Jared Leto Is Stressed About His Potential Oscar Speech

$

Despite a torrential downpour and flash flood warnings in L.A. on Friday evening, Jared Leto hit the ground running, in fancy black-and-white shiny shoes with a red sole. The Oscar-favorite spoke to The Huffington Post at LA Confidential’s annual Oscar event, which this year honored Leto, who graces the magazine’s Spring Issue with wide-open eyes and his signature silky long locks.

Dressed like the rock star that he is in all black, Leto laughed when he saw the giant blow-up of his magazine cover. “I’ve never seen my head so big. Only on the inside,” he joked.

Leto first heard the announcement of his “Dallas Buyers Club” Best Supporting Actor nomination at 5 in the morning but didn’t share the news right away. “Oh I didn’t call anybody. Didn’t want to wake anyone up,” he said.

He’s might be a man of few words, but his performance as Rayon in “Dallas Buyers Club” is nothing short of brilliant. And playing a transgender woman has certainly brought a spotlight to the community. “It’s been wonderful and supportive and generous -- from the very beginning when I started research and preparation for the role,” Leto told HuffPost.

He described being nominated for the film as “truly mind-blowing” and “a thrill," but clarified that there’s some anxiety involved. “It’s a great time to stress out about what you’re going to say for 45 seconds,” Leto said, musing about his potential acceptance speech. Luckily, Leto will have more than enough support at the awards Sunday -- he's bringing his mother and brother as his dates. “It’s the whole family. And that’s just a dream. I couldn’t think of a better way to do it.” Leto said.

Staring directly into the actor’s electric blue eyes causes one to consider to a certain theory that Leto does not age (Google images of Leto in 1994 and 2014). Unfortunately, HuffPost could not confirm with the 42-year-old the validity of whether or not he is in fact the real life Dorian Gray. “I don’t know. I have no idea,” said Leto. “But I’m sure happy to be alive.”

There might not be an aging painting of Jared Leto locked away in his house, but based on reputable Oscar predictions, there likely will soon be a little gold man in its place.

“Dallas Buyers Club” is nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Actor for Matthew McConaughey and Best Original Screenplay. This is Leto’s first Academy Award nomination.

Happy birthday, Ron Howard! We can't believe the Oscar-winning director we'll always remember as the adorable Opie on "The Andy Griffith Show" is 60!

Since his days as a child actor, Howard's talents have propelled him in many directions. He's best known for his work behind the camera, directing blockbuster films like "A Beautiful Mind" and "Apollo 13." But he's also acted as a series regular on "Happy Days" and written for NBC's "Parenthood," a topic he knows much about.

Howard has four children with his wife, Cheryl, who he's been married to for nearly 40 years. He recently chatted with Huff/Post 50 about his life as an empty nester.

"They [the kids] were raised pretty much by the time we were in our early 50s. The empty nest wound up reminding us of the early part of our lives and we fell into old patterns," Howard said. "We are having a lot of fun. We love car trips and we like to find places where we can go on hikes that aren't grueling but are interesting."

With plenty of time to commit to his work, Howard is showing no signs of slowing down in his seventh decade. He's in talks to direct several films including "The Jungle Book," and is busy doodling away for charity.

Today he'll join the ranks of other new sexagenarians like Oprah Winfrey and John Travolta. Here are six other celebs turning 60 this year:

SEATTLE (AP) — A former financial officer of Pearl Jam's management company has been sentenced to 14 months in prison for embezzling more than $300,000 from the band.

The Seattle Times reports (http://is.gd/vpGb3n ) that Superior Court Judge Roger Rogoff agreed Friday to allow Rickey Goodrich of Novato, Calif., to remain free for two weeks to get his financial affairs in order. Goodrich will return in two weeks for formal sentencing. His lawyer had sought probation.

The 55-year-old man pleaded guilty in December to six counts of first-degree theft. Prosecutors say he used company accounts to pay personal debts and fund lavish family vacations.

Prosecutors say he has already paid back $125,000 and has agreed to pay more in restitution.

Court papers say Goodrich worked as chief financial officer for Curtis, Inc., the management company owned by the band's manager Kelly Curtis. The Times says Goodrich was fired in September 2010.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A California judge ordered Chris Brown to remain in an anger-management rehab program and told the pop singer to return to court in two months.

On Friday, Superior Court Judge James Brandlin scheduled Brown's next hearing for April 23. That would come after what's expected to be a brief assault trial in Washington, D.C., earlier that month. Prosecutors have asked that Brown be sent to jail for violating probation with his October arrest in the district. In that incident, Brown and his bodyguard are accused of punching a man and breaking his nose outside a hotel. Brown is on probation for his 2009 attack on then-girlfriend, Rihanna.

But Brown's attorneys have asked the judge to await the outcome of the Washington, D.C., case before hearing evidence on whether Brown should go to jail.

Even if you've seen all the Oscar-nominated films, you haven't seen them like this.

Mike Breach, 28, a New York barista, specializes in "baristart," a self-coined term for art made in the foam of lattes.

Using only a toothpick, Breach is able to mark detailed faces in the foam, only to have his coffee creations fade away quickly.

Breach started his work to avoid boredom. "I had massive amounts of time at a lonely hotel barista station with not too many orders," Breach told The Huffington Post in an email interview.

"I passed the time challenging myself with increasingly complex designs... People really reacted to it so I kept going and here I am today."

Each portrait takes about five minutes to make and lasts about as long.

Pharrell, U2, Idina Menzel And Karen O Rock Oscar Rehearsals

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Having the nation's No. 1 song does not exempt an artist from Oscar rehearsals.

Pharrell Williams ran through his catchy hit "Happy" more than half a dozen times Friday in preparation for the Oscar telecast. He even shared the spotlight with a spate of stars: Jamie Foxx, Brad Pitt and Kate Hudson showed up to rehearse while he was on stage. All I care about is the fun," Williams said to Hudson, who boogied in the audience as he practiced his dance-heavy number. A choir of high-school students and 20 professional dancers accompany his colorful performance.

Also rehearsing Friday: Broadway star Idina Menzel, who's set to sing "Let It Go" from animated film nominee "Frozen"; U2, which is nominated for its song from the Mandela movie, "Ordinary Love"; and rocker Karen O, who is nominated for "The Moon Song" from best-picture nominee "Her."

Menzel was awed by the technology that allowed the Oscar orchestra, playing off-site at the Capitol Records building, to coordinate with her live at the Dolby Theatre.

"Hi, Bill, can you hear me?" she said into the microphone at conductor William Ross, whom she could see on a monitor from inside the theater. "I'm trying to get that telepathic vibe with you because I'm alone up here and this is my first time (on the Oscars).

"You look very handsome," she added.

Karen O, front woman of the rock band Yeah Yeah Yeah's, took notes from director Spike Jonze as she practiced her performance, "The Moon Song" from his best-picture nominee, "Her."

"Spike just asked me to hold the mic a little bit lower, so I need a little more level," she told a sound engineer. Jonze sat in a front-row seat in the audience.

Accompanied by Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig on acoustic guitar, O sang the song again and again, sitting on a corner of the stage in a long floral dress, leather motorcycle jacket and killer blue boots.

Williams arrived wearing a polka-dot jacket, patterned scarf and his trademark hat.

He ditched the chapeau for rehearsals, emerging onstage in just a T-shirt, jeans and sneakers. He danced through the audience, pausing to shake hands with show producer Craig Zadan, saying, "Thanks for having me."

Foxx arrived in the middle of Williams' rehearsal. He quickly joined the dancers on stage, much to their amusement, pretending to stretch alongside them and offering unneeded dramatic direction.

"Walk, walk, curiosity! And retreat," he said to a chorus of laughter.

U2 also wasn't above rehearsals, running through their nominated song "Ordinary Love" from "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" late into the night.

'Gravity' Oscar Nominations For Alfonso Cuarón Spark Mixed Feelings In Mexico

$
0
0
MEXICO CITY (AP) — The Oscars could be Mexico's big night, with three Mexicans nominated for directing, cinematography and acting.

Except that some in Mexico aren't looking at it that way. Despite feeble cries of "Viva Mexico!" by some politicians and celebrities for the best-director nomination of Alfonso Cuaron, many here see "Gravity" as a non-Mexican movie made by a man swallowed by Hollywood long ago — not as a product of Mexico's own proud but struggling film industry.

"To say that 'Gravity' is a Mexican achievement is like saying that 'Rosemary's Baby' was a Polish one," said Mexican filmmaker Arturo Ripstein, referring to director Roman Polanski's masterpiece.

In a speech at an award ceremony earlier this week, Ripstein instead urged moviegoers to defend Mexican films that portray the country's culture and realities, rather than feeling proud of those who succeed by leaving the country and working in another language.

The same can be said for the two other nominees Sunday. Cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki has been nominated for six Academy Awards, including now for "Gravity," but always for non-Mexican-themed movies. And Lupita Nyong'o, Hollywood's new sensation for her work in "12 Years a Slave,' happened to be born in Mexico City but lived there less than a year and grew up in her native Kenya.

But the Mexican soul-searching centers mainly on Cuaron, who made the lost-in-space odyssey that has been applauded as a sci-fi breakthrough because of its extraordinary special effects. Before that, he had directed many international films, including "The Little Princess," ''Children of Men" and "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban."

"Gravity" itself is an example of how global the film industry has become. Much of the "Hollywood" film was made in London, and it won Cuaron this year's award for best director of a British film.

The last Spanish-language film he directed was "Y Tu Mama, Tambien," in 2001, which launched the Hollywood careers of Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal.

In fact, several Mexican newspapers have reported that Cuaron alienated a professor at the prestigious National Autonomous University of Mexico for making an English-language film in college, and left shortly after without finishing.

"We have to be very proud that this is a man who came out of the Mexican education system with Mexican film professors. He is the son of Mexican cinema. But he has become universal," said Leon Krauze, a cultural commentator and news anchor for the Univision network. If he wins, Cuaron would not only be the first Mexican, but also the first Latin American director to win an Oscar for best director.

Despite repeated attempts by The Associated Press, Cuaron was not available for an interview.

Since his nomination, a photo of his college ID as proof of his roots has circulated in the Mexican media, though a newspaper profile later revealed his early departure from university. School representatives said they could not disclose details of why his studies ended in the 1980s.

After some work in TV and the Mexican 1991 comedy, "Love in the Time of Hysteria," Cuaron moved to Hollywood, where his general film debut was "A Little Princess" in 1995, for which Lubezki was nominated in cinematography. His 2006 "Children of Men," starring Clive Owen and Julianne Moore, was nominated for three Oscars, including writing and film editing for Cuaron and Lubezki for cinematography.

Some praise him for handling themes far from crooked cops, drug lords and migrants.

"He deserves the prize. He has made a very interesting career in Hollywood," said Ernesto Diezmartinez, a movie critic for national newspaper Reforma.

Even Cuaron himself wrote in Reforma that Mexicans should praise countrymen who deal with domestic themes, such as Amat Escalante, whose film "Heli" was submitted — but not nominated — for Best Foreign Film. It is a portrait of a family shaken by drug violence.

But Cuaron doesn't hide his roots. A native of Mexico City, he mocks himself for his thick accent, joking that his "Gravity" star, Sandra Bullock, thought he wanted to give her "herpes" when he said "ear piece."

When he won the Golden Globe for best director and exclaimed, "Ay, guey!" — Mexican slang that loosely translates as: "Oh, boy!" The phrase was the headline in Mexico the next day.

Jamie Dornan Learned How To Walk On The 'Fifty Shades Of Grey' Set ... No, Really

He may be playing one of the sexiest men to ever hit the big screen, but Jamie Dornan admits it wasn't very easy for him to channel his inner Christian Grey -- especially when it came to his, well, strut.

The "Fifty Shades of Grey" star made an appearance on "The Graham Norton Show" on Friday, Feb. 28, and revealed that he learned how to walk properly on set. The Irish actor, 31, has always walked on his tiptoes, which has resulted in many of his "mates" calling him out for his "bouncy" strut.

"I've always had a complex with the way I walk," the former model revealed. "I've not always been told I've got a bad walk, but someone's always commented on my walk. It's always been a bit like, Alright. That's how you walk?'"

Dornan went on to explain that his wife, Amelia Warner, began helping him change his walk, recommending that he lean back as they practiced strolling on the streets through their London neighborhood. But it was his dance instructor on the set of "Fifty Shades" who really got the ball rolling.

While learning a routine for the part where he foxtrots with Anastasia Steele, played by Dakota Johnson, Dornan said his teacher told him to think heel-to-toe.

"No one ever told me that!" he exclaimed. "I was always toe-to-more-toe! Now I just apply that every day, when I'm walking around."

Watch the funny clip above to catch a glimpse of Jamie's "real walk."

Julie Delpy Slams The Academy As 'White Men Over 70 Who Need Money'

$

Complaints about the Oscars' gender disparities are in no short supply, even from the nominees themselves. But "Before Midnight" co-star Julie Delpy, who's a Best Original Screenplay contender for penning the movie's script with Ethan Hawke and director Richard Linklater, thinks the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' rich, white, male-dominated voting body is so far gone that she doesn't even care.

"We have the Golden Globes. If you could see it, you wouldn't believe that there's anything good about it. The same goes for the Oscars," Delpy told So Film, via the Irish Independent. "It's 90 percent white men over 70 who need money because they haven't done anything in a long time. You just need to give them two or three presents and they're in your pocket. It doesn't mean anything to me, so I don't really care if there are women in the selection process."

The actress' candid remarks are a departure from much of what's said about the state of Oscar voting. A recent New York Film Academy infographic reported a 5:1 disparity in men working in film compared to women, while a Lee & Low Books chart spotlighted the paltry 23 percent of the Academy that's female.

Delpy also bemoaned what she sees as the declining state of independent cinema, which she attributes to Hollywood heavyweights like Harvey Weinstein. "I think they love cinema, but they also like to take a movie and give it an added value, then kill everything left behind," she said. "This has a lot to do with the Oscars. In the '90s, there were real independent movies, but they have slowly been crushed by the majors. The minute they take over something, they crush it. ... Every time I've become a part of the Hollywood mainstream, it's been crap! Let's be honest: 90 percent of movies made in Hollywood are crap."

Spirit Award Winners 2014 Include '12 Years A Slave,' Matthew McConaughey

The 2014 Spirit Awards, Film Independent's annual honors for the year in indie film, were handed out in Santa Monica, Calif. on Saturday, with "12 Years a Slave" emerging as the day's big winner. Steve McQueen's drama earned awards for Best Feature, Best Director (McQueen), Best Supporting Female (Lupita Nyong'o), Best Screenplay (John Ridley) and Best Cinematography (Sean Bobbitt).

"12 Years a Slave" received two other Spirit Award nominations: Best Lead Male for Chiwetel Ejiofor and Best Supporting Male for Michael Fassbender. Both of those categories were dominated by "Dallas Buyers Club," as stars Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, respectively, took the lead and supporting trophies.

The other acting winner at the Spirit Awards was Cate Blanchett, who won Best Lead Female for her role in "Blue Jasmine." It's expected that all four Spirit winners will repeat at Sunday's Academy Award ceremony, which would mark the first time in the 29-year history of the independent film awards that its acting honors matched a perfect four for four with the Oscars.

Elsewhere at the Spirit Awards, Ryan Coogler's "Fruitvale Station" won Best First Feature. "Fruitvale Station," which debuted at last year's Sundance Film Festival, is about the death of Oscar Grant, a black man who was shot by law enforcement officials at the Bay Area Rapid Transit station of the film's title on New Year's Day in 2009. During his acceptance speech, Coogler referenced the death of Jonathan Ferrell, who was shot 10 times by a police officer after crashing his car and going to seek help. "I can't help but think if Jonathan Ferrell looked like Matthew McConaughey he would have been alive today," Coogler said (via THR). The director was given a standing ovation after his acceptance speech.

Brunettes Are Having The Best Week Ever On Our Best & Worst Beauty List (PHOTOS)

Blondes may have all the fun, but the celebrities on this week's beauty list prove that brunettes do things better.

Kerry Washington attended the NAACP Image Awards wearing a long, dark side braid. We spotted Cheryl Cole at the Roberto Cavalli fashion show sporting a shiny, slicked-back hairdo. Meanwhile, Kat Dennings caused quite a commotion outside the "Late Show With David Letterman" with retro-inspired waves.

See these beautiful brunettes below (plus more standout hair and makeup).

BEST: Kerry Washington

The "Scandal" star looked radiant on the red carpet with a goddess braid hairstyle, subtle smokey eyes and peachy-coral lipstick.

BEST: Cheryl Cole

We are captivated by Cheryl's contoured makeup, bronze eyeshadow, long lashes and sleek hairdo that shows off her stunning earrings.

BEST: Lupita Nyong'o

Only Lupita can look lovely in bright blue eyeliner and and red lipstick. The vibrant makeup is anchored by her simple haircut, groomed brows and luminous skin.

BEST: Kat Dennings

She may be one of "2 Broke Girls," but Kat is looking very rich with her perfect porcelain complexion, shimmering gray eyeshadow, berry lips and side-swept waves.

BEST: Olivia Munn

We love that Olivia didn't cover up her gorgeous freckles with tons of face makeup. Instead, we get to see this raven-haired beauty's natural glow with just a pop of color on her cheeks, dark lipstick and a few coats of mascara on her top lashes.

WORST: Rumer Willis

rumer willis

If Rumer's orange hair and cobweb-style black dress was part of a Halloween costume, we could give this get-up a pass. But it's not.

WORST: Courtney Love

courtney love

OK, we know that this is Courtney's schtick, but there's absolutely no reason why she couldn't take just two minutes to brush her matted hair and reapply her tea rose lipstick.

WORST: Taryn Manning

taryn manning

Between Taryn's awful blonde hair color, clumpy lashes and unflattering fuchsia lip color, we're just really confused about what she was trying to achieve.

WORST: Elise Neal

elise neal

The 47-year-old actress looks amazing, but this heavy, ill-shaped wig ages her quite a bit. Plus, we can't stop staring at the face powder that just washes out her caramel skin tone.

WORST: Ashley Greene

Ashley Greene is orange. That is all.
