the stage to see a standing ovation from 1500 people," Fuqua wrote at around midnight Friday. "Then we traveled back to NYC in style in a luxury Mercedes Sprinter. Road life is a good life!"

Morgan, a New York City native, joined "SNL" in 1996 and was on the sketch-comedy program for seven years before leaving to star in "The Tracy Morgan Show" in 2003. That show lasted just one season. In 2006, Morgan found a long-running role on NBC's hit show "30 Rock," which was created by "SNL" co-star Tina Fey. He received an Emmy nomination for best supporting actor for "30 Rock" in 2009.

Morgan grew up fatherless, one of five siblings, in a blighted section of Brooklyn, where he helped raise and support the family.

He once called his gift for being funny "a defense mechanism" for his miserable circumstances. As a teen, he started doing comedy on the streets to supplement the family's welfare income.

His tough upbringing informed his humor.

"My aunt was a crackhead," he told his Brooklyn audience in a recent special aired on Comedy Central. "I remember one Christmas she bought me a Game Boy. Then she stole it. Then she helped me look for it."

In recent years, he has struggled with alcoholism and drunken driving arrests. He had a successful kidney transplant in late 2010.

Morgan's films include "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back," ''The Longest Yard," ''First Sunday," ''Rio" and "Why Stop Now."

UPDATE: [3:25 p.m. ET] - The Associate Press reports that the truck driver has been charged with causing the accident. Police identified the truck driver as Kevin Roper, 35, of Jonesboro, Georgia, according to The New York Times. The charges include one count of death by auto and four counts of assault by auto, according to authorities. Roper's bail was set at $50,000, and he is expected to surrender to authorities on Saturday.

These Are The Best Parts Of 'The Fault In Our Stars'

That movie everyone on the Internet is talking about? It's "The Fault In Our Stars," Josh Boone's now-blockbuster adaptation of John Green's best-selling novel about two terminally ill teenagers who fall in love. Starring Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort and the sobs of audiences around the country, "The Fault In Our Stars" is the summer's first true phenomenon. It's also a really good movie! Ahead, the four most effective parts of "The Fault In Our Stars."

It Looks Great

TFIOS

Let's be real: No one is seeing "The Fault In Our Stars" because Boone and cinematographer Ben Richardson (the guy who brought such natural, setting-appropriate beauty to "Beasts of the Southern Wild" and "Drinking Buddies") made their film look good. In fact, if "The Fault In Our Stars" had a visual palette that was comparable to '90s teen dramas on The WB, people would still see it in droves. That Boone and Richardson did make the best visual version of Green's sob story, though, is a real bonus. This movie is pretty, filled with bittersweet images that compliment the themes and dialogue. (Like, look at that gif up there. Stunning! Sad!)

Shailene Woodley Is A Superstar

the fault in our stars

Because all the magazine covers and talk-show interviews weren't enough proof, "The Fault In Our Stars" provides a definitive answer about Shailene Woodley's star power. It is enormous, as it turns out, and could probably travel on through (our little) infinity. Woodley is quite amazing in "The Fault In Our Stars," selling not just Hazel's teen rage and angst but her humor and love. She is exploding with love in "The Fault In Our Stars," and it coats every single scene in the film. Woodley elevates Elgort's performance, too, carrying him to the emotional heights required even as he struggles with the film's more somber moments. (Elgort is great as Gus, as long as Gus is in devil-may-care mode; when he gets sick, though, the seams start to show.) Chicago Sun-Times film critic Richard Roeper wrote that Woodley should get an Oscar nomination for her performance, which is crazy hyperbole, but also maybe kind of sort of true? Speaking of ridiculously early Academy Award discussions ...

Laura Dern's For Your Consideration Campaign Starts Now

the fault in our stars

In a film full of emotional beats seemingly engineered to wring all the tears out of the audiences eyeballs, Laura Dern drew out our biggest wails. She plays Hazel's mother in "The Fault In Our Stars" and brings with her the kind of good, decent character work that actually does get awards attention in most cases. To wit: Jacki Weaver scored an Oscar nomination in the best supporting actress category for "Silver Linings Playbook," and the politics of that film's many nods aside -- The Weinstein Company put a lot of wind behind its sails -- Dern is every bit as good, if not better. Last year, Dern helped push her father, Bruce Dern, to an Oscar nomination. Maybe in 2014 he can return the favor.

The Soundtrack Is Your New Favorite Album

We're obviously in the tank for "The Fault In Our Stars" soundtrack, which should become as seminal for this generation of teenagers as "Say Anything" or "The Breakfast Club" did for kids of the 1980s. Boone and music supervisor Season Kent, working with a bunch of original songs and some expertly placed pre-existing tracks (holler, M83's "Wait"), give "The Fault In Our Stars" a musical identity. It just sounds like teenage life. Again, as with the visuals, it's something that wasn't necessary in the grand scheme of things -- who needs songs when people are crying! -- but it shows just how much everyone involved with the production was committed to making it as good as possible. We're glad they did.

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — Actor and comedian Tracy Morgan was critically injured Saturday after a tractor-trailer rammed into his chauffeured limousine bus, setting off a chain-reaction crash that left one member of his entourage dead and two others seriously hurt, authorities said.

A truck driver from Georgia was charged with death by auto in connection to the crash, prosecutors said. Middlesex County prosecutors said 35-year-old Kevin Roper, of Jonesboro, also faces four counts of assault by auto. His bail was set at $50,000, and he was expected to turn himself in later Saturday. It wasn't immediately clear if he had an attorney. Morgan, the former "Saturday Night Live" and "30 Rock" cast member, was returning from a standup comedy show in Delaware when his Mercedes limo bus carrying seven people overturned on the New Jersey Turnpike near Cranbury Township at about 1 a.m., state police Sgt. 1st Class Greg Williams said.

James McNair, 62, of Peekskill, New York, a passenger in the limo bus, died at the scene, Williams said. Morgan, 45, and Jeffrey Millea, 36, of Shelton, Connecticut, were flown from the accident scene to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital, where they were in critical condition, hospital spokesman Peter Haigney said.

A fourth passenger, comedian Ardie Fuqua Jr., was also in critical condition, while a fifth passenger, comic Harris Stanton, was treated and released, Haigney said. Two others in the limo were unhurt, including the driver.

Morgan remains in the intensive care unit at the hospital.

"His family is now with him and he is receiving excellent care," spokesman Lewis Kay said in a statement. "We don't anticipate much of a change in his condition today but will provide a further update once more information becomes available."

Walmart President Bill Simon issued a statement that said one of the firm's trucks was involved in the accident. While noting that the crash remains under investigation, Simon said "Walmart will take full responsibility" if authorities determine that the company's truck caused the accident.

"We're praying for the family and friends of the passenger who lost his life in the terrible accident" the statement said. "Our hearts go out to everyone involved and we hope those who were injured get the care that they need and make a full recovery."

Morgan has three grown sons by a previous marriage and a daughter, Maven Sonae, born last July to his fiancee, Megan Wollover.

His films include "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back," ''The Longest Yard," ''First Sunday," ''Rio" and "Why Stop Now."

Dearly beloved, we have gathered here today to pay homage to Prince.

We've been enamored with the music icon ever since we watched the film "Purple Rain." Wearing frilly tops, hip-hugging bell-bottoms and loads of black eyeliner, Prince pours as much passion into his style as he does into his records.

With The Purple One still selling out shows and cranking out moody ballads, he will teach a new legion of fans his funky melodies and fashions. So, in honor of Prince's 56th birthday today (June 7), here are 11 reasons why we adore him.

1. He returned to his roots (literally!) and brought back the Afro.

2. He can still rock a blowout better than our mamas. Just sayin'.

3. He poses for "usies" like this, proving he does his own makeup.

4. His head scarf game is proper. Rain? Ain't nobody got time for that!

5. He can give Tyra Banks a run for her money when it comes to smizing.

6. He knows the easiest way to tame baby hairs is to slick it back with some good ol' spit.

Iggy Azalea covered this week's issue of Billboard as its Hot 100 No. 1 artist, and called out Lorde's Nirvana tribute at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.

"Nothing against her, but I think when you're doing a tribute to someone that's dead, generally it should be the person's peer," Azalea told the magazine. "Lorde is not Kurt Cobain's peer. No matter if she killed the performance or not, I just don't think it's appropriate."

During the April 10 performance in Brooklyn, Kim Gordon, Joan Jett, Annie Clark and Lorde each sang a Nirvana song with Pat Smear and original Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic. Lorde finished out the set with "All Apologies."

Earlier this year, Lorde blasted Complex for throwing Azalea "under the bus" with a harsh review after profiling her. At the time, the "Fancy" singer responded with "#GoGirl." Lorde has yet to comment on Azalea's Billboard quotes.

Tom Cruise's Guide On Being Tom Cruise Is A Guide For Every Wannabe Action Hero

$
0
0
"The Edge of Tomorrow" just hit theaters, and now there's one thing on everyone's mind: How does Tom Cruise achieve the ultimate action hero persona, time and time (and time and time) and time again?

Fortunately, there is a very simple formula on how to be like Tom Cruise, as taught by none other than ... Tom Cruise.

Step One: RUN, Fast
In life, there will always be someone chasing you, shooting at you, or exploding something right behind you. If you don't want to end up in several pieces, you need to run exactly like this:

You should have started training yesterday.

Step Two: Perfect Your Street Fighting Moves
For some unknown crazy, insane, weird reason, Tom Cruise has an above average number of enemies. Luckily, he is always prepared to face a foe with pro street fighting moves.

Put up your dukes and learn to throw a punch.

Fall, With Style
The thing about running really, really fast is that you will inevitably (somehow) reach a cliff, the edge of a building or a crack in the Earth. For this reason, you need to learn to fall, gracefully.

Tom Cruise knows this skill is essential for action hero survival, and now you do too.

Drive Like A Baller
Once you have fallen, chances are you have landed perfectly on top of some vehicle. It's time to drive.

Tom Cruise not only can pedal to the metal, but he can look like a baller doing it.

The GAZE
Move over Zoolander. Your Blue Steel is nothing compared to Tom Cruise's signature gaze.

This look is basically a requirement after achieving something generally awesome.

Smile! (and maybe take off your shirt)
After a hard day's work, it's always important to #SmileSexy to let your enemies and fans know that everything's all cool. Tom Cruise is the master of the smirk, half smile and full-on grin. It's a bonus when he does this shirtless, which is very, very often.

After studying each of these steps, you will be well on your way to becoming an action hero master.

Truck Driver Kevin Roper Charged In Crash That Injured Tracy Morgan

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — Actor and comedian Tracy Morgan was critically injured Saturday after a tractor-trailer rammed into his chauffeured limousine bus, setting off a chain-reaction crash that left a fellow comedian dead and two others seriously hurt, authorities said.

A truck driver from Georgia was charged with death by auto in the crash that killed a man described as a mentor to the former "Saturday Night Live" and "30 Rock" cast member as the group traveled home from a standup comedy show in Delaware, officials said. James McNair, 62, of Peekskill, New York, who performed as Jimmy Mack, died after the Mercedes limo bus carrying seven people overturned on the New Jersey Turnpike near Cranbury Township at about 1 a.m., state police Sgt. 1st Class Greg Williams said.

Morgan, 45, and Jeffrey Millea, 36, of Shelton, Connecticut, were flown from the accident scene to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital, where they were in critical condition, hospital spokesman Peter Haigney said.

Morgan remained in the intensive care unit at the hospital Saturday night and spokesman Lewis Kay said that his family was with him and he was "receiving excellent care."

A fourth passenger, comedian Ardie Fuqua Jr., was also in critical condition, while a fifth passenger, comic Harris Stanton, was treated and released, Haigney said. Two others in the limo were unhurt, including the driver.

Middlesex County prosecutors said 35-year-old Kevin Roper, of Jonesboro, Georgia, also faces four counts of assault by auto. His bail was set at $50,000, and he was expected to turn himself in later Saturday. It wasn't immediately clear if he had an attorney.

Williams said the tractor-trailer driver apparently failed to slow for traffic ahead and swerved at the last minute to avoid a crash. But it smashed into the back of the limo, prompting a chain-reaction crash with a second tractor-trailer, an SUV and two cars.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it was working with state police to look at any issues in the crash related to commercial trucking and limousine safety.

Walmart President Bill Simon said in a statement a Walmart truck was involved and that the company "will take full responsibility" if authorities determine that its truck caused the accident.

"We're praying for the family and friends of the passenger who lost his life in the terrible accident" the statement said.

Morgan performed comedy standup Friday night at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino. His scheduled appearance at the Fillmore Charlotte in North Carolina on Saturday was canceled.

"This is what it looks like from the stage to see a standing ovation from 1500 people," Fuqua wrote at around midnight Friday. "Then we traveled back to NYC in style in a luxury Mercedes Sprinter. Road life is a good life!"

McNair was a close friend and mentor to Morgan, Morgan's ex-wife, Sabina Morgan, told the New York Daily News. "He was one of the first comedians that took Tracy under his wing," she said. "They were very close."

Royale Watkins, a Los Angeles-based comedian who said he had performed in New York clubs with Morgan and McNair, described McNair as having a big personality.

"There may be guys like Tracy who get the fame and notoriety, but you have people like Jimmy Mack who have kind of energized and fueled cats like Tracy and kept them going on the road," Watkins said.

Morgan, a New York City native, joined "SNL" in 1996 and left to star in "The Tracy Morgan Show" in 2003. That show lasted just one season. Somebody, anybody, please pass us a cool beverage because we're burning up!

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover girls Chrissy Teigen, Lily Aldridge and Nina Agdal reunited at the 2014 Spike TV Guys’ Choice Awards. The beautiful trio, who starred on the 50th anniversary issue of Sports Illustrated, walked away with the Holy Grail of Hot award.

Even though the models were a bit more covered up than what they sported on their famous magazine cover, they proved that they deserved the honor wearing sexy summer dresses to the awards show (which airs on Spike TV June 11).

Teigen shone in a strapless yellow Three Floor minidress and nude Casadei sandals that complemented her sun-kissed skin. Aldridge kept it simple, yet sultry in a little black dress, tons of gold accessories and bright red lipstick. Meanwhile, Agdal went for a sporty-chic look in a black and white Emilio Pucci dress with a blue accent belt and black heels.

Check out their hot style below and we dare you not to break out into a sweat.
