Chewbacca Will Be In 'Star Wars: Episode VII'

Laugh it up, fuzzball: According to The Hollywood Reporter, actor Peter Mayhew will reprise his role of Chewbacca in "Star Wars: Episode VII." Mayhew played the Wookiee in four "Star Wars" films: "Episode III," "Episode IV," "Episode V" and "Episode VI."

Mayhew, who turns 70 in May, has not been added to the official "Star Wars: Episode VII" cast, which still currently numbers just one: R2D2. It's expected, however, that original stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher will all appear in "Episode VII," along with newcomers such as Adam Driver (as the film's villain) and, perhaps, Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o.

Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn revealed on April 2 that "Star Wars: Episode VII" was already filming, this despite no official casting announcements. "We have a lot of them [in place]," Horn said about the "Star Wars" cast. "We're just not completely done yet."

"Star Wars: Episode VII," which still doesn't even have an official title, is due out in theaters on Dec. 18, 2015. For more on Mayhew, head to THR.

Chris Martin's Rep Slams Rumor Of Affair With 'SNL' Assistant

Chris Martin has publicly dismissed the rumor he cheated on Gwyneth Paltrow with a "Saturday Night Live" assistant.

The New York Post previously claimed Martin had an affair with an "SNL" employee after he performed on the NBC show in 2011. Another source told the publication the woman wasn't an assistant, but someone who was backstage during the late-night gig.

“He had an affair with a woman who was backstage and was part of an entourage," the source said. "Everyone was talking about it because he was openly flirting with her at one of the show after parties.”

The Coldplay singer's rep, Murray Chalmers, has since shut down the rumor, saying in a statement to the Mirror, "This is completely untrue, we totally deny it."

Last week, People magazine claimed Paltrow and Martin, who wed in 2003, had an "open" marriage. "If Chris was playing around, Gwyneth didn't care," a source told People. "She's never been jealous or territorial. Her philosophy is, 'We're both adults. We make our own choices.'"

Previous reports alleged he has had romances with Kate Bosworth and Alexa Chung.

Watch New 'X-Men' Character Quicksilver In A Hardee's Commercial

Evan Peters plays Quicksilver in "X-Men: Days of Future Past," and while there have been glimpses of his character in the film's marketing campaign, the best look yet at the new mutant has arrived via Hardee's. Peters' Quicksilver is front and center in a new commercial for the fast-food chain's X-tra Bacon, Egg & Cheese sandwich. (There's another ad featuring Colossus, played Daniel Cudmore, eating the X-tra Bacon Thickburger.)

"Our visual introduction to Quicksilver in motion comes in the form of 30 seconds of him eating an X-tra Bacon, Egg & Cheese biscuit," wrote HitFix reporter Drew McWeeny in a post about the Quicksilver commercial. "If they were hoping to make him seem interesting or intimidating or cool, this is pretty much the opposite of the way they should have handled things."

Indeed, but such is the game, as actor-writer-director Seth Rogen pointed out in a Twitter conversation with McWeeny after the HitFix story went up:

"X-Men: Days of Future Past" is out in theaters on May 23. For more on the new Hardee's campaign, head to HitFix.

Kim Kardashian Instagrams Photo Of Thailand Snagged From Google Images

In one of the oddest Kardashian news items we've ever come across, it appears that Kim Kardashian Instagrammed a photo she found on Google Images and captioned it, "Thank you for the beautiful memories Thailand."

It's just weird because Kardashian and her family were vacationing in Thailand last week, and combined they took about a million photos of their trip. Why the 33-year-old would choose an image she found on Google over one of her own photos makes little sense. Attempts to demystify the matter has yet to be resolved as request for comment made to Kardashian's rep has not been returned at this time.

While we're not losing any sleep over this, we're just going on record to say we expect more from our reality stars.

This Deleted 'SNL' Short About '90s Nickelodeon Shows Is Bat$#!% Crazy

Hey, remember the '90s? Of course, you do! But, as it turns out, you don't remember all of it because you were probably on speed the whole time... at least if you were a child actor in a Nickelodeon show, you were. This deleted sketch from the Anna Kendrick episode of "Saturday Night Live" proves it.

This one builds slowly but stick with it... it gets totally bonkers in the best way by the end.

Finally Some Good News For Women In Film

0
0
It's no secret that women are underrepresented in film. The statistics are daunting: For every woman working in the industry, there are five men; females directed only 9 percent of the top 500 films from 2007 to 2012. But there's finally a tiny piece of good news for ladies interested in making movies. As part of an initiative by U.K. culture magazine Dazed & Confused, big names in the industry are participating in an effort to encourage the work of female filmmakers.

Dazed & Confused's video arm, Dazed Vision, is requesting that some of the industry's heavy hitters select their favorite fledgling directors to make a narrative short or music video, with £2000-5000 ($3300-$8300) to help each get off the ground. The likes of Helen Mirren, Jane Campion and Sienna Miller have signed on for the project.

"We're not anti-men, but we want to encourage more young women to pick up the camera so we have greater diversity in what we're watching," Jennifer Byrne, the Video Commissioning Editor of Dazed Vision, told The Independent. "Girls lack confidence to pick up a camera because they think they need to be technical but a director is just someone who has a story to tell and can tell it clearly."

Byrne added that she has had enough of the "male, middle-aged, middle-class, white perspective of the world." And she's got a point. In an industry that considers women's films a "niche" market, females writing, directing and producing their own stories is certainly a step in the right direction.

Neil Patrick Harris Says Taking Over For David Letterman Would Be An 'Asinine Amount Of Work'

David Letterman announced his impending retirement from late night TV last week, and after having a brief moment of mourning, the conversation shifted to talk of replacements.

Plenty of names are stirring in the pot of potentials, but the network has yet to officially comment on who might be filling those well-worn shoes. One possibility to be excited about is "How I Met Your Mother" star Neil Patrick Harris.

Between dodging questions about alternate endings to that much-talked about final episode and donning drag on stage for his new Broadway show, Harris admits he doesn't have much time for hosting duties at the moment.

"That hasn't even been a conversation at all," Harris told the New York Observer. "It would be an asinine amount of work."

True. But after a long-running stint on one of the most popular comedies in recent TV history, we think he could handle it. And it looks like CBS chairman Les Moonves does too. The network chief chose Harris to host the Emmy's the last two times the network aired the awards show, and the multi-talented actor more than delivered, earning positive reviews and big ratings gains.

If CBS is looking to keep it in the family, Harris might be the best choice, and he isn't exactly saying no to the offer. "I'm a big fan of CBS and Les," Harris said, "so who knows?”

Jay Z Sparks Controversy With Five Percent Nation Bling

During a recent Knicks game at the Barclays Center, Jay Z sported a Five Percent Nation medallion, sparking outrage and general confusion about whether reverse racism is a thing (spoiler: it definitely isn't). The impractically-sized necklace is a symbol for the group, which was founded in 1963 by Clarence 13 X, when he broke from the Nation Of Islam.

Although there are no direct comments about white people in the tenets of Five Percent Nation, their public perception is certainly affiliated with not really loving white folks or, as Michael Muhammad Knight explained in an essay for Vice, "The first lesson I learned from the Five Percent was simple: F--k white people. Seriously. White people are devils."

As NPR explained in a 2006 article on the group, the founding concept is that "Ten percent of the people of the world know the truth of existence, and those elites opt to keep 85 percent of the world in ignorance and under their controlling thumb." Other essential ideas include the belief that "black people are the original people of the planet Earth" and "the fathers and mothers of civilization."

This is not the first time Jay Z has worn the eight-pointed star with the number seven in the middle. The Christian Post reports that he wore the symbol while promoting "Magna Carta Holy Grail." It has also been noted that the phrase "Peace God" in "Run This Town" is likely a nod to Five Percenters.

According to the Post, when asked whether the symbol had meaning for him, Jay Z said, "A little bit." So, this is obviously a dogmatic commitment deserving of controversy. He is not, however, is not officially affiliated with the group. “Jay Z is not an active member — no one has vouched for him,” Saladin Allah, a representative of the group said to The Post. “It was always understood that you don’t wear the regalia if you don’t totally subscribe to the life.”

Additionally, for people who know anything about basketball: apparently Carmelo Anthony also thinks white folks are devils (or at least has controversial taste in jewelry).

Scarlett Johansson Opens Up About Divorce From Ryan Reynolds

Scarlett Johansson hasn't been too open about her divorce from Ryan Reynolds back in 2011.

But in the new issue of C Magazine, the 29-year-old actress takes stock of what she learned in the time following her split from the actor four years ago.

[My divorce from Ryan was] a very lonely thing. It's like the loneliest thing you'll ever do, in some ways," she told the magazine. “I've had a fair amount of time to process the experience and go forward. I continue to get to know myself better as I get older, and that helps me in my relationships."

Johansson and Reynolds were married from 2008 to 2011. Reynolds, 37, has since married former "Gossip Girl" star Blake Lively, while Johansson is currently engaged and expecting a baby with fiancé Romain Dauriac.

In another new interview with Glamour magazine, Johansson admits she's far more prepared for marriage this time around.

“I feel I know now more of what I need in a relationship, what I want in a relationship," she says in the May issue of the magazine. "And I know I have more tools to communicate, not just with my partner, but with myself. That’s not necessarily any reflection of who I was married to or what was happening in my marriage, but really where I was in my life.”

'Orange Is The New Black' Star Kate Mulgrew Has A Strange New Project In The Works

"Orange Is the New Black" actress Kate Mulgrew is lending her voice to a controversial new project.

Mulgrew, who plays prison inmate Red on the Netflix original drama, is branching out with a new documentary called "The Principle" and the first trailer for the film is all kinds of weird.

As narrator, Mulgrew begins the clip by stating, "Everything we think we know about our universe is wrong,” before going on to promote the idea that the sun revolves around the Earth. (Yes, you read that correctly.)

The film, backed by ultra-conservative and anti-Semitic Robert Sungenis, calls on experts in the scientific community to give their professional opinions as to whether Gallileo was right when he determined that the Earth rotates around the sun.

Confused? So are we. But according to a recent poll, one in four Americans were unaware that the sun was the center of our solar system.

Banking on that baffling statistic, Sungenis goes on to explain that NASA is involved in a major cover-up of geocentric evidence that proves his beliefs. (Keep in mind, this is coming from a man who's questioned if the Holocaust actually happened.)

Whether Mulgrew subscribes to Sungenis' wacky theory isn't clear, but, in all honesty, we expected more from the woman who played Captain Kathryn Janeway on "Star Trek."

Lena Dunham Opens Up About Lesbian Sister While Accepting Point Foundation Award For LGBT Advocacy

Lena Dunham has long been a big supporter of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights, but as it turns out, her passion for the community is rather personal.

When receiving the Point Foundation's Horizon Award for her LGBT advocacy work in New York, the 27-year-old "Girls" star opened up about her lesbian sister, Grace, in her acceptance speech, Vanity Fair is reporting.

"It was actually a huge disappointment for me, when I came of age and realized that I was sexually attracted to men," Dunham quipped. "So when my sister came out, I thought, 'Thank God, someone in this family can truly represent my passions and beliefs.'"

Describing Grace's coming out at age 17 as "a huge turning point" in her own understanding of LGBT rights, Dunham said, "We were raised in an environment—the art world of downtown Manhattan—where no one hid their sexual orientation, and a common question from 4-year-old me was ‘Mom, are those ladies gay together?’"

She noted, "My sister’s process of coming to terms with her sexuality was as angst-free as anything involving sex can really be. She was assured by the adults in her life that she was not only accepted, but adored for who she is."

She suggested that representation of the LGBT community was one of her aims on her hit TV series, adding, "Our goal on 'Girls' is to show you non-stereotypical examples of the range of people who inhabit this amazing city, and we are learning more about what that means every day."

Also honored at the Point Honors gala, held April 7 at the New York Public Library, was Dr. Neal Baer, the Executive Producer and Showrunner for "ER" and "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," who received the Point Leadership Award.

18 Best Coachella Reunions Ever

When it comes to music festivals and reunions, this year's headlines have belonged to Kanye West's return to Bonnaroo and, of course, OutKast's massive summer circuit. The legendary ATLien duo's first performance is just days away, taking the stage at Coachella on Friday, April 11.

In years past, Coachella has been the campground for many reunions of epic proportions -- Iggy and the Stooges performed in 2003 after calling it quits in 1974; Rage Against woke from their seven-year slumber in 2007; The Pixies set aside tensions that tore them apart in 1993, returning to full form in 2004 -- and in honor of the festival's latest revival, here is a playlist of the 18 best Coachella reunions ever, courtesy of our friends at Myspace:
