'Divergent' Opening Weekend Tops Box Office With $56 Million

NEW YORK (AP) — The teen science-fiction franchise "Divergent" debuted with $56 million at the box office, one of the year's biggest openings, but one shy of some expectations.

Lionsgate's adaptation of Veronica Roth's best-selling young-adult novels, starring Shailene Woodley, didn't reach the heights of the studio's other teen franchises. "Twilight" opened with $69.6 million in 2008, and "The Hunger Games" debuted with $152.5 million in 2012. But "Divergent" is still the second largest opening of 2014, following "The Lego Movie." A sequel is already planned.

Disney's Muppets sequel "Muppets Most Wanted" fared poorly, earning $16.5 million over the weekend. In 2011, "The Muppets" opened notably better with $29.2 million.

Last weekend's box-office leader, the animated "Mr. Peabody and Sherman," slid to third place in its third week of release with $11.7 million.

Years before he made a name for himself as an actor, Ben Stiller was just the kid of the highly successful comedic duo "Stiller & Meara." And at 12 years old, father Jerry took his kid to New York to see "The Gin Game" on Broadway. How do we know? Because the great people of Reddit have uncovered this magnificent photo of bob-haired Ben with his father, who somehow looks the exact same almost 40 years later.

Beyonce may be getting her dance on in a Rolls Royce in her ultra catchy "Partition" video, but it's Toyota who's signing her latest check.

A video that claims to be the official Beyonce Toyota commercial 2014 has appeared on YouTube and though it isn't from the singer's account, it seems quite convincing. The description claims the "commercial will be played in over 100 countries."

In its 30 seconds, Bey goes from fetus to full-blown diva, delivering her usual inspiring mantra. "I had a choice: To stand still or move forward. To let things happen or to make things happen," she says as she evolves into a stage commanding force of nature. "Every day I wake up, I make a choice. Not to let the world decide for me. I decide for me. I decide to get going." Cut to two cars riding into the sunset.

Uh, where do we sign?

"The Big Bang Theory" star Kaley Cuoco and The Muppets have advertised Toyota in the past.

Bryan Cranston Defends 'Breaking Bad' Role, Says 'There's Walter White In Every Person'

"Breaking Bad" may have ended six months ago, but Bryan Cranston remains just as passionate about the epic series and his role of Walter White. Talking to The Guardian about his current run on Broadway as former president Lyndon Johnson in "All the Way," the conversation keeps shifting back to Cranston's breakout role. When questions of moral rise, he quickly jumps to White's -- which The Guardian dubs as "possibly the darkest and most morally ambiguous protagonist in television history" -- defense:

"Do anyone's motives have purity? Mother Theresa, maybe. But people like that are saints who walk the earth, and very few," he says. "'Breaking Bad' resonated because there's a Walter White in every person in the world. We're all capable of it. It's never realized in most of us. But given the right circumstances, anyone could be threatened enough, fearful enough, desirous enough."

"Walt was a man who was depressed; his emotions were cocooned. He didn't know how he felt. And then the terminal diagnosis frees him: 'Fuck it! If I do one bold thing in my life, this is it. And it's for my family. And then I die.' Of course, a simple plan goes awry."

Of course, this interview isn't the first time Cranston has defended, or tried to explain, the motives of his villainous character. Echoing a similar sentiment, Cranston tried to shed light on White's inner-workings at a NYC event back in August:

"For me it was, 'By God, if I'm gonna die, I'm gonna have something I can leave to my family.' You want to feel that sense of pride and responsibility. I kept conjuring in my head ... It was never spoken to the writers … But for me, it was the sense of humiliation. He got a glimpse of what his last few weeks might be. That he would shrivel up, and his wife would have to empty his bedpan, that he would empty their savings, leave them penniless and die .. So those were the motivating factors to do something bold and risky for the first time in his life."

Glenn says he's known he was gay since he was a young child, but kept his sexuality a secret — until now. "I had my crushes on guys throughout high school, but it was never an overwhelming thing until my twenties," he admits. "Then I'd be dating girls and in love with my straight friend and it was the worst feeling in the world." (Read the full feature on RollingStone.com tomorrow, March 25th).

Jared Leto Considered Wearing Drag To 2014 Oscars

In a new interview with the U.K.'s Evening Standard, Jared Leto revealed that he considered attending the 2014 Academy Awards dressed in drag as tribute to Rayon, the transgender woman he played in the blockbuster film "Dallas Buyers Club."

Leto subsequently won an Oscar for his portrayal of the character and he told reporters that he knew she would have loved to be in attendance at the Academy Awards that night.

"I thought about dragging up for the Oscars, going as Rayon, because I knew that she would have loved to be there," Leto said. "It’s so much work for girls to get ready. I was brought up by my mum, so I always had an appreciation of women. But now I have more respect for the process. It’s a lot, what women have to do to themselves. But in the end, when you put that final dash of lipstick on and your look all comes together, it really is a glorious reward."

While the Academy honored Leto for his portrayal of Rayon in "Dallas Buyers Club," many members of the transgender community critiqued the choices surrounding both his casting and the recognition he received for the role.

Initially, some transgender activists spoke out and claimed that the role of Rayon should have gone to a transgender woman rather than a white, straight, cisgender man.

Others questioned why the actor did not thank the transgender community in his acceptance speech.

“Leto’s portrayal was of a particular fictional transgender person at a particular time," Mara Keisling, executive director at the National Center for Transgender Equality, previously told The Huffington Post. "But we can’t forget that transgender people like Rayon did exist and do exist. To the film's credit, I think it accurately showed what the life of this brave person must have been and how she was treated. Our job is to make life better for transgender people like Rayon in the real world, and it really helps to have these lives told by Hollywood.”

In early February, Leto also became subject of heckling during a film festival Q&A at the Santa Barbara film festival. The heckler accused Leto of "trans-misogyny" and told the actor that the didn't "deserve an award for portraying a trans-woman, because [he's] a man." Leto responded by questioning the heckler as to whether they would frame their argument the same way if a gay or lesbian were portraying a straight role.

He was also criticized for his Golden Globes award acceptance speech in which some argued that he trivialized transgender experiences by focusing on physical attributes. In addition to talking about his "tiny little Brazilian bubble butt," Leto also discussed the pains of waxing his body and how he was "fortunate that it wasn't a period piece so I didn't have to do a full Brazilian [wax]. Ladies, you know what I'm talking about though… and so do some of you men, I think."

Nick Cannon Wears Whiteface, Sparks Internet Debate

Nick Cannon has been busy promoting his new album, "White People Party Music," which hits stores on April 1. However, he may have taken his album title a bit too seriously…

The rapper shared photos and videos on his Instagram account of himself in whiteface makeup with blond hair, a new wardrobe and a "skater boy" accent. Cannon captioned the first photo with a series of hashtags, joking about stereotypically white interests. "It's official... I'm White!!! #WHITEPEOPLEPARTYMUSIC #Wppm in stores April 1st!!!!!!Dude Go Get It!!!Join The Party!!!! #GoodCredit #DogKissing #BeerPong #FarmersMarkets #FistPumping #CreamCheeseEating #RacialDraft "Bro I got drafted!!" he wrote.

Cannon followed up the photo with a video introducing his Caucasian persona, Connor Smallnut.

As you may have guessed, Cannon's costume has caused quite an uproar from both his fans and critics. Commenters on his posts have accused the "America's Got Talent" host of being "racist," "racialist," "ignorant" and "hypocritical." Others have defended his act as "hilarious" and on point.

While the vocal majority has labeled Cannon's antics as offensive, Cannon has continued to defend his actions on Twitter.

Beyond his own response, Cannon has been actively replying to and retweeting comments of those questioning the ethics of the Connor Smallnut character. Cannon even went on to dare one fan to try on blackface:

Patrice Wymore Flynn Dead: Actress Dies At 87

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Patrice Wymore Flynn, a Hollywood actress and cattle rancher who was the widow of swashbuckling screen legend Errol Flynn, has died at her seaside home in northeastern Jamaica. She was 87.

On Monday, family spokesman Robb Callahan said Wymore Flynn died Saturday at her roughly 2,000-acre (800-hectare) ranch in Jamaica's lush Portland parish after battling pulmonary disease for a year. The Kansas-born actress began her theatrical career in musicals, making her Broadway debut in 1948 in the production "Hold It!" She was soon signed by Warner Bros. as a starlet and headed to Hollywood.

During her early film career, she worked alongside actors such as Doris Day, Kirk Douglas and Randolph Scott. In 1960, she played Frank Sinatra's girlfriend in the original version of "Ocean's 11."

She met her future husband when she was cast as the female lead in the 1950 western "Rocky Mountain." When they began filming near Gallup, New Mexico, the 21-year-old actress knew little of the handsome Flynn, then an established 41-year-old star known for his roles in "Robin Hood" and "Captain Blood." Their 1950 marriage in France was her first and his third.

The couple spent much of their nine-year marriage in Jamaica's Portland parish, which Flynn fell in love with shortly after his damaged schooner sailed into Kingston during a 1946 storm. Legends of the actor's carousing and hard-partying ways can still be heard along the northeastern shore he adopted and where he bought scenic coastal property.

In a 2000 interview with The Associated Press, Wymore Flynn said she had stopped listening to the roguish stories about her husband years ago and described Jamaica as the couple's retreat from the pressures of Hollywood. In Jamaica, "we were very busy doing nothing. We spent most days rafting. That's not to say there wouldn't be a party on the drop of a hat."

In his autobiography "My Wicked, Wicked Ways," Flynn described her as an "attractive, warm and wholesome" woman who "could cook Indian curry" and dance and sing. He also wrote: "Nobody ever tried harder than Pat to make me happy."

After Flynn's death of a heart attack in 1959, the young widow briefly revived her acting career after giving it up for a few years when she and Flynn had a daughter, Arnella. But she returned to Jamaica permanently in 1967 where she devoted herself to building up a wicker furniture business and raising cattle, once even winning the Champion Farmer of Jamaica title.

She said she was looking for a "more enduringly satisfactory way of life" for her and Arnella, who became a model and died in 1998. "I always wanted to own a cattle farm when I was finished with my career. I just had no idea it would be in Jamaica."

For years, the graceful, well-dressed Wymore Flynn was a well-known sight in the capital of Portland parish, where a boat marina is named after her husband.

Wymore Flynn, who never remarried, is survived by grandson Luke Flynn, an actor and model who bears a strong resemblance to his famous grandfather.

2. Be motivated by passion, not fear. "I want to drive forward with what I want to be doing next."

3. Heartbreak doesn't mean failure. "It's a learning process."

4. Good friends are worth the wait. "Once you get to that place where you find people you connect with -- it's so much better."

Jennifer Aniston Says Tabloids Are 'Toxic,' Won't Let Them Steal Her Joy

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Despite spending nearly half her life under the glare of the cameras, Jennifer Aniston admits she's still not used to baggage that comes with it, from paparazzi to the tabloid headlines.

"All that stuff, it's toxic," says the actress. "It never gets un-jarring, but you do have to not let it imprison you, which is possible too." To that end, she has her way of insulating herself — sticking tight to a close group of friends and not believing the hype that envelops her.

"There's times when you see people climbing and getting success and you start to see, oh, they're starting to really change. So I always just make the effort to be as humble and grateful as possible," she said.

She certainly seemed that way when she spoke to The Associated Press last week. Despite the swanky setting — a hotel presidential suite — the actress sat on the floor eating a celery stick dipped in ranch dressing as she talked about her latest project, an online digital short for Aveeno, which she represents.

Looking chic but laid back in a ponytail, dark-rimmed glasses and a slim black blazer, Aniston chatted about challenging herself in her career, a possible sequel to last year's "We're the Millers," her fiance, Justin Theroux, and turning 45.

___

AP: You're a beauty pitchwoman. What's the weirdest beauty regimen you've tried?

Aniston: I don't go out too crazy. You mean like did I ever put leeches on my face? ...The closest I'll ever go is a derma-roller. Google it — it's great. It's like a little wheel that has little pins, like acupuncture needles in a way, and you roll it and it stimulates your collagen and it also allows for your products to seep into your skin.

AP: You're doing a sequel to "Horrible Bosses." Any other characters from your past you'd like to revisit?

Aniston: I think Rose and the Millers would be fun, to kind of see where that's going to go, and I know we're probably going to do another one of those.

AP: You recently celebrated your 45th birthday. Do you pause to reflect on such milestones?

Aniston: I guess it is a milestone. I really try not to focus on it too much, to be honest. Society focuses on it way more than we need to. I think it's always important to reflect anyway, no matter what age you're approaching or what milestone is in front of you. Reflection should be almost a daily thing if possible. Because I was never a 'where do you see yourself in five years' person. I had no idea, and I didn't have a checklist, which really creates a lot less stress in your life.

AP: Though you may not have a checklist, are there other things you want to achieve in Hollywood?

Aniston: I just want to keep trying to surprise myself and I want to keep challenging myself and have the courage to really do that, in spite of possible failure.

AP: Is that harder or easier when you're in the spotlight?

Aniston: You just have to work really hard to tune out the noise and the static. Because it gets louder, and people really have an opinion, and you don't want to shy away from taking chances for fear of what people will say, or living in the wreckage of the future (of) what may be if I do this.

AP: You're producing and starring in the upcoming drama "Cake." How interested are you in more work behind the camera?

Aniston: It's almost more interesting. I think there's something so wonderful about being part of the process from the seed of the idea to seeing it come to life on a screen. And to have a hand in that creatively, not just showing up as an actor for hire.

AP: Will you write and direct?

Aniston: I can't write. I would love to. I don't really have an interest in it, to be honest. I'll leave that to my fiance.

AP: At this point, do you just laugh off all the speculation about your wedding and your future?

Aniston: It's on a level that I don't even understand. It's weird. I think because we are so normal. We're very non-fabulous in any way. They try to create all sorts of narratives to go with a very normal, wonderful life that's just two people loving each other and living life and working and doing the best they can.

AP: Does it detract from that joy at all?

Aniston: Oh, God no. If it did, I would be dead.
